6841  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (01/24) on: January 26, 2011, 05:23:23 AM
picked up TW2 and have DS2 coming in via gamefly.
6842  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Two Worlds 2 Impressions on: January 26, 2011, 05:21:48 AM
I stopped and picked this up on the way home and so far, I like what I see.  Sure, parts of the manual are in German, but everything is pretty easy to pick up after the tutorial.  it does hand hold you ever so slightly, but after that you are on your own.  I went out walking and spent a good chunk of time killing the local wildlife and looting their corpses.

they added in quite a bit this time around but took out the weapon buff method from the first one.  instead, you can break down items into their component parts at any time and use them to upgrade the others.  that's skill dependent of course as is the alchemy you can do.  they wisely made it so you don't have to backtrack to camp to do this stuff, but made that easier if you wanted to.  same with magic spell creation. you can mix and match the spell type and form whenever you want and assign whichever you want.  it's not as packed with hotkeys as sacred 2 but it's more than enough.  the hotkeys also shit according to your stance and equipped weapon.  if you sheath your weapon, you can sneak around for a backstab as well.  there are a handful of skills in the three branches and you can respec at certain vendors.  i have also been granted skill points for picking locks and after killing a number of enemies.

the lock pick mini game is different.  it's a timing game where the pick must hit the groove in a set of descending rings.  the pick rotates on its own but you can swap direction whenever you want.  from the looks of it, the skill level ties in to how long you can hold your hand steady so you can't get the higher level locks as easily.

combat is pretty hectic and you can be swarmed if you aren't careful.  you can kick off an aoe spell or a crowd sweeper move if you have the right weapon.  you could also use an arrow as distraction to split them up, traps to snare them or hurt them, multi-arrows to hurt more than one at a time and should you get the chance, the ability to kill them silently with a backstab.

graphically, it's pretty nice to look at.  lots of good shadow and lighting work, little environmental details that add to the views and none of the technical issues that plagued the original.  it also seems to have a rather expansive world with minimal amounts of oblivion-esque load zones.  decent voice work all around and i like the ability to pan around during conversations.

i haven't even tried the mp yet, which offers the usual competitive modes plus a separate co-op campaign, horde mode and the quirky village mode.  could be interesting.

anybody else pick this up today?

6844  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Protogalaxy on: January 26, 2011, 04:45:56 AM
picked it up during the holiday sale and it's pretty interesting for a shooter. i like the gravity well as a weapon approach.  haven't played much of it yet though.

there are a few random lines in german too spread throughout the manual.

so far, i have played a few hours and i like what i see.  very nice atmosphere and i am enjoying the combat.
6846  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (01/24) on: January 24, 2011, 07:12:57 AM
Two Worlds 2 on the 360.

for the wary, here are the deals on the big games this week courtesy of kmart.  not sure if the 1-30 date is correct though.
1-25 Dead Space 2 Free 1600 XBLA Points or $20 PSN for Free
1-30 Two Worlds II $39.99 (Reg. $59.99)

hmm, read the thread but it appears that TW2 goes on sale the week after release (which is a horrible promo btw) but you can buy it this week and get a price adjust next week.

now that strangers wrath is apparently playable also draws my interest.

stayed up late with lbp2 and did not get any time away in the wastelands.  it's going to be tough after this week with that and two worlds 2.  rpg's are my bane.  love playing them but never get enough time to finish them before the next one comes out.

never heard of that one before so I looked it up.   I hope they update it, it sounds really freakin' cool.  or even better, Notch should buy it and incorporate it into the game.

Oh yeah, there's certainly a ton of options available to Notch right now. With the money he's pulling in, maybe he could hire a few of the top modders to officially help with survival mode. Battle Towers, Mo' Creatures, and others bring a whole new experience to the game.

any chance this works in smp?  would love that

between the asking price and this, i think i'll hold off a year or so.

i also intend to pick up an ipad and upgrade the pc this year in time for ES:V so getting a second mobile gaming system is looking a bit of a reach.

Just picked up the 2 Riddick games for 5 bucks on sale which is cool as I havn't ever played it and always wanted to  thumbsup
it's worth it for butcher bay alone.

I just couldn't finish that game. I ended up encountering too many sections where it looks like you're supposed to sneak past and you're heavily punished for not doing so, yet the enemy is placed in such a way that getting past undetected is next to impossible.

finished it twice now.  once back on '04 and again last year on the 360.  still as good even now.  never got that far into the next chapter though.

pretty much just minecraft, but not to guard against the spiders.  we spent the weekend building up an almost completely self-sustaining base in the ocean with multiple above and below surface floors and an underground rail line back to the mainland.

all in all, a terrible way to end the season.  i expected as much for the first half of the game.  too bad they finally hit their game in the end of the fourth.  could have been much better, which is at least a glimmer of hope more for next year.

at least i have my weekends back for gaming.

service is great, modem is awful.  i've had to call in to have the ip reset half dozen times in just a year.  damn thing just won't renew like it should.  which brings me to the second part.  their tier 1 is only slightly ahead of space monkeys on the intuitive discovery tests.  i've had to explain what mac cloning is so many times i decided to skip that and lie when they ask me if the router is plugged in.
