Got my book yesterday and oh boy is it thick! Even if I never play, it's a nice looking book...
Any suggestions on where to start/flip through or is this a cover to cover thing?

I started off with the paper insert that gives a nice introduction, and then I dove in to the dice mechanics and character creation.  After that I read up on the galaxy in chapter 10.  Now I am going back through and reading more cover to cover.

I think they're more concerned with what kind of loot they can conveniently "rescue" from the other ship. They don't have to tell anyone about the extra stuff when they unceremoniously drop them at some backwater space station hospital.

Plus, with the obligations you guys have, any extra credits might save your lives. slywink

Hell with loot...I want the ship itself!  I am an expert mechanic!

Josiah catches his balance as the vessels jump in the turbulence.  As he approaches the junction, he turns to the left to head towards the engines..."Tho, do your best to get anyone still alive out.  I am going to check on the engines, there may have been a mechanic on board.

Josiah then points to one of the nameless crew..."You're with me you lucky dog, let's move like we got a rancor on our tails!

Josiah takes off at a brisk pace down the corridor.

Ron I am curious, some other reviews have been a tad negative on the UI.  The only UI issue it looks like you had was the text boxes overlapping...or were there other annoyances with the UI?  (It doesn't matter to me, I backed at a fairly high level, so I am going to enjoy the hell out of the game).

I ended up ordering the book from Amazon. It will be here Thursday.. Not looking to roll a character for the forum game yet. Gonna just observe for now to make sure it's something I can commit to.. Haven't done a non-computer RPG in a LONG time..
Besides, not too sure our priorities would sync.... I mean really. you guys are worried about some ships distress signal? What about the poor dead Wookie in the vents!

I like the design, I just don't want them automatically filtering.

You can teach it how to filter.  If you drag a message between the tabs it will remember for future emails.  So for example emails from Gaming Trend were originally going to Updates tab, but after dragging one over to the Forums tab they all go there now.

Ok, my character has been updated based off of the new species available, and molded to better fit my backstory, as such he is now a Technician --> Mechanic who will eventually pick up a specialization in Bounty Hunter Gadgeteer I think.

102  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Star Wars: Edge of the Empire - Forum RPG - OOC thread on: July 22, 2013, 03:52:14 PM
So looking at the current characters, it looks like we could use a bit more muscle, and computer skills...unfortunately it looks like we can have one or the other, but not both.

So I have come up with the following:

Josiah - Human Bounty Hunter Gadgeteer with an additional specialization in either Outlaw Tech or Slicing, which would get us computer skills.

Josiah was born and raised on Balmorra where his father and mother worked in an imperial factory building AT-STs.  Being around the factories, Josiah took special interest in tinkering with any mechanical device he could get his hands on, be it spare protocol droids, blasters, shock gloves or broken down computer terminals in the city dump.  When Josiah was old enough he took a job at the local factory working as a millwright, keeping all of the equipment in good repair.  Unfortunately one fateful day while tinkering with a discarded holo-messenger Josiah unlocked a message that detailed plans of a the Tenloss crime syndicate to intercept a shipment of AT-STs that were heading off-world in order to reverse engineer them to develop a superior rival vehicle.  Unknown at the time, unlocking the hidden message triggered a homing beacon signal to be sent back the leaders of the Tenloss Syndicate.  Josiah took the holo-messenger with him, none the wiser.

Four nights later while working his typically uneventful night shift Josiah was set upon by 3 vicious looking trandoshan.  No match for the three mercenaries, Josiah was quickly incapacitated and bound with a fairly rudimentary set of binders for transport.  As Josiah came too, he overheard the trandoshan talking, picking up bits and pieces about the Tenloss crime syndicate, a missing holo-messenger and a bounty that the trandoshan were planning on cashing in.  Thankfully for Josiah, part of his standard gear as an after hours security guard was a set of binders very similar to the set he found himself currently bound with, and he was able to quickly pick the lock to free himself.  With a little quick thinking, Josiah was able to sabotage a nearby protocol droid to provide a distraction for his escape...Knowing that he couldn't go back home and put his parents in danger, Josiah secured transport off-world by offering his services as a mechanic to a spice trader who he encountered at the space port.  Josiah has been on the run from the bounty and the Tenloss syndicate ever since.

The only issue with Jawa is that they get a boost to cunning which really doesn't do much for a technician/bounty hunter.

Josiah studies the readings for a minute before turning to the rest of the crew..."Looks like we got some live ones on that freighter, but we don't have much time.  Anyone here a skilled enough pilot to get us in and docked with the freighter before she is crushed?"

Make a Jawa!

Honestly, I suggest doing whatever seems the most fun. I'm sure Turtle can adjust for party composition. Being slightly competent is probably good, though. That's one reason I went with a Smuggler instead of a Trader, so I could have a combat skill in-class.

Working on my background. I think I have the basic idea figured out and should post it later (I'm not an uber-SW-fan, so figuring out the lore side of things isn't trivial).

Hey Turtle, are we assuming the characters will know each other? Does one of the characters own the ship? How do we choose equipment?

While I know you were likely joking about the Jawa...I was considering Josiah being either a Jawa or a Sluissi which would fit the mechanic feel I have.

One thing I am trying to weigh is the difference between ability scores (characteristics) and skills...how different is rolling a pool of say 4 ability dice  (4 agility) versus say a pool of 3 dice that are 1 ability and 2 proficiency (3 agility, 2 ranged light).  By improving agility, while expensive it improves all skills associated with agility.

So as to not clutter up the actual game thread, I figured I would start an OOC thread.  Now that we are officially getting started, and with the addition of tons of new races, I am possibly rethinking some of my character design.  After writing the backstory and reading it through a few times, it would seem that Josiah likely is a mechanic of some sort first off, with a dash of combat thrown in.  Thoughts on if we will be ok with only one combat focused character?

Josiah steps up to the ship's terminals to see if he can't get a better reading on the distress signal..."We need to see how much time they have, I figure we should be able to pick up the freighter on our scanners and calculate from there how fast it is being pulled down by the gravity field of that gas giant.  Of course it could also be a trap set by pirates to lure us into a vulnerable position so we best be on guard.  Perhaps we should also try hailing the vessel to see if anyone is alive on board."

So tomorrow is my last day at IBM as I have officially been laid off and was unable to find a position into which I could transfer.  Last night I had to cut open a wall in my bathroom roughly the size of a 32" door in order to get to the water lines for the shower of my one and only bathroom as a water line was leaking.  And now my wife just came in the house in tears because she managed to wreck both of our cars in one fell swoop by backing out of the garage right in to my car which was parked in the yard.  Thankfully it is just cosmetic damage...I think but still.  My depression has kicked in full force and I am struggling to make it through each and every day.  I could really use a break to go my way.

They did get steamrolled, more so than I've ever witnessed.

The sad thing is this shouldn't have been the public spectacle it became.  It was turned into a race thing when it shouldn't have been.

If riots occur I think it's due in large part to the media's coverage of this tragic case.

Anecdotal and all...but my mother lives in Sanford near the lakefront and it is a zoo down there right now.  She was walking along the lakefront a few nights ago and overheard multiple conversations from folks claiming they would join in with rioting if Zimmerman isn't found guilty of murder.
