Alright, so to get ready for the 5th book in the series I went ahead and bought  "A Feast For Crows" and I'm about to start reading it, however, I've heard so many different takes on the book that I'm hesitant to even start it and just move on to book 5. Why? Well many people seem to say that book 4 seems more like a dictionary text with nothing but facts and very little story behind them, and that you'd be better off reading a wiki to catch up at this point than slog through book 4.

So do I read through all of book 4 or should I just wiki the main plot points and get to book 5 asap. Tyrion, Arya, and Jon are my favorite characters and are they covered in book 4 at all?

You might as well trudge through it.  I personally hated this book, but I had invested so much time into the other 3 that I figured I might as well deal with one that was less than stellar.

In Eastern New Mexico, this has been by far the worst allergy season for me.  I even lived in San Antonio for a few years and thought that they couldnt get worse.  This year however, has been horrible.  For the past 2 weeks, my eyes have been running, sneezing, hacking, and all that other fun stuff.  Finally went to the dr. after taking every known OTC medication.  Got an allergy shot which still hasnt helped.  The scary thing now is that all this crap has moved into my lungs making me fill like I am drowning.

Yes, today was the day after the fit test.  I really enjoyed the workout....although I have to take a little longer water break than the 30 seconds.  I am sore from the fit test and from today's workout.  These videos really work the lower body.  My legs were drained after the fit test and even more so from the day 2 workout.
6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Insanity Workout on: March 23, 2010, 08:42:57 PM
Halfway through my workout I moved my dining room table furniture out of the way and did the rest of the workout on the tile.  That really helped out my feet.

After gaining 15lbs during my first semester in graduate school, I decided to give these videos a shot.  I am only on day 2 but Holy Jeebus is this a rough workout.  I am not in the best shape so I have to take a few more breaks than the greek gods and goddesses in the video.  However, it is nice to see people in such good shape taking extra breaks in the video.  The only problem that I am truly having is my feet kill me during the workouts.  I am extremely flat footed and have to wear insoles in all of my workout shoes, but these workouts are killing the outside of my feet.   Any one else have any experience with Sean T's Insanity DVDs?

I thought the first episode was good.  Don't get me wrong, but unlike BoB, I feel no real connection to the characters in this story.  Maybe as the series progresses, that will change. With little to no back story, it was hard to really associate with the characters.

Its been a month since my big snip, and I have no ill effects of the surgery.  All bruising is gone and the boys are normal sized.  Best decision I have ever made in my life.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Cross Roads of Life on: April 15, 2009, 12:58:18 AM
Right now, I have to make a decision within the next month what to do with my life.  The plant where I worked at closed, and I went to work for another facility.  The new job was crap.  65-70 hours mandatory each week and I was on salary.  Safety issues, no help, no tools, etc.  made for a hellish environment.

So now I am faced with a decision.  About 7 years ago, I started RN school but was forced to quit after a family member died.  I have always regretted not completing school and felt that I should be working in a hospital, not 200 ft in the air on a grain elevator.  I spoke with the RN program director and will have to retake both Anatomy and Physiology courses and Microbiology this summer in order to be eligible for admission in the fall.  However, admission isn't a guaranteed since my application is considered late and there are only a limited number of slots.

My old plant manager called me, and is trying to hire me back to the company that I worked for when the plant closed.  Its good money, but I just never felt that is what I was meant to be doing with my life.  That also isn't a guarantee since the company is pretty much in a hiring freeze.

I have my GI Bill and can do VA workstudy to support my family if I choose to go to school.  Things will be tight, but we should live.  Very stressful times with nothing really pushing me in any direction.  Anyone else been in a similar situation?

13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Vasectomy on: March 19, 2009, 01:06:24 AM
Most of the vasectomies that fail or reverse themselves are in the first 4 months or so.  After that, there is a very slim chance of the tubes growing back together.  Plus, your body starts to make antibodies against sperm after the vas, so alot of the sperm that are made, are destroyed by the body and reabsorbed.  The doctor said something about more macrophages?  Anyway, that is one of the main reasons why vasectomies are unsuccessful when they are attempted to be reversed.

Well the procedure has been completed.  It was less painful than getting my teeth cleaned.  The Dr.  hooked me up with some IV Demerol and Valium.  I asked why he gives the meds, and he said that it is a sensitive area for men and wants them to be as comfortable as possible.  Drugs took affect and the procedure began.  Before I knew it, it was over.  It was a quick procedure, maybe 25 minutes.

The road to recover has been pretty easy.  Ice for 48 hours and some ibuprofen.  3 days later, I feel normal without any pain.  Minor bruising but nothing unexpected.

If anyone is thinking of having this done, I would recommend it.

I am glad that you guys made this decision, and the procedure went well. I had meant to come in here earlier and ask why go with an irreversible procedure (vasectomies are irreversible right?) when they have non-surgical options. I believe there is a stent-like device that is placed in the cervix that can be in there for five years. The only reason I bring this up is because what will you do when your child is four or five and maybe you realize you really want another child. Obviously you can adopt, but going forward I would want all options open, and I wouldn't want to be limited to either needing an invitro or have to go through the incredible amount of paperwork and money for adopting when we could just have the stent removed and do it the natural way.

Obviously too late to ask the question, and again I am condemning the action, but just wondering why make it so final when there are other options that leave you more leeway if you change your mind.

When your wife almost dies during her pregnancy, you start to try and prevent that at all cost.  We didn't know the extent, at the time, the damage to her heart.  Also, good luck finding and OB that will tie a woman's tubes at 26.  My vasectomy was the best way to prevent pregnancy.  I understanding your point, but in some situations, this was by far the best way to remove the chances of any more offspring.

The doc said that he would be giving me some IV drugs to make me comfortable and make it to where I dont feel a thing.  I am looking forward to being infertile personally.  I love my daughter but the thought of going through another pregnancy and another first year makes me want to hang myself.  My daughter has yet to sleep through a single night still.

Thanks for the input guys.

After having a rough pregnancy (wife developed heart problems) and the baby being in the hospital 3 times and sick 90% of her life, the wife has finally come to the conclusion that maybe another kid isn't such a good idea.  I have a beautiful 14 month old, but the stress that we have endured the past year has been horrible on my body and mind.  So next Thursday at 3 p.m., I go to have the big snip done.  Anyone here been through the procedure?  Any major complications?  How long did it take for you to recover?  Any regrets?

Are you saying that the new 360 is still really loud?  I thought that the new ones are supposed to be quieter?

I bought an "elite" edition XBox and when the disk spins up, it sounds like a damn jet taking off in my living room.  Much, much louder than my prettier and more silent PS3 that seems to be only good for Blu-Ray at the moment.

So I finally broke down and bought a 360 since the PS3 game selection right now is depressing.  So I hook it up to the 61" Samsung, selected 1080p display, and through in Halo 3.  Now what?  Do I need to register my Xbox online somewhere for the warranty?  Any helpful tips?  I am keeping this loud thing out in the open with plenty of ventilation (just like my PS3) to hopefully negate any overheating issues.

So far Halo 3 is ho hum for me.  Not sure what the hype is about though.  Any other games that are must haves?
25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is it safe to buy a 360 now? on: September 24, 2007, 09:06:12 PM
As a college graduation present to myself, I am seriously considering purchasing a 360 (although I already own a PS3).  Has Microsoft corrected the defects that has caused the rings of death?  Is the elite worth the extra cash?  I never owned the original Xbox so I am a little naive about the system in general.

No college bills whatsoever.  I was able to put my wife through college (all the way through her master's) and receive my bachelor's degree without owing anyone a dime.  I used my GI Bill to pay for both of our education.  Now, its time to see if I can find a job in NM, so that I can join my wife out there.  She took a job at a college there last month while I sit here in San Antonio in our empty house waiting for it to sell.

I work for the government during the week, and have another job on the weekend.  I took a ton of evening classes, and some online if they were available.  It was rough.  I had zero "me" time.

Today, is the first day I had nothing to do when I got home.  I watched a Blu-Ray DVD for the first time on my PS3.  Blu-Ray plus my 61" Samsung looks great BTW.  I cant wait till I get to play some games!

So finally after 10 years of attending college off and on throughout my military career, I graduated college this week.  For the past year and a half, I have worked 2 jobs, and attended college full time.  I barely had time to be a husband to my wife with all my other commitments.  I owe my success to her and with our first child due on Christmas Day, my graduation couldn't have come at a better time.  Now, time to enjoy some down time before our little one comes into the world. I may actually get to fire up my PS3 since I got it 5 months ago.

30  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Cingular Cellphone issue on: June 14, 2007, 07:59:30 PM
Well ended up speaking with an engineer at Cingular about the problem.  She explained to me that this crops up from time to time and has to do with people not dialing area codes when calling.  So for instance, I call my buddy at 470-8765 instead of dialing 210-470-8765, the network chooses a random area code to put on the individuals caller id.

My 3 options given to me by the engineer and by customer service are:

1.  Deal with it and pray it goes away
2.  Change your number
3.  Leave the network

Not very happy with cingular right now.
31  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Cingular Cellphone issue on: June 13, 2007, 07:40:38 PM
I have a strange problem with my cellphone.  For about the past week and a half, people have been calling me saying that my cellphone number showed up on their caller ID.  These are people I have no clue who they are or where they are.  So far, I have probably had about 25-30 calls on my phone ranging from New Jersey to California.  I would think that this was just a phone issue, but I checked my dialed call list and none of these numbers show up.  What is really weird, is that it is happening to my wife's cellphone as well.

I called Cingular and they sent new SIM cards.  Replaced those and it is still happening.  Called back yesterday and they fiddled with something on their end.  Today, I have had about 3 calls....I have started to ignore them because the people are quite angry.

Anyone got any ideas?

Which are illegal, no?

I never thought they were illegal. Or is it considered a concealed weapon for some reason or another?

It appears that the wiki hivemind says they are illegal in one way or another (possession, selling, buying) for civilians in many states/jurisdictions, but legal for government and military personnel.  I had long ago heard they were illegal, although I thought that was more applicable to the out-the-front kind.

I'm sure the legality of them is questionable...
