I'm starting to look at them as a chore.  Hopefully they mix it up a bit soon, otherwise it's turning into '<sigh> 3 more Big Daddies to kill on this level<sigh>'.

Actually, the pistol is pretty deadly with the ammo and damage upgrade.  You'll use it more than the machinegune when you need accurate fire.  Plus it'll kill even some late game splicers with one shot with anti-personnel rounds.  The armor piercing rounds will also down a security drone in one shot.

Well, I use other weapons
Spoiler for Hiden:
the crossbow
for my one-shot needs, especially with the weapon upgrades
Spoiler for Hiden:
basically unlimited ammo, along with an added damage increase - it's rare when I don't one-shot somebody.
And you blow up your drones? Man... I use those turrets and cameras to my advantage (and one heck of an advantage at that). biggrin

I too was surprised how scary it is.  I am enjoying it but only in small doses.

Unfortunately they also seem to have gone for "gore" scares which is a bit annoying.  I am almost bored with the shear number of bodies ripped in half strewn all over.  I wish they would have toned that down and kept the psychological terror.

What you say about being bored with the number of mutilated bodies can be apply to psychological scares as well. A lot of games that try to do this become very predictable and as a result the scare-factor drops considerably. Its like how you'll be running down a dark hallway and you hear something that implies you may be in danger, but nothing happens. It gets to a point where you know nothing is going to happen and you keep going. I remember first experiencing this desensitization towards psychological scares in Silent Hill 2.

I'm already there with Bioshock...Not that far in and already the "jump" factor is gone. Still a good game, and a fun experience.

After deleting the demo I decided to re-download it and try again to see why it was not grabbing me.  Let me head off the snide remarks first:  no, I do not need a game to have gothic clad beautiful women with witch-like powers to enjoy the game.  There.

I played the demo again last night how I should play these games:  slowly, methodically and with feeling.  I definitely enjoyed it much more.  The first time I played the demo I just jumped in because of the universal hype and praise for the demo.  When I take a game like this slow I can appreciate it more.  And I had a great time.  Therefore, I'm off to Circuit City today to get the $10 off and pick it up - assuming they have some copies.

I have a question though.  Can you play the game without using Plasmids at all?  I assume you cannot because in the demo you can't open that one door without the electrify Plasmid.  I would love to try to play the game through without using Plasmids because if I was stuck in that situation I would never inject a syringe into myself and risk turning into one of the unfortunate denizens of Rapture myself.  It goes against my nature.  Heck, I played both KOTOR's without once ever taking any of those enhancing drug things.  It would be nice if the designers gave you that option of trying to get through the game without using Plasmids.  Any thoughts on this?

I think you're genre-bending a bit. What you're describing is a RPG, which BS isn't. I know what you're saying, and appreciate your sense of role-playing a game the way you would react if it were a real life situation. I think to have an atmospheric FPS some things have to be left out. There are limited role playing opportunities within BS, you'll know them when you get to them in game.
But at its core BS is a straight up horror shooter.

Hi, my online name is Arclight, and I play Bioshock on easy!! There, I said it.
I've always been more of an explorer\role-playing\graphic's loving\ old fart.

I found the combat to be distracting me from that. I was so concerned about some un-expected encounter that I wasn't paying attention to everything around me..  I must confess I'm not a FPS lover to start with..Twitch and me just don't mix.

So dropping down in difficulty to easy has given me a nice balance between firing off some nice weapons and seeing the effects, and also obsessing over the great minutia in this game.....

Not everyone's cuppa-tea I must admit, but it suites this Old-Gamer!!!!!

Try it, you might like it.  You're not obligated to come here and confess you're playing on easy........Lets just keep that between thee and me... icon_biggrin

flip a coin?  god man, women choose shoes quicker than you're choosing which version to get  Tongue

Oh I already bought and am playing the 360 version- about 4 hours or so in, just not entirely satisfied with the controls and I am worried its effecting my enjoyment of the game-I totally love it but am having trouble getting totally sucked into it cause I am always wondering why the fights are so clunky and what I could do better-and this is a known problem with me-deciding versions of games and stuff. Its awful you are right.

To Arc-messes up some achievements and frankly, I don't want to play on easy. Thats for noobs smile

Yeah, I used to be like that. Some kind of gamer pride would never let me play on easy-mode....then I grew old.  I always start games on medium hardness, if it becomes the "least" bit frustrating I have no qualms what-so-ever to drop down to easy mode.

But then again, I could care less about the achievments.

Well, I played through the PC demo again, and played another 1.5 hours or so of the 360 version. I REALLY prefer the PC version so far, but the 360 version is on my big screen tv and I get achievements. I think at this point its more like do I mind experiencing the game for the first time on a control scheme I find VASTLY inferior yet still works acceptably or do I need to play it on 360 for the achievements and for replay value after I play PC? I honestly cant decide, but I do know that fights that were hard for me on the 360 version on normal take me a couple easy shots on the PC version. It's much, much more gratifying.

Play on Easy mode for the 360.........problem solved.

The 8800's are DX10 capable but performance is at best mediocre and piss-poor/unplayable at worst.

They're amazing DX9 cards though.

That said if you are going to build an entirely new rig soon.. it might be worth waiting a bit and getting a card from the new series just to have that much longer before you have to upgrade yet again.

Yeah, I think I might do that. What with all the good looking 360 games on the horizon, it wont be such a bad wait.

My jaw dropped after the movie screen went down on the bathesphere and the entire city of Rapture was displayed before you.  Awesome, awesome intro.

Although I shut it off right after I docked.  Already scared the piss out of me.

Is it really a scary game?  One of the attributes that would keep me from playing would be scares and creepy events.  There was a time when I was a horror movie fan, but I've more or less grown out of enjoying being scared, whether it be by games or by movies, and I'm not at all interested in a game that will scare me or creep me out in my own house.  I was only able to play a small portion of Fatal Frame on the PS2 before I couldn't take any more, and I managed to play just a few minutes of the Condemned demo before I had to turn it off because it creeped the hell out of me.

If Bioshock is anything like that, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass on this one.

I know exactly what you mean. I don't like a creepy setting that doesn't let up in its intensity. I've avoided numerous games over the years because of that.

The demo didn't creep me out much, but if the whole game is the same setting with the same intensity, I don't think I would like it much...
I would like games like this more if the pacing was better...You know, into the shite for a level then out of it for another level...etc...
Maybe the pacing in this game will be like that, I dunno.

I played the DEMO last night and I was amazed. I spent quite a bit of time just watching the flames on the water, checking out the detail in the stone steps, the lighting effects were incredible.

Then I noticed the plane tail was sinking, and I was like naw it must just be an effect that loops.  I watch a bit longer and notice that it is sinking and the plane finally vanishes.

The attention to detail is simply amazing. If the rest of the game is like the DEMO this will definitely be a cotender for GOTY.

GOTY? Well, I suppose thats possible given we haven't seen the full retail version yet. But from the demo I can't believe that this will be the best game of the year.......I'm really hoping not anyway.

While the visuals and atmosphere are top notch, the gameplay is so yesterday...I know, I know, FPS games aren't my favorite but still, I can't see this game being played through more than once. And then I can see it getting boring and frustrating toward the end.

Did anyone else notice the Half life reference near the beginning of the demo? The place where pip-boy(Atlas)tells you to pick up a "crowbar" or something...right near where you pick up the pipe-wrench.  With all the water around having a pipe-wrench fits.
But wasn't the first weapon you find in Half life a crowbar?

I wish I could "get" FPS games like some of you do.......after all the 360 sure does have its share of them.. icon_cry

There's less gay people than straight people.  They share something in common that's a huge part of their life and culture and makes them feel different from society as a whole.  It makes sense that there would be bonding based on this, no?

We could certainly make a site called Straightgamer but since most gamers are straight there wouldn't be a point.  It's just a way for like-minded people (who happen to be in a minority) to get together and feel a sense of camaraderie.  I don't think it has anything to do with "flaunting" or "being seen as liberated."

And this is what makes the World go round......Opinions....Thats yours, I have mine, they have theirs...Who's right? It doesn't matter.

and i don't think that "singling yourself out" should in any way make hate-related attacks okay.  they didn't have it coming just because they aren't hiding their heads in the sand, and the mere implication of such is indicative of an attitude that perpetuates ignorance, fear, and repression.  "keep your head down and no trouble will come to you" is no way to live your life, no matter what makes you who you are, whether it's gender, sexuality, religion, or whatever.  there's no reason to be so afraid of other people not liking your life choices that you become ashamed of them, and in AMERICA, of all places, it should be safe to be yourself.

I don't believe anyone here is saying, "hide you gayness"...but what "I'm" saying is, why the need to even mention it in gaming circles?
I don't feel the need to let everyone know that I'm hetrosexual........I could care less what people think I am.
It seems that there is a double standard at times....If a man flaunts his hetrosexualness(which is silly)but in any case, he'll probably get labeled homophobic......But if a gay person flaunts their preference they are seen as liberated...........

Keep sex out of the gaming world, and we'll all be happier, well balanced people........

I think this thread has shown more than enough reasons for gay gamers to have their own site.  No one is forcing straight people to go there so I dont see why it is such a big deal.
The thing is, I think the site is good enough for everybody. Just like Gaming Trend, the place for Console games (as it used to be) was good enough for PC gamers too.

For me, pardon my hetrosexualness, I don't get the whole name-tag thing. If it was to cater to everyone why call it, Gay Gamer?
Would you feel left out, or judged if there was sites called, Hetro Fragger's?
Would you feel like you would want to go there?

Are you asking me?  As a married heterosexual male I wouldn't have a problem going to that site, though I would most likely avoid it as it would probably attract the same crowd that thinks Axe body spray is going to get them laid.  No thanks, thats what Spiketv is for.  Also, who said they are trying to cater to everybody?

Not you silly......EduardoX....
