Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 Veterans I need your input!

Enchanters are invaluable in my opinion. Crowd Control is very different from EQ1 in that you don't pull a group of 5 then mez all but 1. Usually an enchanter can only mez 1 to 2 adds (if I recall correctly), but enchanters do so much more to make a battle go smoothly. As far as I am concerned I will take an enchanter in my group any day of the week. Soloing may be a bit tough for an enchanter as thier damage output is low compared to a sorceror and summoner, but still very good nonetheless.

Well to be honest it comes down to style, and how you want to solo. Monk/Guardian/Paladin/Berserker are all very capable soloers (only fighter classes I have experience with currently). Of them all Paladin dies the least but generally takes the longest to kill anything.
Sorcerors and Summoners are both very solo friendly, sorceror kills quickly with incredibly high damage spells(typical root & nuke strategy), while the Summoner applies DOT's and lets thier pet tank.
Healers are all very solo friendly.
Scouts while they can be solo friendly were the most difficult for me personally to solo with.
Perhaps you can give us an idea of your playstyle, what you enjoy etc...

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW's Patch Notes

I am not sure on the number 6... however SOE just added thier 4th major live update to EQ2. There has been very few if any patch, then repatch because of first patch situations that have come up. A lot of what has been done has been balancing of characters, including some pretty incredible buffing up to casters. They have added multiple zones, solo instances, group instances, increased solo xp twice, added a mentoring system, removed many reuse timers on failed instances, reduced group xp debt. Overall they have listened to thier customers and are making the game that was already great that much better. They have had a test server running since day one as well in order to test thier patches. Coming the end of this month the first adventure pack will be released as well. I am not here to put down Blizzard they are very succesful and have a tremendous track record, but I will defend SOE as they are doing a magnificent job with EQ2. I don't care about the past for SOE as they have proven to me that they are not the same as when they worked on EQ1/SWG.

Controller can be a lot of fun, but require a ton of patience to play. Scrappers do some insane damage but truly are paper tanks in most situations. Blasters are even better at dealing damage then a scrapper, but are even more frail. I would personally not start a controller if you will be playing solo most of the time.. while it is possible to solo, it is very slow. Blaster is probably the fastest soloer. Tanker is a very good soloer, but not as fast at killing as a scrapper or blaster, but damn near impossible to die.

Being from Pittsburgh, the Penguins are one of the few teams who lose less money while not operating then they would if a season started. They desperately need a new arena to be viable. They have a lot of good young talent in their system to be a good team in a few years and there is a decent fanbase still left in town, if the tickets weren't so darn expensive for old beat up seats.

You may have seen a walking ham sandwhich, however you would have then also killed what I would speculate was the mother of the baby boar. While the meat would be nice they should focus more on fishing and other more easily renewable food sources, such as the garden that the korean woman is working on.

The whisper was saying It All Comes Around, which is what Duckett said right before dying once Sawyer realised he had been set up. I loved Hurley when he was talking about Ethan and what would happen.

I was grounded, machine was disconnected from power source. No ESD... I did find out from the owner of the machine that there were past problems with the motherboard (PS/2 ports are fried). I took the machine to an old teacher of mine who is a wiz with machines and he confirmed that the memory slots were caput so I am replacing the Mobo, which is now even more of a headache. Some of the connectors HP uses are proprietary and will not work with the new mobo so I have to replace them. HP had the power switch, HDD Led and Power Led all wired to one connector and the pins on the old mobo were all in a row. The new mobo has the pins in a different configuration, and I am not sure how to remedy this. I also had to get a 3 pin Y connector in order to hook all the fans up as the new mobo only has 2 fan connectors and the machine has 3 fans. Lastly the lead that connects the 2 USB ports up front has a connector on it that is different than what the new mobo uses so might have to replace that as well.

The clubs are a cakewalk, as they should be, they are all businessmen. The diamonds ramp up th difficulty quite a bit. Also starting with the diamonds many more faction missions have you going against another faction other than the NK.

You know, if someone hung me from the end of a rope and I somehow managed to live... I wouldn't beat them, I wouldn't interrogate them, I would kill them, no questions asked. Ethan killed/nearly killed charlie, and took away the one thing that charlie loved on the island. I don't see charlies actions as being irrational.

Very good review, I agree with much of it. I personally find the camera to be a bit more annoying than you let on to while in third person, enough so to play a majority of the time in first person. The lack of audible music at times is odd, but the sound effects are just great. The boombats sound like donnie from the Wild Thornberries, and chippunks are hilarious. It is fun to wander in town listening to folks talk, then headbutt em, collect some money and watch them run in fear.

There is actually a challenge in the first map towards the bottom where you first come into the area. The challenge says something to the effect that Helicopters don't kill people, hurling cars with the helicopter wench does and you have to go out and pick up objects and toss them, it is great.

Working on a friends machine, everything was going fine. He wanted me to install a new USB 2.0 PCI card, so I cracked open the machine and started working. He asked me if he could see what the RAM looked like, so I popped it out, showed him and popped it back in. Now I turn on the machine, no output to the monitor, and I get one long beep, a pause then one long beep again, then a pause and this goes on and on. I tried installing new RAM to no avail. Any idea what is happening? I am in panic mode here. The system is an HP Pavilion 552W. The motherboard is an Asus P4S-LA, but I can't find a manual for it online anywhere to interpret the beeps, although that is usually a ram issue or so I thought. Please help!

Quick question to the gurus out there. I am currently using AVG 7.0 Free Edition. Lately I have been having difficulty getting update files to download. I also run Zone Alarm Pro, but as far as I can tell ZA isn't preventing the update from downloading. Does AVG use specific ports, is the download site just swamped at times, etc...?
Any help would be apprectiated, if you need any more info just let me know.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire worth getting?

on: January 25, 2005, 04:21:55 PM

You know, I played Arcanum, loved it, encountered very few bugs. I still play TOEE and have never had a single problem with it. I have vampire and play it to death, have yet to encounter a bug and the performance is just fine, running at 1600x1200 max settings. My machine is about a year old now, so not top of the line by any stretch of the imagination.
Is vampire perfect? Far from it, and perhaps my opinion would be different if I encountered some of the bugs that others are having.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / So how is EQ2 holding up?
|
on: January 20, 2005, 06:34:58 PM
|
|
I just recently went back to EQ2 after some time off playing WoW. While I enjoy WoW I also enjoy EQ2. Part of EQ2 tho is that you need to have people to play with to get the most enjoyment out of it, where as WoW can be enjoyed alone.
Levelling is a good bit slower than WoW. My current character has about 2 days /played and is lvl 19. Granted about 10 hours of that has been crafting. In the same time in WoW you can be quite a bit higher level than that, although the cap in WoW is lvl 60 where as EQ2 the cap is 50.
As for classes being wanted in groups... it all depends really. There are people who want the optimal group and so will advertise group lfg class a or class b, instead of looking for healer, looking for dps etc... although to be honest this exists in both WoW and EQ2. My current character is a monk. I can only wear light armor such as leather, so I can not soak damage like a guardian can who wears vanguard (heavier than plate). However I block/parry/riposte/just plain avoid damage quite often. So the difference is that I get hit less often but for more damage per hit than a guardian, but with a small adjustment to healing tactics I can be the MT for a group. The server I am currently on is a lower population server as well which seems to be more friendly to good pick up groups that don't care all too much about some mythical optimal group.
A few other side items to think about...
1.Death Penalty - if you don't like them, then WoW is superior in this regard. While having basically no penalty in WoW is nice, I don't fear dying at all. In EQ2 unless I get on a bad roll, the penalty stings but doesn't hurt. Corpse runs aren't as bad as EQ1 since you have all of your gear. Most dungeons allow you to recover your corpse at the door instead of trying to fight back in for it. For the most part death is very easy to avoid in EQ2 while outdoors, but not so much indoors.
2.Crafting - Both games have good crafting systems, however the importance of crafting is different. In EQ2, crafted items will always be superior to dropped. The best items in the game will be crafted from incredibly rare drops from raid mobs. Crafting in WoW is nice, but most drops are better. WoW crafting is much easier to do, less time consuming.
3.Guilds - EQ2 has some very nice guild features that come with levelling up the guild. Reduced cost of mounts, guild raids, access to better housing etc... in WoW a guild is really just a big chat channel and easy way to get groups.
4.Cash Flow - in EQ2 money is a pain in the ass to come across until mid to high levels. WoW, you feel rich very early on. Requires very different style of play as you have to be very tight fisted with spending in EQ2.
5.Quests - I think it is pretty much a wash here, both games have a metric ton of quests of all different kinds. WoW quests tend to hold your hand and show you every step so not frustrating, EQ2 tends to want you to find more out on your own and quest clues can sometimes be quite cryptic. Really depends on preference as to which you will like better in this regard.
I am trying to keep up playing both, but it isn't going to last. Soon I will be deciding for sure between one or the other and am not positive which it will be.
