I've got DAI, FC4 and LBP3 coming and will then have the fun of choosing between the first two and ACU and waiting on the latter for XMAS gifting to the kids.

While not the end of the 2014 Q4 release list, this qualifies as one of the biggest.  If one phrase could describe this week, it would be 'open-world'  We have 2 different long awaited open-world RPGs, an open world sequel to compete against an open world remastered edition and an open-world port of an earlier game to WiiU.  And to top that off, a game sure to see the death of many a friendship and/or controller.

Ok, let's get to it.

I'm following the Seahawks again this season and while I'm glad they're winning again, I'm really concerned about their passing game - seems nonexistent at times. Unless they can get it together on that front, I won't be surprised if the 49ers finish ahead of them in the division. Not that I want Leo and Naednek to have the satisfaction of seeing that.  Tongue

PS CoachTressman, you're sucking in the NFL! Please come back to the CFL where the 3 downs & bigger field are more your cup of tea. And please make your return destination the BC Lions.  smile
Am I the only 1 that watched that Packers-Bears game? Good lord that was the pure definition of complete-ass-kicking!

The Seahawks abandoned their passing game when they let Golden Tate leave in free agency last year without even trying to counter with  a modestly competitive offer.  The Lions are beyond happy with his production, attitude, and work ethic so far this year.
Yeah, lots of us were questioning that move up here.  "At least we have Percy" :facepalm

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones too, because aside from framerate dips and the texture pop-in I haven't had any of these issues.  Arno has never gotten stuck, fallen through floors, no NPC strangeness, and no lock-ups.  It does drive me nuts there is no way to quit the game, I had one occasion where the map and menus wouldn't come up until I restarted, framerate seems to be getting worse the more I play, plus my Uplay account is totally screwed up for the companion app.  I deleted and re-downloaded, was working great until it had me log into Uplay.  After that all my progress was gone and I'm stuck back at mission 1 with no assassins to do missions and no way to recruit any.  This is even after upgrading to the premium version.  I'm pretty much screwed until they fix it, which is really irritating.  Ubi has burned me for the last time.  I am not buying anything published by them until they fix this abomination.  I don't care if the PC version of Rogue is discounted to a dollar, I refuse to support this company any more until they deliver what they promised.  If they never fix it then this will the last Ubi product I purchase, Assassin's Creed or otherwise.

Like I said though, I appear to be one of the lucky ones.
Yup, that's the same bug reported by a ton of people and is exactly what I ran across.  I didn't buy the premium app as I wanted to see what was locked behind the gate first.  If you don't sync the app, you can play just fine.  Sync, and there's a good chance you'll lose everything and get stuck.

They are aware and "working on a fix"

Yeah, this is hopefully a good thing. One can only hope that this rips them out of their annual release schedule and makes them think of the games first and the schedules second. The film industry can plan exact release dates years in advance. The game industry really can't, and Ubisoft should know that.
Agreed on the release schedule, but due to IP over-exposure, not development time.  ACU has 4 years of dev underneath it.  These kinds of issues should have never made it past internal bug testing.

Thanks, but not looking for help so much, just discussion. Although I don't really no where to start, an outline I guess? I am going to attempt to write my memoirs if nothing else. Thought others might like to share.

Curious...you didn't think it was worth trying if you couldn't get published? Wouldn't be fun to try regardless of the outcome?

No, it had nothing to do with being published, that's just my way of identifying the smaller works that you don't see printed and hanging out on shelves, IE Amazon self publish and indie publishers.  (Hugh Howey, Crusis for instance.)  It was more an indication that the caliber of their writing was much better than mine and what I had written was not in the same league.  I would need a lot of work to make the ideas I had into more than just a short story, but maybe that's all you need in the beginning.  I was hit with writer's block a lot in those days and easily distracted by gaming (so, pretty much the same now, but add wife and kids to the mix)

These days, I don't know where to begin to make a story worth writing, let alone one worth reading.  There is a lot of potential of course, but getting started is the hardest step in my case.
143  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Monument Valley on: November 13, 2014, 04:40:45 AM
The whole thing is overblown.  Yes, the game can be completed in a relatively short time, but the harder levels do provide a bit of a logic problem and can take a few minutes to complete or more if you aren't spatially apt.  Hell, I bought it twice technically (once on google play, once using amazon coins) primarily so I wouldn't have to mess with the sideloading-on-kindle process.  As long as the levels are not on the tutorial side, I'd love to have more levels.

PSA if you like premium priced games: Monument Valley's makers released a paid expansion to the game and people are giving the game 1 star reviews because of it. I had no interest in the game, but I will be buying it now in order to support the premium price model. Anyway, it's supposed to be really good.
I haven't looked at reviews, but why are they panning it?  The game wasn't big to begin with, so anyone who was a fan of the first release should already know what to expect.

Two tablets, a 2nd gen kindle hd 9in and a Asus transformer.  I'll use the kindle for reading books, but my wife uses it almost exclusively.  The TF is older and should really be restored to factory as it lags quite a bit with newer games.

I actually spend more time browsing on a chromebook due to the speed, low weight and full keyboard.

Anyone have any luck getting the companion app to work with the game?  I ran into a bug that almost everyone is reporting where after you sync to your game, you lose all progress and are unable to get any assassins, thus preventing you from continuing in the app past the first tutorial mission.

A few more thoughts now that I've had my coffee.

The sneaking system is functional, but it could use some work.  The lack of a cornering mechanism is odd, but you can manage somewhat, but the real lack of shadowing having an effect on your detection is a bigger issue.  It comes of as more of that AC jankiness you remember from other games.  It's imo, too forgiving and the AI is too easy to exploit when they are on guard.  Nobody seems to have a real good awareness of their immediate surroundings and doesn't investigate if they spot you momentarily.  It is still an improvement over other games though where you were forced (and the designers in turn) to "hide" behind 6 foot tall boxes and conveniently placed ground cover.

It's taking a bit of mental reprogramming to adapt to ACU's free-running because of the up/down changes.

I'm not sure how this reminds Glycerine of AC1 as I've kind of lost track of how that game played at the basic level of combat or movement, but it definitely is a change from IV.  Going to a Hitman approach to social stealth is a huge game changer for AC and the rest of the changes made from IV are bigger than the changes from ACR to ACIII.  It's such that if IV was your biggest favorite since AC2, I would recommend going with Rogue instead.
153  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: on: November 12, 2014, 01:27:03 PM
Ok, didn't get a ton of time with this last night, but I did play with acc eye towards the issues others have reported.

I've definitely seen frame drops in vacant areas off the game and during cutscenes, and I was able to reproduce the bad frame stutter while climbing on the stained  glass windows in the entrance building to the assassin's crypt. Very odd as it only does it when you climb and stops as soon as you drop from the window.

Combat is definitely more lethal than previous games, which is jarring if aren't expecting it.  Upgrades are handled quite differently, which isn't bad/good yet, but could be troublesome if you don't have a skill that the mission lets you exploit.

So, what's the story with this 15-gig Day 1 patch for the Master Chief Collection?  Is it possible to interrupt this for the sake of playing the campaigns, or is it basically locked down until finished?

-Autistic Angel

I read somewhere that, basically, the campaigns took up the whole disc, so the 15-gig Day 1 patch is the multiplayer components. Not sure it's accurate, but makes some sense (and means you'd probably be able to play the SP before the patch is done downloading?)
Wow, that's some amount of content that they had to strip out the mp maps from the disc.

Yeah, they've said that the big download is multiplayer-only components, so it would ensure people who "needed" that content to play would already be online.

From Game Informer's review:

Quote from: Matt Miller
The missions have little hand-holding, and youíre often expected to think creatively and solve problems on the fly. It makes this the most challenging Assassinís Creed title by a wide margin, and itís easy to get frustrated. The higher difficulty is pervasive, including in the newly revamped approach to stealth. Guards are far more aware than in previous games, and even new stealth options are rarely enough to keep anyone fooled for long. The combat system values punishment over communicating a sense of power; I like the increased need for observation in fights, and the expectation that I use all the tools at my disposal. However, the absence of reliable counters to devastating ranged shots is infuriating, and sometimes there are just too many enemies to understand whatís happening on screen.

I will be very interested to try this out for myself.  Based solely on this description, it sounds like exactly what I've wanted from the Assassin's Creed franchise for a long time: a sense of danger to the combat.  Even Brotherhood, which did combat flow better than any entry before or since, was more about slaying with style than fighting for your life.

On a side note, Miller scored Assassin's Creed: Rogue (8.25) a notch higher than Unity (8.0) and wrote:

Quote from: Matt Miller
For players trying to figure out which game to tackle first when two Assassinís Creed games release on the same day this year, the answer is to start here. Shayís story closes a number of story loops left behind on the American front of the Templar/Assassin conflict, and offers a crucial first step into the new European theater of war. Rogue proves why itís time for the franchise to chart some new territory, but leaves no doubt about why we fell in love in the first place.

I was considering waiting for the PC version in January, but with that Target B2G1 free sale still going on....

-Autistic Angel
Yeah, this would be a complete no-brainer if they had PC or PS4/XB1 versions now.  I really enjoyed AC4 and this has a great expansion on everything I liked about it.
