I would recommend anyone who visits OO, stay out of EBG.  Someone is posting Tubgirl directly into random topics, not linking but putting it right in the post...I was unfortunate enough to click on a post that was affected by this.  May be best to just avoid those forums for a bit.  The more and more problems they have with vulgar PM's and now this... sheesh.  User doing this is named Gator Fan.

This just in... Pittsburgh sends a bag of pucks to chicago to secure Jocelyn Thibault.

Since the NHL has to approve any trade, I am guessing this isn't gonna change like the signing of Burke did.

Well, it depends on the rule changes.  If they enforce it, then the devils defense becomes very suspect if they can't clutch and grab!

 biggrin

Kidding aside, the pens defense is suspect at best.  I think the pens are going to depend on good puck control in the offensive zone to cover for the week defense like they did in the puck years.  I still wish they had signed Foote or Aucoin.

Semaj, the sabers may be just fine playing the waiting game.  There are going to be some teams in trouble when they realise that thier RFA's aren't going to sign the qualifying offers... such as Philly and Anaheim.  They are both at or over the cap at this point with players still needing to be signed.  By waiting Buffalo may be able to get some decent talent for next to nothing (ie..future considerations) like LA did with JR.

And devil... feel free to line up your 9 defensemen... put em all together and you have maybe 4 good defensemen heh.  I'll do you a favor and design a walker on ice skates for good ole Scott Stevens.

LOVE the Hockey talk over here!! I was over at OO to get my fix as well. We should really make an effort to keep some hockey talk going on over here!

As for the Pens: I agree with you Arkon. Burke might be better suited to groom MAF like he probably accidentally did with Brodeur. Good call! If you need some D, we have NINE so make Lou an offer....please, someone make him an offer!!

Back to Bertuzzi. I think the whole 'NHL fresh start' that's going on might have something to do with letting him back. Clean slate for the game and everyon involved. I'm not saying it's right but just a thought.

Well, the Burke deal somehow fell through....guess we are now going after CuJo, although a few other names have been tossed out....Not sure I really want any of the defensemen you have left up in Jersey heh....although I wouldn't mind Rafalski....

As for Bertuzzi...I am torn on this.  I think the situation is going to need to be closely monitored as he could easily put egg on the face of the NHL if he gets out of hand again.

I'm crossing my fingers hoping to get the Center Ice package this year. This is going to be an interesting year... rule changes, players all over the place, I'm very excited right now.

The only rule change I'm not too thrilled about is the shootout. I think since the NHL made so many changes to open up the offense and scoring, they should've held off on the shootouts until another year to see if these changes cut down on tie games.

I'm glad the touch-up offsides is back in place. I never understood why they got rid of that in the first place.

Personally I am excited by the shootout... no more ties in regular season.  4 on 4, then 3 on 3.... I am guessing most games won't ever get to the shootout to begin with, but if they do then we get a resolution in exciting fashion.  Looking at the redistribution of talent, the proposed super crackdown on all forms of obstruction, 4 on 4 and 3 on 3 will be incredibly fast paced and tons of scoring chances I think.

Oh well... the season can't start soon enough...still pissed that Jersey gets to see the first NHL game of Crosby and the Pens.

5766  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 to launch on November 4th at $299.99 per Wal-Mart on: August 10, 2005, 11:56:26 AM
I own all of the consoles...my gamecube I own solely for the Tales game that came out on it...no desire to play anything else nintendo...was not a fan of the new mario, nor the new Zelda, nor the metroids.  RE4 was OK, but never been a big fan of them due to the control scheme.  Super Smash brothers was ok, but unless the game is online, I play alone...so Super Smash Brothers got boring very quickly.  I also have Phantasy Star Online for GC, but only played for a month or so when I realised how ridiculous it would be to try and find a broadband adapter.

For me personally I prefer my XBOX for many reasons.  Live gives me a way to play alot of my games online with other people.  The games are more geared towards my liking.  While GC has some of these games due to multiplatform releases, I would rather play them on my XBOX with Live play, a controller I like (I abhor the GC controller), and generally crisper graphics.

In the next gen console wars I will be getting a 360 day one, and perhaps a revolution down the road but not at release.  I am not excited or hyped up for the revolution but in the back of my mind hoping that nintendo can get back to the days of NES and SNES with great gameplay in a variety of genres with decent 3rd party support.

(on an aside....)

Someone said that most would be getting Oblivion on the PC... I think that perhaps from hardcore gamers on forums like this (which honetly represents a small % of total gamers) that may be true... but I think this time Oblivion will sell considerably more on the 360 than the PC version will.

5768  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The "tuzz" is reinstated! ... and other NHL news on: August 09, 2005, 08:11:44 PM
Well, looks like CuJo is out.  TSN is reporting that the Pens signed Burke to a 2 year, 3M contract.  While I don't think Burke is as good of a goaltender as CuJo, I think he will be infantely better as a mentor to MAF.  I don't think CuJo would have wanted to come in to groom the real #1 man in net for the Pens most likely next year.  I still think we need to sign another player or two.  I would like to see a guy like Yanic Perrault (I apologize if I butchered his name), who could come in and give a tremendous two way game as well as dominate on face offs.  We could also use a solid stay at home D-Man.  Doesn't need to be a big hitter, just consistent in his own end.  That said I think the Pens are going to try and return to the days of the cup years where defense be damned they still won by sheer offensive power.  I don't think this team is nearly as potent on offense as the cup years, they took a huge step by signing gonchar to give them that Larry Murphy/Paul Coffey type player.  Palfy will also thrive  in Pittsburgh and could easily hit 40 goals this season.  Oh well, time to head home from work....I can't wait for the season to start.
5769  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The "tuzz" is reinstated! ... and other NHL news on: August 09, 2005, 11:36:21 AM
Quite honestly, as a Pens season ticket holder, I will have to reserve judgement until I see the lineup come day 1.  There are still some free agents that they are going after.  If I had to speculate at the current time I see the pens ending up a number 5 or 6 seed at best and making it to the second round before getting knocked out of the playoffs.  Getting Malkin and Morozov over here would be tremendous as well.  Regardless of where the Pens finish I think they are going to be infinately improved over the last three season.

I know this is an age old debate... but for years games have been priced at the same $50 despite rising development costs.  A jump to $60 isn't really all that bad.  What it will do is cause me to buy less games day 1, but not really buy less games overall.

Pretty sure Dumbledore is dead.  I think Snape is still good.  To me Dumbledore knew what was coming, and my guess is that this is what the argument was about between D and Snape that Hagrid noticed going on.  Dumbledore was pleading for Snape to kill him, not to spare him.  I am pretty well convinced that RAB was indeed Regulus.  I enjoyed the book, and am excited to see what book 7 holds.
5778  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 releases 12th live update on: July 24, 2005, 05:35:06 PM
LE, first off, SK's are very powerful, not sure where you get that they are ultra-gimp.  While the commonlands is a bit bland at first glance, with a bit of exploring around there is a lot there.  I am curious in a grassland/savanah what other colors would one use?

Wailing Caverns...while it starts out as a cavern develops into much more when you get deeper into the dungeon.

Fallen Gate which is the ruins of neriak does have all those wild colors you remember from the city in EQ1.  The dungeon is huge.  There is one particular room that you enter which fills with a fog that will sometimes form into a very powerful ghost when you touch the fog.  Deep down in is the old arena full of ogres.  It may seem shallow on the surface to you because you only explored the surface of it.

Try going to Nektulos forest and see how creepy it is there.  Try making a run through blackburrow.  Head to the enchanted lands and see rivervale.  The world is actually very alive and full of soul, but you to each thier own.

Back to the topic at hand, I am finding alot of the changes this patch to be very nice.  The increased quest journal is great, and yet I still have a full journal, and being able to sort by my current zone just rocks.  They have improved the guild system even more, making an already incredibly deep guild system deeper/better.  I am also glad to see they removed the access quests for some intermediate zones.  The new artisan quests rock.  All in all a very solid patch.

Bah, you never know what sort of amazing things the pens may pull out this year.  Alot depends on who is brought in from the FA frenzy.  A few key acquisitions and the pens could make some heads turn this year.  Now, will they best Detroit in the standings?  Only time will tell... but Lemieux is pushing hard for some key people to be brought in to get the cup back before he has to retire for good.
5782  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Pittsburgh Welcome Back Hockey! on: July 22, 2005, 09:21:39 PM
As a season ticket holder I nearly pissed myself when it was announced that the Pens got #1 overall.  I personally think that season ticket sales are gonna skyrocket if the team announces that crosby will be jumping straight to the NHL.  This alone could be enough to convince the powers that be in PA to find a way, any way to get a new f'in arena in Pittsburgh. Even with our poor attendance in 2003, a study showed that pittsburgh lost out on 1.6 million direct tax dollars and something insane like 84 million in total revenue for all area businesses/hotels with the cancelling of the season.  I am excited to see what key free agents the pens pursue... oh and suprise suprise... the pens website is getting hammered.

5784  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 releases 12th live update on: July 22, 2005, 11:03:38 AM
Well, I think you would enjoy the predator and rogue classes as well as the brawler/warrior classes.  The beserker may fit you well although I suspect a zerker nerf coming soon due to combat balancing.  Bards are good as well although they are a bit more support oriented with all of thier songs.... but they are fairly easy to play....will respond more once I get to work.

Ok...at work now.  All scout classes begin the game with the ability to dual wield.  Warriors and Brawlers also get the ability to dual wield, SK's and Paladins do not.  Of the scout classes both rogues and predators do excellent damage, but in different ways.  Predators are more heavily dependent on stealth for thier damage (well assassins are, not played a ranger who gets much more in the way of great range damage).  So due to the stealth requirement on many attacks they get some nice in combat stealth abilities and an attack that will stealth you after you hit so you can follow up with a stealthed attack.  Rogues on the other hand are positional based, meaning from behind or in front etc...I would say that both rogue and predator damage are pretty equal, and very good.  Also both rogues and predators begining at lvl 10 can use poisons to further augment thier damage.  That said a scouts damage will never truly rival a mages.  However scouts get some utility to make up for this in evac. and being able to disarm traps.

Guardians and beserkers are your standard tanks.  Guardians are more built around defense with the skills they get and are regarded as being the best at holding aggro.  Beserkers are in the same class as guardians, so get heavy armor but do much better damage at the expense of defensive skills and some taunting ability (although the higher damage output makes up for it usually).  Monks and Bruisers wear light armor only, but can do some great damage and have a very high avoidance rate.  However it is pretty rare to see a monk or bruiser as a main tank.  Due to high avoidance but low mitigation, many groups have difficulty operating with a monk as MT.  It is doable but not easy.  Having a shaman makes it much easier to have a monk MT.

Hope this helps some.
5785  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 releases 12th live update on: July 21, 2005, 08:46:09 PM
You have 4 Archetypes...Fighter, Scout, Mage and Priest.  At lvl 10 you perform a quest and choose your class.  Fighters can go Warrior, Crusader or Brawler, Scouts can go Bard, Predator, Rogue...Priests can go Cleric, Druid, Shaman, and Mages can go Enchanter, Summoner or Sorceror (may be off on a few names).  At lvl 20 you then choose your sub class which breaks it down even further.  Some subclasses are only available to freeport/qeynos based characters.  For example if you go predator, a freeport predator becomes an assassin, a qeyons predator becomes a ranger.

What sort of playstyle do you enjoy?  All classes/subclasses are able to solo as well as perfrom a basic group function, some just do them differently, for example for priests....clerics (templars/inquisitors) do powerful direct/instant heals, druids excell at HOT/Regen type spells and shamans excell at Wards (prevent X damage).  Certain subclasses pair better than others.  For example a monk/mystic combo can be very powerful since monks have high avoidance, a ward works well to prevent the large burst damage when a hit gets through.  However a guardian (pure tank, most defensive fighter class) is better paired usually with a cleric or druid as the heals are more efficient over the long run since a guardian takes lots of small hits.

I have yet to really play a gimp class, and all have been very fun.  Feel free to ask any other questions, I am sure we can answer for ya.

5788  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW Dupe, rumors of a rollback of up to 7 days on: July 19, 2005, 01:42:15 PM
Here is the problem with just tracking the duped items and getting rid of them.  Lets say a duped rare is up for sale and Player A buys the duped item.  (remember while items may have an ID to track, gold does not).  Player A then decides that they are going to disenchant the duped item and gets 4 items in return, which player A then sells to players B,C,D,E.  Then players B,C,D,E in turn create enchantments and sell these enchantments to players F,G,H,I.  Now... how exactly do you take this out of the economy and then reimburse all of these players.  The other thing to consider is that gold was also duped, not just items from my understanding.  This gold can not be taken out of the economy now that it is in.  The only real way to correct this/the economy is via a rollback.  That said I have completed a lot over the past few days, including playing the AH to earn money for a mount.  If there is a rollback and I lose this... well then I am gone.  I have been on the fence with WoW as of late, this would just be the proverbial straw that breaks the camels back.

For me, when I get sucked into the story like I have with all the Harry Potter books, I can't wait to find out what happens next.  Nothing else in the world exists at this point.  My actual time spent reading was closer to 7 hours when taking into account lunch/dinner etc...

I tend to remember alot of the book and don't feel I am reading all that fast.  I can't imagine trying to take my time, that would be like watching a movie in 15 minute segments... why would I want to do that.  Dumbledore is not the half blood prince BTW.

Well I started the book at roughly 8AM this morning, with a few hours worth of interuptions I managed to finish the book at roughly 7PM.  Very very good, but now the waiting game begins for the final book of the series.

Edit:  The worst part is while my wife and I bought two copies it will be a few days before she finishes, so I can't talk about it at all until then.

I really don't know who is going to die, nor do I want to guess.  I was so sad when Black "died" at the end of book 5.  I got really attached to his character and his interaction with Harry.  I can see your point about Dumbledore and it makes sense... Although I can also see something happening to Hagrid due to his close relationship with Harry.  As for the half-blood prince... isn't hagrid a half blood (giant/human)?
