13881  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying in September? on: September 03, 2007, 12:15:58 AM
Gulp.

360:
- Medal of Honor: Airborne, Stranglehold
- SKATE??
- Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions, Eternal Sonata
- Halo 3

Wii:
- Pool Party?
- Cosmic Family (for my 4 yr old), Fishing Master, Mercury Meltdown: Revolution, My Sims
- Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party Bundle?, Dewy's Adventure

DS:
- Worms: Open Warfare 2
- DK Jungle Climber, Drawn to Life?
- Sonic Rush Adventure

Some of these will probably drop off the list, but, wow, that's a lot.  Still, Halo 3 is the only top of the line must have game for me.  Worms: Open Warfare 2 has recently moved to the next highest slot.  DK Jungle Climber, Mercury Meltdown, Stranglehold and Eternal Sonata are right behind that.  I could be uber excited for Fishing Master, My Sims and Dewy's Adventure if they don't suck.

Thank goodness all the good games are coming this month and nothing is being released in the two months before Christmas. [/sarcasm]

That would be pretty cool.  They need the chase scene from the original Gone in 60 Seconds.  38 minutes of pure car chase and carnage.  Then you could get Bullit, The French Connection, Ronin...

I hadn't thought of Gone in 60 Seconds, but Bullet and French Connection I did.  I forgot about Ronin.  That was one of the best car chases I've ever seen.  The Mini chase in The Bourne Identity would be good, too, but my first thought, for some reason, was Blues Brothers.

what did they say about the Multiplayer?

Quote
Stranglehold features online multiplayer for up to six players. It's only deathmatch and team deathmatch, which take place in a variety of locales from the game. Each match is complete and utter chaos. Every player has access to the various Tequila Bombs and can (sometimes) enter slow motion. None of this really comes together though, as players need to be in slow motion at the same time, so that there's no real advantage to using Stranglehold's primary gameplay element. And the Precision Aiming power still has the same slow-mo reticule movements, but the other players are moving in real time, so it's pretty much impossible to use.

While the multiplayer doesn't come together as well as it should, it's still an interesting experiment. Anyone who picks up Stranglehold should give the multiplayer a shot at least once, just to experience the insanity. But this isn't something that will have people playing Stranglehold for the next year.

They also point out that the single player is only 6 - 8 hours, which I know will be a big problem for some of you.  Hell, that's even a bit of a problem for me, and I'm definitely a quality over quantity guy.

I was just watching The Parallax View tonight (great 70's political thriller with Warren Beatty), and there was an okay chase scene in it.  It struck me that what they really need to do with this series is recreate classic scenes from movies and have you drive them.  No need for a story or anything.  Make them bonus missions if you have to, but put that together.  Maybe a downloadable bonus pack.
13886  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [DS] Worms: Open Warfare 2 !! on: September 01, 2007, 12:46:11 AM
This wasn't on my radar at all, but now IGN has put it there.  Gadzooks, I haven't seen so many positive comments in one place.  Gander:

The Nintendo DS and its tiny screens may not be the best outlet for the classic Worms experience, but THQ and Two Tribes managed to bring it all together for the handheld gamers. Worms: Open Warfare 2 is a massive upgrade to the original game, so much so that it really should have been its own brand instead of "Number Two" of the 2005 release. Awesome single player campaigns, fantastic multiplayer support, and some unexpected treats specific to the unique features of the handheld. It absolutely trounces the first game in every category and finally gives the Nintendo DS the true Worms experience.

Another Take
from Mark Bozon
I’ve been a huge Worms fan since the very beginning, which is why I feel I owe it to both myself and you – our readers – to throw in my opinion as well. There hasn’t been a truly impressive Worms game in quite some time, and then here in the last few months we’ve gotten a very true-to-form effort on Xbox 360, and now Worms: Open Warfare 2; both classic franchise offerings in their own regard. As far as Open Warfare goes though, this game really pulled me in over the last few months by delivering not only spot-on Worms gameplay, but also a ton of additional DS-specific modes and options that added depth to a series that - quite frankly - hasn’t changed too much over the years. As far as this reviewer is concerned, Worms: Open Warfare 2 feels less like “Another good Worms game,” and more like a definitive compilation for fans that also happens to be portable. Tie that in with online, tons of customization, and impressive presentation and you’ve got what I feel is one of the best DS games of this year, period. If you’re a Worms fan, this one’s a no-brainer.

They give it an 8.7!
13887  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Stranglehold on: September 01, 2007, 12:40:12 AM
There are a couple of threads, but none of them seem to be about the game, really.  Impressions/Reviews, etc.

IGN gave it an 8.1, and were pretty positive, saying:

Quote
There are a lot of mindless shooters on the market, but none of them immerse you in John Woo's world. And that's where Stranglehold stands out. This is the true sequel to Hard Boiled, which means Stranglehold is more about style than substance. So, not surprisingly, the story is melodramatic and forgettable and the adrenaline-pumping action is the star of the show. Stranglehold could use two more chapters and a little more visual polish, but it is an otherwise exhilarating experience. There are plenty of "Oh my God" moments and just enough challenge to sustain anyone's interest from start to finish.

i dunno i thought it was pretty bad.  i was excited after watching the intro, particularly when he shoved the round back into the tank.  i lasted about 5 minutes in the demo though and thought it was annoying as hell.  that giant mech showed up, i was all excited to use reverse and as i see a round come at me, i reverse and... nothing.  several tries, still... nothing.  try to move forward and... nothing - blocked.  i guess i COULD have waited and seen if it opened up but i mean come on i had already waited. it seemed a bit pointless to be stuck there.  it just felt like nothing was happening, the coolness of the movie was just that - a movie and that it (the game) was scripted and scripted poorly at that.  i then tried the call of juarez demo and found that equally uninspired (though pretty) and clunky as hell.  so two really bad / mediocre demos made me cry a bit after the fun that was the medal of honor.  oh well.

Yeah, five minutes.  You shouldn't be asked to wait longer than that to do something.  That's interminable.
13889  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Stuntman: Ignition! on: August 31, 2007, 03:57:51 PM
The near instantaneous restarts cannot be underestimated in the appeal of this game.  It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it really, truly is.  I'm not sure if that took them a long time to set up or not, but it was worth it if it did.

Overtakes are the only stunt so far where I've been frustrated and didn't feel like it was completely my fault.  I guess you have to come at the car from behind and then pass it on the left.  Whatever method they use to judge whether you achieved it or not is a little too picky, IMO.

This game really surpised me.  I remember when the first one came out.  I played a level or two of it somewhere, thinking how much I wanted to like the game.  This time around it seems like they got it right.

Someone said that here, too.  Hello...is this thing on? icon_wink

This demo is definitely improved over the last one.  It looks nice and plays smoothly, but it also doesn't feel very special.  Also, I couldn't tell the difference, practically, between any of the time modes.  Sure you can rewind, but it only brought someone back to life one time (who died a second later) and helped clear one puzzle.  Is there a difference between stop and slow other than the rain not moving?

I'm not against it, really, but it does seem like someone said:

"Hey, they hated that last demo.  How can we change the game?"
"People liked Half Life 2, um..."
"Okay, didn't they have an oppressive leader talking on a big screen?  Let's put that in."
"FEAR is kind of popular..."
"Good, good, we've already got 'time' in our title, so let's put in those slow down dealie controls for our recon-like guy."
"Won't that make it the same, then?"
"Not if we tell 'em it's not.  Players are stupid!"
And they all laugh maniacally.

Hopefully, they'll give you more to do with those time controls in the game, but shouldn't they tease that in the demo more?

13905  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Carnival Games on: August 30, 2007, 04:02:19 AM
I sacrificed myself for you guys and bought it.

When I saw the Global Star logo, I thought I was in for it.  Ugh.  Bad company.  But they did make Scaler, which I liked.  This game is better than you'd think.  The graphics are a little goofy.  Everyone has hands but no arms.  No one's mouths move.  They've got limited but mildly interesting options for designing your own character.  Everything is bright and colorful and relatively jaggy-free, though.  The game actually does seem to have a style to it.

There's something about the setting that's a little empty feeling, even though there are armless people wandering around in the background.  The background noises may be part of the blandness there.  Sound effects for the games are okay.  Nothing amazing, but they get the job done.

There are something like two dozen games in this thing.  Some of them need to be unlocked, and it looks like they may need to be unlocked in single player.  You probably won't play much single player, though.  My four year old was able to get most of the controls pretty well.  We played a handful of games before bed.  Milk Bottles, Coin Toss, Hoops, Test Your Strength, Frog Leap and, a personal favorite, Skee Ball.  She actually beat me at two of them (including skee ball) and tied me on most of the others.  I won Hoops with a lucky shot and Test Your Strength is suprisingly exhausting, so she didn't really have a chance there.  All of the games controlled differently, and all of them felt more or less like they should.  I had some trouble with some controls after she went to bed (Hole in One and Squirrel Plinko in particular), but it may just be that I missed something.

In single player, you unlock prizes, but they don't seem to be worth anything except bragging rights.  You also win tickets which can be spent on some of the games.

We definitely had fun and I can see us playing quite a few more times, too.

Keep in mind this is a very early, rough set of impressions.  I don't want to lead anyone down a bad path as happened with Boogie, which seemed great at first blush but became steadily less so with more play (especially once I tried the broken karaoke and lame single player).  At this point, my guess would be tha most folks won't want to spend the full $40 for it.  But at $20, I'll bet anyone could have fun.  Maybe even at $30, if you know there are people coming over.
13906  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Stuntman: Ignition! on: August 29, 2007, 09:16:35 PM
I've now played through the first movie, a stunt show and a commercial (even threaded a few of those).  What a fantastic game.  It has that great game quality that makes you want to play just one more time, and suddenly you've played for an hour.  Like the first Burnout, for a similarity in racing games.

I completed the first movie, Aftershock, and as a result, I was rewarded with a trailer for the film!  Brilliant.  The only drawback is that the trailer seems to be pre-rendered, so it's not filled with the driving you actually did, but it runs through a lot of the cool moves you did, so it's still pretty great.

I haven't even touched MP yet or the construction arena, but supposedly those are good too.

If you're on the fence, go get it.
