1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Top 5 Best New shows on TV on: October 20, 2004, 08:18:38 PM
Lost - missed the last 2 episodes :-(  Someone call me so I don't miss tonight's episode :-)

Boston Legal - I love me Shatner and Spade.  Even if it is ANOTHER law related show.

West Wing - Season premiere is tonight.  Hopefully it will be better than ER's premiere. . . that show seems to hold less and less interest for me after Anthony Edwards.

Joey was a letdown.  And I don't seem to be the target demographic for Veronica Mars and Desperate Housewives :-)
2  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Open Water (spoiler) on: October 20, 2004, 05:57:47 PM
Never saw it, looked stupid when I saw the trailer.

With that out of the way, I think Americans just expect happy endings for movies all the time, whether it's a war movie, dramatic comedy, etc. :-)

Korean movies, on the other hand, tend to be tragedies (in the Greek/Roman sense).  The hero sometimes dies, usually in a great noble struggle, or the husband dies, or the couple never gets together, etc.   Alot of foreigners that watch Korean movies hate the two things that Korean movies seem to exemplify: tragedy and melodrama.  I guess it's a cultural thing, but I like the fact that the couple doesn't ALWAYS get together at the end. . . that seems boring to me.
3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Haha, Nobody knows me in real life. Shall we Dance was good. on: October 19, 2004, 06:25:18 PM
I was mildly interested in seeing this film, but then Ebert and Roeper sums it up nicely: "Terrible film, terrible film."  Add to that the 40 odd percent rating on rotten tomatoes, and the fact that it's a remake, and I'm staying away.

I'm assuming most of you that liked the film never saw the original(1997).  One of my girl friends made us rent it to watch it back in college, and it was very good.

Any of you that watched both, was it similar or totally different films?
4  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Raptorman, US on: October 19, 2004, 07:57:02 AM
Ah, took him long enough :-)  I remember reading the whole thing in 1 sitting.  Quite a disturbing feeling not being able to read what happens next :-)   Sort of like commercials. . . . .
5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Should we light the watchfires? (all Gone Golders) on: October 17, 2004, 08:03:12 AM
Don't worry msduncan, I agree with you.  Creating 1 thread in 1 forum does not a spam make.  And since I don't own a console, I didn't give console gold 1 thought.   I found it accidentally when someone mentioned it in the Avault forums, I think.

So yeah, I think there are alot of people that don't know about this place.
6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Pf Changs on: October 17, 2004, 07:58:31 AM
I've been to very nice Chinese restaurants where it runs 80 dollars a person (in Korea no less), but I'm telling you, the best Chinese food are in the hole in the wall 5 dollar joints.  Of course, you have to pick the right ones; otherwise, u'll end up with stomach cramps, or maybe even a cockroach in your food :-D

Same idea goes for Korean food.  The expensive Korean restaurants, especially in the US, tend to suck.  You know a restaurant is good when u see little old grandmas making the food in a small family run restaurant, as opposed to a chic place with Mexicans in the back making Korean food. . .
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone watching Desperate Housewives on ABC? on: October 15, 2004, 06:26:05 PM
Saw the first episode, part of the second.  I mean, it's an okay show, but just not my taste.  It is a little too womanish for my tastes.  But then, so is Charmed, Gilmore Girls, and any other show that showcases only women. . .
8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need Dinner Idea for Tonight on: October 14, 2004, 05:00:15 PM
It's hard to go wrong with Italian or beef :-)  Unless they are vegetarian or have some with phobia with tomatoes.

For Italian, Baked Ziti is pretty easy to make.  Add a tossed salad, bake up some garlic bread, maybe some soup, and u have a good meal.  Lasagna is good too, but it takes way over 30 minutes, even the ones u can buy in the grocery store.

Steaks with baked potato w/fixins and steamed vegetables are good too.  I mean, if the guests like beef, they'll want it rare/medium, which is basically 1-3 minutes on each side. . . nothing as easy and fast to cook as steak :-)  I usually cook mine like 45 seconds on each side, just enough to brown the outside, but that's me ;-)

I'm getting hungry.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Counter-Strike? on: October 14, 2004, 11:51:05 AM
Don't have the money to buy CS:S :-(

I do still play CS, but I usually get owned since I am on a 56k.  I'm lucky if I manage a 1:1 ratio lol.  Although on a good night, I can still average my usual (cable modem) ratio of 8:5 with a few good sprays from the para ;-)

Right now I usually play DoD and Trenches(beta WWI mod, sorta like DoD).  They seem more forgiving for 56k.
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/13/04 - HOLY CRAP!!!!! on: October 14, 2004, 07:44:18 AM
Thx gameoverman.  I hope they show a rerun soon, I want to see it.  Sounds  fun from reading ur recap :-)
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want to play Freespace 2! on: October 14, 2004, 07:41:45 AM
Thx for the info guys.

Thx for the offer Danger.  I gotta try the demo first to see if I like it :-)  If it is anything like Privateer and Freelancer, I should be hooked lol.  If I do like it, I might just take u up on ur offer :-)

Dang, a 60mb demo takes really really long to download on a 56k :-(  1 hour left to go. . .
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/13/04 - HOLY CRAP!!!!! on: October 14, 2004, 06:18:26 AM
Does anyone care to write out a brief synopsis for me?  Pretty please?

Or link me to a site with a guide on what happened on this episode.

13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want to play Freespace 2! on: October 14, 2004, 04:38:17 AM
So, I never even heard of this game until I read the thread about Smart maybe making Freespace 3 over at GG a while back.

I want to try it, but none of the 15+ sites on the offical page that are supposed to host the demo file have it. . . guess it has been too long?

Anyone know where I can download the demo?

P.S.  Is Descent: Freespace the same Descent that came out when Doom was popular?  I remember playing a game where u are a ship flying around in caves and shooting things?
14  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/13/04 - HOLY CRAP!!!!! on: October 14, 2004, 02:02:20 AM
Oh my.

My "nap" went from 3 to 6 hours :-(  I missed the presidential debates AND this episode. . . sigh.  That's the second time I missed this show.  I guess it's just not in the cards :-)
15  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone watch Montel aka puppet mouthpiece for Sylvia Browne? on: October 13, 2004, 01:16:11 PM
Do u guys believe in Slyvia Browne's "powers"?  To those that don't know, she's one of the (in)famous people known for their so called psychic powers.

Every single time I change channels and see Montel's talk show, I see her on it spouting about how someone's illness is a blood disease, or how someone else's dead wife makes sounds in the house, etc.

Anyone believe in this cr*p?  Because it seems alot of people do. . .

If she really had powers, she would be filthy rich.  Instead, she goes on Montel hawking her books. . . why hawk books when u can just win the lottery or trade stocks (that are affected by major world events) every day?  hmm.
16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [Apprentice] Episode 5 discussion [SPOILERS!] on: October 12, 2004, 08:51:03 AM
I agree.

Pamela was dealt a cr*p hand.  She got stuck with the losers aka the girls team, and on top of that made the leader of the losers.  She had to be a strong leader to even hope of winning, and they came pretty darn close, being only 10 dollars off.

It was her first time working with them; I don't think Trump should have fired her for people assessment capability.  I mean, she put people where she AND they thought they would be good at.  If I was in her shoes, I don't know if I could have done any better.  What was she supposed to do, interview each of them for hours on end to see what they were good at?

In the end, though, she set the price.

I admire her though.  If Pamela was a conniving b***h like the rest of the team, she would have just let the lawyer girl make up a figure.  When they lost, Pamela could have just blamed her.

It's funny that the girls can't get along.  I would have thought the men would argue more than the women.  Boy, was I proven wrong.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC - old game] Sacrifice strategies needed :-) on: October 12, 2004, 02:34:54 AM
Thx Blackhawk.  That is such an easy way to win the battle :-)  I zipped through 2 "used to be hard" levels usin gur guardian strategy lol.

That said, it seems to be a little cheap to use that tactic :-)  The Ai doesn't seem to know how to counter it, and it's so easy to kill them off.
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / EVERYONE READ PLEASE on: October 12, 2004, 02:25:24 AM
Since you put alot of thought into this, I'll be honest.

I came to GG for several reasons.
1.  The number, and diversity of people.
2.  My love of pc gaming
3.   The ability to get all the latest news of new games, whether by the front page or from the forums.
4.  Being able to talk about abortion, checking up on what member X did last night, and seeing what new games were coming out; all in the same forum.

To be honest, Console Gold, and your superb handling, has made this place a refuge away from home.

That being said, it's not home (to me).  I am still waiting for a resurrection of GG, or an equivalent.  Like you said, this is Console Gold.  While you can accomodate some things on my list (like 1 and 3), you can't accomodate all of them without turning CG into something it is not.

That's my take, and I have no idea what other people think.

Of course, in the end, I'll go where most of the crowd goes :-)  After all, GG was mostly about the people.

:-)  I know lol
20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Three Days to Think About It on: October 11, 2004, 12:19:50 PM
I agree with Zaxxon.  Why get worked up over something we don't even have the facts about?

I'm more sad than pissed.  I have had so much free time the last couple of days. . . feels like I lost a friend more than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, CG is great.  But I miss the hustle and bustle of GG, as well as the variety of topics.  Compared to GG, CG seems a bit dead member/topic wise.  But that's just me missing something :-)
21  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC - old game] Sacrifice strategies needed :-) on: October 11, 2004, 10:48:24 AM
Thx for the responses guys :-)

OMG there's a pause button??!!!  lol.  Ooh, that makes the game a bit more bearable :-)

I try to use spells, but they seem a little hard to target with.  Is there a next target/ next foe button?  It's hard trying to use any of my single target attack spells when all the enemies are swarming around. . ..  EDIT: Sorry, dumb question.  I just read where u stated that u can issue commands while paused also :-)
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC - old game] Sacrifice strategies needed :-) on: October 11, 2004, 09:58:47 AM
Quote from: "depward"
I just respect whomever actually does play Sacrifice.  I tried to get into it awhile back, just couldn't.  I like the idea and I wish I were somewhat good at those types of games.  Though, it's almost in a genre of its own.  Good luck with those strats   :D

Ooh, I never said I was good at these types of games.  Heck, I never said I was decent lol.  I'm mostly a turn based strategy gamer ala MOO and EU, with an ocassional appetite for CS/DoD :-)

I have no idea what type of game Sacrifice falls under. . .
23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC - old game] Sacrifice strategies needed :-) on: October 11, 2004, 09:24:31 AM
So I finally got my copy of Sacrifice back from my brother after, oh, two years :-)  It's as fun as I remember it, if not just as hard.  I stopped playing the first time around, since Pyro's wizards were too d*mn tough after the 4th or 5th level.

I realized that I still suck lol.

I need some serious help.  Anyone remember their strategies with this game?

1.  Do you have a specific order of missions that you do in order to get certain monsters and spells?  I did charnel first to get his scythes and fallen creatures(I love them), but then I have been with James for the next 4 missions. . . I like rocks :-)  His spells suck though.

2.  Any strategies in formations/attack strategies/combined arms makeup?  I tend to have phalanx formation for archer types, I tend to use mostly archer types, and I usually go for 2 expensive(3 soul) units instead of 6 cheap (1 soul ) units.  Good or bad?

3.  Do u use guardians at all?  They seem useless, since it lowers your fighting force, and any wizard with a couple guys can kill them and convert them before I can reach the manalith anyways. . .

4.  I usually go for 2 manahours and 2 manaliths, and then concentrate on killing the opposing wizards army and converting, before I finally go after his altar.  I tend not to go after his manaliths unless it's on the way.  Is that a decent strategy?

Thx for any tips and reading my long *ss post :-)
24  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need some simple IE/Flash ad help on: October 11, 2004, 01:01:50 AM
Thx so much guys :-)

I didn't know I could load pages like 50% faster just by using Firefox :-)  Using dialup, downloading those banner ads are real bandwidth killers lol.
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Warhammer 40,000 on: October 10, 2004, 10:50:10 PM
That sounds so geeky :-)

Anyways, I question how a store can make a profit not selling to a niche market like gaming, but a niche product within a niche market. . . sounds like a failure to me.
26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Panini ideas (grilled sandwiches) on: October 10, 2004, 10:46:02 PM
If you like reubens, maybe you can make a reuben panini?  All you would need is rye, corned beef, sauerkraut and mustard. . . seems simple :-)
27  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need some simple IE/Flash ad help on: October 10, 2004, 12:54:14 AM

Thanks Destructor.

I guess I should finally switch to Firefox lol.  I tried Avant Browser, but it was too "different."  Hopefully I can get used to Firefox.

To think I was a Netscape/Mac zealot back in college.  Look at me now, clutching to my Windows XP/IE. . . . I feel like a traitor :-D
28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need some simple IE/Flash ad help on: October 09, 2004, 12:16:04 PM
I remember reading this over at GG a while ago, but for obvious reasons I can't find it.

I am getting annoying Flash web ads, and I want to get rid of them.  I don't want to use another browser, since I am used to Microsoft's not so good IE browser.  However, I am starting to hate Flash, and since I am on dialup anyways I really don't need it for anything.

So, any way to get rid of Flash?  Do I check some option somewhere, or delete the installed components, etc?

Thx in advance.  And I hope this question is in the right section :-)
29  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone else having problems with Gone Gold? on: October 09, 2004, 08:56:07 AM
Just wanted to add my hello.

Guess I have to buy a playstation or something. . .

I had questions about the Lost episode thread too. . . I forget now :-(
