5721  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 23, 2005, 11:42:56 AM
I am loving this game, everything else has gone on the back burner because of it.  I have two partys going, one with a nature mage and one with a sword and board tank.  The nature mage is fun but nothing compared to my tank.  And yes he really is a tank, his armor is insane as I am pumping up his shield skill, toughness and fortitude.

If the stupid UI and fonts scaled with the screen resolution (like pretty much any other recent game), these resolutions would actually be useful... as it is though, things are WAY too small at 1600x1200 on my 21" LCD.

Odd, I have no issues whatsoever with the UI or Fonts running at 1600x1200 on my 21" LCD.  Looks quite nice actually

5725  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion no longer a launch day title (XBox 360) on: August 22, 2005, 06:42:35 PM
Yeah and of course we all know that EB is the GOD of launch dates.... give me a break.  As a former manager of EB, our dates were wrong on many occasions.  Seeing as we also don't actually have an official date for the system I would take this with a grain of salt.

To get 1600x1200 go to the DS2 folder in all programs from the start menu, there is a video config exe that allows you to set to 1600x1200.

I agree wholeheartedly. It's moms and dads buying the units in large part and they are clueless.  $300 units should sell well.  In addition, forget about the clueless factor, $400 is a **lot** of money.  A lot.  Most families are not going to have $400+ dollars do spend on a console.

Again, again, bottom line, let's assume 70% of the units sold are the $400 360s (I think that's a very high percentage,,, but the sake of argument), any developer wanting to make the hard drive a fundamental functional point of their game is going to realize that they have eliminated 30% of their 360 audience.  Not gonna happen.

Quote from: "Gratch"
I still wonder about the percentage of $400 vs. $300 units that will be sold.  I have the feeling that the $300 units will sell far greater than MS expects (unless they manufacture a shortage).   Keep in mind that we (the avid, well-informed gamers) are probably in the minority when it comes to those buying the system.  Sure, none of us would even consider buying the non-HD version, but soccer mom buying an X-mas present at Wal-Mart is going to buy the cheaper one.  Somehow I doubt that the avid:casual purchaser ratio is 80:20.

As a former manager for EB this is shaping up to be interesting.  Microsoft will most likely manufacture a shortage of the $300 units, which is what EB's will want to sell.  Retail stores make a killer off of accessories, not systems, so from a business perspective it makes sense....however for long term they are better to sell the $400 unit to get repeat business once these moms and dads realise that the EB guy saved them from coming back the week after christmas to buy a bunch of extras.

Also....$400 is nothing at christmas time.  It was not uncommon last year and the year before when the PS2 and XB were already out to have 8 to 9 $500 - $600 system sales to parents buying the system, accessories and games.

Well written article KD.  I just can't wait to get my 360.  BTW in case anyone was wondering, all preorders at EB were converted to the $399 bundle not the $299 bundle.

NHL reaches cable deal with Comcast after ESPN declines to match agreement

posted August 18 @ 1:14, EST

NEW YORK (AP) - NHL games will air on Outdoor Life Network for at least the next two seasons.

The league finalized a two-year deal with Comcast Corp. - the owner of OLN - late Wednesday night after ESPN declined to match the agreement that will pay the NHL $65 million US this season and $70 million in 2006-07. The agreement between Comcast and the NHL was approved by the league's board of governors last week. ESPN, which resumed regular broadcast of NHL games in 1992, had until Wednesday night to match the contract but decided to pass.

"Over the years, thousands of great NHL moments were presented to our fans through the lenses of ESPN cameras," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "ESPN was a supportive partner, and both the National Hockey League and ESPN enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. We wish ESPN continued success."

The new deal can be extended up to six years. For the 2007-08 season, Comcast would pay the NHL $72.5 million but that number could go higher based on contingencies.

OLN, best known for providing live coverage of the Tour de France, will show between 58 and 78 regular-season games, as well as conference quarter-finals and the entire conference finals - with the exception of some weekend windows that could move games to NBC in both playoff rounds.

OLN will show Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup final before NBC takes over for the remainder of the series.

The deal with Comcast goes beyond just television rights. Comcast will bring the NHL Network to cable systems in the United States, and provide on-demand game broadcasts and computer streaming of live games.

This is the second time in recent months that ESPN has declined a deal with the NHL. In June, ESPN passed on a $60-million option under the previous contract. The network tried to retain the rights for less money in talks with the league.

ESPN contended that the value of NHL games had dropped substantially following the lockout that wiped out all of last season.

"We worked very hard to build and sustain our relationship with the league and would have liked to continue," George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports said in a statement late Wednesday night. "However, given the prolonged work stoppage and the league's TV ratings history, no financial model even remotely supports the contract terms offered. We wish the NHL all the best."

The NHL will begin a two-year deal with NBC for over-the-air broadcasts beginning with the upcoming season. That is a profit-sharing arrangement, a deal similar to what the network has with the Arena Football League and the National Lacrosse League in which it pays no rights fee to televise games.

Well they had until midnight last night to match the offer by comcast and they did not match it... the rights became an UFA at that point from my understanding.

Supposedly ESPN has turned down the NHL.  Have heard some rumors on local radio that Comcast is paying 200M for a 3 year deal with incentives for bonus money.

I have no problems with this...I was going to be buying a headset, the media remote and the HD cables.  I want the hard drive so for me it is actually a savings to be able to buy the bundle at $399.  I will not be cancelling my preorder.

Curiously... I don't recall MS ever saying what the price would be, rather fan sites speculated... how does this make them deceptive?

True devil, however with the other guys on the ice are you willing to risk taking a shot at lemieux and leaving two other players wide open?  Mario is very adept on the PP playing on the left boards most of the time.  One pass turns your gamble into a goal.  Granted it is a damned if you do damned if you don't.  If you sit back on Lemieux he just makes you look silly.  The biggest reason I wouldn't want him on the point is that he doesn't have to speed to get back if he had to break up a shorthanded chance.

On the topic of defense... I think the pens are going to give the time to the young guys like Orpik, Whitney and Scuderi to go along with Gonchar, Tarnstrom and Jackman.  They will depend on puck possesion/control to help out the defense.

This just in... Penguins sign John Leclair...

While leclair is up there in years, I am just in shock.  Big question... who do you put on your number 1 powerplay?

Leclair - Lemieux - Recchi
   Tarnstrom - Gonchar

and a number 2 pp of...

? - Crosby - Palfy
  Jackman - ?

I am guessing they will use Malone on the PP or Koltsoz, and perhaps Whitney on the point.  Or is Recchi on your 2nd unit and put crosby or palfy on the #1 unit... all I can say is that on paper the pens PP will be very intimidating and will easily rival the PP of the early 90's.

I thought so as well, until I read something a little while ago where the devs said the Xbox 360 version would look and play better than the PC version.

Look better, probably. Play better? I don't know. IMO, mouse + keyboard > console controller.

Of course, it all depends on how much longer it will take for the PC version to come out. If they are released on the same day (which I somehow doubt), I'll go for the PC version. If the PC version will be more than a month after the X-Box release comes out, I suppose it will all depend on how the forum effect hits me.

Curiously... in a game like Oblivion, why exactly would you need a keyboard and mouse... an RTS I can understand.  If the system is designed with a controller in mind it will work just fine.

Starshifter, you touched on a good point of the upcoming season... the schedule/rivalries.  The Pens play the flyers at home on December 23rd... I can't wait, and that will be the 4th game with the flyers at that point... they have a home and home with them in November.  Unfortunately the pens don't have any home and homes with the caps.

Any truth to the NHL thinking of going back to the old divisions?  Ie.. the Patrick, Norris, Adams and Smythe divisions?

Pens - My home team I predict making it to the second round of the playoffs before being knocked out.

Devils - Tough to say... depends on the rule crackdown and what forwards they get signed - will make the playoffs, but not sure how far in they will go.

Honestly Edmonton and Calgary both are looking good, and depending on how grahme and burke play in tampa, the bolts could make it back to the cup again...even with loosing Khabi.

The flyers, while looking decent on paper are gonna have it rough I think.  They lost thier top 6 scorers from last season and really only picked up one scoring threat in Forsberg.  Hatcher is going to have a tough time in the new NHL I think as he is a bit on the slow side and relied alot on clutching/hooking.

Honestly it is so much more open to good competition that just about every team, outside of the caps and sabres and rangers have a shot at the playoffs in my opinion.  That said there is still alot of time for moves, which I cans ee the rangers and sabres doing, the caps however are gonna be hard pressed to get to the salary cap minimum.

Crimson Skies 2 would rock.  Is there any news of a new Mech game for 360?  Does anyone know if my Steel Battalion controller will be useable/used on the 360?

Oh, and did everyone see the screenshots that showed a PSP connected to the 360?  I am amazed they built in the ability to connect competitors devices like that.  I wonder if this has any copyright/legal ramifications.

Some other games I would love to see sequals for on the 360

--Mechassault (but go back to the mechwarrior format and let me customize my mechs damnit... the 360 has to be powerful enough and has a hard drive.)
--Forza... give me even more Forza goodness.

And finally give us more RPG's... crank em out, they will sell systems.
