let's hope so.  people who can think of stuff like this to do to children are not right in the head.  they need time away from society.

yeah, i don't get why he had to be the last survivor of a super-race.  that makes his survival from pitch black a bit weaker.  it would be like finding out that the guy in glasses who just saved a bunch of kids was superman.  of course he can do it.

i loved the setting as well, but the whole universe expansion felt like a different movie was made and then they decided to drop riddick into it.

i'd almost enjoy an adaptation of EfBB made into a movie.  or an expansion of the dark athena storyline.

either way, i'll watch this when it comes out.

yay, make it harder.  why not give you just a knife and a whole room full of baddies to get past too.  and keep the same checkpoint save system.

brilliant.  this game screams for mod support to address all the quirks they added to the game.  glad i passed on this one from the get go, but sad that it was such a missed opportunity.

just when you figure that everybody has moved on, they go and introduce a new mode.

4 player co-op onslaught

about a month too late, methinks.

with that, i ask:  was the vip code a hit or failure in your eyes?  it was how we got several 'new' maps and access to some perks earlier.  if you didn't buy it new, it's a pretty hard sell @ 15 bucks, imo.  this new mode (assuming there will be more than 4 maps for it in the end) makes vip a bit more worthy.

i have a level 54 soldier and still use a level 34 battle rifle.  it happens quite a bit and tbh, most of the time i've gotten a drop near my level, it ends up as vendor trash.  i went all the way through the last quarter of the first playthrough, half of the second and a decent chunk of the armory before finding a similar weapon.

for reference, it's a 117 3x fire elemental destroyer with moderate ammo/accuracy but i keep it for one simple reason.  the 'destroyer' implies that when scoped in, it empties the clip in less than 2 seconds.

you will find better smg's.  i barely use them but have a few really nice ones.

typical pre hype thread where we all lose it over not having anything new to discuss until the game hits the shelf.

that said, on with the definitions of blockbusters.

i for one am interested in this with even more than the usual interest due a western game due to the rockstar treatment.  wide open world without an ogres, mutants, robots or cars to be seen.

6985  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nier, action/adventure beat-em-up from Square Enix on: May 06, 2010, 11:08:27 PM
from what i was reading in the cag thread, it was pretty hit or miss whether the store had it priced that way publicly or in the system, had any knowledge of the sale at all, or would even honor it with the printed blog.

fwiw, my store had all of the games in stock and properly priced.  no problems at all.
6986  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nier, action/adventure beat-em-up from Square Enix on: May 06, 2010, 10:48:22 PM
myto, i didn't have to prove i was part of their card to get the price.  of course, it might be hard to find two days after the fact.  the deal went viral on slickdeals and the thread over at cag is over 100 pages long.

if you end up in a store with no idea what the deal is about, you can post in the cag thread and ask shc-gamer to notify the store.  he's sears/kmarts customer liason guy and has been the force behind getting deals like this going in kmart.  he pretty much sat at the computer on tuesday and called/emailed any store that was reported not honoring the deal.

i'll dive into this over the next few days.  the music is definitely worth a listen and i have already had moments where i just left it playing.

there are 4 different endings, but i have no idea how much they differ.

that's a pretty big coup for steam to pull off. Not sure I'm happy about it being only available digitally, but it will do nicely.

interesting promo.  have world of goo and penumbra (not sure if its overture or the other one) and i've played gish at some point.

lugaru looks unusual, but not sure i'd get much out of it.  kind of interesting premise and looks like it has some interesting fight mechanics.

aquaria sounds pretty interesting though.  always like -vania games and never tried an underwater one before.

Beware the bug. If you set the desktop to a solid black background, you get long startup times. If you want a black desktop, make yourself a black .gif, .bmp, or somesuch, and set your background to use that, instead.

the sequel is coming later this year, according to kotaku.  read that for what you will of course.

i enjoyed the first one, even the highly wonky "rc plane mode" which an honest effort to get you airsick.  the game was a good balance of over the top aerial action and plot and had a great selection of aircraft to fly.

glad to see greg bear's name pop in here:

i really enjoyed the two runner's books from william c deitz.  "Runner" and "Iago's run" are set in a post civilization crash where the vast sprawling empire is breaking down and nobody remembers how to fix anything.  the space faring ships are all automated and sentient and once in a while, the ship decides to retire to prevent a catastrophe.  it's post apoc without the galaxy wide destruction.

he also has the drifters run series and the legion of the damned series.  both great

also glad to see scalzi's name.  loved the old man's war books.  great heinlein-esque sci fi/

kim stanley robinson's mars series is good if you have interest in the red planet

ben bova has a series of books related to interesting planets/moons within the solar system and most of them tie in together.
