2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2:What tactic did you take when... on: August 29, 2005, 05:10:11 PM
I set up my 3 guns in a half circle around a prison cell.  There is a specific one where 3 guns gives you coverage on the 3 avenues of approach.  Keep them close enough to the door that you can reach out and grab them, but not so close that any bullets or nades thrown at the guns will effect you.  its a thin line to walk and it took me 3 tries, but it seemed to work better than any other way i tried.

I'm pretty sure you'd be "quite pissy" if you busted your ass and didn't get a tip.

I could care less if you tip or not.  It's your money.  Just don't be surprised when people think you're cheap.

How in the hell did we end up here?

As i said before i worked not one but three jobs as waitstaff.  Despite the fact that i was really good at my job and made quite a bit in tips, i never once expected a tip nor did i get pissy when i was not given one.  IA tip is not required its a thank you for a job well done.  if you are getting pissy because you did not get a tip, then you have a problem because you expect something that you never had the right to expect.  Expecting a tip is in my opinion quite greedy, and diminishes what a tip is supposed to be.

As for the whole spit in the food thing, i highly doubt it.  i generaly leave tiping to people like you guys, and never eat out alone.  I doubt ive ever been fingered as a person who refuses to tip.  Why would i do it when all the other suckers i eat out with are more than willing to part with their money.  I do something else like buy em a beer or something that actualy returns a product for the money i spent.

When you don't tip the only obligation the employer has is to ensure that waiter made minimum wage for their services.   And that's all most employers will do.

I call you cheap because your protest makes zero sense- the owner of the establishment you ate at still profits from your patronage and gets zero feedback about his pay practices and therefore has no incentive to change.  Meanwhile, the waiter is the one hurt.

Let me ask you this, do you inform the waiter/waitress at the beginning of the meal that you don't believe in tipping as a concept and therefore will not be leaving a tip out of protest?  If you don't then the only conclusion the waitstaff will draw when you leave without tipping is that either you are cheap or the service was substandard.  Since you yourself admitted that you wont' even tip for standard service that leaves one conclusion:  you're cheap.  If that bothers you then let me rephrase:  I think you're cheap.

I fail to see how the first part is my problem.  Where does it stop?  Should you tip me when i fix your computer?  Should you tip the garbage man?  What about your teacher?  how is it we decide who deserves a tip and who does not?  All of the above are in service.  All of the above is pretty instrumental to society in general.  Why not tip those people?  If the answer is that they make set wages, then you have made my point for me because wait staff should not be the exception they should be like the rest of the service industry.  i think a person should know exactaly how much they are going to make before they do a job and it is one of the reasons i dont wait tables anymore despite the fact that it was sometimes very good money.

Ill ask you one more time to quite making personal attacks, my personality here is not the topic.  Furthermore if you knew me at all, and you dont, you would know im not cheap.  Last time, quit with the personal attacks.

Lastly no i dont inform the waitstaff they will get no tip.  first of all i dont really like spit in my food and as we can see by the quite rude replies around here that is a good idea on my part.  Second no i dont inform them because im only required to inform some one if i am going to NOT do something that is required.  i remind you again the tip is optional.  Any wait staff that expects a tip from every customer is setting them selves up for failure.  Lastly informing them they will get no tip at the start of the meal would be an untruth.  As i have said before i tip for people that go above and beyond.

That is a different topic all together.  If you would like to have a living wage debate that would be a topic for another thread and one i would be happy to post in.  Otherwise this thread is about tips.  I should point out however that, getting rid of tips does not mean all wait staff will get nothing but min wage.  Thats a bit fatalistic and the job market its self serves as evidence that this would not likley happen.  After all most jobs that could pay min wage dont.

I dont think this is true. if people where to choose not to tip at all then the boss would have to pay his staff. thats the right thing to do. Furthermore i must remind you and the oerly rabid guy above you that tips are optional.

No, the boss doesn't have to pay the staff.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but in most states owners are legally allowed to pay their stuff under minimum wage (the rate was $2.13/hr when I was waiting) if a substantial portion of the waiter's income is expected to come from tips.

"Right thing to do" has nothing to do with it.

The owner isn't being hurt, only the waitstaff.

You don't feel like tipping because you're cheap not because you are engaging in some sort of noble protest.

EDIT- To clarify the minimum wage comment- owners *are* required to make up the balance if the waiter's total earnings average out under what they would have received in minimum wage.  Which is fine I suppose if you think waiters should only be paid minimum wage.  I don't.

agreed to the first point, since the whole point of the statment you quoted was that we should not tip.

Right thing has everything to do with it becuase if we did not prop up their unethical loophole they would have to pay at least min wage.  This is illustrated by your own statement that the boss must make up wages if they fall under min wage.  Im not sure what the point there was, but it seems to me that your statments back up my point.

Lastly its very rude to call a person you dont know cheap.  You have never met me, and you dont know the first thing about me.  you are basicly talking straight out of your ass.  I dont tip because i think the practice is wrong for the reasons i have already put forth.  Untill you have some sort of evidence to the contrary id suggest you quit making shit up.    Its fine to have an opinion different that mine.  however it is not cool to attack me personaly because you disagree.

Everytime you go into a restruant and have a meal, and don't tip for it, you are screwing the wait staff. Why? Because the "boss" still gets his cash, so he's not feeling pressure to change anything, the only person "screwed" is the guy or gal making $3.20 an hour. If that person quits, they are quickly replaced.

Exactly- by partronising that establishment you are supporting the boss who is screwing the wait staff.

Don't like the system? Then don't eat out.

I was not refering to a meal at all.  i was refering to tips for people like cabbies or the guy at the salon.  I think tipping some one who is making full wages is even more silly unless they went above and beyond.

Other than that you are of course entitled to your opinion, but i think ill have to decline your offer to stay the fuck home.  In steed i think ill go the fuck out, and eat out like i would any other day.

for the most part i do not tip.  That is not to say i will never leave a buck on the table, but i only do it for those that go above and beyond.  In my opinion if you provide serive that is not noteworthy then you get your base wage and nothing more.

I find it amazing that people tip average and even bad wait staff.  A tip is a way to say thank you for doing a great job.  Its not something that is required.  lots of people think it is and that diminishes what a tip is supposed to be, a required thank you is not a thank you at all its a surcharge.  As far as tipping anyone who is not wait staff, i think that is just a short hop away from ludicrous.  why in gods name would you feel the need to say thank you for a service you where made to pay full price for.  That i will never understand.

I don't know who convinced America to not only allow the owners of a restaurant to pay their employees substandard wages, but also that we should supplement the difference.  Who ever he was he was a smart cookie, and i bet he died rich.  I for one refuse to be a part of it, i will not enable the boss and help him screw his wait staff, nor will I, someone with enough financial problems, be responsible for someone's(bad?) choice of jobs.  all in all i think its a big scam.

For me it was not the monkey guy it was a combination of that damn elephant demon and that guy with the 2 swords.  Man i hated that dude, he tore me to pieces on more than one occasion.  I dont think the monkey guy ever hit me.  I tagged him as the weakest (guess i was wrong) and i used my focus on him and the mage.  i just jumped behind went slowmo and kicked the shit out of both of em, before thier help could get to me.  Of course i was then out of focus so i had to avoid 2 swords guy while i alternatly knocked the elephant around and drained the sword wielder for chi.

Did you ever try out white demon with paralyzing palm?  For it to be an effective combo you have too up the speed on demon and up the duration of palm.  Once you get it right, its almost unfair.

Btw, if you thought the combat was too easy, wait until you get to the imperial city and fight through all of the arena matches.  Single human foes are not too tough, but wait until the final matches

Any tips for fighting demons in general?  Magic and support styles don't normally work against them, the A+X martial style doesn't work against some of them, leaving only martial and weapon styles.

Any tips for fighting golems?  The ones I've fought are immune to martial attacks, magic, and most status effects from support styles.  Once I run out of focus fighting golems, the only way I've been able to kill them is by using spirit thief in chi mode, which takes forever.

Demons and golems are what makse you work on your focus and pool and the chi costs for weapons.  The good thing about demons is they tend to be big and because of this they generaly only appear in large combat areas.  This is where i pull out my baby mirrabelle and introduce the spawn of hell to a little thing i like to call gun powder.  After all its not like you wanna be close to those nasties anyway.  Same thing goes for goelms pretty much.  use your weapons. and stay away from em.  those golem attacks are nasty.   Generaly tho its very hard to give tips on how to fight them, because different types of golems and demons do different things.  Im sure based on your arena comment you already know the difference between and elephant demon and a toad demon.

That arena comment was aimed at the last qualifier for the championchip fight right?  That was one hard ass fight.  i actualy had to do that one 3 times before i won.

By the way just for comparisons sake, i like the conversations, the story, and the conversation options.  I thought the baker bei quest was very light hearted and funny in the face of such a grave main quest.  I appreciated it for the small funny distraction i thought it was ment to be.  I say this only so that this style of gameplay is not counted as a mistake, for people like me, this is exactaly what we want.

I mentioned in another forum that my favorite thing so far with JE is I look forward to what Obsidian could do with the sequel (Provided they had time to complete the final product this time).  I found the Baker Bei sidequest in the second town to be particularly disappointing, in an "ohh, come ON!" sort of way.

However, it really picked up at that point, and the Dam/Forest/Pirate Island quest trifecta in chapter 2 really had some great moments - cinematic, combat, pacing and narrative.

It has bogged down a bit now that I have entered the 3rd chapter, but I'm hoping it will pick up as it did before.

I can't remember his name in the game too, but I'm 90% sure he was voiced by John Cleese.  He sure was a tough fight though... man he loads that rifle fast!

s

Atta:  thanks for the tip on the martial styles, I'll have to try that.  I use tiger style, and exactly how you described with paralyzing palm, I have to move forward to close the distance after the PP combo.  Something I thought was curious is that Tiger Style if bought from a merchant is significantly more expensive than either Thousand Cuts or Legendary Strike (10,000 compared to 6000 and 7500 I think).  Not sure if price equals value in this case, but I thought that was interesting.  You mentioned you just picked up White Demon, have you found a use for that style?  It didn't really fit with my play style, but it seems strong.
Ohhh it fits, it fits like a glove on your paralyzing palm.

As for price, White demon was painful for me, i wanna way it was 14 k, but im not sure.  It is worth noting that it was the last of the martial styles so that may have something to do with it.  My guess is they ramp up in price based on how many you already have.

Roguetad:

I think there is good reason to buy them, but it may not apply to every one.  The first style i took was leaping Tiger.  This style rocks because its pretty fast, and its pretty powerful.  The middle of the road type of style is how i would describe it.  Ive totaly mastered the style (except for chi strike wich i never use).  It does have one flaw tho, that being extreamly short range on its basic attacks.  This proved to be a problem with the way some of my style combos mixed.  For instance i use paralyzing palm on human opponents, then follow up with a combo from a martial style.  Problem was the last part of the palm combo would knock the guy back a few steps making it where i had to switch syles and  take a few steps forward so that i could hit the first strike in my Tiger combo.  That does not seem like much of a problem when you read it here, but some the stun is variable based on the leevl? of your opponent.  This would make it where a few people where able to block or even get a hit in on me as i stepped in to do damage.  Then i bought Legendary Strike This style is akin to Bruce Lee's Jeet Kwon Do style kicks and kicks have better range.  With this new style under my belt, my combo changed.  Legendary Strike has better range but at its slowest its still as fast a fully maxed out Tiger.  So now i hit em with a palm combo put 3 Legendary Strikes on em, and then finish with a tiger power attack.  Of course then i got white demon.....

So anyway now im on the 3rd chapter.

All hail me the champ of the imperial arena, trust me boys you dont want none of this.

Man i do love this game tho.  its still going strong for me and im digging the hell out of it.  One major thing is starting to happen however, my followers are starting to become more important.  it would be hard for me to explain this with out messing up some story, but suffice it to say they seem to be more important choice and story wise than they where in KOTOR.  Remember how HK47 (i think thats his name) had that cool quest where you could hack him and repair his deleted files.  Well there seems to be more of those type of interactions in this one, and im really digging it.

Anyone else talk to the english guy in the garden of scholors yet?  that was some funny stuff right there.

Its good, i like it. the story is what does it for me. I really like the voice acting and i like the conversations so far. Mostly i agree with everything thats been said here. Combat however is the week part of the game, and thats a shame because Kung Fu is the whole point of the game. they really should have taken some time to make the combat system more deep and complicated but its passable now and in the long run i think it will work for me because i like the story so much. My one real bitch about the game is the blocking animation. I think the shield thing is a total cop out. They should have carried the animation one step farther and made the character block like a normal martial artist. The shield would be fine when you are blocking and ice dart for instance, but when some one kicks to my head i wanna see my character block high. I would really have liked it if the combat worked out more like what the Matrix online looks like. The glowing shiled thing is is just so artificial.
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Close Contact: First to Fight? on: April 08, 2005, 04:28:35 PM
I rented this last night and i dont really know what to think about it yet.

On one hand i see alot of potential.  The game is deep, as deep as SWAT 4 or Ghost Recon ever was.  there are so many controls for this game that most buttons on your controller will have not 2 but 3 functions.  for instance to crouch you click the L stick, to prone you double click.   The white button heals you, your mates, and calls a corpsman for a downed soldier.  this is of course a double edged sword because depth is good, but controllers suck for games with lots of controls.

the fighting its a high point in the game.  Lots of times while playing a FPS you shoot at a group of people turn the corner and see another group of people 1 block away.  in that situation i always ask my self where these other bozos where while i was waxing thier homies.  Well in first to fight people tend to act more realistic.  enemies will reinforce thier comrades who are underfire.  Shooting the wall behind a coverd enemy can freak him out and make him run.  Killing a squads commander will create chaos in thier ranks.  The same goes for your own squad.  If one of you guys go down your team looses moral.  As this happens thier performance decreases.  they take longer to respond to orders, shoot less or less accuratly.  they will also talk in a frightend way take cover more often and even run away and hide.

Sound is ok, it reminds me of the sound effects for Black Hawk Down on the pc.  One bitch tho, and pls Devs take note if you read this bored.  A loud repeating klaxon siren spanning the first hour of gameplay is not a good thing

Grafix are so so.  I would put them a bit beneath the recent brothers in Arms.  Lots of brown.  Muddy textures, and funny looking guns.    Character animations and ragdoll physics are really nice tho.

My one big bitch about the game is level design.  it breaks down like this.  you get a mission and its broken down into lots of little sections.  each section is connected by a load.  Now i cant tell you why they did this but each section so far has consisted of a 5 mabey 10 min gun fight in and intersection or 2 and then Bam you are loading again.  Id say a little less than half of my time has been spent doing something other than shooting terrorists.  I really do hate that.

This game definatly does not deserve a 2, but im not sure it deserves and 8 either.  All in all i think in order to enjoy this game, if its good enouhg for that, i would have to play it on the PC.  too many commands and bad controler aiming = buy it for the PC.

I love reading that the Gameboy is targeted for 6 year olds, because I have tons of games for my DS (I count the GBA games in this) that I think are above the level of a six year old.  I have proof of this because my son is six and he isn't going to be fully grasping games like Advance Wars and Final Fantasy Tactics.  He does like his Minish Cap, though. smile  That's my boy.

At any rate,  I have both a PSP and a DS and I love them both for differing reasons.  I don't thin kthe PSP is going to put Nintendo out of business and I think there is plenty of room in the market for both.  I also don't subscribe to the theory that more games, regardless of quality outweighs fewers great games.  I maintain that I would rather get fewer releases, assuming they are great games than 50 games a month I am unwilling to buy because they lack innovation or quality.
I agree that less games with more quality would be a good thing.  however there has to be some watershed point there you are just putting the damn things out so slow you lose the admitidly short attention span of those that live in this time.  Our boys at the big N got dangerously close to that mark with the gamecube.

So they crack or recode the installer?  I was wondering if they would get rid of Starforce alltogether rather than just cracking it.  I guess that's good news for people into that kind of thing since installing the game normally and then using a crack would seem to defeat the whole purpose of going that route.

I'm not particularly interested in the game (Starforce or not), but I like to keep up with the latest Starforce rumblings.

Not so Stiffler.  You are right they did not recode the installer so even pirates are getting SF installed on thier PC.  However after the crack im happy to say you can remove starforce and viola SH3 no starforce..... now if they would just release a hacked patch id be quite happy.

Why is it the guys fault?  he is not the one in a commited relationship.  The guy is doing what all guys looking for a woman do.  he is listening to his little head.  The girl, your sister in law however is walking all over a commited relationship.  She is cheating on your brother, and she is the one causing the pain.  The guy was just trying to get some, and contrary to what may be popular opinion has no responsiblity at all regarding your sisterin law and brothers relationship.

In my opinion the resolution is simple and goes one of 2 ways.  you A) decide to stay the hell out of it, because mark my words only bad will come of this, or you B) talk to the sister in law and make it clear that either she will tell your brother or you will.  You should definatly leave the guy alone because not only will bad come of that, but by your reaction here on the board (assuming its not frstrated man talk and bluster) )that bad will be aimed at you.

Good episode of Survivor!  Liked the double elimination; though man, was half an hour of tribal council too much.  Good riddance to Angie.  Willard never had any opinion of.

Odd decision for Koror to give Ibrehem immunity.  Sure it messed up Ulong's choice of who to vote off; but he was also one of the two strongest members on that tribe?

Yeah, its hard to figure out exactly why 3 voted for Ibrehem. Were they moved by his speech of "look at my performance in all the challenges, not just this one". Or did they note his crappy performance in the last challenge and think "Yeah, they need to keep him cause he sucks". Or did they think he would be the best target after the merge (i.e. the strongest always seem to be prime targets after the merge.)?
I disagree Ibrehem was not the strongest person on the tribe.  It was angie.  that girl has owned in all challenges and completly outdone all of the men.  It was brilliant strat by Koror.  It made them loose one of the biggest threats challenge wise, and it functioned as Psych war.  it was like the final kick in the balls after getting the crap kicked out of you.

So i finished this last night.  On AttA's scale of creamy gaming goodness i give this one a 9.5.  There only reason its not perfect in my book is some technical problems with multiplayer and a really annoying sound bug.  Other than these 2 problems this game is with out a doubt the best WW2 game ever.  It also happens to stand next to Ghost Recon and Rainbow six in terms of squad based goodness.  I highly recomend this game.  Its so good im starting over on the new difficulty i just unlocked.

In the long run however i think the Xbox version will be better. This is strange coming from me but i think the controller kept me honest. U see the thing is this is not like FSW where you cant ever hit a person who is behind cover. in BIA if you can see a wee little bit of a kraut's head then you can give him a .30 caliber scalping. However this game focuses on realism and that includes the fact that your average particapant in WW2 could not hit shit 90% of the time. The sight drift and the fact that a controller is naturaly less accurate than the mouse kept me from going rambo on the game. It forced me to use my squad and rely on my team to make things happen. thats not to say i did not do any killing, i definatly shot my fair share of gerrys. The difference is that i think if i had a mouse i would never have done the whole "find fix flank and kill" tactics that this game is based on. insteed i would have sat behind forward cover and picked off the krauts. I think in the end the Pc version will be too easy and less fun as a result.

Oh god, I'm on Purple Heart lane (or road?) and that mission is just a damn nightmare.  It's fun, but it's a damn nightmare for my men.

I just finished that last night.  That mish was a bitch.  The part where you had to make it across the causeway was totaly insane.  Just think, those guys back in the 40s actualy did that shit.  Thats what i keep telling my self as i play this game.  Im in awe at the courage that these people had, and the insane stuff they did, to save the world from the axis.  Amazing stuff.

I can't even tell where the targeting cursor is half the time.

Targeting cursor? U mean you arent using the iron sights?

Keep in mind you are still in the "tutorial" phase.  that mg was set up like that to teach you how they work and how to deal with them.  Later on in the game specificly in "Buying The Farm" you wil be wishing there was a nice alley for you to go down.

Ive been playing on hard no crosshairs and no suppression icons. I am just a couple of missions past the Tank in the Court Yard bit and my mission is to take a farm. I can say with out any shame at all that the germans have no problem kicking my ass alot of the time. With that said its still doable and very very fun. Ive graduated from normal Infantry to Fallshirmajager troops, and let me tell you thats a whole different world.

They not only shoot better but they show more awarness to the concept of flanking both in practice and in putting up a good and brave defense when they are flanked. I dont see them run out into the open only to get wacked by the fire team. With these troops ive seen more team work between units as well. Its not totaly common, but there have been very specific instances where they have both responded to a flank by moving to pin my assault team, and i am seeing them flank my fire team as well. its definatly forced me to keep on my toes personaly as well and learn to command my troops with precision even if i am a long distance away from them.

All in all a very cool game and in my opinion a much better "battle field simulator than FSW was even when you had it in army mode.

Multiplayer however is still a bust.

German paratroopers were nasty, nasty infantry, many of which used that ridiculously advanced scoped automatic rifle. Anyways, this sounds totally cool.

Ive been looking for a FG42 but have yet to find one.
