There's no Titanfall branded console for sale, and even the Titanfall controller that exists is not a part of the Titanfall bundle.  It's the exact same XB1 in a box except that Intern Josef slipped a download code card in.
My mistake on that one. Had assumed they were going all in on their Titanfall push which includes their favorite thing to do which is a redesigned console.

Yeah, wow. I saw nothing in that post that was preferential to one console over another. Most you could grab from that was the PS4 had the ability before XBO and MS was trying to make it sound like it was just them that could do it.

I would disagree with the opinion that users wouldn't see any change. Anything that makes it easier on developers means there is the potential that they can focus on other things like a backburned feature or bugs or just getting it out on time. But it's up to the developers, and unfortunately publishers, on how to devote the extra time so you may be right and nothing will be seen.

9  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Need a free mail client that can import Windows Live Mail (Win7) on: February 18, 2014, 11:07:49 PM
I want to say that the addon didn't quite handle what I needed it to. Honestly cannot remember. Thanks for the reply though.

Did manage to solve the issue. I used my Win7 machine to download a copy of Live Mail (The version that is not always on) and transferred/installed that to the new laptop. For whatever reason when you try to download a copy with Win8 they really would prefer you use the always on version. I'm sure I could have tried a few other search words and eventually got it but after hours of updating and installing my patience was wearing thin.
10  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / *Solved* Need a free mail client that can import Windows Live Mail (Win7) on: February 18, 2014, 03:38:34 AM
I need a mail client for a laptop my mom purchased. It has to be able to be used with no internet connection. She wants to import her old mail and contacts from windows live mail that was on their Win7 machine. The laptop is running Windows 8. The mail program that Win8 provides is purely web based and as such cannot import. Tried the new windows live mail that comes with essentials. That too is web based. Tried Thunderbird but it does not import Windows Live mail. Tried Claws Mail which also does not import Live Mail.

So again I need a free mail client that can run without an internet connection. That can import from a Windows Live Mail export (It created a bunch of folders and the file in each folder had a .fol extension). It needs to be user friendly as Mom is not tech savvy.

As an aside I freaking hate Windows 8. What a piece of garbage. I've been working on this machine for at least four hours just to get it updated and then this mail nonsense happened. I will never install it on anything I own.

Posting this just in case some of you don't see the news or check your email that often.

Right now they are saying that email, phone, encrypted password, name and mailing address. No credit card info has reported to have been taken. But as is often the case with these things I wouldn't be surprised if the opposite is revealed later on. Besides the fact that I believe the card is tied to your account so someone could, after unencrypting the password, pledge for whatever.

So just do the standard change your password for Kickstarter and anything else that shares that password/email combo.

I can never get into anything that's considered a "sandbox" game.  GTA, Just Cause, Saints Row, Far Cry, etc..  They always sound awesome, then I end up incredibly annoyed or frustrated with them.  Having a ton of flexibility on what to do and where to go is actually a detriment for me.  I much prefer a game that's tightly scripted.

Have you tried to just stick to the main story line or is it the mere fact that you can wander off a distraction? If it from time to time, in some way, reminded you about the main line might it work better? Can remember Garnett Lee not liking games like Skyrim because he easily got distracted. I think he liked the open world but wanted the game to keep nudging him back to the main path. Which sort of defeats the point of being able to do as you please. Though he did like Red Dead Redemption.

I know this is a conversation for another thread but this is just one of the many reasons I hate/fear the move to all digital.

This has nothing to do with what's going on right now. The digital copies will continue to exist for all foreseeable future. The only difference is that they can't sell the games any more. If you own them digitally, they're still yours and you can download and reinstall them as often as you like. Retail is no different. Expect these Marvel games to have a mass recall from stores in the coming days. You can still play your retail discs, but you can't buy new ones.

You're hating/fearing the wrong thing.

Reemul basically stated what I meant. Once something has been pulled, if it was only digital, you don't get a chance to purchase it. We also saw something similar with Disney. They had movies pulled and with it went the availability to view by those that also purchased it. Granted the latter was apparently a mistake and I'm assuming they did work with Apple to fix it. But the point still stands that if you want to play it safe have a physical copy or at the very least a backup. But even with those precautions you might be stuck if you have to authenticate to servers that no longer exist. Then your only path is the shady side of the law.

25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Silver Chair on: December 07, 2013, 12:55:32 PM
There in lies the problem with Narnia. It was never about the battles, indeed they were not really described in much detail with the possible exception of The Last Battle. But that is probably what the films had to rest on to even get made. Not saying a film maker cannot expand on the source material but Narnia was never really about fighting but about the children and their impact on the world and it's impact on them.

The allegories were definitely a part of the books but I never felt they were too heavy handed. Heck as a kid I didn't think about it at all only as an adult did I see the connections. Thinking about it now it seems a little weird in the way Lewis portrays Aslan. He is the creator of Narnia but also interacts with it from time to time so it would seem to portray him as the trinity. But then there is the Emperor over the sea that Aslan mentions several times and how the emperor has rules that he and Narnia must follow. Then there is Charn which Aslan knows about but does not interact with. Maybe someone with more knowledge in religion can connect all that together but it seems like Lewis wanted something like Christianity but not.
26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Silver Chair on: December 07, 2013, 04:27:25 AM
This is odd to me as Douglas Gresham didn't want Walden Media involved and because of that there was a moratorium of 7 years past the last film. Though I guess there was no explanation on what he meant by that beyond saying it was "To prevent them from using anything from the Walden films".
I don't see a problem with using the established cast unless it conflicts with the above. Now that I think of it they would be bringing back two sets. The children for Silver Chair and the young adults for Horse and Last. The exceptions would be Eustace and Jill who were around 13 for Silver Chair and probably 16 for Last Battle.

The display btw was converted a few weeks ago from a kinect one that has been there for close to a year.

I've been looking for this off and on since at least 1997. First saw it on a fansite run by Anthony Larme. For whatever reason it was taken off. Been doing searches every five years or so and just keep coming up with nothing.

I can even remember what it was. Will spoiler tag it just to be on the safe side.

Spoiler for Hiden:
It's close to the end and Adrienne (Hero) is running from the demon that had possessed her husband. She reaches a gap that appears too long to jump to the other side but conveniently there are pipes above that can be shimmied. I believe in the game you were never given a chance to try to jump the gap but they did shoot a sequence where she tried but for reasons of space could not fit it on the 7 discs. What happens is she tries the jump and doesn't make it. The FMV then breaks the forth wall and it shows her jumping onto a landing mat with the set (Green screen and I believe lights) behind her. The director then starts yelling at her about what was she thinking and she replies that she thought she could make it.

This has to still exist somewhere. It just has to. I've looked through various search engines and then just through youtube. I just keep hitting a wall.

32  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [kickstarter] City of Titans on: October 15, 2013, 04:43:22 PM
Titan wanted to use CryEngine as well but Crytek never got back to them so they settled with Unreal.

The examples that I gave were just that. Examples of a group of individuals that stuck through a long period of time to make something happen.

Would a single player game first before an MMO benefit them. Possibly. If nothing else it would let them see how they work as a group and allow them to cut their teeth on something smaller. The problem that I could see happening with that, though, is there is an even less chance to be funded. Who would they pitch to? If it's the group that wants a successor to Heroes then they won't be happy. So then they have to appeal to a much larger audience that is constantly getting bombarded with requests. Whereas a hero mmo is niche as is a space combat game in that you don't have to spread out to find your audience in that they are already there begging for more.

Just in case it comes up, no, I haven't put any money into this. I'm not sure if I will. Waiting for the three I already have (Tesla Effect, Space Venture, Dreamfall Chapters). Also I hate spending money (225 dollars for a ship are you nuts!?).
33  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [kickstarter] City of Titans on: October 14, 2013, 09:19:01 PM
That kind a sort a is what kickstarter is though. A person or persons has a dream and you give them money because you would like it to happen. A little bit for them but mostly for you. No one says that every endeavor will succeed and there's a good chance it won't or maybe even worse will be a disaster. If at this point people don't realize these fundraising pitches are not guaranteed then that's tough luck for them. Cripes I pay the stupid tax (lottery) every once in a while because it gives me a little hope. That's all these things are. Just a hope that something neat can happen.

I sometimes marvel at the amount of money that some of the people here are spending on Star Citizen and it's not even out yet. I couldn't spend that much money even post launch for just a single item. But it's something they obviously feel passionately about and that passion allows them to get past the nagging voice that says what if.

Believe me, I get it. There's a good chance this thing will crash hard maybe in a month or in a year. I think both the donors and creators get it too. We hear all the time of various fan projects that fail. But then we sometimes get a Black Mesa or a Katawa Shoujo that through some miracle manage to happen even after a decade.
34  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [kickstarter] City of Titans on: October 14, 2013, 05:28:53 PM
I'm looking at what they are putting under budget. Of the initial request here is how they break it down. I also looked at the cost of software, that they don't break down, from Amazon where applicable and direct if they didn't carry it. So prices may be cheaper than I've listed.

$320,000 initial amount
-70,000 Kickstarter - Amazon - Taxes - Perks & AddOns (I'm not sure what they mean by this as there are no physical items in their pledge amounts)
-70,000 Unreal Engine (They do say that this amount is rounded, and from a cursory glance the UDK has two options royalty free or fee plus a percentage of initial sales. Guessing they are going to royalty free which right now is 50,000, if that is indeed the amount they are paying then that is one heck of a round up.)

$180,000 Funds now available
-46,788 Maya 24 copies (They are purchasing different versions and with that are different costs. I don't know what the breakdown will be so I multiplied both high and low versions by 24 then halved the amount)
-91,176 CDS Max 24 copies (This one is also listed in their write up as having different versions but Amazon only has one so for my sanity I'm going with that)
-7,390 zbrush 10 copies (They don't list how many copies of the following pieces of software so I just went with 10)
-5,900 Allegorithmic 10 copies
-6,210 Photoshop 10 copies (Used the CS6 version as they didn't specify so it may be a cheaper version)
-5,790 Illustrator 10 copies (CS6 as well with the same disclaimer)
-6,499 8DIO (This one is complicated. There are various instruments and vocals that you can buy. I just went with the full bundle)

$10,757 Amount Left Over

Then there are other items that they list. Which I'll just quote.
Quote
Then we have the costs for the website servers and bandwidth. The more you love us, the more expensive itís going to get.

And, finally, a little cash to put a tax lawyer, book keeper and legal professional on retainer. Purely fee for service, but they will pay for themselves in troubles solved and money saved.

There are a few smaller items, such as RAM for some rendering, some 3D mice, drawing tablets, depending on individual artist needs.

I will fully admit that I may be wrong on some of these amounts and it may be cheaper buying direct when you can rather than going through Amazon. I also don't know how much they are figuring would be spent on the services/hardware in the quote above. If someone wants to take a stab at those feel free.

Going through this with the numbers that they provided, and the amounts I came up with (Plus a guess at the quote), I would take a guess that they are underfunded by about 10,000. Though I am definitely making a guess and the remaining amount that I came up with may indeed cover the remainder that is not broken down (Again the quote). But let's assume that it is enough. If there is any remainder it does not a salary make, especially not for the 24+ people that are involved with this. So it has to be all voluntary. There is no way around it. I would guess that their hope is that the project will pay for itself (Server costs plus additional content) in the long term and if all goes really well provide a job for some of them down the line. Or maybe this game would live as purely a labor of love for the community. In which case content would be added on a contract basis, as funds permit, but otherwise the game would function in a maintenance mode where it exists but that's it. My feeling is they are going for the latter with hopes that content can be added a few times a year.

I'll admit that some of their goals may be pie in the sky, to which I'll nod to yourself Turtle on this one, as I have no clue beyond saying all game studios are that way initially. I believe they do want to start small on some of the things so that's good. What may also end up changing is the date. I'm going by the latest date on their pledges (Nov '15). If it is all volunteer that date seems a little soon though again I really don't know how big their eyes are or really about software development in general so it could be possible.

This whole thing started because NCSoft decided to play the petulant child and not let anyone purchase the City of Heroes IP or even reconsider the closure. Out of all this a community stuck together pretty well coming up on a year now, enough so that not one but two projects (Plus a secret one) were actually being actively pursued. If for no reason than this I do truly hope one or both of them succeed. It would be a nice ending to this story.
