A gta game this year is a bit of a leap IMHO, but given that skyrim has a relatively short interval from announcement to release, I suppose it could happen.

I would love a new gta, but next year would be fine by me. I would like to have some time between it and skyrim tbh.

Thing new except that cheap copy of singularity from amazon. I figure the next new game will be kz3 via rental, otherwise it's going into a dry spell for a bit.

The thing is, mech games haven't been all that popular lately.  Front Mission Evolved got a tepid reception.  Chrome Hounds has shut down its servers.  It's been a while since we've had a good pure mech game.  It's kind of like space flight simulations like X-Wing, Wing Commander, and Freespace haven't been made recently.  I don't know if we'll see either of these genres make a come back any time soon.

Makes me want to cry.  I love space games and mech games.  Also haven't seen much auto combat games.  I76 is still one of my favorite titles.  I really miss these types of games.

i would love a good game in any of those genres.  front mission evolved was not a good game in that genre.  they should have stuck with srpg instead.  closest we'll get to anything in those 3 is the new twisted metal, but that's only similar to i76 in that you drive around in both games with weapons on them.  gameplay was nothing alike.

i fear that mechwarrior game is dead.  too much pollution from the rights owners of robotech i fear.  (remember the mech in the trailer was one of the infamous models stolen from robotech).

6604  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Two Worlds 2 on: February 12, 2011, 10:25:13 AM
Well that's a slight relief then as everything on the first island gets crushed right now. I am close to leaving it myself and except for the poison using scorpions, I have not been near death for a while. I now have more money than I ever have and a ton of crafting materials except for chain. I finally dumped the freebie armor but I should go back and compare it at some point. At level 28, both 2H weapons are rated at over 1k and I rarely find myself facing mixed enemies, so I don't need to swap out much. Still have the bow going as it's been very useful to thin larger crowds. I'll tell you though, that 2H sweep is very handy.
6605  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gratuitous Space Battles on: February 12, 2011, 05:28:23 AM
cool.  that's the new campaign mode.

does that make the name wrong though?  if there is an overarching goal, then the battles are no longer gratuitous as they now have a purpose.

so, anyone take the leap yet?  i'd like to know how it stacks up to other 4x games and if they did a good job with it.

True Crime was 'virtually complete'

Quote
True Crime: Hong Kong was playable from start to finish and "virtually complete" in terms of content before Activision canned it, the developer behind the game told CVG.

damn, maybe someone else can pick it up like they did with Ghostbusters and Brutal Legend so the dev's work at least sees the light of day.

....and then get sued after the game is released, inevitably.  Stupid Activision...just stupid.

god damnit activision is trying so hard to make me hate them more than ea.  after this and the IW debacle, their place as biggest 'shitty company run by a douche' in the industry is sealed.

and after ea's history of buying and closing all of my favorite developers, that's a lot of ingrained hate.

The translation from PC to console controls are detailed at Eurogamer.

As enemies can't be click-selected, you now move forwards slightly with each swing, smashing whatever is closest (this will be highlighted red) and bruising anything nearby. Animations have been "redone" accordingly, and it all "feels natural and does what you expect", apparently.

Yup, this sounds quite similar to the differences in control between the PC and 360 versions of Dragon Age. Much to my surprise I actually prefer the 360 control scheme and have enjoyed that version more. Since I haven't played Torchlight yet I might eventually consider the 360 version, just as long as it doesn't cost over 1200 pts.

sadly, it is 1200 points.  saw a post earlier.

The bashing weapons do improve as you go on. I am sticking with my two handed sword or club and the club does about 30-40 more. This is at level 22 and after the strength skill kicks in, the weapon skill is over 600. Every level of upgrade adds about 15 to damage and I had no problems going through the first 7 levels of the arena battles. I even did pretty well against a werewolf once I learned to get out of his charge attack. I would not want to face more than oneat a time.

Quote from: Caine on February 05, 2011, 07:51:02 PM

i am playing a mostly melee character using 2h weapons with some archery for kiting enemies and hunting.  i read that magic is insanely powerful at the later levels but due to the way you build your character, you really benefit from multi-classing, and not just how that regards armor.  i guess getting your relevant magic affinities up so you can use more spell modifiers can make most encounters trivial.  apparently the best weapon is also a staff whereas the best melee weapon tops out at a relatively low level and relies more on brute strength to make up for it.

there are very few useless skills, but the backstab skill is pretty much ineffective outside of some random moments.  i have it and regret putting the points into it as it only allows you to stab from further away, which makes no sense.  unless it allows you to stay hidden further away and therefore, tele-stab enemies outside of their field of vision, you will always get spotted before you can get more than one or two backstabs.  it's only use is for achievement hunting and the only reason i even bother.  it may be more useful if you rely on traps for crowd control.  that's also why the poison arrows are less effective than the other archery skills.  it drains them out too slowly.  it might make a difference if you can stay away from a huge mob who would crush you in one hit though.

in my main, i have counter, block breaker and defensive stance as my main skills with the radial hit and the kick as secondary attacks.  i think the other skills would be great if you want to specialize in certain forms of melee combat though as you can do quite a few tricks

as for loot, i tend to stick with breaking down all the lower level stuff ( you can tell an item's relative value by the number next to the star).  anything that is close to my current gear gets saved for sale and everything that's usually trash loot, i break down.  but once you have done most of the main island, you will probably be flush with just about everything except fabric, especially as you face a lot of groms with bows and those give you several wood, steel and iron from both the bow and the quiver.  i usually keep the staves to sell as you only get wood from them.  then i break down stuff that's heavy if i am not able to port back to town, but you don't need to as the stuff stays on the ground for quite a long time and you can usually stash it away in a chest or something while you go back.

the crafting skills are you friend imo.  they allow you to upgrade your weapons considerably and make the most difference for damage output and armor class.  even a nuke wizard will benefit as it will help you buff  your spells up via more crystal slots.  that's the next thing too, if you start seeing more crystals that you can't slot into your equipment, increase the skill to let you use them.  it also lets you fuse higher quality gems together.  you should do that whenever you get more than one of the same item, at least of the lowest quality as you don't lose anything in the process, just reduce the quantity of slots you need to get the most benefit.

it pays to explore the whole of the main island once you get into the teens as you can generally take on anything that you face and are more than likely going to wipe anything above ground, but also as you can find some skill books in out of the way spots.  i already have both the weapon and armor crafting skills even though i don't have my levels in metallurgy high enough to use them.  it did allow me an extra upgrade for "free" though without bumping the metallurgy skill.

i mentioned it before, but you do get extra skill points for hitting certain benchmarks in the game.  killing x number of mobs, opening x locked chests, at intervals for finding portal stones, etc.  it pays to watch those and also benefits multi classing (as you have more actions to perform which gives you more ways to earn skill points).

i don't know if a pure class is easy as you will always have some benefit from using another class specialty.  i plan on going through sp with my melee/ranger and mp as a battlemage. within the same class though, it pays to not spread your skills too thin.  it also pays not to spread your attributes too wide either as you can't respec those and i have no use for high wisdom in my build at all.

sorry for the long winded post...

oh, and myto, i am happy to see you picked this up.  figured you would like this one

IMO, everyone should root their phone if you can. The amount of different roms out there are amazing.I'm running MIUI on my droid and it's absolutely fantastic. Incredibly fast with lots of good extras.

rooting is simple and almost impossible to brick your phone.

i did get a chance to play with both of those, and the evo shift and like what i saw in the evo.  not being able to easily view the screen in the sunlight isn't something i was aware of, so that's a pretty big knock against the screen, no matter how pretty it is, imo.  it's not like i do a ton of work outside, but that would be annoying to have to shield it just to read what's on it.  i definitely liked the solid design of the evo vs the epic.  that htc is more attuned to updating the os is a good thing too.

just to clarify because i'm not sure from your post which phone worries you, but i think the screen on the Evo does surprisingly well in bright sunlight...not perfect, but it's definitely useable without having to search for shade.  i haven't seen the Epic used outside (or any other OLED screen phone for that matter), but it seems that i've heard more complaints about them.

Quote
living in the seattle metro area, it appears that 4g is live in most of the areas i frequent with some spottiness here and there.  that's acceptable as i haven't been able to keep a call on at&t going from one county to the next anyways.  it will be a nice boost whenever i am at work or home (hopefully) and certainly while riding back and forth.

keep in mind that 4G is primarily a data service is not really responsible for handling phone calls...those are still handled by Sprint's CDMA cellular network.  think of 4G service more as mobile broadband that you use to speed up the data functions of your phone.  in a phone like the Evo, there are separate radio systems for calling and 4G...that's why you can turn 4G functionality on and off separately from everything else and conserve your battery a little.  the separate 4G radio also has the advantage of making Sprint 4G phones the only ones on their service capable of simultaneous data and voice use without a wifi connection.  Sprint's CDMA technology normally keeps you from talking and using 3G data service at the same time (same with Verizon), but having a 4G connection available allows you to do both at the same time...a nice little perk sometimes.  confused yet?

no, not quite.  thanks for pointing that out.  i hadn't even considered that aspect of the service (being able to use both simultaneously).  that will be great and it eliminates one advantage that i like about at&t.

as for the screen, i was referring to the amoled screens and the epic.  i did notice the better quality on the epic but if that means it's more troublesome in the sunlight, it loses some of that advantage imo.

Quote from: Chaz on February 05, 2011, 07:53:46 PM

I'm pretty sure that when you change service away from the iphone, it basically turns into an ipod touch.  I haven't booted up my 3g in a while, but I was definitely able to access apps and get onto my home wireless network with mine a few weeks after ditching it in favor of a Droid Incredible in December.
thank you chaz.  that's reassuring then.
