Anubis II, which I believe is the first in a series about the dogheaded pharoah Anubis the Second, is purportedly a platformer for the Wii.  It's cleverly priced at $20 with bright, colorful pictures on the box.  It is very alluring in a Hey-it's-only-twenty-dollars-how-bad-can-it-be kind of way.  Of course, if you had the information before thinking that thought, you would know how bad it is: bad.

I love platformers.  Even mundane ones that get reviews like "typical" and "not innovative" and "jump around, shoot baddies, collect things - been there, done that."  I have been there, and it's a place I enjoy hanging out.  I'll do that again and again. 

Anubis II has made the monumentally poor decision to map the jumping controls to the nunchuck.  But wait, you say, though probably not out loud unless you're on a chatty basis with your computer, other games have mapped jumping to the chuck - even with a flick of the wrist.  Yes, but those other games weren't platform games about precision jumping.  They also didn't make you flick your wrists twice to double jump.  They also also didn't make you move with the chuck's control stick and jump at the same time in acrobatic maneuvering onto platforms that are very difficult to gage, distance-wise.

But that's not even the biggest problem, the Wii remote is used for all attacks in the same way as Zelda.  You know how satisfying it is to flick the remote and swing the sword as Link, knocking into the bad guys repeatedly?  Imagine if the remote didn't register your swing.  Frequently.  Add to that the whole "difficult to gage, distance-wise" bit from the last paragraph and apply it to approaching bad guys, and you have what my four year old calls a recime for disastoh. 

I'm going to go back to EB and beg the manager to let me do a rare exchange.  I'm hoping to get the untested Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire.  Hell, I'm already $20 in the hole.  For $20 more, how bad can it be?

Picked up the game over the weekend and loving it so for.. only 5 or 6 hours played so far I think, but I know more about skateboarding than I ever knew before. The game is pretty hard to me, but also forgiving of failure. I had a photo challenge where I needed hop onto a concrete slap, do a manual then gap to the street and I swear I tried that 50 or 60 times but at least I was able to keep making laps around trying rather than clicking through failure and retry prompts (though you do have to click a couple times for a video failure as it resets the start point each time).

Tough game, pretty game, lovin it.

I replayed that section a bunch, too.  Strangers kept walking into my path, which was very annoying.  I had a hard time circling around, so I did restart each time.

I have to say, the challenge level of this game will undoubtably be what eventually stops me from playing.  I've redone some challenges for more than an hour, and I know that's going to turn into diminishing returns.  At this point, though, I keep coming back to it.

For Mercs 2, I had been hearing rumblings that it didn't capture what the first game was.  The sandbox feel was missing, I think.  Hopefully, the delay is a realization that they have to provide what the fans are expecting if they want to milk this series to death...

I tried this, not expecting much at all, but it's actually pretty fun.  From what I can gather, the mini-games are connected by a series of races with a Mario Kart feel (though you're on feet for the race).  You can also jump, which makes a bigger difference than you'd think.  The turning is a little spazzier than I would like, but it's not a deal breaker.  The mini-games were all pretty clever and fun.  Not an ugly mess like the crappy Fuzion Frenzy games.  I could see this one making an impact in the Party crowd.  Problem is, I don't know how big of a crowd that is anymore.

Yeah except for the fact that SimCity for the DS was crap and people were either disappointed or didn't buy it.  Any search of these forums will back that up.  I think there was maybe one thread on it?

Gamerankings has it at 71%, and the two big sites each gave it 70%.  I can't speak for it myself.  As for the other part of your statement, clearly people did buy it, since that's why EA decided to release Populous, apparently.

This is fantastic news, IMO.  I remember my girlfriend driving us to a store an hour away to pick up Populous.  Somehow, I got her over that, and she married me anyway.

Even though they're different genres, it got me thinking that if this trend continues, maybe we'll see Syndicate?!  Or the Crusader series?!

I played a couple of levels of Dewy's Adventure today.  It seems like a polished, fun game.  The voiceovers in the opening sequence are deadly, but that seems to be more of a framing sequence, so I don't think we'll hear much of them.  The cut scene graphics are static, but beautiful.  The game itself is colorful and cheery.  The mechanics are pretty neat.  You tilt the controller, of course, and control of the little guy seems fairly spot-on.  He jumps with the 2 button and can stomp from a jump with the 1.  There have been some misjudged jumps that have been frustrating, and I'm not sure what to attribute that to.  It may be the shadow comes into focus too late, but it may also be that I'm a clod.  You can make the world cold by pushing down on the d-pad.  This turns Dewy into ice, which seems to be better for fighting bad guys.  It also blankets snow on the world or freezes puddles that would otherwise absorb Dewy.  It can even affect some of the baddies, freezing them if they're stunned, for example.  How can you stun them, you ask?  By pushing up on the d-pad, the world gets hot and Dewy turns to steam.  He can't really move (unless you shake the controller to create wind, maybe, but I haven't tried that technique yet), but by holding the 1 button, you can cast lightning in an ever-increasing area.  That'll kill some baddies and stun others.  The goal seems to be freeing 100 little acorn-dudes on each level (or at least as many as you can).  The worlds seem to be growing more complex as it goes.  Hopefully, it won't get too confusing.  Or challenging.  I've already had to replay a couple of levels, and I know these are the walks in the park.  Time will tell if it gets too frustrating, but right now it's pretty fun.

I'm hesitant to be too excited early on with this, because I don't want anyone to think it's a must have (and I'm sure bad reviews will come and make me look like an idiot who likes anything), but this game is fun like Sega Bass Fishing, though not quite as good.  Very arcady, but there are lots of fish (and other things) to catch, missions/challenges to complete, areas to unlock.  The biggest drawback is that it is not real time casting.  You throw the line as you'd expect (Hold B/Pull Back then Throw Forward/Release B) then watch the cast happen.  It feels pretty good, though.  I usually feel like a long cast happens because I released at the right time, for example.  Reeling in is done with the nunchuck (or with the d-pad if you don't feel like using the 'chuck).  The graphics are decent, but not fantastic.  I could have used more detail at the fishing spots.  And I would have preferred a more active shot for landing the fish.  Instead you get a cutscene of the thing leaping out of the water, then a shot with a stat screen.  There's nothing to really compare it to, though, so you have to go by the numbers for size.  Reeling it in is where the action is and they've made it active and pretty fun, so far.  You hook it by pulling back then watch a bar at the top of the screen as you reel-in.  If it drops too low, the fish will escape.  If it goes to high the line breaks.  Meanwhile, you respond to cues on the sides of the screen telling you to jerk left and right.  I've yet to try a tournament, as I'm still trying to land all the fish in at least one of the three areas I've unlocked so far.  If you've been interested in a fishing game on the Wii, this is worth a look.

My only wish at this point would be to switch the A+X buttons to the shoulders.  Picking up speed using the shoulder buttons would make the switch back to the right stick less awkward.

+1.  Seriously, Dirt and Forza are in Console Gaming, but the most arcadey racer to come down the pike gets banished (yes, banished) to sports?  Luh-ame indeed.

After watching the technical vids on XBLM, I was impressed.  The regular vids didn't do much for me, but the technical ones showed they've been putting a lot of effort in to get these to play right.

I placed sixth on both tracks.  It was a little too challenging for me, maybe, but some of that will change when I get used to the handling.  It'll help if there are difficulty options, too.

Overall, this seems like a tight little racer.  The reviews have been good so far, too.

I don't consider that a platformer, but maybe you do and already have it.  Otherwise it fills every one of your criteria except for multi-play (though the strategy side is pretty light, too).

First of all, this game is not at all what I was expecting.

It's a 2D sidescrolling beat 'em up in 3D.  I've got to say, while it was very simple and I'm not sure how well that's going to go over a full game, I had a lot of fun with the demo.  The graphics are simplistic, to say the least, but crisp and colorful.  The whole thing reminded me of Duke Nukem: The Manhattan Project, which was a very underrated 2D platformer in 3D.  It also reminded me a bit of Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu.  It's probably closer to that game, actually.  There are moves to unlock, it seems.  And partners.  Not sure why the enemies as teammates gimmick is here, but it works in a way.

I don't know that this is a $60 title, but I'm more interested than I was when the first trailer was released.  Back then, I was led to expect the game would be something to make up for Spidey 3, but it's a whole different animal.  It has a lighter, goofier tone in both style and feel.  Now that I know what to expect, I was a bit more open minded.  I had fun.  I could see this being a blast with two players.  If only I could convince the wife...

Well, the demo of skate has been out for a while.  The reviews have been pretty damn good so far (IGN and 1up).

The Tony Hawk Proving Ground demo hit XBLM today.  Overall, I'm impressed.  I thought I was done with TH games after the recent batch, but this one seems well polished and playable.  Nothing amazing or innovative, like I guess skate is, but it's like slipping into a comfortable pair of shoes that have held together well. 

The framerate was smooth throughout.  The area seemd well contained with a lot of potential areas to hit.  Something about the level design seemed tighter, somehow.  Like the overall city size might be big, but each area feels self-contained and unique, if that makes sense.

The "storyline" seems a little better than in previous games.  That "punk-ass" attitude (performed by non-punk ass voice over actors and stiff-as-a-board skateboarding professionals) is still there, of course, but they've dialed it down a bit.

I'm not sure why they've made it seem like you get to choose if you want to follow the rigger, career, or hardass storyline when, it appears, you can do all of them at the same time.  Frankly, I like it better that you can experience all of the game at once, instead of having to do multiple play-throughs.  I know I'd only go through once.  But I don't get why they're bothering with that whole "skate your way" motto.

The control is as good as it always has been.  As a bonus, I never got into one of those tight alleys where you can't actually turn around, you just keep bumping into the damn wall like Austin Powers wedging that trolley in the hallway.  That may just be a factor of the level provided, though.  I found the Nail The BlankTM (Wasn't that a question on Match Game) easier to use this time around, but it still seems like more of a hassle than it's worth.

Overall, nothing amazing or innovative at all, but I am looking forward to it.
