14681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 Transfer Kit - will it work with xbox saves? on: February 22, 2006, 07:40:29 PM

This looks like it'll solve some of the problems with the 360's save system, but will I be able to move my xbox saves?  That's the $14.99 question.

Any word on when it'll be in stores?
14682  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Power Stone for the PSP!!! on: February 18, 2006, 05:23:18 AM

Or do you mean, "WOOOOOO!"

I didn't know about the no online multiplayer.  That really blows.  Would have made the game ideal.  Ah, well, should still be fun.
14683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Power Stone for the PSP!!! on: February 18, 2006, 12:41:54 AM
With a really, REALLY shitty digital pad. And an analog pad that's unsuitable for most fighting games.

Fortunately, I think Power Stone may not be one of those games.

The Power Stone Collection comes out Fourth Quarter (which I think is late summer/fall?) 2006!   PS 1 & 2.
14685  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / BackComp in March? on: February 17, 2006, 09:46:39 PM
So, I'm starting to guess that whoever started that rumor about no Backwards Compatibility updates until March were maybe correct (and MS tried to squelch those rumors, if I remember correctly).  Huh.

The optimist in me hopes that this is a major update.  The realist thinks that if they had anything, they'd release it.  The pessimist says, "March?!  You're dreaming..."
14686  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I HATE KAMEO!!! on: February 17, 2006, 04:46:12 AM
Yeah, the underwater boss was something I'd been dreading, and maybe I focused my concentration to get through it, but it didn't seem so tough to me.

Interestingly, the strategy guide calls it one of the easiest bosses in the game (don't know that I'd go that far, though).

You know, I meant to slap up a Game Rankings comparison between
and DS
and go on about how the DS has so many better games, but I was suprised to find how similar the two are.  Granted, the DS's highest score is higher than the PSP's, but it's lowest is way lower (damn Ping Pals).  They both have exactly 72 titles (I was expecting the DS to have more).  They both have  17 games scoring 80% or higher.  Exactly 17.  The PSP actually has more titles scoring 70% and higher than the DS.  Now, keep in mind I'm looking at the Main Scores here (averages of Main review sites, 10 or more required).  But on cursory exploration, things don't change dramatically with other stats.

I guess it's all about perception.  And I'm not sure if it's that I'm perceiving that the PSP doesn't have the games and so isn't selling (and this would imply that ain't the case) or if it's that the DS is critically favored (which also ain't the case).  Does this mean the PSP is doing better than I thought, or worse?
14689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS Lite vs Nintendo DS - comparison shots... on: February 16, 2006, 09:16:36 PM
Looking at the pics, I really like the way the Lite looks closed. It almost makes the original DS look like it isn't put together properly.

To me, it looks like a frog.

It looks to be pretty much like Mercenaries in WW2.

That's what I wanted Mercenaries to be in the first place!  Not that it was a bad game at all, but I do love that WWII setting (yes, I guess I'm one of the reasons they keep putting games in that period).

The much brighter screen is a big plus, but even the slightly smaller size and weight will make a big difference in stylus + d-pad games like Metroid Prime Hunters and the recently announced Mechassault.

Sony should've just had some sort of official program - like an iTunes - that would convert DVD movies onto a readable file for a memory card.

Sony has that exact feature coming out in March.  Too little, too late, methinks.

From here:

Sony is hoping to combat online piracy starting in March when it begins selling movies online via its Connect digital media store. Users will be able to download a pic and watch it on PSP without a disc.

14696  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Opera Web Browser add-on for DS announced (and W11 WIFI!) on: February 15, 2006, 03:16:39 PM
the ps2 has had a web browser (an official one at that) in Japan for who knows how long, yet it's never seen the light of day in the U.S.

Am I missing something here?  I browse on the PSP all the time.
14697  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wait a sec, did I read that right? Getting Up got an 8.7.... on: February 15, 2006, 04:37:29 AM
I've been looking forward to this for a while, actually.

All the previews seemed more positive than just the usual preview hype.  The cell game was very good.

I've noticed a lot of pre-release backlash recently, and that's what suprised me.  This game looked good from the beginning.

It may be that I have no idea who Mark Ecko is.  Maybe that's where the negative vibe is coming from.
14698  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 hacked! on: February 14, 2006, 06:32:22 AM
Yeah, moving over your Xbox 1 saves is neat and all, but when the Backwards Compatibility is next to crap (see how poor Fable and Ninja Gaiden Black play for two good examples), why would you want to do so in the first place?

I guess 'cause I assume they will eventually get it right.  But for me, if I can't move my saves, I'm not going to be playing Ninja Gaiden Black or Fable on the 360 anyway, because I sure as hell am not going through all of that again.  But the problem is, I have a hard time continuing to play on the Xbox because I know it could look better and be played with a wireless controller (and I'm holding out hope that I'll be able to move my saves, but maybe someday I will just start over, but I know I won't...damnit, there I go again).  So, they wind up just collecting dust.

Also, I'm going to be avoiding Black and Getting Up, two games I was very much looking anticipating, because I don't want to get started on them then have to start over when they do become BC.  But if I knew I'd be able to move my saves, I'd buy them right away and start playing immediately.  This'll go for future Xbox releases, too.

14700  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 hacked! on: February 13, 2006, 06:43:48 PM
Moving old Xbox saves has been my number one complaint with backwards compatibility (even over number of titles available).

I had heard about this hack coming, and I'm very excited.  However, my fear is that it will somehow be illegal or void the warranty.

On the other hand, my hope is that MS will make it legal themselves.

On the other other hand, my fear is that they will instead focus on making this hack not work.  Actually, that's not so much a fear as a certainty.

On the fourth hand, maybe MS will see that there is a need for this, make the hack not work, but allow moving old Xbox saves.

I go through this with everything.  Is it any wonder why I don't sleep at night?

14702  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DOA4 patch...any word? on: February 11, 2006, 04:13:12 AM
So, I stopped playing DOA4 after hearing about the bug that erased all your progress.  Any word on that getting fixed?  I actually had all my progress erased in COD2, so I know how much that sucks, but that got patched, so I was able to start playing again.  Be nice to go back to getting my ass kicked soon.

14704  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chibi Robo on: February 09, 2006, 07:06:11 PM
How much do I love this game?!

As always, the test of a game that hits me just right is how long I dedicate to playing.  I played this thing last night for 4 or 5 hours, when I had promised myself just to give it a look-see and try to get back into San Andreas (a little bored with the 360, so trying to get back to Xbox games that I'm too far into to start over on the 360, should they become BC [let me move my saves, damnit!]).  Then today, promising myself to just find the giga-charger then get into San Andreas, I've played for another 2 hours.  I guess I'm addicted.

Why do I love it?

Personality, no question.  All the little things add up.  I love the music when I clean things with the toothbrush.  I love that Chibi's footsteps are musical and they change depending on where he's walking.  I love love love that Redcrest superhero guy and that I can get 25 happy points just by going on a quick patrol with him everynight.  I love Plankbeard and the Guess -Which-Eye-Will-Open con-artist.  I really love Jenny and her ribbit-speak.  I love that I'm cleaning crap up just to earn happy points and climb in the ratings so I can become Super Chibi, but also so I can get the next battery upgrade.

The pacing of the game is just perfect to me.  It inspires me to keep playing, just to complete the next goal, but another goal comes up that makes me want to keep going.  I was worried when I heard about the day/night cycle that there was going to be a time pressure thing like with Pikmin, but no.  You play at your own pace.  I bought a time upgrade for a pittance that gives me ample time in a cycle to get nearly everything done that I need to.  But if it feels like to much, I can pay another pittance to speed things up again.

There are collectables, but most of them are random money/happy-givers.  For the permanent ones, however, if you're like me and are addicted to finding everything, there's a tally on the map screen for the number of Chibi doors in a room.  That'll be fun knocking off.  Finding the frog rings for Jenny is a lot of fun, too.

I wish the graphics were a little more up to date, but they're still charming and get the job done.  And if you don't like typical Nintendo babble-speak,  you'll have a hard time with this, but I find it amusing (however, it's not amusing that you can't speed through the dialogue).

Anyway, I love this game.  For me, it was worth the $50, but I don't think I could recommend that price for everyone.  I was expecting it to be $30, though even at $40 I would give it a look.  Renting is a good idea because it may not click with everyone the way it has with me.  It really has with me.

14708  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Black Demo on: February 08, 2006, 05:22:27 AM
Um, now this is really bizarre! I just got my OXM yesterday - the cover says there's a Black playable demo (funny comment, Purge, btw!)... but there is none on the disc. No title, no choice, no nuthin'... It simply does not show up anywhere on the disc.

Um, mytocles, did you put it in an XBox or a 360?
14709  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Full Auto Scorched for a 5.5 in OXM on: February 06, 2006, 10:17:57 PM
I got my hopes up again when someone involved with the game started talking about how old the build was in the demo, but it really soured me.

Of course, the optimist in me is hoping the review is based on a non-release version of the game (the demo, perhaps?), but I can't imagine OXM not wanting to push every single 360 game as much as possible, while still being honest...
14710  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Megaman Maverick Hunter X - do I suck so bad? on: February 03, 2006, 05:28:54 AM
Some of the reviews I've read have talked about Megaman Maverick Hunter X being on the easy side, so I popped it in, thinking I might blow through the game in the 4 or so hours they say it takes to play (rest easy, though, you can play through as the other guy, whathisname, with different cut scenes and weapons and stuff).  An hour later, I still haven't cleared the first level.  Now, unless there're only four levels, I think this might take me a little longer.

Is it just me?  Do I just suck?  I get frustrated playing the Capcom or Sega games because I'm constantly being awarded a C grade.  I've learned to just accept that grade and move on, thinking that the higher grades are for the kids who spend hours memorizing the levels so they can get those high grades (but come on, give me a B-, at least).

I realize what I'm supposed to do in that first level.  I can get to the boss with very little health loss, but then he hops all over the place and I can't dash yet and I have to hold the jump button down just the right amount and fire at just the right time.  And I'm thinking the whole time:  This is an introductory level.  It's just going to get harder.

I have this suspicion that everyone is going to post a litany of "That level was easy.  You do suck" messages.  Please keep in mind that I recently got spanked in just such a manner by Mr. Merrit, so be kind...
14711  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Amped 3- kitty glitter on: February 02, 2006, 09:32:08 PM
Huh.  Those, I have no problem with at all.  Gold first time, every time.  Pushover.

Though that's actually true, I hope that I've made you feel as lame as you made me feel, Rob.

I think we can all agree, though, that the ad for Cinco de Mayo (and their other condiments Cinco de Ketchup and Cinco de Mustard) is funny stuff.  Me Gusta!
14712  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Amped 3- kitty glitter on: January 30, 2006, 10:04:45 PM
Actually, there is still some 2-player multiplayer in there (played with the wife over the weekend), but it's very limited and so-so fun.  Just look for icons on the mountain with two people inside.  Basically, it's crash mode for two.
14713  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Amped 3- kitty glitter on: January 30, 2006, 06:52:45 PM
Who the hell designed the Kitty Glitter objectives for Amped 3?  Take an imprecise mode of transport like a snowboard and set up some objectives that require precision turning.  Some of the most frustrating gameplay I've ever experienced.  And I'm only on the second mountain.  I can only imagine it'll get worse.  The rest of the game is a lot of fun, though, so I guess I'll try to get gold and silver on all the other events and settle for bronze or nothing on these.  Grrr.
14714  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Full Auto demo on Live on: January 26, 2006, 05:20:43 AM
Well, I played it on the OXM disc and now again downloaded from Live, and I have yet to place above 7th.  Usually it's 8th, but one time I killed my rival by accident.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing.  I'd like to like this game.

By the way, it seems to be the same demo as the one from OXM, with no improvements (framerate is still all over the place, and I'm still placing 8th [except once]).
