6841  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What is is true of you, re: video game addiction? on: September 09, 2009, 05:14:49 AM
i get addicted to a game as long as it usually takes for me to finish it, like with batman, rfg, ghostbusters, puzzle crack, prof lyton, picross, or those that i rack up so many hours that i feel like i've got my money's worth out of before i finish it. fo3, far cry 2, oblivion.  i rarely finish the second group in fact as it's rare that i go back to them after a long hiatus.  i try to get as many games on sale/clearance and sell or trade them once i finish if i feel burnt out on them and have no desire to revisit them.  the lower prices we've seen lately means my collection is full of stuff i've put in less than 5 hours worth.  you can see those ones in my game history as they all have less than 250 points.

i try to play as many things as look interesting as i know once the game has aged a bit, i will not likely play it at all.

i should break down and just sell the bulk of em, but i'm reluctant to part with them just yet.
6842  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Cold Feet? on: September 09, 2009, 05:06:47 AM
i tend to ignore the big name hype games until the last freaking minute.  it happened with both halo 3 and odst.  i knew they would be fun, i knew i would enjoy them, but secretly wanting to not get them, only to buckle under the peer pressure to play the damn things with everybody else the first week.  too hard to miss out you know?  i've put back plenty of games that i was interested in, but i also think that if it's not something i'm that interested in, i can always sell it after the honeymoon period.

gamefly helps with the launch day urges during the busy season though.  regret level goes down when i know i can get it without spending up front.

my dad's GF has what i consider to be one of the worst pieces of horrid musical vomit as her 'calling in' song, you know, the one that plays in your head when you call her.  to make matters worse, my dad has one too, and he never even has his phone on him when he gets home, so you have to call her to get a hold of him.

what is this pile of garbage you ask?  i'd tell you, but i have been very successful getting it wiped out of my head today and wouldn't dare thinking about it.  it's one of those "i'm coming out as a lesbian" theme songs you hear plastered on easy listening radio trashcans (and their commercials).  now there's a genre worth wiping out wholesale.

yet another movie that i would love to see in the theater but will end up watching at home long after the dvd hits.  been a bad year for me going out to see anything.

this looks pretty damn cool and i have the theme on my XB dashboard.

I thought Echelon was awful and perhaps the worst game purchase I've ever made. It was incredibly buggy and difficult, and you don't even have chaffe to defend against missiles. If anyone shot missiles at you, you were pretty much instantly dead and there was nothing you could do about it.

The Freespace series, however, is all sorts of awesome. It's worth getting a joystick for. You'll never really feel like you're flying with the mouse and keyboard.

i remember having only a smattering of fun with it and that was due to the low level flight and the ground effects you got from flying nap-of-the-earth.  i never got very far with it though, and even with the patches, it was definitely a very flawed game.  sad, it had potential too.  i also grabbed the sequel for a few bucks some years later, but didn't get much out of it either.  the community was pretty memorable though, and i still remember how pissed everyone got when the sequel was announced while we waited for the promised 'uber' patch.  also one of the biggest regrets and sadly a recurring thing with many early eastern european games.
6847  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: September 01, 2009, 06:56:05 PM
a new addition to the top down dual stick shooter came out a while ago and i am enjoying it a lot more than minigore or idracula

alive 4 ever takes it's inspiration from one of the big games of last year and uses many of the same types of enemies.  it also has co-op, which could be very useful.

30 levels (pretty much the same layout, sadly) with both primary and bonus objectives.  those bonus objectives give you special equipment (extra clip, hp, attribute, etc).  you earn money to buy better weapons (4 main, 1 sub and 3 levels of each) and xp to upgrade your abilities (ammo, crit %, hp, and 'curing', 20 points of each) and 4 characters to play.  each starts with a boost to one of the 4 attributes and a different starting weapon.

so far, it's been a pretty fun little game and not just a one trick pony like many of the dual stick shooters out there.

it's still a buck for now with a rising price to $4 by the end of the month.  get it while it's cheap. 4.5 stars with 492 reviews so far.

rise of lost empires is a traditional 2d rts game which reminds me of warcraft 2.  i haven't put much time into it yet, but it's doing fairly well review wise and is also at a buck for now.  a free version is available too.

2079 is a pretty little geo wars style shooter, but not as deep as isotope.  free for a while at least.

picked this up and played quite a bit last night.  i just faced
Spoiler for Hiden:
bane and made my way through the bat cave.
hard to believe it's just 18% finished.  i take my time in most sections to hunt out the puzzles after taking down the henchmen.  i have to agree this is one of the best games of the year and i'm also getting the bioshock buzz at times with the creepy environments, except this time, i'm the big daddy.  this game gives you the SC buzz if you want or the stand up brawler if you just want to mix it up.

i'm having a great time so far and i'm looking forward to getting more time with it.

found the riddler maps in two sections so far, and it's implemented just perfectly.  just enough info to point you in the right direction, but not giving you the answer either.

sorry for unintentional spoileridge.  backing out of the thread now.

unfortunately, the level 20 revealed map (awesome, if not too late to really help) doesn't have any of the card spots marked, so it will be a long hunt to find it.

Not sure why you'd say that. They are definitely on the map.

i hope i missed it then.  i only remember seeing two items on the map, but i didn't spend a huge amount of time on it.
6851  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]Shadow Complex on: August 26, 2009, 09:37:19 PM
finished this up last night.  one of the best games of the year.

got all but 1 missile pack, one passcard and the last piece of armor.  unfortunately, the level 20 revealed map (awesome, if not too late to really help) doesn't have any of the card spots marked, so it will be a long hunt to find it.

i did get the gold bars, so i'll be prepared for a hardcore run.

i'll be looking at the dlc when it comes out and i look forward to a sequel.  just a great game.

well, i found the off-the-beaten-path area, but it slides an invulnerable barrier behind you after you pass through it.  there's a armor pickup not far from it, but not a whole lot else.  i'll look around some more when i get home.  thanks guys

i've hit a weird snag trying to get up a wind tunnel.  there's a huge fan above and two vents at the top on either side you are able to get into.  i know how to get up using what i have, but the aiming is wonky when i try to get up the left side.  instead of aiming at the wall, i aim at a point just in the background so i can't ascend.  there's a grenade pack on the right side, but it's a dead end.  i found a trapdoor further past this point, but it's all red doors and dead end tunnels.  blue line is pointing up the way with the fan.   what am i missing?
6856  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Batman : Arkham Asylum on: August 25, 2009, 05:11:22 PM

batman 360 at tru, assuming i can get there and get a copy.  assuming that, i'll then turn around and get layton with the card.
6858  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP]MGS: Peace Walker on: August 20, 2009, 04:32:58 PM
you didn't play far enough in then.  that's the oddest game in the whole series once it gets to the second half.

but you have to admit, mgs 3 getting set as a prequel is pretty odd too, but nevertheless, completely awesome.  i would recommend you grabbing 3 and playing it.
6859  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]Shadow Complex on: August 20, 2009, 04:29:45 PM
so i started this up last night around 10 and got completely absorbed in it until 1:30 this morning, then woke up early to play another hour before leaving for work.  i have just acquired the foam gun and some extra ammo cans for it.  ~40% items found so far, at least that much explored.

it's been an awesome game all around so far and even though i would love for the camera to zoom out or pan when enemies are off-screen, otherwise it's pretty much the perfect example of a 2d -vania game.  hell, considering how often we get these (damn near never, nowadays), this could be the last great 2d -vania's we ever get on a console.

the controls are very responsive and i have never died due to it, as i did so often with bc: re-armed.  the graphics are sharp and detailed and even though you do see a lot of the military-industrial pallet, it's perfectly suited.  you do get some awesome outside vistas and some interesting indoor ones as well.  the indiana jones inspired moment is a great set and doesn't feel tacked on.  enemies are pretty fun to fight with and there is a good mix of easy 'ambush kills' and straight up firefights.  the bosses have been easy so far though.  either they are just a 'big guy with lots of health' or they are the puzzle type.  the puzzle aspect has not been all that difficult to figure out either, so that's good/bad.  except for one such battle, that part of the fight has also been optional, so you don't feel forced into one type of combat.

i really love the genre and have played most of the gba/ds generation of both the metroid and the castlevania games, so finding items is pretty easy and the flashlight helps immensely.  i anticipate going through for the 100% and 15% found achievements on this one.  it's too bad they didn't allow you more than one save game though, so that's a bummer.

this ranks as one of the best games of the year and if it doesn't get the credit it deserves and a sequel, i will be very disappointed.

one other aspect to the slim, and this time it's a negative.  for the 2 people who used the 'install other OS' option, know that the slim will not have it.  which kind of sucks, in a way, but eh, if i was going to put linux on the ps3 i have, i would have done it already.

i do think it could have been cool though.

any comparison shots of this vs the ps2 slim?  i could get that one standing up under the ledge of my tv stand.

iirc, after the ee version hit, the soundtrack and extra music were available to dl straight from their site.  that's how i got them.

if i didn't already have the regular version, and a stalled game in chapter 2 to fall back on, i would be all over this.

6873  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Jobless graduate sues her college for $70,000 on: August 04, 2009, 04:22:36 PM
hell, i know many who fell into this kind of predicament.  a double major in econ and philosophy grad bank teller (much better now, but it wasn't quick or easy).  a pre med student who washed out and now works in a movie theater.  a mechanical and materials science grad who was let go after 5 years and is still looking, 6 months after.  a drafter with ~10 years experience, let go after the firm he worked for scaled back into hibernation mode and only exists as a business entity.  a commercial designer laid off from a big corporation, still looking for anything she's qualified to do.  a pharmacy tech who saw the demand drop off while the pool increased, still looking 18 months later while doing odd jobs.

it's a hard life and lesson to learn, but you need a dose of reality.  an education does not guarantee you a career, and in a recession, nobody is immune.  learn this now or get on the next shuttle to the sun.

looks good, but i would love to see more variety in the zombies.  there's a screenshot posted where the same two zombies are repeated 4 times.  kind of takes you out of the game a bit when you notice it.  they even have the exact same pose.

i'll give the demo a try and see how it plays.

maybe they can make the aliens appear to be misunderstood, that where they came from biting you in the face and impregnating you is actually the equivalent of saying  'hey, how are you doing?  how's the wife and kids?'.

6880  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Alien the Prequel on: August 01, 2009, 05:23:00 PM
if they make it a different take on the whole alien one aspect where a research ship finds the space hulk and then has their own survival/destruction story ala alien with the ending being crashlanding the hulk onto the planet, then it could be good, if a bit trite.

or they could rehash alien 4 with a research ship working on the alien as a weapon and stupidly let it loose.

really though, it will be interesting to see if they can come up with a story not too similar to the other movies.
