sounds interesting and i will want to see how this water effect they have modeled works out.  real water effects would be pretty damn sweet in a game as i don't think any game has really pulled it off before.
6642  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: EDGE's 50 Best iPhone/iPod Touch Games List on: October 11, 2009, 05:31:59 AM
my personal best wth flight control is 52, but i don't play it as much as i do harbor master.  for one, since i have bought it, they've added in like 3 new ports, with not just another layout, but different takes. (specific colors to specific ports, mixed color cargo ships, pirate attacks you repel with a cannon, sea monster attacks you tap to defeat).  out of all of the games i have (32 paid, umpteen free during sale) it gets updated the most.

my list so far:

traffic management
1) Harbor master - .99 + Lite
2) Flight Control

Dual stick shooters
1)  Isotope - 1.99 + Lite.  Geo wars graphic style, many ships with various weapons.  lots of upgrades and many missions.  Most played game of all i have
2) Alive4Ever - 1.99 + Lite.  take left 4 dead, make it a top down shooter with upgrades and different objectives.  fun, but imo, it burns out fast.
3) Minigore .99.  great style, but short on options.  very much a basic entry in the genre.

Shooter
1)  Space Invaders Infinity Gene 4.99.  has the potential for unlimited levels via music mode.  (it generates new levels from your music)  in actuality, these levels aren't all that different, but it's still pretty fun.
2) Dropship - free.  side scrolling gravity based shooter/rescue ship.

Tower Defense
1) Defender Chronicles - Side view tower defense with character levels, weapons and upgrades.  recently upgraded to add more levels in story mode.  note, i cannot seem to pull this one up in the app store.

misc puzzle
Stone Loops of Jurassica. .99 + Lite.   it's a zuma clone with a ton of levels in two modes.  great value

Ynth 1.99 + Lite.  - unique take on a block puzzle with you as a lady bug trying to cross a pit of quicksand in various chaped blocks.
Radial 50 1.99 + Lite.  360 degree break-in.

i haven't tried it yet, but seeing as it's free, it deserves a plug here for everybody.  car jack streets is a top down gta clone and looks pretty cool, very reminiscent of the first two gta's
6643  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: the bloody Red Baron will be flying once more! (like at GOG) on: October 11, 2009, 04:40:49 AM
too bad they couldn't get their hands on wings of glory too.  it was campy as all hell, but it was pretty fun and the graphics were great for its time.
6644  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What was the last good game manual? on: October 11, 2009, 04:37:05 AM
the manual for red baron was so in depth that i actually used it as the starting point for a history class report on wwi.  it had huge bits of interesting trivia in it.

recently, i would have a hard time thinking of any actual manual that wasn't just a 'EA special' (8 pages with 5 of them dedicated to credits and warnings)

ARMA 2 wasn't too bad, but it would have been considered light by old standards.

not sure which one i'm thinking of, but one of the squad shooters (rainbow 6) had a lot of useful stuff on room clearing procedures that you wouldn't expect to get in a game.
6645  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 10/09 on: October 09, 2009, 09:40:41 PM
finishing up with chronicles of riddick:  assault on dark athena on the 360 after enjoying my 3rd playthrough of EFBB.  i might also give my militaristic side a kick with ArmA 2 just to see if it will fill the gap from not having ofp2 to play.

6647  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Beneath a Steel Sky - Remastered on iPhone on: October 08, 2009, 06:01:01 PM
game is up on the app store now at $5.  i haven't taken the plunge yet, but with a few more reviews, i'll probably go in and check it out soon.  the new work by gibbons looks great and the original stuff doesn't look too bad either.  very much an old school look, but updated with a higher res, as far as i can tell.
6648  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Nice shirts, just don't wear these to the bathroom on: October 08, 2009, 05:14:29 PM
in the same vein as the zombie shirt rigged up a while back, someone's designed real 'working' portal shirts.

pretty cool, but it's expensive.  i could totally see buying this with a co-worker for halloween or something, but i wonder how durable it could be.
6649  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Target Update on: October 08, 2009, 04:25:44 PM
no copies of crysis at either store i have checked.  one copy of lotr: moria and two copies of coh: tales of valor (had it, but changed my mind at the last moment) and a copy of both endwar and hawx.  not a whole lot on the 360 worth mentioning, mostly terminator salvation and gi joe, both 24.

i did snag the last copy of cryostasis and a 3 pack with scratches and penumbra overture as those have sounded somewhat interesting recently.

i forgot about that.  thanks.  then it's definitely a go for borderlands later, uncharted 2 (assuming the bastages have it in stock this time) and maybe ofp2
6651  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Toys R Us B2G1 sale 10/11 - 10/17 on: October 08, 2009, 04:52:23 AM
yeah, it's a great time to do a deal there.  not sure i want the same games you do though, so i have to see what's interesting.

i really wish this deal was about a month or so away instead of next week.
6652  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Target Update on: October 06, 2009, 11:22:08 PM
i'm going to drop by one today on my way home.  i'll get one if i see one for you.
6653  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on: October 06, 2009, 05:36:20 PM
yeah, you didn't miss a thing with cod3.  treyarch's initial foray into a full game fell on it's ass, which makes it pretty surprising considering how much better cod w@w was.

what gets me about the delay is this, it's supposedly due to piracy issues, as they are probably trying to make it that much harder for them to play it, but in the end, all it does it delay the start of cracking season by two weeks as you know they'll get it eventually.  so, why bother making it much harder than usual if all it does it delay them by a week?
6654  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: If you thought your GOD prices were silly on: October 06, 2009, 05:22:11 PM
this would be troublesome for the resell market if all you had to do was buy the game, download it digitally, then sell off your physical copy.  i'm not sure the game companies would be ok with that as it would remove one of the biggest barriers from the resale market.  hell, if that was the case with everything so far, my game shelf would be about half of what it is now and anything i ever anticipated playing would be installed already.  and you would have to figure out some way to force uninstallation, but i don't see how.  it's like a pc game with no drm; once it's installed, you can't enforce the disc in the drive if you never designed it that way from the beginning.  it's the same way with the current 360's method of downloading to the hd.  their copy protection is the disc.  perhaps randomly wanting to 'insert disk' to play when using the digital copy would do it, but then it also negates the backup solution.

this is slightly different than the current blu ray + digital copy as the digital copy isn't nearly as high quality as the disc (obviously) but with a game, it would be 1:1.

now, if digital copies were priced comparably and the console titles went on sale as the pc market often does, then at least there would be some parity between the prices.  xbla and psn have at least taken this step on occasion and both reduced prices permanently or during their deal of the week.  but afaik, neither have taken this into account for most of their full retail games (sole exception being warhawk)

kotaku did a quick check of the top 10 psp games, comparing best 'like new' copy against the psn price and in all cases except one, it was much cheaper to get the physical copy, and that's only due to the one being a limited print niche game (disgaea) where price was affected by market commodities and demand.  i would believe that this is the case for any download vs physical copy comparison.  download is higher, usually due to the seller's perceived notion of 'convenience', at least on console anyways (sale prices notwithstanding).
6655  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Operation Flashpoint:Dragon Rising..anyone in? on: October 06, 2009, 04:51:36 PM
i grabbed the latest patch after i bought it and never had any crashes or anything.  mostly, it just took some tweaking to get a playable fps without making it look like opflash 1.  my biggest problem though was due to a failing wireless keyboard.

gutted about them taking out the rain

Didn't Ben Folds Five record that?  slywink

I think the best commentary I heard about this game was a preview on Gamespot. He notes that OFDR doesn't have all the weapons, the options or the bells and whistles of ARMA II. On the other hand, he notes, OFDR actually will run smoothly on a PC and isn't bug ridden. Also it's more fun to play than ARMA II.

Again, this interview give me hope that it's a game for people like me who aren't twitch shooters and don't mind spending some time to learn how to play the game effectively.

so this could be seen as a slightly trimmed down version of ARMA II?  i didn't think it was going to be developed as a leaner alternative, but as a total alternate to the bis developed games.  interesting.  in any case, i hope the 360 version is enjoyable as my limited run with ARMA II wasn't everything i hoped it would be.  i think i need to give it another shake though and see if it has legs.

hoping i can get opflash 2 via gamefly, but that's a pretty slim chance as i inadvertently kept one of my rentals late thinking opflash was next week.  doh!

in any case, i want to hear how it fairs on the console anyways as ArmA 2 didn't get me addicted like i was hoping it would.
6660  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So what's gonna rock your tober? on: October 05, 2009, 04:27:06 PM
borderlands and possibly op flash 2

now, with tru and the b2g1 deal, i'll be holding out for borderlands and uncharted 2 with a possible on brutal and ofp2.  alpha would be a contender too, but i don't think it's going to come out this year.  call it a hunch

6663  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Risen:Could it be a surprise hit? on: October 02, 2009, 07:58:22 PM
ugh, that is bad.  with the way that oblivion and fallout 3 looked, even two worlds for that matter, i can't believe how ugly that screen looks on console.  they hacked most of the detail right out of it.  maybe they can salvage it in the next few months they've delayed, but damn, i think i'll just wait to grab the pc version.
6664  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Add me to the list of people that got laid off... on: October 01, 2009, 06:55:01 PM
that sucks, man.  i was also lucky enough to get a job a few weeks after i got laid off back in feb.  sadly, it's a contract position with a group with a very shaky budget.  i've been working my 'last month' here since july.  now it looks like going through november will be a 50/50 shot with much narrower odds through november.

luckily, they don't stop you from double dipping up here in wa.  too bad you don't get squat on ue though.  but between that, my vacation and severance, i actually made more during those 4 weeks than i did in the previous months.  and the old job has called me so much on a per hour basis, i've made over a grand off of them since then.

not a bad year in all, except for the massive hit to my health insurance, sick leave, vacation, etc.

best of luck to you.  even the health care industry is getting hit now.  wife's hospital is talking layoffs and reduced staffing.

what a F upped waste of web design.  hey you clowns, can't you even get the damn cookies working so we don't have to grind just to get a damn forum login?

and just like that, it worked.  i guess the web gods finally smiled on me.  i figured it was different when the login screen rejected my alias as taken.  the confirmation email was waiting in my inbox.

i was hit the the 2nd info request, filled it out and then said 'provide later' at the beta stage.  so far, it's working.

you can also try to sign up for the beta after you make your account.  hit no at first then login and change it to yes.
6667  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So I have this backlog of games... on: September 30, 2009, 04:43:20 PM
i'm the same boat but i actually pressed myself into clearing out some of the backlog and managed to finish both far cry 2 and saints row 2 recently, and that's after 50 or more hours combined.  i'll never get through my backlog either though, as the next few months are going to be taken over by each month's big game, up until mw2's mp buzz wears off mid february.

nevermind my pc backlog which just got set back a bunch with d2d's eevil sale.

6669  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The Cleveland Show on: September 28, 2009, 04:30:52 PM
it was bad.  i really hope they didn't intend for this to be a stand in for either of his other shows.  none of the jokes shown in the previews (kid under table, mr bear) where the least bit better when seen in the whole episode, or at least as much of it as i could stomach.

the only 'funny' part was due to the regular characters; cleveland's rants about peter's previous exploits and stewie's parting question, 'this guy gets a show?'  aptly put.

at least american dad improved enough that i now actually like it now and again.  there wasn't a single character or bit in this that even approached a bad family guy episode.
6670  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Revisiting Titan Quest and Immortal Throne on: September 25, 2009, 10:38:15 PM
i had a pretty good build up until the harder difficulties.  ranger/assassin class with poison and bleed attacks bumped up using a damn nice longbow.  anything that wasn't undead died before they even got in melee range.  i had to kite those guys, but it was doable.  nothing like counting the line of bodies from my feet to the edge of the screen.

best way to play it before you lock yourself in to a class(es) is to play it straight up until you hit level 10 or so (basically, high enough to get access to dual class) without picking any class.  it's harder, sure, but then you can backup your save and then get a good trial for pretty much every primary class (and most dual classes) without wasting points in something you end up regretting.  iirc, there might have been a mod which let you do this.

6672  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo: ODST Impressions? on: September 23, 2009, 04:41:58 PM
played through about 4 of the flashback sections and i like that the stuff you pick up also unlocks stuff for you as you go.  much nicer tooling around the city after that happens the second time.  you can ignore many of the little firefights that way as you can get across a zone to the gate before they can gang up on you.

playing on normal, but i would love to get through a whole game on legendary through co-op like i did with halo 3.  could be a lot more fun that way.

aside from the loner sections as the rookie, i still feel like the mc most of the time.  you aren't overly limited due to the health as long as you can retreat back and let your 'shields' regen and you aren't restricted from carrying around those huge mounted guns like you did in halo 3.  as noted before, the visor is pretty much required during the rookie sections, but off during many of the flashback scenes.

so far, the flashbacks have played like a 'greatest moments' collection from the previous games.  good small squad battles, large, open area vehicle combat, dense urban tank combat, dogfighting against wraiths in a cavernous facility.  tbh, if they don't cap this off with a battle against a scarab or two, i'll be disappointed.

so far, it's a great side story experience and reminds me of what i liked about halo to begin with.

surprised that TRU had so many copies in stock when i went down there and glad they did.  not surprised that they ran out of the figure about 10 minutes after opening, but it's no big thing.  i won't be able to post any impressions until tomorrow as i still have this whole 'work' thing going on.
6675  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: M&L Bowser's Inside Story impressions on: September 21, 2009, 07:52:06 PM
looks like this one is falling off the radar for most people.  i've put in more time with it and really, the only issue i have with it is how specific the timing is on defense.  one boss i am currently stuck on gets about 5 chances per round to attack you, and i've been unable to get through a round without taking any damage.  what makes it worse is this one is a multi stage boss, so you really only do damage in the second stage, so if you get all banged up, you end up using all of your turns to heal or revive instead of attacking.  i may need to retreat and grind for a bit, which is annoying as the enemies don't respawn until you leave the level. (usually, a good thing.  not so when you want to grind)

still, i have enjoyed everything so far.  best handheld rpg i've played in a while
6676  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / M&L Bowser's Inside Story impressions on: September 16, 2009, 04:44:37 PM
anybody else picked this one up yet?  i went in hoping to snag a copy of scribblenauts at TRU ($15 GC) and it hadn't arrived.  i was on the fence about this one until i read a pretty favorable review, but the clerk had a deal with it and bumped the gc to 15 as well.

played about two hours so far and it reminds me of the previous mario rpg's in many ways, which is not a bad thing as 1000 year door was pretty damn awesome and paper mario was fun in it's own right as well.  it's an action rpg melded with a turn based rpg, so you have to do more than just select attack and sit back.  defense is also handled this way and you can either avoid an attack altogether or even get a counterattack.

graphics are pretty slick for a ds game, which is unsurprising considering it's a first party title as is the rest of the presentation.  even the voice work is well done, what little of it you get.  the writing quality is also well done and pokes fun at the series and pop culture.

you can swap control between M&L and bowser at any time once the story picks up, and what one does in their realm affects the other, like powering up bowser's muscles to lift heavy objects or drinking water to allow the bros to swim around the level.  one boss fight involved both groups, which was pretty cool.

i've played far enough in to see there's going to be some backtracking as you get powers which open up new areas in both realms, but they have made it fairly quick to get around.  not sure how long the overall game is, but it apparently has a lot more to do than just the main quest as there's item collection and challenge areas to fight in.

this pretty much came out of nowhere for me as i haven't really played many ds games lately and don't follow much that isn't mentioned here.  this is pretty fun so far and is a great portable alternative to the lite iphone games i have been playing mobile

6680  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What is is true of you, re: video game addiction? on: September 09, 2009, 05:14:49 AM
i get addicted to a game as long as it usually takes for me to finish it, like with batman, rfg, ghostbusters, puzzle crack, prof lyton, picross, or those that i rack up so many hours that i feel like i've got my money's worth out of before i finish it. fo3, far cry 2, oblivion.  i rarely finish the second group in fact as it's rare that i go back to them after a long hiatus.  i try to get as many games on sale/clearance and sell or trade them once i finish if i feel burnt out on them and have no desire to revisit them.  the lower prices we've seen lately means my collection is full of stuff i've put in less than 5 hours worth.  you can see those ones in my game history as they all have less than 250 points.

i try to play as many things as look interesting as i know once the game has aged a bit, i will not likely play it at all.

i should break down and just sell the bulk of em, but i'm reluctant to part with them just yet.
