Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Looking for a printer
|

I'm almost out of paper and would like to replace my old tractor feed printer with a new one. While I don't print a whole lot, when I do I usually do about 200 pages. Here are my needs: At least 10 ppm with 20+ being ideal B&W not color/Mostly text with pictures being limited to logos Trey (Cassette) loaded versus it being fed from outside the printer 600x600dpi min Mines running at 180x180 for what little speed I can get, but I don't really need a high amount. No more than $200 A quick search through NewEgg brings up a couple that could be acceptible. Here and here. I'm leaning towards the Samsung simply because it is so cheap but there might be something I'm not seeing with the Brother that would make it more desirable. Thoughts?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Obscure game impressions: Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon
|

What a coincidence. I finally opened mine up as well. Broken Sword was one of those odd adventure games for me. If you are an adventure fan you have to play them, but something always makes me feel detatched from the story. While I do plan on finishing it I have a feeling that it will take a walkthrough to do it. A) Because I suck at puzzles B)It will help the game move faster. I agree the game suffered in it's translation to a somewhat 3D world. With the controls crawling out bloodied and both legs broken. I had no problem adapting to Grim Fandango (Which people refused to play simply because it used a keyboard), but between the switching camera angles and the fact that left doesn't always mean left, it becomes an exercise to keep playing.
I also opened up Beyond Good & Evil today and it was like the heavens parted to give way to the sun, and for good measure throw in a rainbow and that fresh rain smell and maybe a kitten or two. So far I'm entranced and I've only completed the first mission.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why The Incredibles was the best movie of 2004
|

|
The plane scene was the turning point for me. Up till then I thought the film a bit slow. But during that scene I was rivited, finding myself repeating the commands she gave to dissengage the missles. I knew they would be alright, but I just couldn't help myself. I was definitely surprised to see the kids in any real danger. It reminded me of X-Men 2 where as far as the soldiers considered these were kids with powers and that was enough justification to kill them. There were a few comedy elements but in the end it was two kids running for their lives.
I did have one question at the end. It was eluded to, by the character, that Mirage also had powers. Did she or was it just a way for Mr Incredible to feel a little more comfortible to do what he did? Also what happens to her? The island base didn't explode so as far as I know she is alive.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [CG] Vision of Intent for PC Gaming Coverage

Echoing the same felling as everyone here about accessory reviews.
Something I would really like to see, and that I miss in CGM, is the versus. Taking a game (FPS, Strategy, RTS, etc) playing a few games and describing what your experience was, why you did this, why this move worked, etc. Kind of like what CSL was doing with X-Com but not to such a grand scale.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I officially hate Fire Emblem

Just echoing the same feelings here. I think I was just a handfull of missions to the end and ended up shelving it. I loved the game but damn it got difficult in the end especially with no user created saves.
My suggestion for each mission after the prologue is do a runthrough first. Don't focus on completing it but rather see what happens when ten turns happens or you explore a part of the map. It also seemed like money was tight at the start. Save it till you start getting heavy into the cult missions.

Is anyone else having trouble with the video?
Mine pays for a bit then stops then continues, which happens over and over. Not to mention there is no sound. Tried it on Media Classic and Microsofts Player. Going to download it again and see if that helps. Shouldn't be a codec issue, I would think, as I have every kind imaginable.
Update:Tried a different mirror and the same thing still happens. Strangely the video on the official page works fine. It's better than nothing I guess. Will have to holdout judgement until more gameplay footage is seen.

I'm curious on how long you are waiting for anything besides the background to show up.
Don't really have any suggestions other than grab AdAware and SpyBot and boot into safemode to run them.
It's also odd that SP2 is allowing a lot of popups. Mines currently at medium and I would say it has cut down about half of them for me.

I was about to say I was wrong when I couldn't find it at GoGamer or EBGames. It seems like the game was essentially blacklisted. You can buy it here if you want.

I've always been interested in this sort of thing. Besides the obvious advantages of not having to go somewhere to work it always seems that if you have enough discipline you could get more work done.
Graphic or web design would probably be one avenue to look at if you have any kind of artistic talent.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Broadband modem suggestions
|
on: February 28, 2005, 02:08:17 AM
|
are you looking for cable or DSL? you'll have to choose for now because you can't buy a modem that will do both... I had a feeling that might be the case, but figured I'd ask anyway. Essentially this is my situation. I'm currently getting Tv and Cable through Charter which I really have no complaints service wise. My problem really lies in how much it costs me. I'm currently paying 40 for 3mb down 256 up and then another 60 for digital cable. I would love to get rid of my cable service and go with a satellite as it would be cheaper but here lies the problem. Charter is the only broadband that currently reaches my home (Qwest may eventually) so I would end up keeping them as my ISP but since I would no longer have their cable service my internet would increase by another 10 making the satellite move to save money a moot point. I'm also currently renting a modem from Charter for 5 dollars a month. While it may cost me more money in the short term to buy one, in the long run it would save me money. Essentually I'm stuck in a catch-22. I can't leave Charter and get Dish (or whatever) because it wouldn't save me any money and I can't get Dish because there are no other broadband providers in my area. As far as speeds. I'm never really hitting my peak speed (I'm hitting 1.5mb right now). Especially with the majority of the bandwidth I consume (Torrents). The only downside to DSLs is that they don't seem to offer anything above a 128kb up. I would really like to get a lower tier for my digital cable service but they have them manuvered in such a way that I have to stay where I am if I want to keep certain channels.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Broadband modem suggestions
|
on: February 26, 2005, 11:02:06 PM
|
Need a suggestion for a good modem to replace the one I'm currently renting from my ISP and put that money towards a DVR. I was looking a while back at a Motorola (Company that makes the modem I have now) wireless cable modem. My problem now is that I would like to ditch Charter and go with a DSL service but for right now that service is not available. So what I'm looking for is a broadband modem, wireless or not, that can accept either services.

One of the worst commercials ever. I would disagree with that statement. Enzyte would be my pick. They were sort of funny with their double meaning words and that odd 1960s backdrop but that stops quickly after the 1000th time.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Was the Gargoyles animated series really this good?

I loved that toon...I remember the head gargoyle guy was the voice of another of my favorite toons but right now I cant remember who it was..I can still hear the voice in my head though. It looks like the only main character he did was Spawn. Did some voices for Justice League and Teen Titons. For a man who I only know by his voice he sure did more acting, than voice, roles.

Pretty big fan following is putting it lightly. I think The Gathering (Sort of a convention by the fans) is on it's 7th year now. Greg Weisman is still active with the community which you can't say about a lot of shows. It's one of the few shows, for me, where I didn't need the rose colored glasses because it was still good after all these years. I suppose I would agree with Autistic Angel in that it is a teenager+ show but I wouldn't place it in the same league as Invader Zim as far as the violence is concerned. I can't really recall any deaths, though I'm sure there were a few as was the case with the entire Batman series (Animated Series, New Adventures, and Beyond). To which it shares sort of the same feeling as those shows.
And besides it's got Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, Keith David, and Bill Fagerbakke. You have to watch it for those people alone.

I know that you have to connect the first time for it to match your copy and SN with your user name, after that you can set it to offline. It may periodically ask to connect to check for updates and maybe make sure you are still using the same copy (You could technically have multiple people using your username until one of them connects at the same time as you). But as far as needing to be connected the entire time, no it does not have to be.
