Probably the only caveat I would mention is that the deals for the consoles, especially on the Xbox, probably won't be here next year. So then you have to ask do I want to buy now, spend less, and have a few things to play or pay more and have more later on.

So I found out more garbage concerning Leo/Lisa (This Week in Tech) to the point where I'm bailing.

Are they showing more of their sex emails on screen? I have never understood why Leo Laporte is so popular myself.

I was introduced to Leo through the Screen Savers (Of which launched the Kate Botello debate on Gone Gold) on the once great TechTV.

No, he didn't show more emails of that nature. Though he did show subjects of the back and forth before the reveal that the co-host of Coding 101 (Shannon Morse) was going to not be there anymore.
My deal was that Chad Johnson was fired for no real reason. He's staying on as host/co-host for a couple of programs but I imagine it's only a matter of time. As well as the blacklisting of Brian Brushwood and Justin Robert Young, there is more to that but so far lips are sealed.

So I found out more garbage concerning Leo/Lisa (This Week in Tech) to the point where I'm bailing. So I need recommendations for:

A tech podcast similar to TWiT. It doesn't necessarily have to be rotating guests, a set panel is fine too.
A Microsoft podcast. I think I may have that one covered in that there is another podcast Paul Thurott is on (What the Tech), but am open to suggestions.

I'm definitely not arguing over the method which this was announced. Square assumed that the audience would lap it up and it's clear that they didn't. I wonder if the reception might have been better if they said we are releasing all the latest versions of FF1-12 in one collection. They also didn't do themselves any favors, anticipation wise, with the tech demo for the PS3 way back when. Nintendo did something similar but since theirs was actually a demo and not a scene from a particular game they didn't hear as much backlash, though there was still some.

I wasn't arguing that the PS3 versions of FFX/X-2 were ports, I did say they were just prettied up versions (Only thing new is the audio drama) and that until Square says exactly how the PS4 will be utilized that version is a port of the remaster. Is there a huge time gap between releases, no. I do, however, wonder if Sony approached them to shore up their PS4 library because it is a pretty short time between the three different releases.

Comparing this to Dark Souls is not even apples and oranges; it's apples and Boz Scaggs.
Is it though? Couldn't this also be a case of your options are nothing or bare bones?
Squeenix has upgraded past FF games that have been well received.  There's even a remaster of X/X-2 that came out just this year that's coming to PS4.
You are right they have upgraded past games. They also cancelled one that was in the planning stages (FF4 I believe), for no apparent reason. Again though this was done in the past when they had the money to do more than just pretty it up. Which is what they did with FFX/-2. Which for the PS4 is just going to be a port. Though they say it will take advantage of the console. But until it's cleared up what that means the PS4 version is nothing more than a port of a remaster. Which is probably still difficult having to go from PS2 to cell to x86.

It shouldn't be hard to know that a major FF VII announcement should not be a port.  It also shouldn't be hard to know how to upgrade this appropriately.
Again though how far do you want them to go and depending on the changes do you think it's possible to recoup those expenses when price is already being disapproved of.

Also are they really porting the PC version? Is this because PC is more similar than the PS2 version. Hopefully they use the re-release and not the original PC version.
48  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Squenix, the ultimate troll on: December 12, 2014, 04:11:10 PM
I could say yeah that was a given if I hadn't just finished playing Dark Souls on the PC. Whose community wanted just that, a port. I believe they got slightly slightly more than that performance wise but it was a pretty non-existant change.

What I really meant was does the community want just smoother textures, how about vocals, a different engine but still keeping the aesthetics ala FF9, or a more detailed one like FF10 and beyond. Should the music be re-done by an orchestra or remain the same but uncompressed or should it stay compressed to satisfy the purists. How about the localization, which I believe there were some quirks, should it stay the same or be more true to the Japanese version.

It really starts to get muddy when the wants of a person gets magnified to be people.

Add to the fact that it may be that Square just doesn't view this game with the same nostalgia that the western audience does. I don't mean they hate it, as it was the first game they put a concerted effort into after the surprising success of FF6 (Overseas). Just that for them it was just another game but for much of the western audience it was their first Final Fantasy. When they said, many years ago, that they would never remake it and later it became ten years. That to me was them saying you will never be happy with what we might give you so stop asking.

Then there is the final rub. Square seems to be in a constant state of almost running out of money. It's easy to say, well just make good games, but we all know it's more complicated than that. Audience tastes have shifted as have the platforms they use. What might have been a more straight forward answer to just localize DQ7 or release a new Mana/Chrono game. Isn't that way anymore. It's why some of the back in the day to current developers are trying the crowd funding route. Because publishers simply are not willing, or cannot, take the gamble anymore. If it's not the new hotness, or a cash horse (I know it's cash cow but who ever heard of beating a dead cow), they don't want to hear it. I know this isn't a new revelation to any of you but it doesn't make it less true especially when budgets have magnified by so much. Some companies can take risks and cancel projects that are near complete (Blizzard) but Square cannot and I'm not sure they could for at least the last decade, yet they have.

Who knows though. Maybe I'm making this more complicated than it is. Maybe the audience is there and Square really is clueless and I'm just not seeing that fact as I really didn't care about FF7 one way or the other.

ps The time stamp on Gratch's post makes it's pretty clear who he really is.

It was interesting, when listening to Major Nelson, that as soon as the two consoles launched they stopped reporting NPD as opposed to when it was just the 360 the report was never missed.

For the reason of public and shareholder confidence they have to say something. Even if it is only something as nebulous as we have a large install base.

56  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Potential bios and website problems on: October 12, 2014, 01:36:52 AM
Got the call from my parents. I wish they could understand I really don't know much about computers anymore but I suppose once branded family tech support always a tech support. But I suppose that's besides the point.

Here are the issues as I understand them... OS is Win 7 btw...
On boot BIOS stops and want to either run a config or continue with F1. Apparently the time that is displayed is quite a bit off. Is this a battery issue? I was thinking, at the time, that the computer was always plugged in but I'm wondering if a power supply had to be turned on first. If that's the case I might be leaning that direction. Just a guess though.

Websites. Some display fine others bring up an intermediate screen warning that the certificate is not valid. My dad was thinking is was maybe AVG doing it. But if I recall modern browsers have something like that built in. Had them continue through the warning to see what the address bar displayed. From what I understand, yes, the website address is what it should be and not something like that attempts to fool the user. Though I suppose something malicious could obfuscate it. Checked on my side and am not getting any errors about certificates.

Asked them to run malwarebytes (Full scan). I believe that was done. They were also able to update AVG and did run that as well. Just one item was found. Cannot remember what it was but I'm not too concerned on that front, in that if it could find it it should be able to deal with it. My dad did mention that the system seemed to run much slower. While I imagine that could be a number of things it's possible something that shouldn't be there is hogging resources.

So if someone has any suggestions I'm all ears and of course I'm hoping things will be clearer when I see it for myself. For right now I've suggested that anything financial or password related be done on their laptop instead.

  • This American Life
  • This Week in Tech - Hit or miss with me. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's boring which have both the panelists and the weeks news to praise/blame. Also I find Dvorak irritating. Oh and let's talk about yet another phone is old.
  • Windows Weekly - Another one that varies. Leo is either engaged or head in the clouds. I think Paul misses the days when it was just him, not that he doesn't like Mary Jo, he just has an opinion on everything and sometimes crowds her out. Also enterprise is not something that I am interested in.
  • DLC - I like the hosts, even if I don't agree with them sometimes. The live call-ins are the weakest part for me, to the point where I skip the person speaking. I'm fine with reading a message but hearing their, often times, garbled voice just grates on me.
  • Garnett on Games - It's gotten better with subsequent episodes. You have to be fine with listening to one person and know that if they make an error there is no one else to call them on it. Another show with call-ins, this time prerecorded. Which cuts down on the sound quality issues but I still have to listen to them meander their way to a point. Also the releases have been very sporadic with him trying to find a job. Since it is just him he feels the need to really pack the show where as with a second person each can bring in different topics.
  • John and Garnett Show - Another that has gotten better over time. Again though it appears to have suffered, release wise, from the fact that just like Garnett, John no longer has a job so attention is placed elsewhere.
  • Planet Money
  • Major Nelson Radio - This is the one that I'm very close to dropping. I do not listen to it for accurate Xbox news, I skip the interviews, I'm just there for the banter. Unfortunately with the lead-up and then release of the Xbox One it has gotten very rah-rah as of late. Coupled with the addition of Jeff Rubenstein, who's job title is evangelist, on top of Larry who already was PR, each show comes off as nothing more than an advertisement. I'm making the decision with the latest show and might come back to it when the console wars have settled down some.
  • GT Time - It's the replacement for Invisible Walls.
  • Super Best Friendcast - These guys live and breath video games. Yes I don't agree with them a fair amount but the fact that gaming for them is something they love to the very core makes it alright. If I had to think of a negative it's that they utilize hyperbole to a great extent. Everything they don't like is garbage or the worst ever. Also their community suffers from the problem of the hive mind. In that if the talent does or doesn't like something the fans will not tolerate any deviation from that.

That's because they most likely did it.

Just before news hit of a passenger jet going down, the rebels were the first to post online about how they downed another Ukrainian fighter jet.

Oh I very much believe they, either acting alone or with the assistance (Not only as suppliers but also assisting) from Russia, did do this. Though I cannot imagine why. Did they somehow think they had a way to pin this on the Ukrainian government or did Russia directly act as a very focused, and quite misleading, narrative that Ukraine are the devil.

I might go further with this but the thread is still in off topic which is why I didn't directly call out the rebels as the aggressor in my initial post.
62  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Passenger Jet Shot Down over Ukraine on: July 19, 2014, 06:53:26 AM
Here's a surprise, the rebels are now restricting the investigators from doing their job. I just don't get it. Every time something like this happens in a place where multiple parties are either pointing the finger at each other or one is trying to paint a difference picture ie. deny blame, it never looks good for the side that narrows or denies access.

Haven't dipped my toe in the current generation, and will probably not for several years, but it is hard for me to find a whole lot of appeal in sprite or 16bit graphics. That being said I can go back to something like Monkey Island and be perfectly fine with the visuals, but that probably has more to do with it being part of my past.

There's no Titanfall branded console for sale, and even the Titanfall controller that exists is not a part of the Titanfall bundle.  It's the exact same XB1 in a box except that Intern Josef slipped a download code card in.
My mistake on that one. Had assumed they were going all in on their Titanfall push which includes their favorite thing to do which is a redesigned console.

Yeah, wow. I saw nothing in that post that was preferential to one console over another. Most you could grab from that was the PS4 had the ability before XBO and MS was trying to make it sound like it was just them that could do it.

I would disagree with the opinion that users wouldn't see any change. Anything that makes it easier on developers means there is the potential that they can focus on other things like a backburned feature or bugs or just getting it out on time. But it's up to the developers, and unfortunately publishers, on how to devote the extra time so you may be right and nothing will be seen.
