Ignoring CeeKay aside, I was ready to get mad with the PA comic/article until I realized that their point was the opposite of what the comic set up.  This is something that always bugs me about PA, honestly.  Anyway, their comments about Pac-Man CE are pretty dead-on.  I would even drive the point that they're making, but never say home: All "classic" releases should be done like this.  And hopefully this week, we'll see the trend continue with Prince of Persia Classic.

From what I am hearing the multi is where it is at.  They say it is Call of Duty like in a West World.  Doesn't help me much, however, as I am only interested in SP.  I am gonna quit looking hard for it and in the next few months I will stroll in and there it will be on the shelf waiting for me to rent at Blockbuster.

I didn't really enjoy MP that much, honestly.  The one shot kill mechanic made it very hard to feel like you were doing anything.  Especially on non-deathmatch levels.  Maybe that's something that can be turned off and I happened to be in games that didn't, but it was more frustrating than fun, IMO.
14243  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (6/11) on: June 11, 2007, 03:10:51 PM
Big Brain Academy and Scarface for the Wii.

Prince of Persia Classic for 360 (YEAH!), Tenchu and Monster Madness if the reviews sway from from the bad taste in my mouth after the demos (though Tenchu wasn't bad, it left me with more of a lukewarm taste).
14244  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Overlords on: June 09, 2007, 02:24:25 PM
I wish there was an option to switch the camera control on and off.  Or to make camera control the default with the button used to control imps, but maybe as the game progresses the setting they have works best.
14245  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Overlords on: June 09, 2007, 03:20:43 AM
I enjoyed the demo a lot, myself.  The description of Fable+Dungeon Keeper is fairly apt, but so was whoever mentioned pikmin.  Controlling minions is just like that.  The voice work and graphics are very Fable-esque though.  Especially when villagers are saying, "Hooray."  Sounded almost like placeholder V/O work taken directly from Fable.  Actually, though, apart from the fact that you're evil and take on heroes, it doesn't seem to be very much like Dungeon Keeper at all.

I think it'll be a purchase for me, too, unless I hear that it doesn't maintain that quality through to the end (the surprisingly small number of minions news was a bit of a let down).

Non-UK IGN is out, too.  Not quite as good, but still positive: 8.4.

DiRT is one of the coolest racing games I have ever laid my hands on. Though the framerate is sometimes suspect, there's never been a racing game with this much detail. When you can count every leaf on every piece of brush across a three mile track, that's a major graphical accomplishment. If only every aspect of DiRT matched the graphics and presentation, it would be among the top racers on Xbox 360. DiRT still hasn't fixed Colin McRae's longtime use of a central pivot for turning and the racing feels floaty at times. DiRT isn't quite as good as some previous installments in the Colin McRae racing series, but it's certainly a worthy addition to the library.

Despite a few issues with the frame-rate and the disappointing online mode, Colin McRae: DiRT is one of the most enjoyable next-gen racing experiences we’ve had. The single-player is rich and fun, with a well-rounded collection of different events, vehicles and tracks which never become tiresome nor boring thanks to the variation of driving experiences offer. The feeling of speed is great too, particularly on the tighter courses, but most importantly DiRT is a lot of fun because it's immediately accessible. Whether you're an experienced wheelman or new to driving games, DiRT will offer a white-knuckle thrill ride you won't forget.

That's what I was saying, too, about ES.  How did Blue Dragon do in Japan?  I remember people lining up for it, but I also seem to remember that everyone who was going to buy it got it on the first day.

I'm not convinced Bio Shock will do all that well.  I think it'll be great, and I think core gamers will go apeshit for it, but I'm not convinced it's mass-market friendly.

I'm trying to decide if I liked the demo or not.  The graphics aren't mind-blowing, but I thought they were certainly better than XBox 1 level

so are they noticeably better than Ninja Gaiden Black?

I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I haven't followed this game whatsoever until reading this thread

The character animation isn't nearly as smooth, but I think it looks better.  Other than the odd clipping problem, I really had no complaints about the graphics.

Having played through the demo again last night, and I really think I'm going to wait until a price drop before picking this up.   I can't really point to one major thing (well, maybe the save point issue), but there's a ton of little things that absolutely bug the crap out of me.    It'll probably be a great $30 game, but I can't see myself paying full price.

That's about how I feel, too.  The lack of mid-mission saves may kill even that, though.  Of course, I will see what reviews have to say, too.

You know what - who cares? You don't have to play each of them the day they come out ya know? If the game is good it will still be good 6 months after release and with RPG's you don't have to worry about not having anyone to play MP with. So buy the one you are in the mood for and wait on the others.

the problem is the effect the releases being so close to each other will have on sales at the time when they will be watching the sales with a critical eye.  The industry isn't patient, and bad initial sales will affect future titles.  If Enternal Sonata or Blue Dragon tank on release then we'll see less JRPG's, and if Mass Effect tanks then the trilogy will not be completed.

Ditto. I actually think ME and BD will sell very well, ME better than BD but both well enough to garner attention and sequels-the odd one out here is going to be Eternal Sonata. It comes last, its hyped up much less, its got wacky characters and concepts, a very limited marketing and hype campaign, and seems set up to fail-which is awful, because if the demo is an indiciation its going to be brilliant.

Though I doubt there would be a sequel.  How many times can Chopin die?

Still, it would effect future, similarly risky game concepts.

The US demo is out now.

I tried this demo back when it appeared in Japan.  I liked it a lot then.  I like it less now.

The graphics seemed okay to me then, but they come off really bad now.  That said, it's been months, and the only thing I think has been changed is adding English subtitles.  I'm sure the graphics are much better by this point.

The real frustration came with the no save thing.  A checkpoint would have been great.  I came to the big conclusion and died.  The idea of slogging through that whole level again did not fill me with joy.

Still, there's a lot to like here.  I think the controls are good.  There's something fun about hopping around on the rooftops.  I was playing very in-and-out, hack-and-slash and that seemed to work, but you really do have to go for the stealth kills.  I wasn't able to take down anyone who had spotted me.

I'm going to wait for reviews on this, but hopefully it'll be good.  I always want to like the Tenchu games, but get disappointed.

The only other issue I can see with this game other than lack of multiplayer is that all the missions are timed (10 minutes and 5 minutes).  There should be at least one "endless" option, preferably one for each game type.

I played it again last night and really had a great time with it.  What amazes me is that it really is what's advertised.  It's Pac-Man, same basic feel and gameplay, but totally relevant to today's gaming landscape.  Kind of like when one of the endless redos that Hollywood puts out actually works.

I agree (though I actually did get the new hard drive).  I would rather have these on disc than cluttering up my hard drive.  That said, it's between the Wii and 360 versions for me.  If they muck up the Wii controls too much or if the graphics are remarkably sweeter on the 360 I would certainly be tempted.

Hey, um, guys.  This is a really great game. Seriously, it's the Geometry Wars of Pac-Man.  I was all set to try out Call of Juarez, but I thought I'd give it a go.  Tried the demo, went and played Small Arms a bit, but was called back to this game.  I paid for it and 45 minutes later, I had tried every single mode.  I figured there'd be some I didn't care for, but they're all great.  I can't imagine I'll get very far in the insane speed mode, but the rest of it - wow.  It's incredibly well balanced and satisfying.  Clearing one side of the maze becomes very rewarding and adds to the standard rewards of eating pellets and chomping ghosts.  And the graphics are even pretty cool.  There's a shimmer that happens as you play that reminds me of Geometry Wars, but the colors do, too.  The music adds to the mania in much the same way as it does in GW, as well.  It even shifts as you come close to the clock turning to a new minute.  The only thing that doesn't work here is the lack of multiplayer.  There are leaderboards, sure, but there should absolutely be at least a slap up the quarter on the arcade box mode.  A mode similar to the one that came out for the Gamecube and Gameboy combo would be ideal, though.

Seriously, stop laughing and give it a try.

Yeah, but compare this to the midway demo for the new Area 51.  That was polished and diverse and fun (if short).  And that doesn't come out until September.

Man, great story.  Has Hollywood optioned it yet? That sounds really sarcastic, but I mean it has everything: underdog, bad guy, misstep for the underdog, and finally a triumph where the bad guy dies AND slinks off in shame.

What I hate about Live is that I can never tell if my headset is on or not.  I was playing Shadowrun the other night and for the first time I switched to a human.  I always take the smartlink tech first, because it keeps you from killing fellow players.  It doesn't work with a katana, which I didn't know when I chose that as a weapon.  I flinched at one point and took down a friendly troll (too easy to do that, by the way).  This happened:

Dead Troll: Man, Bull, what the fuck?

Me: Sorry.  Geez, sorry.  Total accident.

Then I get what I assume is some ribbing with comments like, "Watch out for Bull, he's coming to getcha" and "Uh oh, Bull's a traitor" until I again accidentally take out a team mate.

Dead Elf: Damnit!  Bull did it again.

Me: Oh, God.  I'm sorry.  It's the katana.  I'm just not used to it.  I usually have smartlink on so this doesn't happen.

Other Teammate: I'm voting we kick Bull.

Me: No, look, I switched back to my rifle.  It won't happen again.  I promise.

Other Teammate 2: Me too.

Dead Troll: Yeah, fuck him.

Me: No, wait, guys, really...

Dead Elf: Damn traitor.

Me: Don't

Game: You have been kicked from the server.

I was so pissed at those guys until I saw my mike was off.  I felt like Emily Litella.

Me: Oh, never mind.

The worst part was that I was really doing great before that.  I'd saved the teams asses a number of times.  Ah, well.  Hopefully, I'll learn the lesson.

Oh I love this topic!  I know I'm the ONLY one here at GT that loved these two games:

Advent Rising (Xbox)
Bullet Witch (X360)

Advent Rising's story and characters were right up there with the KOTOR series.  And I don't think I need to tell you about Bullet Witch.  Both fantastic games that people loved to put down.

I enjoyed Advent Rising, too.  Played it start to finish.  I'm still hoping they release the sequels.  Once Bullet Witch comes down to a reasonable price, I'll give that a shot, too.

As for my choice, I'd go with a genre, actually.  Platformers.  I love 'em.  Even the lesser ones, as long as the controls are decent.  I liked the Tak series (at least the first two), Scaler, Vexx, even loved the Animaniacs game that came out last year.  But I'd have to put Voodoo Vince at the top of the list.  I wish they'd go back to that property, but I know they never will.

Another genre that I'm hoping will make a comeback on the Wii is Adventure Games.  I got a new laptop recently, and for some reason, I plunged hard back into them.  Even picked up some independant games that are amazing.

One last game that doesn't really fit in a category that I played straight through but didn't get a lot of attention was Chibi-Robo for the Gamecube.  It had personality and was a ton of fun to play.

After all, if the Shadowrun property gets some notoriety behind it (like if this game is successful), then that could actually lead to it having enough of a perceived mindshare for a future RPG game to be more than just a niche title.

I've never bought that argument.  If Shadowrun the Counterstrike Clone is a huge success then that only makes it more likely for them to focus their efforts on Shadowrun 2 in the same vein.

And it's not like MS needed to build up the name first- they are a first party publisher with enormous resources.  They could have pushed out very broad awareness of a Shadowrun RPG if that's the direction they decided to pursue from the get go.  They've managed to get plenty of publicity for new RPG IPs like Fable, Mass Effect, and Blue Dragon.  The only one they stumbled with was Sudeki.

As kind of a side note, the pre-marketing on Sudeki was still pretty high.  Sales may not have been great, but they tried.  We assume Blue Dragon and Mass Effect will sell big, but we don't know.  I would say Enchanted Arms was a bigger stumble, but I'm not sure what those sales were like.

IGN's review is out.  6.8.  I do agree with their comment at the start of the summary:
Quote
A title needs a well-designed core of gameplay to be a success - we're not disputing that. But it's the extras and unlockables that keep people around. Shadowrun has no visible persistent statistics, no way to modify character models, nothing, outside of Achievements, to serve as reward. As gamers, it's rewards we crave, be it of the narrative variety, in-game items, new options or modes, or something entirely different. Shadowrun completely ducks away from the gaming tenet that sometimes the utterly superfluous can be the most necessary. Since this game's rewards are restricted to and reset after every match, there lacks that overarching sense of accomplishment that should be associated with a game designed to be played for endless hours.

I could see this being an issue for me, longevity-wise.  Probably my biggest problem with the game.  However, they go on to complain about the "poor art style," and I just don't see that at all.  It may not be as dazzling as Gears or GRAW 2, but I wouldn't describe it as poor at all.
14278  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Console & Control Issues? on: June 05, 2007, 03:53:03 PM
I've had issues where the Wii won't recognize a controller for some random reason.  I've had to reboot the Wii from time to time, too.  But the biggest issue I have is that the Wii seems to be just at the edge of the range, though I think my TV is only about eight feet from the couch.  There are infrequent control problems in games, possibly from the range problem.  The Dragon Ball Z game won't even let me play unless I sit at the edge of the couch, which is uncomfortable.  I heard that one of the wireless sensor bars has a much longer range (though only in battery mode, which is annoying), so I ordered it recently, hoping to get rid of the range issue.  I wish Nintendo would just up the power output to the bar a little (assuming that's the issue).

A nice twist poorly implemented.  That was the thing that had me most interested in the game, but it really didn't have much impact on gameplay.  I've read a little more on the game, and there really does seem to be exactly one place where your sniper can climb onto the roof (and it's marked with a rope that could be climbed to reach said roof, but you sit through a grappling hook cut scene anyway).
