Boy do I feel like a moron for uninstalling my CB client and letting the OB client from Fileplanet inflate and patch.  icon_cry

The patcher was going okay before I went out, but when I got back, it had stalled at maybe 2% further than when I left. Re-started it and it stalled again a little further long. Now it seems to have stalled at 49.8%

It does seem to be like a Turbine patcher in that it remembers what it already patched if you close it. It starts up where it left off.

Looks like Turbine is working hard at cushioning the whole Radiance gear gating that was brought in with Moria.

See dev Amlug's blog post from today:

http://my.lotro.com/amlug/

My main is 60 but sports zero Radiance gear so far. I can see getting some when this goes live.

If you have characters at or near 60 and would like some nice ixp runes, check out the new bounty quests from a dwarf in Esteldin. There are 5 quests offered, 3 solo (sig mob) and 2 are small group (EM mob). The quest rewards are general ixp plus runestones with 60,000 or more ixp. Yes 60,000 ixp for a level 60 sig mob. And, they are repeatable, daily (although I"m not sure if there is a 3-time maximum like the bounty quests in Barrow Downs).

The target mobs are all over the map, so if you're a hunter it helps. One in the Shire, one in Forochel, one in Trollshaws, one in Fields of Fornost, and one in Misty Mountains. A very surprised level 11 RK in Rushock Bog watched me kill a level 60 sig wolf tonight.  icon_lol

Nice I didnt know about those, where is the Dwarf in Esteldin?

The dwarf is right near the stable master, the other side of the pillars, facing east.

His ring may only light up for level 60's, but a level 59 guildie was able to get the quests and complete them.

Ten Ton Hammer just made some closed beta keys available a few minutes ago. I managed to grab one. Might be some left as I type this. The announcement is here: http://forums.tentonhammer.com/showthread.php?threadid=45078

I'm considering the Lifetime sub, but I won't pull the trigger until I've actually had some time in the open beta. I did well with the lifetime sub to LOTRO - I still play regularly, so it's been "free" for quite a while now.

I'm seeing a lot of posts that since Hellgate London was a bust, and a lifetime sub is being offered for Champions, that it is all some sort of scam perpetrated by Bill Roper. The logic there boggles my mind.

I'm glad to hear a good percentage of closed beta testers are leaning to a lifetime sub. It speaks well for the state of the game.

I would never count out the High Mage. Even if he left a smouldering corpse, which he didn't.  icon_wink

I too was quite taken aback by Laseen's fate. In fact, I pretty much did a Darth Vader "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at that part. There have been a lot of big name fatalities in the latest books.

Only a couple weeks until Dust of Dreams.
168  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Champions Online (Cryptic's new MMO) on: August 02, 2009, 05:45:54 PM
Here's a summary of the roles you can use to customize your character:

http://www.muppetfleet.com/categories/item/11-roles-replace-classes-in-champions-online

4 roles achieved through setting your stance: Guardian (balance), Avenger (offence), Sentinel (defence) and Protector (support).

It sounds like you can do this on the fly, so group members could switch out roles to experiment a bit. It doesn't add skills, just augments or reduces some as a trade-off. You'd still need someone with a healing skill to perform the Protector role.

I really wish GoGamer had a preorder bonus.  They got a preorder bonus for Aion.
It's probably not for them not trying to get it. Atari and NCSoft work differently. NCSoft will send out the pre-sell kits to all of their distributors, who can then pass it along to any retailer, big or small. Atari apparently only sends out the pre-sell stuff (tailored to the retailer) to the big guys.

I know this because I work at a small indy store, and I can get any NCsoft stuff we need for any of their games, including the Aion pre-sell cases. I tried to get the pre-sell for Champions Online, but my distributor contact was told they couldn't get any out of Atari.

I ended up going to a local EBgames to do a $5 pre-order to get the pre-order code.

I love the Blues News headline about it (wow, talk about a delay!):

DDO Unlimited Delay  icon_razz

I don't know that DDO Unlimited, Aion and Champions Online are going after the same audience per se, but it does seem a little questionable to move the date right into that range of two brand new MMO releases (I think Aion is Sept. 22 at this point?).

They must have found something serious to cause them to postpone for an entire month, so that it will now go live between Champions Online (Sept 1) and Aion (Sept 22). Still, since I'm not playing it now, but was planning to go back on the free option, I'll just go back later. I have a few friends planning to return as well. We played casually before, and that's all we plan to do this time. My main MMO is LOTRO, and I plan to check out Champions (spent $5 for the preorder, so I'll see how it looks in open beta before committing). How much time I'll have for DDO:U is the question.

Level 20 is the last of the undefeated titles, "Undying". The earlier titles come at 5, 10, 14 and 17.

There have been scattered lag spikes lately. It's not just you. It must be something that affects all servers, since I'm on Silverlode and noticed a few last night and the day before as well. A kin-mate mentioned it as well, and he was in Moria, while I was in Breeland, so it isn't localized to a particular zone.

You'll notice a lot of quests in Breeland have been changed, and there are a few entirely new ones as well, most in the Barrow Downs.

That's strange... The Lone-Lands have always been levels 17-30+. What happened to the first 5 levels?
Since Breelands now cover up to 20 or 21, I'm guessing the Lone Lands are being redone so that Forsaken Inn will be 22 to 25-ish, and it gets higher as you head East. Right now if you do all the quests in Breelands and then go to Lone Lands, you hit green quests unless you skip Forsaken Inn entirely and just head to Ost Guruth.

The Euro servers are run by Codemasters, and they have not yet announced a f2p option. Best to stick to the US servers.

Just re-subbed to the game. Been out for AGES!! Actually can't remember the last time I played. I just started from scratch on a "suggested" server.

Anyway......I picked Human hunter. Seemed to be the most common choice for best soloing class.
Is there a good craft to go along with Hunter? I'm not a crafter in MMO's, but I do usually pick up a gathering skill to earn a bit extra that way.
Anything like that in Lotro?
The vocation you want to look at is Explorer. It gives you Forester for collecting wood and tanning hides, Prospector for collecting ore, and Tailor for crafting cloth and leather armours. Hunters wear leather, so you can make your own armour at lower levels. You can sell the wood and ore on the AH and make coin that way.

Liking the game so far. A couple of implementations are a little screwy, like regeneration abilities.

For those with an account at mmorpg. com, they are giving away 5,000 Aion North America/EU beta keys for this coming weekend right now. It's just the weekend June 5-7, but it would be enough to sample the game-play. I know I got into the teens in level with very limited play time in the Chinese beta awhile back.

I've actually tried it out. There were directions posted on mmorpg.com on how to get into the Chinese open beta this past week, and even an English text pack that makes playing it much easier, since I don't read or speak Chinese.

I only have one character to level 10, but I've seen the Asmodian starter area. Graphically gorgeous. Vibrant colors, atmospheric music. However, the quests are the standard FedEx and kill X style. It's kind of an Asian WOW, with bits of other NCsoft titles and some FFXI thrown in, like regular cut-scenes for the main quest line. It's very polished. I've seen no bugs whatsoever in my limited time so far. There is gathering and crafting, but I haven't had time to investigate that much. Class/Level-based. Standard hotbars with skills/spells, which are purchased from class trainers. Unlike WOW, and more like say, LOTRO, the skills level as you do, so you don't have to buy "fireball 2", as a fireball spell will do more damage as you level. WASD to move, although you can also click the ground as with many Asian MMOs. Gameplay-wise, there is not much new, although the ability to sprout wings and fly for limited duration in some zones is relatively original.

I have 1 day left to go before the beta ends and I'm done. It's supposed to reach North America/Europe later this year. The English text pack is excellent, definitely no hack-job babelfish translation. This bodes well for a western release if it's already this far along.

As for PvP and PVE, the starter areas are PvE only, but I've read the later zones are set up for PvP between the main 2 races, and there is a third (dragon) NPC race that is the enemy of both sides.

Apparently this is already a huge hit in Korea, and from the looks of it, will be in China as well. I heard Japan is next in the release cycle, and then North America and Europe.

It's wide open now. All you have to do is sign up on the acclaim site, then download the game, which is a little over 3GB, before it inflates up to around 8GB.

It's technically open beta, but they say there will be no wipe before official launch. I'm sticking to the level-capped f2p area until Acclaim gets their credit card option set up - no way I'm paying for their "coins".

I was in a Retriever. I'm wavering on getting a Covetor, or holding out for a Hulk, which so far is out of range of my pocketbook, at 104 mil purchase price. I could buy a Covetor today, they're only 18 mil or so. If I upgrade to Covetor, anyone who wants to take over the retriever is welcome to.

Also, seeing as how we need Nocxium for production, I've headed up into Caldari Space to mine some Pyroxeres, an ore not found in Gallente space. How much do we need to meet immediate demand?

Results of our first op, after all the ore was in one place:
55,140 Golden Omber
23,030 Silvery Omber
7854 Omber
83,520 Massive Scordite
11,320 Condensed Scordite

This refined into:
299,580 Tritanium
144,388 Pyerite
53,707 Isogen

It's all in the new corp hanger at Garoun Bank, in the Mining Division section.

The downside of the X-SENSE station is that it's base refining rate is 40% instead of 50%. I get 86% there instead of 96%. The good news is that the Garoun Bank station that is orbiting the same moon gives 50% base, so I can refine there. Alas, the Garoun station has no production facilities, or we could just move the office.

Booner found the same system I did.  icon_smile

I've been mining in the system one closer to HQ - Aidart. The only reason I've been in Aidart was a couple days ago when I scouted through Stacmon, it was sucked dry of every roid. Literally nothing was left. I ratted a bit and went back to Aidart. Looks like I just picked a bad day pass though. If it has Kernite, I'm sold, because it beats Omber by a fair degree for what it refines into.

I'd vote for an office out that way. To be cautious, lets go a week to make sure some big corp doesn't vacuum it every day but Monday.  icon_wink

By the by, my Retriever's 5 drones can handle 0.6 rats in a pinch.

I'll see if I can pop by for a while. I can fly either my retriever and mine, my badger and haul, or a cruiser/destroyer for cover if needed.
197  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [EVE] Trendy Squid roles, what do YOU want? on: March 16, 2009, 04:41:10 AM
I'm leaning to mining and industry, since that's how I was heading last time I played. I have no clue how research works, so that's pretty much out. I also don't mind mission-running now and then. (I had a blast tonight running some combat missions that got me about 3m ISK in salvage).

Although I was on a lot this weekend, I am also a regular LOTRO player and it takes part of my game time, so consider me "casual" towards EVE.

I do have a couple of questions that I didn't want to clog up the game chat channel with:

1. I have heard from several sources, and heard again during the game chat, that it is important to spend time building up "learning" skills. I'm not sure exactly which ones those are. I found the skill queue and have been training things like Refining, Science, Industry, Mining, Shield Operations, etc. Could someone explain to me what the "learning" skills are referring to?

2. Do you lose credits if your ship is destroyed by another player? I see the wallet in the space station, but I couldn't find a way to "bank" it. So, I'm wondering if you always keep your credits, even when your ship is destroyed, or if there is a way to bank credits for safekeeping, if they can be taken in pvp.

1. Learning skills are those in the "learning" skill tab. They consist of one "Learning" skill, plus the skills that boost your stats like Intelligence, Perception, Charisma, etc. Since every skill in the game is based off 2 stats, the higher your stat, the faster you learn a skill. It is a good idea to train up these when you have some time available - they don't make you better at anything, just let you train the more meaty skills faster.

2. The money you have in your wallet is basically in a bank account. You can't lose it if you ship blows up or you are podded. Tangentially, it is wise to insure your ships, since the ship is gone if it is destroyed, and you'll want to buy another. Insurance recoups most or all of the buy price of a new, un-fitted ship, depending on the level of insurance you purchase (basic, bronze, silver, gold, platinum).

I was in the closed beta last fall. I only had a couple weeks before it went to open beta and North America was locked out, but I enjoyed it a lot. Had a Void Mage up to level 13. I've been following the patch notices for the EU version. It's kinda cool to see them specifically mentioning fixes to things I remember sending in feedback or bug reports on.

I can't believe how long it took Acclaim to get their act together. Hopefully when it launches there'll be enough interest that the servers aren't deserted.
