XBLA this week is Track & Field.  I'll whup Purge at the javelin.

This Xbox LIVE Arcade Wednesday, gamers can log virtual track time and exercise their fingers and thumbs with the highly anticipated “Track & Field” from Konami. Originally released in 1983, Track & Field was an arcade smash. The updated version for Xbox LIVE Arcade features the same button mashing game mechanic as the original, and now allows for up to four player multiplayer competition on one Xbox 360 or over Xbox LIVE. Clocking in at 400 Microsoft Points, “Track & Field” will be available to download on Xbox LIVE Arcade this Wednesday, August 8 beginning at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. PDT).

Later this month, we're getting Ecco the Dolphin, War World, and Hexic 2 (featuring battle mode?!)

What the hell ever happened to Hoop World?

Oh, um, my mistake.  They're already on the list.  Huh.  How did that happen?  Sometimes I feel like I'm stepping into the Twilight Zone.

You a Mega Man fan? I sure hope so, as that's pretty much the only thing coming out this week (and in 3 different versions!?):

Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars
Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Adventures of Lolo (VC)
Galaga '90 (VC)
Wave Race 64 (VC)

High School Musical: Makin' the Cut
Mega Man Star Force: Dragon
Mega Man Star Force: Leo
Mega Man Star Force: Pegasus
Pet Alien

Attack on Pearl Harbor
Mission: Combat Force
Virtual Villagers: The Lost Children

Thankfully there are some decent looking PSP games launching this week too, so this week isn't a total bust. Still not a single title I want to buy (thank goodness - trying to save for the big push in a few weeks).

So... What are you buying this week?

That HDD required label has been around a long time.  Don't know why people are just picking up on it now.  Here's a news article from February 06 about Football Manager which was the first HDD required game.  It's not a new trend you'll be seeing.  The number of Core Xboxes out there aren't a huge percentage by any means, but it's big enough to give anyone pause before saying "Yeah we're just going to cut them out."

I think it's because we're not all brilliant geniuses like you.  icon_wink

I do remember Football Manager had a HDD requirement, now that you mention it, but it's not a game that sticks in any nook of my brain.

According to the Bizarre website:

We've never had to cut content to fit on the disc, and we probably never will.

In a related story, it appears that "HDD Required" labels are going to start appearing on 360 games.  Here's the link to that:

14210  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Fatal Inertia demo on Live on: August 02, 2007, 04:06:46 PM
I am decidedly underwhelmed.

Of course, it may be due to my skills.  I was slamming into rocks constantly and couldn't get any of the weapons to fire, though I know I went over the weapon loaders.  The night level was so dark, I could barely see where the hole in the giant rock walls were, so that didn't help.

The graphics are not quite as dazzling as I would have hoped.  Very bland, IMO.  I would have liked to see a different map type, too, instead of three race types on one map.  I'm sure the texture pop-in that happens at the start of the race will be fixed by the time of release, but it really takes you out of the game.

Overall, I'm not sure why their seems to be enthusiasm for this game.  But then, I rarely like these futuristic racers.  Mostly cause I suck at them.

Also, the ending was pretty sweet. The nuclear explosion was cool, and the surprise visit from Grudge girl in the helecopter was a nice touch. Also when you finish the credits there is something about the prototype being successful? I didn't quite understand that part.

Um, spoiler much?

I just finished FEAR in preparation for the expansion/sequel coming to the 360.  I agree with most of the comments here, though.  Monolith was a company that was knocking them out of the park in originality and design and then not.  I think Condemned was one of the better 360 launch games, but there wasn't that much meat on the bones.  The story in this didn't hook me at all.  Part of the problem for that is the fact that the music and sound effects were louder than the information transmissions and phone messages, so I couldn't hear a lot of the background (very annoying that there was no way to fix that and that the subtitles didn't extend to these).  Also, creepy girls are very cliched now.  And if they start breathlessly singing a nursery rhyme, I'm out.  The ending was very good, though, but that's not enough to make up for the little interest I had in the story up to that point. The graphics were a little boxier than I would have liked, and the ladder animation pulled me out of the game every time.  The level design wasn't the best, but I didn't hate it.   My big gripe, gameplay-wise, is the challenge level.  It seemed too hard at the beginning and again in the middle, but the end was pretty easy.

Oddly, though, I would say I enjoyed the game.  If they can get a stronger story and fix most of these problems in the expansion, I'll be in.

didn't they pretty much stink?  I seem to remember being warned not to bother getting them.

I think that was the Wii version.  The Xbox and 360 versions were actually pretty good.  I thought the levels were all a little longer than necessary, though.  there was a point on each one where I sighed and said, "Really, it's not over yet?"  Not that the level design was bad or anything, but I just like my FPS levels to be a little more on the brief side.

The swan dive doesn't bother me.  Know why?  It's a game.  First of all, it's a human being diving into a hay cart from a height that would kill him.  Hay wouldn't stop him.  How did he get there?  Why running over conveniently located planks and beams and rooftops, of course, all laid out in a way that got him to his path.  Instead, he could have gotten into a group of monks that have nothing better to do than wander around a particular section of the city in a very tight circle.  So tight, in fact, that they wouldn't even notice someone not of their order slipping into their group.  Of course, it'll go pear shaped at some point, that's why he'll have to fight a group of men who attack one at a time instead of using the moments he's distracted to kill him.  Eventually, he'll get to the target though and may have to give chase through conveniently open doorways and conveniently tippable ox-carts and conveniently throwable crowds.  But he'll know where that guy is because of the very natural white glow that he emits.  Frankly, I like some unbelievability in my games.

14216  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Darkness on: July 19, 2007, 05:14:28 PM
I'm also not liking the main character.  The problems I have with him are three-fold.  His little quips in the load screens are a little trite (the NYC subway is like dodgeball?  Come on...), he lips rarely move when he talks, and his hair.  He comes off as a bit of a poser to me.  He was mumbling something about the subway being like a plate of spaghetti, and I was thinking I wanted to smack him.  Then he said his uncle used to smack him when he said things like that.  At least that made me laugh, but probably not for the right reasons.  This guy never deserved Jenny.

Even with that guy, I'm loving the game, but not quite as intensely as Riddick.  The powers are neat, but not completely useful.  The minions don't seem to do a hell of a lot.  The game's a little looser in the level design, too.  It would probably help things if I could move through the empty level at a decent speed.  The lack of a run button drives me to the brink of insanity sometimes.  I cannot figure out why they capped his movement speed at such a slow pace (I guess that makes a fourth fold for not liking the main character).

I think the WWI level was cool, too.  But as I move through the third chapter, I'm thinking Kevin may be right.  After a kick ass opening and a nice scene with Jenny and the orphanage, and the WWI chapter, it seems to be devolving a little.

It seems like I have a lot of negative things to say and nothing specifically positive, but I think that's because the game is good and these things are holding it back from being great, and that's frustrating.

14222  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nervous Brickdown on: July 18, 2007, 04:11:47 PM
I guess it depends on what you're shooting for.  If you're looking to just get to the end of the levels, you could probably do it in a long evening.  This game plays great in 10 to 20 minute bursts, though.  I like to unlock things.  There are points to earn on each level that will unlock special abilities.  There are also medals to gain (with different requirements for each world).  If you like going for those types of challenges, you could get quite a bit of extra play.  It's not going to last you a month, but the time spent will be quality.  The 10 levels that Gamespot mentions are really more like 10 worlds, I think.  Each world has 9 levels and a boss encounter.

As to the other comments in the positive Gamespot review, there are moments where luck is going to carry you through.  A couple of the ghost levels were giving me fits, and that damned shark was driving me nuts, until I realized I could tap him a bunch of times to kill him and make him disappear.  So far, the frustrating levels are well-paced with non-frustrating ones and add to the "well, just one more try" addiction to the game.  Since the game saves after three levels, it never feels like you're too far back when you have to start over.

As for the comment that it hasn't been scoring great, I've only seen one review that wasn't good.  1Up.  Everyone else has it ranking above 70%.  Many are in the 80 - 90 % range.  The average on Gamerankings is 74%, and that's with the surprisingly low score from 1Up.

ARISE, topic, ARISE!

So, they posted the manual for Wing Commander: Arena (not sure why there's a manual for an XBLA game, but it exists).

They definitely got the Wing Commander feel right.  I hope that feel finds its way into the game (even the communication panel screenshots alone would be good).

One page got me very excited, though, for that other great futuristic Origin game, Crusader: No Remorse.  Page 39.  Is this a sign that they're thinking of reviving that game as well?  That would be fantastic!
14224  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nervous Brickdown on: July 18, 2007, 03:26:16 AM
Gamespot's review is up.  7.5.

I've played through the ghost level and the water level now.  The variety is amazing.  In the ghost level you have to blow to clear the ghosts away and make some of the gold boxes appear you need for a medal.  At the end, you have to bounce against a coffin to free something within.  In the water level, there are people on platforms.  Your paddle is a submarine.  As the ball bounces and knocks the platforms, the people fall.  You have to catch them twice with the sub to save them.  You can only lose three before you lose the level.  Also, there's a shark.

My hope is that TP's lack of voice acting is due to its cube roots. I hope the next game in the series will have voice acting (sans Link of course). With Metroid Prime 3 apparently having voice acting for dialog, it gives me hope.

I thought the same thing with Wind Waker and the N64.

I've had a hard time connecting with this Zelda game, myself, but I love the others (even Wind Waker, though the end-slog was a bit much).

I will say that my interest grew once I picked up
Spoiler for Hiden:
the spinning disc that you ride.
I don't know why, I guess that just felt innovative.

I think my problem may stem from an increasing concern with all Nintendo games.  I'm getting tired of reading all the voices.  I think Nintendo needs to take the plunge at some point and lock onto a voice for each of their characters.  The Mario characters already have voices, really.  It's not that hard to do.

My child just turned 4.  She's reading, but not at the level required by most of these supposedly child-geared video games.

If Nintendo's really trying to make their games pick up and play by anyone, they're going to have to stop making lazy game players read.

Good impressions.

There's a funeral toward the beginning that reminded me a lot of the death sequence form the early (pre-FMV) Wing Commander games.  The shot looks the same as the one from my memory.

I also like this game a lot, but the long missions may be a bit more than I'm looking for in a game like this.

The mayhem is helped considerably by the optional "Preferred Next Target" arrows (kind of a double chevron deal).  I never would have found the missiles in the first mission without them, for example.  I hope those don't go away.

The story feels a little more ever-present than in most space flight sims I've played.  Cheesy or not, that's a good thing in my book.

The only thing that worries me is that they are working hand in hand with Lucas on this.  He kind of redeemed himself after the Jar Jar incident but hopefully you don't end up with a comic relief side kick, or if you do it's more like HK and less like an Ewok.

The Star Wars license on any game gives it a greater than 50% chance to suck, especially lately.

Lego Star Wars I & II, Empire at War & Exp., Battlefront 1 & 2, Republic Commando, and there's one series I'm forgetting...what was it?  Oh, yeah, KOTOR.

That's from 2005 on.  The only ones I didn't include are the Ep 3 game, which wasn't bad, Lethal Alliance, which was okay, and Galaxies.

so,hopefully when actually starting from the beginning i can get to learn how everything is and enjoy it even more

still very much looking forward to this

Is there such a thing as Tanking in a turn-based J-rpg?

Won't the mob on its turn just strike who it wants?
How would tanking work?

Do they have certain spells that make the mob hit them on the next round?

well what i noticed was i would do all the group with normal attacks, and it seemed that the funny cat type character(far left) was a lot stronger,he always did in the 300s worth of damage on the boss battle, while the star of the show(second from left) was average,he did a little less than the cat type thing while the others, seemed a lot less stronger, they were doing 70-80 damage(this is all without the building up strength thing)

though i only had a quick half hour,so this weekend i can hopefully fully get to grips with the demo

My cat guy kept getting the kitty litter knocked out of him.  All the baddies went after him hard.

Well I've played Ace Combat since the original game on Playstation 1. This new one definitely feels like every other iteration of the series. A big part of whether you will like the new one or not will come down to how accepting you are that it is just more of the same AC formula. I'm a big fan of the series and while the new game seems to be more of the same, I am okay with that. Ace Combat has never been about ultra realism, or even anything vaguely resembling a full blown PC-like flight sim experience. That being said, the graphics are simply stunning. The planes and the terrain look photo-realistic. It's truly incredible how good it looks. Since I am an Ace Combat fan and a graphics whore, this game will be a day one purchase for me.

The terrain looks great until you get close to the ground.  Especially in cities.  It's been the same stories for years: a few 3D buildings, the rest are just textures.

I tried again last night, and I still found the enemy detection system unclear.  Yes, I saw the red text, but I could never figure out who was close to me and who was far away, or who was a friend or foe in a cluster.  Granted, you can't really shoot at a friend, but situational awareness is still a little unclear.  The radar map helps in that regard, but I prefer to get information from the HUD.

I was so excited to see such a long list yesterday, but there's really not a lot up there that has me excited.  10 Hammers is probably the one I'm most interested in.  There are some good games on the list, if you've never played them, but nothing that has me excited to get back to.  Oh, except Morrowind! Does anyone know if this extends to the GOTY edition? The only problem is I'm sure I won't be able to transfer my old saves over. I did play Guilty Gear last night, hoping somehow that they'd fixed the edge of the screen bug, but it doesn't look like it.
14240  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Stuntman: Ignition demo up on Live! on: July 12, 2007, 07:22:40 PM
I was surprised to find the Stuntman: Ignition demo up on Xbox Live this afternoon (it wasn't there this morning).

There are three levels to try.

While I wouldn't call it punishingly hard, there seems to be no way in hell to pull it off on one playthrough.  The levels provided seem to be just the right length, though, and there is no reload on a restart, which is a huge plus.  If you want five stars on a level, you have to pull of a continuous string of stunts from the first straight through to the end.  The string meter resets if there is no stunt for 2 seconds.  That seems a little short to me.  There are a lot of things that can add to it, though, apart from the mandated moves for the shot.  There are some moments of frustration that happen, but none that don't seem "fair," even if they do seem a little nitpicky at times.

It looks great and runs smoothly.  The HUD gives pretty clear indications of what moves you're expected to pull off.  Things like scrape a car, run the gap between two cars, knock out those support beams, drive through the flaming barn, pull a 180, etc.  The graphics are pretty damned impressive, IMO.  There's a lot going on, but it never feels overwhelming to the eye.

I was mildly interested in this title, and I would say that interest has gone way up.  This seems to be a very polished gameplay experience already.
