441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Starship Troopers - Anyone play it? on: February 05, 2006, 05:46:45 PM
Weren't there two Starship Trooper games? With the second focusing more on the book rather than the movie.

443  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / WoW is anti gay? on: January 28, 2006, 11:51:51 PM
Pardon the ignorance as I don't know WoW, but what other channels are there, in game? I imagine, as with all MMO, that there are people that just play and don't touch anything outside of the game (Forums, fansites, etc.). As such their only exposure are the channels you use while playing.

It also read, to me, that she wasn't excluding anyone per se. They were just looking for members who were accepting of the same sex orientation but not necessarily part of it. The only people it excludes are those that aren't. And really every guild/forum/whatever has at least one rule that excludes someone.

It also seemed that Blizzard was taking a rather proactive approach to harassment. "We don't want people to insult you so just pretend you are like everyone else and it will be aces." Now unfortunately there is a double edged sword with not following that policy and this is possibly what their thinking may be. What is someone started a neo-nazi or kkk group. By the same token that allowed the GLBT to recruit through general so could they.

If it was me making the policies, there would be a lot of double standards and I think that is the percarious edge that Blizzard is trying not to fall down but in doing so they already have.

449  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Finally saw Serenity [Spoilers obviously] on: January 20, 2006, 12:39:29 AM
I just finished watching it and I have to say I'm both sad and happy, but a bit more sad.

I'm happy that it was even made. Like Joss said, by some miracle we all got together and decided that Firefly shouldn't die. It's always a nice feeling to know that you were able to extend the life of something you loved, even for a moment.

I'm sad because of the deaths of Wash and the Shepard (Who's backstory I was hoping would reveal itself), mostly Wash though as I liked his humor. I'm sad that the movie didn't do well (Though I don't know how well the DVD sales went) and as such we'll probably never see the characters on the screen again. I'm sad because for all rights I should be holding Season two in my hands but we've entered an age where properties aren't given the time to grow.

In the end though, I'm happy because the movie was great.

452  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Finally thinking about a laptop [Updated again New Company] on: January 04, 2006, 12:04:12 AM
Didn't even notice you guys kept replying to the thread. Sorry about that.

Reason for not buying a 1500 laptop now and another one later is that I would have two of them in the end. One I would use and one that I would end up giving away. Would rather grab one that is as powerful as possible, run it till it's obsolete, then get a new one. I take a totally different view with a desktop since it's much more upgradable so I don't have to worry about it being inclusive thus I tend to take a more middle ground approach pricewise.

Shying away from the dell. Thinking about going with RockDirect.

Here's what I'm looking at.

Can't decide whether to spend the extra 100 and grab the Athlon FX57 or just go with the 4800. Same with the videocard. Is the 7800 powerfull enough to justify spending more versus the 6800?

If anyone know a laptop seller, that uses non mobile AMD64, in the states that lets you customize let me know as I'm going to end up spending about a 100 just for shipping as well.

Is the Death Gate series the one by Weis and Hickman?  I have all of those in a box somewhere.  I wish I could find it because I got the last one just as I was moving.  All in super duper hardcover.  I enjoyed buying them but never read them.  You've given me reason to seek them out!  What exactly are they about?  I remember a dragon on the cover and a PC game tie-in.

Of course that could be an entirely different series you are talking about in which case this will be a very odd reply.

That's the one. I guess a short synopsis would be that there were two elder races that ruled over the lower races (Elves, Humans, etc.). The two fought and one was sent to a living prison. Slowly some managed to escape wanting revenge but found that the other race was no longer there and the lower races now ruled themselves. One set out to find what happened to the other race.
There's more to it but that should hopefully jog your memory.

I'll admit to my memory being a bit vague but the only truly violent act I remember was when Jadis stabbed Edmund. Even then I don't recall it being shown. Would rank the violence up there with The Incredibles. If your kids were ok with that then they'll be fine here.

I really hope that this movie has done well enough to warrent more as this is my favorite series of books in front of the Death Gate series and Harry Potter.

Yet another rumor.

It seemed like there were a lot of things that the NGE broke. Crafting was no longer needed since you could typically find a drop that was just as good. Jedi was introduced as a starter archtype, huge mistake. Especially given the timeline when there weren't supposed to be many Jedi around. Shrinking the profession class from 30 down to something like 9. Removing player bounties. There was so much good that just needed refined but SOE decided to just sweep everything off the table and make a payable Battlegrounds.

I had considered going to Galaxies as my first MMO but first didn't because it was still pretty buggy and now because it's been dumbed down. As such, I won't be looking at this franchise again until Sony gets their idiot hands off it. Which might be the case pretty soon if the mass exodus rumors are true.

Here's what I'm looking at getting. Would like some feedback as to whether I should change any of these options.

Intel Pentium M770 (2.13 Ghz) This one I might bump down to 2.0
XP Media Edition (I've already got another copy of XP Pro so if I have to upgrade it shouldn't be a problem)
No Media Center Enhancements
1GB Memory (Figure if I want more I could buy it from Crucial for less)
80 GB 7200rpm (Again I figure if I want more can always go external)
8x CD/DVD Burner
Intel PRO 2915 and Dell 350 Bluetooth Internal Wireless Cards
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra (Not sure if bumping it up to the 7800 would really give me much more power for the dollar)
PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS card

I also figure I would grab another battery from somewhere else (Assuming that I could) as well as a wireless (bluetooth?) mouse and possibly some headphones.

All in all it's going to cost me about $3300. Any recommendations or does this look fine?
465  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Finally thinking about a laptop [Updated again New Company] on: November 20, 2005, 10:52:50 PM
Will just get right into  what I would like to have.

    2 Ghz (AMD preferably)
    1GB Ram
    DVD Drive
40+GB HD (5200 is ok but would prefer 7200)
15" display (Though 17 would be nice)
Graphics card (Need something comprable to an Ati 9800 Pro, Ati prefered)
    802.11g or b
    Integrated sound is fine
One firewire and two USB 2.0 slots (Would also like an Ethernet slot but it's not required)

I'm trying to aim a bit high as I would like it to last at least 3 years so I could still run some of my games. Would be using it strictly for gaming/multimedia/firefox with a bit of word processing on the side.

As for manufacturer I have no clue. Looked at a few websites that let you configure and it seems that Dell is ahead of the pack as far as price with Alienware second. Though admitedly I can only remember three sites that let you choose. As far as a prebuilt system I have no clue who is better than who. Also I can't really test any systems as I live away from any kind of major computer store.

It might be a tall order to fill but I figure with the holidays coming up I should be able to get a somewhat good deal.

468  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Harry Potter console games? on: November 17, 2005, 11:41:03 PM
If I remember right PoA for the PC and the Consoles was a bit different. One being that you cannot choose your main character, rather they are chosen for you. So it takes away a bit of strategy. Seem to recall the spell list being larger for the consoles.

I have barely touch Goblet (PC) but will say that there is a different feel to it. They tried making the characters look more like their movie counterparts. The control scheme is, well it's lacking. No more mouse control, you either use a keyboard or gamepad. The game options are virtually nonexistant as well, consisting of just the ability to turn on/off subtitles. No visual, no controls, no audio. Apparently the options are located in a config file but they didn't feel like incorporating them into the game.

479  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / We don't know Jack (Thompson) on: October 15, 2005, 10:40:19 PM
You mean like these:
As the "Man in Miami" for NewsMax.com, he made a series of bizarre allegations [1] regarding Reno, met with incredulity in the press [2] [3], claiming that she was a closet lesbian suffering from various mental disorders as side effects of Parkinson's medication, and that she was being blackmailed by the Mafia.

The Florida Supreme Court ordered that he undergo psychiatric testing during this campaign, which he successfully passed.

More recently, he has attempted to persuade the lawyers defending Dustin Lynch, charged with the murder of JoLynn Mishne, that video games were responsible for the defendant's actions. The lawyers have declined to do so, and Thompson has subsequently offered to defend Lynch for free, presumably in the hope that he may use and thus create credibility behind the "video games defense"

As well as propagating the "video games made me do it" defense, Thompson has also attempted to predict which violent crimes will be caused by specific video games; in the Washington Sniper case, he was the first individual to suggest to the press that video games may have been the source of the sniper's skills, a conjecture vindicated by the discovery of a ubiquitous PlayStation in the van used as a "mobile hideout" by the two men responsible. Dateline NBC reported that Malvo "trained" extensively on the Xbox game Halo. Because of this report, Thompson believes that "Microsoft should be sued and held liable for money damages by the victims of the Beltway Snipers." [6] It is important to note, however, that John Allen Muhammad was a former soldier with significant rifle training, as predicted by the police, and that Lee Boyd Malvo's shooting skills could have easily been the result of instruction by Muhammad.

# He has been commonly accused of, and many times proven to, use half-truths and misinformation to persuade others to accept his views.

# He frequently utilizes ad hominem attacks and slanderous "low blows" against those who disagree with him, as well as simply insulting his detractors, be they politely-worded or otherwise, with a variety of invectives.

# He frequently will either imply or blatantly insult those that express dissenting opinions as being mentally ill, mentally deficient, brain damaged, or on drugs.

# Accusations by him that those he disagrees with suffer from Tourette's syndrome, made without any substantiating proof or even the suggested condition's relevancy to the subject being discussed, are especially common.

# He has ignored individuals who point out factual errors or misstatements made by him and who supply substantiating proof or references, or has responded with the above described behaviors while intentionally failing to acknowledge or respond to the individual's mention of his (Thompson's) errors.

# He has provoked several people who have e-mailed him by telling them that they should enter treatment facilities. When they respond to his comments, he invokes the protection of the Florida Cyberstalker Law and threatened legal action against them. He will not hesitate to threaten legal action against people replying to negative and often hateful emails which he himself sent in the first place.

# He often invokes broad negative stereotypes against gamers in general. For example, in an e-mail correspondence with Scott Ramsoomair, he questions: "HOnestly [sic], are all of you gamers on drugs, or what?"[24]. In a correspondence with Ryan Acheson (Gaming writer for The Horror Channel’s Dread Central), where Ryan Acheson is supporting Thompson's intentions to make games rate M inaccesible to children, he identifies "gamers' ideas" as "the latest oxymoron"

It's really a wonder anyone can take this man seriously anymore. But just like Uwe Boll he somehow manages to find to find work.

I wonder what the prerequisits are for saying "cowboy" rather that "man". Do I have to be smoking a cigarette and wearing chaps? Or does it go much deeper.
Perhaps my daughter could visit me, from college, and bring her wacky dorm resident to get her out of some marriage proposal. Of course I wouldn't like the fellow one bit but would allow him to do some chores so I, and my rather large ranch-hand, could have a good laugh. Maybe after being unable to corral some pigs I could tell him to "cowboy up". And he would, and I could possibly respect him for that.
