Well...I cleared out a couple and grabbed this from Steam a couple days ago and am enjoying it so far.

damn, you just made this sound like the coolest damn military game and made it so i would love to pick this up.  unfortunately, on a 3 year old pc (a beast at the time) i wonder how well i can run this, especially when stalker cs ran like a dog at highest res.

open world military game.  this is what we always wanted when ofp was announced.
6922  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Awesome App Megathread on: July 02, 2009, 07:34:33 PM
launchy is great and i wouldn't set up a system any other way now

Virtual Desktop - 4 desktops you can switch between and group your open programs by task.  can be buggy, but it works very well most of the time.

notepad++ - the best notepad replacement i have ever used.  plugins for multiple uses, programming language coding, file tabs and sessions, and it works portable.

Console.  command prompt replacement and it looks pretty slick with a transparent interface.  command prompt portable is pretty slick too.

System administration
all of the pstools apps are great, and fepstools is a slick gui interface for all of them.
powergui - powershell interface, helps ID and script creation
wmic - windows management interface command line.  super fast method to pull data and perform common maintenance tasks on groups of servers.
vnc.  many flavors and some great choices for small administration tasks and help desk stuff
logmein.com - need to help someone far from home who can't figure out basic stuff?  get them hooked up with this and you can remote manage their system without overwhelming them with tech speak.

as for my major interest, portable applications, there are a number of them.  mostly, i go by what's listed on portableapps.com, both main page and forum, and portablefreeware.com.

liberkey is a great super suite of portable applications too and make a good site to start.

these are just what i know off the top of my head.  there's a lot more.

6924  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: game of the (1/2) year on: July 02, 2009, 04:17:53 PM
top honors so far:

RFG, for all the reasons that have been mentioned.  just a damn fun game with a destruction engine that sets the standard. if they made an arcade game using it ala boom blox, i would buy it in a heartbeat.

infamous, while taking a back seat to prototype (which i haven't yet played) does a lot right despite some issues.  i for one had a blast in it and even though i don't feel the need to go through again for the good side, i had a lot of fun, throughout the game.

ghostbusters, for making the dream of millions of fans come true.  great effects, story, humor, cast support, and solid gameplay, with mp to boot.  this is how you make a game out of a movie.  if other movie games were this good, we would not view them with disdain.  we would love them.

this time it's a 10 year old A310 on approach into the Indian ocean.

god, can we all please have a month off from disaster and death, june's been a bad month

two aircraft and 4 well known people.  this has to be some kind of record for a string of unrelated tragedies.

153 people lost here, 228 lost at the beginning of the month.

looks like it may be heart disease instead.

Quote
Mays suffered from hypertensive heart disease... No evidence of exterior or interior head trauma was found during Mays' autopsy, Adams said

well, if that's the cause, then that clears the airline of any negligent wrongdoing.  of course, i'm not entirely sure yet.  hypertension + an unseen trauma could very well add up to a sudden death where it would have just left a healthier person with a headache.

+1 to WBS and Grue about the difficulty, particularly the part about playing on experienced.  up until then, i was having a great time and hadn't had any major problems, even when you aren't with the whole group.  (i think the first section with ecto-1 was troublesome, but that was before i used it to capture).  the damn cherubs in the first section are just huge pita's and ray was no help at all. most of the time, i had to revive him 3, 4 times, and worst of all, he's too brain dead on when to revive you.  he ran into to save me several times as they were pelting me with the fireballs, knocking us both out.  nice save man.

the only trick i had was using webbing the gate first and then dodging everything (but not with B, as that breaks the web) and hoping to get a good shot at the little bastards.  i think i tried it about 10 times before quitting and then aced it when i went back last night.  the section later on was also a pita even with all 5 of us as it just took to long to get any of the floaters captured, and you then had those ghosts plus the undead slashers, the tombstone creepers, and the damn cherubs flying around.  really damn aggravating as i was constantly running around playing medic.

then the last boss?  first try, no problems getting the trick or staying alive.

i do like the ending and that they tell you how many ghosts/artifacts you found in each level.

btw, kathode, you should seriously consider licensing this geomod engine for the next fallout game.  mini nukes would be so damn cool to use if they could take out structures like this.
6935  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Red Faction: Guerrilla Impressions on: June 28, 2009, 05:55:53 PM
after you do the demo mission, you will start seeing mechs show up.  one of the light Aliens-esque loader mechs shows up near an edf roadblock and a race start point (i think).  i grabbed it during a mission and used it to finish that up and then knock down the bridge.  i smashed the sections nearest the ends so edf couldn't follow me out and then proceeded to plow up the roadway and knock down supports.  by the time i was done, it looked like a massive kids construction kit after a temper tantrum and fell down in sections.

you could also use mines and the edf against itself and remote charges to make a massive chain reaction.  i did that later on just for fun when the bridge was rebuilt.

i'm getting an urge to boot this up now.

6938  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Windows 7 Home Premium (upgrade) $49.99 pre-order on: June 26, 2009, 06:47:14 PM
yup, and even then, 8 gb is much more than the average home user would need, even a few years out.  hell, i started with 2 gb on the current pc 3 years ago and going up from there isn't going to make a huge difference unless i want to run virtual machines.

i think going with pro would make a difference if you consider the xp mode useful.  a lot of that may be if you're a business.

i'll probably just stick with premium myself and if i end up down the road needing a beefier machine, getting pro for that one by itself.

btw, amazon has really cheap release day shipping.  6 bucks is much cheaper than anybody else's 2 day shipping.  impressed  thumbsup

even better than the download option, tbh.  maybe being located in the same state helped.

I don't see any mention of 32-bit or 64-bit on these retail sites.  Am I to assume that both versions come in every box?

I thought Microsoft is just going 64-bit on all W7 versions now or something. Odds are I could be wrong though.

And the 'both versions in the box' didn't work for Vista. The key was for all versions, but normally the 32-bit version was the one that was included (I got Ultimate). It was sad - I had to either pay Microsoft for them to send me a 64-bit disc of Vista, or I had to pirate the bloody thing to use the key I had.

This could suck.  I'm hoping that they remember to put the 64-bit versions on disc.  Maybe it'd be better to just order the download version from MS directly rather than the boxed version.

probably a safe bet considering that online is where you can buy it, but you have to wait for shipping anyways.  at least with an iso you can dl it as fast as your connection will be (assuming the tubes don't get so plugged with W7 that you end up at dial up speeds)

funny that i still have an attachment to the physical box and disc when i've already been using downloaded iso's from technet.

any reason you can't buy a physical copy of x64 and upgrade to it from x86?  'the key...' sounds like 'only' the way it's written on the link.  i would like to avoid the whole launch day download wait if at all possible.

You can't do an in-place cross-architecture upgrade from x86 to x64, unfortunately.  You'll need to do a clean install where you migrate your data using the Win 7 version of USMT.

no, no.  i get that you can't cross the architecture streams.  logically, it breaks more than it could fix.

what i wonder is why he wrote 'the key to this ...' regarding the x86 -> x64 upgrade rather than just saying 'yes'.  the way he describes it makes it seem like you are somehow locked to a platform if you buy the upgrade anywhere else.  like amazon checking version key platform for eligibility requirements.

in any case, i'll probably be dual booting the main pc at home just so i have a working os to fall back on should i hit an unknown, at least for the initial run.
6950  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 1TB HDD for the 360? on: June 25, 2009, 06:51:32 PM
it would make sense either way, but having it up there makes it easier to justify the 'slightly' more expensive 1tb drive.  there's a marketing scheme in that method.

the upgrade deal is nice, but the install method from clean os is backwards.  i guess they figured out why the upgrade version of vista was more popular than the full.

we'll never have a video game written/directed by philip k. dick (r.i.p.), but we do have fsr (as it refers to itself). i'm not saying this's a good thing - while i'd strongly encourage anyone who hasn't read 'the 3 stigmata of palmer eldritch' to drop everything & do so immediately, he also had a strong tendency to wander off to places that, while obviously interesting to him, weren't really all that interesting (or comprehensible) to anyone else, & fsr tends to cross that line pretty frequently...

and no, not interested in trying out a game which takes your mind on such a trip.  it sounds intriguingly horrible.
