14481  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Any Asus G1 Impressions?? (or A8Js) on: March 20, 2007, 03:00:38 PM
I've moved from a Dell or Alienware machine to thinking strongly about the Asus G1.  It seems to be the best 15" laptop out there, in the happy middle ground between power and portability.  I'm wondering if anyone has one and what their impressions are.  Any opinions will help.  Thanks.

14482  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Dell (or Alienware) laptop advice needed on: March 19, 2007, 11:39:54 PM
Well, my wife convinced me I needed to get a 15", so I'm heavily leaning to the Asus G1.  Has anyone had experience with that one?

Also, I may want to wait for a DX10 laptop, but I have a feeling we won't see them for several months and they'll be only in the 17" models and blow through batteries.  Has anyone heard anything about these?

I love how the game is more freeform than PoP and Splinter Cell.  The whole free running-like aspects are just cool.

Wow... that looks like the kind of game we wished "Hitman" would be.

These are actually the only things making me nervous.  The Hitman series is a little too freeform, IMO.  It's hard to get a handle on what to do in a lot of missions, and it becomes very trial and error, but that means replaying the whole level again.  Hitman is a game that I want to like, and I always get the newest version, but then I get frustrated and stop playing a few levels in.

That said, Sands of Time is one of my all time favorites, and I love the Thief series, too (which I'm hoping this'll be closer to than Hitman).  So, don't get me wrong, I am in like sin, and I trust the dev team, and I'm sure this game'll be fantastic, but I had to mention my grain of salt.
14485  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (3/19) on: March 19, 2007, 01:54:02 PM
360:
Armored Core 4 Waiting on reviews
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Live Arcade) Yes
Earth Defense Force 2017 Waiting on reviews
Virtua Tennis 3 Waiting on reviews and waiting for my dead 360 to return from the grave, so I can try the demo

Wii:
Cooking Mama: Cook Off Yes
Kororinpa: Marble Mania Probably
Wing Island Reviews so far have been deadly, but if the major sites or people here think differently, I could be swayed...if it's something my three year old can do, then I'll also be in

DS:
Custom Robo Arena Waiting on reviews
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of Warlords Yes
Steel Horizon Waiting on reviews
Theme Park Maybe

Ugh, this'll be a rough week made even rougher by waiting for my 360.  Hopefully it comes back before Shimmering Isles arrives.  The sad thing is that even though there are a lot of games I'm getting, none of them has me really excited.

So, let me ask this: What's the best 15" that anyone has found.  The ones I've seen have had a meh screen and graphics card, but I've only just started looking.  I'd prefer a nice 15" to a kick-ass 17" anyway, but I would like something like the 7900 GS, graphically (I've given up on getting the GTX card).  This has been very helpful so far.  Can anyone find me the perfect laptop?
14488  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Dell (or Alienware) laptop advice needed on: March 16, 2007, 11:43:02 PM
Adding to my frustration, my wife has informed me that she would really prefer a 15".  Is everyone using 17"?  Do you travel with them?  How about 15"?  Is there a decent one?

Another recent example is the really well done Diddy Kong Racing
which got lousy reviews and deserved much better.

I was thinking the same thing until I got to the first trace race (or whatever it's really called).  The third boss race where you have to draw a line over a top-down perspective to get your racer to follow.  Feels like it should be like Kirby Canvas Curse, but it's not.  It's virtually unplayable.

Easy enough to do.  The interface isn't the greatest.  I'm constantly hitting A to select an option, only to move on to the next screen.

By the way, has anyone figured out how to get different eyebrows??  I haven't seen an option to change them anywhere.

I have to get a laptop, and I'd prefer a Dell.

I like the specs of the M1710.  The problem is, my wife is not going to like the way the XPS machines look, but I want to get the 512MB Nvidia card in there (the 7950), but I may have to go with the 7900, 256MB card just for pricing.

The Inspirons only have a 256MB 7300, and their screen isn't the WUXGA.  It's WSXGA+ and 15.4", though I don't know if I need a 17" screen.  Also, it only runs at a max speed of 2Ghz, which is slower than my current desktop.

I'm looking to get a new desktop down the road, so this doesn't have to be a powerhouse, but I do want it to run things like Company of Heroes or even Crysis okay.  Any suggestions?

Sorry for the semi-repost, but there was no response in the other thread, so I started a new one.

The base warranty was extended from 90 days to a year from purchase (automatically - no effort required on your part).

You should just be able to call 1-800-4MY-XBOX.

Year after purchase, which would have been last November.  Great, I'm screwed.
14495  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Friend Codes To Be Title Specific on: March 15, 2007, 03:00:59 PM
I seriously don't understand this at all.  Nintendo has said they were using a wait and see approach to find out what worked, what people responded well to, infrastructure-wise.  They've seen that.  And they chose to go in a totally other direction and ignore all beneficial functionality.  I know the Xbox and 360 haven't been the biggest hits in the home base of Big N, but that doesn't mean you should ignore the things that have worked.  Or are the Japanese somehow really against Xbox Live and like the idea of jumping through hoops to play games online?

No, there is a way.  You select "Sort" from the options at the bottom of the screen.  Then you can select a specific manufacturer.  You can also select locked or unlocked, which is what I usually do.  Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to select everything from a specific maker, so you have to go into shirts, then pants, etc.

As for my backswing into a shot before you start your downswing problem, others are having the same issue, according to the EA forums.  I switched to one handed, and that seemed to fix it, but I just had it happen again three times on a single hole.  It's extremely frustrating.

How did that extended warranty thing work?  Was that automatic or was I supposed to do something?

Well, I picked up Tiger Woods 07 for the Wii.  Man, it looks yucky, but I wasn't expecting much graphically, so who cares.

Unfortunately, I've got some kind of problem with the swing controls.  It tends to take a weak swing on my backswing, and I have no idea why it's happening.  Incredibly frustrating, to say the least.

I'd love to hear other impressions of the game, because I'm having a hard time getting past this issue (it happened twice on the first hole in the Tiger Challenge).  If anyone has seen an explanation for the issue I'm having, I'd love to hear that, too.

14505  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games You Can't Stop Playing on: March 12, 2007, 02:51:36 PM
Gears had that effect for me, as well, though I cooled for a bit and just finished the single player two nights ago.  I was hooked for a long time.  Especially on MP, and I'm not usually much of an MP guy.

The combination of Crackdown and the Achievements Reward Challenge (got my 1500 points last night, BTW) had me plow through that game like butter.  I stopped for a bit before the last few baddies, and I'm finding it a little hard to get into again, but not much.  It's just a blast to play.

There's a tendency for me to stop playing a game if I feel like I'm dedicating too much time to it or if I feel like I'm going to finish it.  Frankly, that's ridiculous, but it's a habit I can't shake.  It doesn't help if a new game comes out.

The only game that kept drawing me back straight through to completion was Oblivion.  Even KOTOR, which I also plowed through, got some downtime, but any time I tried something new during Oblivion, it quickly got sent to the back burner.  It helped that not a lot was coming out for the 360 at the time, but still.

14507  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 Impressions on: March 09, 2007, 03:58:38 PM
I found the little I've played with the single player to be an improvement in nearly every way over GRAW 1 (still would like to save anywhere, though- I had a lockup during one of the last tutorials and was pissed that I had to start the whole thing over- at least the levels seem a little shorter).  The team-mate AI is pretty damn good, fixing probably the biggest problem over all.  And I'm amazed at how impressed I can still be by next-genniness in the graphics.

I didn't love the MP demo, but I jumped into a couple of games last night online and had a great time (even got a team leader achievement, which could only be accomplished this early into the game's release).  I'm bummed that you can't lock into a wall, but I understand why.  Still, that led to a lot of frustration after coming off of the single player.

Overall, I'm loving it more than I thought I would.

I'm a little worried about the camera, too, but I'm more worried that there will not be a lot of variety in the worlds.  It seems to be a lot of running around with just black space in the background.  There was one scene with a reddish-pink background that gave me hope, but otherwise this just feels like those annoying block levels from Sunshine over and over again.

I am looking more forward to the Paper Mario platformer than this, but I am still interested, at least.

A true killer app. Something like what Mario 64 did for the N64, or Wii Sports on the Wii.

Um... you mean Zelda for the Wii, right?  Wii Sports was a pack in that a lot of gamers didn't even know existed.

gellar

I agree with Farscry.  Wii Sports may be a pack-in but it's really what gets the most buzz.  My mom actually wants a Wii because of it!

All I know is that Conan played Serena Williams in Wii Tennis on his show.  For the "casual" gamer, I think Wii Sports would be considered a killer app.

Man, I must be in the minority then.  I seriously didn't even know this game existed until after launch.

gellar

Yup. You're in the minority. icon_biggrin All the promo stuff I saw/read leading up to the Wii launch was focused mostly on Wii Sports, not Zelda. And it's Wii Sports that's sold the system to the mainstream masses who are still buying them up faster than the shelves can be stocked.

Nintendo's gamble paid off, in the short run at least, by appealing to a new gaming demographic. The "hardcore" gaming audience generally dislikes the Wii, writing it off as a puny little sibling to the 360/PS3.  That's the audience that Nintendo didn't bother trying to capture, because there's already two solid platforms vying for that audience. They went for a different audience, and so far it's working pretty well (much like with the DS). Obviously, this is a first for the gaming market since the introduction of the original NES (basically the same gamble in a different era) and it remains to be seen how successful they'll be in the long run.

Heck, I keep failing to see anything to really draw me into buying a Wii myself; there's nothing in the next few months that's a killer app on the system for me personally, and my late spring purchase is looking more and more like it's going to be delayed into a holiday season purchase, and even that's iffy. It's wild how much my excitement waned from my "day one purchase!" claims after E3 last year into pretty much no excitement for the system currently. Right now, the 360, PC, DS, and PS2 provide more gaming than I could possibly ask for, and the Wii just doesn't offer anything I absolutely must have that I can't get elsewhere yet. I even picked up Twilight Princess on the Cube so I wouldn't need to grab the Wii to play it.

One big issue I see for the Wii is that third party games are still going for hardcore gamers.  The casual fan is not going to enjoy SSX Blur much, for example.  Too frustrating.

Did anyone else have a tough time getting in an online battle?  I kept getting a message that the Worms server was not available or the game was not available any more.  I tried hosting a game and the console froze on me.  The next time I was in the lobby we waited for a long time and kept getting no response from the host.  Another guy said that when he tried to host the console locked, so we figured it had happened again.  I only got to play one game last night.  I did have a blast because even though I suck, most everyone else did, too.  And the few who didn't had some unlucky things happen.  Still, I know I won't be able to devote time to it like others and the fun of getting spanked repeatedly is going to wane.

Looks like Sims crossed with Second Life.  Not really my thing but I can imagine there is probably a market for this type of thing out there based on how well those two have done.

Man, as I was watching them talk about stuff like movie theaters that you go to where you can download movies and the chatroom stuff and I honestly couldn't help but think "Is there a way to skip all that BS and just do it through a menu fast?"  The metaverse was a cool idea in Snow Crash, but I want a console to play games.  Even when I go to bring up the Xbox interface thing to check out someone's Achievements I feel like it's slower than it should be.  Now I have to load a whole world and find my friend's house?

Yeah, that's how I feel.  The Live interface is almost too much for me- I want to turn on my console and play games, not hang out in an interface.  I can't imagine that Sony won't put some form of shortcuts in there though, at least for matchmaking and the like.

But, again, enough people seem to enjoy this stuff in the Sims and Second Life that there is clearly a market for people who do want to "hang out" in some abstract virtual realm.

Yeah, but Sims Online was a major, major failure.  And this feels like less of the same, to me.  Maybe it'll be cool, but they have to get load time down to nothing and give people a reason to want to visit other people's home spaces.  I mean, sure I'd love to show off my trophies, but how much would I care about seeing other peoples?

Worms is a possibility.  I remember playing the original Worms and having fun with it way back when.  I just wonder if it will hold up with the passage of time.  In any event, I'll at least check out the demo version.
I am a little wierded out we havent seen any reviews yet on GRAW 2 since it releases today, but barring any terrible news about the SP campaign I am still in. I am also seriously considering Motorstorm for instant purchase.
