I just saw something weird and I figure you guys might have a better handle on it. I accidentally dropped an elementary school in the middle of an industrial area... and I got green smiley faces from all the buildings saywhat. Am I supposed to be placing them there too, just for the happiness benefit? I wouldn't think so.

I don't think anyone mentioned my new favorite mod. Dynamic Resolution allows supersample anti-aliasing (SSAA) that far outstrips the AA that comes in the game. In my case (gtx 970), it allows the game render at 4k and then downsample to my monitor's 1200p, greatly reducing the shimmering/jaggies you see when you move the camera around the map (especially when you've got buildings fully upgraded to shiny/reflective glass towers.) The mod is slider based so you can adjust it to where you're getting the maximum out of your video card without suffering from slideshow performance.

There was a problem earlier in the underground map that made the metro lines invisible, but from what the workshop page says he put a workaround in that's working good for me.

Well yes, but it wouldn't be an actual cell phone call - it would be a call patched through to like a satellite. The bit about the communicators is that they somehow functioned ship-to-planet on their own network.

Kind of splitting hairs since the Enterprise when in orbit is functionally a satellite relay

But how high would the Enterprise orbit?

The space shuttle typically had an orbit of 200 miles, but would sometimes go to 400 miles.  source

Satellite phone satellites orbit at about 120 miles, while geosynchronous orbit satellites (DirecTV) are at a whopping 22,000 miles high.

In "The Savage Curtain" Spock told Abraham Lincoln that the Enterprise was orbiting at 643 miles above the surface of Excalbia, but in "Relics" it was mentioned that the Enterprise was in a synchronous orbit.  Then in "Future's End", they mention that the Voyager is orbiting the earth at about 12,000 mile "high orbit."

That's kind of nutty, since in Star Trek you usually hear them either call for "standard orbit" or "high orbit", and since a geosynchronous orbit seems logical to use as a standard, it doesn't make any sense for high orbit to be lower than standard.

In conclusion, Voyager sucked.

Geosynchronous just means that the satellite/starship is maintaining orbit above a fixed point on the ground. You can do that at 100 miles or 50,000 miles. Obviously the higher the orbit the faster the satellite must be to maintain position, but geosynchronous isn't tied to an altitude.

Your conclusion still remains valid though.

I don't have faith in the system, I'm just saying that there were more options available than what have been explored by Manning, Snowden, etc.  We can't really assess their effectiveness if they've never been attempted, now can we?

My problem with that is there was plenty of opportunity for your options to come to the fore when Binney and Co. came forward. There are 535 members of the Congressional Branch with the temerity to wear the flag pin on their lapel that should have followed up on this information and fought this fight. While I agree we can't know exactly what would have happened should Snowden have attempted those options, I do think he could make a pretty accurate guess.

We also agree here on another thing: I too would rather be watching hockey. icon_wink
19  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Network printing problem - one computer can't find the printer on: August 28, 2013, 11:23:34 PM
Head into Network and Sharing Center. In the "View your active networks" section, make sure it's set to either Home or Work network. Being set as Public will turn off a lot of your network functionality beyond what you need to get on the internet.

Next, look into the Advanced Sharing Settings.  Make sure "Turn on network discovery" is selected.

When you try adding the printer through "add a printer", try using "Add a local printer" instead of the "Add a network..." option. From there you can "Create a new port", set the type to "Standard TCP/IP Port and then Next on to a screen where you can manually input the printer's TCP/IP address. There you have the option of letting the computer try to pick the driver automatically or selecting one after the port information has been tested.  I rarely like using the initial "network" option because things as simple as the printer being in "sleep" mode can cause the detection program to miss it.

Quote from: Isgrimnur on August 28, 2013, 06:24:32 PM

As I've said before, there are three branches of government.  There are Congressional oversight committees, and there is the judicial system through which he could have sued anonymously.

You have a lot of faith in the "system" that a lot of people don't. Snowden was sitting on reams of information showing the US monitors just about every form of communication beyond smoke signals. He knows what's happened with NSA whistleblowers in the past. At that point, who does he feel safe contacting? How do you look at that much information and not feel there has to be some collusion from all branches of the government?

A congressman (even a Rep wanting to score points on Obama) would sell Snowden's ass out the moment it became politically prudent. They have a vested interest in the status quo because it fills their coffers during their time in office and gets them jobs on the college/lecture/lobbying circuit once they're out. Even now, after the brief initial show of indignation for the cameras, most of their concern is making sure a leak like this doesn't happen again. Ooo, and look over there: Syria <whew>!!

Anonymously through the judicial?  He's staring at data saying there is no more "anonymous", and judges are deferring more and more to enforcement agencies. For every point brought up in court the government attorneys would giggle amongst themselves and whisper "national security", at which point the judge nods and strikes said point from the record.

Going through any US-based civil rights groups or newspaper would have the FBI blowing in the doors of said group because OMG terrorism! Sure, the NYT will cry out demanding answers, but after a few weeks of congressman from both sides of the aisle showing up on Fox News saying they needed to contain this information (because, again, OMG terrorism!) people will soon move on to the Miley twerking controversy.

Snowden went forward with this information in the only way he felt would accomplish some change. "Checks and balances" is dead, except for the checks those in power are getting to maintain their balances.

The Buffalo Bills plan on starting undrafted rookie quarterback Jeff Tuel in their regular-season opener if EJ Manuel cannot play, coach Doug Marrone said Monday.

The Bills host the New England Patriots in their opener on Sept. 8.

If Tuel does indeed start for the Bills in Week 1, he will become the first undrafted rookie quarterback in the common draft era (since 1967) to start a season opener, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

So they'll have that going for them, which is nice.

A couple years ago a restaurant/arcade called Buster & Daves opened near us. After waiting a few months for the novelty to wear off and the crowds to die down my wife and I went for dinner and to check out their games. Food and prices weren't bad -- they want you to spend money in the game room, after all -- but it was pretty loud, as you would expect.

The games were disappointing. I didn't see any of the classics that I used to play, just a lot of driving and shooting and dancing games plus a few of those carnival-type machines where you try to pluck a prize with a claw or knock coins off a shelf or whatever. Lots of kid stuff.

I had intended to load a game card with five bucks, but there was just nothing there I wanted to play. Never went back, probably never will.

My buddies and I went into D&B's the first time a few years ago after catching a movie in the same mall. The food was indeed pretty good and we weren't too impressed by the games selection until we found the eight-station racing game: sit-down, hydraulics, the works!  I was there with my cousin and a couple friends we've had since high school (25+ years) and we were all instantly juveniles again. Trash talking, wall planting, well voiced opinions on each others questionable lineage, BEER: we had an outstanding time! Whenever I go to that theater I always leave time to head in there for food and games.

If you know the IP address of the printer I'd try pinging it from the 2.4ghz machine.  If the ping works you should be able to set that address up as a usable port to print to.

By any chance, is your router set up with a "guest" wireless network?  Guest networks allow wireless access to the internet only, and block access to internal devices (home desktops, printers, file servers).
