There is actually a challenge in the first map towards the bottom where you first come into the area. The challenge says something to the effect that Helicopters don't kill people, hurling cars with the helicopter wench does and you have to go out and pick up objects and toss them, it is great.

Personally I thought the comercials overall were lackluster this year. I did appreciate the thank you to the troops commercial. As far as funny the best I thought were the Ameriquest ones.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Help Needed!

Working on a friends machine, everything was going fine. He wanted me to install a new USB 2.0 PCI card, so I cracked open the machine and started working. He asked me if he could see what the RAM looked like, so I popped it out, showed him and popped it back in. Now I turn on the machine, no output to the monitor, and I get one long beep, a pause then one long beep again, then a pause and this goes on and on. I tried installing new RAM to no avail. Any idea what is happening? I am in panic mode here. The system is an HP Pavilion 552W. The motherboard is an Asus P4S-LA, but I can't find a manual for it online anywhere to interpret the beeps, although that is usually a ram issue or so I thought. Please help!

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / AVG 7.0 Free Edition

Quick question to the gurus out there. I am currently using AVG 7.0 Free Edition. Lately I have been having difficulty getting update files to download. I also run Zone Alarm Pro, but as far as I can tell ZA isn't preventing the update from downloading. Does AVG use specific ports, is the download site just swamped at times, etc...?
Any help would be apprectiated, if you need any more info just let me know.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire worth getting?

on: January 25, 2005, 04:21:55 PM

|
You know, I played Arcanum, loved it, encountered very few bugs. I still play TOEE and have never had a single problem with it. I have vampire and play it to death, have yet to encounter a bug and the performance is just fine, running at 1600x1200 max settings. My machine is about a year old now, so not top of the line by any stretch of the imagination.
Is vampire perfect? Far from it, and perhaps my opinion would be different if I encountered some of the bugs that others are having.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / So how is EQ2 holding up?
|
on: January 20, 2005, 06:34:58 PM
|
|
I just recently went back to EQ2 after some time off playing WoW. While I enjoy WoW I also enjoy EQ2. Part of EQ2 tho is that you need to have people to play with to get the most enjoyment out of it, where as WoW can be enjoyed alone.
Levelling is a good bit slower than WoW. My current character has about 2 days /played and is lvl 19. Granted about 10 hours of that has been crafting. In the same time in WoW you can be quite a bit higher level than that, although the cap in WoW is lvl 60 where as EQ2 the cap is 50.
As for classes being wanted in groups... it all depends really. There are people who want the optimal group and so will advertise group lfg class a or class b, instead of looking for healer, looking for dps etc... although to be honest this exists in both WoW and EQ2. My current character is a monk. I can only wear light armor such as leather, so I can not soak damage like a guardian can who wears vanguard (heavier than plate). However I block/parry/riposte/just plain avoid damage quite often. So the difference is that I get hit less often but for more damage per hit than a guardian, but with a small adjustment to healing tactics I can be the MT for a group. The server I am currently on is a lower population server as well which seems to be more friendly to good pick up groups that don't care all too much about some mythical optimal group.
A few other side items to think about...
1.Death Penalty - if you don't like them, then WoW is superior in this regard. While having basically no penalty in WoW is nice, I don't fear dying at all. In EQ2 unless I get on a bad roll, the penalty stings but doesn't hurt. Corpse runs aren't as bad as EQ1 since you have all of your gear. Most dungeons allow you to recover your corpse at the door instead of trying to fight back in for it. For the most part death is very easy to avoid in EQ2 while outdoors, but not so much indoors.
2.Crafting - Both games have good crafting systems, however the importance of crafting is different. In EQ2, crafted items will always be superior to dropped. The best items in the game will be crafted from incredibly rare drops from raid mobs. Crafting in WoW is nice, but most drops are better. WoW crafting is much easier to do, less time consuming.
3.Guilds - EQ2 has some very nice guild features that come with levelling up the guild. Reduced cost of mounts, guild raids, access to better housing etc... in WoW a guild is really just a big chat channel and easy way to get groups.
4.Cash Flow - in EQ2 money is a pain in the ass to come across until mid to high levels. WoW, you feel rich very early on. Requires very different style of play as you have to be very tight fisted with spending in EQ2.
5.Quests - I think it is pretty much a wash here, both games have a metric ton of quests of all different kinds. WoW quests tend to hold your hand and show you every step so not frustrating, EQ2 tends to want you to find more out on your own and quest clues can sometimes be quite cryptic. Really depends on preference as to which you will like better in this regard.
I am trying to keep up playing both, but it isn't going to last. Soon I will be deciding for sure between one or the other and am not positive which it will be.

You are fined for killing innocents, such as civilians and press. I got fined 25,000 for running over a civilian when the press were present. Dumb ass man walked right in front of my tank... now tell me how the hell is a tank supposed to stop on a dime...so I just plowed em down. No big deal.. I sold the tank to the russians and hijacked another vehicle or two and it paid for itself.

Quick question... . . .
*spoiler* After collecting enough bounty items I unlocked a cheat to turn into a russian maffia "heavy". Does anyone know how to change back, and will that allow me to go into russian controlled territory without being attacked? *end spoiler*
. . .
Overall I am really loving this game. It has sucked me in. I am really not a fan of the GTA series as they always bored me, but not this game. I really wish they had put in a coop 2 player. A friend was over and we were saying how fun it would be having one driving other manning the gun. Does anyone know if a PC version is planned...? If so I hope they put something like this in, would be a blast.

Got this yesterday at EB for $35. I didn't have any trade ins... since I am a former manager I asked if they had any cheap PS2/XB/GC preowned games that weren't exlcuded... so they looked it up for me. Bought the two games for $10, then traded them right back in to get the deal, so $24.99 + the $10 I had just spent. Not a bad deal at all... you may want to ask in your local store about doing this...most stores will help you out to do this as it boosts thier trade ins and preowned sales, something which is highly looked at within the company.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EB Games Price gouging ??
|
on: January 14, 2005, 07:00:42 AM
|
|
When I managed an EB store, preorders did not actually gurantee a price. Putting $5 down on a game just was supposed to gurantee a copy. If the price goes up or down, when you pick up the game you pay that price...now, if I was short on a game to fill all my preorders, when more came in they were to be set aside for 48 hours and the customer was called to pick up the game. If the customer did not show then thier copy went for sale to general public. After this, any future shipments those customers would not be called, if they failed to show the first time. My guess as to where the games came from....EB has many many stores. I am guessing that they performed an overstock recall, where corporate tells stores to send back all copies of a game that you have above and beyond a set amount. So lets say they tell stores to keep 4 copies on hand and they have 10, 6 get sent back. My guess is that these newly discovered copies were actually from an overstock of stores that did not sell thier stock for one reason or another. As for not fulfilling current customer orders... I would have to see proof. They can charge whatever they want for the game however. In retail for non essential items there is no such thing as price gouging. If people are willing to pay $150 for something, why sell it for $80. EB is not denying you anything. If you want to pay $80, good luck finding it. If you want the CE then you will pay what is being charged. Manufacturers can set suggested retail, but it is just that, suggested. There were some rare cases in the past where manufacturers informed EB that no more of an item would be made available and the company has cancelled preorders before.

I myself also have DDR for XB. I got started with it back on PS1... sadly I don't think any version has been as good as the original for PS1. My wife and I were using to to exercise but then life interrupted that. I enjoy it quite a lot, and if you are bored some day, check and see if your mall has an arcade machine. Sometimes I swing by and watch these insane kids preparing for tournaments (my mall has monthly tournaments for money prizes). Thier feet are moving so fast I would have a heart attack trying. I also had a friend in college who was able to do the mode where you dance on two pads at the same time.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / SOE to players: Want more content? Cough it up...

Aye most MMORPG's have seperate teams for ongoing maintenance and expansion type content. Personally I played EQ2 up until about 2 weeks ago. I am not playing now as I got hooked on WoW, but that said I never encountered a single bug aside from a memory leak in EQ2. Actually I have encountered many bugs and technical problems with WoW, much moreso than EQ2.

I guess my problem is that if these servers that were brought down are the busiest and have been having problems, they should have either been upgraded by now or they should offer a transfer off. Or god forbid thier techs stay all night and do the emergency maintenance at the wee hours of the night.
Gedd, I did try alt-f4 and it did nothing unfortunately. Killing the .exe worked it is just a pain to do. If I am in an inn, there is no way I am in combat, the game should let me quit.
