14481  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games You Can't Stop Playing on: March 12, 2007, 02:51:36 PM
Gears had that effect for me, as well, though I cooled for a bit and just finished the single player two nights ago.  I was hooked for a long time.  Especially on MP, and I'm not usually much of an MP guy.

The combination of Crackdown and the Achievements Reward Challenge (got my 1500 points last night, BTW) had me plow through that game like butter.  I stopped for a bit before the last few baddies, and I'm finding it a little hard to get into again, but not much.  It's just a blast to play.

There's a tendency for me to stop playing a game if I feel like I'm dedicating too much time to it or if I feel like I'm going to finish it.  Frankly, that's ridiculous, but it's a habit I can't shake.  It doesn't help if a new game comes out.

The only game that kept drawing me back straight through to completion was Oblivion.  Even KOTOR, which I also plowed through, got some downtime, but any time I tried something new during Oblivion, it quickly got sent to the back burner.  It helped that not a lot was coming out for the 360 at the time, but still.

Tiger Woods, unless I see some bad reviews.  Maybe TMNT.  Maybe Double Dungeons.  Make that NOT Double Dungeons.
14483  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 Impressions on: March 09, 2007, 03:58:38 PM
I found the little I've played with the single player to be an improvement in nearly every way over GRAW 1 (still would like to save anywhere, though- I had a lockup during one of the last tutorials and was pissed that I had to start the whole thing over- at least the levels seem a little shorter).  The team-mate AI is pretty damn good, fixing probably the biggest problem over all.  And I'm amazed at how impressed I can still be by next-genniness in the graphics.

I didn't love the MP demo, but I jumped into a couple of games last night online and had a great time (even got a team leader achievement, which could only be accomplished this early into the game's release).  I'm bummed that you can't lock into a wall, but I understand why.  Still, that led to a lot of frustration after coming off of the single player.

Overall, I'm loving it more than I thought I would.

I'm a little worried about the camera, too, but I'm more worried that there will not be a lot of variety in the worlds.  It seems to be a lot of running around with just black space in the background.  There was one scene with a reddish-pink background that gave me hope, but otherwise this just feels like those annoying block levels from Sunshine over and over again.

I am looking more forward to the Paper Mario platformer than this, but I am still interested, at least.

A true killer app. Something like what Mario 64 did for the N64, or Wii Sports on the Wii.

Um... you mean Zelda for the Wii, right?  Wii Sports was a pack in that a lot of gamers didn't even know existed.

I agree with Farscry.  Wii Sports may be a pack-in but it's really what gets the most buzz.  My mom actually wants a Wii because of it!

All I know is that Conan played Serena Williams in Wii Tennis on his show.  For the "casual" gamer, I think Wii Sports would be considered a killer app.

Man, I must be in the minority then.  I seriously didn't even know this game existed until after launch.

Yup. You're in the minority. icon_biggrin All the promo stuff I saw/read leading up to the Wii launch was focused mostly on Wii Sports, not Zelda. And it's Wii Sports that's sold the system to the mainstream masses who are still buying them up faster than the shelves can be stocked.

Nintendo's gamble paid off, in the short run at least, by appealing to a new gaming demographic. The "hardcore" gaming audience generally dislikes the Wii, writing it off as a puny little sibling to the 360/PS3.  That's the audience that Nintendo didn't bother trying to capture, because there's already two solid platforms vying for that audience. They went for a different audience, and so far it's working pretty well (much like with the DS). Obviously, this is a first for the gaming market since the introduction of the original NES (basically the same gamble in a different era) and it remains to be seen how successful they'll be in the long run.

Heck, I keep failing to see anything to really draw me into buying a Wii myself; there's nothing in the next few months that's a killer app on the system for me personally, and my late spring purchase is looking more and more like it's going to be delayed into a holiday season purchase, and even that's iffy. It's wild how much my excitement waned from my "day one purchase!" claims after E3 last year into pretty much no excitement for the system currently. Right now, the 360, PC, DS, and PS2 provide more gaming than I could possibly ask for, and the Wii just doesn't offer anything I absolutely must have that I can't get elsewhere yet. I even picked up Twilight Princess on the Cube so I wouldn't need to grab the Wii to play it.

One big issue I see for the Wii is that third party games are still going for hardcore gamers.  The casual fan is not going to enjoy SSX Blur much, for example.  Too frustrating.

Did anyone else have a tough time getting in an online battle?  I kept getting a message that the Worms server was not available or the game was not available any more.  I tried hosting a game and the console froze on me.  The next time I was in the lobby we waited for a long time and kept getting no response from the host.  Another guy said that when he tried to host the console locked, so we figured it had happened again.  I only got to play one game last night.  I did have a blast because even though I suck, most everyone else did, too.  And the few who didn't had some unlucky things happen.  Still, I know I won't be able to devote time to it like others and the fun of getting spanked repeatedly is going to wane.

Home trailer here:

Looks like Sims crossed with Second Life.  Not really my thing but I can imagine there is probably a market for this type of thing out there based on how well those two have done.

Man, as I was watching them talk about stuff like movie theaters that you go to where you can download movies and the chatroom stuff and I honestly couldn't help but think "Is there a way to skip all that BS and just do it through a menu fast?"  The metaverse was a cool idea in Snow Crash, but I want a console to play games.  Even when I go to bring up the Xbox interface thing to check out someone's Achievements I feel like it's slower than it should be.  Now I have to load a whole world and find my friend's house?

Yeah, that's how I feel.  The Live interface is almost too much for me- I want to turn on my console and play games, not hang out in an interface.  I can't imagine that Sony won't put some form of shortcuts in there though, at least for matchmaking and the like.

But, again, enough people seem to enjoy this stuff in the Sims and Second Life that there is clearly a market for people who do want to "hang out" in some abstract virtual realm.

Yeah, but Sims Online was a major, major failure.  And this feels like less of the same, to me.  Maybe it'll be cool, but they have to get load time down to nothing and give people a reason to want to visit other people's home spaces.  I mean, sure I'd love to show off my trophies, but how much would I care about seeing other peoples?

If Mass Effect still makes May or even June, I'll be happy.  With Shivering Isles in the mix, I can pace it out. Two Worlds is supposedly coming in May, too.  Maybe Metroid Prime 3 will even make it in there...

Of course, EB still lists Blue Dragon as coming in June, so all of these dates could change (and probably will).

The only real draw of GRAW would be for the multi with GT'ers, and I'm not feeling a strong forum effect in that direction.  I'll be waiting and following the relevant thread(s).  It's not like I can play this week anyway until at least the weekend.

Worms is a possibility.  I remember playing the original Worms and having fun with it way back when.  I just wonder if it will hold up with the passage of time.  In any event, I'll at least check out the demo version.
I am a little wierded out we havent seen any reviews yet on GRAW 2 since it releases today, but barring any terrible news about the SP campaign I am still in. I am also seriously considering Motorstorm for instant purchase.

I think it's in stores tomorrow though, right?  Maybe not, as this is one of those "big" releases.

Oddly enough, you only have to place to "win" the tournament. Kind of Weird, but I'll go along with it.

Two things I don't like about Blur, No voice overs. I loved the voice acting in Tricky, and they really lent the characters some well, character. I have a feeling the game was fast forwarded by EA to get on the Wii bus as soon as possible. If they had a couple months they could've gotten VA in. Second, slalom is tough. Mainly because cutting(trying to turn in the opposite direction than the one you are facing) in the snow is obviously harder than leaning, but in SSX it's extra tough. It's almost as if you need to figure out how to switch footings after each gate to make it easier to pass them all. There doesn't seem to be a sensitivity meter that allows you to cut back better. Hopefully as my character improves and I get better edging the slaloms will become easier.

Slaloms are a royal pain, it's true.  One thing that helped me is that you don't have to go around each flag, you just have to go over it and make it bend down.  Saves a lot on the cutting, but it's still way too tough.  I think I placed 3rd once.

I don't think there were voice-overs in SSX 3, either.  In fact, this whole production seems very similar to that game.  There are parts of the mountain that are absolutely the same and the DJ is very similar, too (same guy, but his patter seems a little less annoying this time out).

The reviews have been good.  I loved the first game and really liked the second.  Why am I not loving this one?  I'm finding career mode really challenging, for one, but not in a good way.  The computer definitely plays catch up, which is insanely frustrating.  Dominating the game?  Get ready for multiple steals and three-pointers.  The reverse doesn't work, though.  Maybe as my skills improve, I'll be able to up my stealing ability.  Also, I was doing the cool double shot (the ball goes in, bounces and lets you redunk), but all of a sudden its clanging off of the rim on a dunk.  Maybe I'm getting the wrong guy to the hoop.  The opposing team seems to pull this crap off flawlessly all the time (especially when they're behind for a second).  Also, there's no map, just a collection of seemingly random challenges, one of which will eventually open a new court.  However, you don't seem to have the ability to go back to a previous court, which seems to be the way I'd like to increase my stats now.  Also, there's no way I've seen that charts your progress.  It doesn't give you that sense of accomplishment the previous games have.  You unlock special clothes as you play, but I haven't seen a reason you unlock the cool shoes, just all of a sudden you do.

Anyone else frustrated with this?

Seriously guys, come on.

I agree.  I think people have been coming down on Hetz for his amusing grumpiness over Microsoft's lack of exciting XBLA releases.  When he tried to back away from it, people were wondering where his comments were.  When he started commenting again, people tore him a new one.  Can't blame the guy for feeling abused, really.

Starshifter, I appreciate your impressions, as well.  I will probably pick this game up at some point, but I will be waiting for the bargain bin.  Still, your general attitude toward the game is not far from where I'd be playing it, so that moved it from never get at all to wait for a low price.

I'm glad to hear the halfpipes get easier.  I'm having a tough time there.

For me a bigger frustration than the ubertricks (which are hard) is grabbing to the right.  I have no problem with the other four directions, but for some reason the right never registers.  Extremely frustrating.  I wish they had used the stick instead of moving the nunchuck.  Also, that way I would remember to move the stick forward again after landing.

I'm passing this time around.  I had it for Gamecube and enjoyed it, but I just don't have the patience for the difficulty again.  Also, the achievements look kind of tough (there's one where you have to bite, I think, 50 heads without shooting or landing on the ground).

Anyone who ever played and enjoyed any game at all in the Wing Commander series?  I'm all for formula changes but apparently the only thing this has in common with Wing Commander is that you're flying spaceships around in something that appears to be a failed impersonation of "space".  I've got my original boxed copies of WC1 + both Secret Missions and WC2, so I am a little biased smile

Well it clearly looks like a Subspace ripoff, which is great because Subspace is fantastic, and even today, incredibly addictive.  But I do agree slapping "Wing Commander" on it simply because they own the name, and want addition units sold is pathetic beyond fucking pathetic. This I agree with, and yes, I have played virtually every WC game, and played the first one religiously for years.  Tongue

Even as a Subspace clone it fails, as it only has 16 players at a time.  I was a huge Subspace addict, and a zone with 16 players typically meant you were going to spend the next few minutes trying to switch to a populated zone.

That said, I was a huge Subspace addict, so if this game gets at least mediocre reviews I'll probably end up buying it.

Quick question:  Were you a huge Subspace addict?

This really does seem like a lame little space shooter that they were already putting together when someone said, "Hey, we'll move 22% more units if we brand it" and thus did Wing Commander get slapped on there.  Maybe it'll even be a fun little space shooter (though it looks pretty slow moving in the clips I saw), but it ain't Wing Commander.

I'm gonna guess that the achievements you don't have are the agility and hidden orbs ones.  I wish there was a better way to track those down.  I got the guide to help, but it is utterly useless.  Just a bunch of blobs on a map that's too pulled out and then a series of not at all helpful pictures.  There's no way to tell where the pictures are taken, as there's no numbering or anything.  Grrr.  Any tips there?

I played a couple of more levels last night, and I definitely had fun with it.  I personally wish it had a more linear progression on mission choices, but that's only a personal thing.  I don't want to give the impression that the controls are a mess.  They work fine, but they could have been better.  If a little more time had been spent on responsiveness, this would have been an amazing game with awful music and script.

Anyway, I only meant to play one mission last night and wound up playing three, so that should tell you something.  Originally, my plan was to crank Sonic's level as much as possible, but I found out that you can't get some rewards if you're above a certain level.  Ah, well.

Bottom line for me, though, is it's nice to have something else, anything else to play on the Wii, and this could have been a lot worse.
14516  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sonic and the Secret Rings Review(s) on: February 22, 2007, 12:10:44 AM
I gave it a go.

Played the first set of tutorials and the first mission.  Of course it's too early for a review, but it definitely feels like the controls should be tighter.  It's not ruining gameplay at all yet, but I've missed some rings by not tilting it enough or too much, though both felt the same to me.  I can see this leading to bigger problems down the road.

That said, there is fun to be had here, for sure, and there seems to be a lot to do.  I do wish I'd waited for a price drop, but I imagine about $30 would be reasonable.

Oh, and the script and music are just awful.
