i picked up on a few of those during the last few days.  also, i would add that it's good to get high in this game.  fly to the top of the nearest mountain if you plan on taking out high value targets or during missions.  once you get the jetpack, most enemies can't reach you and only flyers are a problem.  not much really as once you have the heat seeking option for the rpg, they go down in one hit.  3 or 4 shots with the nano rifle.  during the 'kill the sniper' mission, i was getting annoyed with it until i got up over the buildings.  then a few nicely placed thermobaric rockets brought the building down.  i also used this tactic to bring down the big edf base in the badlands.

you really want to get that demo mission done as soon as possible.  using a mech is awesome outside of the heavy weapons missions.

btw, in the other mission in eos, where you are tasked with climbing the unfinished towers to take out business leaders, there is a great alternative to fighting your way to the top.  beat that one in about a minute flat.

It's also why Bing is now being completely banned by my work's web filter. I doubt it's going to be embraced by corporate America.

oddly enough, it still works here ninja

yeah, it seems my armor choices with her alternate every few levels.  what really makes it weird is finding a great piece of leg armor and then getting a simple band of cloth.  not logical in the least.  her set pieces look damn cool though and some of those wings look like weapons of their own.

The Scrooge(?) achievement lets you sell items, as well as buy things in Free World mode and it won't count against you.

The no death achievement can be "worked around".  Best advice if anyone really REALLY wants it is to take a new toon through Silver Free World.  Level up to around 40-45 but not past 58 (37+ would work too but gets a little hairy at the end), Since bronze cuts off at level 60 you don't want to take the chance of accidentally leveling up too high in the Bronze campaign.  Start a new Bronze campaign and just blow through the main questline.  Just doing the main quests would take around 4-6 hours with all the running around.

IMO the hardest achievement would be finishing the story with a toon who hasn't explored 20% of the map.  Sounds easy as the world is massive, but trying to level up high enough not to get rocked by bosses is a hard grind.

good to know that about the free world exception.  now i can go buy the special mount and do some shopping, although i kind of doubt i'll find anything good without bartering.

i think the 20% achievement could be helped if you can also free-world grind.  or does that stack?  maybe doing a bunch of grinding on bronze then resetting on silver would do it.

the no-death doesn't check how many times you died total?  figured they would check for that.  i also think you may be helped if you play through a toon on silver and dump all of your loot into the chest.  would help out when you start up the same type on bronze as you could take all the risks with the silver and not.

with a level 36 SE, i can attest to the power of her battle stance buff.  makes even crappy level weapons effective and makes up for the speed hit you get from using weapons other than your chosen type.  with that and her short time speed buff, i can take out mob hordes with barely needing a potion.  i do use the exp ones though as it really makes hordes worth fighting, and in my case, worth creating.  i modded it to add reflection too, so for every third hit i take, they get hit, and oftentimes i will kill them without direct damage.  a halberd weapon would also have helped as it has a chance to hit multiple enemies.

if fit wasn't for the early stumbling block deaths, i could easily have taken this character through the campaign and gotten the achievement for it.  still refrain ffrom buying anything though so i can get that one.  unless selling stuff to them counts against you.  that would suck.
6968  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Red Faction: Guerrilla Impressions on: June 09, 2009, 06:57:19 AM
through almost 15 hours and i have yet to find a black hole bomb.  used a few moabs though, and damn aren't they nice.  hard to use effectively though as you rarely have a high value target you can get to before taking too much damage.  knocked out most of one base and then a group of vehicle depots with them.  too bad the dumb things spawn as soon as you find the 3rd beacon and that you can't store them up in the base.  would have been handy to use on the bridge.

i took out the big one in the badlands with a mech i found in a mission.  found two so far, but lost the 2nd one when i retried a side mission.  if you get one, don't retry any of those random calls for help or you won't spawn near it the next time.  stupidly lost it when i went to take out a new rocket tank.  now i need to get my hands on that baby.  looks like a lot of fun.

and btw, if you like the rocket launcher, wait til you get it's big brother.  it levels medium-to-large buildings in two hits.  one if you get a lucky shot.   icon_twisted

still love the regular rpg though, especially with the 3 way shot.  took out the main edf base in badlands with it.

one major note iff you are going for the 104 guerrilla missions achievement.  make sure you do the random "call for help" missions before you clear the sector as they do not respawn ater you take the .  same goes for the raids and house arrest missions.  demo and race missions stay though.

~15 hours in and close to clearing the 2nd to last sector (i hope).  still haven't seen every weapon though.  and i bought every one except the grinder.  arc welder is your friend if you can get up close to a tank though.

6970  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Red Faction: Guerrilla Impressions on: June 06, 2009, 05:07:46 AM
got into dust the other day and found those wind turbines.  easy targets, right?  so i thought anyways, but for whatever reason, i couldn't bring one down with the mining charges.  i did get lucky with the rocket launcher, but then i as i ran from a post guerrilla mission, i got on the path to one with one of those edf armored cars.  hehe,  icon_twisted i rammed one of the legs, thinking i might have to do a 2nd pass.  nope.  the loss of the leg and the damage it did as it fell was enough to bring the whole thing down.  same with the others i found.  huge grin as i got to use their vehicles against them.

on one of the rebel missions, where you have to join up and smash an edf building, i loaded up the friendly in one of those monstrous dump trucks, then drove into the building and completely took it down without losing any rebels in the process.

taking 'vehicular homicide' to the next level:  awesome.

i do need to be better prepared to outrun the high value targets after i destroy them.  twice now i have died after whatever explosive tank buried underneath (seems like it as i haven't been able to use it to knock the building down) goes off before i can get away.  tbh, i wasn't expecting a huge explosion from them and was behind light cover.  strong enough for a bullet, not anywhere close to whatever it was that blew up.  sucks too, as i lose the salvage chance and a bunch of morale.

cool.  the first one was such an over the top action game that i ended up getting it for both platforms (sold the pc version after wards as the controls were better with the 360)

glad that they are working on the shortcomings of the first one.  the combat was a bit off compared to other tps games, and the vehicles were kind of floaty.  but even so, i spent a good chunk of time with it before new-game syndrome kicked in.

gamefly has been nice to me and is sending this my way.  now i'm waiting on the usps to get into this.  perfect amount of free form destruction and so damn satisfying to watch buildings fall apart the way they do here.

i loved watching debris from explosions cause damage to walls in subtle ways, pushing each block out just a bit from the others instead of just being in one of three states like in most destruction games.

i do miss the true geo mod though.  something fun about making your own cave in a cliff side with dynamite to snipe from.

nothing beast mxc for this type o show, imo.  best commentary, best competitors (where else would you get people degrading themselves so much for so little?) and the obstacles are awesome in both difficulty and cringe-inducing potential.

it's similar to how japansese iron chef > american iron chef.  that extra level of quirk we cannot pull off without coming off fake.

Stan Lee's cameos have also gone downhill.  They started out alright in Spiderman, where you barely saw him.  There's a steady decline until you hit rock bottom in Fantastic Four 2 where he essentially walks onscreen and says "I'm Stan Lee!" Of course, the kicker is that in the previous Fantastic Four movie, he'd played the mailman or the doorman or something.  They should at least keep some semblance of continuity in the cameos.

i never saw ff2, but his cameo in spiderman 3 is worthy of hate right alongside that trainwreck off a movie.  he basically walks in just to spout his usual line about responsibilityor some such trite crap and is a proper burial for that ffranchise after' dancing with the emo-man' put it into a coma.

what's odd is that i don't remember his parts in either of the last two, so i think someone finally told him to back of a bit.  good that they did.

nothng M. Nuts She-male-with-a-ding-dong does any more has any promise and even if this somehow got better than review scores in the 20's, i wouldn't watch it even on the free channels.

I can back that up. I have the PAL version from GoGamer and I have no problems with US content or servers.

and with that goes my resolve.  thanks for posting this bit about the import version.  i had reservations about it, enough that i waited past the sale point.

thanks for clearing that up.
6981  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Terminator: Salvation 3 days away! on: May 21, 2009, 02:59:14 AM
yup.  even though every review i've read seems to paint it as "what T4isn't" instead of what it is, i still want to see this in theaters.  what strikes me as odd is back when t2 was released, everyboey i knew thought the future scenes looked cool and wanted to see more of them.  now that we all get that in T4, it seems our hopes for a kick-ass future terminator movie over-shadow what they can do with such a script.  we all know how it ends as they gave that to us back in the first movie, then again with 2 and 3.

my biggest beef fis that they didn't keep marcus' identity a secret.  that would have been a cool subplot to reveal, instead of going in knowing.  and that's kind of the problem with the franchise now.

i hope they have a grander idea for the next two movies and show us something new.

good solid action flick, but it could be more.

i was a huge fan of L1 and picked up both ps1 remakes, including the special pre-order bonus with L1 (punching Galleon) and both strat guides.  not for the how-to as much as the extra stuff they put into them, like the side stories about the re-making.

never did try the portable versions though.

mp should be easier to hop in/out of, the ranged lag is annoying, but i'll get used to it and the starting game doesn't exactly wow you and some parts of the game are not explained well or at all via tutorials/manual.

i need to get back to this after blowing through godfather 2.  it slipped after my rrod a while back and i didn't get back into it when my 360 came back.

i forget how much i have finished, but with my save system (one save before i start the mission, one save mid ways through, and a third after i have finished), i have only had to redo half a mission once due to the bug.  corrupt save issue when i went back.  seems like such a stupid bug too.  if i had played straight through that night instead of quitting, i probably would have been fine.

i figure i'll keep a save before the end game begins and go back to score the rest of the collectibles and just power through the ending missions.

of course, as i say this, fallout 3 still glares at me with it's 'almost-finished the pitt' save and impending expansion plus actually finishing it imperative, sacred 2 looming on the horizon, and now red faction 3 nudging my wallet to action next month.

crikey.

keep with it pete.  it's worth at least 20 hours of your time.  it's taken over 30 of mine.
6996  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Batman : Arkham Asylum on: May 04, 2009, 04:56:44 AM
i played a demo on a ps3 yesterday and this looks pretty damn fun.  it was a demo of the challenge mode against an increasing amount of bad guys, so you really get a feel for the combat and the animation, but little else.

combat was pretty damn fun and even though i didn't know what i was doing when i started, i picked it up pretty quickly.  attack, counter and jumping came into it pretty easy and you flow from one enemy to another pretty smoothly.  whenever you sense a punch coming you way, a blue aura shines over their head and you have a second or so to react, either by moving or countering.  countering looks pretty damn cool and you'll pull off some interesting moves to do so, especially when they are armed.  there's also a super move, but i couldn't pull one off.  not sure if i was doing it wrong or if you need to build up to it.  the mode keeps track of your combo's and gives you points based on how well you keep the combo going.  at the end of each round, you get a slo-motion view of your last attack, and you can get a good view of how brutal the fighting is.  there are also environmental hazards.  i saw electrical arcs in this map.

no idea how the ranged combat could work as i didn't get a second round with it.  overall, it's similar to assassin's creed, but not as lethal and much smoother transitions between enemies.  hard to tell how complex the combat is, but first impression is that it's a bit on the soft side when compared against other brawlers.

oh, and joker had some lines in the demo, but batman was a silent knight.
