Quote from: Autistic Angel on March 02, 2008, 06:36:51 PM

When news first hit the internet about how easy and user-friendly it is to upgrade the hard drive in the PS3, some people were theorizing that moving from the stock 5400rpm drive to a more power-hungry 7200rpm one *might* cause some long-term problems.  I haven't heard a word about it since so I've assumed that nobody had any trouble, but since we have a thread on the topic, does anyone know anything more?

-Autistic Angel

Hey, I'm curious about this, too.

I would think 7200rpm would just improve read speed, but I can see it having compatibility issues somewhere.  I was thinking of going 7200rpm, but now I'm not sure.

EDIT TO ADD: I did a little research.  It seems the 7200 should not be a problem, but there is little increase in performance, mostly due to the bottleneck on the Blu-Ray drive.  There seems to be an average of 10% time saved when downloading or installing downloaded items, which could add up, certainly.  Is that increase worth the price increase?

It seems that more cache on the HD should help, as well.  The biggest difference seemed to come from the jump from the original 20 Gig unit's smaller cache to the newer units' bigger ones.  I haven't seen anything that tested this theory specifically on caches of 8MB, but I'd be interested to see if it makes a difference.

I'm not sure I get this line of reasoning-would you have doubts about CoD 4, Portal and Bioshock because Mortyr sucked?

Mortyr rocked my faith in all gaming.

Has anyone tried the Wiimote+Nunchuck mode?  Kotaku swears by it, but I haven't given it a go yet.

My now five year old is having a hard time with the wheel, having never driven a car before.  She keeps wanting to spin it around, twisting her body all over the place.  I wonder if she wouldn't have an easier time with W+N.

I wouldn't classify this as cel shading.  It's definitely processed, but cell shaded refers more to it being shaded like a cartoon.  This is a more illustrative style.

Also, it's only 1 screenshot.  Now, imagine this shot moving and the whole world setup to render in this way.

I wonder what they used as a replacement for the sands mechanic?

Imagine this shot moving, and you have animation.  Thus cel shaded.

I got it saturday. I am muscle sore like hell I have have to admit and I mostly did yoga! Never done yoga before so that probably explains it. The tree form was a bitch.

This is my asci representation of the treeform.

Kidding aside I mostly like it. The minigames are HARD! Took me a while to do some of them right though. For example in the soccer minigame I leaned mostly only my upper body at first and thought the game was slow as molasses in moving it's head. But I got the tip of the game that I should just change my lower body's weight on the board around and then it went alot better. Still hard though.

Wii Fit focuses alot on posture and with the board they have alot of information on that. So for example when you are doing a yoga stance you also get information about much you sway and such. It really helps you since you see how much you sway on screen.

All in all it's gonna take a while to evaluate this "game". Gonna keep at it and see how I like it after a week or so.

That's more like my ASCI of seeing the ladies do yoga.  Mee-yow!  Innapropriate-high-five!

Anyone try the wheel with other Wii driving games yet?

I'm frustrated as hell becasue my daughter wants me to unlock Daisy for her, and I have to pass the first three 150cc cups.  I keep coming close then getting those last minute BS FAILS.  It also doesn't help that I had passed the first cup perfectly, and then she copied over my license.  It further doesn't help that my wife keeps saying, "She's just a kid."  I know she's just a kid.  That makes it worse.  A) That means I can't yell at her and must bottle up all the anger inside and 2) It could happen again with some far more important save.

i'm officially done with Okami on the Wii.   the brush techniques are beyond frustrating to do.   i attempted to help Mr. Orange bloom the trees a good 45 minutes and it literally takes a perfect circle to draw the blooms.   not counting the numerous attempts leading up to that of restoring all the trees in the village.

and i'm not talking just about the bloom....i'm talking all the techniques i've tried so far.   i've painted slow, fast, deliberate, not so deliberate, etc. and nothing works consistently.   even the dodge (or whatever you call it) move i just got for Ammy doesn't always respond with the nunchuck.  no way will i play another 20 hours or so and be pissed off and frustrated with having to make perfect strokes to get simple techniques done.

too bad, was really excited about everything else with the game.   back to Gamefly tomorrow.

You know, I just went through the same frustration with Mr. Orange.  It took way too many attempts, and I felt like I was robbed on most of them.  It didn't help that you couldn't speed up or skip the dialogue after each failed attempt (and then about three tries in, they added more).  I'm not giving up, though.  I'm still enjoying the game.  I was ready to stop for a while during that.

Isn't it supposed to say Goddess on the back and not God though?

For some reason, Capcom was really strict that Amaterasu was genderless in the U.S. release, even though she's solely referred to in the feminine in both the Japanese and European versions.

Quote from: 1Up
1UP: What other sort of things went on behind the scenes in localizing Okami?

DC: Here's a few tidbits. Issun the character has a specific nickname for Amaterasu in the Japanese version where he calls her -- or I should say "him." I shouldn't say her. Actually that's one thing I should mention? R&D is very adamant about making Amaterasu genderless, which made localization very hard. Because we use pronouns a lot: he, she.

1UP: And Amaterasu is supposed to be a goddess.

DC: Yeah, and in traditional lore, the Amaterasu of those stories is definitely a sun goddess. But I guess the point Kamiya was trying to make is that this character is called Amaterasu, but it's not necessarily the Amaterasu. Because if you go by proper legend, Susano is Amaterasu's brother, and Tsukiyomi, which is actually a sword in the game, is one of their siblings.

1UP: So it's an embodiment, and genderless Amaterasu...

DC: Right, they're taking the names and general themes, but it's not necessarily the Amaterasu, it's a character named Amaterasu. For the European versions, I think they'll have to go ahead and make it a female because it'll be too hard to write around that. But for English, that was really difficult because we couldn't use he or she, and we didn't want to use "Amaterasu" every time we mentioned the character's name.

1UP: And you didn't want to use "it."

DC: Exactly. So we used "the wolf," "the god," things like that. There were ways around it, but it wasn't easy.

Personally, it always seemed perfectly clear that Amaterasu was female, but I guess Capcom wanted it to be left unclear.

-Autistic Angel

I have only played the Wii version, and I would swear that they have already referred to her as a goddess a couple of times.  In fact, I'm sure of it, because I remember thinking, Oh, it's a female.

I agree with the camera being a big issue, and I think the muddy graphics aren't going to help.

Much as I love the idea and setting for this, and as much as I was mildly enjoying the level, I was too bored to want to do it again and again over a long campaign.  Everything just took too damn long.  It took me something like 4 or 5 sets of moves just to get people in range.  Then a huge group of Nazis ran to the other side of the map, for no apparent reason and I had to work my way to them.  There are way too many characters to slog through each round, IMO, and not being able to tell where they really need to go and how to best get there made this more trouble than it was worth to me.  Of course, the Strategy RPG genre is generally not my cup of tea anyway.

I'm curious about the extra switch (that changes it to Wah Wah, etc).  Does that have any effect on gameplay?  When does it come into play, just when I whammy or is it a constant effect?

IGN has the bad news:

Deca Sports is yet another card to shuffle into the deck of quick cash-in sports/mini-game Wii efforts. Like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Winter Sports, Summer Sports, EA Playground, or Nintendoís own Wii Sports, Hudsonís latest effort attempts to draw in the new Wii crowd by delivering simple gameplay and an equally simple look, but in the end itís hands-down one of the least inspired and uneventful of any of Wiiís compilations. The gameplay is sloppy, the characters are incredibly plain, and even at a $30 price tag itís way, way overpriced. Thereís better out there. Skip it.

The title should really be something like "[Wii] VC becomes unnecessary for people with the skill or motivation to hack their console."  It's certainly not useless.  Plenty of people are either unwilling or unable to hack their Wii, and for them, VC is still going to be attractive.  It will likely cause Nintendo to lose some transactional income, but certainly not all of it.

I did that until I reversed the flight controls and immediately got alot better.

and i think the aim is more of a lock on than a crosshair - so if you get your circle close to a target, youll hit it - you dont actually have to center it in your crosshair

Trying out new music can be very nice, and it often takes a few listens to appreciate a new style or band that you aren't familiar with.

I don't think that's fair, really.  I am more than happy to try new music when buying CDs and such, but the unknown songs get very, very little play in Rock Band.

I only played 1 and 3, but Onimusha 3: Demon Siege is by far the best of those 2 and IMHO 1 of the best games on the PS2. The 3rd game also features Jean Renaud who does a very good voice acting job. If you decide to play the 1st I'd skip the PS2 game and play Genma Onimusha for the Xbox instead, which was really like a Director's cut of the PS2 game; it's also BC. Be warned that the 1st game is deceptively easy for much of the game in that you can choose to avoid certain battles that make it more or less impossible to defeat the final boss if skipped. The controls in the 1st game are also very much like the moving human tank controls in RE games. I was able to adapt to them, but some friends of mine gave up.

I fired off an email to all my friends who join me at my place for regular Rock Band parties and so far every response has been negative ("Why can't they release anything that's not over 20 years old", etc). We're all in our mid-twenties. I was actually born in 1982 and thus have no familiarity with this Priest album at all.

That's completely understandable, and it's how I felt when I saw them release several garage band types of modern bands I'd never heard of. I just skipped those weeks. However, Judas Priest for me was in the very midst of my high school years, and was extremely popular during that time. There is a huge chunk of RB players that are in their late 30's, thru early-mid 40's who will buy this.

I completely agree that there's a whole demographic of late 30's thru early-mid 40's that needs to have their fix. But since the beginning of March they've released Blondie, The Police, Skynyrd, Boston, and the Grateful Dead. The other two packs were the Thrash Pack (very niche) and the Harmonix Pack which includes very obscure bands. Nothing wrong with lesser-known bands, but I wouldn't call them first-class DLC releases.

Speaking as a member of the mid-twenties crowd, we feel neglected. And then they go ahead and announce three albums today, all of which are tunes that appeal to the over 30 crowd again. It would have been so much better if they would have announced the Priest album, Nevermind, and then (just for example) a 10-song collection from Stadium Arcadium. Something for everyone there and I think it would be hard to argue that they're catering to only one particular audience.

Well, they may be catering to one particular agr bracket, but I don't think they're catering to one particular audience.  There have been a lot of styles of music available.

I think there are two basic reasons why they've gone further back for most songs.  A) They're trying to get "classics" and as such, newer songs don't fit that bill.  I know, I know there are a lot of not so known songs on the list, too, but that leads to the second reason: 2) The guys making this are probably all in their 30s and 40s as well, and they're picking their own classics and working in the genres and with the songs that they are familiar with, because that will let them get the most out of them.
