I love that they made Mystery Heroes a standard feature.  It is my go-to when I need to unwind.  With no hero selection you don't get that super-Genji player on the other team dominating the game, or people complaining about composition, or people refusing to play the healer.  It's much more laid back as a result, and is a nice break from some of the more structured modes.

Good point.  We need the money!

Thanks... um... who are we thanking these days when things go wrong, anyway?

The DB restore is taking it's sweet time (the database is f'ing huge) -- I'm probably going to just revert to the old board software when it's back up unless it suddenly finishes this evening before I go to bed.  Otherwise in the morning I will swing it over to the old install and do this another time.  Definitely I/O constrained on doing 2.5 million post inserts.

Hey, folks.  I do post here occasionally (and not just when OO is down!), but I don't post nearly regularly enough to have thought it appropriate to request help here.  That someone with more clout here felt it was worth doing on my behalf was a kind thing.  Thanks, Isg (and everyone else.)

Wow, why the hostility?

Nothing fixes it.  Microsoft broke it intentionally to 'encourage' people to upgrade.  I do not regret going to Sony because Sony fixed it (or is somehow perfect), but because I'm glad I got out of the Microsoft ecosystem.

The irony is, had you gone Xbox One this round it wouldn't be an issue.

No, the 360 games would all still require multiple accounts.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Clarify something for me concerning the X360 and Live Gold on: February 07, 2015, 04:28:24 AM
If that's right, then it is seriously screwed up.  I wish I'd known that before I'd plunked down an additional $60 for another year of Gold last month.  There is no way I can pay $200 a year so my kids can play together - which basically invalidates all of our 360 multiplayer titles, leaving our only multiplayer title being Destiny on the PS4 - which they can't play together.  The kids have been looking forward to tonight (as it isn't a school night) for days so they could play Halo Reach together.  Now they're in tears, I'm pissed, and I'm out a now-useless Gold subscription.

I do not regret my decision to go Sony this time around.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Clarify something for me concerning the X360 and Live Gold on: February 07, 2015, 04:15:03 AM
I used to have the family gold pack on the 360.  They discontinued that, and gave us a set of individual accounts for each person in the household for the same time period.  Those expired not too long ago.  We currently only have a single Live Gold account.

I was under the impression that as long as one person on the system had a gold account, other people on the system could play online, but I just spent half an hour trying to figure out how to let my kids play Halo online together, which they've been doing for years, and can't seem to make it work - or find a clear answer as to what is required.

Does every person on a 360 need Gold to play online now?

Quick question - I'm considering this for my eldest.  Since the kids invariably share games, I need to know how many separate save slots there are available.

The issue is the extra $40.  I'll be lucky to pull off the first $40, and even that will have to wait until January.

Ick.  That makes me wish I'd had a little extra money in November.  I'll get by on the 4GB until January.  Now, though, I now that I need to plan for it.

So, say I picked up a Vita on Black Friday am getting a Vita from Santa.  It is bundled with a 4GB memory card.  Is 4GB adequate, or will I be wishing I had more memory?  How much should I be looking to get once the Christmas expenses have expired?
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gunnars, eyewear for gamers and other computer users on: November 27, 2013, 06:14:29 PM
I've been looking at Gunnar for a long while, as I fight with eye strain quite a bit.  Unfortunately, they refuse to make clip-ons, which means they're only useful for people who either don't wear prescription glasses, or can afford to have Gunnar make them a custom prescription set.
29  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How has your life changed since the last "next gen"? on: November 25, 2013, 02:37:05 AM
In 2005 I was still married and still religious.  My kids were two and four, with all the capabilities of kids that age.  I rarely if ever played console games - I didn't get a generation 7 console until 2010.  I'd only been on disability a couple of years, and was still a pretty big mess.

In 2013 I'm 6 1/2 years divorced and an atheist.  My kids are ten and twelve, and gamers to such a degree that I have to share my stuff with them every night.  These days, most of my gaming is on consoles, mostly because I can't afford the PC upgrade routine anymore.  I have a much, much better sense of who I am and what that means, and have a solid understanding of how I came to be where I am.  Through that, while my life isn't objectively better, I've learned how to be happy and find contentment with what I actually have, rather than worrying about what I don't.  While I do still have bad days, overall I'm more content than I have been at any other time in my life.

Grumble.  Still no hint of a Vita deal without going to a physical shop.

/edit - I take that back.  There is one in there for Friday.  I missed it, as it didn't look like a Vita thing at first.  *crosses fingers*

Several hours of 'testing' and the PS4 is running just fine.  I'll have to run further tests to be sure, of course.
33  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What is the worst game you've ever played? on: November 20, 2013, 04:47:12 AM
I played (and finished) Daikatana.  It was mediocre, but it was far from the worst game I've played.  Wizards and Warriors ca. 2000 was pretty awful, as the bugs made it unplayable after I'd spent my very limited gaming budget on it.  It still wasn't the worst.

The worst?  1982.  An Atari 2600 port of my favorite arcade classic, and it came out just weeks before my ninth birthday.  I wanted nothing in this world more than to own that game, and sure enough - I got it.  I opened it up, put it in, powered up the system and... was horribly, painfully disappointed.  Yes, I'm talking about you, Atari Pac-Man.

Ah, I forgot about all the F2P titles.   Those would need to be downloaded and, er, configured in advance, too!

You should also get PS+, as in right now. Then "purchase" the free games from the PS4 store to register them and they'll be yours for the duration of your subscription. By the time the kids unwrap the gift, there will most likely already be a different set of games available for free.

I've had PS+ since the day I got my PS3.  It has brought much joy.

Mine is sitting in the closet, waiting for Christmas.   crybaby

Of course, I have a few days without the kids next week, so I'll probably hook it up to ensure that the HDMI ports are working and that it boots correctly, so that Christmas morning doesn't turn into Tech Support Afternoon.  I'll also be able to get it configured and updated so that there won't be an extended 'wait' period after the kids open it up.  Of course, I'm not going to open any of the games, no matter how tempted I am.  I'm just setting it up for the kids, not as an excuse to get to fiddle with it in advance.

I don't suppose any of you early owners can tell a fellow if there are any demos available yet? ninja

I do hope they're not trying a reboot.

interesting new bundle that apparently just appeared on Amazon:  PlayStation 4 and Kindle Fire HDX 7", HDX Display, Wi-Fi, 16 GB - Includes Special Offers

just go an email from Amazon, and it's going to be $599.99, only $30 less than it would be buying them separately.  I figured they'd have a better deal than that.

Given that the Kindle Fire doesn't currently run the Playstation App, I'm not sure what their logic is.
