it really bums me that multitasking is out.  when you have such a powerful device in your hands, running just one app on it at a time knocks it down a notch, especially compared to similar devices.

the 3g is nice, but $130 nice?  they need to drop the price difference down for me, but having 3g would make this a glorified phone with voip, no?

that's pretty sweet
takes the hassle out of swiping different squaddies gear before every mission.
6603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass effect 2 Launch and impressions (the REAL One) on: January 25, 2010, 08:59:45 PM
from what i understand, the extra 10 levels will bump you up to level 5 or so and *something extra*.  the side missions could give you a better spread of starting stuff/side plots.  seeing as how you could play through the first and doing everything completely different, it should have been made optional for everything you accomplished attributed to the main save you used throughout me 1.

from what i have read, it also doesn't count if you only played up to level 60 in a playthrough, but didn't beat it.

here's something i haven't seen/heard yet.  do the achievements grant you bonuses in game?  i loved that aspect in the first and somewhat disappointed that other games haven't done the same thing.
6604  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dark Void, from the makers of Crimson Skies on: January 25, 2010, 08:53:31 PM
i finished this last night and am going to go back and try a few things i missed.  hardcore is a definitely no walk in the park, but it's certainly less frustrating than some other games (i'm looking at you, modern warfare).  the biggest gripe i have is with the escort missions, but i came to realize that i was more frustrated with the game's instruction than anything else.  the ark escort mission is much more difficult for this reason.  the generators are the key and if you can't keep the fighters off it them, you lose in no time at all.  unfortunately, while you may be able to use one of your weapons to recharge them, you can't swap out mid mission unless you exit to the main menu.  there's also little instruction that you could do exactly that (recharge them) and instead it feels like every bogie in the sector is capable of taking it out by themselves.  i spent more time on that mission than anywhere else except one sequence against three archons (and the ark, again).

then there are the glitches.  i had run into them twice before (early on, before the jetpack) and during a rescue mission.  the first glitch was resolved when i restarted the checkpoint, but i had to restart the rescue level from scratch.  when i hit the last sequence of the ark mission, it appeared to glitch again at the very end.  i paused it and went to search for others who hit the same problem. here, instead of a glitch, the game just fails to update your objectives, so i (and many others) ended up thinking it was glitched.  oh, fun.  nothing like fighting through a difficult and frustrating mission only to get stuck on the last section.

if they had addressed both of those issues earlier, it would have stayed a 80-85.  i do think some of the drawbacks pointed out in the reviews are valid; bland textures and levels while flying, getting killed while in a qte from outside sources. i do think the game is fun beyond those small issues and is only held back due to the glitches.

estimated time to finish is around 15-18 hours on hard, probably 12 or so on normal.  some replayability due to hardcore difficulty and goodie hunting, but no game play choices to change and no multiplayer (a big negative, as mp could have been a great mix of tribes, crimson skies, and gow, plus vehicles.  potential is great for mp in a sequel)

ME2, no question.

ME too

although, it's getting shipped from gamefly, so while i will be getting it cheaper, i will be waiting, first on the game, then on the box with it's dlc code.

it will give me time to wrap up with dark void.

9.6 from IGn.  I'm not reading it, so be warned there may be spoilers.

The text review is pretty spoiler-free. However, do NOT watch the video review, as it has plenty of spoilery stuff, including most of the scenes from the launch trailer (but shown out of order).

On the same page is a somewhat humorous 5 minute video summary of the first Mass Effect for those who never played the game.

yeah, you should be ok reading it if you are on the fence at all.  nothing that i would consider spoilerish.  in essence, all he says is things relate to ME1 and may be either revelations or plot twists involved.  if you played ME, you can probably think of several aspects of its plot that fit that description.

this is going to be good.

The loading screen is right about the pack guns though. I upgraded them and finally got a good place to use them on the prison break level: took out a bunch of those cannon using watchers with 2 passes on hardcore. It also tears up the knights something fierce.

There have been a few glitches though;  I've had to quit and reload from the dashboard as the last defend section of the prison level wouldn't trigger. I also had an enemy go AWOL on me and I couldn't find it to clear the area.

The game defintely grows on you, doesn't it?

Sounds like this just happened to be a cool game for reviewers to rail on.

i figured as much when another forum basically panned the demo and said it was bad-mediocre, and then i enjoyed it.  the reviews said that controls were fine and the action was good, so i don't know why they ended up at 5's and 6's.  at this point, i'd give it a solid 8.5 as it has done everything it set out to do very well.

ya i like the ai too.  i was a fan of the demo and yup the full game still managed to be better than i prepared.  been pleasantly surprised still, the game keeps things interesting and so far has yet to go stale (still keeping a really good mix of indoor/outdoor/flying and "transition" missions).

caine youll find that circle strafing doesnt seem to be the way to go in this game.  its more about finding a nice bit of cover, suppressing / killing off a couple guys then moving to flank while also watching your own.  i only circle strafe when im one on one and pretty much have the situation in hand.  otherwise the hit to aim and being out in the open is just far too risky.

i guess i needed to be more specific about strafing.  i meant it in the classic military sense, as in ground attack with the jetpack's guns at flight.  i tend to move too fast to get many shots on them before i have to divert or go vtol.  it's a good challenge though.

Glad I only paid $2.50 for this, since I can't play it for more than 5 minutes without it giving me a raging headache.
almost the same thing for me except I paid $5 for it and can play about half an hour before having to quit.  Motion sickness + headache FTL

I wish they had put the demo out sooner; would have saved me the trouble.

Played through act 1 last night and the full game is defintely better than the demo led
me to believe. I'm having fun with it so far even though I can't strafe ground troops very well. The vertical cover works pretty well and the ai puts up a decent fight at the highest difficulty without resorting to triple health or huge spawns.   thumbsup

in the same boat.  i decided not to get this with the TRU deal as i really should limit my game purchases to just the cream of the crop for a while.

hoping it's in the mail tomorrow.  i usually get them 4 days after the email, so i could play a bit tomorrow night.

btw, i knew the music was bsg-esque, but i didn't realize until the eurogamer review why;  it's the same guy.  that alone brings this up a notch in my book and makes me curious if there is a soundtrack available.
6615  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect 2 Teaser and stuff! on: January 21, 2010, 04:46:31 AM
i just finished up me 1 last night, oddly enough for the first time since burning out on it way back.  not sure i liked the coin flip aspects to the ending, but i do hope they port the major aspects of the game into the sequel so i can get into it like a movie would.  i also hope they make it useful to have buffed up my sniper rifle in the first and start me out with something nice.  hell, give me a worn down version of the one i got with scuff marks and i'll be happy, even though it will be nerfed in some form.  i would like to see the character's face look slightly older this time.

if nothing else, open up a few side missions due to all the exploring i did.

seeing as how none of the major retailers are doing a great special (tru has one, but it's not that great) i think i'll just grab it from best buy on launch.

I had that happen with battlestations pacific. It was one of those $5 specials on d2d. It doesn't give you a code for gfw so every time I wanted to play the campaign it would force me
to restart. Needless to say I didn't play it much.  Basically spent 5 bucks on a long demo. :/

didn't they send you a product key when you downloaded it?
just for their activation.  the gfw key is shorter than what they gave me and it's not part of the code i got.  could be i missed something, though.

yup, the key i have is the activation key, not the product key.  at least i don't need a license key or a serial key, and thank god it's not a registration key.  man, download services make everything so easy, don't they?
6617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Saboteur on: January 20, 2010, 05:04:41 PM
no, but then i never even found the midnight club to begin with.  i'll have to try that before i send the game away.

total finish time for me was just over 48 hours, with everything completed.  i found the best way to take out the free play targets was to take the long way to a mission objective and walk there, taking out anything i could on the way.  i also went on a few rampages and cleared out whole areas that looked challenging.  once you get the ability to plant bombs without raising suspicion, you can really do some damage.  i was planting them near soldiers feet and trying to set up chain reactions.  the explosives can easily take out more than one target if they are close enough, and because you can set a tnt without lighting it, you can also use it alongside rdx to take out tanks.  those were ridiculously easy though;  seems the nazis only consider your actions suspicious if you jump on top the tank or stand right next to them.  most of the time, you can walk right up to the tank, get a bit suspicious until you are right next to it, light the tnt and run.  not even so much as an alarm and you get away before the reinforcements arrive, without using a uniform.

i have some tricks if anybody is finding particular perks hard to get.  there is also one major exploitable glitch you can use if you get tired of stealthing the free play targets, but it requires you to not beat the game.  there is an exploit for the free races as well and one for getting the 5 generals perk quite early on.

over all, it was a great time and it just makes it worse that it's their last.  FN EA.   finger

If it's enjoyable to get or something that I don't have to go out of my way to get, then I'll chase down a few. I won't punish myself by drudging through something monotonous or frustrating; veteran mode on the first mw broke my desire to play it ever again or even bother with it beyond a few levels.

If I'm so close to the 1k, and I haven't burnt out, I'll try for it, but I have a few games with 1 or 2 left that I'll never bother going after.

If you lost the rdx itself, that would suck big time.

Too bad you didn't get the urge last month; Steam had it for $5.

6628  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Windows 7 deals? or sites? on: January 17, 2010, 08:47:40 PM
You don't need the full install version. Install the upgrade version, but don't enter in the serial key until after you have finished with the os. You can even run without activation for quite a while if you want to check out the 64 bit version with your games and programs for compatibility issues first. Just google 'slrearm win7'. One thing to note regarding drm'ed games; most cp drivers included with the disc do not work in 64. I had to install a 64 bit Tages driver to get beyond good & evil working, and I wouldn't be surprised if the others had 64 drivers as well.

One of my "oh damn, did I actually buy the whole damn pack" steam snafu. Yet to be experienced, but I intend to force myself to play every last damn game in the pack to both see if anything is worth a damn and to remind myself of the dangers of rushing through late night purchases.

From the looks of the screenshots on this ones page, I could tell it was a boring sci-fi fps clone.

Demo impressions are all over the map, ranging from 'mediocre' to 'crap', so I am not holding out much hope for this on any platform. Targeting is sloppy and the whole thing comes off as kind of 'meh'. I'll try it out later and see if it's worth renting.

6638  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: The Steam Holiday sale is live! Daily deals too! on: January 04, 2010, 09:13:57 PM
well, i'm slightly annoyed at both steam and myself, and my isp too tbh.  i bought the meridian 4 package from steam when i only intended to get the shadowgrounds pack.  my isp has had connection problems the last two weeks and has been intermittent throughout the sale, so i missed many of the one day deals.  well, with yesterday being the last, i stayed online until past 1 so i could get some of the encores and other sale items i was interested in.  i did get a handful of games in one transaction, then remembered a few others, so i tried for those too.  keep in mind, the whole time, my modem keeps dropping and refreshing the connection, sometimes a few cycles of trying this before i was able to get through a purchase, so i was very careful to get the transaction done in time before a dropped connection reset my shopping cart.  to top this all off, i have been fighting off a sinus infection and had taken an advil and a benadryl earlier.  (in hindsight, probably not a good thing to do before shopping on-line)

so, i found that both shadowgrounds games were bundled for a buck more than the sequel, so i got that one plus zombie driver and was going through the purchase when my dsl dropped again.  after a few minutes, i was able to get back in, nothing in the cart.  very quickly (or too quickly if you prefer) i had gone through the search page, got zombie in there, then again for shadowgrounds.  when i went to click the bundle, i apparently mis-clicked in my haste and put the complete package instead and didn't notice it until i had sped through the rest of the screens.  i actually saw it as i clicked through 'accept' even as my drowsy mind saw the total and thought, 'wait, it's supposed to be ~10 or 11 bucks, top, not almost 35?!' but was too late to do anything about it.

so, now i am the unwitting owner of a bunch of games i have either a) never heard of, b) never intended to play, and c) have such a backlog already that they will probably sit in my uninstalled steam games list until the end of time.

are any of these worth playing, or did i just end up with the most expensive way to buy shadowgrounds survivor?

Shadowgrounds, Gumboy - Crazy Adventures™, RIP - Trilogy™, Vigil: Blood Bitterness™, Alpha Prime, Shadowgrounds Survivor, Space Trader: Merchant Marine, Pacific Storm, Pacific Storm Allies, Penguins Arena: Sedna's World, Obulis, Larva Mortus, Chains, Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals, Crash Time 2, Tank Universal

looking at some of those, the pacific storm games seem interesting, although not necessilarly my cup of tea (and already in a category where i have battle stations pacific), crash time looks great, but is an unknown, and a few are puzzle games that should be worth a try.  the rest are all ?? though.

GTA 3 would have to be mine, as of all the greats, few spawned and defined a genre as well as this one has.  RB/GH do it for music, but no other companies have seen much success with their attempts.  GTA is the template that all sandbox games start from.  It influences games outside it's genre; SSX 3, Tony hawk's proving ground, burnout paradise, just by the proof that 'yes, it can be done'.  Many SB games are just as good as 3 was, and some are better; some are on this list aready.

It also made a huge impact socially and brought to life that not gamers were more than just teenagers.
