Thank you for wishing me luck.

I too wish you luck on that breathing through sand thing you've got going on.

The one thing I have constantly seen across social media, from Trump supporters, is that the reason why there are protests and the still constant hand wringing is because the Democrat candidate lost and we cannot accept it so we whine. While there is some truth in that we wished one had won over the other that isn't why these things are happening. The other thing I've seen is the call to give him a chance to show what kind of President he will be before jumping to conclusions. Why wait when we already know what kind of person he is now.

I've been through several elections. Sometimes my ideology lost, sometimes it won, but I'd never thought it was the end of the world. This is different, this is dangerous. When others and myself say Trump is not fit to be President it's not some knee jerk reaction to our preferred candidate losing. He is fundamentally unqualified. As the Vox article Canuck posted mentions this is a man that does not react with shame when caught and as such is not weighed down by conscience or fear of going too far. He is petty and quick to lash out at any who question his statements or interests (https://t.co/pkMc5ngHox). He has shown no restraint in personally lying or passing on the lies of others to get what he wants and when caught doesn't stop but keeps going with the same statement. We know he is a misogynist which shows that he does not value women no matter what else he may say. And while you might be able to debate this I personally believe he is also a bigot and racist. The only person he seems to care about is himself, but we already knew that. Indeed professors are already adopting his name as the most textbook examples of narcissism. When he says that he knows more about ISIS than our military and I know he believes it and that's scary. He has shown no knowledge of our government or the way it works. A favorite of mine is him saying that the military should set up a court system to deal with sexual assaults. I also think there are many in the GOP that somehow believe that when faced with the task of actually leading that he will turn to them for guidance. He certainly wasn't willing to do that during the primary or election, so why would he now?

So what now?

Right now there is a push to get the oversight committee to demand a review his financial background for potential financial conflicts of interest. If found unfit the GOP would select someone else to be President but I believe Pence would still remain as VP. The latter I'm not sure on. Instructions below.
Spoiler for Hiden:

Call your Congressmen and insist that they do not let Trump go unchallenged and step up if need be.

As for me beyond those things I feebly hold on to two very unlikely hopes. The electoral college decides to not vote for him and enough change to Clinton or heck I would be fine if they banded together and chose Ryan. Or the House and Senate quickly find grounds for impeachment. Though we would still be left with Pence which isn't a much better person.

I imagine what most of the people who followed this would both say "You're lucky you got the nations to agree on anything." as well as "It's not perfect, but it's a start.".

Would think most solutions would come from the private sector, but probably only if backed by the various governments financially. As well as making a big push for an emphasis on the various sciences at university level.

So say all states are eligible to receive 10 votes but only if the percentage of eligible voters who also voted in every ballot from the previous Presidential up to the next is 90%. Then 80 for 9 and so on till anything below 15 will get 1. Reward the states that have the most turnout. Make it a point of pride to be a state that votes.

There would be lots of systemic work that would need to be done (especially around voting access for lower income and minority voters) before we could or should even start thinking about implementing that sort of system.

That's another thing I've wondered. Why do not more states adopt mail in/drop off ballots? It seems like that would solve the issue of those that might not be able to make the polls. No more having to wait in line on a single day. I dropped mine off the Thursday prior but I could have done it the week before that even. Also I just checked and even if you are homeless or without mail delivery you can still vote. They only require an address to deliver the ballot which can be the county clerks office and you just pick it up.
7  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: This country has gone insane on: November 11, 2016, 11:04:00 PM
I know I'm repeating myself here but I might be fine to keep the electoral if it was modified to balance all the states and reward those whose voters are more active.

In no way would the lower population states prefer to see the system change to a popular vote system no matter how logical or sensible it may seem.
That just baffles me. They would rather be a place of inconsequence than one where every vote matters? Ugh

4. Keep clinging to the popular vote number. She's got a lead of something like .2%.  Insignificant. 200k out of 110 million votes.  Let's tear down the electoral college over this!

I haven't seen that suggested here.  It is a data point, however, which I hope those in power remember as they make policy decisions.
To be fair I suggested it. Not just because of that data point, but also because I find the whole thing a product of the past that isn't needed today. Hopefully an earlier post of mine explained my reasoning.

Quote
"Leftists today are searching for answers to explain their defeat. They arrived at a conclusion pretty quickly, it seems. Clinton lost because Americans are sexist, racist, bigoted, awful, stupid, and hateful."
Like Gratch has said, and myself above. Trump brought out those people because of his actions. I can give you a BBC interview with a Nationalist saying his group appreciates the message Trump is sending. I've also seen another one where the person's solution to illegal immigration is to just shoot them as they are crossing over. I've overheard a co-worker say he would never vote for Clinton because she is a woman.
Then of course you just have the group that wants to believe anyone who says they can somehow bring their jobs back. I'm sorry but your manufacturing or energy jobs just are not coming back. If I had to be honest this is the group I would fall under if something happens to me. I'm not college educated and work in the service industry. Also I know exactly how automation could replace me. The only reason it hasn't is either the tech isn't up to snuff yet or the costs scale hasn't shifted.

Yes. And this cannot be stopped. Not by the House. Not by the Senate. Not by the Supreme Court. Not by the nation's generals and admirals. Not by the populace. Not by military advisors.

He has his finger on the trigger, and no one else is in the room. 300 million people will go to war if Putin calls Trump a pussy. Good luck with that delusion.

<edit> I hope you don't truly feel that way, and are simply voicing a knee jerk reaction. If not, in the words of my best friend, "THEY got to you." I'm still not entirely certain who THEY are, but THEY apparently are very convincing and very busy. And by the way, always capitalize "THEY".
Wow what a stupid response, thanks for that. But I'll bite.

Quote
Only the United States Congress has the right to declare war, but a U.S. president can authorize the use of armed forces abroad provided that Congress is informed within 48 hours and under the condition that all forces must be withdrawn if Congress does not grant an extension within 60 days. These provisions are included in the War Powers Resolution passed by Congress in 1973.

Tried to also find whether the President could order, say the Navy, wherever he wanted them to be stationed but couldn't. I'm guessing yes, but that's not a firm one.

How about I expand my statement. A President needs to be measured on when and how to act when it comes to using the military. I don't think he has that quality, as we have seen, when parts of his life now and in the past have come to the surface. He is not a think before you act kind of person. He's a do whatever the hell he feels like doing, damn the advice of or affect to others, person. Do I expect the Commanders to say no if the demand is beyond the pale? Yes. But it's also an easy line to get right next to, without realizing it.

If it hasn't been apparent in my previous comments I'm genuinely afraid for the future. I've seen three Presidents in my voting life and while I've very much disagreed with things each of them has done I knew that the country would keep on doing it's thing with a lane change here or there. Sometimes my views win and sometimes not. In a previous post I said that it could take decades to fix what a Trump Presidency could do. I'm being optimistic. I flat out do not believe he is fit to be President. Do I really believe he can do that much damage to the country in just four years. Yes. And when I say that I don't mean just him alone.

When we saw him campaigning across this nation we also saw the dregs rise up and unmask declaring with conviction that this was their man at last. And he was in many ways. His rhetoric was always it's their fault you don't have jobs, it's them that will rape your daughters, it's them that control the banks. I would not be surprised to see xenophobia rise to a fevered pitch among them resulting in violence against all that isn't white and christian (Which shouldn't happen if they really followed that faith). Do I know the severity that this entails? No. But I would guess much worse than what we saw after the attacks on the Twin Towers. We are already seeing first hand reports of people on the receiving end of this hate. Having said that this is the thing that we the people can tackle. Make the pieces of garbage realize that they are not wanted and we will not stand for their kind.

Then we have the environmental concerns. While the Paris agreement has been ratified, and the US cannot back out for three years, there is also nothing to stop him from just ignoring it. I know that Republicans like to believe that science doesn't exist but it does and Climate Change is real and the largest impact rests with us. While it's quite possible it may be too late for some of the targets it doesn't have to be for others. We can heavily invest in alternative fuels/energy and possible replacements for how plastics are made. Institute a cap and trade system. It worked to tackle acid rain (Signed by Bush Sr. no less) it can work here. Also react swiftly to plug the holes, in the rules, that industry will probably find. Institute not just heavy fines for implicit polluting by industry and big business but also heavy fines and actual jail time for upper management. And quite possibly the biggest thing. Make education a priority. By that I mean the sciences. Do whatever it is you have to do to make it incredibly attractive to want to be in these fields. If the narrative can be effective then make it patriotic and not just for men but women as well.

While I'm sure to think of other things the other one that comes to mind is information (and yes entertainment) and our access to it. I have every reason to believe that the Open Internet Order aka Net Neutrality and the recent privacy protections will be killed. Say hello to toll bridges to access content at a decent speed or at all. More data caps and throttling are sure to follow. Say goodbye to ever having competition in the market. Again though the solution is simple. Make competition mandatory by requiring ISPs to have to provide pole access and of course write Neutrality into law. Do I see either of these happening now? God no.

I'll just end it here with a repeat of what I've before. I've never gone into a Presidency with the fear I'm feeling even now after the shock has faded. My only hope is either the Democrats block him at every turn or less likely the two parties work together for the common good. Of course there is also the longest of long shots. He could do, or be convicted of, something awful enough that the Republican party has no choice but to impeach but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Even if he receives guilty verdicts on all pending litigation against him it's unlikely to happen.

Should also add that the people didn't elect Trump, the electoral college did. The people, at least right now, selected Clinton.
So the message is your vote matters but only if your state has a larger number otherwise why bother.

I would love to see it removed or at the very least changed to reflect the ratio of those that vote vs those that can with a cap that each state can achieve.

Couple of things here, one Clinton won California and New York which are very populous states and it was the smaller middle states that Trump made the difference in.  And two voters did not turn out for Clinton like the projections assumed they would so under your idea it seems Clinton would have come of even worse as the Trump voters were energized to go out and cast their preference.

Quick search that may not be up to date has Clinton ahead in the popular vote by 200,000+. Yes Trump was able to get the nibbles but you cannot tell me that states like Texas and Florida were not the real prizes. I'll be honest, if I were to ever run for President I would make exactly one brief stop in a state like Vermont or Wyoming because in the scheme of things 3 votes do not matter unless projections show there will be a tight race. I would focus most of my money and time on the 15+ and some time to the 10+. Send the Vice President to the small states.

It's a victory for hate and fear.
Do I believe that the country will implode, no. Do I think it will take decades to fix the mess that will happen? Hell yes.
This is what will happen over the course of the next four years.

Goodbye Net Neutrality. Hello business, not people, friendly FCC Chairman.
Suddenly Supreme Court Judges will make it to the floor for voting. Except these will not care about your personal freedoms or privacy. It's big business all the way.
If the repeal of Obamacare makes it to his desk millions will wind up uninsured again. What's that, you cannot afford to pay for that operation well fuck you.
Taxes will go down. For the wealthy.
Environmental regulations will go away. I mean who cares about the planet when there is money to be made. What's that, we are probably past the point of no return. Hell let's rape the planet it's not like I'll be around to feel the full force of it so screw anyone that isn't me.

Republicans have always been about the short term at the expense of the long. Helping those who already had the means to help themselves. I don't see that changing and I certainly don't see Trump suddenly becoming competent or humble when he realizes that there is more to this President thing than being popular with the village idiots.

My only hope is that the Democrats will take a page from them and block and filibuster every damn thing that is possible. They opened the gates to obstructionism let them reap it for a while.

Don't see why they would bother. Their economists showed them that they can get more money by keeping a static sale price rather than one that fluctuates. There is no amount of flash games that will make that exciting.

I believe with a console you are limited in a couple ways, that I know of.

One, patches take longer to come vs a PC.
Two, the world cannot be as large vs a PC.

There sort of is a demo, in that there is a free version (PC) from several years back. But it is no way representative of the current version. Just gives a feel for the world.

Here are the min specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 (K8) 2.6 GHz.
RAM: 2GB.
GPU (Integrated): Intel HD Graphics or AMD (formerly ATI) Radeon HD Graphics with OpenGL 2.1.
GPU (Discrete): Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT or AMD Radeon HD 2400 with OpenGL 3.1.
HDD: At least 200MB for Game Core and Other Files.

I really hope they do not decide to be greedy. But who am I kidding this is a patent. It reads like those other patents that wouldn't normally get approved except they put "on a computer" in it. That's disregarding the fact that it's math to begin with.

It's possible that Hello may be able to get it through without having to fight the patent battle. Genicap's algorithm patent is based on the application of it and while it doesn't specifically state games it does say other software. But yeah it's being used as a threat (Like all patents seem to be these days) that will probably result in a payout.

May or may not be a problem. A Dutch company (Genicap) owns the patent to the formula used in the game. Right now there doesn't appear to be any legal threat just wanting to talk sit down with Hello Games. Hopefully they want to share information and not want a payout.

Just in case you haven't seen this yet here we go.

The short of it is that the Copyright office is taking public comment on the DMCA. Comments end today (April 1st) at 11:59 EST.
I'm sure most of us, that view user created content, have seen the abuse the DMCA creates.
There are groups who file takedowns on content they do not own just to get the revenue. Groups that refile after clearing the same content. That use the DMCA to remove legitimate content just because they don't agree with it or actively do no like the creator. Takedowns are filed for content where the claims flat out do not exist. I could go on and on.

Bottom link contains a form letter, though personal touches to it or a custom comment are probably more helpful.

Video of Doug from Nostalgia Critic making his case for why you should care.

https://www.takedownabuse.org/#save-fair-use

For anyone curious here is the rambling mess I wrote.
Spoiler for Hiden:
The DMCA, as it stands now, while offering protection for large content creators does not shield the individual from a multitude of abuses as detailed in the following:

- A group can claim content they do not own for the express purpose of receiving revenue and when finally threatened with legal action will rescind the claim only to move on to another creators content to do it all over again.
- Content can be void of any Intellectual Property (Music or Images) yet still be subject to a takedown without peer review.
- Multiple claims can be filed on the same content, even after said content was cleared by claimant.
- Takedowns can be filed to silence or threaten a critic of a particular IP/person/group in violation of the First Amendment.
- Content can be subject to a takedown claim without taking Fair Use into account.
- Takedowns are filed not by the actual claimant but a third party thereby shielding the claimant from any repercussions related to said claim.

Bottom line the DMCA was created when the Internet was still beginning but has not changed to reflect how it is used today. There needs to be protections put in place that defend the creators of today in addition to those that have been with us in the past. As well as actual penalties for those that abuse the DMCA in ways that the framers of said law could never have envisioned.

Huge, huge news. Most Presidents go through their entire term without getting to appoint a Supreme Court Justice, let alone two.
Course I also see the Republican led Congress throwing endless tantrums and refusing to confirm anyone until the next President. Much like the Republicans are refusing (Putting on hold and then not bringing up again) so many appointments, even though they should only be objecting if there is reasonable cause to, not because their side isn't at the head of the nation. This stupidity is why the approval rating is around 11% for all of Congress.

There is a link (That you figure out) to one of the companions backstories, but other than that no it's doesn't matter in what order or when you do them.

So far have been using DVDFab for my ripping. Lets you select what you do and do not want (Audio and Subtitles) and how you want it (File types). It is a slow process though with each disc taking about 25 minutes or so to rip with a file size 900mb and up depending on what you want ripped.
Not running a Plex server personally as I went with Kodi (XBMC).

With rifftrax the mst3k need is pretty much met for me I feel like I don't really need a new MST3K with an unknown cast. I always skipped the parts that weren't the movie anyway.

I loved MST3k back in the Joel days but the quality quickly fell off after he left and by the time the mads bailed it was nearly unwatchable.

I'm pretty excited about the idea of a new cast if Trace and Frank Coniff weren't available.

It's funny because I'm the complete opposite in regards to Joel vs Mike. Was also never a fan of the invention exchange. Did like the mads though.
It was an unfortunate situation they were in near the end. They couldn't really afford anything new, in regards to movies, and most of the old had been done. Which is why Rifftrax works so well.
But I will never wish that this endeavor ill. Though I do wonder if they try for another season if it will be successful.

I went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered a new modem. Old one was docsys 1.0 and this one will be 3.0 so I might see better speeds. Was ordering parts to build a htpc anyway so what's another 60 (wallet cries).
Just for kicks here was an event log

Have been having a problem for maybe 5 weeks, been tracking it with a monitor for a month.

My internet connection dies for about 30 seconds and and then re-establishes. This only happens when more data than a ping occurs. So everything from simple browsing to downloading a file can trigger it. I will say prior to it being this bad I would sometimes get disconnects when viewing a certain website (No I'm not saying which, no it wasn't sexual/illegal) but everything else was fine.

I've seen my modem do one of two things. Either the status will turn orange, from green, with ethernet off but power and cable still on. Or all lights will be off with the exception of power. Yes I do have it connected to a router. No the router has never lost connection except when the modem does. Yes it does happen whether I am wired or wireless.

Just finished with a chat support session and they inform me that my modem is having many timeouts.

So right now I'm stuck. I could go out and purchase a new modem if it is indeed the problem. But I also know bigger isps will try to deflect their problem onto something else if they can.

Lucky this isn't reddit. Otherwise half the comments would be about how vertical video proves the person strangles puppies in front of children. Also this guy is an idiot. Though I was hoping it was water beneath glass or plastic.

Listened to the news on NPR and the one question I had was answered from the link. Namely were they underperforming because of lack of ability or because their male counterparts felt, even if not true, like that had to help. Also like a couple quotes at the end saying they are not closing the book on having women serve as infantry. Need more time and training. Think that new tech will also be something that helps out.

Absolutely hated RPO.  Poorly written Mary Sue of a novel full of nothing but pandering geek affirmation.  Reviews make Armada sound even worse. saywhat
Forge, we are of the same mind.  The more I read it, the less I liked it.  Your review perfectly sums up how I feel about it.

a book existing soley of references is bad, but what really galls me is it wasn't even done cleverly! it was a really lazy excuse of a story; i bailed near the halfway point (the S.O., who was also reading it at the same time i was, came to the same conclusion and also quit.) anyone conversant in trivia and retaining memories of semi-forgotten cultural signifiers and minutiae could bang out some reference-laden schlock wrapped in a generic tissue of a plot, and become an instant subcultural darling with little effort, i guess. so there's your 'get rich quick' scheme - it's still a market that has not been tapped out. do not underestimate the power of nostalgia and mimicry.

ugh...
So we can look forward to your contribution then? Since it's so easy.
40  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Dear Gamespot, Stop Trying to Make Me Care about Your Host Personalities on: July 14, 2015, 11:46:45 PM
To be fair they were starting to make the transition when still owned by MTV/Viacom (Which they now have no qualms in stating were not competent). The catalyst to change probably happened around the time Shane Satterfield (siftd.com) left. Game scores became a flat number rather than an average between aspects and the person who had reviewed it was now displayed (Which he was against). Then as you said Defy purchased them which then cut staff twice over the period of a year I believe. It should be noted as well that they did have some personality video content before Defy. First with Invisible Walls then with Annoyed Gamer, finally culminating in The Final Bosman which was their next big success after IW. Final Bosman is probably what solidified the move to having more people in front of the camera.

Actually I should add a couple more shows that come to mind that were around before the MTV purchase Bonus Round (Geoff Keighley host) and Pach-Attack (Michael Pachter).
