The video led me to believe it's very much like the arcade game with PGR2... forget the name, and I own it. Tongue I rarely play any arcade games except SOTN.

Geometry Wars.

It's actually not like Geometry Wars or its 360 sequel.  I thought it would be, too.  You use the A button to fire.  The right trigger uses the jetpack.  Not sure what, if anything the other buttons do.  Oh, and it seems that on each level you try to build and/or get enough fuel for a rocket to take you to the next stage.

I got my 360 back from MS repair yesterday and downloaded SI.  Went to play today and the thing locks up while loading downloaded content.  Do I need the patch to play?  I didn't get a chance to try load the game last night.  Could that be the problem?

I thought you couldn't play the expansion without the patch (maybe on the PC version only?). I'd try that.

I did try.  And the game locks up.  Looks like I'll have to re-download if it's not associated with the patch.
14486  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MOH: Vanguard Review IGN on: March 27, 2007, 08:38:27 PM
By the way, I picked this up today and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.  The graphics are very nice, for a Wii game.  The control is good, but there are too many things mapped to the nunchuck.  I found myself about facing every time I wanted to reload or duck.  I'm going to use the buttons for those two functions, I think that'll help.

There is replay involved, by the way, in the sense that each level and campaign has medals associated with it.  You'll probably wind up replaying a level to get all of the medals (if you're that type of person).  That said, I blew through the first campaign in under an hour.  And there are, IIRC, five campaigns.  Now, the first one only had two missions.  I'm sure there'll be more in future campaigns.

I've been looking for a good FPS on Wii.  This seems to fit the bill.  Nothing extraordinary, but good and satisfying.  If you liked Red Steel (which I enjoyed for a while, but now find it to be a chore), you'll definitely enjoy this.  It's better in all respects.

Shivering Isles is the only definite for me (though I'm picking up Earth Defense Force and Virtua Tennis 3, too, once my 360 returns from Microsoft on Tuesday).  I'll get Jetpack, if I like the demo.  I will pick up MoH: Vanguard for the Wii if it's the first Wii shooter with good reviews.  And The Settlers is an old favorite, but the reviews have to be good for me to get it.

14494  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone try Wing Island? on: March 23, 2007, 02:43:10 PM
Has anyone tried out Wing Island for the Wii?  I know the reviews have been kinda stinky, but I keep hearing that it's too simple, which might be perfect for my three year old.  She loves playing the Wii, but she isn't very good yet, and I'd love to find something that ups her confidence (though her recent bout with Marble Mania helped).  Can any fun be had in this game?  Will a three year old be able to handle it?
14495  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Dell (or Alienware) laptop advice needed on: March 23, 2007, 02:37:31 PM
I like the way VAIOs look, and I hadn't heard anything bad about them, but none of the reviews were really great, either.  I did look at them briefly, but, IIRC, none of them had any kind of graphics card that I was looking for.  They were all the Intel chip, I think.  Or if they did have a good card, it wasn't new enough.  They are sexy looking though, I'll say that.
14496  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DS] Wario: Master of Disguise... greatest game ever? on: March 22, 2007, 03:28:37 PM
I picked this up based solely on this forum, and I'm enjoying it, though I have yet to get through the first level.  I have had a couple of issues drawing disguises (Wario will bash instead of letting me draw a circle), but I think that'll change once I get used to where I need to draw (don't draw the circle on the head, though that's what I want to do).

My bigger complaint is that I keep going to the boss without the ability I need to defeat him, and there's no way to leave.  I just have to get the stuffing beat out of me or start over at the save point.  But really, should I be allowed up there without whatever the star mode is?   That kind of level design makes me nervous for that rest of the game (Of course, it's entirely possible that I've missed something, and I do have the power to beat him, but it doesn't seem that way).

Still, I do see the potential here and look forward to playing it more.

EDIT TO ADD: And it is entirely possible.  I read a FAQ and saw that I have everything I need.  Not sure why I'm seeing a star icon as a hint, but no matter.  I was actually doing what I'm supposed to do in the battle, but I couldn't tell I was hurting him.

Back to liking this game more now.
14497  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kororinpa: Marble Madness on: March 22, 2007, 03:21:59 PM
I picked up Kororinpa: Marble Madness for the Wii at T R U yesterday.  It's really a fantastic game.

First of all, this is the first game where I feel like I've started to see what the Wii is capable of, graphically (yes, even over Zelda).  It's quite beautiful.  I hope developers look at this as something to strive for instead of just dropping down textures and making things jaggy in ports (I'm looking at you, EA).

The music is fantastic.  It's very relaxing and rich.  The opposite of what you'd expect in these kind of tension-filled games, but I'm really thankful for them.

The control is so much better and more precise than Monkey Ball that it's not even funny.  My three year old actually started picking up the controls intuitively, which she has never been able to consistently do in any Wii game to date (though she does love to try playing everything).  The look of satisfaction in her beaming smile when she got to the end of the second level was really great.  Of course, it took her 10 minutes, but still...

I have heard that the game is going to be over very, very quickly, and that does seem to be the case.  There are, I believe, 50 levels.  And there's no kind of multiplayer to speak of.  You and someone else just try to complete those same 50 levels.  However, each level has a hidden green gem, and I have no doubt those will get quite challenging and require multiple replays to attain.  And trying to get gold cups on all the levels will certainly take some time.  So if you're the type of person who likes going for those type of challenges, I'm sure you'll get plenty of play out of this.

Overall, maybe it's not worth the $40 tag, just for length, but so far it seems to be one of the top games on the system.  Take it with a grain of salt, if you must, 'cause I've only played 5 levels so far, but I'm impressed.
14498  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What the heck is Nintendo thinking? A cook-off Wii game! on: March 22, 2007, 03:10:57 PM
Well, I picked it up yesterday and really enjoyed it.  My daughter did, too.  I'll try it with the wife this weekend.  I'm not sure where the complaints are coming from with the control issues.  The only problem I had was with peeling (potatoes and carrots), but that was also over the top hard on the DS, so I'm used to that (wish they had fixed it, though).  Stirring was a little difficult, but it's just a question of figuring out the rhythm and the overall motion that's needed.  Once that clicked, it was no problem.

My only complaint is that the game could use more of a story mode and a few more party modes.  For both, it's really just looking at a list of recipes and picking one.

Oh, and I love the Japanese lady trying to do the English Mama.  Every time she mangles the word "wonderful," I laugh.

Really, it's a charming game.

So, if anyone is interested, I went ahead with the Asus G1, and I ordered it from a company in CA called Xotic PC.  Not only were they very helpful and knowledgeable (and cool, I might add), but they also upgrade and test the unit on site.  I upped the processor speed to 2.33 Ghz and went with a 7200 RPM 100 gig hard drive (instead of the 5400 160 gig).  I figured all of this tweaking would add a couple of weeks to the order, but they say they'll get it done in 1-3 days (unless there's a problem in the testing).  Amazing.  I'm very psyched to get this new machine next week!

I'm straddling the fence on this one but I might end up taking it back for Virtua Tennis 3.

Well, when you start adding in uber-fans like Team Xbox giving it a very lukewarm 6.2 http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1304/Armored-Core-4/p3/ and 1Up spanking it with a 4.0 http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3143818, if you're like me, you'll be back to wanting to stay away.

Still, I've never played a game in this series, so I'd be curious to know if it's accessible enough for me.  It sounds like the driving force of the game is still customization, and that's always my least favorite part of a mech game.  So who knows?

Hehe that's what I am scared of. My local EB has never offered to go through boxes for me, they always tell me to come back, so I will wait an hour or two more before I head down there. I wonder if Target will carry it, they seem to be quite good for new releases.

This drives me crazy.  None of the stores around me do it.  I just don't get it.  Don't they want the sale?  Don't they want fewer units to have to put on shelves?  When I worked retail, we were psyched to sell new items.

I have to agree with Tilt on this that it's primarily nostalgia tinging reviews for older titles. Hell, I've fallen victim to that myself regarding FFVI on the DS. I still love it, but I'm more experienced now when I play it and as such I've blown through it. I'm sure when I replay SotN I'll find things to bitch about and wonder aloud how I ever enjoyed X. I would actually put Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest ahead of it, more for personal reasons than anything else, followed quickly by Castlevania 3.

Have you replayed Castlevania 2 or 3 recently? If not, how do you know that you aren't aggrandazing those games based on nostalgia? I used to love Castlevania 2 as a kid (though I got stuck at the heart part, I believe); but I went back and played it a month or two ago and it was no where near what I remembered.

I think that was part of the point WBS was making.

Good to know.

I'm also looking at the Asus A8Js, which is only 14" but has the same graphics card.  It has a lower native resolution, so I'm wondering if you get more bang for your buck there.
14508  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What the heck is Nintendo thinking? A cook-off Wii game! on: March 20, 2007, 03:07:32 PM
I think what Nintendo was thinking was that this game worked on the DS (it really was a ton of fun) and that it will work on the Wii.  Kobra raises a good point against it, though.  I'm not sure that the quick hit stuff from the DS will translate as well to the console.  It really boils down to the "party" aspects of it.  My wife and daughter will probably love this game, and if it's like the DS version, I think I will enjoy it quite a bit as well.  However, between this game and Trauma Center, both of which are near ports from their DS counterparts, I don't know that we can call them "new games" like Farscry says.  Hopefully, we're still in launch mode and the innovation is still to come.  None the less, Cooking Mama, while quirky, sure, can't really be called junk.

I've moved from a Dell or Alienware machine to thinking strongly about the Asus G1.  It seems to be the best 15" laptop out there, in the happy middle ground between power and portability.  I'm wondering if anyone has one and what their impressions are.  Any opinions will help.  Thanks.

Also, I may want to wait for a DX10 laptop, but I have a feeling we won't see them for several months and they'll be only in the 17" models and blow through batteries.  Has anyone heard anything about these?

Wow... that looks like the kind of game we wished "Hitman" would be.

These are actually the only things making me nervous.  The Hitman series is a little too freeform, IMO.  It's hard to get a handle on what to do in a lot of missions, and it becomes very trial and error, but that means replaying the whole level again.  Hitman is a game that I want to like, and I always get the newest version, but then I get frustrated and stop playing a few levels in.

That said, Sands of Time is one of my all time favorites, and I love the Thief series, too (which I'm hoping this'll be closer to than Hitman).  So, don't get me wrong, I am in like sin, and I trust the dev team, and I'm sure this game'll be fantastic, but I had to mention my grain of salt.

360:
Armored Core 4 Waiting on reviews
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Live Arcade) Yes
Earth Defense Force 2017 Waiting on reviews
Virtua Tennis 3 Waiting on reviews and waiting for my dead 360 to return from the grave, so I can try the demo

Wii:
Cooking Mama: Cook Off Yes
Kororinpa: Marble Mania Probably
Wing Island Reviews so far have been deadly, but if the major sites or people here think differently, I could be swayed...if it's something my three year old can do, then I'll also be in

DS:
Custom Robo Arena Waiting on reviews
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of Warlords Yes
Steel Horizon Waiting on reviews
Theme Park Maybe

Ugh, this'll be a rough week made even rougher by waiting for my 360.  Hopefully it comes back before Shimmering Isles arrives.  The sad thing is that even though there are a lot of games I'm getting, none of them has me really excited.
