while i love tru for their deals, i absolutely loathe the '10-2pm in-store only' bs.  that 100% ensures i won't be buying it there.  to add to the stupidity, the guy i pre-ordered with last week made no mention of the limited hours aspect.  one big FU to TRU on this one.   finger

Holy cow!  With Gamefly, they're telling me I can buy it for $43.  That's $17 off the price and it would be a new copy.

Not that I'm interested in purchasing it, but a person could definitely save money on new game purchases if they have an open slot with Gamefly when a new release ships.

Yeah I noticed that too.  Not bad!  I got the PS3 Divine Edition, I wonder if they ship you the codes if you keep it?
I've never bought one that did, but I am curious about this too as I have ME2 out from them. Obviously, I'm a little hesitant with a $15 card though, so I'm waiting until the buy price drops a bit.

Getting shipped out his week from gamefly. I'll be playing it Thursday at the earliest, but I am very much looking forward to impressions here.

I did have a preorder at TRU for their deal and to get the two figures (to stand next to the big daddy from the first one), but I have this feeling they will be out by the time I get there. :x
6925  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gamefly - Yea or Nay? on: February 08, 2010, 08:46:01 PM
I've had a majority of good experinces with them over the last few years doing the 'minimal queue, new releases only' trick. Saved me a ton of money and I've played more games I would have skipped otherwise. AC2,L4D2, ME2, and dark void were all delivered week of release and bioshock 2 is on the way now. Downside is I don't tend to have more than 2 or 3 games rented per month. I guess they figure I am a good value as hey don't spend a lot in shipping compared to those who have more games per month.

So, is anyone going to getting this now?  With the big releases of the 1st quarter not even half way out yet, c.o.p. will likely be overlooked. Bad timing for a game like this, but I expect the hardcore stalker fans will be all over it. I haven't decided wether to get this now or wait for the summer lull. I burned out early with cs and played the first one all the way through. Had there not been such a Xmas sale with steam, d2d, etc. I would have been playing cs.

I'm still in the opinion that you avoid Apple first gen items as 2nd gen are just around the corner.

it amuses me that this same behavior applies to both apple and MS, ie 'wait for the first service pack'.

Quote
Apple's business model for books, which the company has kept under tight wraps, shifts the focus away from the bargain-basement prices Amazon has made popular, according to publishers that have met directly with the company. Apple is asking publishers to set two e-book price points for hardcover best sellers: $12.99 and $14.99, with fewer titles offered at $9.99. In setting their own e-book prices, publishers would avoid the threat of heavy discounting. Apple would take a 30% cut of the book price, with publishers receiving the remaining 70%.

Apple's vision is at odds with Amazon.com, which has shaken the book industry by slashing prices of e-books on its Kindle reader and making the $9.99 e-book bestseller a fixture.

how is this not price fixing again?

i also find it amusing that book publishers are as swept up in the drm protection as music labels were 5 years ago.  will we eventually see drm-free ebooks that we can transfer to any capable device?

as you can tell from my avatar pic, i picked this up.  going back to this after 6 months and i still love playing it.  i miss not having  shadows, but they aren't rendering correctly.  other than that, it looks beautiful.  sharper textures and much higher resolution, and i have one of those xbox wireless controller adapters, so i don't have to fumble with the keys.  i also get the added perk of getting points replaying it.  still one of the best action games of '09.

And when the scanning report goes from "Poor" to "Depleted", don't believe it. I've found a couple of big deposits on a planet after I ran it from "Rich" to "Depleted". Also I've not had that much confidence in the above mentioned quick scan. I just spin the planet under my stationary scanner. To mark my starting point I use two probes next to each other at the equator. Then I break the planet up into seven latitude bands to do a thorough check. Time consuming, but it does seem to be successful for me.

no wonder you hate it.  that's pretty in depth.  you'll end up in better shape than quick scanners though.

True, and when you install a progam, especially something like office, you also end up with a whole bunch of dll files that are copied and registered into the system. Without those, you'll hit errors as soon as you start it.

Given that, if you can find an iso, you can easily retrieve the serial key from the existing system using a keyfinder called majic jellybean. Horrible name that probably gets your suspicions up, but it's legit and finds keys from many installed programs.

If nothing else, you can conert them to use openoffice. It's compatible and it's free.

i got lucky and found this in the mail last night from gamefly.  first impressions after 3 hours is that i really like this so far.  i'm in the same boat as shephard when it comes to trusting cerberus or EDI though.  i love that i ended up with scars on my face, as it just fits with what he's been through.  i do wish they had allowed you to import the face and then modify it though, but in the context of how much time has passed, i can live with it as it is.

i really like that the first person i recruited from the old crew from ME1 is someone i finished the game with.  makes the continuation and the reunion that much better.  getting used to the combat mechanics as it seems a bit more shooty this go around.  i like the faster power regen, but dislike the global timer.  also, as an infiltrator, i really miss the assassinate skill.  ammo is a bit odd too, considering that once i had the skills and a good rifle, i stuck with the sniper rifle/pistol  backup for most of ME1.  can't do that here when you get all of 10 shots before you run out.  i hope that you'll get enough upgrades to not be forced back to pistols all the time.

bad news is that during the first 45 minutes, my game froze up three times.  after that, i installed to the hd and went the rest of the night without crashing.  it would be a huge pita if the box died now, but at least it would be before the warranty is up.

it really bums me that multitasking is out.  when you have such a powerful device in your hands, running just one app on it at a time knocks it down a notch, especially compared to similar devices.

the 3g is nice, but $130 nice?  they need to drop the price difference down for me, but having 3g would make this a glorified phone with voip, no?

6942  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass effect 2 Launch and impressions (the REAL One) on: January 25, 2010, 08:59:45 PM
from what i understand, the extra 10 levels will bump you up to level 5 or so and *something extra*.  the side missions could give you a better spread of starting stuff/side plots.  seeing as how you could play through the first and doing everything completely different, it should have been made optional for everything you accomplished attributed to the main save you used throughout me 1.

from what i have read, it also doesn't count if you only played up to level 60 in a playthrough, but didn't beat it.

here's something i haven't seen/heard yet.  do the achievements grant you bonuses in game?  i loved that aspect in the first and somewhat disappointed that other games haven't done the same thing.
6943  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dark Void, from the makers of Crimson Skies on: January 25, 2010, 08:53:31 PM
i finished this last night and am going to go back and try a few things i missed.  hardcore is a definitely no walk in the park, but it's certainly less frustrating than some other games (i'm looking at you, modern warfare).  the biggest gripe i have is with the escort missions, but i came to realize that i was more frustrated with the game's instruction than anything else.  the ark escort mission is much more difficult for this reason.  the generators are the key and if you can't keep the fighters off it them, you lose in no time at all.  unfortunately, while you may be able to use one of your weapons to recharge them, you can't swap out mid mission unless you exit to the main menu.  there's also little instruction that you could do exactly that (recharge them) and instead it feels like every bogie in the sector is capable of taking it out by themselves.  i spent more time on that mission than anywhere else except one sequence against three archons (and the ark, again).

then there are the glitches.  i had run into them twice before (early on, before the jetpack) and during a rescue mission.  the first glitch was resolved when i restarted the checkpoint, but i had to restart the rescue level from scratch.  when i hit the last sequence of the ark mission, it appeared to glitch again at the very end.  i paused it and went to search for others who hit the same problem. here, instead of a glitch, the game just fails to update your objectives, so i (and many others) ended up thinking it was glitched.  oh, fun.  nothing like fighting through a difficult and frustrating mission only to get stuck on the last section.

if they had addressed both of those issues earlier, it would have stayed a 80-85.  i do think some of the drawbacks pointed out in the reviews are valid; bland textures and levels while flying, getting killed while in a qte from outside sources. i do think the game is fun beyond those small issues and is only held back due to the glitches.

estimated time to finish is around 15-18 hours on hard, probably 12 or so on normal.  some replayability due to hardcore difficulty and goodie hunting, but no game play choices to change and no multiplayer (a big negative, as mp could have been a great mix of tribes, crimson skies, and gow, plus vehicles.  potential is great for mp in a sequel)

The text review is pretty spoiler-free. However, do NOT watch the video review, as it has plenty of spoilery stuff, including most of the scenes from the launch trailer (but shown out of order).

On the same page is a somewhat humorous 5 minute video summary of the first Mass Effect for those who never played the game.

yeah, you should be ok reading it if you are on the fence at all.  nothing that i would consider spoilerish.  in essence, all he says is things relate to ME1 and may be either revelations or plot twists involved.  if you played ME, you can probably think of several aspects of its plot that fit that description.

this is going to be good.

The loading screen is right about the pack guns though. I upgraded them and finally got a good place to use them on the prison break level: took out a bunch of those cannon using watchers with 2 passes on hardcore. It also tears up the knights something fierce.

There have been a few glitches though;  I've had to quit and reload from the dashboard as the last defend section of the prison level wouldn't trigger. I also had an enemy go AWOL on me and I couldn't find it to clear the area.

The game defintely grows on you, doesn't it?

Sounds like this just happened to be a cool game for reviewers to rail on.

i figured as much when another forum basically panned the demo and said it was bad-mediocre, and then i enjoyed it.  the reviews said that controls were fine and the action was good, so i don't know why they ended up at 5's and 6's.  at this point, i'd give it a solid 8.5 as it has done everything it set out to do very well.

ya i like the ai too.  i was a fan of the demo and yup the full game still managed to be better than i prepared.  been pleasantly surprised still, the game keeps things interesting and so far has yet to go stale (still keeping a really good mix of indoor/outdoor/flying and "transition" missions).

caine youll find that circle strafing doesnt seem to be the way to go in this game.  its more about finding a nice bit of cover, suppressing / killing off a couple guys then moving to flank while also watching your own.  i only circle strafe when im one on one and pretty much have the situation in hand.  otherwise the hit to aim and being out in the open is just far too risky.

i guess i needed to be more specific about strafing.  i meant it in the classic military sense, as in ground attack with the jetpack's guns at flight.  i tend to move too fast to get many shots on them before i have to divert or go vtol.  it's a good challenge though.

Played through act 1 last night and the full game is defintely better than the demo led
me to believe. I'm having fun with it so far even though I can't strafe ground troops very well. The vertical cover works pretty well and the ai puts up a decent fight at the highest difficulty without resorting to triple health or huge spawns.   thumbsup

i just finished up me 1 last night, oddly enough for the first time since burning out on it way back.  not sure i liked the coin flip aspects to the ending, but i do hope they port the major aspects of the game into the sequel so i can get into it like a movie would.  i also hope they make it useful to have buffed up my sniper rifle in the first and start me out with something nice.  hell, give me a worn down version of the one i got with scuff marks and i'll be happy, even though it will be nerfed in some form.  i would like to see the character's face look slightly older this time.

if nothing else, open up a few side missions due to all the exploring i did.

seeing as how none of the major retailers are doing a great special (tru has one, but it's not that great) i think i'll just grab it from best buy on launch.

6956  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Saboteur on: January 20, 2010, 05:04:41 PM
no, but then i never even found the midnight club to begin with.  i'll have to try that before i send the game away.

total finish time for me was just over 48 hours, with everything completed.  i found the best way to take out the free play targets was to take the long way to a mission objective and walk there, taking out anything i could on the way.  i also went on a few rampages and cleared out whole areas that looked challenging.  once you get the ability to plant bombs without raising suspicion, you can really do some damage.  i was planting them near soldiers feet and trying to set up chain reactions.  the explosives can easily take out more than one target if they are close enough, and because you can set a tnt without lighting it, you can also use it alongside rdx to take out tanks.  those were ridiculously easy though;  seems the nazis only consider your actions suspicious if you jump on top the tank or stand right next to them.  most of the time, you can walk right up to the tank, get a bit suspicious until you are right next to it, light the tnt and run.  not even so much as an alarm and you get away before the reinforcements arrive, without using a uniform.

i have some tricks if anybody is finding particular perks hard to get.  there is also one major exploitable glitch you can use if you get tired of stealthing the free play targets, but it requires you to not beat the game.  there is an exploit for the free races as well and one for getting the 5 generals perk quite early on.

over all, it was a great time and it just makes it worse that it's their last.  FN EA.   finger

If it's enjoyable to get or something that I don't have to go out of my way to get, then I'll chase down a few. I won't punish myself by drudging through something monotonous or frustrating; veteran mode on the first mw broke my desire to play it ever again or even bother with it beyond a few levels.

If I'm so close to the 1k, and I haven't burnt out, I'll try for it, but I have a few games with 1 or 2 left that I'll never bother going after.
