I know what I'll be using my first points for: An additional 30 shared storage slots! I've already got 20, and I want more! They are incredibly practical when you've got crafting alts and want to have a shared pool of crafting resources.

It looks like I'll be getting more than 3000 free points right away, which is nice. smile In fact, the wording makes it sound like I might even get several thousand more points than that just for hanging around this summer.

Indeed. Extra shared storage is a huge bonus.

I figure at least 5000 points for a founder/lifetimer who plays this summer plus whatever they may give retroactively for deed and quest completion (similar to the points given in DDO for faction standings). And if you sign up for and participate in the beta, they may give out bonus points to beta people like they did for DDO.

I have a lifetime sub and I'm not complaining. 500 points a month to spend on more storage or a nice cosmetic cloak or whatever is gravy. And if they make major expansions purchasable with points, maybe by the time Rohan rolls around I can get it too without any real money outlay.

Downside is the inevitable influx of morons who will spam the starter areas with trash and hate speech. Hopefully WB buying Turbine lets them beef up their in-game GM presence before the new F2P model goes live.

I'd be all-in for a classical Greece era Total War. Love the period. Since they usually have the campaign periods span at least 2 centuries, they could have it end with Alexander. I loved Rome:TW, but I usually played other factions than the Romans, because I am more for the Diadochoi period than the rise of Rome itself.

And please. if it is ancient Greece, lets have tactical naval battles.
87  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Mass Effect movie in the works on: May 25, 2010, 10:56:30 PM
The iconic Shepard is male, so I'm guessing the movie would stick with that, if he even appears.

I admit I love the idea. A big CGI budget will be needed though, to give us Turians, Salarians, and Krogan, let alone Elcor and Hanar.

Thanks!

I hate to ask, but is there any way to equate that to Wow level time?

I would say they are about the same. LotRO used to take longer, but Turbine really revamped the starting areas through lvl 30 to make it easier and smoother to lvl up. The problem I see you running into is that not all of the skirmishes open up a lvl 30. You have to reach certain lvls to unlock most skirmishes, but some also require you to complete certain quests. But, if memory serves three of them do open up at lvl 30.

Check the lotro lorebook wiki on skirmishes for the list (it's the first item below the contents).
http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Skirmish_Compendium

As for time to level to 30, it goes fast into the teens and continues on at a good clip into the 20s, slowing slightly as you approach 30. I know a guildie went from 7 to 25 over the weekend, but it's his 5th alt so he knows the drill pretty well.

Hey, wait a minute. They were going to blow up the plane, right? So SmokeyLocke couldn't leave? Was that their explosives, rather than Widmore's? If so, WTF was going on with Widmore? And why didn't Jack et al figure out whose explosives those were?

Or was there not enough time for Richard's group to get there, sneak in to place the explosives, and get out again?

Would the Dharma cache have had that much C4? Also, how would they sneak past Widmore's guards to plant the explosives? I'm going with Widmore booby-trapping the plane and leaving a couple guards. Sucks to be those guards.

On the other hand, Hunters are the most commonly played class in the game by a large factor, so you'll have an even harder time finding groups when you need them.

I don't think Hunters are as over-played as they used to be. On Silverlode I see a lot of Wardens these days. I see all classes of course but the days of getting in a fellowship and it being 3 hunters, 2 champions and yourself are past.

My Warden alt is 42. I have no complaints. They do solo very well, have some self-only ports - Ost Guruth, Esteldin, Tinnudir (and Rivendell at 44), and the run speed buff. My Runekeeper is only 24, so I have little insight on how they play at higher levels. My main just hit 65, and is a Minstrel. I have no trouble soloing with one. Fights way back in the day used to be tedious, yes, but when they added Warspeech, and if you trait for dps, you can kill mobs rather fast (although not as fast as a champ, hunter or runekeeper).

Gotta narrow the focus to a few candidates. The real question is, Why is Kate still alive?

We learned (if Jack is right) that Smokeylocke doesn't need all the candidates to leave alive...he needs them all dead. But he has to trick them into killing themselves/each other. So we have Hurley, Jack, and Sawyer left as candidates, right? Maybe Kate will narrow them down further.

I think Hurley's going to be the last man standing, btw.

I've actually been betting on Kate being the final island savior.  Just a wild hunch based on a few hints here and there.  Jack is being set up too obviously as the main guy so i kind of ruled him out.  I can definitely see cases for Sawyer or Hurley, but i like the misdirection of Kate.  One thing i saw when rewatching lighthouse was "Austen" listed on the compass - of course they are saying she was eliminated or crossed out but no one's really said why.  The more they play her as being lame and inconsequential the more i think they are trying to mislead us for a twist.  Last hunch was based on reading the original pilot had Jack dying and Kate was supposed to lead the survivors, so this might be consistent with the original vision.  Or i could just be blinded by my Kate fandom smile

I think Kate still has a part to play - she already seems to have begun to turn Claire away from unLocke. I imagine there will be another showdown between Kate and Claire. Claire needs to be reunited with Aaron somehow, but not in her current "tainted" by unLocke condition. The only people I see having any influence with her now are Kate and possibly Jack. How it plays out, I have no idea, but they could have easily killed Kate off last night if the writers had been so inclined.

The skirmishes are great. If you are looking for one that is short, I recommend Stand at Amon Sul, which takes about 15 minutes.

Another bonus with the skirmishes is that they do provide lots of XP if you run them regularly. I always see people complain they have trouble leveling from mid 30s to 40. This is not an issue if you do skirmishes. The three you can do by 35 will get you a huge chunk of a level if you do each one just once a day. (This assumes you don't fail, since the bonus XP for completion is sizable.)

I usually run skirmishes solo. I finally did a couple 3-mans and it ups the challenge a fair bit. The mobs go from swarm/normal with signature bosses to normal/sig with elite bosses. The kicker is that the friendly npcs don't scale up, so if you need to keep them alive (like Mathi at Gondamon) it gets pretty hairy sometimes. Some of the lieutenants change as well. You'll never see a Priestess of Flame or the elemental Grims when solo for example. If you are new to skirmishes, I'd say start with a few solo to get the hang of it and earn some marks to level up your soldier.

I'm really enjoying the crafting. I'm a total packrat too, so my vault is stuffed with scap iron, steel, rubber, tin foil, gears, etc. The only thing I never seem to have enough of is scrap fasteners, since those are used for both weaponry and armour. I'm working on pistols now. My craft skill is 54 so I can just now make a hunting pistol that uses medium ammo. If you need low level melee weapons/guns/armour, let me know. My character is Alaina. I'm up around Kingman these days.

I thought it was a little pricey for the length of the mission, but it is a good mission. She also brings stealth to your squad, since she will blink in and out, backstabbing away pretty much non-stop. At one point in her mission I just crouched behind cover and flung a few shots out while she cleaned house. It also rounds out the party to a full "dirty dozen" plus Shepard. Since I have been playing through as a Sentinel, the new SMG was very much appreciated as well. It is quite accurate and has a long range. It eats ammo though.

Oh, and the voice actress does a terrific job as well. I like Kasumi almost as much as Tali.

Anyone else playing this?

Chris

Nice to see they added another 2000 keys - that first batch went up late in the day and were gone pretty fast so it was easy to miss.

I played the 10-day trial back in January. I'm waiting out the 60-day delay before I apply the new key from mmorpg.com. I should be back in next week. Having only played to around 9th level, I can't speak for the higher level content, but I enjoyed the low level stuff a lot. Tons of crafting - everything I was wearing I made myself. Also made my own weapons, and at 9th my arsenal was a 3-iron, a lawnmower blade, a fireplace poker, a crossbow, and two paintball zip guns. Combat took me a little time to get used to. The animations are a bit stiff as well.

The missions are mostly pretty standard, although some of the dialogue is pretty funny. The world is large. The towns are quest hubs but I've also stumbled on npcs out in the middle of nowhere with a mission or two. I would advise to be careful where you assign skill points - there is no respec I am aware of. I like the idea of assigning points earned as you level - gives me an Asheron's Call or Anarchy Online vibe.

I would think that Rohan may be next after Volume III, but then again, with the Hobbit being made into a movie, it wouldn't surprise me to continue further north from Mirkwood instead, before heading south to Rohan.

Some sleuths on the official forums have already dug up indications that an area south of Eregion (Enedwaith) has already been added to the landblocks in-game, but is inaccessible at present. So, it's looking like we'll be able to get closer to Rohan by heading south from Mirobel at some point. It makes sense - the Rangers and Elrond's sons did ride south into Rohan through Eregion to meet Aragorn before heading to Dunharrow.

Just a heads up to anyone interested in this. mmorpg.com is currently giving away 2,000 keys (about 1,500 left as I type this) that allow you to play for 30 days free and counts as a full retail key worth 39.99. You do need to supply payment info when creating an account, but can cancel before the 30 days are up to avoid billing if you decide not to subscribe. Only proviso for using the key is that you don't have a current sub, nor have tried their 10-day trial in the last 60 days. Good value if you get one - saves the entire retail purchase price.

Edit: The keys are gone now.

There were no Hanar you could talk to. I saw a few hovering on the Citadel. Then there was the whole joke about the "Blasto the Hanar Spectre" movie you could hear about on Illium. "Enkindle This!"

Elcor might be cool as a mobile heavy weapons platform, but has anyone seen one actually ambulate? They move on all fours and I suspect they do it... slowwwly. I could be wrong, but I always think of a Sloth when I see them.

Yep, likely Ashley or Kaiden become spectres, or just have a similar role in the Alliance military like they already do.  There's different types of spectres.  Shepard is portrayed as the leader type, but guys like Nihlus worked alone and simply commandeered what he needed.

With that out of the way, the devs have clearly stated that these ME1 characters will have a much, much larger role in ME3, not just Liara, but Ashley and Kaiden.  This is part of the reason why they weren't in ME2.

I don't doubt that whoever is still alive of the Ashley/Kaidan duo will have a larger part in ME3. But, it would seem like a lot of work to have both voice actors do a ton of dialogue to cover redundant scenes if they are crewmembers. Being a Spectre but not a crewmember would work if they are some sort of Alliance liason for instance - even being on Normandy in the CIC.

The ME2 npc getting a lot of notice right now is Matriarch Aethyta - the bartender on Illium, who may or may not be Liara's father. That would be hilarious to have her on board. Also, we have yet to see a Volus crewmember. There must be one Volus in the galaxy that isn't a complete tool. I can't see a Hanar or Elcor fitting in, but anything is possible. Hmmm - how big is EDI's AI core? Could she download herself into a geth body and join Shepard on missions?  slywink

Hopes for ME3
Spoiler for Hiden:
1) Improved resource gathering.   I didn't find the planet-probing too tedious, but it could definitely be improved on.  Perhaps adding a mechanic where you could just trade credits for resources in a pinch would be a good idea?  And from a story point of view, I didn't quite get why I was allowed to collect precious ores on inhabited planets without having to deal with the natives.  Was my goody-two-shoes Shepard stealing platinum from poor miners the entire time? Maybe this was explained away in the codex somewhere, but it seemed a bit weird to me.  Now that I think about it, restricting resource-gathering to uninhabited worlds, but making the per-world rewards greater, could be a good way to add to the sense of exploration while speeding the whole process up.

2) Return of (most) of the crew from ME2 as full-fledged NPCs.   I imagine this might be hard to pull off, given the wide variety of possible deaths at the end of ME2, but I really hope at least half the crew makes this kind of transition.  Mordin, Tali, Legion and Garrus are all great and I'd hate to see them reduced to Liara-style cameos (or less) in the next game.  Heck, make Liara a member of the crew again, too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Kaidan in the next one, but I've got a feeling he's being set up as some sort of anti-Shepard big-bad for the series finale.

3) Less hokey endboss.   Speaking of antagonists, I (sorta) get why the Collectors were building a giant terminator at the end of the game, but it was still kind of silly.    Maybe a human-reaper didn't have to look like a really big dude?   I hope Harbinger's ultimate bad-ass form doesn't turn out to be a giant robot T-Rex or Trilobite or something.

Spoiler for Hiden:
re: 2) Most speculation is that Liara will be back as a crewmember in ME3. She is the only crewmember from ME1/2 that can not be dead in someone's plotline. Ashley. Wrex, Kaidan, and everyone from ME2 can be killed at some point. There are already fan efforts afoot on the Bioware forums to keep at least Tali and Garrus "alive". I saw a dev post that they are already working on "new" recruitable crew for ME3, so I'm going with mostly new + Liara. At least Joker and EDI should be back.

I can't see Kaidan being a major player in ME3 - for perhaps 50% of the people who are bringing forward an ME1 playthrough, he died on Virmire.

I expect Harbinger will look like Sovereign.

There is a clue in the cutscene right before as well, If the team leader calls for "covering fire", your vent specialist is about to die. If they call for "suppressing fire", your vent specialist should live. I noticed this while watching a few different people's playthroughs posted to Youtube.

The two crew members with whom did not gain loyalty were Jack and Samara.  I sided with Miranda in the Jack/Miranda catfight after Jack's mission, (thinking with my johnson.)  I'm thinking that's why Jack wasn't loyal.  With Samara I made some bad dialogue choices with her daughter in the bar, who then "went for drinks" and never came back, (brought back memories of my college years.)  The only crew member I lost in the final mission was Jack, who got swarmed by the bugs for seemingly no reason near the end.  Jack was by far my most used party member.  Her fully upgraded energy blast rules.  I chose Samara as my FF Chrystal Chronicles style "bucket carrier" for the last mission.  I wonder if I would have chosen Jack to do it if the fates of the two would have been reversed?

Spoiler for Hiden:
About that result. You were doomed to lose someone at that stage with neither Jack nor Samara loyal. You need to use one of those two to generate the bubble, and they must be loyal to pull it off, or someone else in the team will be taken by the swarm. In this case Samara failed and either Jack or the other on your team was toast.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Sooo.. what did everyone do? I like having the decisions, but it's painful that you have no idea of how they'll turn out in ME3
Geth - I rewrote the Geth heritics... sure hope that one doesn't come to back bite me in the ass.
Quarians - I didn't share the Geth info or about Tali's father
Collector Base - I blew that sucker sky high. Of course if the 3rd game is like this one I'll be sad if people die because I didn't have enough tech or something.
Genophage - Had Mordin keep the data
Samara - Saved Samara
Romance - Miranda (Would have gone with Kelly too but we only went to dinner)
Victory - Won with all crew members loyal and alive

Decisions I made, and other stuff:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Geth: released the virus to rewrite them. I'm hoping that since they were working for the Reapers they will have some tech they can provide in ME3 to help out. Assuming the gamble works and they switch sides.
Quarians: didn't mention the research and kept Tali's father's name out of the mud. From an email I got later though, one of the admirals figured out my deception, so the Quarians may have their anti-geth weapon anyway. There was no way I would have betrayed Tali's wishes on that one. She was a squadmate of mine going back to ME1.
Collector base: destroyed the base. My paragon Shepard had no qualms about it either, seeing as how TIM wanted it saved. At that point I didn't trust him at all. It was also cool when Miranda backed me up and resigned from Cerberus rather than take any more orders from TIM.
Genophage: wiped the local copy the Salarian had stored, but had Mordin make a backup. I asked him about it later and he mentioned he still had it "back there somewhere."
Samara: sided with Samara, and let her kill her daughter
Romance: ended up with Miranda. I wavered and almost switched to Tali, but I was nervous she would be sick on the final mission and it would affect her survival chances.
End result: everyone survived, even though both Jack and Zaeed were not loyal. (I sided with Miranda in their tiff and that way lost Jack's loyalty, and I saved the workers on Zaeed's mission and thus the Blue Suns leader got away, which pissed off Zaeed.) I never used either for anything on the Collector base - they just stayed with the pack. I did use them both on other earlier side missions, which may have helped in some hidden way towards their survival on the Collector base.
Paragon/Renegade: ended at about 85% Paragon and 17% Renegade.

Loved every minute of it, except perhaps some of the planet probing for minerals. I did find several side missions that way though. Looking forward to the DLC of the hover tank. Also wanted to mention how awesome I thought the voice cast is, especially Liz Sroka (Tali), Michael Beattie (Mordin), and Martin Sheen of course.

So - completed the game, at a glorious 34 hours...man . this is one great game! Especially the end is...wow!  icon_eek

I was at the edge of the seat several times, and yelled out several times, in joy and anger!

best game ever! Its a cinematic experience to be sure, and some may say its less of a game for it, but for me, its more of a game.

some spoilers re the ending

Spoiler for Hiden:
I had one team member die after miranda's biotic barrier - is there any way to avoid that? I'm thinking taking the Justicar instead, but why? Also, I decided NOT to save the station for research...does the fact that I see thousands of what appears to be reaver ships afterwards have anything to do with that, or is that just a portent of things to come?

Also, there was some cryptic remarks at the end that makes me wait anxiously for the 3rd game!

re that:

Spoiler for Hiden:
We are your salvation through destruction? What is up with that? I'm thinking they mean we will destroy ourselves if allowed to continue? And what about the thing Harbinger said about more powerfull beings?

GIVE ME MASS EFFECT 3 NOW!

thanks, GOTY, I had a great time

Spoiler for Hiden:
You get the cutscene of the Reaper armada whether you keep or blow the Collector base. It is just a harbinger (ha!) of things to come in ME3.

And yes, that final run was awesome.
Spoiler for Hiden:
I had Miranda leading the second team and when she was gut-shot at the door and slumped down my heart stopped for a second. Then she got up and shook it off. That flimsy black outfit must be stronger than it appears. Also, I almost felt sorry for the Collector leader when Harbinger deserted him at the end, just before the station blew up. "You have failed. ... Releasing control."

I went with Miranda, since to my Shepard it was the obvious choice. I can't stand Jack. If it was a personality contest though, Tali wins by a mile. She would be my choice, except for the whole being an alien species that has serious health issues. And yeah, her accent is adorable.

finished the game today, very enjoyable and can't wait for Mass Effect 3

all side missions and story = 35hrs

I just recruited Tali last night, and have to wait for her loyalty quest to pop-up.  Other than some random exploration, I guess all I have left is the start of the final mission.  I'm kinda bummed about that, though I'm already plotting my 2nd playthrough.   icon_wink

You saved one of the best loyalty missions for last. A couple of very emotional moments in that one.

Spoiler for Hiden:
So.. to clear it up.   Not taking the IFF mission don't have an impact...but once you take it you need to get your butt in gear?

Exactly.
