I fell in love with Galaxy on Fire over Thanksgiving. Totally old schoolnspace trading/fighting sim. Takes about an hour to open up the galaxy. The galaxy is freaking huge too. Repetitive to be sure but so were these games back in the day. Lots of fun and free at the moment.

Galaxy on Fire 2 is so much better in so many ways.  I liked the first one, but the second one is really fantastic.

picked up both today and i agree, even on a lowly 3g iphone where the lack of power stands out more.  the game just feels more fleshed out and less like a 1st gen gameloft rip-off.

There was fun to be had in Prototype, but I liked Infamous more. I don't remember it too well, but what stuck with me was the repetitive nature of side missions. Flying was fun, and stealing tanks (and mowing down pedestrians  ninja) and helicopters added to the firepower factor. They definitely have an opportunity to improve some of the issues in the sequel, but we'll see if they go the way of Assassin's Creed or The Force Unleashed.

mowing down pedestrians was fun, but towards the end it just got a little too dynasty warriors-ish with the standard grunts.  and going through crowds of civvies or infected just felt like a reason to show off the designers "really wicked blood splatter effects".  side missions were pretty bad though.  way too stingy with the time limits and not a lot of variety.
6764  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: AC: Brotherhood - impressions and full review! on: December 06, 2010, 04:55:10 AM
what about the whole "russia during the revolution" theme they went with in the comic?  i do think with everything they've pointed to during the subject 16 stuff that a founding fathers as templars would be next in line.  it would be pretty kick ass too as you would still want to use the old ways rather than rely on firearms.  it's not like the hand cannon is all that useful anyways.

i wouldn't mind the russian angle though, especially during the winter months.  could make for some very interesting chases.

FYI, the entire first season of Star Blazers is available to buy on Amazon VOD for around $6.  Last time I looked, the actual DVD set was over $100.

Yup, its one pricey series - new copies of the 1st season sell for $130 at the cheapest retailer in my area. As much as I like it, I don't think it's the best series for it's genre. When you can get Crest of the Stars, it's Banner of the Stars sequels, Planetes or Nadesico for less than $50 at most stores in my area, I can't say I recommend it often to friends.
I'm not sure if Amazon.ca has VOD, but I'm going to check into it.
yeah, a wee bit expensive.

just for reference, here's the link for the VOD

now that i have a bd player that supports amazon vod, this kicks ass.

i played a bunch of Overtime! yesterday, followed up by Sick Child Tycoon and today, it's the more of that with the new Sibling Expansion.

if i do get a chance to play on the old console or the pc, it will either be one of the random puzzle games i now have from the steam sale or more ACB.

i also never finished it due to the stupid aircraft carrier fight.  fast boss + super block + overpowered attacks was bad enough to start with.  add in a timed fight and you get ragequit.

i suppose now that i am ps3-less i have to at least give it a look now.  (i much more preferred infamous over prototype).

6773  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Bank gave my Mom counterfit money on: December 05, 2010, 05:25:53 AM
it's hard to side with the bank when it's fighting elderly, so i would go to the media if you get the run-around.  i hate to go that route, but as the bank has very little to trust you on, they upper management will be hesitant to believe you without some form of proof.  even with a good video of her and knowing who the teller was, they will be suspicious of her story, and yours too for that matter.  tbh, they have no reason to trust you vs anyone else who would claim the same thing as i wouldn't put it past a shady person to involve family in such a way.  that doesn't give them the instant out though, and it might be better for their image to take the fake and just play nice.  now, if they have had more than one incident involving the same teller, they will be more likely to believe her and will treat this as an internal problem.

one thing that shouldn't trouble you is the receipt though.  if she knows about when she went, they will have the record of that transaction and who handled it.

good luck and don't give up.

I bought it but iam a sucker for puzzle type games, as my steam list would attest to. So far , it's pretty much like the demo with more challenging puzzles. It let's you pick from a few different ones at a time, so you aren't locked in if you get stuck. Overly cute but you could just blast metal while you play.

hard to pass up the air pack but i already have two of the 5 and the other 3 are not exactly screaming buy to me.

ended up with this:

Indie Puzzle Pack - $5
Indie Pulse Pack - $5
Indie Clever Pack - $5
Indie Story Pack - $5
Left 4 Dead 2 - 6-Pack - $25
Indie Energy Pack - $5
Alpha Protocol - $7.50

so 57.50 for 26 (minus 5 i already had on steam or elsewhere) games plus 6 gifts.

not bad and nothing compared to last year's xmas sale.  i expect that to be murderous on my wallet.

totally agree with crackdown 2 and fable 3 to a lesser extent.  had high hopes for the former and was willing to give the whole "good to be the king" game a chance.  instead, rehashed sequel and a game where less somehow equals more.  put simply, i have fable 3 on loan with the chance to get it basically half off and i can't force myself to pull the trigger on it.

moh wasn't bad, but it definitely didn't hold my attention, sp or mp wise.  it's also my biggest purchase regret of the year.

best solution?  release the docs for free.  it worked for the hd dvd/blu ray encryption key.  once it's gone viral, it's too late to sue out of existence.

plus, the act of seeding the docs via the same torrent sites used to seed the files would be perfectly fitting.
