Not planning to buy something unless I hear that the Wiimake of Rockstar Table Tennis has really good waggle controls.

Me too.  Anyone going to be a guinea pig on that one?

I'm sure Bullwinkle is more than willing to take one for the team.  Again.  slywink

No no, this one had some production values and is from a known publisher.

I thought Silent Hill 2 was awesome when I played it, Resident Evil always felt more action-oriented while Silent Hill felt more about suspense. I haven't played Fatal Frame 2, but SH2 scared me pretty good back in the day and had a cool story to boot.

I have reservations about the Fatal Frame series though. I'm a huge fan of RE and SH, but when I tried to get into the first FF game I had trouble and quit early. Is FF2 supposed to be an improvement?

It is improved in most if not all ways.

I should point out that Black looks really good on the 360, too.  Not next gen, but better than most Xbox BC games.

I'm looking for a few xbox games for the 360.  Any opinions on the following? (Also, how well do they play on the 360?)

Black
Fatal Frame
Fatal Frame II
Battlestar Galactica
Conker
Mechassault 2
Pariah
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill the Room

I'm particularly curious about the FF and SH games as Halloween is around the corner!
Muchas Thank You.

Don't get Battlestar Galactica or Pariah.  Mechassault 2 was meh.  The first one was better.  Silent Hill 2 was better than the Room, IMO, Fatal Frame 2 beats that.  I loved Black, personally.  And Conker is good if you like platformers, but hard.

i am also hoping i get out of the Offices sometime CK,the surroundings are starting to really bore me

DOA4 was hard? It was my first fighting game since (of that genre) Mortal combat deception on the ps2 and I actually enjoyed and played through it reasonably well. That type of game is not my style at all I only got it because there was not many choices back then for the 360.
I will give VF5 a try.

Yes, for the reasons Destructor mentioned.  Especially the last boss.  It was notorious for cheating.

You know, in that last post, I held back from using the word "perfect."  But then I saw this:  http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/pc/game/news/article.jsp?sectionId=1006&articleId=20071012145550468084&releaseId=2006071916229527001

I agree with so many of the points here.  Not the least of which is that when I fired up TF2 after finishing Portal, I was frustrated that I didn't have the Portal gun.

I fully expect to play through Portal again (and not years from now, either).  I may even make the wife give it a shot.

It's like the perfect meal, it gave me just enough to leave me wanting more.

I finished Portal last night myself and also didn't have any control issues.  Smooth and easy.  And what a great damn game.  I'm in love with GLADoS.  I'm looking forward to some Marketplace Portal levels (though I doubt we'll see those for many months if at all).  No chunks blown, either, though there are plenty of moments where I couldn't tell my ass from my elbow.

I'm kind of curious about the save system myself- did they go with save anywhere or did they go with a checkpoint system?

Both.  Checkpoints are frequent and appropriately placed but you can also save anywhere.

But you only get, like, six, which kind of sucks.

Six saves?  Still doesn't seem like a big deal since in addition to your last two checkpoints (which prevents you from getting stuck) you can also select the beginning of a level at any time.

Yeah, but with the huge levels, if I missed something an hour and a half into it, I'm not going to want to go all the way back to that point just to get it.  Also, there are no screen shots of where you saved the game.  Not a huge deal, but something helpful I miss from the PC version.

Counterstrike Source was HL2 mp.

They also had a regular deathmatch mode that came later for Half Life 2 specifically.  It wasn't anything special, but it would be a nice option.

I had a couple of similar problems as well in the first chapter.  One minor where the guy who was trying to keep his luggage at the beginning moved his arms through the luggage.  One major, where after escaping the apartment I got trapped behind a guard in the collapsed stairs.  He wouldn't move or attack me.  Had to reload.

I've been going crazy lately with demo addiction.  Seeing a new one shouldn't make me as happy as it does.

As for this demo, it's pretty good in a more of the same kind of way.

I was annoyed to find that I couldn't walk under a highly placed fire jet and when it killed me in seconds, I had to start all the way back at the beginning.

For those who hated the previous PGR cone challenges, they've split "Cone Challenge" into two events.

The one that most resembles the old cone challenge scoring method places groupings of cones in parts of the track and actually asks you to hit them on purpose. Once you hit the required number of cones the event ends. There have been very few of these events. I don't actually believe I've encountered one in probably the last 10 championships I've finished. The ones you do encounter should be mostly easy. There's one or two that required one or two retries, but in general they're not hard.

The other that most resembles the old cone challenges as far as the way a track is setup and the way you have to drive is the Cone Gate Challenge. In these there is no Kudos requirement to finish. Think of it more as a Hot Lap or Time Attack event with a set path through the track for you to follow. Missing a cone gate will incur a time penalty that will be added to your total lap/race time. These haven't generally been very hard either, though it will depend on what difficulty you choose. If you're playing on Normal though they shouldn't generally be much of a problem as long as you pick a decent car.

My only gripes with the game:

One is the difficulty settings. I miss the old Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum setup. It's still there in the arcade events but it's gone for the Career mode. In Career your options are the usual Easy, Normal, and Hard. The general consensus is that Easy is far too easy and Normal jumps back and forth from being a tiny bit on the easy side to being way too hard. I can't say I've encountered anything way too hard, but take what I say with a grain of salt. I finished PGR3 all the way through on Gold difficulty, so may viewpoint is likely skewed.

My other complaint is that the career mode can be a bit punishing if you fail certain events. The event calendar seems like a cool and fun idea until you fail a qualifier for a Major Championship and then just.. don't get to race in it until you've gone through the whole schedule again and started back in September. It's especially frustrating if you make a couple of mistakes but still think you can finish, only to discover that you miss by less than half a second on your qualifying time. Once you've finished.. you're finished. There is no retry option once you've crossed the finish line. You can restart a race from the pause menu if you know beforehand that you're not going to make it, but taking away the retry option once you've crossed the finish line feels like a really artificial way of extending game length. It makes sense given the career mode's overall setup, but can still be a bit frustrating the first time you get bit by it.

I stopped playing career mode entirely because of that "feature."

I'm sure I'll come back to it eventually, but, man, was that a stupid decision.

Well, I liked it, but it's got the same lack of gameplay polish that Hit N Run did.  I still found that game very enjoyable, but unnecessarily frustrating at times.  Much like this demo.

I'm so jaded by movie and TV games being bad that even an attempt at something better for a franchise I love gets a buy from me.

Unless I start seeing 4s and 5s in reviews, I'm still in.
13907  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Conan demo on Live on: October 09, 2007, 03:43:26 AM
I think this will be a fun game, if it can sustain the momentum through the whole campaign.  These things do tend to fall into a repetitious loop quickly.

One thing I especially liked is the scripting.  It seems to capture the Conan feel more than I would have expected.  Anyone know who's doing the writing?  Is it Kurt Busiek, by chance?

I thought this was a no-brainer, but I was using that term to describe the purchasing decision, not the gameplay itself.  Games Radar warns to stay far away with a score of 4

They say:
Quote
Itís one thing that itís so broken by cack-handed controls and another that it mires everyoneís favourite Princess-grabbing monkey in its muck, but the real crime is that itís so disappointing. Jungle Beat reduced the essence of platforming into a very neat package; everything you could ever want from a good 2D platform game was in there, all played with just four actions - left drum, right drum, a combination of the two and a clap. Even with such a simple setup, the game was layered and complex, fun and frantic. Thereís nothing wrong with a simple, solid game, but Barrel Blast is idiotic, shallow and frustrating. Tie it to a bongo rocket and light the fuse.

Both, though the demo is on XBLM, not sure about PS3.  It's from Koei, and it dips again into the battlefield, but instead of Japan or China, it's during the Hundred Years' War.  You control a main character and all of the pre-battle preparations are done in a bar, talking to various NPCs.  On the field, you move your character, but you don't actually fight with them.  And that's where my confusion comes in.  I'm not sure what the point is.

I wish the full zoom out had the numbers available or that there was one more level between full out and mid zoom.

I'm not sure I get it.  It comes off like an action game, but they take all the action out of your hands.  It's hard to tell how effective your attacks are because your guys are always following behind you, but the camera is behind you, too.  Strategy games don't usually click with me right away, so it's possible that this is brilliant, and I just don't see it.

-load times

that's a bummer to hear...was hoping they would improve on that after the painfully long loads in PGR3.  do they still make you watch the long loading screen every time you restart a race?

Yes and it is very disappointing after playing Stuntman:Ignition and Dirt both of which allowed you to restart a race instantly.  The load time isn't quite as long as when you first start the race but it still seems much too long a time to wait.  This is very evident for me in the early races where one mistake will allow the other cars to get ahead of me and from then on I can't catch up using the slow cars I have.  Having to sit through yet another load screen because I forgot there was a bump in the road just before that corner is aggravating,  it would be less so if I had a car that might be able to catch up.

I'm frustrated by the reload times as well.  I wouldn't care so much if it took longer to load the track if the reload was quick.  Flatout is instantaneous, too.
