Hope they do more of these little packs. If I didn't already have half of these in some form I would snap this up.

while jake is not going to turn anyone's opinions of him with one movie, neither did leo.  the trailer looked kind of fun and it has a nice sci-fi hook to it.  could be a good diversion movie

picked this up last week on a sale.  love it.  watched it twice in two days (once while the wife was at work as i had no desire to play anything) and again friday night with her.  what i expected to happen didn't; i figured she would be bored and want to switch it off in favor of a crime show.  she enjoyed it as much as i did.  almost.  i think it's brilliant and it's one of those movies that i won't get bored of watching.  great characters and both scott and ramona  were cast perfectly.

i think they did a great job with the music as well.
6608  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Killzone 3 on: February 27, 2011, 11:49:06 PM
Just finished this as well and while it felt a little too routine towards the end with the vehicle segments, I enjoyed it. The lack of a real boss fight against the big bad guys is a let down though. I liked the battle with the giant mech though.

The stealth level was a bit odd though as you get to a certain point and then can't be stealthy any more. The jet pack was interesting but under used. The late game weapons were fun. I loved the bfg and the missile/mortar launcher and of course the design to let you carry it around with a regular assault rifle.

Played a lot of killzone 3 to the point of almost finishing it. It's pretty solid for a shooter but I will probably send it back when I'm done as I still have a huge backlog to work through.

if it's the same price up here, then that's way out of line with what they include.  some unlocks and a small book?  how about no.

6612  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Killzone 3 on: February 25, 2011, 05:28:11 AM
with any luck i will be able to try this out over the weekend.  damnable snow put a dent in the deliveries this week so it might not happen.  i enjoyed 2 for what it did different but other than an annoying end boss, i can't describe anything about the campaign that i remember standing out from the crowd.

Unclear how involved Jon Van Caneghem was for C&C4 (came late, name not in credits). Maybe he can help right the ship (creater of HOMM, Kings Bounty...), although I don't see any RTSs on his bio either (which as discussion noted, could be good).

maybe they'll try something new and make it turned based.....

i can see it now, TB free-to-play facebook game.  or we'll get something like the xbla version of wing commander and bsg, aka "slap a well-known vehicle skin over generic top-down arena shooter and call it a day".

I don't think that's a very good comparison, except for the Morrowind and Oblivion. Skyrim's sound has clearly been compressed so much that you can no longer recognize the dynamics just by looking at the waveform.

fair request.
all three in the same time scale with the actual theme clipped out.

of course, there are a number of artifacts in the es5 sample

i love how they revisited the morrowind theme.

not quite sure what you mean,as i just heard The Elder Scrolls theme same as Morrowind and Oblivion, but with a choir(which i agree was brilliant)..it's always just slightly different with each game...unless you meant another part which i didn't recognize

He means that the theme goes all the way through and doesn't stop just before the climax like Oblivion's theme did. That was always so frustrating with that game, hearing all the buildup and then having it fizzle away into nothing.

oh,yeah i see what you mean

basically, yes.  the oblivion theme builds up for about 25 seconds then goes all mellow, like JS just popped a Quaalude or something, for about 30 then builds back up again only to peter out a short while before getting to another build-up and mellow-out sequence.  the ES5 theme is a huge payoff started out by a strong yell.  even without the lyrics, it's a strong theme song all the way through.

kind of fitting really.  morrowind, dark elves, exotic sound.  es5, nords, strong sound.  es4, britons, wussy sappy crap.

I think handhelds are in their infancy and sometime down the road we may see inspiration in their use in a way I can't imagine and I'll love it.  It took 30 years for 3D to reach that point for me, so I'm not holding my breath.

what advances can one make in the field of hand held cameras?  Genetically larger hands for steadier shots?   Tongue

I know that that style can cause people to become nauseous or give them headaches, but it doesn't for me (however, 10 minutes with the half life 2 engine and i'm ready for the vomit bag).  i can certainly understand why that would turn some folks off.  but i loved the bourne trilogy and there were a ton of hand held shots in that, so i disagree that as a film making tool it's a mistake.
no, you make them bigger so they can house better optical stabilization technology then give the cameraman a shoulder harness to hold it.

that would be impressive if it all turns out to be as playable on the 360 at that level of detail.  it would also save me the impending hassle of upgrading my pc.  it is time though.  the current one was built for oblivion and hasn't been upgraded since.

I understand the general hatred for "announcing a forthcoming announcement", but I don't think this really qualifies.  It's just some news site taking a couple sentences from a podcast and making a news story out of it.  Major Nelson wasn't announcing an announcement, he was just talking about what they will be doing at GDC and not able to give specifics on a few things yet.

In fact, if this thread hadn't been created I wouldn't have even heard about this before the actual announcement, so I think we should just blame metallicorphan for propagating the madness!   icon_twisted

6640  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Commander: Conquest of the Americas on: February 20, 2011, 04:56:42 PM
I see this is on sale on steam this weekend and am curious if anyone has bought it and what you think.  I've read some reviews and the biggest nag is that it doesn't seem to do more than be a successor to East India Company that didn't do enough to separate it from that game.  It has some interesting mechanics that I find interesting and looks like it could be a great wallpaper generator with the backdrops and details they afford you in game.

It doesn't have the land based combat that Dawn of Discovery had but it does have ship-ship combat and ship-land, so that should serve to keep the late game interesting, as well as missions from your advisors.

In the end, is it a worthwhile purchase and is it different enough from the other games I have in a similar vein (Dawn of Discovery and Colonization)
