Any give Tank Beat a try on the DS?  It's real-time strategy with 3D graphics.  Just curious.

Since I don't have a desk nearby to attach it to I got my ironing board out and pressed ( biggrin ) it into service as a stand.  Worked out really well since I could adjust the height to my prefered location and it can be stored away quickly once I'm done racing.  I did have to put a thin book between the clamp and the bottom of the ironing board because the tightening screw on the clamp couldn't get enough grip on the thin surface of the board.

I'm actually considering a wheel now because of this.  The ironing board is in the TV room.  Frequently right next to the couch.  If storage of the wheel weren't a big PIA...of course, I could move the damned Steel Battalion controller from our trunk/coffee table to the basement.  Hmm.  This requires some thought.

How do the pedals fit under the ironing board?

Gamespot drops a 6.8 and Eurogamer (one of the few sites I respect) drops a 6? No thanks, no forum effect in the world is going to convince me at this point.

In fairness, though, the Gamespot review seems to have a big problem with improper license use (not letting go, in other words), ending the review with this line:
Perhaps the most telling aspect of Shadowrun comes from WizKids, the maker of the other Shadowrun stuff. When the game was first unveiled last year, it alerted Shadowrun fans that this might not be for them by posting "fair warning, however: Microsoft rewrote the timeline and setting for this game, so it is not in continuity with the tabletop RPG. It may be more accurately described as a game loosely based on Shadowrun."

The Eurogamer review seems more balanced, but it does seem to boil to the game seeming to be overpriced for what you get.  He even ends with:
And while I'm happy I played it, for this price, I probably wouldn't.

But the forum consensus seems to be that the game is a load of fun despite the limited number of maps.  With a game like this, by the time the price comes down to $30, you'll be jumping into a game filled with "experts" who know the nuances of character, tech and map. Is it worth the wait?  Maybe.  I have to say, though, that what should give this game longevity is the incredible balance of play styles they've set up.  There are so many options to choose from, and what the other team chooses and what your team needs will affect what you choose.  Even so, once you think you've got a character down, you'll find a situation where that's proven wrong and you'll have to rethink your standard choices.  That already happened to me.  I was very happy going in as a troll for most of my games, but then I was the focus of attack too often, so I switched to the elf.  Now I'm giving the human a shot.  Or maybe the dwarf.

First let me preface by saying that I liked the DiRT demo a lot more than the Forza2 demo.  However, the description of the multiplayer leaves me cold.  Forza2 has been ridiculously fun online just because of the sense of racing with other people.  Racing against the clock just doesn't seem as exciting.  Are they doing it this way just for the rally races, or for the buggy races too, which had multiple cars on the track in the demo?

Also, the game looks gorgeous and the racing model seems fine, but does anyone know about the "game"?  Will you get to buy cars, upgrade, tweak or anything like that?  I'm leaning towards buying it when it comes out, but I'm playing a lot of Forza2.

I just got my copy of OXM that has the review of Dirt (9.0) and they said that the multiplayer for this version is limited to the 100-person time trials for rally and hill climb events.  Codemasters hopes to get full competitive online into the next version, apparently.

They say that the career mode is a pyramid series of races where you earn points to advance and cash to buy new cars.  There is also a rally Championship mode "which lets you set up full-bore rallies replete with between-stage repairs".  I'm sure that neither will be to the depth that Forza is, but this is a different type of game.

While I am pretty disappointed about the multiplayer being so limited (I still think its going to be fun), the career sounds just fine to me-its not really appreciably different than a lot of other racers so long as you can buy and tune your cars-getting points for races is just fine. Don't be too upset TML, it still sounds awesome-9.0 baby!

I just wrote in the Forza 2 forum that I'm more of an SP guy, anyway.

I tried to join you guys last night, thanks to Ike's invite, but I couldn't get into the race.  It was nice watching you, though.  Worked out for the best, because I had just switched cars in my garage for a race and couldn't get to my very slightly souped VW.  Also, with the fan on, my mike is nothing but an irritant for others, so I had it off.  Not sure why I logged on, actually...

I did race some kids in another online race the other night, and was spanked pretty badly.  I have a hunch I'll be sticking with SP on this one.

I wasn't sure I was liking it at all, but I sat down for a couple of races last night and wound up finishing Proving Grounds  and doing the first set of races on the next level (amateur?).  It was going to be one or two races, and it turned into two and a half hours.

Here's what I'm thinking.  Since it's multiplayer only, they may be waiting until they can experience it full on with others (instead of just LANning within the office) before writing up the review.

Also, as I like to say online, because I have no memory... my laptop has a lot more RAM than I do!  So sometimes I have to look up stuff I really already know, but have no way to dredge it back up into current memory.

This is a major reason I use guides.  I play a lot of games at once.  Many's the time I've gone back to a game and had no recollection of what I was doing next.  A guide is like a really informative bookmark.

BTW, is there any way to get that Best Buy $10 gift card without printing that thing out?  I don't have a printer at home and my work computer is only hooked into a specialty printer.

You can use the coupon online.  I think you can use it for in-store pickup, too.

I was looking at the metacritic page for Blitz, and while the average scores were fairly low (69), most of the knocks on the game were that it was an uninspired port, but that it was fun if you hadn't played the original.  Since I never played the original, I just may keep it.  I don't expect there will be much multiplay, but I should be able to squeeze a few nerd points out of it at least.

I went with Blitz for the same reason.  That, and I already had everything else I wanted.  Also, I just found out Circuit City rang my order up wrong, and I saved an extra $13!

I've picked up all the previous Gamecube entries, but I rarely actually play them.  If my four year old was a little better at controlling the Wii, I'd jump at this.  She has a hard enough time with Cooking Mama.  Fast-paced mini-games are going to be too much for her, I think.  I'll wait for MP9.  The Wii controls will probably be more all-inclusive by then anyway.

I had exactly the same reaction when I first saw combat footage from Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, but those game ran fine upon release.  I agree that a choppy framerate can ruin an otherwise great game, even a turn-based one, so hopefully Bioware will continue the trend and get all their technical issues ironed out before the game ships.

The framerate in KOTOR was not great.  In fact, it was one of the big complaints for most gamers and reviewers.

I am leaning to feeling comfortable telling people it OK to buy this game. Their marketing strategy was horrendous, unless their plan was to use the MaryKay strategy (friend tell a friend) disgust.

The game is fun it will difinatly change the way you play your FPS.
Here is one of my coolest oh shit moments last night. 2 Bot had me cornered and closing in fast I quickly  telaported up to the lvl above x-ray visioned down for a fix on their position. Teleported down behind them and took out one bot. The other must have did the same strategy I did because I could not find him (should have used my X-ray vision now I think about it) All of a sudden I am getting hit with bullets, so I teleported through the nearest wall to get my bearings x-rayed vision to find his position to my surprise he had already revived the other guy I first killed. I forgot you had to finish them off. The game ended with a series telaports, gliding into positions and separating the two and crossing my fingers that the guy I am going after is the one that did the reviving. Because if I took him out the other one will bleed out and die. Lucky for me I got the right guy and destroyed his body. Lots of FUN.

The maps I've been training on seems small but somehow they work out fine. The key is to learn teleporting  gliding and being able to aim on Que. My foot is in my mouth guys, the game is mad fun.

I'm with you.  I think it's okay to say this is pretty damn cool.  I've only worked through the training (about to finish the elf training, in fact).  As you go through, it gets a little overwhelming, but it's going to be a simple matter of figuring out what I like to use best and mostly sticking to it.  Teleporting is damn cool, though, and very useful with x-ray vision.  I may choose the link tech as my third option and play as a troll.  Still deciding.

I had a similar experience as yours, but the room was filled with enemy bots.  I was using old shooter mentality and tried to duck and shoot on the same level for a while.  That really knocked my health down.  The meter was beeping at me pretty frequently.  Then I switched tactics and began teleporting up, using x-ray, then dropping in behind a bot, taking him out, and popping back up to regroup.  It was a real nail-biter.  I had a sliver of health left when I finally took the last guy down.
14259  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Hour of Victory **demo this coming wednesday** on: May 31, 2007, 02:35:29 PM
I was looking forward to this, on the other hand (not sure what the problem is with Midway...I enjoyed the Area 51 demo a lot, and I'm having fun with Mortal Kombat for the Wii, not to mention Unreal Tournament, The Suffering and lots of others).  However, I have to agree it's not very good.

When you start, you choose from three classes.  In the descriptiona, they're all very different.  I chose the Ranger, because I thought it would be cool to use the grappling hook and move around on the rooftops.  I never found a way to grapple.  Never made it onto a roof.*  The sniper site moved insanely slowly (though changing the sensitivity helped).  Didn't have a problem with FOV, though.

A few other "Huh?" moments: There a random comment to stand still for healing when the screen turns red.  They're being very literal.  You cannot crouch and heal.  I got stuck on nothing one time as a grenade was thrown my way, died, then was taken to the character select screen again.  I went back to a checkpoint that was further back than what I'm sure was the checkpoint.  I thought I'd play as the Commando from that checkpoint, but found I still had the sniper rifle.  I can shoot someone in the elbow with the sniper rifle, and it's like a headshot.  And right before you get to what I thought was the checkpoint, this British bloke starts annoying you by saying, "This way, hurry" every three seconds until you walk through the doorway to trigger the cut scene.

The graphics ain't so hot, either.  The scenery looks okay, but not great.  The characters are very weak.  And the death animations are almost ridiculous.  Sniper shot to the head?  Naturally, they'd launch in the air a few feet clutching their stomach.  Oh, and there are lots of crates (made me miss Old Man Murray).  None the less, graphics can be improved from their state in a demo, so I always look at that stuff with a grain of salt.

Anyway, like metallicorphan, I love me some WWII shooters, but this one's going to have to be very far improvement from what I've seen here to get me to buy it.

*Edit to add: When I thought I was playing the Commando, I finally found one hotspot that let me climb up.  I was more exposed than I had been on the ground.  And the Ranger's amazing jumping ability which is supposed to let me jump from rooftop to rooftop, let me jump on the ground.

Rally racing typically has people start at staggered intervals so that you're not near other cars.  You race for time.

I really really don't understand why the sport isn't more popular in America, it's so much more fun to watch than NASCAR.  Better crashes, too.

I think you answered that in your own post.  Americans like to see the defeat.  Just beating a number isn't as exciting as watching one car win while the others lose.  Though how racing in a circle for hours on end is interesting to anyone, I'll never know.

According to Midway's Steve Allison new IP isn't profitable:

“According to our numbers, the actual success rate of new IP over the past four years is just seven percent. In other words, 93 percent of new IP fails in the marketplace. So while the 90-plus review scores and armfuls of awards create the perception that titles like Psychonauts, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami and other great pieces of work were big successes, the truth is that they were big financial disappointments and money losers.”

And the Sun rises in the east too. Seriously(and this is directed at the Midway guy) could he be more obvious? How many new TV shows come out every year and then get canceled? Yet they keep coming because they have to replace the old stuff eventually. Most new IP's in any media will fail, but the ones that do can make money for a long time and be very profitable. Thats the whole point. Keep trying till you hit the jackpot or something close to it.

Yeah, but, apart from the original Star Trek redos (and how well are those doing, anyway?), they can't really just rehash successful shows like you can in the VG Industry.  But when someone does "hit the jackpot" with a new IP, every one else essentially tries to rehash it with a newer coat of paint.  Heroes was a big success this year.  Care to guess how many Sci-Fi related shows are hitting the major nets next year?

As for this Riddick thing, I loved the first.  If there's a significant change to gameplay I'd jump at the new one, but by that I mean 30% plus of new gameplay.  And a multiplayer component won't do it for me (though it would certainly help in most people's cases, I think).  This is my official opinion.  Unofficially, I'll probably reluctantly cave and buy the damn thing anyway.

After you clear a level, do the monsters respawn (in other words, if I want to get back to level 5, do I have to keep fighting monsters from levels 1 - 4 to do it)?  Also, do monsters respawn before you clear a level?  Usually in these games, I like to spend some time cranking my stats before continuing, just to make the game a little easier.  I'm wondering if that's even possible for this.

Also, has anyone seen a strategy guide in stores?

This really is a stellar game, totally in the vein of Ruins of MYth Drannor, Dungeon Master SNES, and the whole Bards Tale series. Its hard as hell, but plays the same and the skills add tons of depth. I also enjoy that the loot you find in dungeons unlocks new tiers of items at the store, forcing you to level up your guys and upgrade yourselves before you progress, giving you a real feeling of accomplishment, past the whole "mapping" an entire dungeon.

This makes me miss Lands of Lore......

Oh, now, see I loved Lands of Lore.  Now the pendulum is swinging...

You attempt a saving throw against Gaming Trend Forum Effect!
You roll a 1! Critical failure!

I hate you all. I really do. biggrin

I'm still shaking the die, myself.  Some things about this game appeal to me greatly (the mapping, which I guess is fairly easy to do, you just have to do it), the fact that it's OG.  Some things are keeping me away (the difficulty, the strategizing about so much minutiae, actually needing to use items and revive your characters).  I have a fear that my patience will not be able to take all the negative issues.

Well, I was going to get the re-envisioning on the PS2, but I'll wait for the Wii version now so I can get some comparisons with the controls. Hopefully, doubtfully though, they will make the engine run even better on the Wii.

Some notes from the interview, Eidos was late getting the dev kits ( which probably is why we are getting announcements later than we'd like ) . Also acknowledge that this is another PS2 port, but it could still be a pretty cool thing with the wii-controls.

I hope they give us an option to play with standard controls.  And that the graphics are at least as good as the PS2, and, hopefully, better.
