That's funny, I would've said it feels easier than the demo (I'm using the next to easiest setting, but should probably move up one).

I've just unlocked Tier 3 and really enjoying this. Lots of different event styles, and the vehicle classes handle quite differently.

Yeah, I'm using the amateur setting and am thinking about dropping down to the next lowest, even though Captain You're-Awesome keeps telling me to go for Pro-Am.
14323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DiRT [360/PS3/PC] Impressions on: June 21, 2007, 04:57:39 PM
The difficulty feels higher than it did in the demo, which is the only negative for me so far (that and the non-working code - there were no dashes in the code I received, but I did enter them in the online process).

It's amazing how great the menus are.  Really, we're this jazzed about the menus?  Good thing the gameplay holds up, too.

Apparently, Famitsu gave it a near perfect score (39/40).  It comes out this weekend in Japan.

After heading to Best Buy ("Sorry, we're having distribution problems") and Circuit City ("Uhhh, what game?  Is that new?") I finally tracked a copy of DiRT down at GameStop.  They even threw in a card that is supposed to let me unlock 10 extra cars, but unfortunately you have to use that code and your game's unique code to get a third one, and that code doesn't work in the game for me.

Early impressions are that if you liked the demo you should love the game.  Which I think we already knew.  It's nice that they have a more traditional Rally Championship as well as the Career mode with all of the racing types.

I couldn't get the code to work, either.  Very annoying.

I'm loving this game, but not quite as much as I loved the demo.  I think I was getting too used to the Forza style waiting for this and now I'm rusty on the slip-sliding rally style.

Oh, and the first race with the trucks has been the hardest one for me, so far.

My complaint is that too many of the minigames use the controller NES style, and not enough have unique motion controls.  Hopefully the next in the series will take care of that shortcoming.  Also, copious amounts of alcohol improves the fun level as well.

That's a big complaint for most reviewers, too.  To me, they found a pretty good balance, and I like the fact that some non-waggle play is in there.
14332  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomb Raider Anniversary downloads for 360 on: June 18, 2007, 09:30:45 PM
I know $30 is the same price as the discs in stores (though by then they'll have come down in price, probably), but that still seems pricey for some reason.  Perception, I'm sure.  None the less, I'm leaning toward this over the Wii version just for graphics and familiarity of controls.  I don't like the idea of not having a solid disc, though.

I think a lot of people are going to balk at the idea of having to purchase TR:L to get this, though (especially since it doesn't seem to be available at EB now).  It is a good game, and folks should have it, but it seems sneaky to force folks to pay what'll be $20 on top of the $30 for what is a new budget game everywhere else.
14333  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (6/18) on: June 18, 2007, 09:23:29 PM
Does anyone know if it's at all possible to transfer a Gamecube save to use on the Wii version of RE4?  I'll probably pick it up, regardless, but I hate the idea of slogging through to the same halfway point again.

Definitely getting Dirt.  I may get Band of Bugs, if it strikes me.  I'm not always sure on strategy titles, but I have liked their past two games.

Band of Brothers DS is high on my wait and see list.  I hope its good.  If it's even as good as the version on cell phones, but longer, I'll be in.

The Touch Darts game is getting some good reviews.  7.5 from IGN UK.  Saying:
Quote
The only other disappointing thing about the game is the ease with which you’ll get through the majority of the single-player game, and the fact that the game doesn’t include a sledging mode to really capture the ruthless psychological dimension of darts at the highest level. Apart from that it is, simply, the best ever videogame version of darts.

That last line has me interested, for sure.  However, I see no signs that this is coming out in the States.  Has anyone heard differently?  Anyone tried it (like Metallicorphan)?

Completely different control scheme, completely different style of gameplay, and it takes place mostly outdoors and above the surface of the planet. Besides the obvious "its good to be evil" theme the game is going with, I don't see any similarities.
The theme is a strong, unique selling point, as it was for DK.  Otherwise, yeah, there's not a lot similar.

[Let's give it 2 hours. 2. There is not multiplay (that I've seen posted). I dunno man. I'm not speaking from experience on this (as I never got a chance to try it last night) and I may be in here later munchin' on crow, but it's a pretty steep price. I spent a ton of time of SoTN and it was a much longer game with different replay modes.

Value propositions are always tough- Riddick and it's 8 hours of gameplay cost me the same as Final Fantasy XII and it's 75 hours but I don't regret either purchase.

I'm not really advocating for PoP specifically- I've only made it through 3 levels so I'm not really sure how much I'll like it or if I'll regret it.  I just don't agree with the "it's only 60 minutes" comments.  That's like saying that Super Metroid is only an hour because you can speed run it in that time.  60 minutes is the time conceit that the game imposes on the story but since the game itself is actually pretty difficult, I expect that the average player is going to spend quite a bit more time with it than that.

Absolutely!  Even having played the game before the easy 1st level easily took me twenty minutes of getting used to the controls, exploring, looking for the life power-up and restarting.  On top of that, there are two other modes to play through if you're so damn good at the regular mode.  Time Attack and Survival at least give you other things to do.

I think you're confusing Brain Age with Big Brain Academy on the DS.  Both good games, but the DS BBA did also measure your brain weight like the Wii version does.

Mayhem and chaotic are the words for that battle.  Sheesh.  I went through the tutorials, too.  They're not that complicated, but it's amazing how much you forget when you're thrown into the fight.  I was halfway through my second attempt before I remembered I could match speeds.  I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do to target the closest enemy (is it hold A??).  I think this could be fun, though.  I like that there's an overly dramatic story to go with the fighting.  I just hope there's a nice variety of missions and that there are mid-mission checkpoints (or short missions).

There is a review, according to Game Rankings.  360 Gamer Magazine UK (whoever they are) gave it 60%.

You're better off getting a year subscription to IGN and using their guides, which are actually pretty good (if you're looking for maps/etc. above and beyond what you can find on gamefaqs).

Yeah, I was worried it might come off like that.  I figured this site was no good, but I was curious if anyone had tried it.  Thankfully, I am already an IGN subscriber, but their are a few games that just never have guides.

It's actually 4.9.

It's also posted below...

In other news, fanboys Team Xbox gave it a 6.7, saying:
Quote
Surprisingly, Tenchu Z comes off “chunky” in general; the antithesis of what a ninja game should feel like- sleek and efficient. The concept is still golden, but the actual gameplay mechanics haven’t changed enough to really take advantage of such great material. There’s still a fair amount of entertainment value here, however, but be prepared to sift through some previous-gen-feeling moments to find those nuggets o’ ninja gold.
14348  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Tenchu Z on: June 13, 2007, 01:18:26 AM
The Gamespot review is out.  4.9?!  Ouch!

Guess I'll be out.

Here's the summary:
Quote
The Good: Sneaking around and killing from the shadows is pretty fun; co-op play via xbox live.
The Bad: Some of the worst AI you'll ever see; missions are repetitive; combat is lousy; most levels can be beaten by simply running right through them.

From top to bottom, Tenchu Z is a disappointment. No matter what aspect of the game you look at, there's a fatal flaw. There are 50 missions, but most of them are the same. You can sneak around, find creative ways to get to your objective, use a large number of interesting weapons, and kill bad guys with the press of a button, but you don't need to because you can simply run or summersault right past everyone. You can extract some fun out of the experience if you use your imagination and approach each level like a ninja, but unless you really, really want to kill some ninjas, you shouldn't waste time and energy trying to make this game fun. The developer certainly didn't.

Ignoring CeeKay aside, I was ready to get mad with the PA comic/article until I realized that their point was the opposite of what the comic set up.  This is something that always bugs me about PA, honestly.  Anyway, their comments about Pac-Man CE are pretty dead-on.  I would even drive the point that they're making, but never say home: All "classic" releases should be done like this.  And hopefully this week, we'll see the trend continue with Prince of Persia Classic.

I didn't really enjoy MP that much, honestly.  The one shot kill mechanic made it very hard to feel like you were doing anything.  Especially on non-deathmatch levels.  Maybe that's something that can be turned off and I happened to be in games that didn't, but it was more frustrating than fun, IMO.
14351  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (6/11) on: June 11, 2007, 03:10:51 PM
Big Brain Academy and Scarface for the Wii.

Prince of Persia Classic for 360 (YEAH!), Tenchu and Monster Madness if the reviews sway from from the bad taste in my mouth after the demos (though Tenchu wasn't bad, it left me with more of a lukewarm taste).
14352  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Overlords on: June 09, 2007, 02:24:25 PM
I wish there was an option to switch the camera control on and off.  Or to make camera control the default with the button used to control imps, but maybe as the game progresses the setting they have works best.
14353  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Overlords on: June 09, 2007, 03:20:43 AM
I enjoyed the demo a lot, myself.  The description of Fable+Dungeon Keeper is fairly apt, but so was whoever mentioned pikmin.  Controlling minions is just like that.  The voice work and graphics are very Fable-esque though.  Especially when villagers are saying, "Hooray."  Sounded almost like placeholder V/O work taken directly from Fable.  Actually, though, apart from the fact that you're evil and take on heroes, it doesn't seem to be very much like Dungeon Keeper at all.

I think it'll be a purchase for me, too, unless I hear that it doesn't maintain that quality through to the end (the surprisingly small number of minions news was a bit of a let down).

DiRT is one of the coolest racing games I have ever laid my hands on. Though the framerate is sometimes suspect, there's never been a racing game with this much detail. When you can count every leaf on every piece of brush across a three mile track, that's a major graphical accomplishment. If only every aspect of DiRT matched the graphics and presentation, it would be among the top racers on Xbox 360. DiRT still hasn't fixed Colin McRae's longtime use of a central pivot for turning and the racing feels floaty at times. DiRT isn't quite as good as some previous installments in the Colin McRae racing series, but it's certainly a worthy addition to the library.

Despite a few issues with the frame-rate and the disappointing online mode, Colin McRae: DiRT is one of the most enjoyable next-gen racing experiences we’ve had. The single-player is rich and fun, with a well-rounded collection of different events, vehicles and tracks which never become tiresome nor boring thanks to the variation of driving experiences offer. The feeling of speed is great too, particularly on the tighter courses, but most importantly DiRT is a lot of fun because it's immediately accessible. Whether you're an experienced wheelman or new to driving games, DiRT will offer a white-knuckle thrill ride you won't forget.

so are they noticeably better than Ninja Gaiden Black?

I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I haven't followed this game whatsoever until reading this thread

The character animation isn't nearly as smooth, but I think it looks better.  Other than the odd clipping problem, I really had no complaints about the graphics.

Having played through the demo again last night, and I really think I'm going to wait until a price drop before picking this up.   I can't really point to one major thing (well, maybe the save point issue), but there's a ton of little things that absolutely bug the crap out of me.    It'll probably be a great $30 game, but I can't see myself paying full price.

That's about how I feel, too.  The lack of mid-mission saves may kill even that, though.  Of course, I will see what reviews have to say, too.

You know what - who cares? You don't have to play each of them the day they come out ya know? If the game is good it will still be good 6 months after release and with RPG's you don't have to worry about not having anyone to play MP with. So buy the one you are in the mood for and wait on the others.

the problem is the effect the releases being so close to each other will have on sales at the time when they will be watching the sales with a critical eye.  The industry isn't patient, and bad initial sales will affect future titles.  If Enternal Sonata or Blue Dragon tank on release then we'll see less JRPG's, and if Mass Effect tanks then the trilogy will not be completed.

Ditto. I actually think ME and BD will sell very well, ME better than BD but both well enough to garner attention and sequels-the odd one out here is going to be Eternal Sonata. It comes last, its hyped up much less, its got wacky characters and concepts, a very limited marketing and hype campaign, and seems set up to fail-which is awful, because if the demo is an indiciation its going to be brilliant.

Though I doubt there would be a sequel.  How many times can Chopin die?

Still, it would effect future, similarly risky game concepts.

Actually, the waggle in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is suprisingly effective.
