i second the consumerist site if you cannot get an exchange at another walmart.

i hate the whole 'register your boxed copy to play' bs so much that i haven't even bought a pc game in 6 months.  this also pissed me off when i tried to update the witcher with the EE stuff and it required a connection to do so.

unfortunately, with a game like this, a bunch of the value of buying it comes from the mp side or i would just say to go off to your nearest crack site and find one, as you just know it's already out there on pirate sites.

As Caine mentioned, the graphics and controls are decent enough.  The repetition killed it for me, though.  I was bored way before I got to the end of the demo.  And for, what $20?  $30?  It just didn't seem worth it to me.

Yup, as I posted in the PC gaming thread on this the cost is far too much for me. Just no way a 3-4 hour arcade game is worth that amount of points. I might, and I emphasize the might, have bitten if it was only 800 pts.

3-4 hrs is bad,i had my suspicions when i saw one of the Achievements was to finish the game under 80 minutes

geez, that's less time than the movie.

yeah, i think i'm out for a while.

i have a 60gb, from the last batch of new units before they fazed them out, so i'm crossing my fingers.

my launch day ps2 still works, as does my ps1, so i hope my luck holds to make up for 2 rrod'ed 360s in less than two years.

6964  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Watchmen on XBLA:No comments? on: March 05, 2009, 08:31:41 PM
i tried the demo last night after it's rather large download ~1.2gbs and got through it.  it definitely has an old school brawler feel to it and with R, you get some rather basic fighting options to start (weak, strong, evade).  you unlock more moves by finding scattered objects, which could be a pita if they hide them in game somewhere.  the demo gives you a longer combo, a counter attack and a knockout move which uses your rage meter.  that's filled by getting into large fights and pulling off combos, from what i could tell, and drained during lulls.  R can pick up and use weapons (billy clubs in the demo) and use them until the broke (not overly long to be overpowered and not too short, considering how often i found them).

i didn't play through as nite owl, but i plan to tonight.

technically speaking, it's a good looking game with good controls, with at least two play-throughs warranted.

i haven't decided whether to pull the trigger on it yet, but if reviews are favorable, i might grab it after i see the movie for more watchmen fun.

new zealand looks like a damn cool place to live, and for that matter, so does sydney.
england could be pretty cool, as would tokyo or hong kong, but i'd be gaijin all the way, which would take some getting used to.

vancouver, further up north is nice, but damn, you are so far away.  victoria bc is also nice, and has a cleaner seattle-esque atmosphere to boot.

6970  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]GTAIV:The Lost and Damned on: March 01, 2009, 06:25:03 PM
odd about the gang wars.  i have been sticking pretty exclusively to the carbine and taking my time to line up head shots when possible.  so far, i have only died once to a gang war as i was trying to rack up a quick kill in one of those 'destroy the vehicle' variants.

i'm sitting on a ton of money and only need to call terry for armor now and again.

i do agree with you about the races being somewhat pointless outside of the achievement.  once i had done 10 of the wars and got a weapon unlock, i expected the same thing from the races.  at least they give you a new custom racer after that mission you hinted on.(awesome btw, and the mid-mission restart definitely helps)

could be worse and be like the seagull hunts.  i have found two so far and faik, you don't get squat for hunting them all down.

6973  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]GTAIV:The Lost and Damned on: March 01, 2009, 05:14:18 AM
while it's not required to do the gang war missions or the race missions, they are the method by which you get the  achievements for knocking 69 people off their bikes and for getting terry and clay to 100% toughness.  you can get them up to 100% through backup on missions, but the gang war gets them up faster.  one thing that i learned from the hint video is that if you stick close to them during the ride to the gang's location, you will bring up their toughness.  i got the achievement on the ride over myself.  also, you get weapon unlocks for finishing 10, 20, and probably 25 gang wars.

afaik, the races are the only time you can knock people off their bikes, so if you are close, i hope you can redo some to make it 69

i actually began to feel sorry for boomer.  damn, sucker punch to the gut.  even galen was floored when he realized what he had done.

damn, that 8 is a cold manipulative bitch.  she even faked out the queen Bitch herself, ellen.

i thought it started slow, but ramped up to a pretty good last half.  the whole deal with the piano player was so heavy handed that i wasn't in the least surprised that it was all in her head.  i think the earlier interactions when she's talking to him in front of the barkeeper should have been a warning sign to him to stop serving though.  we can't have a clean ship if you got pilots FUI.

next week's blurb expands on what i think will be the end point to the show.  i think it could turn out ok, even if they don't leave themselves a way out of it.

The touch screen recognition is HIDEOUSLY bad.
I've quit playing plenty of other games within minutes for this reason.
It's inexcusable and I'm really, really pissed (in case you couldn't tell)  mad

Makes you wonder how they ruined this so pad when Puzzle Quest on the DS was pretty good.

it's a damn stupid thing that something that worked so well before doesn't work here.  hell, of all the versions of pq that i played, the ds version was my favorite due to how well the touch control worked.

about 'they have a plan', i figure that by now, the humans have so completely screwed up the plan that it doesn't matter any more and the writers were just too lazy to remove it from the intro.  hell, did they plan on letting the humans cause such fragmentation between their own members to cause whole lines of cylons to rebel?

btw, i have been listening to the season 1 intro music (the military style marching drum beat) and it's kind of sad that so much of the early kick ass episodes have given way to inter couple drama.  i think i'll restart watching from the mini-series after the last episode to compare the writing quality.

this sounds like a good enough reason to go with the pc over even the xbla version.  hmmm, i will have to think a bit about which one to get.
6981  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PQ Galactrix impressions thread on: February 27, 2009, 05:20:34 AM
so far, my impressions is that this one is just as hard to find as it's predecessor.  i checked three different stores today and nobody even knew what i was talking about in the big stores and i would have had to made a reservation at gamestop to even see the box.  crud.

so far, reviews are not as high as with pq1, but even though they seem to have made the game less accessible in favor of adding new modes, i am still excited for this.

eurogamer gave the xbla version a 7/10, citing it as a dilution of pq, but still good.  a few nagging issues, but nothing i will be too worried about.

now i just need to find a copy of the blasted thing.
6982  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]GTAIV:The Lost and Damned on: February 27, 2009, 05:16:11 AM
when i won that mission, it was because i had flipped the bus on it's side up near the mansions.  all of the fuzz jumped out of their cars while i tried madly to get the bus righted.  while it shouldn't be possible in any reality, i did get the bus on it's wheels and because the cops were slow to get back in the chase, i was able to put enough space between us in the downtown commercial section.  when they finally got going again, i had been able to get out of the search area and avoid their backup.  damn lucky break and it made up for the previous attempt where the damn bus exploded (it wasn't even on fire, so i was a bit pissed) trying to get on the freeway onramp to get my speed up and attempt to shoot out the drivers following me.

one thing which i realized after i finished the mission where you meet niko, is that i could have called in backup instead of trying to be a one man army.  i need to remember that i'm not alone in TLaD

6984  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3 impressions thread on: February 26, 2009, 10:36:06 PM
i don't think there's a recommended level as much as there being a pretty long slog through dc, both above and below ground, with the usual collection of super mutants and ghouls.  if you can handle a mutant or two and not need to stop, you should be ok. at level 8, you should be pretty capable of reaching there; i made it to rivet city before i was that level, even though i snuck around the mutants and only engaged critters and bandits.

once you make contact with the first soldier, you can let him and his squad take most of the mutants and pick up the loot.  the actual dlc content shouldn't be too much at that level as they do dole out gear and supplies pretty regularly.
6985  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]GTAIV:The Lost and Damned on: February 26, 2009, 10:30:20 PM
damn, some of the missions get tough pretty quick.  so far, i have had to redo 3 of them more than once.  the school bus was a pita during the escape as you get so much heat on you from the start.  i got lucky though and lost a bunch of them when the got out to take pot shots at me.

i'm still getting back into the groove though, and i am pretty rusty with gta's gameplay.

i just advanced the story past stubby the show-off's missions and have a whole chunk of extra things to do.  like the gangwars better as some of them have been pretty big so far.  i really loved it when one war was to take down a truck driver.  pretty cool.

6988  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3 impressions thread on: February 26, 2009, 10:08:58 PM
tbh, you don't really need to get the content unless your run out of game (not likely any time soon) or you want to get an early bump in equipment.  once you finish the content, you do get some pretty cool gear and when i restart, i'll likely do it as soon as i can survive.  the biggest hurdle to actually playing through at low levels is that your starting gear and stats make you highly vulnerable to the enemies you face getting to the start off point.  it's not impossible, but it could be a bit tough.

i wasn't surprised to see ellen go all bitchy again.  hell, if my friends who also watch had been over on friday, we would have made a drinking game out of it.

it is a bit odd that boomer knew exactly where to go.  plot hole.
it's also screwed up that tigh didn't talk to six as soon as ellen arrived.  plot hole to move liam's death.
the whole time he was with ellen, i kept thinking, 'man, he's a dumb ass".  sleeping with her, then not telling her about six and the baby, then letting her take control of the cylons like an avenging angel.  damnit, tigh, show some strength.

liam's death was pretty much the focal point for this week's plot.  do what you can do drive six to the edge.

really bummed that there are only 4 episodes left.  also bummed that they don't have enough time for more action until the big finale.  that means likely 1 more meandering episode like this and last week, and a buildup through the next two until the end.

was i the only one thinking that tigh would be pushed to poison ellen twice?

I've had live for a LOOOOOOOOONG time now - i have NO CLUE what the email address is thats tied to my account.  i first got live for the original xbox and then continued on that account for my 360

i THINK at some point i may have set up an msn or some such thing... but is the deleting of microsoft email accounts a new thing?  did they just do a mass delete and thats why the problem is creeping up now?

in other words... if i havent been hit by this yet... will it come back to get me? (keep in mind that most likely, whatever email account i set up for my xbox - was probably 6 or 7 years ago...???)

i first created a hotmail account before ms bought it and used it for college.  a few years later, i fell out of using it as i had a new one with a family provider.  my hotmail account was deactivated and deleted then.  at least 5 years ago they were doing that.  not surprised they still are actually, but it's one reason i never went back.

playon is $40 for non-beta users, and i don't think the trial counts for a $10 discount.  one time fee, and as for now, the only one to work with hulu.  not sure if it works for abc though, as that still requires a pc browser and wouldn't work through the ps3. (it installs something beyond a codec).

scifi.com works through the browser though, and not too bad on the ps3.  you can even zoom the screen in enough that you barely notice it's a 'cast.  because the ps3 goes into a standby mode after 10 minutes, you need to move the sticks every now and again as the darker standby screen is too hard to see.  of course, no fancy stereo sound though.

i have tried without much success to get a lightweight linux box (actually, a linksys nslu-2, using unSlung) to house all of my media files and stream to either machine.  some fiddling with linux should sort that out though.

xbmc is also an option for full pc's and modded xbox 1.  not tried it, but it's always mentioned.

tversity works pretty well and i got it go with no problem on the ps3 (can't check the 360 as it's still in the shop).  simple install, simple to set up and it was found right off the bat.  i even use the linksys box for media sharing too.
