1  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Neverwinter on: February 16, 2013, 05:15:19 PM
Played in the first beta weekend, focusing primarily on the rogue class. It is very fun. I got up to level 22 and it is a dps machine. As others have mentioned, the attacks have "weight". I played the cleric to around level 10 and while I like their healing mechanics (HoTs mostly), it felt slightly underpowered and I'm not sure I like their ranged damage implementation. I expect a cleric to wade in and smash things, rather than fling bolts of energy. I ran the fighter through the tutorial area and the first sewer instance and it seemed pretty good - more damage than the cleric and a taunt skill early. I didn't get far enough to test out their block abilities.

My biggest beef is that there is really only a thin veneer of D&D in this game from the standpoint of mechanics. DDO is much more slavish in following 3.5 rules than Neverwinter is at following 4e. The lore is there, at least. Whether it's D&D enough or not, I definitely had fun, and I'll play the beta weekends and be there at launch. Hopefully they make the mage class and the second fighter class available in the upcoming beta weekends. And I saw a post elsewhere that a data-miner found references to a ranger and a second mage class already in the files, so more classes then the first 5 should pop up relatively soon after launch.

As Tilt said, the bank and AH are one and the same, although there are now two locations, both in London - the Bank (across from the clothes store), and the Post Office (near the Tube Station/Agartha entrance). Your bank will start at 50 slots and is expandable with PAX, much like your bag space.

As for the ability to disassemble items, there are a few items at QL0 and QL1 that don't break down into components, but after that pretty much every item can be.
3  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Asheron's Call 2 revived by Turbine on: December 14, 2012, 03:53:27 PM
After a 7 year absence, Turbine has re-launched a "beta" server of Asheron's Call 2.

http://forums.ac.turbine.com/showthread.php?t=57257

The catch is ... you can log in if you are subbed to AC1, which still costs $12.95 a month. Basically a 2-for-1 deal.

The graphics hold up really well for a 10 year old game. Not TSW by any stretch, but like a low-setting DDO I'd estimate.

What they do with it remains to be seen. So far it's the game the way it was at shutdown in 2005, after the Legions expansion. At least the chat servers work this time.  icon_smile

4  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Planetside Next (Planetside 2) on: November 24, 2012, 08:36:42 PM
Playing as Vanu on Jaeger.

I've discovered I do best on foot with light assault or infiltrator. I can get some kills as a tank, but I just fumble around and end up crashing when I try to fly a fighter aircraft. I've had pretty good performance so far. I didn't play in the beta but I keep reading from testers that it is a lot better now than it was a few weeks ago.

I love the scale of a major fight. Dozens of ground troops with at least half a dozen tanks supporting and fighters and transports roaring overhead, tracer fire, explosions, an enemy aircraft taking AA fire and pinwheeling to the earth. Base approaches are rather awesome. It does get grindy once the door/chokepoint battles kick in. I usually don't partake of the suicidal rushes, I head to the periphery and settle in watching approaches for reinforcements to snipe.

Totally suck at FPS though, so my K/D ratio is rather sad - about 0.88 right now.

Definitely fun for a couple hours at a time. And the price is right.  icon_smile

What I find totally amazing is the MRO orbiter managed to take a photo of the lander with the parachute deployed, from above.

Are there buddy keys for this game so that someone who is maybe interested in checking this out might be able to try it without paying any money.  I'm very curious about this game because of the setting.

Edit: Turns out all active players have one buddy key to send. Only allows 24 hours of access, but if you want it, PM your email and I'll have it sent. It goes directly from Funcom so I need to provide them an email.

7  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [PC/360] The Secret World MMOG Announced: I'm Pumped on: July 06, 2012, 11:09:27 PM
On Arcadia with my Templar Allanna, already in a Cabal with some buddies who played Anarchy Online back in the day. I'm just entering Blue Mountain in the story chain, but I've been back in Savage Coast clearing some missions I'd missed, and tracking down lore. (Lore#8 for League of Monster Slayers took a looong time to find).

Happy to group up and run or re-run some of the missions. I have Dragon and Illuminati alts that are still only starting out Kingsmouth.

Apparently this coming weekends beta event is open to everyone.  All you have to do is sign up for beta or own a funcom game and they'll send you a key.

I made sure I still have my AoC login and confirmed it works.  If they don't send me an email then I guess it wasn't mean to be.

As someone who has pre-ordered, I've been invited to all the beta weekends. For this last one coming up, they also emailed me a buddy key. So, if you don't get one elsewhere, let me know and I'll send you the key.

I like both of the new maps. No luck getting any of the new unlocks yet. I did see a few others playing as male Quarians or Vorcha already, but not the renegade Cerberus guys.
10  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [PC/360] The Secret World MMOG Announced: I'm Pumped on: May 13, 2012, 04:28:43 PM
Really enjoying the game so far. I've progressed as far as the first weekend allows. A few NPCs left with locked quests that I guess will unlock on a later beta weekend. Lot's of people on forums reporting crashes, but I've had none. Infrequent 5-10 second video lockups are the only problem I've encountered, other than getting stuck on terrain twice that required a relog when the /stuck command didn't help. My character is using blades and elementalism so far - lot's of AoE attacks, and I move around a lot to avoid attacks. I like being able to swing and cast while moving. Even AoC required casters to stop to cast.

Right now my biggest beef is character customization is very poor. Maybe 10 hairstyles and 8 outfits per body slot. I know the devs have already jumped in to say there will be many more by launch, but I'd have thought they'd want a better first impression on this aspect. It doesn't help the vendors selling clothes show prices ranging from 30,000 to 1.5 million for pretty basic clothes. Apparently there is a typo that added a couple zeros to the prices.

Will definitely sub for this.

Go Templars!  icon_biggrin

Downloaded the beta in preparation of the first Beta weekend. I like we can at least fiddle with the settings in advance, although the launcher has decided my HD6970 has only 293MB of VRAM, instead of the 1773MB it actually has. Hope they fix that.

Once I've got a weekend or two out of the beta, I'll decide if I go for the Lifetime sub. I did that for LOTRO and I'm willing to do it again, since I like to take things slowly and I imagine there are a lot of long-range plans for this game, given Ragnar is at the helm.

I'm all for working together, but other than Fooze and me, nobody I play with much ever talks on their mic at all (or simply don't have one). I do wish at the least the co-op game had some simple chat or voice macro lines (maybe assigned to the Function keys or something) to do some basic communications, to allow that many players either don't have a headset or don't wanna talk. I'm not trying to turn it into ME3: Rainbow Six SWAT Ghost Recon, I just think it would make teamwork a bit more possible.  icon_smile

I have a microphone that I've tried to use, but it became swiftly apparent no one could hear me. I need to fiddle with the settings obviously.

Opened one more Spectre pack last night and got... Krogan Vanguard. meh. I almost never play Vanguard. I was hoping for the Asari Justicar.

13  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Mass Effect 3 co-op (PC) on: April 11, 2012, 11:50:15 PM
I really like the Hydra map. I had a field day with the Valiant Sniper Rifle. Some nice lines of fire there.

Opened 6 Spectre packs so far and all I got of the new stuff was the Geth SMG, which I haven't tried but I hear is as useless as most of the other SMGs. I did however get an N7 weapon I didn't have before - the M99 Saber. Quite the punch on that one. I've even come around on the Crusader N7 shotgun. It weighs a lot but if you mod it for damage it goes off the chart, and it's also very accurate, more if you add a mod. Too bad there are no scopes for shotguns.  icon_twisted

I see that playing this weekend will unlock a pack with a guaranteed new class from the DLC.

That Batarian melee damage is awesome. I'm sure I saw him punch out at least one phantom on silver. I had a few minutes in spectator mode once that second phantom got the fatality move on me.

They've called it both, causing confusion. There is a graphic on this page that shows Krogan Vanguard is the same as the Battlemaster.

It's basically one new race for each of the 6 classes.

Looking forward to the new classes and maps. I figured we'd see playable Geth at some point, but Batarians? What's next - Volus? You just know the Krogan Battlemaster will be a rare. Time to start saving up credits now.

The only map of the 6 we have now that I don't like is Reactor. Two new ones are very welcome.

Last weekend I couldn't get enough Medigel. This weekend, I have 32 Medigel, and no Survival Packs, and I have over 100 spare clips. I do use those clips whenever I run a mission with my Krogan Sentinel who carries the Geth Plasma Shotgun. That thing eats clips.

Already promoted 2 guys, and figure I'll promote 2 or 3 more today. Almost every race/class option is unlocked for me now except Salarian Infiltrator and one other, A Drell I think.

Still having a lot of fun, although yesterday a lot of PUGs were marred by leaders leaving mid-mission, or bailing from the lobby if they didn't like the look of the assembled team.

Finally unlocked Asari Adept, but still waiting on a Quarian Engineer. I do think they need to re-evaluate the ratio of getting spare thermal clips to medi-gel in the boosters. I'm always out, or hoarding the last medi-gel, while I have 64 spare clips and counting.

Asari Adept is an awesome class especially when you evolve your Stasis with the bubble.  So much control and it helps a ton against gold level Cerberus (especially those pesky yet deadly Phantoms).  I wouldn't hold your breath too much for the Quarian Engineer.  The Sentry Turret is definitely lacking. frown  However, the Salarian Engineer's Decoy is pretty good.

Yeah, I do tend to get more thermal clips as well, but when you use a weapon like the Geth Plasma Shotgun, you'll be glad that you have lots of spare clips.  I burn through ammo like no one's business with that gun and most of the time it is when I am surrounded by enemies and not conveniently next to an ammo box.

I played Quarian Engineer in the beta when it was a breeze to get, and I had fun. I like the turret. The tier 6 upgrade makes it actually do some real damage. I've used spare clips before, on a low-capacity shotgun or sniper rifle. I've had bad luck with the boosters where I need more medigel and I get 3 more thermal clips instead. Time. After. Time.

I was surprised to open a spectre pack just now and get a max limit upgrade for the Ops Survival Pack - I can now carry 3 per mission.

Yeah, I love the stasis bubble. But oh how I wish you could bubble a Geth Pyro...

I kept missing the invites I was sent on Saturday night. I logged out and saw a couple that were sent hours prior. I must be not seeing them while in the middle of a mission.

Got the N7 shotgun with high accuracy but weighs a ton. Swell.

Tried the premium pack and got 2 uncommon weapons, one an assault rifle I didn't have yet, the other an upgrade. The one and only spectre pack I picked up so far gave me the Widow sniper rifle.

PUGs i joined tonight all seemed to be people with N7 ratings between 100 and 250m sporting super rare weapons. I sense I am falling behind.

Oh and way to reuse otherwise great themes like making Saren commit suicide, but with the Illusive Man. That never seemed like the IM's way of doing things, it would have been way more awesome if he had at least gone down fighting in a different way. They also never made IM sympathetic in previous games.

As others have posted, the rest of the game was great, amazing in fact.

I couldn't select the final dialogue option for TIM, so I shot him instead. Far more satisfying in my opinion.

Chose the "red" Destroy all Reapers/synthetics option, which was the only option I even considered. Stay on mission. I imagine, as Shepard squared her shoulders, and lost the limp in those final few steps as she emptied her pistol into the device, she may have said a final "I'm sorry, EDI".

I knew going into the last run at the beam that things were grim. Every squad member I talked to once in London seemed resigned to failure. Kaidan pretty much says we're all dead. Garrus takes a crack at some bravado but you know he knows the odds are stacked the wrong way. Even EDI with her 'a slim chance is better than none'  line is admitting reality is about to catch up. So, I wasn't all that crushed by the ending, except - I would have liked get a more coherent epilogue on who survived and where, and how.

Before the ending I'd rate the game 9.5 out of 10, due to a few buggy side missions and the mission waypoints not always updating on the maps. Everything else was just about perfect - the writing, the music, the visuals. If Bioware somehow releases a revised ending that fixes the last 5 minutes, the 9.5 will stand. As it is now, I'd knock a point or two off.

Now to start over with an engineer this time instead of an adept.

I almost never play multiplayer in shooter-type games, but I was intrigued, so I gave this one a whirl. It's an absolute blast. Got a little lucky with my booster packs and scored a Quarian Engineer and a Salarian Infiltrator to go with the various humans. No Krogan, Asari  or Turian yet though.

I must have played 20 matches yesterday and aside from one disconnect during a match (on wave 10, Noooo!), and one that bugged early when I used Throw on a guy off a ledge that the game seemed to lose track of, resulting in a wave never completing so we had to bail,  it's been very stable. I'm of mixed feelings about the booster pack method of getting upgrades and unlocks, since, to read some of the posts in the forums and on FB, people played all day and never unlocked another race, while just getting more medigel and mods for weapons they never use. I've had better results, but their RNG may need some work.

Looking forward to more maps in the retail version, and more enemies than just Cerberus.

The other nifty thing about SWTOR 4-mans is if you're missing a 4th you can sometimes get by with a companion.

I was in a 4-man Esseles Flashpoint last night and a Jedi Shadow went linkdead. We finished up using the Trooper's companion, just fine. Not sure if that would work for the higher level ones, but at level 10/11, they are viable.

Something I forgot to do on my own trooper was upgrade the first companion's big gun. There were quest rewards replacing his armor, but not the gun. Around level 18 I noticed, and crafted up a better gun.  Doubled his dps.

Also on Antonia Bayle server.

I need to assess what's still locked for my level 68 Warden. I know I'll have locked bags and bank space as a Silver.

For the potential Fury upthread, they are similar to Warden, which I've played, as the two classes that rely mostly on HoTs for healing. Furys have more damaging spells as I recall, but it's been a 3+ years since I played last so who knows if anything's changed. Good survivability against anything except mobs with huge spike damage.

SOE backed down on forcing returning players with default Silver accounts to pay to unlock their old characters if they were not part of the free race/class combos. All characters created prior to December 6th will be grandfathered to unlocked status.

Parts of the game mechanics are well hidden. I noticed the game giving me a Rested state whenever sleeping, just like in older games. I could find nowhere that described the effect however. I also got a bit confused when people I met occasionally started to say things like "Are you feeling all right? You don't look well." when the game hadn't informed me of any kind of disease. Digging deeper, I eventually discovered that all this information is hidden in the Magic section, of all places. Go to the Active Effects tab there, and you'll see everything that's currently afflicting you, including bonuses like Rested and diseases. Going through this section I realized I had gotten a disease called Rockjoint, most likely after being bitten by a wolf. Getting rid of it was easy enough by wandering into a nearby pawn shop and buying their last Cure Disease potion, but it would be nice if the game showed these things more clearly. Why did they hide this stuff in the Magic section anyway?

I found that just last night as well...my guess was that it was a UI design decision, albeit one that should have been better documented.  Instead of seeing buff icons that "take you out of the game", you are dependent on visual clues and dialog from NPCs.  For the roleplayer in me I love it, for the practical gamer I hate it.

Indeed, I had an npc tell me I didn't look well, and sure enough, when I was checking the Active Effects, I had Ataxia, which was lowering my lockpicking/pickpocket by 25%. Bought a cure disease potion and fixed that. Later I noticed the 10% bonus to skill gain for being well-rested.

Now, back to Skyrim!

Those are some of my favorite books - Although, if you like Gratch comments, cant take it when people behave very very badly, don't read them. The main characters are one and all capable of the most henious acts...kinda like real human beings.
Yeah, there are almost no straight-up "good" characters in the Thomas Covenant series. I liked the middle trilogy less than the first trilogy. The final books, "Last Chronicles", after such a long hiatus, I've really enjoyed so far.

For sci-fi, one of my favorites is the Chanur Saga by C.J. Cherryh.

Many of the recommendations I'd make are already mentioned, so I'll second Sage of the Pliocene Exiles by Julian May, and for a much lighter read, The Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison.

My main concern is with all the permutations of squad-mates they have to factor in. As we can see a couple posts up, not only is Liara back, so is Garrus - who can die in ME2. Then we have the Kaiden/Ashley situation with one or the other unavailable depending on a choice in ME1. Plus, I watched footage from PAX where other ME1/ME2 squad-mates played a role in a mission, and both of them might also be dead depending on earlier actions. There must be a LOT of dialogue to record to cover all the possibilities.

I'm glad I have a run-through of ME2 where everyone survived.

Do you have the different teams memorized from the last battle? In my first play through I lost a couple of
characters I would have loved to carry forward into 3.

Probably my favorite single player game of all time. I loved everything about 2. Im playing it through again bit sometimes I just fire it up and play it more like a sand box game rather than a story driven one.
My most anticipated single player game bar none
Spoiler for Hiden:
To get everyone through the Collector Base alive, have most or all of the squad loyal. Only chose loyal people for special missions:
Ventilation ducts: Tali  (Legion and Kazumi also work)
First team Leader: Miranda (or Garrus or Jacob)
Biotic Sphere: Samara (or Jack or Morinth)
Second Team Leader: Miranda (or Garrus or Jacob)
Escort Normady crew: I used Jacob, but the consensus is to have a loyal Mordin do escort duty
Final battle: any 2 loyal squad-mates. I had Miranda and Legion with Shepard for the final encounter
Make sure you have a few tough squad-mates left to "Hold the Line", or weaker people like Tali and Mordin can die there, off camera. I had it stacked with Grunt, Garrus and Zaeed and everyone lived.

I will be fighting the Secret War as a Templar.  ninja
Where's the secret part? Is this true? Is this to throw us off the truth? Did you know we would know it's to throw us off and it's really for real? Are you really just skipping the secret war and playing Knights of the Old Republic?
This secret war stuff is confusing....

Anyway, if possible, I'll play the Secret War as.... The Beyonder! I win!
Everything is True.

And clearly, I can not chose the goblet next to you...
