6001  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 12, 2004, 07:53:23 PM
While not optimal, I have no problem soloing as a scout, just have to know what to hunt.  Youhave to be careful picking targets and where to fight to avoid adds.
6002  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 12, 2004, 01:17:17 PM
Each server seems different with distribution.  Part of the group dynamic really depends on the size and makeup of the group.  If you go standard fare of nuker, healer, tank and maybe a scout it can be bland.  Throw in an enchanter and see the fun of taking on groups of 5 to 6 enemies with no worries, throw in a few predators and see massive damage flying through the air.  As you level and people get more different abilities it really begins to flesh itself out.

App 3 make a huge difference, as a note you do not have to go in order, you can go from app 1 to app 3 or app 1 to adept 1 and so on.

Character Name - Graul

Lvl 16 Troll Scout/Predator soon to be assassin.
6005  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 12, 2004, 05:51:58 AM
No problems with lag or performance.  There seems to be a memory leak, but other than that no hiccups for me.

The more divers spells come at higher lvls.  It really isn't until lvl 20 that you start to feel different.  A rogue isn't much different from a predator, but an assassin and brigand, quite different play style.  By lvl 22 which I hit in beta, I needed 3 full toolbars for all my abilities.  Finding NPC's can be a pain, but then it makes you learn the city.  Group leveling can be very fast, and you really could ignore quests if you wanted and still level at a decent clip...

What exactly about the party system feels wierd?  I am more than willing to answer questions.
6006  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 11, 2004, 11:50:06 AM
Well, in beta there was a way to see FPS and at 1600x1200, high detail I was steadily getting 30fps.  If you have not tried, many people with ATI cards during beta saw a nice performance increase using the omega driver set.
6007  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 11/10/04 on: November 11, 2004, 04:09:39 AM
Very impressive episode.  Really am loving it, so how much longer before the korean woman lets it out to her husband that she speaks english.
6008  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 11, 2004, 12:27:23 AM
To be honest, it will run but you will need to tweak some settings.  I am suprised at your performance Olaf, as you have same ram, superior vid card, yet I can run at 1600x1200, high detail with no system lag at all.
6009  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 10, 2004, 06:19:00 PM
The other issue with locked combat being the way it is in EQ2... they can predict the amount of power someone has when going into an encounter.  So lets say you go into a dungeon, encounters are tailored to be doable by groups of 6.  Throw in some extra healers outside of the group and now the encounters become trivial.  It was stated part of it was for this very reason, they know how powerful a group can be, there is no variable of high lvl buffing/healing to unbalance.
6010  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 10, 2004, 02:14:13 PM
Just a quick response... there are pros and cons to the locked combat, and to SOE the pros outweighed the cons.  The big thing is it stops kill stealing.  While i hate not being able to help someone in battle, I hate kill stealing even worse.

Spell lists are fairly bland until lvl 20 when you get to choose your final class.
6011  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 10, 2004, 01:23:55 PM
I subscribed for 6 months and it worked out to be something like 12 a month.  Quite honestly when a game like this hooks you, you spend much less money on fringe games that you don't buy that you normally would have if you weren't addicted to EQ2.
6012  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 10, 2004, 01:05:18 PM
They have not released a full list of racial traditions.  None of them are game breaking, however some races can get bonuses to crafting which is nice if you are a crafter.  Honestly, pick the race that you will enjoy looking at for a long time.

For pinging and tracert...

example server..

ping mistmoore.everquest2.com
tracert mistmoore.everquest2.com

just use the full server name to check.  They have 8 new servers since launch.  The roleplaying server has been getting some of the heaviest loads, yet has been very lag free for me, despite being on the east coast, and the server on west coast.
6013  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 09, 2004, 08:26:26 PM
last night on antonio bayle there were 9 instances running of the evil isle.  Each instance is supposed to be roughly 60 players.

Playing today has been a good bit more crowded, but not lagging at all, no stability issues.  Without having access to hard numbers, but looking at various zones, talking to people on isles to find out number of instances and so on, and knowing level ranges I would say there was roughly 800 or 900 people on the RP server this morning.
6014  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 Server Choice on: November 09, 2004, 11:51:11 AM
Well I picked up my copy yesterday, the collectors edition DVD.  First impressions..... grr... my machine has Sonic Record Now on it.  After crashing 5 times halfway through the install I figured out that Sonic DLA was the culprit.  After turning that off the install went flawlessly.  The came signing up, again flawless... then I played.  Played for about 4 hours, no crashes, no lag, no hiccups... very smooth launch, although today is the true test as the masses get it.  Only thing I am pissed about really is that for some reason the name filter would not let me use my name of Arkon.
6015  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 Server Choice on: November 08, 2004, 08:36:43 PM
I was suprised, being on east coast myself how good of a ping I had to antonia bayle.  Before you decide do a tracert and ping to see the different ones.  I had 9 hops to both the east coast and west coast servers, so I am not too worried about it.
6016  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 Server Choice on: November 08, 2004, 07:21:15 PM
I get a ping of 26 to east coast servers and 86 to west coast servers.
6017  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / is the EQ2 collectors edition DVD or CD? on: November 08, 2004, 03:11:15 PM
It is the DVD version.  There are 3 versions, the CD version, the DVD version and the collectors edition which is DVD.

Given the cost of DVD drives, it amazes me that there are so many people out there without one.

Actually I would say the steelers are playing more like the steelers of old then they are playing like the pats.
6020  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 Server Choice on: November 08, 2004, 02:21:13 PM
I doubt the 4 player per account thing will change.  I just wish they would come out and give the exact reason why they are doing that.  Personnaly it doesn't affect me as I never play more than 3 characters.
6021  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Steelers - 27 .... Eagles - 3 on: November 08, 2004, 02:16:19 PM
On a side note... if you listen to Myron Cope I read he was taken to the hospital at halftime... hopefully he is ok.

I must say I have been impressed with the performance of the secondary.  Lastly, what is the status of a new contract with Hines Ward?  He is a free agent at the end of the season isn't he?

I have been quite impressed with the play of Chris Hoke, big time play considering who he is replacing.
6022  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 Server Choice on: November 08, 2004, 01:28:27 PM
Antonia Bayle ( I believe that is the name) is the roleplaying preferred server.  My guild is voting currently as to which server we are going to, hoping to end up on the rp preferred server.

Lockdown, I was so mad when I saw Burress drop that ball.  He had an easy touchdown and he got cocky.  I really was suprised that Cowher wasn't going bonkers.
6024  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Last-minute pre-order... EQ2 or WoW? on: November 08, 2004, 05:43:41 AM
I only said that about staying civil as in the past EQ2 vs. WoW threads turn in to flame fests, especially about SOE and thier reputation.
6025  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Last-minute pre-order... EQ2 or WoW? on: November 08, 2004, 04:10:21 AM
Hopefully this thread can stay civil and not break out a war as many of your criteria are very opinion based.

Immersion - For me I was much more immersed in EQ2.  NPC voiceovers are great, they made me feel like part of the world.  Going in to temple street in Freeport for example, seeing cats chasing rats around, then hearing a ratonga come running buy screaming for help as his dinner was chasing him (he was an NPC chef ratonga, being chased by a cat).  As a troll all the ambient animals in town would hiss at me.  Many NPC's would insult me telling me how bad I smell.  Ambient animals and NPC's react differently to the different races.  Also having more realistic graphics helped with immersion.  While I think the graphics of WoW are very good for the style, it is not my personal style.

Detail - In EQ2 at low levels, there is very little different in weapons and armor, however as you progress items become more and more unique looking.  One of my favorites is watching people battle with flails and whips, the animations are very well done in my opinion.  In WoW, I felt like I looked the same at lvl 20 as I did at lvl 1.  I also never understood why there were slots that you could not get items for before a certain level, especially helmets.

Low Grind Value - WoW has the edge here, but I wouldn't say EQ2 has that much more of a grind value to say it is bad.  There are lots of quests in both games that give very nice xp rewards.  I would say in sheer number of kills WoW requires less to level than EQ2.

Solo - WoW is much more solo friendly.  There is a lot of solo content in WoW.  EQ2 soloing is possible at all levels but the amount of solo content is limited.

Stability - WoW is more stable at this point than EQ2 is, however from what I have read, part of the problem was with the wide sweeping changes towards the end of beta for EQ2, old chars were causing server stability issues that shouldn't be around come retail, however it is SOE, so expect it to be rocky at times especially after patches.

Overall both games are very good, but for my tastes I will be sticking with EQ2.
6026  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Steelers - 27 .... Eagles - 3 on: November 08, 2004, 03:46:33 AM
As for Hines Ward mocking dance... it is in response to T.O. mocking Ray Lewis last week.  My understanding is that Ward and T.O. are fairly good friends and T.O. seemed to be laughing about it on the sidelines.

The fact of the matter is that winning while having injuries is what defines teams in todays NFL.  Every team will have major injuries during the course of the season.  The Steelers have had thier share of injuries and have played through them.  Many thought the season was over when Maddox was sidelined but the team has battled through it.  The simple truth is the Steelers defeated two formerly unbeaten teams in consecutive weeks.
6027  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Why WoW? on: November 05, 2004, 03:38:15 PM
EQ2 it is 6 levels or 75% of the level of the highest group member, whichever is more.  Now that is for getting xp..for being useful.. I would say it depends on how high level the group is.  It also depends on the class.  My experience in EQ2 so far would be about a 4 level difference.
6028  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/3 on: November 04, 2004, 02:38:33 AM
actually, it seems as we learn more about all the characters, quite a few seem to be better off on the island, having nothing to go home to.  Granted no one seems to enjoy the island as much as Locke, I do not see him as being the one who hit Sayid.
6029  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/3 on: November 04, 2004, 02:16:51 AM
I really enjoyed the episode..I wondered if the korean woman was going to give up the fact that she spoke english when the cave in happened.  I am really getting to like Locke.

All that said...my goodness next week looks like it is going to be an intense episode.

6032  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / More SOE BS on: October 27, 2004, 05:27:05 AM
On the group death penalty it has been a non issue for me in beta.  The debt I get from a teammate dying is gone within 15-20 minutes.  I have encountered one or two people who weren't very intelligent, but with some help by the group they learned what they were doing wrong causing deaths.  I have yet to be in a group where someone kept dying repeatedly... even doing dungeons with a full group for a few hours at a time.

All of my grouping so far has been pick up groups.
6033  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / More SOE BS on: October 27, 2004, 01:14:13 AM
How many characters does someone really need?  I have no problem with only having 4 characters.  The death penalty is minor enough that it is a nuissance and nothing more.  Repairing items is very inexpensive... even if you have a bad night it will take 10 deaths to where the items have to be repaired.  To each thier own I suppose.  I have played both, and while WoW is a good game, it is not for me.  If you want to talk about BS... how about the fact that in WoW if I have a friend from australia I can't play with them, not to mention friends from any country other than america which I have quite a few.

6035  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EQ2 bumped to a Nov 8th release? on: October 24, 2004, 04:31:54 PM
Just had a great quest... my hallmark quest to become an assassin.  I had to intercept an Orc Runner for a message, then I had to find an Orc who was looking for a dervish to assassinate his leader so he could be promoted.  I almost screwed up when talking with this orc and had to think on my feet to cover up my error (referred to my leader of the dervishes as a man instead of a woman, he almost found me out to be a spy).  Then he puts a bag over my head and I am taken to a hidden Orc camp.  The place is crawling with large groups of orc guards that are all lvl 40 and would have squashed me.  I had to sneak past them to where my Victim was and assassinate him and get out unseen.  While this isn't a common quest it gives a bit of spice to the standard fair quests that EVERY MMORPG Has.
6036  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EQ2 bumped to a Nov 8th release? on: October 24, 2004, 04:31:02 AM
No offense, but I am sorry the EQ2 you describe is not the EQ2 I have been playing for a few weeks now.  I have yet to grind.. 18 lvls I have not spent any of that just killing to get my next lvl.  I have never had to sit waiting for a group...I put up my lfg, I do some solo questing or searching for collection items.  I watch chat and usually within 15 minutes am in a group.

Performance.. I am running a p4 3.2, 1gb ram, and a 9800 xt 256 mb.  I run at 1600x1200, high detail, no lag at all.  Have been in multigroup battles with no problems.

Player Housing... EQ2 has it as well... Items breaking... have never had an item break... would take 10 deaths without repairing.  My entire set of equipment takes roughly 60 copper pieces to repair.  And nothing breaks... it is just not equipable until you repair.  Quests...there is only so much you can do, WoW and EQ2 use a lot of deliver, kill X, retrieve X quests, but EQ2 also has things like collection quests, quests requiring me to sneak in and out of a location.  Shared EXP debt is miniscule...Even with a group wipeout within 30 minutes the debt is gone.  Or, have a bad night get a lot of debt... guess what you sleep 8 hours and  a large portion of the debt is gone.  Mounts between cities... hrmm DAoC had it before WoW so not like it is unique.

I really am curious as to what EQ2 it is that you have played as it isn't anything like the one I am currently enjoying much more than I did WoW.

Quote
In the last few days, we’ve talked about character traits and enemy tactics and how they help you individualize your character. We’re going to discuss each of the remaining character advancement paths in the coming week, including racial traditions, specialized training, and all-new spells and arts. Each of these areas allow you to make interesting choices to suit your character and play style.

Today, we’ll provide more detail on racial traditions and how they’ll affect your character.

Racial Traditions

Traditions are one of the advancement paths that help you to build a unique identity in EverQuest II. As players learn the background and lore of their chosen race, they begin to unlock certain bonuses. This starts with race-specific titles and leads to a choice of racial abilities. By the time they’ve reached level 50, every character will gain access to four racial traditions to help tailor their character to their preferred play style and distinguish themselves from other members of their race.

Racial traditions take many forms, but are generally activated abilities that can be used on demand to greatly improve your character for a short period of time.

When it's time to choose a new tradition, you will be presented with a list of ten options with detailed explanations of how each choice would affect your character. You can pick any one tradition from the list and enjoy its benefits immediately.

Here are some of the racial traditions -

Barbarian

Teachings of Tundra Jack – Life in the harsh outdoors has increased your powers of observation. By following the Teachings of Tundra Jack, your character enjoys enhanced tracking of prey.
Gnome

Confusing Babble – Gnomes aren’t the most durable denizens of Norrath, so it’s often useful to talk their way out of a bad situation. With a timely burst of perplexing chatter, you’re able to soothe angry creatures and lower their hatred toward you as they stop to figure out what you’re yapping about.
Dark Elf

Shadow Shroud – The world is a dangerous place and life as a dark elf is never easy. By slowing your breathing and freezing in place, you are able to hide and escape detection by most foes.
Erudite

Ward of Glyphs – Years of arcane study have imbued the erudites with an innate defense against magical damage. By steeling your mind, you can call a protective ward into existence and guard yourself against harmful spells.
Dwarf

Vital Provisions – Living in a world of magic has its advantages. Over the centuries as other races focused on developing talents in lesser areas, the dwarves learned an ability that truly matters – summoning Ale.
Half Elf

Dual Breed – The mixed heritage of the half elves gives them some benefits from both their parent races. During a battle, you may concentrate and increase both your stamina and magical power for a period of time.
Halfling

Light on the Feet – As if having naturally good looks and great personality wasn’t enough, halflings also possess other talents. A lifetime of dancing and clean living has made some halflings especially nimble, allowing them to easily dodge an adversary’s blows for a short time.
Next week we will detail our Training system, which allows you to specialize your character by choosing one of your core abilities to enhance.

This is just a small sampling of the types of things that will be done with racial traits... by no means an actual listing of all traits.
6039  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / An extremely detailed preview of EQ2 on: October 23, 2004, 05:08:23 AM
Because it is more needed to cast a summons spell for example... or a conjuration type spell and so on.  It isn't so much the specific skill as it is the type of skill.
6040  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EQ2 bumped to a Nov 8th release? on: October 22, 2004, 05:20:26 PM
I highly doubt this... the thread about it on official beta forums got locked, only dev response is that until Moorgard gives an official date no retailers are correct essentially.
