Quick question - I'm considering this for my eldest.  Since the kids invariably share games, I need to know how many separate save slots there are available.

The issue is the extra $40.  I'll be lucky to pull off the first $40, and even that will have to wait until January.

Ick.  That makes me wish I'd had a little extra money in November.  I'll get by on the 4GB until January.  Now, though, I now that I need to plan for it.

So, say I picked up a Vita on Black Friday am getting a Vita from Santa.  It is bundled with a 4GB memory card.  Is 4GB adequate, or will I be wishing I had more memory?  How much should I be looking to get once the Christmas expenses have expired?
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gunnars, eyewear for gamers and other computer users on: November 27, 2013, 06:14:29 PM
I've been looking at Gunnar for a long while, as I fight with eye strain quite a bit.  Unfortunately, they refuse to make clip-ons, which means they're only useful for people who either don't wear prescription glasses, or can afford to have Gunnar make them a custom prescription set.
9  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How has your life changed since the last "next gen"? on: November 25, 2013, 02:37:05 AM
In 2005 I was still married and still religious.  My kids were two and four, with all the capabilities of kids that age.  I rarely if ever played console games - I didn't get a generation 7 console until 2010.  I'd only been on disability a couple of years, and was still a pretty big mess.

In 2013 I'm 6 1/2 years divorced and an atheist.  My kids are ten and twelve, and gamers to such a degree that I have to share my stuff with them every night.  These days, most of my gaming is on consoles, mostly because I can't afford the PC upgrade routine anymore.  I have a much, much better sense of who I am and what that means, and have a solid understanding of how I came to be where I am.  Through that, while my life isn't objectively better, I've learned how to be happy and find contentment with what I actually have, rather than worrying about what I don't.  While I do still have bad days, overall I'm more content than I have been at any other time in my life.

/edit - I take that back.  There is one in there for Friday.  I missed it, as it didn't look like a Vita thing at first.  *crosses fingers*

13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What is the worst game you've ever played? on: November 20, 2013, 04:47:12 AM
I played (and finished) Daikatana.  It was mediocre, but it was far from the worst game I've played.  Wizards and Warriors ca. 2000 was pretty awful, as the bugs made it unplayable after I'd spent my very limited gaming budget on it.  It still wasn't the worst.

The worst?  1982.  An Atari 2600 port of my favorite arcade classic, and it came out just weeks before my ninth birthday.  I wanted nothing in this world more than to own that game, and sure enough - I got it.  I opened it up, put it in, powered up the system and... was horribly, painfully disappointed.  Yes, I'm talking about you, Atari Pac-Man.

Ah, I forgot about all the F2P titles.   Those would need to be downloaded and, er, configured in advance, too!

You should also get PS+, as in right now. Then "purchase" the free games from the PS4 store to register them and they'll be yours for the duration of your subscription. By the time the kids unwrap the gift, there will most likely already be a different set of games available for free.

I've had PS+ since the day I got my PS3.  It has brought much joy.

Mine is sitting in the closet, waiting for Christmas.   crybaby

Of course, I have a few days without the kids next week, so I'll probably hook it up to ensure that the HDMI ports are working and that it boots correctly, so that Christmas morning doesn't turn into Tech Support Afternoon.  I'll also be able to get it configured and updated so that there won't be an extended 'wait' period after the kids open it up.  Of course, I'm not going to open any of the games, no matter how tempted I am.  I'm just setting it up for the kids, not as an excuse to get to fiddle with it in advance.

I don't suppose any of you early owners can tell a fellow if there are any demos available yet? ninja

interesting new bundle that apparently just appeared on Amazon:  PlayStation 4 and Kindle Fire HDX 7", HDX Display, Wi-Fi, 16 GB - Includes Special Offers

just go an email from Amazon, and it's going to be $599.99, only $30 less than it would be buying them separately.  I figured they'd have a better deal than that.

Given that the Kindle Fire doesn't currently run the Playstation App, I'm not sure what their logic is.

I'm also in 'Shipping Now' from Amazon.  It will be delivered tomorrow.  BF4, Ghosts, and Skylanders will be delivered as well.

I get to open it in ~6 weeks, time which it will spend sitting on the shelf, disguised in an Amazon box, sealed and mocking me.   mad

Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One had some bad publicity when it was first announced, and now a new theory on Reddit suggests the next-gen console could face some new PR challenges. According to the Reddit thread, game journalists are dropping plenty of hints that suggest the Xbox One may have a potential graphics resolution problem.

Theory of hints that suggest that there may be a potential.

Sounds definitive to me.

PS4 + Waiting Until Later.

I've got a PS4 on preorder at Amazon for the kids for Christmas.  It's going to be tough - I've been putting back for it since early summer, and it will represent nearly all of the Christmas shopping for the year.  I should be able to manage a second controller and one or two games, but that'll be it.  I felt the kids out a while back, and they definitely chose a single large, shared gift over a bunch of smaller ones.  I usually can't spend this much, but the family games together enough to make it worth the extra effort.

The '+Waiting Until Later' bit has to do with the fact that I'll be getting it in November, but won't be opening it until the end of December.  If it comes out and ends up being garbage, I'll still have time to return it, unopened, and make a different choice before the holidays.

There are many nations in the world and many who could step up and deal with it yet they don't. It seems the US feel they have to when they don't, where is the rest of the world in this.

It is about time other nations of the world got involved in these issues.

I agree.  The rest of the world knows we will, and they're happy to let us take the expense, the risk, and the heat, and then bitch at us for intervening if things go wrong.  It's their turn.  Then again, I'm not sure I want to bet the Geneva Convention on making that point.

It also looks like we'll once again get the Bioware conversation wheel that has gone from novel to a system to clearly identify the "alignment" of each option, turning dialogue into a numbers game instead of roleplaying.
I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but there's now an option to have each choice spell out specifically what will happen if you choose it.

That's part of the problem. Clear consequences make the choices feel like a spreadsheet instead of something more dynamic, such as the choices you make in The Witcher. In Mass Effect 3, almost every choice was either Paragon (in the upper right side of the wheel), Renegade (in the lower right side of the wheel), or more information (every other choice, which would eventually return you to the basic two choices). There were very, very few exceptions to this, apart from the occasional blue or red option. If you wanted to play a Renegade, all you had to do was click the lower right option, or the red option if it was available. That was more or less it for the entire game. The same for Paragon, only using the upper right and blue options. It was as shallow as it gets. Real choice should make you think. I've seen nothing about Dragon Age or Bioware's modern RPG design that indicates they have the faintest idea how to do this.

By the way, Mass Effect 1 managed to use the conversation wheel and make it at least slightly unpredictable. Mass Effect 2 standardized it but still kept some degree of unpredictability.

I absolutely agree.  The roleplaying aspect of games should include consideration of what you're saying and of the decisions you're making.  You should be deciding what makes the most sense for your character to say and what the consequences of each of the options are.  Recent Bioware games don't have that.  I just started ME3.  My Commander Shepard is a good guy, continuing saves all the way from the beginning.  Every dialogue option I make in ME3 will be upper right on the wheel.  It makes thinking through your choices irrelevant, as you know in advance which one is going to be the asshole response and which is going to be the good guy response.

37  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Germany's War on Homeschooling on: August 31, 2013, 05:14:44 AM
The only way the schools can create 'automatons' is if the schools are the only source of information kids are exposed to.

I teach my kids, first and foremost, how to think.  Not what to think, but how to listen, how to question, how to doubt, how to decide.  I didn't wait and see if the schools would do so, but taught them before and throughout their time in school.  We discuss issues all the time, refreshing these concepts.

The schools is welcome to present any set of ideas that they like.  My kids know how to think.

I'm a fan of retro-futurism.  I've read a lot of old pieces, and seen a lot of predictions from the turn of the century through the 70s, and the number one thing they get wrong is scale.  Nobody ever really conceived at how efficient miniaturization of technology would be.  Everyone predicted that we'd have computers in our homes.  Nobody predicted that we'd have them in our pocket.
