Can definitely tell who Fred Meyer is backing in this whole thing. This weeks paper has a half page devoted to the PS4 plus a small three foot section inside the electronics department. The Xbox has a full page plus four foot display on the outside of the department that you have to walk past when you enter the store. The display btw was converted a few weeks ago from a kinect one that has been there for close to a year.
42  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Still looking for the video outtake/blooper for Phantasmagoria on: October 26, 2013, 01:14:37 AM
I've been looking for this off and on since at least 1997. First saw it on a fansite run by Anthony Larme. For whatever reason it was taken off. Been doing searches every five years or so and just keep coming up with nothing.

I can even remember what it was. Will spoiler tag it just to be on the safe side.

Spoiler for Hiden:
It's close to the end and Adrienne (Hero) is running from the demon that had possessed her husband. She reaches a gap that appears too long to jump to the other side but conveniently there are pipes above that can be shimmied. I believe in the game you were never given a chance to try to jump the gap but they did shoot a sequence where she tried but for reasons of space could not fit it on the 7 discs. What happens is she tries the jump and doesn't make it. The FMV then breaks the forth wall and it shows her jumping onto a landing mat with the set (Green screen and I believe lights) behind her. The director then starts yelling at her about what was she thinking and she replies that she thought she could make it.

This has to still exist somewhere. It just has to. I've looked through various search engines and then just through youtube. I just keep hitting a wall.

September 1998

The DIG Soundtrack $14.99
Vampire Chronicles: Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned (Anne Rice) (Audio Cassette) $27.97
Shipping $4.90
Total $47.86

Good news is that if I for some reason wanted to buy the physical CD of The DIG again a nice UK site would be happy to sell it to me for only $3773.27 plus $3.99 shipping.

44  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [kickstarter] City of Titans on: October 15, 2013, 04:43:22 PM
Titan wanted to use CryEngine as well but Crytek never got back to them so they settled with Unreal.

The examples that I gave were just that. Examples of a group of individuals that stuck through a long period of time to make something happen.

Would a single player game first before an MMO benefit them. Possibly. If nothing else it would let them see how they work as a group and allow them to cut their teeth on something smaller. The problem that I could see happening with that, though, is there is an even less chance to be funded. Who would they pitch to? If it's the group that wants a successor to Heroes then they won't be happy. So then they have to appeal to a much larger audience that is constantly getting bombarded with requests. Whereas a hero mmo is niche as is a space combat game in that you don't have to spread out to find your audience in that they are already there begging for more.

Just in case it comes up, no, I haven't put any money into this. I'm not sure if I will. Waiting for the three I already have (Tesla Effect, Space Venture, Dreamfall Chapters). Also I hate spending money (225 dollars for a ship are you nuts!?).
45  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [kickstarter] City of Titans on: October 14, 2013, 09:19:01 PM
That kind a sort a is what kickstarter is though. A person or persons has a dream and you give them money because you would like it to happen. A little bit for them but mostly for you. No one says that every endeavor will succeed and there's a good chance it won't or maybe even worse will be a disaster. If at this point people don't realize these fundraising pitches are not guaranteed then that's tough luck for them. Cripes I pay the stupid tax (lottery) every once in a while because it gives me a little hope. That's all these things are. Just a hope that something neat can happen.

I sometimes marvel at the amount of money that some of the people here are spending on Star Citizen and it's not even out yet. I couldn't spend that much money even post launch for just a single item. But it's something they obviously feel passionately about and that passion allows them to get past the nagging voice that says what if.

Believe me, I get it. There's a good chance this thing will crash hard maybe in a month or in a year. I think both the donors and creators get it too. We hear all the time of various fan projects that fail. But then we sometimes get a Black Mesa or a Katawa Shoujo that through some miracle manage to happen even after a decade.
46  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [kickstarter] City of Titans on: October 14, 2013, 05:28:53 PM
I'm looking at what they are putting under budget. Of the initial request here is how they break it down. I also looked at the cost of software, that they don't break down, from Amazon where applicable and direct if they didn't carry it. So prices may be cheaper than I've listed.

$320,000 initial amount
-70,000 Kickstarter - Amazon - Taxes - Perks & AddOns (I'm not sure what they mean by this as there are no physical items in their pledge amounts)
-70,000 Unreal Engine (They do say that this amount is rounded, and from a cursory glance the UDK has two options royalty free or fee plus a percentage of initial sales. Guessing they are going to royalty free which right now is 50,000, if that is indeed the amount they are paying then that is one heck of a round up.)

$180,000 Funds now available
-46,788 Maya 24 copies (They are purchasing different versions and with that are different costs. I don't know what the breakdown will be so I multiplied both high and low versions by 24 then halved the amount)
-91,176 CDS Max 24 copies (This one is also listed in their write up as having different versions but Amazon only has one so for my sanity I'm going with that)
-7,390 zbrush 10 copies (They don't list how many copies of the following pieces of software so I just went with 10)
-5,900 Allegorithmic 10 copies
-6,210 Photoshop 10 copies (Used the CS6 version as they didn't specify so it may be a cheaper version)
-5,790 Illustrator 10 copies (CS6 as well with the same disclaimer)
-6,499 8DIO (This one is complicated. There are various instruments and vocals that you can buy. I just went with the full bundle)

$10,757 Amount Left Over

Then there are other items that they list. Which I'll just quote.
Quote
Then we have the costs for the website servers and bandwidth. The more you love us, the more expensive it’s going to get.

And, finally, a little cash to put a tax lawyer, book keeper and legal professional on retainer. Purely fee for service, but they will pay for themselves in troubles solved and money saved.

There are a few smaller items, such as RAM for some rendering, some 3D mice, drawing tablets, depending on individual artist needs.

I will fully admit that I may be wrong on some of these amounts and it may be cheaper buying direct when you can rather than going through Amazon. I also don't know how much they are figuring would be spent on the services/hardware in the quote above. If someone wants to take a stab at those feel free.

Going through this with the numbers that they provided, and the amounts I came up with (Plus a guess at the quote), I would take a guess that they are underfunded by about 10,000. Though I am definitely making a guess and the remaining amount that I came up with may indeed cover the remainder that is not broken down (Again the quote). But let's assume that it is enough. If there is any remainder it does not a salary make, especially not for the 24+ people that are involved with this. So it has to be all voluntary. There is no way around it. I would guess that their hope is that the project will pay for itself (Server costs plus additional content) in the long term and if all goes really well provide a job for some of them down the line. Or maybe this game would live as purely a labor of love for the community. In which case content would be added on a contract basis, as funds permit, but otherwise the game would function in a maintenance mode where it exists but that's it. My feeling is they are going for the latter with hopes that content can be added a few times a year.

I'll admit that some of their goals may be pie in the sky, to which I'll nod to yourself Turtle on this one, as I have no clue beyond saying all game studios are that way initially. I believe they do want to start small on some of the things so that's good. What may also end up changing is the date. I'm going by the latest date on their pledges (Nov '15). If it is all volunteer that date seems a little soon though again I really don't know how big their eyes are or really about software development in general so it could be possible.

This whole thing started because NCSoft decided to play the petulant child and not let anyone purchase the City of Heroes IP or even reconsider the closure. Out of all this a community stuck together pretty well coming up on a year now, enough so that not one but two projects (Plus a secret one) were actually being actively pursued. If for no reason than this I do truly hope one or both of them succeed. It would be a nice ending to this story.

Well, my dad used to work for the state university Extension Service as an agriculture and horticulture specialist so my first thought is to try your state version of that.  They usually have offices in the county seat towns, but there are also online services.

I see your profile says you're in Oregon, and they have an "Ask an Expert" online thing here if that helps.  You can submit your description and any attached pictures as well, and my guess is if they're any good they will be able to identify it pretty easily and give you thorough treatment advice.

Will try this as well. Just need to figure out a good picture(s).

Have an oak in my back yard. Lost a couple branches over the course of a month. One was very large and I lucked out in that it barely hit my house. Have noticed a few patches on the bark are whitish, break off easily, and the surface can be crumbled by hand into powder. I'm worried that this is the cause of the broken branches. See another patch higher up on the tree only this one is several feet long and there is no question that if the branch breaks in the wrong way I will potentially lose my car hole or part of home. I don't think it's fungus in that there are no growths on or around the tree. My guess is either a mold or insect. But I really need to know if there is something I can treat it with (Which means I need identification), if it's a lost cause, or not a problem.

While I would welcome any advice I figure someone might know an active forum I can try.

Also no there are no local arborists so I cannot go that route.

I always knew Paul Thurrott was a Xbox fan but I just never realized he was one of those rabid ones. Even when he previews the PS4 as well as a vs. he asks to tone down the partisan rhetoric in the comments but proceeds to make little digs at Sony as often as possible. Even his twitter is filled with the stuff. But my personal favorite is this quote "But once you get past the self-righteous indignation of supposedly outraged gamers, you’ll find that the value proposition of this coming generation of consoles hasn’t really changed."
I'm thinking Microsoft is actually getting their talking points from him. I also have to wonder if he has become so detached from the rest of us that he just cannot understand why we don't like the direction the Xbox is heading.

I'm really considering about abandoning Windows Weekly after this Thursday. Having listened since the beginning it's a weird thing to be thinking. But between this and Leo's inability to listen to what Paul And Mary Jo say mere seconds before I really have to wonder what I'm getting out of it. I've always had disagreements before but I guess when my knowledge base is 1:1 with theirs I find that the podcast is really slanted closer to one side than the center.

For the record I also have no plans on getting a PS4 either. I have too large a backlog to work through. About the only new game I would get would be Half Life Ep 3. But since that's never coming out I'm safe.

The idea that you'd use Batman:TAS in the same context just demonstrates how different our viewpoints are. But hey, if you are enjoying it, rock on! I'm not criticizing, nor would I, just strikes me as really out there.
I just used Batman as an example as it was the first thing that popped into my head that was sort of close to the age demographic of MLP, that I could also remember running home to watch. It's also something I figured a lot of the users here would remember. No other reason beyond that. In terms of quality, when you had the president of the initial animation company draw in the frost for Mr Freeze's helmet vs flash it just doesn't compare.

I suppose the discussions in this thread took me by surprise. One part because usually my topics die pretty much right away and the second because I also do not understand the objection, no that's not the right word, bafflement maybe. Hence my bringing Batman into this. I don't know if MLP is supposed to be taboo because of age/sex/or something else. Was it because I started to analyze it? I'm at a loss here.

The creators did know that some parents would watch this and threw them eggs so it wasn't all for their kids. Why else would you get a glimpse of the Dude or John de Lancie essentially reprising Q. By their own admission it was all the other adults that caught them by surprise. In making sure I spelled John's named right I discovered he helped create a documentary about the whole adult fan thing.

Ah, so you have, in fact, gone insane.
Clearly. Though I do have to say, and yes this is probably me digging an even bigger hole, I sometimes do enjoy watching programs for a younger demographic, Franklin and Blue's Clue's as an example (I still have the planets song memorized). It's nice to just enjoy something that wears it's heart on it's sleeve. Not having to worry about deeper context. The popcorn movie, if you will, but if it had a lesson to teach.

I would ask this, what would you think of an adult that just now is watching Batman The Animated Series. I think many would consider it a classic and for myself that is the Batman that I put above all others. Conroy and Hamill are Batman and the Joker for me. Is it only okay to watch something, that is no longer in part of your demographic, but only if you watched when it was? Or does the exclusion happen because you're the wrong sex that the show is catering to. Was I not supposed to like Babar as a child because it was French? I know I'm really stretching this but the questions can still be raised.

Moving on.

I really got into the plot holes for MLP because it was one time that I really thought about it. Normally I just accept whatever the explanation is. I'll bring in another MST3K reference as an example. The hands of two characters are stuck to metal bars. The reasoning that was given was because the bars were magnetized. It took Crow, I believe, to bring up the stupidity of this for me to go oh yeah that is silly. Otherwise I simply wouldn't have given it a thought. Really it boils down to being nothing more than a thought experiment to see how many I could come up with (And there were others). I would add that I have a fear that the Rarity character and maybe a few lessons fall into the Eric the Barbarian character from Dungeons & Dragons catagory. That being they are there not because the writers want them but because outside forces do.

My problem with the show besides being so random is the over-arching story (Which I was surprised there even was one) is given to you piecemeal.
First, Finn doesn’t matter much at all; he’s basically just a means to an ends to tell the more interesting story.

Everything starts in the modern day or shortly thereafter.  A man named Simon finds a magic crown.  Not long after, World War III breaks out and nuclear and mutagenic bombs wipe out the majority of the world.  Simon survives and finds a young girl in the wreckage.  His crown gives him the power to protect her but it has a price.  Every time he puts on the crown and uses its power he loses a bit of his memories.  Finally he starts to go insane.  Knowing he soon won’t remember who he is or even the girl he is trying to protect, he uses his magic to create a kingdom where she will be protected.  His last act as Simon is to create the Candy Kingdom and once it is done he becomes the Ice King.

The girl was Marceline, who is the vampire in the current timeframe, which is roughly 1,000 years after the war.

I did, briefly, see the scene where she remembers part of her past and the one where Fin & Jake are real. Believe me if there was more of that I would enjoy it more. But to reference Case Closed again the actual plot of the show takes a far far back seat to the weekly adventures.

I do wonder why then Marceline does have a person she views as a father. Is it a reflex of a young persons psyche to protect that person from the truth. Maybe Fin & Jake are real in that they were soldiers (dying?) and Simon gave them a chance to live but only if they promised to protect the kingdom from both the evils within and himself. Maybe in agreeing to do so they were given the chance to wear the crown and wish for an ability (Or first thing that came to mind) with the price being they would forget who Marceline was. The powers being Jake's stretchiness and Fin's spit.

[I hope you guys are getting affiliated for those Batman links because I sure didn't put them in there]
67  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: At the end of this I could very well go insane on: May 03, 2013, 04:36:21 AM
So I ended up watching three seasons of My Little Pony and two of Adventure Time. I would say that my initial leaning towards liking MLP more that AT held throughout. Of course both series had episodes that I didn't care for and AT had episodes that I liked. Have some random thoughts for each. Also I will quote a line from MST3K to preface this whole thing "If you're wondering how he eats and breathes / And other science facts / Then repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, / I should really just relax."

My Little Pony

  • Rarity is actually quite selfish and self-centered which is odd since her element is supposed to be generosity. Time and time again the lesson that she supposedly learns is to take the feelings of others in to account or appreciate what you have.
  • Why do they need to make it rain, other than to refill/filtrate what they use on a personal basis, if plants do not grow where they live (Exception being the forest)?
  • Slavery exists in this world. Cows and sheep can talk (I'm going to disregard dogs as it might be an evolution thing) but both are kept in enclosures and used for their respective goods.
  • Fluttershy despite being presented as the guardian of the animals must know that in order to have a lot of the sweets that are sold in the cake shop they need eggs. Which they probably get from her chicken coup.
  • The old are cast out or killed Carrousel style. There is one elderly and three middle aged characters that I can think of. We also see only two sets of parents.
  • The meaning of a cutie mark is not consistent. Most are based on talents or passions which is what they are portrayed as supposed to be but then there are others that based on personality or physical characteristics. How would a character know which way to go to get a mark? Do you wake up one morning and say hey I like to be an ass and get a /b/ mark?
  • Bigotry exists in the form of ponies vs donkeys/mules. With the later looked down upon as ugly or un-talented.
  • How can non-unicorn ponies write or do anything really?
  • Pinkie Pie is mentally handicapped, possibly also possessed.
  • Bronie is still a stupid designation.

Adventure Time

No bullet-points this time. It really feels like the show could be seen a few different ways. My personal opinion is that Fin is downright crazy and this is all happening in his mind. With several real world people being represented as other beings. He possibly murdered whomever Princess Bubblegum is supposed to be (Love obsession maybe). My problem with the show besides being so random is the over-arching story (Which I was surprised there even was one) is given to you piecemeal. Not as bad as say Dragonball Z but closer to a Case Closed or How I Met Your Mother. Also maybe I'm forgetting something but there doesn't appear to be any rules to the world. The only constants are Princess Bubblegum and the Ice King. Everyone else can do whatever the situation calls for. I wouldn't be surprised that as some point Jake can fly. Nothing else really besides I may watch a random episode but it's definitely not a must see for me like say Avatar The Last Airbender was.

Real brief I will say that I've re-watched the first two seasons of Gargoyles but hit a wall with the third. The focus from adventures to an enemy that is able to harm the protagonists from their position (See Senator Kinsey from SG-1) hampers my enjoyment a bit and I'm not a bit fan of racism in stories.

It's too bad Disney doesn't like you getting excited for one of their movies. It's been yanked from everywhere.

I'm not surprised this is coming from Pat Robertson. The man probably thinks ghosts are communicating to him through his cheerios.

For those that have played the previous games which would you say this one most resembles?

I'm currently devoting some of each day to get through the first seasons of both Adventure Time and My Little Pony in the hopes of understanding what is supposed to be so great about either.
Thankfully I'm also watching Gargoyles to keep me grounded.

My current assessment after about six episodes of each, is that My Little Pony is winning. Insofar as it at least teaches a lesson, albeit that lesson is interlaced with a full package of pixie stix.
Adventure Time though I just don't get. With the exception of the second appearance of Marceline I really haven't liked an episode. If I could compare it's feel to another show I would say Ren & Stimpy. The problem was that I didn't like that one either for the same reason that both are so random.

I'm still sticking with each till the end and maybe into a second season where most shows really find their voice (Or in Star Trek TNG it took till Riker's beard). I am left wondering why My Little Pony has a loyal male fan base. I'm not saying they can't like it I just don't see where the appeal becomes so large that they are acknowledged by everyone as deserving a stupid name.
