in the same vein as X-Wing/Tie Fighter, i would love a sequel to Independence War 2.

Other games that would also be sure signs I had died:
Terra Nova
Heavy Gear
Star Wars: Dark Forces: Jedi Knight

I'll hVe try that as it is very disorienting to not hear anything except for the music. I only had them working until the dock and once again as a boat jetted by. I'll let you know how it goes.
6614  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What recent PC game should I play? on: March 21, 2011, 05:41:00 PM
I would imagine you could use the controller mapping software to run crysis with the 360 controller. It's anpretry long one as well but fun up until the ET's show up.

I would recommend crysis warhead instead.

Want a more tactical shooter?  Armed Assault 2 would be my choice.

How would they reconcile the two separate pricing structures?  360 gamers pay to play online, PC gamers don't.
simple. Call it a premium feature and charge for it. I wouldn't expect them to give this away for free and I wouldn't expect the online pc community to agree to pay for it, so he whole thing will end up as a hollow offer so ms can say they tried.

basically, burning up time until crysis 2 hits this week.
6617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: White Gold: Xenus 2, aka Boiling Point psuedo Sequel on: March 21, 2011, 05:31:51 AM
My first half day in Xenus-land:

After a refreshing short video on the dangers of cocaine (don't do drugs kids, they're bad, ok.  -Nancy Reagan) I find myself on the back of a boat with a mounted machine gun being ferried away into an island chain.  All is fine in the tropics and the weather, as pointed out by the protaganist with the british accent, is nice.  That is until The Bad Guys show up and start shooting up the place.  Well, we can't have that so I open fire on their boats with the machine gun I mentioned earlier until the boat gets a requisite number of bullet holes in its rickety frame and the boat stops.  Well, all the boats stop, ours and theirs, as does their remaining helicopter.  They must have sensed our predicament and decide to stay out of the impending blast, which happens just as soon as I jump into the water.  I end up an indeterminate time later on the dock with the fisherman.  He seems like a nice enough fellow, so I pay him the 500 pesos he asks for and bid him good day.  I am informed that this short stint has provided me with enough experience to level up.  Grand idea I think, let's see what is in store for me.  I can increase my carrying capacity, get the ability to aim and some other random options.  Ooh, aiming sounds like a capital idea and I go for that one.

Ah, paradise.  There are swaying palm trees around, chickens and rats running about their day to day business of being animals and the surest sign that this is poor country.  No running motor vehicles around any where and everyone I see of middle age is standing around aimlessly chatting up whomever walks by.  Myself, for instance.  One such fellow asks me to insult his friend.  Why yes I say, no better way to ingratiate myself than go about calling strangers bad names.  I do so after realizing his friend is but a few paces away.  He's heard the offer and tells me the whole story.  Seems this other fellow has a bet and can't personally insult this friend so he goes and asks others to be his voice.  He offers me a counter; go back and insult him enough to break his insult-monk vow and lose the bet.  A short time later, I have enraged him enough to do so and have made myself 25 bucks and learned a little along the way.  It's not enough to level up again, but at least I am on the way.

As I walk up the dirty path someone on a radio alerts my attention to a gentleman standing atop a tall rock along the road.  How did he get there the voice (not really a voice, just text.  the only actual voices I have heard so far were in the intro movies) asks?  Well, that's a quandary as I can't see it myself.  Just a big rock with a guy wearing a red t-shirt standing on top like just climbed Mt Everest.  Moving on, an old man bumps into me and strikes up a conversation about fish.  I guess I could buy some from him if I want, but seeing as how I just gave the fisherman some money I decide to wait.  The Voice on the radio tells me to buy a better weapon as "a kid could put me down in two shots" as he puts it.

Instead of buying what could be a tasty bit of fish, I decide to search around for food, just in case that kid finds me.  Behind most houses are little crates.  Most of these little crates are revealed to have food, lockpicks, even ammunition.  Ah, good deal.  I proceed to search every crate in sight and try my hand at picking the occasional locked box.  Good thing the locals don't seem to mind my indiscretion and I am soon flush with supplies.  I have also picked up the neighborhood trash in the form of their empty bottles.  Lucky for me, I spot a man named "empty bottle buyer" and decide to sell him my unused empties.  Ah, a nice income and soon I have cleaned up the streets.  Now I truly feel like a homeless man in paradise.  As I make my way around this little town I come across a treasure trove:  a dozen empty bottles.  Score!

I meet a husband who pays me 55 pesos to talk to his wife.  A diver asks me to go to the other side of the island to find an oxygen tank so I can save his friend from an underwater creature.  Good thing he has an air pocket.  It gets late so I head back around the island to sell my bottles but it seems everyone has gone inside for the night.  I look for a place to sleep but alas, all the doors are locked.  I find the bottle buyers hut and lie down on his porch.

Tomorrow I go out to the next town over.  I am certain to find more valuable trash to pick up.

All unlocks gone.
Challenges still kept my kill progress so I'm guessing something didn't load properly and saved over once I got 5 kills with a gun.

I take it you're playing on the PS3?

on a side note, i finished the sp yesterday and boy, what a short game that was.  i had gotten to the only stealth section and was able to finish that, the "you could see it coming from a mile away" helicopter level, and fought my way up onto a bridge.  then bam, game over.  i get that they want to set up a sequel but the whole thing just felt like a cop-out.  a massive invasion of half of the US and the NK's are pushed out simply because the air force ran low on fuel?  granted, it was just one city the NK's lost, but to have such a swing from occupation to rebellion is a bit too hollywood ending.

i also think the stealth level could have been designed better.  how is it that a group of 4 armed soldiers are able to sneak around a base in the middle of day without anyone noticing?  there were so many moments when the AI was clearly scripted to just stand there with it's back to you and not respond unless you walked up and knifed them in the face.  there was a moment earlier in the game half way through the first level where a patrol is scripted to pass by and one of the NK's got turned around.  he was completely oblivious when all three of us ran right in front of him.

glad i stayed with a rental at this point.  i do agree with Ron's assessment of the guns though.  they all felt like they did damage and you didn't see a lot of bullet sponges with no reaction until you hit their magical zero health bar.

a sign you have too many games on Steam:  you see a particular title on sale multiple times and think 'damn, I wish I had waited for a sale', only to later on go to install said title and find out that you don't actually own it  icon_lol

the kicker being that you waited to install it after the sale was over.

in any case, they have Xenus 2 for all of five bucks, for at least this weekend.  there was a hilarious write up on RPS about this, you can read it here.

not sure i want to add another DL service to the mix.  i already have my steam, impulse, d2d, gog, gamersgate, and green man gaming services.  getting hard to keep track of what games i have out there.

Seeing that I highly doubt that there will be a lot of MP servers with decent pings to me, would this game be worth it for the SP campaign alone?

so far, my impression of the sp is someone took the urban defense mission out of MW2 and made it into a game.  insert "shocking scenes" into the action with occasional breaks in the combat to make it seem more serious.

tbh, if you aren't planning on hitting the mp much, wait for a price drop.  besides, crysis 2 hits next week and should be a much better sp game.

i have never used it for games, but you could try win xp mode before going with the whole re-partitioning deal, which can be a pita if you don't have the right software.

you'll need win 7 pro or better though.

apparently it's changed an you don't need pro to download this any more.

might be worth a shot for a quick trial before you go all out with the partitioning.  if you do go that route, make sure to get a good backup in case it goes south on you.  you could also get a 2nd disk and dual boot to it.
