Wow, lots of great feedback, thanks guys!
That Antec case/psu combo deal is pretty tempting, I'm thinking I'll go that route. And its looking like I'll have to do a Frys run to nab a 5850 since newegg is out.
Thanks again for all the help, I appreciate it! And once its all ordered and assembled, I'll post my impressions (which hopefully won't involve me catching fire or getting electrocuted!).

Thanks for the feedback, TheAtomicKid! I was looking at the Antec 183 because I've heard its quiet and spacious (so godzilla sized future video cards wouldn't be super cramped), what's the noise/space situation like on the Antec 300? And for the PSU, I'd like to stick with modular. And I was looking at the Corsair modular units, such as the 620w unit, and it has excellent reviews but isn't all that cheap. I was wondering if the 520w unit would work for this system? I'm also on the fence on the i5-750 vs. i7-860 CPU, as I've heard conflicting info on how much I'd notice a difference on a gaming rig (ie versus one that does video editing). Anyone have any input on this?

Absolutely loving the game so far. Having metal songs be collectibles is just about the greatest thing ever.
Also started up a quick skirmish with the AI to try out the strategy portion, and I really dig it. Played as the doom metal faction and they have some really nifty tricksy stuff to them, especially having multiple units capable of hijacking enemy units!

DETHKLOK!!! Just picked up the new album earlier today, and I'm really digging it. And though I'll need some more listens to say for sure, but I think I may like it more than the first album. It has more of a cohesive album feel, and none of the songs feel like duds. I give it a very brutal thumbs up!

Thanks for the recommendation Brinstil, Disarmonia Mundi is kind of interesting. Although I bought Fragments of D-Generation instead after listening to samples on Amazon.
Yeah, Fragments of D-Generation and Mind Tricks are definitely better albums.

I just used up a bunch of emusic downloads to snag some stuff I've been meaning to get for awhile now. The Sword - Gods of the Earth This has been on my to-get list for a very long time, so I finally snagged it. Good ole' rockin' stoner metal. Unida & Dozer - The Best Of Wayne-Gro & Coming Down The Mountain (double EP) More stoner metal! I love Dozer, they are easily one of my favorite metal bands. Though I'm not too familiar with Unida, I figured it can't hurt to try them out if I get more Dozer too. Disarmonia Mundi - Nebularium & The Restless Memoirs EP My other favorite type of metal, melodic death metal! This is their first cd and newest EP combined together, both of which lack one of their main vocalists (Bjorn of Soilwork), but its not bad so far.

what do you guys think of Borzaya?
It's the russian descriptor for sight hounds like the borzoi... 'quick dog'.
Is it too weird?
Maybe I'm getting desperate. Not maybe.
I like this, it sticks out. EDIT: To further expand, the name fits the mood of the music IMO. Its short, distinctive, and FEELS like a stoner metal band name.

The new Mastodon album has been rocking my face off since I picked it up, what a great fucking album. Also been listening to a bunch of Dozer, thanks to a recommendation by Kratz, as well as my mainstay of melodic death metal (Soilwork, Children of Bodom, etc.).
And I will never understand the appeal of viking and dnd metal. Listening to songs about hobbits and dragons is just about the saddest thing I can think of. And I've never even heard of pirate metal, but it sounds about as awful.
Any additional recommendations on Melodeath bands? Outside of the big ones (In Flames, Bodom, Dark Tranquillity) I'd recommend: Darkane Dispatched Gardenia Kalmah Skyfire Here is a quick list of some in my collection: At the Gates Blood Stain Child Disarmonia Mundi Edge of Sanity Engel Fear My Thoughts The Haunted Mercenary myGRAIN Scar Symmetry Soilwork

I am very interested in getting this game but I'm not sure my computer could run it. My rig:
P4 3 ghz, 1 gig of RAM, ATI X1600 AGP card.
This looks to meet the minumum requirements but I'm hesitant to purchase. Company of Heroes gets a little choppy on bigger maps. Is anyone running the game on a similar system?
I think Brinstil from IRC tried (and failed) to run the demo on a similar system. I'll try to get him to stop in on this thread. gellar 1. Thanks. 2. There's a demo? Sorry - Beta. gellar I hath been summoned?! My specs are: p4 3ghz 3gb ram (was 1gb when I first tried) geforce 7800 gs To preface, CoH runs fine for me (at 1GB ram even). The dow2 beta, however, was somewhat laggy even at low settings (at both 1gb and after I upgraded to 3gb of ram). It certainly was not unplayable, though, as I ordered it from the gogamer sale. It could even be something that's fixed with new drivers (my current are kinda old), or the retail release. Once it actually arrives next week I can post some better performance impressions (as opposed to my recollection of the beta performance).

you could've downloaded the client 2 weeks ago. also im thinking the game comes on dvds. you'r reasoning is aboslutely stupid. this is a BETA. look it up.
What does Fileplanet having absolute shit hosting (which Mythic oh so wisely chose to host the beta through) have to do with it being a beta? Oh right, nothing. You are reasoning is absolutely stupid indeed. Fileplanet has been the major host for things like this for a while. I had no issues getting the beta from fileplanet, getting about 360k/sec which is the max I have ever gotten from anywhere. I've been dropped from the queue twice so far, and starting back over at 1100 minutes TWICE is beyond irritating. I've pretty much only had bad experiences with Fileplanet nearly every time I've used it in the past (dropped from queues, lost access to the download since I wasn't at my computer RIGHT when it made its ding, terrible to middling download rates, etc.).

My point here is that none of you guys are perfect. So, why are you guys trying to make him feel like shit when I am sure you yourself have done something that warrants a similar reaction. Hopefully the people reacting to that treated you a bit nicer.
Yes, animals die all the time due to my callous laziness. Wait, no they don't, because I have a shred of decency. He SHOULD feel bad, two animals died because he couldn't be bothered to expend the tiniest amount of effort. Nearly every county, if not city, has a rescue society and/or shelters. Hell, he could've posted an ad on craigslist and possibly gotten a hit. But nothing was done, and he decided to share that with everyone. Unless he's new to the internet, he should not be remotely surprised at the response. I'm not saying you did something to an animal. I am saying I bet you have done something shitty to some person (or animal) in your life. If you haven't...awesome. Most people have. So never call someone out because whoa hey you've probably done something not cool before? That makes no sense. He did something beyond shitty, and then told people about it. Ample grounds for judgement.

I ended up going with this: Asian Pork Tenderloin. Though I added some ginger, more chili paste (went with a Hunan Chili Sauce), and less sesame oil. And it was nomnomnom when I tested it. Now its in the fridge marinating, and will be in there for 12 hours for maximum flavorgasm! I will report back tomorrow on how it turns out.

Yeah... nowhere in there does it even come close to explaining any real attempt at finding an alternative to killing the dogs because she had to move. They had apparently outlived their usefulness, regardless of whether or not they still had life left in them.
Exactly. I'm pretty much aghast.

I can't think of any more at the moment. Darkstone kicked ass, by the way. It was so sad it was overshadowed by other games.
Yeah, Darkstone was fun to play. At least once, anyway. Anybody here remember the music video that was on the CD? At the time, I loved it. The Darkstone will shiiiiiiiiine LOL, awesome! I'd forgotten all about that "music video." Didn't some minstrel in the town play that song for money? I, for one, am SHOCKED that the Darkstone cameo did not skyrocket that band into fame and fortune.

Simply amazing. I think it might be my favorite pixar movie. As was just mentioned, I also had a huge smile on my face the entire time. Just a great, great movie.
And the short before the movie started was good fun. Good old cartoon fun.
If you don't love this movie, you are dead inside. That's just all there is to it!

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Guitar Hero 3 Replacement Disc Question
|
on: February 25, 2008, 12:35:16 AM

Yes, all copies have this issue. Who knows when/if they'll be replacing the store versions with the 'properly working' ones. Keep in mind - last I read, it'll take 3-4 WEEKS for you to get your game back. This is not like the Rock Band replacement thing where you give them your CC info and they'll send you the game first - you have to mail it to them and such. Oddly enough, there's also a way to return the game back to Activision for a full refund as well, if you want to (just went live yesterday or so). EDIT: Here's the links in question.Actually, I'd be willing to bet that if you bought a copy of the game in the last month or so it isn't affected by this. They prety much sold out of the initial shipment of the title, and when this problem came up they stopped shipping Wii versions out, and then Activision quietly relaunched the game in January. I'd be willing to bet that those are updated discs. I think you should call Activision because I am sure they have a disc number or something to ID if your copy was part of the original pressing that is bad. Yeah, I bought it a couple weeks ago. I'll try giving them a buzz this week to check, good call.
