14481  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (8/14) on: August 14, 2006, 03:46:13 PM
I was down for ninety nine nights after the demo, but the Gamespot review turned me off.  Maybe another review will turn me back on again.  I was also into Deep Labyrinth, but the only review I've seen was bad.  Maybe Freedom Wings will work.
14482  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best start page with news on: August 09, 2006, 05:52:32 PM
Thanks, gang.  I've already checked those sites, but I still think iwon has the best layout I've seen.  Any other choices out there?
14483  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best start page with news on: August 09, 2006, 04:00:42 PM
I'm currently using as my start page.  It has the best layout to my eyes that I've seen, and I can get all the news, more or less, that I need.  However, I know they're doing some heavy tracking of me, and I could care less about the possibility of winning money, so I'm wondering what other people are using for general news pages (by the way, Gametab is my first link in the morning.  Love that, but I need something with "real" news).
14484  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Tales of Eternia on: August 08, 2006, 01:29:47 AM
Am I missing something?  I thought this game was coming stateside in the fall.  Gamespot has it listed coming Oct 2.
14485  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to the 360? on: August 05, 2006, 05:29:50 AM
Either that or he was quietly reassigned to the Microsoft Bob 2.0 team.

Huzzah for the comedy, my friend.
14486  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to the 360? on: August 05, 2006, 04:35:55 AM
I just read some quote in Play or OXM from the guy who heads up XBLA literally saying, "We don't want your crappy ass PS1 games."

I'm paraphrasing, but I do think a combination of "crappy" and "ass" was in there.
14487  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Live] Dead Rising Demo! on: August 04, 2006, 10:00:40 PM
I think the PP points are used for level advancement in the full game (didn't seem to change at all in the demo).  Level advancement will, at the very least, give you more slots for item carrying.  I'm assuming it will increase your damage and speed as well.

I will find that Katana tonight. Thanks kathode!

Also have to try the coat hanger.  I love taking pictures of zombies that have green PPs over their heads (you need the right book to see PP values).  Usually they're falling down or walking into walls or have the masks on their heads.  Good points for that, especially if you line them up with a lot of zombies in the background.
14488  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone Played Trace Memory? on: August 04, 2006, 09:52:27 PM
I second the "loved it" opinion.  I'm an adventure game fan, for sure, though.  I'm also the type who has to play through everything.  I was stopped for a while because I hadn't found enough clues to get all the questions at the end of one chapter and didn't want to play all the way through the level again.  However, just recently I plowed through to the end.  Very enjoyable game with a good use of the DS.  I wish we'd see more like this.
14489  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Live] Dead Rising Demo! on: August 04, 2006, 02:35:38 PM
Downloaded, but I think I have to wait for my little one to take a nap.  Unless anyone can think of a way to explain zombie decapitation to a three year old.
14490  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to the 360? on: August 04, 2006, 02:34:37 PM
I've been more bored by the classic arcade games than I was expecting, but if we start seeing more classic console games, I will so be there.  I basically missed the consoles from the SNES to PS1 (and most of PS2, for that matter), so I'm all over this and the Wii's back catalogue.
14491  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GH for 360? on: July 22, 2006, 03:23:48 AM
Please let it not be the original GH with all the same songs. I will not buy it a second time.

The rumors I've seen have been about GH2.
14492  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Since last login indicator gone on: July 21, 2006, 06:09:33 PM
I'm finding that posts that have been made since my last login are no longer showing as yellow.  I'm sure this has something to do with my cookies or something, but I'm not sure what to do about it.  Any help would be appreciated (although I'll be out of town for several days, so I won't be able to respond).

Also, I cannot logout.  Probably related, I'm guessing.
14493  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SO, I guess I'm not getting Lumines 2. Heres why: on: July 20, 2006, 05:03:35 PM

14494  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Blade Dancer - anyone try it? on: July 20, 2006, 03:34:42 PM
Valkyrie Profile seems to be getting all the attention, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried Blade Dancer.  I was going to get it, but then even the positive reviews said the learning curve was high and it takes awhile for the game to get going, but once it does it stays frustratingly challenging.  That may be a selling point for some of you, but not for me.  However, I'd love to hear impressions, see what you guys think.
14495  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Cloning Clyde Available on Live on: July 20, 2006, 03:29:22 PM
IGN gives it an 8.1.

I seem to be blowing through it pretty quickly, though.  I've already played two of five levels and the training, and I think I've maybe played an hour and a half.

I tried multiplayer, but I had no idea what was going on.  Still, it seemed like it could be manic fun.
14496  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Cloning Clyde Available on Live on: July 19, 2006, 08:12:08 PM
I dove in and played straight through 8 levels.  Really fun, IMO, though I am a platforming junkie.  Hopefully it won't get too too challenging (like Lost Vikings did), but I can see it complicated pretty quickly.
14497  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SO, I guess I'm not getting Lumines 2. Heres why: on: July 19, 2006, 04:46:26 PM
It's like they took Lumines and followed the classic steps:

1. Take pre-existing game
2. Prepare sequel
3. ?
4. Profit!

Except the took the ? to mean: Make it suck.
14498  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SO, I guess I'm not getting Lumines 2. Heres why: on: July 19, 2006, 12:28:42 AM
The non-mainstream House music of the last one was what made the game, no question.  If they had to go mainstream (worried that they couldn't catch lightning in a bottle twice, maybe), there are worse choices, by far.  My fear is that I'm going to have to watch the videos for these songs while I play.
14499  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chromehounds - NOW WITH IMPRESSIONS on: July 18, 2006, 04:57:12 PM
In fairness, if Soulchilde has the Plantronics X30 headset, the "off" position looks like a microphone.  There's a line through it, but that's hard to see.  I've thought it was on numerous times myself, especially as the "on" position has no icon at all.
14500  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HDTV for gaming.. on: July 18, 2006, 04:53:54 PM
I think the real question Nintendo should be asking is how many gamers will have an HDTV by 2011.  It will be greater than 2/3 by then, for sure.

Personally, I don't care about playing DVDs or HD DVDs (or Blahrays) on my console.  I'll get a dedicated machine for that.  But since I have an HDTV, I'd like my games to take advantage of them.
14501  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Saint's Row demo? on: July 15, 2006, 05:33:55 PM
I saw a rumor that there is an in-store demo for Saint's Row available at Toys R Us (soon at EB and GS).  Supposedly and shockingly, the thing costs $10.  Maybe it's with a deposit on the game, but that seems to defeat the point of getting a demo.

Can anyone confirm this?
14502  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lord of the Rings: Oblivion Announced on: July 15, 2006, 04:51:45 PM
So you need to be the head of the Mage's Guild and the Dark Brotherhood before you can recruit any companion(s)?

You can get mage companions at Arcane University after becoming head of the Mage's Guild and assassins at the Brotherhood stronghold as head of the Dark Brotherhood.  You don't need to be head of both unless you want two companions.

How would I go about doing that?

After becoming head of either guild, approach an apprentice walking around.  Talk to them and ask them to follow you.  They will.

Just so we're clear, though, it's not like they're going to be chatting you up on your questing.  They're really to provide additional firepower, much like the assistants you could hire in Diablo II, if I remember correctly.
14503  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lord of the Rings: Oblivion Announced on: July 15, 2006, 12:04:46 PM
My only problem with Oblivion was the fact that you coudn't hire mercenaries or companions.. I don't understand why Bethesda keeps leaving this feature out of all their games when the demand is there. (Look at all the companions coming out on the PC - maybe we'll get lucky and see one of them released on Xbox Live.)

The world is huge and is fun to explore, but it'd be even more fun if you had a companion to explore it with. It gets lonely out there on those long travels.. yeah I know AI is only AI, but hey, it worked in KOTOR (among others) so it could have just as easilyi worked in Oblivion. I'm not talking about a huge army or anything, just one or two guys you could hire to quest with.. maybe something like Guild Wars where you could bring along a few NPC henchmen to help you fill out your party.

Actually, Oblivion has exactly that.  Once you're head of the Mage's Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, you can bring NPC henchmen along with you for as long as you want.  One of each, if you'd like.

Well, I caved.  I'm actually enjoying the single player missions much more than I expected.  It helps that you unlock cool parts by scoring well (so far, I've got all 'S' ranks, but I've only played the first three missions on Soldier and Sniper).

I tried joining the squad, but I'm getting a "failed to connect."  I'm probably going to be a fairly casual player, though, so I don't want to take up a slot if others are going to be playing feverishly.  I've got a lot of vacation time coming up.

My XBL tag is BullwinkleJ.
14506  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lord of the Rings: Oblivion Announced on: July 13, 2006, 08:29:45 PM
I wish someone would make an Elderscrolls style game set in a futuristic world.

Isn't Mass Effect starting to look like that?
14507  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Oblivion Content - Bethesda gets it right on: July 12, 2006, 03:46:00 PM
I have to say my Dark Brotherhood horse looked dorky until I bought the horse armor.  Now he scares me.

Not worth the $$, though, that's true.

The orrery looks cool but is completely useless.  I like the $2K I get weekly from the Dunbar Pirates, though (and I love that one of them is named Yinz'r - some designer is from Pittsburgh, for sure).  I've heard Wizard's Tower is a good one, but I don't have the patience for the other one they put out (sounds like its too long).  Basically, I'm slogging through the Main story quests as part of the last gaming I'm going to do for Oblivion.  I may come back to these downloadables, but who knows.

Edit: Removed a "for sure," for sure.
14508  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you buying this week? (7/10) on: July 10, 2006, 11:33:06 PM
I'm actually suprised that people are so defiantly supporting Chromehounds, given the bad reviews.  Not saying don't buy it (I'm waiting for stateside reviews and impressions), but I'd expect more of a wait-and-see approach.

Prey for me, though the demo multi wasn't as great as previews led me to believe.  I'm more of a single player guy anyway (which may explain my reluctance on Chromehounds, anyway).
14509  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Brady Bunch Kung Fu. No, I'm not kidding on: July 06, 2006, 04:30:50 PM
Actually, the reviews have all been pretty good for it (haven't played it myself, though).  Gamerankings has an average score of 76%.  IGN, 1UP and Gamespot all liked it.

Again from Japan. Again. not great.

I should point out that I was confusing the Gamebrink review of OverG Fighters with another Chromehounds review.  Although their take on OGF makes me trust them a little more on Chromehounds.

14512  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prey Demo, today? on: July 02, 2006, 04:40:00 PM
Yeah, MP wasn't great for me, either.  Although the kids I was playing really seemed to enjoy the fact that I'd picked "the old dude."
14513  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Moving Xbox saves to 360 on: June 30, 2006, 09:42:07 PM
Naw, the locked saves are a function of the Xbox, not the AR (it basically does the same thing as the mega x-key).

Of the games listed Spyro and Crash Nitro Kart can be moved for sure.  I haven't tried Forza yet, and Halo 2 I actually played through again, which was very suprising for me.  I didn't realize Spongebob was on the list, or I would have tried that.

I was able to move a bunch of games, but there are some key games I really want to move (Jade Empire, Lego Star Wars, Ninja Gaiden Black, suprisingly Grabbed by the Ghoulies, et al).
14514  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Moving Xbox saves to 360 on: June 30, 2006, 06:34:38 PM
Thanks, shaggydoug, but I'm actually not talking about moving the 360 stuff.  The Action Replay I have is for the original xbox, and it's there that some saves will not give you the "copy" option.  The XSATA is the device I used to get the saves on the 360, and aside from the PIA of having to lug the 360 to my PC, it worked very well.  I was able to copy a bunch of saves over and have been having a great time continuing some of the old games on the new machine.  However, some of the ones I really want to keep playing can't (at this time) be moved over from the original xbox (due to being "locked" or not copyable).  This is my problem.
14515  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Moving Xbox saves to 360 on: June 30, 2006, 02:55:46 PM
Can anyone point me in the direction of a way to copy "locked" saves to my PC?
14516  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 7000 PSOne Games on the PSP by end of 2007 on: June 30, 2006, 03:25:41 AM
The problem is that most PS1 games actually look like ass these days.

Yeah, but they look much better on the small screen.
14517  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Map pack for COD2 on: June 29, 2006, 09:56:56 PM
There's a new map pack available for Call of Duty 2.  800 points (which translates to $10).  5 new maps.

Has anyone tried it yet?  Is it worth $10?  How much was that last one?  $2/map seems steep to me.

Still, it's better than $20, but that had new game modes and such.
14518  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chromehounds - NOW WITH IMPRESSIONS on: June 29, 2006, 03:27:04 PM
Chromehounds is on Marketplace in the US! but it's only themes and gamerpictures.  Lame.
14519  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 7000 PSOne Games on the PSP by end of 2007 on: June 29, 2006, 03:24:15 PM
They may be using old arcade compilation games to inflate the numbers, but that still seems way too high.
14520  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Switches in Kirby: Canvas Curse? on: June 29, 2006, 04:56:16 AM
The switches can be in later levels.

Which, frankly, is one of the most annoying things about this otherwise great game.  I spent hours on one level, probably the one you're on, going back again and again, knowing I must have missed something.  Screaming in frustration, then screaming louder when I found out I couldn't unlock it in that level.  The whole thing just pissed...

Don't get too upset about it.

Oh.  Never mind.
