6761  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (1/11) on: January 11, 2010, 08:37:56 AM
Nada.  Likely nothing until next month.  Still undecided on ME2
6762  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: The Steam Holiday sale is live! Daily deals too! on: January 04, 2010, 09:13:57 PM
well, i'm slightly annoyed at both steam and myself, and my isp too tbh.  i bought the meridian 4 package from steam when i only intended to get the shadowgrounds pack.  my isp has had connection problems the last two weeks and has been intermittent throughout the sale, so i missed many of the one day deals.  well, with yesterday being the last, i stayed online until past 1 so i could get some of the encores and other sale items i was interested in.  i did get a handful of games in one transaction, then remembered a few others, so i tried for those too.  keep in mind, the whole time, my modem keeps dropping and refreshing the connection, sometimes a few cycles of trying this before i was able to get through a purchase, so i was very careful to get the transaction done in time before a dropped connection reset my shopping cart.  to top this all off, i have been fighting off a sinus infection and had taken an advil and a benadryl earlier.  (in hindsight, probably not a good thing to do before shopping on-line)

so, i found that both shadowgrounds games were bundled for a buck more than the sequel, so i got that one plus zombie driver and was going through the purchase when my dsl dropped again.  after a few minutes, i was able to get back in, nothing in the cart.  very quickly (or too quickly if you prefer) i had gone through the search page, got zombie in there, then again for shadowgrounds.  when i went to click the bundle, i apparently mis-clicked in my haste and put the complete package instead and didn't notice it until i had sped through the rest of the screens.  i actually saw it as i clicked through 'accept' even as my drowsy mind saw the total and thought, 'wait, it's supposed to be ~10 or 11 bucks, top, not almost 35?!' but was too late to do anything about it.

so, now i am the unwitting owner of a bunch of games i have either a) never heard of, b) never intended to play, and c) have such a backlog already that they will probably sit in my uninstalled steam games list until the end of time.

are any of these worth playing, or did i just end up with the most expensive way to buy shadowgrounds survivor?

Shadowgrounds, Gumboy - Crazy Adventures™, RIP - Trilogy™, Vigil: Blood Bitterness™, Alpha Prime, Shadowgrounds Survivor, Space Trader: Merchant Marine, Pacific Storm, Pacific Storm Allies, Penguins Arena: Sedna's World, Obulis, Larva Mortus, Chains, Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals, Crash Time 2, Tank Universal

looking at some of those, the pacific storm games seem interesting, although not necessilarly my cup of tea (and already in a category where i have battle stations pacific), crash time looks great, but is an unknown, and a few are puzzle games that should be worth a try.  the rest are all ?? though.
6763  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Your Game of the Decade 2000-2009 on: January 04, 2010, 07:13:27 PM
GTA 3 would have to be mine, as of all the greats, few spawned and defined a genre as well as this one has.  RB/GH do it for music, but no other companies have seen much success with their attempts.  GTA is the template that all sandbox games start from.  It influences games outside it's genre; SSX 3, Tony hawk's proving ground, burnout paradise, just by the proof that 'yes, it can be done'.  Many SB games are just as good as 3 was, and some are better; some are on this list aready.

It also made a huge impact socially and brought to life that not gamers were more than just teenagers.
6764  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]Darwinia is coming on: January 04, 2010, 06:13:47 PM
I might, as long as they don't price it too high.

I hope this means that their other games are coming eventually.

6766  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games Finished in 2010- Console and PC on: January 01, 2010, 09:00:50 PM
Reserved for future

Finished
Dark Void - got the 1k on it too.  great B game in execution and story.  very under-rated imo, but it does have it's warts
Saboteur - 1k on this one too.  sad that this is both Pandemic's last and best game.  as if one needed another reason to hate EA.
ME2 - despite what it lacks, it makes up for it with all the new stuff it does and how well it does it.  more proof that bioware rocks
BF BC2 - loved the sp campaign and the mp too.
SC Conviction - good stealth action game, if nothing too much like the other SC games.
Just Cause 2 - really loved the destruction.
Red Dead Redemption - my personal goty
Terminator Salvation - admittedly, an easy 1k and not worth playing beyond that point
Sacred 2 - after a year of time off, i went back to beat the main quest.  pretty addictive at times
Winterbottom - decent take on the time-twist puzzler
Transformers WFC - enjoyed this despite some rough spots in the campaign
Crackdown 2 - the grooves wore of of this tired retread.
Mafia 2 - not up to the standards of the first but enjoyable while it lasted
Darkstar 1 - 1k'ed it, more due to stubbornness than real enjoyment
TC HAWX 2 - not as good as the first.
Brothers in Arms: HH
Halo Reach - finished twice
Medal of Honor - not my favorite sp experience, but decent enough.
Enslaved - played half of it, stalled, came back and finished it.
Force Unleashed 2 - half baked sequel with too much flash and not enough substance
Turtles in time - nice enough for a distraction and a good view on how much has changed.
Call of Duty: BlOps - short and decent sp campaign.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.  awesome all the way through and worthy of the end of year praise

still to be won:
FONV - not likely to finish but i'll have a good time while it lasts
Scott Pilgrim - damn last boss with his weak attacks
Divinity 2 - much harder to hold my attention now that the pc version has been improved.

Shelved:
AVP - motion sickness is rare for me in games, but this one had me up for hours after i played it.
Bioshock 2 - the sequel no one wanted when it was announced gets to prove how wrong it was to count it out.
Stalker: Call of Pripyat - finally, the vision of stalker we were always promised, 5 years after we all drooled over the previews.
Fable 3 - not impressed with the new direction.
Dead Rising 2 - despite how much i should like this game, it doesn't hold my interest.
6767  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Another year, another 10,000 Gamerscore on: January 01, 2010, 09:17:04 AM
i also bumped my score by another 1k since the last post.  finishing up asscreed 2 and getting a handful of different games put me over the top.  i just need to get the box hooked up to get it online.
6768  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Hankering for a western so its back to Juarez for me on: December 31, 2009, 07:34:34 PM
i'd recommend coj 2.  i liked that one quite a bit, the gun fights were very satisfying and it looks great too.  the story is not pitch perfect, but still enjoyable and you get two different play styles like in the first, but both are fun, likable characters.
6769  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Two Worlds: The Temptation now Two Worlds 2 on: December 31, 2009, 07:30:15 PM
i still have the copy i bought when it first came out but i haven't yet tried it on x64 win7.  got about a third of the way through the map before wandering off into some other game.  it did have a great atmosphere and fun combat, despite its idiosyncrasies.

the sequel is on my short B list.
6770  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: The Steam Holiday sale is live! Daily deals too! on: December 31, 2009, 05:42:27 AM
that civ 4 bundle is looking enticing.  this whole sale is making me regret buying them on d2d.  could have saved a bunch of money on about half the stuff i have bought.
6771  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Saboteur on: December 30, 2009, 03:09:42 PM
I think the only one this works for is the car collections.  I know the rdx upgrade for blowing ip 3 tanks does not as I had already destroyed one of those wulf tanks beforehand.
6772  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Annual Christmas Loot Thread on: December 28, 2009, 06:04:58 PM
not much loot from the family;

JJ's Star Trek on Blu-ray
Transformers 2 on Blu-ray
a couple of puzzles to work on
some stuff for the grill
a couple of sweaters
a gift card to a nice seafood joint
i did get myself a couple of games during the sales.

really, this year more than most was about the kids.  we got our daughter a great castle playroom and some stuff to outfit it with and the usual assortment of kids movies and toys.  my dad got my son a pretty cool 2-year old proof train set that he seems intent on 'stress testing'.

the nicest thing was having both parents and my sister together for xmas.  it's been longer than i can remember that it's always been separate parties, and my sister has only recently begun talking to any of us.  tbh, that's all i could hope for as i always figured the next time my sister saw our dad would be at his funeral.

Got all the Level 2 perks like Ceekay, with some gold sprinkled in. The terror sniper rifle is absolutely god like, and while difficult to achieve, the Lvl 3 perks really do give you tangible rewards (not passive junk like most games). The game has stayed fun, although playing it in chucks is a must, as there are times where you need contraband to move forward, and running around the city to blow up Nazi installations can get annoying.

I kinda cheeses it and bought the 'Luck o' the Irish' from the black market to unlock a level 3 perk.  the one I bought one was the one that gave you the terror sniper rifle, but it seems a bit hard to control for now (the rate of fire is insane) so I re-loaded to get my money back..  what I want to know is about Skylars mission to the cemetary:

Spoiler for Hiden:
what's in the box?!?  OK, I don't really want to know until I'm done with the game and hopefully they tell you, but I needed to make the Se7en reference.

according to the stuff i have read, the best silver and gold perks to buy are the car collection ones from the mechanic list.  both are a huge pita as all of the nazi vehicles apparently are not on the streets until later in the game, plus it's a bitch staying alive on the higher alert levels where those vehicles appear.  i've been able to get 5 of them so far, but those armored ones are tough to steal.

hint for the sniper gold perk.  where do you commonly see two nazis standing still side by side, almost inviting you to line up their heads in a row?

and for the 5 generals perk, note that the pistols all have very good range and are perfectly accurate.  don't forget, nazis, like some dogs i hear, can't look up unless you get their attention first.

i had a damn fine run last night, getting a great spot on a AAA gun which was shielded from ground fire but still had a good view of some streets, so i was able to get three perks done without much fuss, even though i was only going for 1.  '20 kills with one vehicle' just took time and patience, but i got the 'terror squad' done, plus the '5 with one blast' on the same kill.

i really love how you can clear out an area of occupation in small doses, so you can take out a whole base on one side and return later for an easier approach.
6775  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekly Playlist - Year End Holiday Loot Special Edition - 12/25 on: December 28, 2009, 05:34:20 PM
picked up saboteur last week when it was on sale and i am wading through the buckets of spilled nazi blood running down paris' streets.  it's sad that this was their last game as they finally hit the mix of action, stealth and open world atmosphere that they have been crafting since the first mercs game.

other than that, i still plug away at loz: trainz, despite my growing annoyance with the train and flute playing aspects so i can call it finished (damnit, i don't want to practice the damn tune 50 times just to open up the next section of game world)

i've also got a number of new games from the downloadable pc sites sales blitz going on.
6776  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (12/28) on: December 28, 2009, 05:24:36 PM
div 2, once it hits the cheaper shelf.  my plate of current games is too full to pick up any rpg's right now, despite how much fun i had with the first one.  and i got that one quite late into it's life as well, so i might as well keep the tradition going.

i will be looking at the games d2d is offering and deciding which one to use the $5 credit i have on it.

IN!

actually, assault on dark Athena always included EfBB.  It's the one with updated graphics.  It was 5 bucks back during the D2D sale, but the steam price is still the best you could find outside of a late clearance deal.

Does the steam versions of the stalker games allow mods?  I haven't been able to retrieve my old account; does anyone know if you can merge accounts if I do get my old one back?  The email I used way back is dead, my first purchase was hl2 on steam so I don't have the serial key and I haven't been able to guess what my account name was.

wow man, that's a tough situation.

pull her myspace, facebook, twitter page or whatever social site she's on and see if she's posted.  go to the cell phone provider and have them check call logs/gps coords.  call onstar if she has a vehicle equipped with it.

tell them to remain calm (i know, but a full blown panic will not make this easier) and have faith that she'll come home on her own.
6779  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Alien Breed coming to XBLA! on: December 23, 2009, 01:18:42 AM
yeah, i wouldn't blindly recommend a purchase as what you see in the demo is what you get.  the levels are longer, but the gameplay doesn't get much deeper than 'shoot the aliens, search for ammo, hit the button'  2 player on harder difficulty might be fun, but i haven't been able to try it yet.

small note that AYIM has some heavy graphical corruption on win7 x64 with no word on a fix.  it renders the screen either completely invisible or leaves out large chunks of the texture work in lieu of a white graphic.  i had the luck to try a few levels only before it got too borked to continue.

i didn't last long enough to see the third disc, so i can't imagine the direction it took in the fourth.  i had higher hopes for it than i did for vii, but that's due to my getting a ps1 just to play vii after it released and was reviewed so highly.

true, and i love that they do that, but in the end, i'm not losing out on points as long as they keep releasing something worth buying.  i'm just banking them.  when i get a deal on them, i feel the trade off is worth it.

now, even if they had done this for wii, i wouldn't have done the same thing as i had little dedicated interest in playing straight ports of old console games.

amazon is pretty good with sales too, although i haven't got any that way yet.

This statement being said about a capcom game?  No way!   icon_lol

I quit very early on where I discovered they made every attempt to make the game a chore to play.  Fun for the first ten minutes of killing zombies, then the gun battle, then the assault vehicle & convicts, then out of my machine and back on my shelf.

+1 to all of this.  i made it to the second fight with that a--clown and said to hell with it.  with that and the horrible ai of the other survivors, it was a pita to play.  i was able to get three of them grouped together for a run back to safety, outfitted all of them with sledgehammers and got all of us to the door to the outside.  zone in, one of them stayed inside and went down pretty quickly.  then i tried to take the other two through the park area with those G-Damned convicts and lost one to them and the other to zed, despite having outfitted pretty well.  i tried to wait until morning so the jeep wouldn't show up and they died anyways.  it was like the game was saying "you are screwed either way, so we are going to make it so you won't even bother."

the damn boss battles and the convicts also used the classic cheat.  i can kill a zombie with a plate, but i can't kill three unarmored humans with a shotgun blast to the face or a burst from an uzi, nevermind the bosses who soak up bullets like wolverine.

rant over, but my most anticipated game is either mafia 2 or red dead redemption.  both are in my genre of choice, and i always love getting into a new open world and exploring it.

i think i must be the only one who likes the points system, especially for how they abstract the value of them.  if they simply said $20 like the psn and wii cards, you wouldn't see near as many sales on them, imho.  at least none that i've ever seen.  as it is now, once a year target and toysrus either drop the price, give you a gift card, or make them eligible for 2for1 deals.  if the damn tru site had let me order it, i would have been able to grab 4800 points for $40.  that would have dropped the purchase price of anything i got with it by a third.  instant sale price.

i've actually bought more DL games this year than any year before.  sometimes, it's the sale priced offerings on psn like flower and prince of persia, and sometimes it's the anticipated game of the moment like shadow complex, splosion man, shooter, and alien breed.  hell, i still haven't played the last guy, even though it's been over a year since i bought it.  i'd have to check my catalog for what i bought this year, but as long as the game looks like fun, i'll give it a chance.

the biggest change though is this; i used to have the xbox set to download every trial game automatically.  now, i don't bother unless the game looks good.

i should add that in the three-ish years i had the wii, i never bought anything off the wii store.  a few reasons for that, despite all the good stuff available.  i bought a 360 6 months after the wii and stopped playing any wii games except big titles.  most of the games early on were either ones i had played or those i had no interest in, and all were quite expensive to boot.
6794  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Alien Breed coming to XBLA! on: December 17, 2009, 06:22:33 PM
i downloaded this and unlocked it once the trial was over.  i was impressed by how well it controls and it feels like a top down version of shadow complex in some respects.  very responsive so far and i've gotten adjusted to using the bumpers for camera control.  first full level (of 5) took me about 50 minutes, and i was searching every side room for loot.  level was pretty linear, with a number of backtracking (not more than a few rooms away though) and had you mainly working to shut off the reactor.  everything in this level looked like you'd expect an engineering area to look.  second level is on medical, and there are more lighted rooms, lots of medical equipment, etc.  there are a number of items i've found, two grenade types, med kits which take more than a second to apply and gun turrets.  so far, i've seen 4 weapons, with the shotgun being my favorite.  it takes down a drone in one hit up close.

on the downside, it highlights the biggest downside so far.  the aliens are pretty stupid and seem to have two states:  static guard or head-on run at you.  if you time it right, you can take down multiple enemies two feet away with the shotgun.  also, the scripted elements are pretty easy to anticipate after the first half hour or so.  there are not a randoms roaming around so after a while, the tension you felt at first fades out a bit.

the other drawback is how easy it is to game the spawns.  most of the time, they all occur in one room, so you can back up into the last room and wait for the doors to open.  i'd have preferred it had there been more of an alien presence already roaming around that reacted to gunfire and came to attack you.  i hate to say it, but towards the end of the first level, i felt more like the orkin man than a survivor.  i hope the difficulty on epic is more to my liking as the middle difficulty level isn't much of a challenge so far, or that the game introduces some smarter enemies later on.

still, i like what i see so far, and even though it won't be the goty material i hoped for, still fun.  i would love to get a co-op run through epic as well.

i picked this up last night due to the sale and put in just enough time to get the spirit train and sent off to the first part of the map.  so far, the presentation and style are what's making this game enjoyable.  i wonder if i'll end up liking the ship in PH more though, as the train is obviously limited in movement.  looking to put more time into it.

gah!  February 2nd!  I was hoping for a late February release due to Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2 and possibly Star Trek Online....

yeah, that means this will likely see a small delay until i get it, failing any deals early on.

i've loaded up the first two with mods to get a romp around the zone until then.

end of 2006: 9730
end of 2007: 13395 (+3665)
end of 2008: 17940 (+4545)
end of 2009: 22275 (+4335)

When did the 360 launch? November 2005?

I had my first kid May 2006, my gamerscore has suffered ever since.

How are you figuring out your score at the end of each year? I just happened to write my down last year.

not sure about the rest, but i'm just going off of what i remember last year, which was wrapping up gow2's campaign to break 20k not long before new years.

great thread idea.  i'll have to go back to the list and see what i've accumulated.  i too have had a habit of shooting for over 10,000 points per year and i've actually done it in less than the three years i've had the system so my x0,000 moment happens around the end of the year.
