6601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (03/14) on: March 15, 2010, 07:45:14 AM
Waiting on reviews for metro and infinite space. I haven't even played cnc3 so I'm not going to pick up 4 and never played any of the gow games.

Still waiting until next week for just cause 2.
6602  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: Do multiple threads clutter the board or help organize? on: March 14, 2010, 12:46:40 AM
I think it's appropriate for a game to have a pre and post release thread as it is annoying to wade through announcement, alpha and beta news, demo impressions and 'who's getting this and why?' questions before getting the actual players' impressions. I also have been annoyed by those who feel it necessary to soft police a new imp thread just because someone created a news thread three years before the game came out with a title that doesn't get updated as the OP isn't playing the game after release.

There's no reason to continue an imp thread on top of double digit preview thread;  the BC2 thread is a prime example of this and shows that it works.

If there isn't an imp thread on release for a game I'm interested in, I will make one,  simple as that.

I don't have you on my friends list Kagath.

Don't worry about how you match up against hark and kato.  Those two are consistently ranked in the top 10k. globally, so it's no shock they out rank the rest of us.

E first one doesn't quite measure up after the years IMO as it lacks a lot of polish and is very repetitive. I tried it on the pc and then on 360 and it comes off as an xbox game with prettier graphics. The spawling nature of the islands only highlighted how empty everything was and there was no real variety to the side
missions.

I enjoyed it despite this and played it quite a bit, but never finished it.
6612  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Spec Ops: The Line? on: March 10, 2010, 09:37:03 PM
Not sure Spec Ops can be in the same class as the big names, but if they can bring out some of the black hawk down sort of game, it could be a fun diversion.

You Fallout/PoP mashup threw me off at first, but it makes

How do suck games like this get sequels and Gladius never did and Beyond Good And Evil does/doesn't/does/doesn't/does over 7 years?

Gladius = niche, BG&E = niche, True Crime = mainstream potential.

precisely. How big is the market for gta clones vs. quirky adventure games?  Even though we've been flooded with gta-likes over the last few years, they still sell solid numbers. if JC3 makes it this year, it will be the 5th that I can think of off the top of my head.   I don't expect any of those other 4 to do poorly and I wouldn't be surprised to see two of them sell like gangbusters.

For reference, those would be Yak 3, JC2, crackdown 2, and red dead redemption.

EG has some screenshots and a small blurb from the reveal

open world in hong kong with an undercover cop with an emphasis on hand to hand combat and counter attacks ala batman, cover based shooter and a dash of free-running on foot.

they are looking to pull aspects of the genre from many sources, but can they make it work where the first two muddled about in gta's shadow?  we'll find out around the end of the year

fwiw, while i played and beat infamous and i enjoyed the first 2/3rds of prototype, it began to sour on me when they threw one of those boss battles of bad design at me.  a guy who blocks 90% of your attacks, hits you for a quarter of your health at every turn and puts you into a timed battle without the benefit of a timer.  i must have played that fight a dozen times before i sent it back to gamefly.  just not fun.

had a blast on monday night though.  got a win on rush when they all swept us up in our base and were tearing us to shreds as we spawned.  that is until some of us circle around them and knocked out both crates with 20 seconds of each other.  i would have loved to hear the chatter on their side after that match.

So I haven't seen this mentioned, but apparently the kill-cam in MP shows the person that killed you in real-time, rather than rewinding and showing what they were doing up to shooting you (like in MW2), right?  The first few times I watched it I couldn't figure out what was going on.  And there's no way to change the camera angle to view them from behind (and see what they're looking at) instead of from the front?  Not sure what the point of that is, I always used the kill-cam as a teaching tool to show me the mistakes I made, and this is rather useless for that purpose.

I think that there is a large part of the player base that does not like kill-cams because it gives away hiding spots. By only showing the player real time and from a rear-facing angle, the BC killcam 1) gives a hint as to the location of your killer without totally giving it away, 2) gives you something to look at while you wait for respawn and 3) avoids exposing lag issues with the game. I understand people's desires to not have a killcam, but it can get extremely frustrating to not have one at all when you are chain-dying. This seems like an okay compromise.

i do like the kill-cam here much better than mw2.  sure, it doesn't have the same opportunity to teach you what you did wrong, but that almost always boiled down to being exposed or having a slower trigger finger.  and it always made your job as a sniper (or concealed mg'er like me) harder.  it's one reason i always played hc in w@w.

now you at least have an idea where to look, but it doesn't give you an exact location.  and if you let a hill unguarded (or let the foliage remain, you deserve to be sniped).

now, if they can just patch up the wall-hacks and do something about the damn invulnerable lighthouse, they'll have a great game on their hands.

and sp was fun but as i played through a chunk of the first one's campaign (during bc2's network issues) i hope they go back to a more open world environment and keep some of the improvements from bc2.  i missed being able to carry two weapons of my choosing, having to swap out my knife after a melee, not having an easy grenade key and having to hold down L3 to run.

the story was fine, even though they ripped the last level off of mw and the ending was wrapped up as a cliffhanger.

That being the case, while you can install all three discs to hard drive for a seamless experience, there really is little point over and above the convenience and noise-reduction elements. Disc-swapping on Xbox 360 is kept to an absolute minimum and has next to no impact on the experience of playing Final Fantasy XIII.

All of that (especially "seamless experience") seemed to imply that an install let you bypass the swapping.  Now, it could be that they were making an assumption, of course, but the article went into so much depth about everything else, that it seems odd if that were the case.

Well, except for the part where it says that disc-swapping is kept to an absolute minimum.  That means there will be disc swapping.  Kept to a minimum means that you probably will only have to do it twice, which is what happened in Mass Effect 2.  For some people, this is the most horrible thing ever and they will buy the PS3 version to avoid it.

i think it was poorly worded, but intended as "seamless experience" OR "disk swapping kept to a minimum", not both.  i still think it's incorrect though as ms has never allowed a multi-cd game to play off just one disc that way.  i wonder what he implied by seamless though.  does the install have a noticeable effect on load times?

I was flying a blackhawk last night and getting repaired from a non-gunner in the back.

Imagine having a pilot, gunner, and repairman in a Blackhawk, each from a different squad so the whole rest of the team can spawn on the heli and parachute down to the objectives while the Blackhawk team rains down death and spots targets.

too bad the method to switch chat channels isn't easy enough to pull off quickly in game.  you could take the squad leaders and party up, then use their squad chat to coordinate the whole thing.

this would be awesome to set up.
6636  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sony develops degrading demos on: March 05, 2010, 05:24:10 PM
this sounds like an opening line in a piracy argument, but how many demo abusers would buy the game if it started degrading?

i guess i'm more confused by people who can buy the full game deciding to forgo buying it and stick with the same map instead.

with mp demos, i have to say it's probably for the best if it means demo players shouldn't be using up large amounts of server resources that would be better suited for paying customers.

i am curious about the numbers though.

I looked on 360voice - the release of BC2 hardly put a dent in the number of people playing MW2. That was surprising.

as long as you don't have to wait for a game to start due to painfully low numbers, i'm ok with this.  if bc2 has a rep for being less noob-friendly and not as 'cool', then it keeps the game from degrading into 14-yo smacktard land.
6638  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Just Cause 2 demo now up on: March 05, 2010, 05:10:35 PM
i fired this up before bc2 last night and it reminds me of saboteur in a sense.  open world, destruction limited to enemy emplacements and levels of control tied to enemy assets.

it's very hard to play this and not see some of the heavy weaponry just obliterate structures though, especially after red faction guerrilla and bc2.  i was expecting it to happen, but still held out hope they would adopt some level of rfg's fully destructible environments.  damn, that game really did change the way i appreciate open world games.

this takes the chaos and mayhem up a notch and improves on everything from the first one.  i played the first one and enjoyed it then.

it's a good time for sandbox games.
6639  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sony develops degrading demos on: March 05, 2010, 05:01:50 PM
this was done before with both l4d demos and then again with bc2 but it was a complete shut off.

not sure what the purpose of this is though.  it's not like you take anything from the demo into the full game anyways.

other than pre-release, who plays a demo more than a few times anyways?  once the game hits, if i liked the demo enough to play through twice, i'll buy the game.

Sony. Never too late to make a another bad decision.

So how does the leveling/XP progress compare to MW2?  I ask because after several matches over the last couple of days, I'm barely halfway to the first rank (Private Lvl 1).  I've unlocked the ammo crates for the Assault class and the repair tool for the engineer, but that's it.  I'm barely getting 500-600XP per match.

I'm not necessarily saying that the initial rapid advancement of MW2 is better, but I have to wonder if there are tasks or objectives that I'm missing somehow that provide more XP.  Or is ranking up really this slow?
I think I ranked up at least 2-3 times Tuesday night. (And don't forget you start out at rank zero, I believe. Are you spotting enemies for your team?  Spawning on your squad? (You get extra points for team activities if you aid your squad and not just your team.)

that's odd.  i was pulling in about 2-3k per round last night, with the exception of the round i joined on the last two objectives.  i got over 700 though.  i ranked up in about 2 hours, mostly playing the medic with small stints as a sniper.  spotting nets you 20 or so if someone kills them while your marker is alive.  you get 20 or 30 i think from assists and 50 from kills.  if you get more than 7 kills with the same weapon, you get 100.  so far, it's been quite a bit slower to rank up, but i've already bumped up my medic to unlock the saw, med kits, and a shotty (class-free i believe).

i do like the slower pace compared to mw2 though as you don't necessarily face an opponent with uber weaponry; they need to work as the class to get the class benefits rather than a general rank that unlocks X.  compared to the first night of mw2 where i ranked up like 8 times.

had a lot of fun playing in a pug last night, except for one stint as a bradley gunner when the driver couldn't drive worth a damn.  all in all, i don't think i lost a match once.

it's been annoying to see a uav up on your side and not getting the benefit of spotting though.  my first and only turn on the nfl box i was spotting as many enemies as possible during cooldowns.  it really helps cut down on flanking maneuvers, so it's pretty annoying when you got someone who camps up and stays beyond visual range.

looking forward to more mp.
