And the guy kept talking about how the developers had come up with these great new ideas!  I mean, it was remarkably similar.  Even the castle on the hill looked the same.  Ridiculous!

None the less, I am looking forward to this game.  You can never have enough good WWII shooters, IMO.

Well, damn.  That'd do it for me, but I don't really want to play through the whole rest of the game again, much as I loved it.  Maybe if I just skip the cig collecting this time (and lose the achievement am I nuts?).

According to Midway's Steve Allison new IP isn't profitable:

Quote
“According to our numbers, the actual success rate of new IP over the past four years is just seven percent. In other words, 93 percent of new IP fails in the marketplace. So while the 90-plus review scores and armfuls of awards create the perception that titles like Psychonauts, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami and other great pieces of work were big successes, the truth is that they were big financial disappointments and money losers.”

And the Sun rises in the east too. Seriously(and this is directed at the Midway guy) could he be more obvious? How many new TV shows come out every year and then get canceled? Yet they keep coming because they have to replace the old stuff eventually. Most new IP's in any media will fail, but the ones that do can make money for a long time and be very profitable. Thats the whole point. Keep trying till you hit the jackpot or something close to it.

Yeah, but, apart from the original Star Trek redos (and how well are those doing, anyway?), they can't really just rehash successful shows like you can in the VG Industry.  But when someone does "hit the jackpot" with a new IP, every one else essentially tries to rehash it with a newer coat of paint.  Heroes was a big success this year.  Care to guess how many Sci-Fi related shows are hitting the major nets next year?

As for this Riddick thing, I loved the first.  If there's a significant change to gameplay I'd jump at the new one, but by that I mean 30% plus of new gameplay.  And a multiplayer component won't do it for me (though it would certainly help in most people's cases, I think).  This is my official opinion.  Unofficially, I'll probably reluctantly cave and buy the damn thing anyway.

After you clear a level, do the monsters respawn (in other words, if I want to get back to level 5, do I have to keep fighting monsters from levels 1 - 4 to do it)?  Also, do monsters respawn before you clear a level?  Usually in these games, I like to spend some time cranking my stats before continuing, just to make the game a little easier.  I'm wondering if that's even possible for this.

Also, has anyone seen a strategy guide in stores?

This really is a stellar game, totally in the vein of Ruins of MYth Drannor, Dungeon Master SNES, and the whole Bards Tale series. Its hard as hell, but plays the same and the skills add tons of depth. I also enjoy that the loot you find in dungeons unlocks new tiers of items at the store, forcing you to level up your guys and upgrade yourselves before you progress, giving you a real feeling of accomplishment, past the whole "mapping" an entire dungeon.

This makes me miss Lands of Lore......

Oh, now, see I loved Lands of Lore.  Now the pendulum is swinging...

I'm still shaking the die, myself.  Some things about this game appeal to me greatly (the mapping, which I guess is fairly easy to do, you just have to do it), the fact that it's OG.  Some things are keeping me away (the difficulty, the strategizing about so much minutiae, actually needing to use items and revive your characters).  I have a fear that my patience will not be able to take all the negative issues.

Well, I was going to get the re-envisioning on the PS2, but I'll wait for the Wii version now so I can get some comparisons with the controls. Hopefully, doubtfully though, they will make the engine run even better on the Wii.

Some notes from the interview, Eidos was late getting the dev kits ( which probably is why we are getting announcements later than we'd like ) . Also acknowledge that this is another PS2 port, but it could still be a pretty cool thing with the wii-controls.

I hope they give us an option to play with standard controls.  And that the graphics are at least as good as the PS2, and, hopefully, better.

Wow, that looks incredible.  I love when gaming surprises like this come out of nowhere!

I need to talk to Ubisoft to see what I'm allowed to say.  Let's just say that these few screenshots don't tell the whole tale of what has been rebuilt...

Some site (I don't remember who) already spilled that they've added some levels and weapons.  Maybe there's more?  (Maybe even...gasp...multiplayer??)

When I first heard they were releasing PoP on XBLA, I reluctantly said I would pass.  Much as I love the game, I've played it enough.  I certainly don't need to buy it again.  Or at least, I didn't.  That theory just went the hell out the window.  Damn, that looks amazing.

14492  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Blacksite: Area 51 demo up on: May 12, 2007, 04:12:36 AM
I played this tonight.  It's very short.  Way too short.  None the less, I'm pretty impressed.  Those Unreal 3 graphics are looking pretty damn good.  I like the simplified Rainbow 6-esque squad control.  I wish the weapons felt like they were doing a little more damage.  The aliens don't seem to react to getting hit much until they fall down.  The variety of bad guys is pretty great, though.
Spoiler for Hiden:
It took me a while to figure out that the aliens on the other side of the highway were well-armored up top and needed to be hit in the legs. Also, when the one at the beginning fell and part of him kept coming...it's not like it hasn't been done before, but it was done effectively.  I was surprised.
The ending was impressive, too.  I certainly wanted to see what happens next.  I enjoyed the last game and the arcade game at the time.  This is nothing like either of them.  This game has grown up.

She complains about amount of time I spend playing on the 360.
She got annoyed when I talked about GH2 weeks before it came out.
She got annoyed again when I showed up at home with GH2 the night it came out.
She got even more annoyed when I told her how much it cost.
She saw me playing GH2 within 30 minutes of getting home and was rolling her eyes at the nerd pretending to be a rock star.

I forced her to play GH2.   She's naturally better than I am.   She loves playing the game.   She can't stop.  We've had company at the house and she's pulled out the game to have them play.  She'd prefer to spend Mother's Day at our house so we could play the game.  She even got her Dad (an accomplished musician) to play it.

Ordered 2nd Guitar last week to get my playing time in.  Played Co-op tonight with her.   It's going to be a nightly event.  It's the first video game we ever actually played together where we aren't competing against each other.

Quote
So, the latest shipments to hit stores are in new, better boxes with a printed two-piece box with a top lid that lifts off rather than the first shipment one with a plain white box that slid out of the printed cover.

Also, I definitely noticed a big difference in the buttons. The first wave guitars I have have buttons that feel stiff with less play that click loudly. I had to return a couple of these because of the buttons sticking. They still tend to get caught or stick if I press them near the edges. A guitar from the new boxes I tried has buttons that don't stick no matter from what position/angle I hit them from and are more '"spongy" with more play and much quieter.

So, pretty frustrating that a lot of customers are stuck with crappy first-run guitars, especially those who bought them directly from RedOctane whose customer service is abominable/nonexistent and refuse to admit they have issues.

No way I'm ordering direct again.

Anyone else have thoughts on the second-run guitars?

I'm still waiting for a second non-bundle guitar.

I'm running low on space already, too.  I bought a big SD card, so I could put a bunch of VC games from there.  Unfortunately, the SD card only works for music and pics.  You can store games there, but you can't play them.  Then you have to restore them if you want to play again.  Eventually, I'm sure I'll have to do this, but it sure is frustrating to have all this space and not be able to use it.  Also, what happens if I fill up the pages of Channels?  I was hoping to have a sub-channel called "VC Games" or something, but no luck.

As far as the game goes, Red Faction did this one the PS2 over five years ago. I absolutely love how developers try to take old features, add some new bells and whistles, and call it something new and exciting.

Red Faction was more about destructable environments.  The kind of terraforming they're doing has been around forever, yes, but they're doing new things with it.
14511  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Heatseeker Wii on: May 03, 2007, 03:47:17 PM
Gamespot and IGN came down pretty hard on Heatseeker (5.4 and 5.5), but other sites seemed to like it.  I picked it up for the Wii and played the first set of missions.  It's pretty fun.

Control is great, but it takes just a little while to get used to it (every once in a while, I want to pull up with the nunchuck, but that controls your speed).

I've only played the arcade setting, and it's fast and furious, but a little on the easy side, as far as targeting and firing goes.  The challenge comes in getting to the incoming bandits before they can take out something at the base.

There are a ton of things to unlock, it seems, and not just videos.  Better planes and weapons, too.

The missions are on the long side, and a lot of them seemed to be of the "Here comes another wave, take 'em out" variety, but there's something very entertaining about doing just that.  It's kind of like the waves of enemies in Earth Defense Force, but not as manic or overwhelming.

The graphics seem to be a big complaint for the reviewers.  They've been called PS2 launch-era quality.  That's ridiculous.  It's not a 360 or PS3 game, for sure, but it's not that bad.  The graphics are better than a lot of the 1st round of Wii games, but clearly not as good as they should be.  They are colorful, and there's a lot of pretty sunlight glaring going on, but some of the plane and ship details are turned down.

Anyway, all told, this game is probably not worth the $50 price tag, but when you see it for $30, give it a go.

I like the idea of using the terraforming to get to new areas.  As long as it's not all linear choices.

I wish the vid showed someone using terraforming on you.  I'd like to see how that works.

I think it's more likely that the Japanese as bad guys lead to a morally gray area that you don't get mowing down Nazis.

Howzat? They were every bit as evil and twisted as the nazis.

Yeah, I was pretty sure WWII era Japan had a terrible reputation, which is part of the reason they have bad relations with vietnam and china.  Not something I've ever studied so I'm willing to be wrong on that, but...

No, you're not wrong. The WWII museum in New Orleans has an entire section devoted to the Pacific theater and the sheer brutality of it, and massive atrocities committed, will have you in tears by the time you leave.

I think the moral grey area comes in with the atomic bomb thing.  And it's easy to separate modern Germans from Nazis.  The Japanese are still the Japanese.  It's a perception thing whether it's true or not.
