I've noticed.  Not only you but others as well.  I don't consciously do it.  I really don't let things that piss most people off about games ever get to me.  I buy a game because it looks like fun and I simply sit down and enjoy.  It really is that simple.  I could care less about bad voice acting, graphical glitches, it doesn't bring anything new to the table etc. etc. etc. & blah, blah, blah.  If it looks like it has a cool story and theme then I'm all over it.

I started playing the full game of Turok last night and it is a ton of fun in so many ways.  Story, characters, setting and game play.  I'm not going to bother posting detailed impressions anymore for any game.  The same people will come in and just tear everything apart.  All that counts is I'm enjoying this game a lot and glad I picked it up.  It just seems to me that nobody approaches games with an open mind anymore.  It seems that everyone is so quick to surgically dissect a game nowadays.  If it's not a huge prominent bonanza game like COD4, Rainbow Six iteration to the nth degree, Rock Band, Gears of War or any other main stream well known game with a huge MP element, then it will inevitably be considered a subpar game.  I'm sure those games are fun but to dismiss others because they don't compare to those games is just not right in my opinion.  That's how I see it.  I could be wrong.  Who knows.  All I know is I play what I enjoy.   icon_biggrin

A Shifty-Scale would be a cool idea.  It should focus on story, character and how emotionally involved one gets with the game because that is how I choose what to play.  icon_wink

I agree with your comments in the middle there, Shifty.  It's something that's been really gnawing at me lately (see my recent old man rant in the Fall of Liberty demo topic). 

I'm sorry that you're disheartened enough not to post impressions anymore, but I can see why you'd be there.  I'm happy you're still around though.

By the way, no hot witches in Turok so far, though.  Bummer, huh?

The reviews have been half-way decent for Turok, and I picked it up yesterday.  I have to say I'm enjoying it much more than the demo.  I played for a couple of hours and had a very good time.  It's not AAA caliber, so if your good meter no longer goes below COD4 or Bioshock, don't bother.  However, it is better than, say, Kane & Lynch (which itself is not even half as bad as people are claiming).  A lot of work went into this game.  

It seems like, much like with the recent Tomb Raider reboot, someone finally said, "You know, Turok is a cool concept that never really had a good game to go with it beyond the first (and even that one is stretching it)."  So they decided to make an A title.  

There is a story to it (though I know IGN says the story disappears), and so far I'm finding it interesting enough to keep me going.  I like the dynamic of being hated by a partner who would kill you if he didn't need you to stay alive.  I like the hunt for a former mentor.  I also like the dinosaurs.

I know we've seen them in games before, but I still get chills the first time I see a T-Rex stomping around.  It's just cool.

The graphics are pretty good.  It's not COD4, again.  There is a lot of sameness to the environments after awhile.  And a lot of green.  I just stumbled on a base I'm about to head inside, so hopefully that'll mix things up a bit.

I'm finding aiming to be a bit of a challenge, as there's no lock-on that I've noticed.  I know some people like that.  I'm just not used to it.  I may have to change the sensitivity, 'cause I feel like I overshoot the target too easily.  However, I wouldn't say combat is difficult.  Taking down dinosaurs can be tough, especially when they're hopping all over the place.  I find that using the old knife will work more ofter than a gun.  So far, bullets seem more plentiful than in the demo (I felt like I was always running out of ammo in the demo).  However, the logic in me doesn't understand why there would be any arrows anywhere, so I'm not using the bow as often as I probably should.

I tried MP last night for a bit.  It was fun, if fairly standard.  However, there were dinos running around, and they had no allegiance.  That was a neat addition.  There is co-op for those who jones for that feature.

Overall, I expected to play for about an hour yesterday, and I played for over three.  So I definitely had a good time.  Whoever wrote the comment "Meh, it's Turok" without taking the time to find out if they'd done anything to the Turok experience, should maybe take a look again.  Everyone else should at least give this one a rental.  Or just buy it if you're looking for a fun, cool distraction that would have been considered very before the end of an amazing 2007.

Turns out Turok may be out this week (Friday) for both the 360 and PS3.   I'm on the fence here.  I was hoping for a good Turok game, finally, but the demo left me a little cold.  Of course, I played a very early demo, so anything could happen.

I really, really enjoyed Bomberman Land for the DS, so I've been looking forward to the Wii version.  If the DS version isn't just the same game compacted, I'll probably get that, too, but down the road.  I do hope some reviews hit before I just buy it, though.  It was a careful balance of gameplay in the last one, they may not be able to pull it off again.

Man, are we spoiled.  Not all games are going to look and play like Call of Duty 4.  It's not fair to judge every FPS game that comes out by the incredibly high bar set by the excellent shooters from the end of 2007. 

I understand this is not a AAA title.  It may not even be a single A title.  However, it's not the largest pile of crap ever to stink its way onto the 360.  Play the Hour of Victory demo.  Then give this one a spin again.  They've tossed in atmosphere, story, and scripted elements aplenty.

The guy moves a little slowly.  It doesn't handle as gracefully as Halo 3.  The graphics are closer to first gen 360 (the phrase "Xbox quality" or even "PS2 quality" gets thrown around way too loosely, IMO).  Does any of that drop it down to "Coaster Award" status?  Sheesh.

I'm not saying the game'll be good.  It's a demo, who knows what the full game'll be like.  I'm not saying it'll be worth $60, if that's the price point.  It should probably be $40.  A lot of people may not think of buying it until it's $20.  But the crap being piled onto this little game is unbelievable.

Personally, as we're in the dry, post-Christmas period, I'm looking forward to any game that is half-way decent.  The atmosphere and story could be enough to overcome the standard gameplay for me.  If it can't for you, okay.  But why drag this little game through the mud instead of just saying it's not your style.

Sorry for the rant, but I've been noticing this trend a lot lately, and it's bugging me.

Actually, it's way too early for me to buy one, so I'm worried I'm going to miss out on the 60GB model.  It's looking like the 80GB may time out, though.  I'll probably be looking in March.

yeah, but a PS2 *does* take up another set of inputs on the TV.  so for people without video-switching receivers, it's just another potential hassle

Also, I have this thing called a wife, who is still being convinced that a PS3 is viable.  Another console on top of that will not work.

Now that Blu Ray has pretty much won the format war, I'm thinking about buying a PS3.  I have a couple of questions.

How is the Blu Ray player versus a separate one?  I've never been very fond of using the consoles for movies.  They don't feel dedicated enough.  However, I have heard that the PS3 will update to the latest features easily.  I'm wondering about picture/sound quality and noise level.  Any opinions?

Also, I've never owned a Playstation, and there are some PS2 games I'd like to play.  It seems the quickly becoming standard 40GB is out.  The 80GB has more problems than the 20 or 60GB, but how hard is it to find a 60GB model?  And are there other issues involved with going with a soon to be obsolete version?  BC is a big deal for me, so I doubt I'll be getting the PS3 if the 40GB is the only real option.

All of this probably won't happen for a month or two, but I'd love to get some ideas now.

I'm enjoying it a lot until I join a race.  Every time I pull a stupid move right before the finish or head off in the completely wrong direction with no chance of winning.  And every single time I curse the arrogant bonehead who needed to teach us how to race in a seamless world and not put a retry option in.  It seems to me that the whole point of racing is getting familiar with the tracks.  Learning them, so that you avoid the irritating pitfalls that have been set up on them.  Seriously, isn't game racing all about trial and error?

I played with my four year old last night.  She got very nervous because we got a note about sharks in the area.  I told her they weren't going to hurt us in the game. 

Then I just about shit my pants when a cut scene showed a humpback swimming above me.  I swam around the thing for five minutes oohing and awwing, trying to hitch a ride.  My daughter finally sighed, "Can we go find a shark?"  I guess she wasn't nervous anymore. 

Then we found the deep trench.  Creepy music, too dark.  She got scared, so I started to swim away.  But she said, all excited, "No, let's go down there!"  My daughter, the explorer.  Maybe Dora isn't as annoying as I think she is. 

Anyway, we didn't have the right equipment, so she was sad.  We played for about half an hour, and she loved it.  And she wasn't even swimming.

I've never played DMC before, but I have played similar games.  I can see where no loading would be great.  You'd have to force yourself to stop playing.

I had a lot of fun with the demo.  Looking forward to it.

I actually enjoyed this.  It's not a hundred percent polished, but I enjoyed the setting tremendously and the triggered actions, running down the skyscraper during the attack.  Very cool.

I played the first mission. 

The art style is where the love it/hate it thing comes in, I think.   It's extremely stylized.  It's cel-shaded.  It's also just so...irreverant.  You save by unzipping your pants and going to the bathroom, for example.  Actually, that's the most extreme example. There are also a lot of old-school video game sound effects tossed in.

It's over the top bloody.  Just geysers of the stuff after cleaving people in twain. 

The main character is a bit of an idiot.  There's a lot of pretentious, yet meaningless dialogue (I think that may come from translation).  The dialogue also goes on too long.  There was a conversation with a French lady over a cell phone that comes through the Wiimote speaker (which is pretty cool, IMO), but it went on for minutes and she repeated herself and was redundant and said the same thing over and over.  She was also saying things like, "Now prepare for entering the gates of madness..." when you were about to head poolside.

But the gameplay is incredibly fun.  Really very entertaining.  There's a tutorial early on, but there's not that much to remember.  Then you hack and slash away at a bunch of enemies, hitting the A or B button, holding the remote high or low depending on how they're defending.  Eventually, you wear them down and an arrow appears on the screen.  Swing the wiimote in the direction of the arrow and you cut them in half as they spill blood and money.

It's certainly an odd, entertaining game.  I remember reading one review that talked about showing this game to people when you show off your Wii.  I'm not so sure that NMH is a good choice for that.  I think without playing it, it would be off-putting, but even playing it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.

I posted in the other thread.  That is exactly what went down.  I called MS.  They looked up my account, saw that I had paid for the game already and gave me 800 points.  The whole thing took about fifteen minutes, but they seemed to be just getting used to doing it.  I'm sure it would take even less time at this point.

The demo came onto XBLM in North America yesterday.

I played it last night.  At first I was a little nervous, because I'm a methodical gamer, even in shooters.  I like to search through areas, find the nooks and crannies. The game design here doesn't allow for that. But as I played, I quickly fell into their mindset.  I think it'll be a lot of fun.  The missions are nice and short, so there's a lot of chance for replayability to beat your score or find more hidden targets.  And there seems like there will be a lot to do, though some of it may turn out to be more of the same.  There will be something like 8 - 10 areas, each with half a dozen missions or so and 6 - 8 characters to play through each one.  Is that going to be enough variety?  I don't know.  But this isn't the typical shooter with lengthy, objective based levels.   Sure you're in the same basic local, but you're seeing different sections of it.  And you have different objectives: beat the clock, crank your score, survive...  It's more like a racing game in shooter format.  Which makes sense, given that this is a Bizarre Creations game.  I'm looking forward to it.

I played this for about a half hour, maybe forty five minutes today.   I poked around two locations.  Found out the first level of info for most of the fish there (and one manta ray).  It's exactly what I was expecting.  Slow paced, awe-inspiring exploration. It's the kind of game you have to be in the mood for (at the wrong time, it'll induce a nap), but if that mood strikes you it's a lot of fun.

The graphics are great, with two caveats.  One, the standard addition of the phrase "...for a Wii game."  Two, the on boat graphics are a little weak.  No one moves their mouths when they talk (which should be forbidden in this day and age, unless you're making a game about Tony and Tia Castaway or some other telepaths).*  And movement is slow and awkward.  But the boat is mostly just an interface, so it probably doesn't matter a lot.

But in the water, the game is pretty beautiful.  And it needs to be, since that sense of wonder in seeing a new location makes up a good chunk of what's compelling about the gameplay.  Finding the manta ray swimming around brought a genuine smile to my face.  It moves very naturally.  All the fish do, really.  And the way the light shines through the crystal blue water is really great.  Even the way the shore looks from under the water is impressive.

I do wish there was more of a story, and maybe there will be as the game progresses.  I also hope there are things other than plants and fish to find, but I'm pretty confident dubloons and shipwrecks await. 

This game is certainly not for everyone.  It'll be too boring or pretty for a lot of gamers.  Personally, I'm looking forward to putting more time in.

*As a side note to the non-moving mouths, everything is in text.  It's already a slow-moving game, and that doesn't help.  Also, it means my four year old can't really play it by herself.

There actually is a system in place, I have no idea what IGN is talking about.  As you approach an intersection you are probably going to want to turn on, the game makes a beep and flashes the street name on the right or left side of the top HUD to indicate you may want to turn there.  It works and works very well, IMHO.  I've never once looked at a map other than to find a junk yard to swap cars.  Unless you are a retard, you can figure it out pretty quickly based off of the mini map and the indicators.  In short, IGN is dumb.  Shocking.

I don't think IGN is dumb (on this count, anyway).  The system in place is not very effective.  With the engines revving and music blaring, hearing the little beeps can easily be missed.  Add to that the fact that you're in an intense driving game and shouldn't, you know, take your eyes off the road, and maybe small indicators at the top of the HUD isn't the best choice.

So, I caved due to reviews and bought the game.  Played for quite awhile, too.  I spent most of that time just tooling around the city and really began to have a good time trying to find billboards and fences (though I'm not sure how long that'll sustain me).

I tried going seamlessly online, too.  It worked pretty well.  I haphazardly found out that there are challenges being put forth that everyone needs to complete (I missed the indicator due to that whole not-taking-eyes-off-the-road thing).  Things like Hey, everyone smash a billboard!  There are also indicators of whose done the best job driving into oncoming traffic.  There are races with other players that come up, too, but I have absolutely no idea how I was supposed to start such a race.  I still managed to have fun, even when a guy with a car that was clearly a tank compared to mine started taking me down.  At first, I grinned at the Rival aspect and started hunting him down.  I rammed into him a few times, but he kept taking me down.  I only had one car unlocked.  I was a little frustrated that they even let me compete with a guy who was in a superior vehicle, but I decided to try a couple of races for the heck of it.

I pulled up to a traffic signal, not knowing what kind of challenge I'd get, but knowing I didn't want to hunt and peck for a particular one.  It was a long race.  I came in second.  I was first for a while, but then I crashed into an oncoming car that panicked and didn't give me a chance to avoid him.  Man, did I want to try that race again.  But I decided I'd go with the flow and try to get into the whole "Race around every corner" thing.  The problem was that the long race had finished at the farm or cattle ranch or whatever out in the middle of nowhere with no corners or races to be found ANYWHERE. 

I tooled around a little longer, finally found a couple of Burnout Challenges for cars other than mine (so I imagine I'll eventually have to drive to a junk yard, switch cars, then drive all the way back if I ever want to do those challenges).  I'd been trying for a while to wreck the car and enter showtime or whatever, just to see if I could get some enjoyment out of it, even though the loss of Crash Mode is the biggest setback for this series.  I assume you have to find a showtime at a corner somewhere.  I drove around trying to figure out what type of race was at each corner, but I couldn't.  I finally just sucked it up and pulled up to a corner and hit both brakes.

Another long race.  This time to the Country Club.  On the way, I got off track.  There were no turns, so no beeping, just a three way fork in the road with no clear indication of which route I should take.  I tried to look at the mini map, but that thing is worse than useless.  The route line fell in between two of the choices.  I took one, and it sent me on this long roundabout journey over the train tracks.  I finally caught up with the other racers, but slammed into a guardrail or something at the last second.  I thought, "Well, now I know better.  I'd bet I'd pull that off more successfully if I had another chance."  Instead, I came to write this.

The worst part of all this is that before I started the races, I was ready to jot down some impressions of how the game isn't that bad and there's a lot of fun to be had.  The driving controls are pretty tight (though I wish you could pull back a little farther from the car - and I wish they gave you the option to switch the up/down view controls - as it is, I spend too much time holding the viewstick up [or down]...but I guess they know better about how I should be seeing the racing), the look is great, the online, while confusing and a little too loose, is easy to get into and could be fun, I think.

But, man alive, are there some obnoxious choices here.  And they could be easily fixed.  In fact, I'm holding onto the game in the hopes that they will be fixed (let us restart if we want to, tools - and give us Crash Mode or go to hell - it's the thing that made your series stand out, the thing you're famous for).  I have no doubt I'll give it another couple of tries, but I went from being amused and pleased to annoyed as hell.  Not a good sign.  And neither is the length of this post.

I only played through the tutorial myself, but I must say, I don't like the new setting.  The doom and gloom world seems to jar with the greens and blues from past AW games.  I'm sure it'll still be great, I'm just a little disappointed in that aspect.

No More Heroes has already received some stellar reviews, so yes.

Endless Ocean has been decently received, too, and I am in the mood for relaxing exploration (plus my 4 year old might like it).

Advance Wars is something I always buy and rarely play enough, but I'll be hopping in again.

I'm interested in Pirates, too, but not sure if it'll work on my laptop. Is there a fee?

I may also be getting Furu Furu Park, which was supposed to come last week.

The Burnout Paradise demo (and developer) made me angry, but the reviews have been quite good.  I just have a feeling I'll be looking for things to piss me off if I buy it.  And I still don't get how "a new race on every corner" is going to hold out after you've been playing for a long time.  It's going to eventually be in the same situation as the demo, hunting for the couple of corners with new races.

I'm still in love with the game, but part of the reason is that I'm going back to it after a month or so when I have a nice, big block of time.  It stays fresh that way.

Not looking forward to the end fights, but I'm building it up in my head enough that it'll probably not be as bad as what I'm anticipating.  Or, now that I've said that, it'll be worse.

Chaos Theory felt a little off to me.  I prefer Pandora Tomorrow.  But, man, Double Agent just about ruined the series for me.  I still haven't finished it.  And, honestly, the way Conviction seems to be shaping up, I may be done.

Of course, knowing me, I'll crank through the rest of DA, grumpily, and get Conviction anyway, but this series took a huge, long fall as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, Teggy, I love platformers, too.
