I think that for many of us OO PC gamers is the archive of PC material back at OO. If it isn't recovered then I don't think that OO will have the same appeal for the PC forum crowd.  I agree with DireAussie about the very high quality of the PC gaming discussion at OO.  That is what kept me at OO.

I do think that we OO refugees that think about staying here at GT need to think just as much as how we can fit into GT rather than just how we can change GT into the new OO.

So with OO being relatively a goner, and previously the GG problems.. I need some assurance that GT won't shit the bed next week and bail out! I demand an independant audit by a non-biased third party (preferably a drunken mexican, or a drunken canadian.. Or a drunken mexican canadian? Back bacon burritos! Hrmm I am on to something here... ah oh, I'm starting to sound like Lord Mortis now, quick somebody slap me!).

Anyhow seriously though, does GT do regular backups? Have they been tested to ensure recovery would work? I'm hesitant to lurk (and be shunned) at yet another forum if there isn't a recovery plan in place.  Please feel free to shun me post answer.

Well, it looks like there was an tech emergency this week and they had it fixed pronto.  It's one of the threads in whatever the forum is called that discusses forum issues.  I don't know the specifics of the backup situation, though.
845  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: May 18, 2008, 04:50:59 AM
Maybe GT should just create a drama subforum for containment purposes.  We could call it something else and then suck people into it.  The good will come out, and the rest........... deadhorse for eternity.

And before anyone asks, yes, I will decide who are the good people.

847  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: May 17, 2008, 11:57:21 PM
I like most everything here but I agree that the PC section is the part of OO I miss most.  If the GT powers that be don't mind forum games, those can be added if there is a desire.  The PC forum could be strong but that just requires us PC gamers to get active and get posting.  It's the old information that is on OO that would be the hardest to replace.

I wonder how many of the OO mods, etc., are looking at this long holiday and are thinking that they don't miss the chores vs. wanting to assume the responsibility again.  I have no doubt that Rip is hard at work, but I don't get the vibe that OO's disappearance is being seen as a calamity anymore.

Somebody should start planning the "Two months since OO died" party on this board.  I'm pretty sure we won't be celebrating it on OO.

Also, why does the temp page refer to "OO Forum Staff" when no one but Rip seems to want to take any ownership of what's going on?

At this point I don't even remember (If I did ever know) who the powers that be behind OO are/were.  I know Rip was technical, but beyond that, I was never certain.

Thanks for asking. She seems to be overtly doing better. I explained to her if she is not ready she does not have to break up that minute....which she was asking if we should break up right now. The last few days she has been upbeat....but I think in the back of her mind she knows she (we) have some tough decisions to make. But thinkgs have been normal like they were pre bombshell

It would be cool if we got a forum games forum and then I'm not sure anymore what OO would offer.  I was never a real member of the family there.  Mostly a lurker, but not one of the real regulars.  More like one of the guys that you see at the bar at Cheers half the time but never really fit in completely.  Make a joke and Norm will look at you and if you are lucky, smile, and then go back to the gang.  I can be a third stringer here as much as anywhere else.  (Gee, did I ever open the door with that one....)

I don't know why, but this over a month OO disapperance is starting to leave a bitter taste in my mouth.  I'm sure the folks are working hard, but I'm not getting any real sense of disappointment from the OO powers that be that we aren't there anymore.  I don't know why I feel that way, but I do.  I will probably change my mind when OO comes back online.

I did have one story that was on the frontpage for a while which was nice, though.

It sounds like both of you have some decisions to make.  No one should be forced to become a parent if they don't want to.  And if you don't want to give up your lifestyle for a child then you shouldn't do so.  Your girlfriend, if she really wants a child, should say thanks but no thanks and get rid of you.  Many women feel that a child is integral to a fulfilled life.  Not all, but many.  If the two of you can't support each other, it is better to find people who can.  I have serveral friends thinking about these issues and many of them think about the "what if" factor 20 years down the road.

"Why am I wasting my time" isn't a big deal to me, or at least to my understanding it.  It sounds like she took the news as a body blow and reacted emotionally.  Of course, did she mean wasting her time trying to have a child, wasting her time with you or just wasting her time on Earth?  Some very important distinctions there.  Hopefully she didn't mean the latter.  Some open communication is necesary, but, of course, she needs to talk to you for that to happen.

Which would you consider to be worse: a life with her and a child, or a life without her?  Seems like that is an important question to answer.

Post 100 whoop!

I am now starting to worry about OO.  I think OO will survive rebirth but I think it has been down long enough that the membership dynamic could easily be changed.  I think that a lot of the forum games might be shot at this point, for example.  Not a major disaster but just indicative of the disruption.

I'm sure that Rip and the rest are working hard, but the lack of communications is disheartening.

Good question as to what we want they new OO to be.  I think it will come down to what do people really come to OO for?  The gaming sections, especially PC?  The forum games which of course are a recent addition relatively speaking?  Was it habit for some folks?  I hope it wasn't for the R&P forum, but to each their own.  I'm trying to think what it was about OO that made it home for me.  I htink some of it was simply knowing the people, although for me it was more as a reader and not a participant.
