was mercs on the pc a good port or did it get ported by the B team?  i would hope for a mod scene, but my hunches say no.

yeah, it will have some stiff competition with bioshock 2 hitting just before, and if splinter cell isn't a train wreck either.

i also think this won't be given the ad dollars to make a noticeable impression on people not familiar with the series, so in other words, 80% of the ps3 game buying public.
6603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's that time again! What's Your Game of the Year 2009 on: December 08, 2009, 06:55:52 PM
so far, i have several candidates for goty

batman: aa - just about perfect in every way.  best game based on a comic book hero
uncharted 2 - pitch perfect sp campaign through the first 90% or so, but loses ground at the end.
mw2 - sp has some great moments, even though it's a bit derivative of the first.  mp is top of it's class
infamous - like this one far more than i did prototype due to the latter's insistence on lame-ass timed super blocking boss battle

unplayed contenders
dragon age - could be great, but i have only got a few hours in.

honorable mentions
borderlands - great all around, but not quite goty material imho.
ghostbusters - while it's the perfect example of how to do a movie franchise game right, it doesn't push into the top honors.
red faction guerrilla - most fun i've had all year.

(I'm not sure if DLC is included in the category or not)

good call.  i had forgotten about TLaD.

i don't think there is, as i never tried it before i bought it.  i would have recommended it as a blind purchase a few days ago as it was just on sale for $5

i was very close to pulling the trigger on majesty 2 as well but decided it would probably just sit in my perpetual backlog.  at least with the DL services, you can have them keep the 'shelf' organized for you and not worry about misplacing it when you get the urge to try something.

really hoping we get some good stuff after mercs.
6607  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / what's your Downloadable GOTY? on: December 08, 2009, 01:38:26 AM
this year has been pretty good for xbla/psn/wii releases and i have had as much fun with some of them as i did their big brother's on disc.

shadow complex ranks as my top contender so far, but the race for goty is pretty contentious and won't be over for a few weeks.

braid, flower, bf1943, peggle, bionic commando rearmed, 'splosion man, plus we still have pixeljunk shooter and alien breed coming.

and those were just the ones i played and could remember.  (no wii, so no 1st hand experience, sorry)

so, what's your top download game of the year?
6608  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Alien Breed coming to XBLA! on: December 08, 2009, 01:24:14 AM
Alien Swarm, a UT 2k4 (and maybe ue3, unsure) mod with 4 person co-op.  if not a remake then, it pulls from the standards of the genre, dating back to what, Aliens?

either way, i would have loved to have 4 person co-op here, but 2 person will suffice.

if they can nail this, it will make the Downloadable goty list a bit longer.

Those words are direct from the mouth of Can-You-Run-It. icon_confused Unfortunately that site doesn't have a listing for Hostile Waters.

well, the requirements for it were an 8mb video card, and that seems about what i remember.  the cpu is certainly more than the minimum by a generation or two and the system ram is well above the minimum.   as for the warnings you got, those are features introduced after the game did, so you shouldn't be missing anything.  pretty sure the card i ran it on was a geforce 2.

From my experience, the WRT54G are awesome routers hindered by horrendous software.

You should put a different one in - like Tomato or DD-WRT.

+ to this, but take note of the model you have.  i know they purposely nerfed the ability to mod with some versions of the wrt.  i picked one up from a trade here and had some success with it.  sadly, it only seemed to work for about a week before it stopped providing dns resolution, so i reverted back to a different router.

i then compounded the problem by mucking about with it a while ago and got it to stop responding completely.  it's settings are screwed up and make it the most secure router in existence, aka unable to be reached by any means over the network.  i need to read up on it and refresh it's firmware.

this will be my last purchase of the year.

i had some problems the week mw2 released and thought it was either bad live service or something isp related.  turned out that my in house wiring is going TU and if i skip the router and switch setup, directly connecting to the modem, everything is great.  it's likely an issue with the switch installed that connects all the rooms in the house, but i haven't got a replacement for it yet.  that's what i am hoping for at least.

FYI, there are some fantastic apps for iPhone with that type of puzzle under the name PathPix and PathPix Pro

and likely a whole lot cheaper too.  i shall take a look.

you think that's bad?  we have an auto-patching system at work which works great for most updates.  well, the week sp2 was released, ie8 also hit the web.  its install came first and was the auto patch could not get it going due to a forced eula screen agreement, so when we ran this during our maintenance window, we expected a long delay due to sp2.  we checked the progress and found the stoppage.  had to manually go through 150 servers in less than two hours and get the installs going, then wait for them to finish so we would be assured everything came back up.  oh, that was fun.  my manager didn't leave that night until almost 1 and we still have servers without sp2 on them.

to make it worse, the install time on vista's sp2 is about half that of server 2008.

the best part:

Before setting autotuninglevel, you have to netsh, interface, tcp and then
SET HEURISTICS DISABLED

they went in through the netsh shell, conversely, this should also work:

netsh interface tcp SET HEURISTICS DISABLED

you can check this with:

netsh interface tcp SHOW HEURISTICS

then run:

set global autotuninglevel=disabled

i also consider myself lucky in that i've only had one psu die (coincidentally, also an antec in a sonata case) on an actively used machine, which i replaced with a much nicer one, which i was able to get on sale.  i must have researched every model i could find on the shelf before i did and it was then i learned about the significance of the rails and all that stuff you don't see on posted on cheaper models.  a buddy of mine who had the same case had his die and take out his os drive, a 72gb raptor.  this was back when those were easily running for more than 2 bucks a gig.  adding insult to injury, his died the night we went to a lan party.  hooked everything up and poof.

i am inferring from your description that the other servers are pingable from your clients, but not to the DC.  is this the case with both hostname and IP address?  that they can access their shares on the DC is a good thing, but odd that it doesn't connect during logon.  i would hazard a guess and say that the shares are mapped via IP?  if that's the case, you could add an entry to the clients' host file to get up and running until you can track this down.

other than that, i would like to get some more details.  are the clients static IP or DHCP?  if DHCP, what provides it?  check if it's assigning addresses correctly (release & renew).

almost grabbed all of the glyphs last night, but decided to snag all the feathers wherever i went and grabbed a map.  man, some of them are pretty much only going to get noticed one time during the game and i would have never found them without help.  there's one on the back wall of a church viewpoint location way out in the middle of nowhere in tuscany that would have either taken hours to stumble upon or would have been the last one i couldn't track down in that area.

at least i was able to get a decent system to track all of them in the big towns, even if it means i have to hit every location again.  it's better than looking at all of venice at one time and knowing that you still have half of them to get.  would almost have been better to not grab any of them at all without the map, so at least you know what you got.

Yeah, that's the thing- I also only found one clue.  I still don't know how I was supposed to figure it out.

What's funny is that I looked at the strategy guide and I think they had the same problem- most of the other glyph solutions offer up an explanation on how you could solve it in addition to the actual solution itself.  For the bunker they didn't even bother and just put the solution in and nothing else.

for others who may be stumped by it here is the way to solve the Bunker without me telling you what the code is:

Spoiler for Hiden:
apparently each straight line in a symbol is how you tell what number it corresponds to.  the < = 2, the diamond within another diamond = 8 and the square with a slash in it was 5, etc etc. if there was anything curved it didn't match with anything.

Yes but that doesn't tell you which part to line the wheel up with.

Spoiler for Hiden:
That's what confused me- You can clearly see the < in the pictures but in the others puzzles of that type there was typically another number for you to equate it to and I never could find one in that puzzle.

yeah, the damn bunker was the last one i attempted last night. i got the same hint ceekay points out but even with that in mind wasn't able to brute force the lock the way the others were.

for the most part, the glyphs were either pretty well done (picture rotation or puzzle grouping) but those damn wheels just got annoying and the hints they give you were pretty hit or miss.

i still think ezio should have finished off the spaniard, and that given how many times you could have done so earlier kind of comes off as a c--ktease when you don't actually do it.

Spoiler for Hiden:
That would have been kind of hard to finagle.  Borgia didn't die until 1503 and had the symptoms of a fever.  They could have had Ezio poison him to fit in with the historical record but that would have been kind of anti-climactic.

so three of the original main cast are there and the others are basically making cameos?  not sure how long this will last, kind of like the 70's show without foreman or kelso.

scrubs was always about the characters and their quirks and interactions.  with so many gone, i think the chemistry they had is gone as well.  if the writers can pull this off, it will be a surprise.
6631  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Assassin's Creed 2 interest? (Now with Impressions - starting on pg 2) on: December 02, 2009, 05:24:32 PM
yeah, the last two tombs were a pita, as was the third round of the ctf match you get shoved into.  there's just not enough precision to have timed sections like that with ezio not being as exact as altair was.  i have skipped all of the races except one and i probably won't bother with them as they will probably just annoy me.  i will do most of the side quest assassin/beat up missions now that i have finished the game.

i still need to track down and solve 3 glyphs and find the damn feathers (55 so far, but the rest are going to be a pita as well, i'm guessing).  and i've had a hell of a time getting the sand and sweep achievements due to always getting interrupted before i can get enough enemies affected.  i also need to climb the last few viewpoints i somehow missed the first time.

"WTF" spoiler
Spoiler for Hiden:
i picked up on the fact she was talking to desmond pretty quickly, but it was still pretty cool that they went that way.  not sure i like the new meta story element, but that's mostly due to what i already know about the whole magnetic pole switch problem they threaten you with.  i thought the last sequence was interesting and like that you get to use the same trick played on altair.  i still think ezio should have finished off the spaniard, and that given how many times you could have done so earlier kind of comes off as a c--ktease when you don't actually do it.

i also like the way they played the credits and how they ended the game this time.  it does seem pretty odd though that they hook you up in the van.  if the equipment was so easily used that way, why not just drive around and access the animus that way instead of going to the trouble of finding a location you expect to be found eventually?

i am also looking forward to the dlc as it gives them a chance to fill in the missing sequences and also hints at some pretty cool events to take part in.

personally, i would love to have some form of aircraft to fly around in, even an ultralight.  expand the setting so we get more than jungle and desert and make it so more than just the grass and trees catch fire.  hell, let the buildings burn and collapse, and stay persistent.  make the night time a dangerous time to be outside and have wildlife that can and will hunt you down.  have more than just enemies in the world and implement some form of mercenaries' disguises so you can actually drive around without being everybody's target.  or working factions at the least.  as for setting, how about eastern europe, possibly a similar state to boznia, with the threat of usa/russian involvement.  or maybe indonesia.  as for the weapons, let us mod them somehow.

oh, and dump the malaria angle.  that was interesting, but annoying.
