1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Digital projection or film? on: May 30, 2005, 01:59:03 PM
So, I have the option to see Star Wars Ep. III as a film projection or a DLP projection.  Is the digital projection going to look pixelated?  Better?  Worse?  The theater in question is Loews Boston Common theater.  Which should I see?

3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / System Discussion: Playstation 3 on: May 16, 2005, 09:42:42 PM
So, make up some funny new names, then. Here's my shot:

Hoping for more sales to evangelicals, they go with the:
Sony Praystation

To emphasize the supercomputer nature of the Cell, they go with:
Sony Craystation

Actually, the Playstation brand is so well known that I cannot imagine they would abandon it.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's May 12 - finally! XBox/ MTV reminder! on: May 12, 2005, 10:31:09 PM
Quote from: "Rob_Merritt"

Links that work. (now if we only had it in english...)

I can read it... it's in Danish.  There's not much there that hasn't already been translated here other than a mention that the capacity of the system is so huge that it will take developers a long time to learn how to use all of the power it possesses.  It's also part of the reason that there won't be many games in the beginning.  If I see anything else that I don't see here, I'll post it.

Says that XBox live is fully integrated in the machine and whether you choose to go online, you have a 'gamer card' that stores all of your personal informationn -- the same 'gamer card' that will enable you to play online.

more edit:
There are two versions of XBox Live.  'Silver,' which allows you to download demos and new game content as well as videochat for free.  Then there is the 'Gold,' which is a subscription service, that allows you to play your games online in the manner that you are currently used to.

even more:
There's an included camera that allows for videochat... that's 'big news' according to this article.  Microsoft supposed that 50% of the people that purchase the XBox will go online through XBox live, and that at any given point in time, 8% of XBox owners will be online.

They also point out that the machine is a fully integrated part of watching tv.  If you watch DVDs through it, and you have your setting correct, then you will still receive invitations to play games while you are watching your movie, and you'll still get email from gaming friends.  You're also able to stream your digital photos over the connection to a friend that you're chatting with, and play for them your favorite songs from your iPod.

The button in the middle, when pressed, will take you directly to the 'dashboard.'  At any point in time, you can press the button and it will immediately pause your game and take you to the Live dashboard.  Pressing it again returns you to your game, all without having to wait.

There are no visible screws on the entire machine and the front plate can be changed to other styles, based on your mood...

The white and black buttons are still on the controller, but they've moved up to where the triggers are and function like two more triggers.

Ack!   frown

I'm a nervous wreck this weekend, for no reason.  My mind keeps pursuing things to illogical bad conclusions and I can't get it to stop!  It's probably due to the stress of finals at school, but it's driving me out of my mind!

Anybody else suffer from anxiety and want to share some ways of quelling it?  I don't normally have problems, so I'm not sure what the best way to trick my mind out of it is.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Newbie Guild Wars/Online Multi play question on: May 07, 2005, 06:30:55 PM
There is direction.  Basically, there are other human players in the cities.  If you form a group with them, then they accompany you into the same 'instance' of the world.  And the world is gigantic.  Even the newbie area is huge and you could easily spend 10+ enjoyable hours trying to complete all of the quests there.

There is an overarching 'story' quest and there are side quests.  The 'story' progresses as you complete those quests and move to different parts of the world.  If you want to wander the entire world by yourself, in your own 'instance,' then you're free to do so.  If you want to wander it with a guild or group, then that option is available, too.  If you have to travel a far distance and don't feel like walking the entire way, you can automatically travel between cities that you've previously visited.

The application is stable, the graphics are awesome (even on lower-end systems), the gameplay is fun, and the price is right, considering the amount of game that's there and the fact that there is no monthly fee.  Some complain a bit about the linearity of the characters, but frankly, I don't notice.  I'm not a super hardcore RPG player, and there's plenty of variety for me. suggests that there are over 150 skills for each character class, and you can dual class -- though you can only have 8 skills available for use at a time.  That adds some strategy in deciding how to equip your character (skill-wise) before you leave the city.

It's fun!  I think that OO has a guild that you could probably get into.

17  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I'm going to Thailand to do tsunami relief work for 2 months on: April 28, 2005, 05:18:03 PM
Hey everybody!  Some of you may know me from my near-lurking status around here.  I post sometimes, but truth be told, I've had little time for gaming, as a grad student.

A fellow student, Alexis, and I are going to Khao Lak, Thailand for two months, do do tsunami rehabilitation and relief work.  While it fills a requirement for our degree, we're both really excited that we have the opportunity to help.  Anyhow, it's only partially funded through the school.  Therefore, we're trying to raise money to help support the trip.  Part of that effort is run through a website that we just set up:

We're trying to be as transparent as possible about the trip.  While initial funds will go to cover our travel and living expenses for those two months, any amount above what we have budgeted will go directly, in its entirety, to the tsunami relief center in Khao Lak.  Of course, our time is worth $, too, so any support given to us is, in essence, given to the community.  Any 'corporate' sponsorship will put your logo on the web page.

I certainly don't expect anybody to donate.  However, take a look at the site.  If you can chip in, that would be great.  If you can't, and you're interested in following along with out trip, then sign up for the email listserv, though which we'll keep in touch.  It should be a really fun and exciting time!  Thanks!

If you want to go fishing, ditch the kids, get a fly rod, stay at the Roosevelt lodge, and then hike into the 3rd meadow on Slough Creek.  You'll catch more brook trout than you can shake a stick at, and you'll be all alone.  You'll probably also see lots of cool animals.  It's about a 7 mile hike in, I think.

2) Cousins.  If my cousin gets married and has kids, is the spouse considered my cousin now?  Is there a cousin-in-law title?  What about their kids?  Are they now my cousins?

If it's your 1st cousin that got married, then the kids are you 1st cousins once-removed.   Your kids will be your cousin's kids' second cousins.
27  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Overcoming Jealousy.. on: April 11, 2005, 11:41:18 PM
There are a few things you can do.  First, just come right out and say something to her like, "When I date somebody, I am with that person exclusively.  I won't cheat on you, that I promise.  I hope that you can promise me the same in return."  If not, then you know.  If she does, then you know that she'll at least have that promise in mind if she ever considers being with somebody else.

Secondly, it's a good lesson in self-control to force yourself to trust her from the start.  While she might not live up to it, at least you were a good enough person to give her the chance.  Any sort of relationship based on suspiscion is doomed to fail unless that suspiscion is overcome quickly.

31  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / epididymal cyst on: March 17, 2005, 02:01:41 AM
Hell, man, I had epididymitis in college, which causes the epididymitis to put pressure on the testicle.  I felt like I was getting kicked in the balls every 1.5 seconds for about a week.  It was awful.

No, you're not the only one wondering why a girl had an epididymal cyst on her head.

You know, when I worked as a surgical tech we had this kid come in to have an orchipexy (sp?), which helps the testicle descend.  When we pulled it down, lo and behold, there were two, giving the boy 1+2=3 testicles.  Whee!

38  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / There oughta be a test on: December 27, 2004, 07:38:45 PM
First of all, I find the notion of denying people the right to have children offensive.  Secondly, being wealthy does not make you a good parent.  Neither being impoverished nor being uneducated makes you a bad parent.  There are plenty of wealthy and highly educated people who are shit for parents.

Fertility rates tend to be high where child mortality rates are high.  They are also higher in agrarian, rural, impoverished communities, where children are needed to work the family farm for sustenance.  As developing countries becomes more urbanized, fewer people have children, since raising a child in the city is more expensive than in a rural area.

Family planning is certainly an unmet need in a lot of developing countries.  However, there is debate between the "contraceptive is the best contraceptive" and "economic development is the best contraceptive" communities, with studies showing that both may be true, under different circumstances.  Either way, it is important to consider desired fertility rates and the same time that you consider total fertility rates.

However, history has shown time and time again that as societies reduce infant mortality rates, fertility rates decline.  The lag period in between the reduction in mortality rates and fertility rates is called the demographic transition, and is associated with a large baby boom, followed by a period of economic development known as the "demographic dividend."  I highly suggest that you read this article (.pdf) if you're interested.
