I'm spending a lot more time with this than PGR4. 

It is harder than I would like, though.  I remember now how in previous Flatout games the stunts could take forever until you found the sweetspot.  Every other attempt was way off the mark.

I did clear the first carnage race on silver on my first attempt, though.  I never even cleared bronze on the demo.

Well, I'm not actually trying to spin it or justify having bought it.  The truth is, I had just bought the truly awful Anubis II, being a fan of platformers, and was angry at how bad it was.  Look for my scathing review in another post.  http://www.gamingtrend.com/forums/index.php/topic,22433.0.html I was lucky enough to exchange it.  I got Dragon Blade instead. 

My point is less Rah-Rah-Wii and more about budget games in general.  Dragon Blade's biggest problem is how it's priced.  I think if this came out at $20, reviews would have less of an issue with some of the problems.  I haven't played far enough into DB to really comment on the writing, my comments were more general.

I like to write about these smaller releases because there are often diamonds in the rough that get ignored by review sites.  And even when the sites review them, they're sometimes put to higher standards than they should be.  I know I like hearing about them if someone gives them a shot.  I usually assume that people understand the baggage of these games going into a post about them.

There are plenty of really great games on the Wii that I don't need to convince anyone that some of the lame ones are good, too.

Maybe, but I've been known to enjoy a kid game myself.  And if the demo is an indication of the full game (and isn't that what a demo is supposed to be), then this game is geared towards pre-toddler with a brain of cement.  No offense to Javahead's Cementheads.

My four year old has been playing the shit out of Cosmic Family on the Wii, and part of the reason is the variety of gameplay available.  This is the same thing.  Over and over.  And from the demo, there's little indication that there will be more variety.  Sure they mention racing, but that's basically what Jerry Seinbee is doing on the city street.

I'm actually assuming there will be more to do in the full game, but this incredibly short demo doesn't give me high hopes.  If this sequence led to even one other method of play in the demo, I wouldn't be so irked, but I'm standing by my decree.

I have 210 points in 9 achievements and have played for just over an hour, maybe an hour and a half.  The cycle brought a lot of those.

Load times are a tad long, I agree, but again, that may come from playing Stuntman: Ignition too much. 

I actually preferred the basic style of PGR 2's menus to this.  It's not as easy to see what you've pulled off at a glance.  DiRT's menu is near perfection.

Here I was, hoping the Simpsons Movie demo would be up.  Instead, we get Bee Movie.  A five minute demo that consists entirely of action moves and button presses that don't corrsespond to moves on screen.  You fly through traffic and move the joystick according to arrows on the screen then land on a car and have to hit the A button a bunch of times, then go through traffic again, then fly through a park and have to hit the buttons, randomly, then through traffic, then more button presses, traffic, button presses, done.

Wow, bad.

I did exchange Anubis II for it, though.  So it was effectively only twenty dollars, in my mind.

I had been reading some forums online and from what I read, this'll turn into a cult fave at some point.  This is definitely a game that people could have fun with next summer at $20.  There's a lot of potential in it, it's just rough around the edges.  I have had no problem with the controls or linearity, personally.  I actually think they're kind of cool in a Wii-God-of-War-lite kind of way.

The biggest issue seems to be with the graphics and scripting.  Which is why the game shouldn't be $40.  It's very old-school, graphically.  But the viuals are crisp and clean, for the most part.  There's even some moments to appreciate.  There was a waterfall in the second level inside a cavern with some lightshafts spilling in from above.  It gave me a feeling of, "Aw, look, they're trying to make a cool setting for the showdown.  If this was EA, that would look amazing!"  You cheer on the small guy for trying, at least.  The level's called "Waterfall," by the way.  So, yeah, the writing isn't the cleverest.  But as with most decent budget titles, the A for Effort Effect gives them a pass.  It can even be a positive if the writing is cheesy enough.

SO, I took another hit.  I wasn't ready to write any impressions, though, as I'm not too far into it.  There are fairly cool moves to unlock and secret areas to find, a selling point for me.  The second boss battle was kind of fun ("Waterfall").  But really, I've already put more time into Spider-man: Friend or Foe.  Heh.

I'm actually having a harder time with this than I expected.  The kudos are more forgiving (you can skim a wall and still be fine), but the pathways seem to be more narrow and so far my cars are all a little too slow.  One guy manages to pull way ahead and a lot of luck is involved catching him. 

I've been more frustrated than entertained, personally, but I think that may be to playing DiRT, Forza and Stuntman: Ignition too much.  There's always a re-learning curve with PGR, especially with knowing when to brake to avoid slamming into walls, but not braking too much so you're still in the race.

Motorcycles, on the other hand, have been really easy for me.  I unlocked 3 or 4 achievements in my first cycle race.  It was the first time I got the cheering kudos, too.  I'm not sure what it is, but the bike just clicked with me.  Really a lot of fun.  And it's easy to keep the kudos going because you can pull wheelies.  At least until I get a heavier bike.

I've tried the game.  I think the biggest problem is the price.  It shouldn't be $50.  It's very budget.  As long as you go in knowing that, it's not awful.  Of course, I only got to play one level, so who knows how badly it tanks after that.

It did seem like Gamespot was a little harsh, though.

Like I said I simply like taking care of things ahead of time.  It's easier that way.  How is this so difficult to understand?

I'm not sure why we're unbelievable, Shifty.  When the majority is complaining about the ram-it-down-your-throat pre-order policy, you should maybe believe what you hear, even though your experience seems to be different.

In my local GS/EB stores, there are people I like, who know me, and they still ask every time about pre-ordering and put a disappointed look on their faces when I walk in asking for a game I didn't pre-order.  There is one guy who won't do that or go through the whole "Well, let me check to see if there are non-preorders" routine, but he's not always in.

On top of that and the bonuses elsewhere, Best Buy often gets things in before EB/GS in my area.  I like to play games when they come out, too.  At my BB, if something isn't on the shelf when I walk in, they'll go look for it in the back for me.  At EB/GS I get told to check back in a couple of hours while they go through inventory.  Even in the slow ass days of summer.  I worked retail.  Getting new product on the shelves is paramount.  If someone came in looking for something, we would damn well go through the couple of boxes we had, find the item and sell it.

It seems overwhelming when you start playing.  The controls take a bit of getting used to, but once you do it's a blast.  Choplifter with slight strategy elements.

The very same thing happened to me with the Splinter Cell release for the 360, they had boxes of them, BOXES, and said they were all for preorders..........bullshit, especially since this was a few days after the release.

It's because every one of those $5 pre-orders is generating interest for them.

I didn't get the cut off bit at the end, either.  The pieces do add up (thanks for pointing them out here), but it would have been nice to actually see it happening so we wouldn't have to put it together.  Similarly, I think we should have seen an establishing shot of the replacement Halo being built.  It wasn't immediately clear what that big wall was.  I will say it seemed clear to me from the writing that there was a coda coming after the credits.  When you have an uberconfident character like Master Chief say "We'll make it" then they're going to make it. 

I've never liked the Flood.  They always seem like an ammo suck to me.  I was actually not minding them in this game until Level 8.  I can't tell you how much ammo I wasted before I decided to just run for it.  The Flood seemed to continuously regenerate.  There was no end.  Also, those spikey bastards on the walls were a royal pain in the ass.  If you didn't have the right kind of weapon, forget it.  Blowing up the ship was a lot of hopping around.  Then when I got to the new Halo and had to climb the tower, I was still in run-it mode, not realizing that I had to switch gears back to slow and methodical.  The Flood went back to being as annoying as ever.

However, taking that out of it, there were some incredible sequences in the campaign.  Overall, I found it excellent.  I think Bioshock is a better single player experience, but this was pretty damn good.

I'm not agaisnt pre-orders, I'm just against the in-your-face pre-order policy.

If I pre-ordered, I'd feel obligated to get the game there, and I'd miss out on things like the free strategy guide I got yesterday for buying Zelda DS at Toys R Us.

I prefer Best Buy because I get $5 or $10 coupons depending on how much I spend with them, plus there are often 10% coupons for being in the Reward Zone.  Circuit City just started a program where you get 10% off every time, but my Circuit City sucks with shelves chock full of Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 next to Project Sylpheed.  New releases get crammed in "sometime in the next couple of weeks" after release.

BB is the way to go for me for now.

Agreed, it was cool.  I'm worried about the information being overwhelming.  I never felt like I had the overview I needed.  I also ran out of power, and I couldn't find any information on how to get more power.  As much as I think doing things in park as the manager was great, it was also confining.  I'd like to be better able to scroll around the park.  The map is a jumble.

Still, being able to talk to anyone in the park was a neat feature.  I wonder how well that works in the full game.  When does repetition set in?

I heard the previous versions were good.  I was hoping for BC on the Xbox one, but so far no luck.  

I'm cautiously optimistic.

I've noticed a few complaints online about the water not moving as expected.  I think a lot of people are expecting a Mercury Meltdown kind of thing, or one of the rolling ball type games and it's more of a platformer than that.  It's not as fluid as those other games.  However, they made one big mistake in the controls.  I was having a hard time with jumping, and I've figured out why.  When you jump, your trajectory is fixed.  In other words, you can't change direction mid-jump.  Maybe they were going for realism, but I'm not sure why you'd bother in a game about an anthropomorphic drop of water.  Jumping is pretty important to platform games, and while their choice doesn't ruin the game, it does make it quite frustrating at times.  I'd knock a whole point off for that alone.  It's still fairly good, though.  Maybe a 7.0 or even 7.5.

Anubis II, which I believe is the first in a series about the dogheaded pharoah Anubis the Second, is purportedly a platformer for the Wii.  It's cleverly priced at $20 with bright, colorful pictures on the box.  It is very alluring in a Hey-it's-only-twenty-dollars-how-bad-can-it-be kind of way.  Of course, if you had the information before thinking that thought, you would know how bad it is: bad.

I love platformers.  Even mundane ones that get reviews like "typical" and "not innovative" and "jump around, shoot baddies, collect things - been there, done that."  I have been there, and it's a place I enjoy hanging out.  I'll do that again and again. 

Anubis II has made the monumentally poor decision to map the jumping controls to the nunchuck.  But wait, you say, though probably not out loud unless you're on a chatty basis with your computer, other games have mapped jumping to the chuck - even with a flick of the wrist.  Yes, but those other games weren't platform games about precision jumping.  They also didn't make you flick your wrists twice to double jump.  They also also didn't make you move with the chuck's control stick and jump at the same time in acrobatic maneuvering onto platforms that are very difficult to gage, distance-wise.

But that's not even the biggest problem, the Wii remote is used for all attacks in the same way as Zelda.  You know how satisfying it is to flick the remote and swing the sword as Link, knocking into the bad guys repeatedly?  Imagine if the remote didn't register your swing.  Frequently.  Add to that the whole "difficult to gage, distance-wise" bit from the last paragraph and apply it to approaching bad guys, and you have what my four year old calls a recime for disastoh. 

I'm going to go back to EB and beg the manager to let me do a rare exchange.  I'm hoping to get the untested Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire.  Hell, I'm already $20 in the hole.  For $20 more, how bad can it be?

As for multiplayer, I find, more and more, that I'm getting too lazy to reach for that headset and plug it in.  Half the time it's some yammering kid telling me how gay I am anyway...

Picked up the game over the weekend and loving it so for.. only 5 or 6 hours played so far I think, but I know more about skateboarding than I ever knew before. The game is pretty hard to me, but also forgiving of failure. I had a photo challenge where I needed hop onto a concrete slap, do a manual then gap to the street and I swear I tried that 50 or 60 times but at least I was able to keep making laps around trying rather than clicking through failure and retry prompts (though you do have to click a couple times for a video failure as it resets the start point each time).

Tough game, pretty game, lovin it.

I replayed that section a bunch, too.  Strangers kept walking into my path, which was very annoying.  I had a hard time circling around, so I did restart each time.

I have to say, the challenge level of this game will undoubtably be what eventually stops me from playing.  I've redone some challenges for more than an hour, and I know that's going to turn into diminishing returns.  At this point, though, I keep coming back to it.

For Mercs 2, I had been hearing rumblings that it didn't capture what the first game was.  The sandbox feel was missing, I think.  Hopefully, the delay is a realization that they have to provide what the fans are expecting if they want to milk this series to death...
