I'll have to go ahead and try to find that NPR segment as I find this subject a fascinating debate.

Listened to the news on NPR and the one question I had was answered from the link. Namely were they underperforming because of lack of ability or because their male counterparts felt, even if not true, like that had to help. Also like a couple quotes at the end saying they are not closing the book on having women serve as infantry. Need more time and training. Think that new tech will also be something that helps out.

Absolutely hated RPO.  Poorly written Mary Sue of a novel full of nothing but pandering geek affirmation.  Reviews make Armada sound even worse. saywhat
Forge, we are of the same mind.  The more I read it, the less I liked it.  Your review perfectly sums up how I feel about it.

a book existing soley of references is bad, but what really galls me is it wasn't even done cleverly! it was a really lazy excuse of a story; i bailed near the halfway point (the S.O., who was also reading it at the same time i was, came to the same conclusion and also quit.) anyone conversant in trivia and retaining memories of semi-forgotten cultural signifiers and minutiae could bang out some reference-laden schlock wrapped in a generic tissue of a plot, and become an instant subcultural darling with little effort, i guess. so there's your 'get rich quick' scheme - it's still a market that has not been tapped out. do not underestimate the power of nostalgia and mimicry.

So we can look forward to your contribution then? Since it's so easy.
48  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Dear Gamespot, Stop Trying to Make Me Care about Your Host Personalities on: July 14, 2015, 11:46:45 PM
To be fair they were starting to make the transition when still owned by MTV/Viacom (Which they now have no qualms in stating were not competent). The catalyst to change probably happened around the time Shane Satterfield ( left. Game scores became a flat number rather than an average between aspects and the person who had reviewed it was now displayed (Which he was against). Then as you said Defy purchased them which then cut staff twice over the period of a year I believe. It should be noted as well that they did have some personality video content before Defy. First with Invisible Walls then with Annoyed Gamer, finally culminating in The Final Bosman which was their next big success after IW. Final Bosman is probably what solidified the move to having more people in front of the camera.

Actually I should add a couple more shows that come to mind that were around before the MTV purchase Bonus Round (Geoff Keighley host) and Pach-Attack (Michael Pachter).

i"m kind of with ATB on this one. I have no problem if someone wants to identify as some other culture or race. I imagine on some message boards, or the seedy parts of reddit, people are calling Rachel a wigger Which infuriates me as much as when other labels, like weebo or sjw, are applied to people. It's all a way to dismiss a person so you can feel big. Though there is nothing that says you have to like it, or accept it, but I would ask that you at least tolerate it.

I'm going to assume ATB was also being somewhat tongue-in-cheek with a lot of his post. At least I hope so. And yes you can absolutely "fix" a person. Which usually results in their identity being horribly changed or leads to severe depression and usually suicide. Just so we are clear on this I'm 100% against trying to force someone to be something they are not just to fit your narrative of what is normal. Though there is a rabbit hole that this brings up that I would rather not get into.

This also reminds me of this article from the BBC. People that identify as pure Japanese (Which is ignorant in itself) call her hafu, which she has embraced as a way to deflate the insult. Is she American, Japanese, or black? How about this, she is a person.

(As an aside I don't agree with the topic move. I know Eco-Logic likes to push it from time to time but while the joke might be groan worthy in it's bad taste in no way do I see it putting forth a R or P agenda. But that's not something I'm going to fight.)

Yeah that's what I was referring to. I'll just take your word that this practice has stopped.

What EngineNo9 is talking about seems to be the biggest response to this kickstarter. Unfortunately we can only infer that Sony will fund the production since Suzuki has not stated this, to my knowledge. Unlike the one for Bloodstained where Igarashi was very open about the fact that it was to gauge desire not fund the game.

Just got through MS conference and I just don't get how anyone can compare that to drop the mic that was Sony's. Really my only quibble, with Sony, was how long Black Ops 3 was shown.

Yeah it was wonderful when they announced Shenmue 3. Was watching the GameTrailers stream for the Sony conference and it was exclamation after exclamation for the crew that was watching, with the exception of Elise. It was great to see Huber's reaction to something that he has been hoping for, for so long. I imagine he was on a high for the entire night.

58  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: April 08, 2015, 04:51:39 PM
A multi-channel network really cannot do a whole lot to protect an individual from claims. Really the only service a MCN can provide exposure at the cost of a share of the individuals intake. When the Call of Duty exploit/glitch videos were being claimed by Activision the networks told their partners to not touch the clips in question as they couldn't help them with the claims. Regardless of whether you agree multiplayer exploits should be shared, saying that it violates copyright is laughable at best and murky at worst.

Coupled with the fact that YouTube does nothing to punish those, Orchard Music Group for example, that continually claim content that was never theirs to begin with or claim the content again that they previously gave up on. Adding to the stupidity a channel operator can never appeal more than two claims at a time or risk having their channel shut down regardless of whether the claims are valid or not. If a company wants to be a dick they can tie down a video for months basically killing any revenue the user may have made.

Really what the channels need is for the courts to hear a case on whether or not a game company (It may end up being more broad than that) can claim a let's play or any recorded footage if the person creating it adds to it (Transformative work). Hopefully they could also join up with the EFF to provide good legal counsel.

I know Video Games Awesome had counterclaimed a video to the point where if the claimant again asserted that they didn't have the right it would go to court. But I do not know if the claim was dropped or not.

59  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: April 08, 2015, 03:02:03 AM
Back to the video from Joe. I found him calm and collected, which is the opposite of his angry rant videos (It's his descriptor not mine), laying out the problems with Nintendo's stance and the claims that others have that oppose his viewpoint. From his previous Nintendo video he was basically told from an NOA rep that they know it's not a smart policy but the Nintendo headquarters in Japan trumps them.

Really their entire attitude concerning their customers has been off for a while now.

As for me I have no intention to ever buy a Nintendo product now or ever again. To go further, at this point I would not mind if the company dies. Actually no strike that, I want the old guard to leave (If they are the problem). If the company dies I think the IP they hold would not be treated well. Except maybe Mario Party as that can only go up from the depths it has sunk to.

Just to let you know the archived video for "Niko tries to get back into an old MMO" was flagged for audio so thirty minutes are muted. I sent a report but it's almost certain that it will be ignored. Requires the channel owner to make an appeal. Probably not worth your time but figured I'd bring it to your attention.

It wasn't just the rapists, but the lawyers defending them that had the same attitude towards women as well. There was no remorse, no doubt. Women were at best servants and the rest of the time they were nothing.

While a person doesn't know what they are willing to do until the opportunity presents itself. I cannot lie, there is a part of me, however big, that would like a chance to not only kill these people but torture them in the process. I don't know what that says about me, but there it is.

Are they showing more of their sex emails on screen? I have never understood why Leo Laporte is so popular myself.

I was introduced to Leo through the Screen Savers (Of which launched the Kate Botello debate on Gone Gold) on the once great TechTV.

No, he didn't show more emails of that nature. Though he did show subjects of the back and forth before the reveal that the co-host of Coding 101 (Shannon Morse) was going to not be there anymore.
My deal was that Chad Johnson was fired for no real reason. He's staying on as host/co-host for a couple of programs but I imagine it's only a matter of time. As well as the blacklisting of Brian Brushwood and Justin Robert Young, there is more to that but so far lips are sealed.

A tech podcast similar to TWiT. It doesn't necessarily have to be rotating guests, a set panel is fine too.

I'm definitely not arguing over the method which this was announced. Square assumed that the audience would lap it up and it's clear that they didn't. I wonder if the reception might have been better if they said we are releasing all the latest versions of FF1-12 in one collection. They also didn't do themselves any favors, anticipation wise, with the tech demo for the PS3 way back when. Nintendo did something similar but since theirs was actually a demo and not a scene from a particular game they didn't hear as much backlash, though there was still some.

I wasn't arguing that the PS3 versions of FFX/X-2 were ports, I did say they were just prettied up versions (Only thing new is the audio drama) and that until Square says exactly how the PS4 will be utilized that version is a port of the remaster. Is there a huge time gap between releases, no. I do, however, wonder if Sony approached them to shore up their PS4 library because it is a pretty short time between the three different releases.

Comparing this to Dark Souls is not even apples and oranges; it's apples and Boz Scaggs.
Is it though? Couldn't this also be a case of your options are nothing or bare bones?
Squeenix has upgraded past FF games that have been well received.  There's even a remaster of X/X-2 that came out just this year that's coming to PS4.
You are right they have upgraded past games. They also cancelled one that was in the planning stages (FF4 I believe), for no apparent reason. Again though this was done in the past when they had the money to do more than just pretty it up. Which is what they did with FFX/-2. Which for the PS4 is just going to be a port. Though they say it will take advantage of the console. But until it's cleared up what that means the PS4 version is nothing more than a port of a remaster. Which is probably still difficult having to go from PS2 to cell to x86.

It shouldn't be hard to know that a major FF VII announcement should not be a port.  It also shouldn't be hard to know how to upgrade this appropriately.
Again though how far do you want them to go and depending on the changes do you think it's possible to recoup those expenses when price is already being disapproved of.

Also are they really porting the PC version? Is this because PC is more similar than the PS2 version. Hopefully they use the re-release and not the original PC version.
72  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Squenix, the ultimate troll on: December 12, 2014, 04:11:10 PM
I could say yeah that was a given if I hadn't just finished playing Dark Souls on the PC. Whose community wanted just that, a port. I believe they got slightly slightly more than that performance wise but it was a pretty non-existant change.

What I really meant was does the community want just smoother textures, how about vocals, a different engine but still keeping the aesthetics ala FF9, or a more detailed one like FF10 and beyond. Should the music be re-done by an orchestra or remain the same but uncompressed or should it stay compressed to satisfy the purists. How about the localization, which I believe there were some quirks, should it stay the same or be more true to the Japanese version.

It really starts to get muddy when the wants of a person gets magnified to be people.

Add to the fact that it may be that Square just doesn't view this game with the same nostalgia that the western audience does. I don't mean they hate it, as it was the first game they put a concerted effort into after the surprising success of FF6 (Overseas). Just that for them it was just another game but for much of the western audience it was their first Final Fantasy. When they said, many years ago, that they would never remake it and later it became ten years. That to me was them saying you will never be happy with what we might give you so stop asking.

Then there is the final rub. Square seems to be in a constant state of almost running out of money. It's easy to say, well just make good games, but we all know it's more complicated than that. Audience tastes have shifted as have the platforms they use. What might have been a more straight forward answer to just localize DQ7 or release a new Mana/Chrono game. Isn't that way anymore. It's why some of the back in the day to current developers are trying the crowd funding route. Because publishers simply are not willing, or cannot, take the gamble anymore. If it's not the new hotness, or a cash horse (I know it's cash cow but who ever heard of beating a dead cow), they don't want to hear it. I know this isn't a new revelation to any of you but it doesn't make it less true especially when budgets have magnified by so much. Some companies can take risks and cancel projects that are near complete (Blizzard) but Square cannot and I'm not sure they could for at least the last decade, yet they have.

Who knows though. Maybe I'm making this more complicated than it is. Maybe the audience is there and Square really is clueless and I'm just not seeing that fact as I really didn't care about FF7 one way or the other.

ps The time stamp on Gratch's post makes it's pretty clear who he really is.

It was interesting, when listening to Major Nelson, that as soon as the two consoles launched they stopped reporting NPD as opposed to when it was just the 360 the report was never missed.

For the reason of public and shareholder confidence they have to say something. Even if it is only something as nebulous as we have a large install base.

Got the call from my parents. I wish they could understand I really don't know much about computers anymore but I suppose once branded family tech support always a tech support. But I suppose that's besides the point.

Here are the issues as I understand them... OS is Win 7 btw...
On boot BIOS stops and want to either run a config or continue with F1. Apparently the time that is displayed is quite a bit off. Is this a battery issue? I was thinking, at the time, that the computer was always plugged in but I'm wondering if a power supply had to be turned on first. If that's the case I might be leaning that direction. Just a guess though.

Websites. Some display fine others bring up an intermediate screen warning that the certificate is not valid. My dad was thinking is was maybe AVG doing it. But if I recall modern browsers have something like that built in. Had them continue through the warning to see what the address bar displayed. From what I understand, yes, the website address is what it should be and not something like that attempts to fool the user. Though I suppose something malicious could obfuscate it. Checked on my side and am not getting any errors about certificates.

Asked them to run malwarebytes (Full scan). I believe that was done. They were also able to update AVG and did run that as well. Just one item was found. Cannot remember what it was but I'm not too concerned on that front, in that if it could find it it should be able to deal with it. My dad did mention that the system seemed to run much slower. While I imagine that could be a number of things it's possible something that shouldn't be there is hogging resources.

So if someone has any suggestions I'm all ears and of course I'm hoping things will be clearer when I see it for myself. For right now I've suggested that anything financial or password related be done on their laptop instead.
