Unclear how involved Jon Van Caneghem was for C&C4 (came late, name not in credits). Maybe he can help right the ship (creater of HOMM, Kings Bounty...), although I don't see any RTSs on his bio either (which as discussion noted, could be good).

maybe they'll try something new and make it turned based.....

i can see it now, TB free-to-play facebook game.  or we'll get something like the xbla version of wing commander and bsg, aka "slap a well-known vehicle skin over generic top-down arena shooter and call it a day".

I don't think that's a very good comparison, except for the Morrowind and Oblivion. Skyrim's sound has clearly been compressed so much that you can no longer recognize the dynamics just by looking at the waveform.

not quite sure what you mean,as i just heard The Elder Scrolls theme same as Morrowind and Oblivion, but with a choir(which i agree was brilliant)..it's always just slightly different with each game...unless you meant another part which i didn't recognize

He means that the theme goes all the way through and doesn't stop just before the climax like Oblivion's theme did. That was always so frustrating with that game, hearing all the buildup and then having it fizzle away into nothing.

oh,yeah i see what you mean

basically, yes.  the oblivion theme builds up for about 25 seconds then goes all mellow, like JS just popped a Quaalude or something, for about 30 then builds back up again only to peter out a short while before getting to another build-up and mellow-out sequence.  the ES5 theme is a huge payoff started out by a strong yell.  even without the lyrics, it's a strong theme song all the way through.

kind of fitting really.  morrowind, dark elves, exotic sound.  es5, nords, strong sound.  es4, britons, wussy sappy crap.

what advances can one make in the field of hand held cameras?  Genetically larger hands for steadier shots?   Tongue

I know that that style can cause people to become nauseous or give them headaches, but it doesn't for me (however, 10 minutes with the half life 2 engine and i'm ready for the vomit bag).  i can certainly understand why that would turn some folks off.  but i loved the bourne trilogy and there were a ton of hand held shots in that, so i disagree that as a film making tool it's a mistake.
no, you make them bigger so they can house better optical stabilization technology then give the cameraman a shoulder harness to hold it.

I see this is on sale on steam this weekend and am curious if anyone has bought it and what you think.  I've read some reviews and the biggest nag is that it doesn't seem to do more than be a successor to East India Company that didn't do enough to separate it from that game.  It has some interesting mechanics that I find interesting and looks like it could be a great wallpaper generator with the backdrops and details they afford you in game.

It doesn't have the land based combat that Dawn of Discovery had but it does have ship-ship combat and ship-land, so that should serve to keep the late game interesting, as well as missions from your advisors.

In the end, is it a worthwhile purchase and is it different enough from the other games I have in a similar vein (Dawn of Discovery and Colonization)

that would be my guess as well.  i would expect them to have fewer cd keys than they expected.  i would also expect them to make good by everyone who purchased one after their stock ran out, preferably with a free dlc code to make up for the hassle.

if you don't hear from them soon, email them and see what they can do.  as a relatively new service, i would not expect them to drop the ball like this as it is a crowded market already and bad pr will hurt them.

planned on playing two worlds 2 and continuing on with the sp of singularity.  that one has grown on me too, it starts off kind of dull, action wise but soon gets so much better with the TMD.  it really has a bioshock feel with the weapon upgrades, even if you don't have free run over the island like you do for most of bioshock.  plus the weapons feel nice and weighty and the firefights are fun.

also picked up civ v as $20 is a killer deal and less than what i paid for civ iv by a long shot.  looking to give that a whirl later even though i know how addicting it can be.

i also installed the copy of tex murphy Pandora Directive via GoG and am anxious to try it out soon.

sadly, i haven't had much time so far except some kinect games with visiting family and friends and i have the joy of working on monday so no fun three day weekend for me.

I probably won't use them other than to move my initial spawn point into my main base (I usually fortify my spawn point anyways), to me it feels like it would be too much of a safety net.  I like the need for careful exploration, knowing that if anything happens I'll need to travel a long way back to try and reclaim my stuff.

while i certainly won't abuse it like that, it will be very nice not to have to fortify the spawn point just so you have a place to sleep at night after getting jumped by a creeper.

having the ability to forward time into the morning will also be a good thing (assuming that aspect is included)

looking forward to it.

As I mentioned in the appropiate thread, it probably comes from being a parent, but man... Is nothing sacred anymore in video games? Do we think its okay to everything humanly possible to scare?

I'm a parent as well, of a beautiful baby girl, and I can tell you that trailer disturbed me and pushed me out of my comfort zone. However, I believe that's the kind of feeling that true horror media is supposed to elicit from people. I have to admit, up to this point I have always viewed zombie video games as more of a version of whack-a-mole than anything truly horrific. The only scares I get from them are from the sudden "BOOO" types of scenes.

I do get the feeling of tension from playing zombie games. I do want to win and I want to get out alive. However, its not until watching this Dead Island trailer that the true horror of a zombie apocalypse has come to light in my mind. Zombies were once living, breathing people who now just want to kill you. And if the zombie infection were to hit my family - and especially my daughter - I don't really know what I'd do.

Finally - I don't think any zombie video games should be played by kids under a certain age, regardless of whether or not the trailer disturbs me. I would put this game in the same category as Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil, Typing of the Dead, and maybe even Plants Vs. Zombies. Its in the category of 'no way is my kid playing this until I think she's ready for it and I can explain what zombies are without scaring her.'

This. All of it. I too am the father of a beautiful girl, and the trailer made me uncomfortable and emotional, and I swear I got some dust in my eye while watching it.

thirded.  that trailer disturbed me far more than any game ever has, and that's not just due to the young girl.  the whole thing was shot in such a way that you feel the hopelessness of their plight which smacks of reality.
