i had some problems the week mw2 released and thought it was either bad live service or something isp related.  turned out that my in house wiring is going TU and if i skip the router and switch setup, directly connecting to the modem, everything is great.  it's likely an issue with the switch installed that connects all the rooms in the house, but i haven't got a replacement for it yet.  that's what i am hoping for at least.

Despite the shovelware-sounding name, it looks like Puzzler World might be pretty good.  I've done some Link-a-Pix puzzles (they're similar to Picross, only with pairs of numbers you have to connect within the grid) in Games Magazine, but it would be nice to have a digital version.

FYI, there are some fantastic apps for iPhone with that type of puzzle under the name PathPix and PathPix Pro

and likely a whole lot cheaper too.  i shall take a look.

and i am definitely IN on shooter and maybe for zelda if there are any sales and i can find a copy.

that's awesome news, huw.  gratz to you and the whole family.  it's great your daughter is excited to see him.  i think my daughter's first reaction was pretty favorable, up until she realized how much time a newborn requires and how tired we always were as a result.  she was 2 though, so not anywhere near as old as yours is.

i also watched the first two episodes of this and now have a level of respect for him bordering on david caruso level.  he's so over the top serious with his persona that you can't help not appreciating him for it.  and yet, i get the distinct impression that this is a guy worthy of mockingly deriding him from behind an internet persona.  you would never want to mock him in person though as i now know how good a shot he is with a firearm and up close isn't any better.

if i keep watching this, it will completely destroy my image of him as the deadly lump who could kill you if you walked too close to the couch.
6765  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Vista Service Pack 2 on: December 07, 2009, 05:47:35 PM
you think that's bad?  we have an auto-patching system at work which works great for most updates.  well, the week sp2 was released, ie8 also hit the web.  its install came first and was the auto patch could not get it going due to a forced eula screen agreement, so when we ran this during our maintenance window, we expected a long delay due to sp2.  we checked the progress and found the stoppage.  had to manually go through 150 servers in less than two hours and get the installs going, then wait for them to finish so we would be assured everything came back up.  oh, that was fun.  my manager didn't leave that night until almost 1 and we still have servers without sp2 on them.

to make it worse, the install time on vista's sp2 is about half that of server 2008.

did some digging as i somewhat suspect this might be affecting a machine at home.  found this

the best part:

Before setting autotuninglevel, you have to netsh, interface, tcp and then
SET HEURISTICS DISABLED

they went in through the netsh shell, conversely, this should also work:

netsh interface tcp SET HEURISTICS DISABLED

you can check this with:

netsh interface tcp SHOW HEURISTICS

then run:

set global autotuninglevel=disabled

i also consider myself lucky in that i've only had one psu die (coincidentally, also an antec in a sonata case) on an actively used machine, which i replaced with a much nicer one, which i was able to get on sale.  i must have researched every model i could find on the shelf before i did and it was then i learned about the significance of the rails and all that stuff you don't see on posted on cheaper models.  a buddy of mine who had the same case had his die and take out his os drive, a 72gb raptor.  this was back when those were easily running for more than 2 bucks a gig.  adding insult to injury, his died the night we went to a lan party.  hooked everything up and poof.
6768  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Server 2003 won't respond to ping request from XP machines on: December 07, 2009, 05:17:05 PM
i am inferring from your description that the other servers are pingable from your clients, but not to the DC.  is this the case with both hostname and IP address?  that they can access their shares on the DC is a good thing, but odd that it doesn't connect during logon.  i would hazard a guess and say that the shares are mapped via IP?  if that's the case, you could add an entry to the clients' host file to get up and running until you can track this down.

other than that, i would like to get some more details.  are the clients static IP or DHCP?  if DHCP, what provides it?  check if it's assigning addresses correctly (release & renew).

almost grabbed all of the glyphs last night, but decided to snag all the feathers wherever i went and grabbed a map.  man, some of them are pretty much only going to get noticed one time during the game and i would have never found them without help.  there's one on the back wall of a church viewpoint location way out in the middle of nowhere in tuscany that would have either taken hours to stumble upon or would have been the last one i couldn't track down in that area.

at least i was able to get a decent system to track all of them in the big towns, even if it means i have to hit every location again.  it's better than looking at all of venice at one time and knowing that you still have half of them to get.  would almost have been better to not grab any of them at all without the map, so at least you know what you got.

Yeah, that's the thing- I also only found one clue.  I still don't know how I was supposed to figure it out.

What's funny is that I looked at the strategy guide and I think they had the same problem- most of the other glyph solutions offer up an explanation on how you could solve it in addition to the actual solution itself.  For the bunker they didn't even bother and just put the solution in and nothing else.

for others who may be stumped by it here is the way to solve the Bunker without me telling you what the code is:

Spoiler for Hiden:
apparently each straight line in a symbol is how you tell what number it corresponds to.  the < = 2, the diamond within another diamond = 8 and the square with a slash in it was 5, etc etc. if there was anything curved it didn't match with anything.

Yes but that doesn't tell you which part to line the wheel up with.

Spoiler for Hiden:
That's what confused me- You can clearly see the < in the pictures but in the others puzzles of that type there was typically another number for you to equate it to and I never could find one in that puzzle.

yeah, the damn bunker was the last one i attempted last night. i got the same hint ceekay points out but even with that in mind wasn't able to brute force the lock the way the others were.

for the most part, the glyphs were either pretty well done (picture rotation or puzzle grouping) but those damn wheels just got annoying and the hints they give you were pretty hit or miss.

i still think ezio should have finished off the spaniard, and that given how many times you could have done so earlier kind of comes off as a c--ktease when you don't actually do it.

Spoiler for Hiden:
That would have been kind of hard to finagle.  Borgia didn't die until 1503 and had the symptoms of a fever.  They could have had Ezio poison him to fit in with the historical record but that would have been kind of anti-climactic.

Spoiler for Hiden:

so three of the original main cast are there and the others are basically making cameos?  not sure how long this will last, kind of like the 70's show without foreman or kelso.

scrubs was always about the characters and their quirks and interactions.  with so many gone, i think the chemistry they had is gone as well.  if the writers can pull this off, it will be a surprise.
6779  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Assassin's Creed 2 interest? (Now with Impressions - starting on pg 2) on: December 02, 2009, 05:24:32 PM
yeah, the last two tombs were a pita, as was the third round of the ctf match you get shoved into.  there's just not enough precision to have timed sections like that with ezio not being as exact as altair was.  i have skipped all of the races except one and i probably won't bother with them as they will probably just annoy me.  i will do most of the side quest assassin/beat up missions now that i have finished the game.

i still need to track down and solve 3 glyphs and find the damn feathers (55 so far, but the rest are going to be a pita as well, i'm guessing).  and i've had a hell of a time getting the sand and sweep achievements due to always getting interrupted before i can get enough enemies affected.  i also need to climb the last few viewpoints i somehow missed the first time.

"WTF" spoiler
Spoiler for Hiden:
i picked up on the fact she was talking to desmond pretty quickly, but it was still pretty cool that they went that way.  not sure i like the new meta story element, but that's mostly due to what i already know about the whole magnetic pole switch problem they threaten you with.  i thought the last sequence was interesting and like that you get to use the same trick played on altair.  i still think ezio should have finished off the spaniard, and that given how many times you could have done so earlier kind of comes off as a c--ktease when you don't actually do it.

i also like the way they played the credits and how they ended the game this time.  it does seem pretty odd though that they hook you up in the van.  if the equipment was so easily used that way, why not just drive around and access the animus that way instead of going to the trouble of finding a location you expect to be found eventually?

i am also looking forward to the dlc as it gives them a chance to fill in the missing sequences and also hints at some pretty cool events to take part in.

Kotaku (i know, i know) has forwarded on a comment by one of the guys behind fc2 that #3 is 'looking pretty exciting'.  of course, in typical rumor mill style, no details were given at all.

so, this begs the question, what would you like to see in fc3?  where should it be set?  given that the end of fc2
Spoiler for Hiden:
kills off every single named mercenary and the jackal, it means it's unlikely to have anything to do with fc2, unless they re-write some of it.

personally, i would love to have some form of aircraft to fly around in, even an ultralight.  expand the setting so we get more than jungle and desert and make it so more than just the grass and trees catch fire.  hell, let the buildings burn and collapse, and stay persistent.  make the night time a dangerous time to be outside and have wildlife that can and will hunt you down.  have more than just enemies in the world and implement some form of mercenaries' disguises so you can actually drive around without being everybody's target.  or working factions at the least.  as for setting, how about eastern europe, possibly a similar state to boznia, with the threat of usa/russian involvement.  or maybe indonesia.  as for the weapons, let us mod them somehow.

oh, and dump the malaria angle.  that was interesting, but annoying.

I can tell you from experience that my backlog hasn't even seen daylight since I picked up MW2.  I had to force myself to play my GT Madden league game with Captain Cavement despite countless invites to play MW2 MP but immediately following our game I was back on the battlefield.

Looking foward to playing with you.   ninja2

I tried to resist, I even finished a few games that had been sitting around in my backlog, but I can't hold back any longer.  My gaming time has decreased immensley since COD4, so I'll be casual at best, probably only play with GT'ers.

What's the word on Support Gunners?  How do the BIG guns fair?

i stick with the rpd on any large map and fair pretty well, especially with the forward grip attachment.  it takes a wild burst and steadies it so it barely moves.  once i got Bling, i added in a sight with it for big maps and it really helps.  the biggest advantage is not having to worry about ammo shortages.  biggest downfall with bling over sleight of hand pro is slower ads speed means you end up spraying more in short sudden fights.

after getting hit hard with the flu last week, i'm hurting to get back in and i'll probably be rusty as hell once i do, nevermind the loss of leveling time.

uncharted 2's sp is freaking amazing, and all signs point to a healthy and fun mp side as well.  mw2's sp is fun, but it doesn't have the legs (5.5 hours would have been soundly panned without the mp years ago) and comes off as a not-quite-there attempt to one up the first one.

batman is also a great game, as was rfg.  i the end, i think uncharted takes the lead for the sp action with batman getting the nod for best overall sp experience.  rfg perfectly created an environment and the tools to bring it all down.  warning nailed it; it changed the way we approach other games.  it was revolutionary in that regard (pun intended, fully appropriate)

Paul on OO already posted on how that exact same premise has been used in fiction for a very long time now.  Lovecraft loved using that premise.  But plenty of other video games also use the premise, with games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and more.  Heck, every RPG known to man probably has "A Town With A Secret".

fallout 3's instance of this was particularly notable.  hell, they had a few of them.
