You could repair Blackhawks in-flight in BF2. It was glorious, as long as it wasn't happening to you.

Quote from: Boudreaux on March 05, 2010, 04:26:54 PM

So how does the leveling/XP progress compare to MW2?  I ask because after several matches over the last couple of days, I'm barely halfway to the first rank (Private Lvl 1).  I've unlocked the ammo crates for the Assault class and the repair tool for the engineer, but that's it.  I'm barely getting 500-600XP per match.

I'm not necessarily saying that the initial rapid advancement of MW2 is better, but I have to wonder if there are tasks or objectives that I'm missing somehow that provide more XP.  Or is ranking up really this slow?
I think I ranked up at least 2-3 times Tuesday night. (And don't forget you start out at rank zero, I believe. Are you spotting enemies for your team?  Spawning on your squad? (You get extra points for team activities if you aid your squad and not just your team.)

that's odd.  i was pulling in about 2-3k per round last night, with the exception of the round i joined on the last two objectives.  i got over 700 though.  i ranked up in about 2 hours, mostly playing the medic with small stints as a sniper.  spotting nets you 20 or so if someone kills them while your marker is alive.  you get 20 or 30 i think from assists and 50 from kills.  if you get more than 7 kills with the same weapon, you get 100.  so far, it's been quite a bit slower to rank up, but i've already bumped up my medic to unlock the saw, med kits, and a shotty (class-free i believe).

i do like the slower pace compared to mw2 though as you don't necessarily face an opponent with uber weaponry; they need to work as the class to get the class benefits rather than a general rank that unlocks X.  compared to the first night of mw2 where i ranked up like 8 times.

had a lot of fun playing in a pug last night, except for one stint as a bradley gunner when the driver couldn't drive worth a damn.  all in all, i don't think i lost a match once.

it's been annoying to see a uav up on your side and not getting the benefit of spotting though.  my first and only turn on the nfl box i was spotting as many enemies as possible during cooldowns.  it really helps cut down on flanking maneuvers, so it's pretty annoying when you got someone who camps up and stays beyond visual range.

looking forward to more mp.

FF13 has to be one of the strangest game releases of this generation. Every review seems to shit on it but finish with deeming it a good game.

addition by subtraction?

yeah, it's odd.  i'll probably get this in the end, but i'm not going to jump on it day one.  it's more due to my lukewarm reception of jrpg's as a whole and not necessarily anything about ff13

btw, the review is damn near spoiler free, and even then it's nothing like what you'd expect from a spoiler in typical ff sense.  more of a global turn in the story sense.

EG 's review is up - 8/10

Quote
The Final Fantasy series, with its lengthy cinematics, stubborn style and carefully prescribed limitations, can never hope to please everyone. So it's strange to see it try, and no surprise that the result is not a total success. It's cautious, narrow, far too slow to get going, and is stripped down to such a bare naked form that even some FF traditionalists might find it off-putting.

What's left, though, is faultlessly accomplished, gorgeous to behold and, in the long run, thoroughly enjoyable. For better or worse, it's another new beginning, and that's one Final Fantasy tradition that should never be changed.

sadly though, i've been drafted into MiL's plan and have become Morgan Freeman to her cranky old annoyance so that she can go visit with her friend and gamble 70 miles from home.  meanwhile, teh wife is planning to spend her time (and money) sweeping through over-priced 'discount' outlets of stores that exist not more than 20 minutes from where we live.

definitely heavy rain and red faction guerrilla.  they both do something not done quite the way other games have and fine-tuned it.  that being emotionally investing you to the characters and making other games' environmental destruction look last gen.

damnit i love the war tapes sound mode.  makes it feel like cod 1 with the deafening explosions.

i also love the spas and lmg.  it's going to be good once i get familiar with it.
6932  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy XIII Site Launched on: March 04, 2010, 04:53:45 AM
yup, one of the previews i read pointed it out based on the first 6 hours or so.  you are running from something, have no idea what it is while everyone around you seems to be totally unfazed that the langoliers seem to be chasing you and you don't even reach a town during this portion.  if you get something you want to sell, you can pretty much do it whenever you want.

the guy who wrote it seemed to think it was actually a good thing, but it definitely takes the ff mold and breaks from it so completely it makes me1 >> me2 look like an expansion pack.

hell, i haven't even decided if i'm even interested in a ff game at this point.  sure, the initial buzz and imps thread will be full court pressing my wallet to open, but tbh, i haven't played a jrpg since lost odyssey and the last ff and in both cases, i stalled out quickly.  in LO's case, before the first disc had finished.

not sure what it is, but jrpg's don't do it for me like they did in the old days.

compare that with my 99+ hours in ff7.  had achievements/trophies been around then, i would have gone for all of them.

Gamestop doesn't, but there are other resources available that provide this info.

according to that 7 days ago they were giving 16 bucks for The Saboteur, yesterday they offered me 17 including the 60% trade in bonus.  thumbsdown

there was also a brief time in the beginning where you could trade in me2 for almost full price if you had the card.  sadly, they have since lowered the value to 30 or so.

6940  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Battlefield Bad Company 2 Impressions on: March 03, 2010, 04:57:37 PM
played up past the flashback level and up through part of the next.  i'm really liking the destructible environments and how it allows you to take out entrenched enemies and how it forces you to be mobile.  it seems like a nice take on the idea and you don't have to worry about the wall falling over and hurting you ala red faction.  it's great that heavy gunfire whittles down concrete barriers.  i took out a guy that way.

i have a feeling that bc2 will be the game to rrod my ailing machine though.  it sounded loud enough to need tower clearance.  not even ME2 got it that loud.

that's a great bit of info.  thanks bullwinkle.

so IW may still live, but in what form?  if the contract is nullified, will they be free to walk?  what of the two founders?  tbh, that whole ousting, when it's known that IW isn't wholly owned, seems unusual.
6946  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Battlefield Bad Company 2 Impressions on: March 02, 2010, 10:48:59 PM
hey guys, can we just agree that raz has a different take on how to deal with lamers and move on?  we don't have to agree with the method, but we all can agree about the annoyance.  and in the end, if we all play on the same side, we can avoid people who aren't playing to win?

and raz, while i think your tactics aren't the best method for dealing, i have to ask, were you being serious or more expressing your frustration with these players how you would have liked to deal with them in the past?  i think everyone has had some issue with other people in-game before, so i totally understand wanting to vent about them.

IW is out of the cod business

I doubt it.  They are probably earmarked for a CoD title for 2012 (MW3 perhaps) and I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't targeted for a next gen platform or two (I'll be shocked if someone doesn't launch by Holiday 2012).

perhaps, but their contract was up this year, and without the two heads, whom i fully expect to recruit their colleagues for a spin-away studio, i wonder if whomever is left in charge of IW will be keen to re-up the contract.

although from the looks of the press release, i wonder if they won't just dissolve iw and pick out the cream of the crop to make up the new cod unit.

either way, i don't see IW as an entity any more.

As previously announced, Activision will release a new Call of Duty game from series co-developer Treyarch, responsible for Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World At War, this fall. Developer Infinity Ward is still scheduled to release two map packs for Modern Warfare 2 this year.

In 2011, Activision will release another new Call of Duty game from Sledgehammer Games, the recently formed studio lead by Dead Space creative leads Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey. The title will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre."

yay, action adventure land with a brand-new developer.  looks like treyarch gets shoe-horned in to making what will be the last proper cod sequel.  no resolution for mw2's storyline

Quote
It plans to expand the Call of Duty brand "with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit" with a focus on "high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

ugh, this sounds like cod online with expansion packs instead of sequels.  new genres?  do we need a cod ala endwar and hawx?

btw, i love the pic accompanying the next article on kotaku.  it also tells us that it was the handling of treyarch's games that started this whole mess.

not fond of the kill the sniper comment.  even those people who are after kills instead of objectives contribute to the effort by making it harder for the enemy to take the points.  it's when you end up in a pug with a team 90% committed to sniping.

i didn't get time with the beta to tell, but how are the lmg's in bc2?  i've always loved setting up in a good location, but with a wide open destructible environment, i won't be getting as many opportunities to set up.  are they effective enough vs smaller firearms?

LMG is light-machine gun right?  The medic had one and it was awesome-city mowing down dudes.

yeah, but a medic with an lmg just seems odd.  as long as i can get a good pkd or m60 setup, i'll be good.  holding off the horde is always a great thrill in modern era games.  ww2 was awesome for carbines and that great mix of semi-automatic power and range.

it makes me somewhat sad i never picked up 1943 for the garand.

6956  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Divinity 2 on: March 01, 2010, 06:02:06 PM
i am currently wandering around the southern part of the broken valley and am now strong enough to take on mobs that once saw me run for the hills.  what a difference a couple of levels make.  i was ok with any of the undead mobs, but the black seers/rangers/sergeants would just kick my butt.  i was only able to get into the little cul-de-sac nw of the tower by kiting them and then picking them off at range.

the bow is a very effective way to survive early on.  i got some cheap kills by plinking them, jumping back and repeating and also by jumping on top of rocks to take out fighters.  it doesn't last though as even the fighters start to have some form of ranged attack eventually and of course, you start to face more mages and rangers who would absolutely destroy you should you perch on a rock.

i am unsure if i want to go 2h or dw.  i've found some awesome weapons which make either option doable.  i also rescued someone from a pit and after the fight, he gave me his bow.  nothing any of the merchants sells even comes close.  i really love the things you can discover off the beaten path.   this game rewards you for exploring.

here's a few tips i'd like to pass along.

you definitely want to check out the baker's house in the first village.  he's got an interesting tenant, if you will.

you can safely pick up just about everything you see as it doesn't appear people care if you take their stuff;  very helpful for the food items as you don't start out with healing potions.

if you haven't found out what to do with the body parts you find, check the area around the burnt chapel.  it makes it easier to handle large groups.

you can use the quest items for some of the bounty contracts, but you lose them when you turn it in.  the rewards haven't matched the item you lose.

i found a great merchant out in the wild who sells very rare items.  nothing i can use just yet though.

once you have what you need for the bandit camp, make sure you call in the cavalry; it makes the camp sequence far more manageable.  not sure if you can deal with them another way though.  it's doable at level 10, and you get a number of great weapons too.  the second sequence is much more difficult though, and rife with traps.  there's a trick to making it through the area though, and if you look hard enough, a path will become visible.  spoilers in sequence of how much detail is given away regarding this portion.
Spoiler for Hiden:
seems there's a lot of bodies around, aren't there?
Spoiler for Hiden:
notice how some of them bled?
Spoiler for Hiden:
if you follow the blood, you won't get poisoned

I am enjoying it so far, after about 6 levels in. The mix of abilities you get is nice and it feels like a game where you can play it the way you want wthout being tied to one character type.  It does reward specialization though, as I don't see a way to respec.

The technical jiggles are noticeable though and the game seems to hiccup fairly regularly; not game-breaking but annoying that it happens so often.

Played up through the first big event and the dragon seems interesting but not as smooth as other games where you controlled a dragon.

Glad I picked it up on sale.
