13881  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need for Speed ProStreet demo on: October 23, 2007, 05:33:04 PM
I played the demo.

I, too, was worried about the shift to "sanctioned" racing.  I'm still worried about that.  However, the races still seem to be on real world streets, so that's something.

There's no free roaming world in the demo, but that was something I felt was unnecessary in the previous games.  I was never a fan of driving around to find races.  Just give me the races.  Of course, just 'cause it's not in the demo, doesn't mean it's not in the game, but that doesn't seem to be the direction it's heading.

Like others here, I really loved Most Wanted and was very disappointed by Carbon.  One of the big problems there was framerate.  In the demo, at least, the framerate seems solid (30 FPS, I'm guessing).  There was one spot in a tunnel where things got crystal clear for a second, as though the framerate suddenly went up, but then there was the smallest hint of a stutter.  Weird, but minor.  I'm sure they'll fix it for the final game.  Overall, the graphics were appealing, and I was never blinded by the sun, which was a constant problem in Most Wanted.

There are two races in the demo.  Speed King and Grip King.  Speed King was kind of cool.  Like a checkpoint race with the radar challenges from the past games mixed together.  You  race through a series of cool-looking checkpoints that register your speed.  They add the speeds at all checkpoints together to determine the race winner.  Grip King had a lot of corners.  Nothing too tough, but I was only able to place second.

Control seems to be pretty good.  The road is surprisingly narrow in Speed King, but I was able to maintain a pretty good speed throughout, almost losing control one time when a guy had an accident ahead of me that I had to avoid.  The sense of speed is once again damned cool.

There were no cops that I could see, and no indication that any would appear.  The enjoyably cheesy storyline isn't in the demo, either.

I'm still on the fence, but I certainly enjoyed this demo more than Carbon.

Wow, considering the reviews this game is getting, I can't believe how much it was off my radar. Either I wasn't paying attention or there's been very little marketing for this. I wasn't planning on picking it up, but that might change now; just not sure if it will be before the end of the holiday season.

Apart from the IGN stroking, there hasn't been a lot of hype for this.  At least not that I've seen.

As was said above, this will probably turn out to be a Wii port of the original game, and in that case I reserve the right to revoke my extreme excitement and replace it with "screw that".

Either that, or it's just a new avatar pic for #9.

360:
Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation -YES, no sticks, though.
Clive Barker's Jericho -Waiting for reviews
Conan -Looking probable after the demo and some strong first impressions I've seen
Tomb Raider: Anniversary -YES

Wii:
EA Playground -Probably...I think this is looking good - the paper airplane levels look fun, at least)
Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure -YES, I've heard so many good things about this, it'd take some bad reviews to turn me away.
Namco Museum Remix is supposed to come out, too.  This could be interesting, as it's not just more old games ported to yet another console.
Mercury Meltdown Revolution -This thing has been coming out for months now.  The last two weeks it was a lock for release and then didn't appear in stores.  If I can find it, I'll get it.

DS:
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trails and Tribulations -After I finish the 2nd, which may be a while.
Front Mission is possible, too.
Dementium: the Ward is supposedly coming out this week as well, and I am very excited for it.

On second thought, I think I'm OUT on Namco Museum Remix: http://www.gamesradar.com/us/wii/game/reviews/article.jsp?articleId=20071022142118709081&sectionId=1000&pageId=20071022143423721076

In the video trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26653.html - uses PS2 gameplay footage), the developer talking mentions enhanced graphics.

While extra features or more gameplay would have been nice, I'll be happy if they just nail the controls.  Upping the resolution a little will be just fine for me.

The cancel button is B

I never played the PSP version, so the chaining time doesn't bother me much.  It does seem to go on a bit sometimes, but that's usually exciting.  There have been a couple of times when the clock was ticking down and I was chaining.  I tried to cancel to get the time bonuses, but I couldn't get it to work.  I still enjoyed the game, though.  Having no prior experience with it, it just feels like part of the game when you start a long chain before the clock stops.  Like there may be some strategy involved.  If I could figure out what exactly causes a chain to go on forever other than luck, I may even be able to use that strategy.

And I am extremely happy that they didn't do that, having never played the PS2 version.

How about a compromise? A new game that comes bundled with the original remade for the Wii! smile

Yep, the katamari has always felt like a Mac truck when you're trying to do turns.  It's not agile by any stretch, and I think you're supposed to feel like you're straining to keep it under control.  Don't know if the controls are the same, but on the PS2 there was a move where you pressed both sticks at the same time to do a quick 180 flip.  I got a lot of mileage out of that one.  Other than that, I think it's pretty much a matter of practice.

Yeah, that's clearly a key move.  So key that it seems like it should have been mapped to a different button.
13894  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Beautiful Katamari on: October 18, 2007, 03:41:48 PM
Well, it's out, and I got it.  I never had a PS2, but this game always looked appealing to me.  I tried the PSP version, but it was too hard to control.  I thought the 360 version would be the answer, but I'm finding it hard to control, too.  Just in the sense of how slowly and awkwardly the katamari moves if you're not going forward.  I have a feeling that's just the way the game is designed, but it's frustrating.

I also feel like I must be missing something obvious in the basic gameplay, because, appart from the opening level, the King seems disappointed no matter what I do.  I surpassed his size requirement.  The majority has been what he's requested.  Yet my score at the end gets an "Awww" sound effect and a comment to learn to roll better.  I read somewhere that it's in the King's character to constantly be underwhelmed by your performance, but it doesn't come off as a character trait.  It comes off like the game is telling you that you haven't done a good enough job.  Honestly, though, I can't see how I can get the katamari much bigger than it already is in the time allotted, and I don't see how I can collect more of the items requested (it's already in the top spot...how much higher can I go?).  And I certainly don't see how I can do both.

The game is still compelling, though.  The music is fun, the style is neat.  The graphics are a little blockier than I would like, especially when you get to the larger objects/people, but they're bright and cheerful.  I wish there was a smidge more Americanization going on, because a lot of times I can't tell what an item is or, more importantly, what category it falls under.

Can someone who has played the previous versions toss up a primer for the game to let me know what I should be doing?  Thanks!
13895  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA] Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe on: October 18, 2007, 03:31:33 PM
I thought it was odd that the demo doesn't give access to the updated graphics mode.  In old-style 2D mode, I can barely tell what's going on.  That may be due to my never having played the game before, though.  I did read the instructions, but I felt a little lost.

That's not lame at all.  Happens to me all the time.  It can often be difficult for me to figure whether I flat out don't like a game or if I'm just not in the mood for it at that time.  RE4 is the most notable example for me.  Didn't click at all the first time I tried and I quit halfway through.  Came back to it many months later and it's now one of my favorite games.

Same thing happened to me with RE4.

I have reservations about the Fatal Frame series though. I'm a huge fan of RE and SH, but when I tried to get into the first FF game I had trouble and quit early. Is FF2 supposed to be an improvement?

It is improved in most if not all ways.

Black
Fatal Frame
Fatal Frame II
Battlestar Galactica
Conker
Mechassault 2
Pariah
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill the Room

I'm particularly curious about the FF and SH games as Halloween is around the corner!
Muchas Thank You.

Don't get Battlestar Galactica or Pariah.  Mechassault 2 was meh.  The first one was better.  Silent Hill 2 was better than the Room, IMO, Fatal Frame 2 beats that.  I loved Black, personally.  And Conker is good if you like platformers, but hard.

Both.  Checkpoints are frequent and appropriately placed but you can also save anywhere.

But you only get, like, six, which kind of sucks.

Six saves?  Still doesn't seem like a big deal since in addition to your last two checkpoints (which prevents you from getting stuck) you can also select the beginning of a level at any time.

Yeah, but with the huge levels, if I missed something an hour and a half into it, I'm not going to want to go all the way back to that point just to get it.  Also, there are no screen shots of where you saved the game.  Not a huge deal, but something helpful I miss from the PC version.

I'm not sure how I feel about these non-N characters.  Are they sullying the franchise?  Is it too gimmicky with them in there?  Or is it gonna be cool to stomp Sonic's ass.

hey Bigger....i'm with you on the motion sickness.   i've played about all FPS games out for the pc and 360 and HL2 is the only one that made me downright sick.

i was looking to grab the orange box as well but hopefully it doesn't give me the motion sickness again.

Give Marathon a try.  Better get a bucket.

Woo I love me some demos.

I've been going crazy lately with demo addiction.  Seeing a new one shouldn't make me as happy as it does.

As for this demo, it's pretty good in a more of the same kind of way.

I was annoyed to find that I couldn't walk under a highly placed fire jet and when it killed me in seconds, I had to start all the way back at the beginning.
