How long is this good for? If I don't get college hoops for Christmas I might pick it up.

Not playing until Christmas.  That's when my wife gets it as a present... and then I get to play it as well smile

Question - my 32" lcd is 1366 x 768-pixels.  I think I have it set to 720p for games already.  This is the resolution I should use for hd-dvd movies too on that size, correct (as opposed to 1080i)?

I have MK3 now, so it should be up and running.  Personally I might be slightly annoyed, but I don't really care if a game isn't up for a day for some reason.  I'm still just glad I can download it.
1807  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: $60 Games Costing Sales? on: October 21, 2006, 10:24:35 PM
I have gotten a couple games at full-price on 360, but that is only if I REALLY want it or I get it as a gift (my relatives aren't very good about using the internet to find deals...)

That said, I would have bought twice as many games and not looked to trades/ebay as much if the starting price was $39.99 or $44.99 rather than $59.99. Same deal for PC games, I certainly never buy one for $49.99 and generally try to buy at $39.99 or less.

Cassidy was tough, but Jesper is my nemises.  I'm playing him in the second round of the first tournament in hard and am pissed off.  I've played four times now without winning, but on the second match I lost 11-9 in the third game.  I was screaming with every blown point towards the end... my wife had to come up from the basement to see if I was ok :-p.

I've worked my way through medium, but I need a break before trying the hard tournament again... definitely having fun with it, but I'm worried how hard it might be to unlock the rest of the characters and arenas.  I need to find a good list of what you need to do.

1820  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / looking for new computer, suggestions welcome on: February 14, 2006, 12:40:21 AM
yeah, I used gotapex to get a couple hundred off.  if I didn't get the discout I doubt I would have used Dell.  The bad reviews were at reselleratings (or whatever it is called).  Some people had no problems, others had a lot.  Dell had some bad reviews but it was mostly just because people needed tech support (not actual problems in shipping, etc). In any case I'll keep an eye on Cyberpower for next time (when I need a cpu instead of my wife), but this time I thought I'd stick with the Dell.

For my last computer I got a Talon line from Falcon-NW before they switched to customizable Talons... then the cost increased by a lot for them.
1821  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / looking for new computer, suggestions welcome on: February 11, 2006, 09:56:14 PM
Well, after spending a few hours playing around on different sites I bit the bullet and bought a Dell.  I figure I shouldn't need that much tech support anyways. Not great, but cheaper in any case.

Bought Dell dimension E310
XP Media center 2005 edition
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB)
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz -2DIMMs
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 48x CD-RW Drive
17 inch Ultrasharp™ 1707FP Digital Flat Panel
plus office basic, wireless adaptor, keyboard, mouse, etc
1 year warranty
15 months of Mcafee everything

Minuses - no real graphics card yet (will probably buy one soon from newegg)
Integreated sound, but the Audigy one, so at least it is serviceable

With tax/shipping it was about $1100

EDIT - Ok, turns out I was dumb, that model isn't really expandable, so I bumped it up to a XPS 400 and added the graphics card, sound card, etc plus it is dual core.

Arg, something decent from ABS still comes out fairly expensive.  Can get just what I want from Cyberpower, but all of the bad user reviews online scare me...
1823  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / looking for new computer, suggestions welcome on: February 11, 2006, 03:45:42 PM
Oh, sorry, it is a desktop, not a laptop.  It'll probably be supposed to last a while, and be used for some games, but probably not top-tier graphic hogs. I am willing to upgrade some individual parts later on in a year or two.
1824  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / looking for new computer, suggestions welcome on: February 11, 2006, 03:00:12 PM
Hey, I'm looking for a new computer for my wife (she's currently using a P2 400 laptop...). Not looking for anything high-end, but I want the sort of minimal decent system specs (1GB ram, 80-160 GB HD, a decent $200 or so graphics card, etc).  Also need monitor, etc.

I haven't bought a system in a while... what are the best online places to buy customized systems (looking cheaper than alienware, falcon, etc).

Also, with things like Dell E310, I can configure a decent one fairly cheap but it doesn't seem to have a graphics card and doesn't like the power supply.  Are these sorts of systems easily upgradable, or do I need to start with a higher system?

Thanks guys.  Oh, and while I don't mind replacing ram or graphics card I'd rather not build it.

Haven't played with it too much as I got the system yesterday, but I have a question.  I think my 32" lcd tv is in between 720 and 1080 resolution.  Will the 1080 still look better and should I use that (that's what I'm doing currently).

1829  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's the latest rumor fodder on XB 360 releases? on: December 31, 2005, 12:56:42 AM
Hehe, I'm in that situation.  I have 2 XBOX 360 games, plus a couple XBOX games that I can't play since I don't have a system yet... My birthday is right near christmas so I got a lot of stuff.  I'm #13 on the list at my local ebgames, and it sounds like it'll be about 3 weeks or so for me.  Unless I manage to find one elsewhere first... I was going to camp out for the second best buy release, but I got there at 11:15 pm and there were already 53 people waiting... and that best buy was only getting like 45 systems!

1833  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Jon Stewart rips into CNN's Crossfire...on Crossfire on: October 17, 2004, 10:12:04 PM
Well, I would argue that for the amount that Stewart attacks others for tossing softball questions at times, he could indeed throw a few harder ones.  He tries on occasion, but since he is going for a feel-good vibe it usually doesn't go very far.  I realize of course that it's not really his role to do that, but I could still hope sometimes.  I think he does do a better job than much of the media even when asking silly questions though, and at least even though he is semi-partisan he does mock both sides when apprpriate.  I agree with Jon's basic point, and I felt the reference to spin alley was very good.  And yes, the guy with a bow tie is a dick.

(P.S.  Jon Stewart was my graduation speaker in the spring (he's an alum from William and Mary), so boo-yah.  Here's the address)

1837  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Argh. on: October 16, 2004, 02:16:59 AM
(I am Tim Frederick btw) Well, I must say I am sad to learn what (might) have happened to GoneGold.  I have been very confused and sad the past couple weeks about it, and thankfully someone from a GG fantasy football league pointed me here.

Well, I have been going to gonegold since at least 2000, and posting actively for the past few years.  I remember reading the roll calls every night, and even copying a couple of the more touching ones regarding Rich's past in the NYPD, or more uplifting stories of his gaming extravaganzas and his excitement with new releases or running contests, etc.  I can't believe that it is over.

Even after Rich became too sick to contribute, Bill swooped in with his stories of Eli 2.0 and his story contests.  When everyone was worried about the costs of running gonegold we donated money to the cause, only to find out that we had managed to buy enough games through gogamer and such, and clicked enough links that the site was actually economically viable on its own.  Bill, Andy, and the mods did a wonderful job keeping it running during this whole time period.

The past year has been a rough one at GG, with people getting booted off, the large mod turnover, and fights over the direction of gonegold.  I know Rich had been disappointed with that, but things had gotten a lot better since then.  That is what is so dissapointing about this, it seems like while we had a rough time, the past few months have been flawless with less fighting (thanks to the quarantine of R&P, hehe) and with the site becoming more of a community again.

How am I to know what to get without the gonegold effect?  Never again will I have the silliness of roll call or night call?  Sigh...  I will try to visit CG some, but it simply is not going to feel the same for me.  The past couple years I started visiting more often, as where I inititally only came to discuss games, I moved into political discussions, everything but gaming, trading games, etc.  It was nice to have a site where people happily donated time to help with someone's math homework, or helped with personal problems, relationships, job searches, etc.  Even people who would fight in some forums would drop everything to answer a post asking for help in life.

In gonegold we have witnessed weddings, the birth of one another's children, MsDuncan's wife, deaths, GGers on TV, getting post-graduate degrees, and almost anything else you can imagine.  Where else will so many programmers and designers from the industry occasionally come to argue and pimp their games for us?  I never thought a website would have given me so many memories and experiences.

So Rich, Andy, Bill, Stephen, and the mods, thanks for everything these past couple years.  I hope somehow GG will come back, but if not, we really did appreciate you all these years.  If there is anything we can do, let us know.
