14681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Can't believe I am saying this, Red Steel ain't so bad on: December 13, 2006, 04:15:38 AM
Agreed.  Not really sure why all the intense hate.  I guess it's for the missed potential.  This is not how an FPS should/will work on the Wii, but it works for now and is letting me see the possibilities to come.

The presentation of the story is pretty bad, I will say, but the story itself is fine.

Mostly, though, I keep coming back to it, which is saying something, certainly.

Holy shit to me that would be pretty earth rattling here too. I can't imagine them doing this without some sort of payoff.

Well, the payoff is lowered developmental costs on the system with the largest install base. Pretty much guaranteed win for them. They can make their game and make more money on it. Not a tough decision. Why wait to see if the Wii will have the install base when you can go DS and get all their bases covered.

here's the IGN article...

Yeah, when you see the numbers that DS games put up, it's amazing how profitable sometihng like this will be.  Animal Crossing DS obviously cost a helluva lot less to develop than FFXII, but it's outsold FFXII there.  Same applies to Brain Training and the like.  DQ9 on the DS will be an absolute monster over there.

Another nice bonus- they are aiming to have DQ9 out next year.

But FFXII costs twice as much.  None the less, I have no doubt they've crunched the numbers and have decided the DS is the $mart way to go.

I'll be doing Elebits and Super Swing Golf.  Probably Metal Slug, too.  I've been hearing good things about Far Cry Wii, but I'm not playing through the same game yet again (I had Xbox and 360 versions).  I'm waiting for reviews on Star Trek: Legacy.

I got Bonk and Ecco and Ristar (I like platformers) and F-Zero, which was a mistake for me.

Form the ones coming soon, I'm looking forward to Toe Jam & Earl and Donkey Kong Country (I like platformers) and maybe Dungeon Explorer and Gunstar Heroes.  And if Monday brings Alien Crush, then that too.

For the folks who got Bomberman '93.  Are you just playing multiplayer?  How is the single player side of it?  Useless or a little fun?
14687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bomberman Land Touch! on: December 09, 2006, 03:56:11 AM
IGN gives it an 8.5 and says:
Closing Comments
It's no secret that Hudson's Bomberman has had some wild ups and downs in its 20 year history, easily hitting its lowest point earlier this year with one of the worst productions yet in the form of Xbox 360's terrible Bomberman: Act Zero. Bomberman Land Touch! may seem a little scary since it's one of those "spin off" designs that run the risk of missing the mark, but this one's really, really good. The adventure has a lot of fun little challenges in its goofy and quirky design, and the Battle Pack -- Bomberman's reason for being -- is a great version of last year's Bomberman DS with solid local and online support. If you really want to push the Nintendo DS system's multiplayer function, this one will truly get your DS gang together.

By the way, I recently finished the game and had a blast the whole way through.

I was rooting through some old t-shirts today and found one for Forsaken.  Who cares, but it occurred to me: How great would it be to revive the Descent series on the Wii?  What made Descent fun was the relatively new experience of moving your ship in full 3D with the mouse.  Imagine that with a Wii controller.  YES!

The reviews haven't been kind (58% average on Game Rankings), but some comments on other boards have given me hope that Rampage: Total Destruction for the Wii is actually a fun party game.  Those comments come from strangers, however, and I trust people here more.  So, has anyone tried it and what's the verdict?

My first gripe (I've had the game 2 days) is regarding the mine sequence in the first mission.

In the context of what happened (without spoiling anything), it still doesn't make sense to me that I still have the weapon that I do.  And it's silencer.

But ok.

That's not my gripe.  I just find it a bit..odd.

My gripe is that for that sequence, you pretty much need to just keep going by trial and error until you know where each of the bad guys will be until the next checkpoint.  You can't stealth it (I tried).  You can't rambo it (I tried).  You pretty much have to know where the guys will be and then be prepared to shoot them immediately.  Even in the darkness, they have exceptional aim.  Perhaps they have access to some night-vision/thermal equipment that I was not privy to.

I'd say it took me at least 15 tries to get through that one sequence.

In doing so, I got the pistoleer achievement (150 kills by pistol).  That just seems ridiculous.

I'm spec ops.  I have all kinds of cool equipment at my disposal.  All I wanted was to be able to see the guys and be able to shoot from cover.  Actually, the best trick was to get shot just a little, and the darkness would lift and you could see where the guy was and fire back quickly.  But if you weren't quick're starting over again.

After that one section, even though you still had the same limitations, the rest of the level was a cakewalk.  Access to weapons with scopes and automatic fire makes a world of difference.

I agree with you, Don.  I had to replay that sequence several times, with my knowledge of what was coming allowing me to get a little further the next time.  Of course, I had a similar issue with the sequence just before that.  What's bugging me more than anything is the sudden loss of save anywhere.  The Clancy games were finally making the right steps in that arena, IMO, and now between GRAW and R6, they've stepped back.  I died in stupid ways right before getting to the mine and had to replay the whole level again.  And the level was just long enough to make that supremely annoying.

...and this is from someone who thought the single-player e3 demo was pretty meh.  The MP demo is impressive!  I mean, ultimately, it feels like the SP demo, this is true, but there's just some intangible thing going on.  I'm not entirely sure what it is.  Each weapon has real pop, using the grappling hook-thing is fun and the graphics run smooth and look great.

And when I load up the single-player demo, I find myself having more fun than I had before the MP demo.  Kudos to a good multiplayer demo, Capcom.

So, even if you didn't particularily care for the single-player demo, give the Lost Planet MP demo a shot.  I'm glad I did!

I had the exact opposite reaction.  I loved the SP demo, but was underwhelmed by the MP one.  It may be that I was hoping for another map or that I didn't play until Sunday, after everyone had a few days with it, leaving me behind, but I found it confusing and frustrating.

I've had my eye on this game, too, as I've been hearing the control is good.

My biggest question is how much of a story rehash will this be?  I've heard it's a new tale, but I've also heard there are 3 new maps.  That doesn't scream new to me.  I don't want to play through the game again.  If it's all new, I'm in.

Sometimes it is...not long ago there was a trade offer that gave an extra 20 bucks on system trade-ins, including GC.
That would have brought it to $45, which isn't bad at all.
Especially this time of year, you never know what wackiness might ensue, so keep your ears and eyes open.

However, mine has the broadband adapter and the GBA player (the latter add-on is selling for a lot more than the former, oddly), so I can e-bay/ it for a lot more than that.
14702  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bomberman Land Touch! on: November 18, 2006, 11:36:23 PM
Actually, there is classic bomberman.  It's an extra feature (seems to be full-featured, too), just not the main focus of the main game.

Really, this game is perfectly paced, if a little on the easy side.  There has been one mini game that I hate, so far (knocking bombs off of a platform).  Otherwise, all good.  The game says I've put in twenty hours so far, but it doesn't feel like it.  It's great for pick up and play sessions.

Actually, most of the reviews I've seen have talked about the Wii controls adding to the experience tremendously.  This from IGN:
The experience is made better and not worse on Wii. The Wii remote and nunchuk add accuracy and speed to exploration and combat for a heightened sense of immersion. While the game has just about everything going for it, including improved controls...

Zelda notwithstanding, my interest in the wii was pretty low to begin with. The launch line for the wii (and PS3 as well) is just plain weak IMHO. I hope something halfway decent comes out soon.

The rest of the Wii lineup has been reviewed fairly well. Rayman, Call of Duty3, Trauma Center, Monkey Ball, Tony Hawk, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Madden 07, are all respectable 80%-ish games. Up until Red Steel, the low scores were for Excite Truck and Wii Sports, which were 70%-ish. I'd say that's a strong, well rounded launch lineup.

Agreed.  However, I'm switching my pre-orders for Red Steel and Excite Truck to Monkey Ball and Trauma Center (I was planning on getting Trauma Center anyway, but I figured I wouldn't have to worry about it selling out).

And it's not even Gerstmann...

5.5.  Yipes!

I've been thinking the lack of reviews or comments on the game was troubling.

From the comments:

Red Steel isn't completely devoid of merit, but it's a half-baked, buggy game that feels rushed and poorly executed. There's a good concept in here somewhere, as a swords-and-guns shooter pitting you against yakuza villains certainly seems like it could be very exciting. However, the experience itself hardly fulfills any of the promises behind it. So if you're looking for an exciting new way to simulate gunning or cutting lots of dudes down using the Wii Remote, you'd best keep looking.

Of course, if you have Wi-Fi capability, odds are that you'll have ways of doing all of this without the Wii.

14712  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bomberman Land Touch! on: November 16, 2006, 09:53:56 PM
I don't have a lot of time to post impressions right now, but I must strongly recommend Bomberman Land Touch for the DS.  I wasn't expecting a lot, but man is it entertaining and addictive.  So far, I've yet to see "classic" Bomberman play, but the game is in the classic style, at least.  It's a series of mini games, tied together by a visit to a pirate theme park with playing card areas that open up once you collect enough symbols (clubs, hearts, etc).  You can also collect coins to gain new bombs.  There are items to find that open up new areas, too (a mining hat with a light is the only way to get into the cave areas, for example).  It all moves at a pretty fast pace-not that you're rushed, it's just the mini games are pretty short and opening new areas happens fairly quickly.  I know this may sound like it's been done before, and maybe it has, but when the ingredients come together well, it still works.  If you're thinking about this one, give it a go.  It's my new addiction.

I predict this will be the norm for Wii.  A couple of blockbusters, then a shitton of poor low grade titles.

I mentioned last year that I feared all of the developers will be treating the controller gimmick as the next "Lens Flare" or "Bloom", and going hog wild with it, while not paying much attention to game content and gameplay.  Thus was my fear.

Ah, yes, because 1 launch title is a perfect representation of the entire run of the system, present and future...

And wasn't there a similar prediction when the DS came out?
