Not to mention 2 incredibly attractive and marketable stars (well at least one, I can easily see Yvonne Stravinski (?) making a couple movies and becoming the next Katherine Heigl - It Girl

Definitely 2.  Every time I see Sarah Lancaster, I think Wonder Woman.

I'd get a hybrid. The situation you describe is exactly why they're made. I don't know why you'd get a mountain bike then put hybrid tires on it when you could just buy a hybrid. Consider a mountain bike if there is any possibility that you may pick it up as a hobby (I know you said you won't, but it's fun!). Don't even look at road bikes.

Go with the low-end of a good brand like Specialized, Giant, Trek, Gary Fisher, etc..., maybe used or last years model, and it will last you for years and years. If you don't like the people at the bike shop, go to a different one. And they should measure you to make sure you're getting the right size.

I ended up with a Specialized Crossroads (at least I think that's the model) due to the lack of any real trails in my area.  Hybrid is fine as long as you don't end up with real off-road things.  Then, you can get knobby tires and then, if for some crazy reason you really get into the hobby, you can choose a real road bike or a real mountain bike, so nothing lost really.

Check with your energy company.  Ours sells something called Strikesafe which acts as a surge protector for your house.  I don't know if there's an initial cost, but it's a monthly fee deal.

Florida Power has something similar.  Note that if a bolt of lightning hits close by, everything's toast anyway, no matter what.  No circuit breaker in the world will protect against that.  It will protect against surges from further away though.

I really can't see anyone getting fit with Wii Fit unless they put in around an hour a day.

Agreed and an hours jog or whatever fitness you do will no doubt be more benefit.

Have to disagree:

I was sadly out of shape prior to Christmas, up to 202 at 5-9 after I badly pinched a nerve in my leg and back and was pretty much out of commission for most of the fall, to the point that slow walking was painful, forget anything qualified as "exercise".

However, after feeling relatively good for a few weeks, I bought a Wii in February (bowling - yes, boxing - yes, tennis - sort of.  Baseball - dear god, someone ripped my arm off - not doing it).  Dropped about a couple pounds on Wii sports.  Finally got to the point where I could walk and not look like Frankenstein with a bad back, but running was out of the question still.

Bought Wii Fit on day 1 and have been doing 30 minutes per day, missing a day or two here and there.  I am down to just under 193 and this is from doing nothing but Fit and Sports.  I can even do both the tennis and baseball events without pain.   icon_eek

I'm finally in some kind of mediocre shape that I can get back to doing active things again (The bike just went in the shop for a tuneup after 9 months of no use, because I couldn't even get on it) and continue my transformation back to the real me from an amorphous blob - and not one minute spent on godawfulboringashell physical therapy.

Now, I'm not claiming that it'll do a lot for someone who is in decent shape, but for someone like me, I have to say that the silly thing works.  I was skeptical, but at the heavy encouragement from mrs. AB, I tried it.  Darned if she wasn't right.  Smart lady she is  nod

I work for a company that would help these ISPs do this kind of thing.  Trust me when I say that both cable and DSL ISPs are looking to do this kind of stuff.  It is one of the only ways they can hope to control costs from all these new applications that eat up tons of bandwidth.  Expect this to be the norm soon.

A large number of companies are trying to nickel and dime people to death, including governments as of late.
  • Rental cars: sure, are rates are 13 bucks a day, but after all our fees, which are not optional, it's really 25 bucks a day, then add all the taxes, and it's not a great rate.
  • Buy a car - 18k? not really.  We have your dealer fee and your advertising fee and your car prep fee and your document prep fee and your document filing fee and more!  It's really 20k, but we might dicker and let you drop a little off that price.
  • Airlines - bag handling fees, bag carriage fees, fuel fees, pillow fees, blanket fees, food fees and more!
  • Governments - around here, some of the towns are now starting to charge a fire fee.  This fire fee was included in the taxes last year.  Did the poor folks who pay this fee pay that much less in taxes? Nope.  That went up too.
  • Toll Roads - this one is my "favorite."  They put up a toll road in this town when they got the first one and said, oh it's just to pay for the road (never mind there is an assessment for roads in the tax structure) - we'll take it down when the road is paid for.  So they set up an administration to manage it it.  Next up: new toll road extension.  Where's the money coming from? road assessment fee.  Those "temporary" toll booths? Now being upgraded to permanent concrete superstructures.  Where'd the money come from? Yes! The toll!  Oh, they also had enough money to loan money back to the county so it could build a regular road, which of course, has a toll on it, to pay for the loan.  Naturally, we're told it's "temporary".
  • Mortgages - there are so many addons that you have no idea what you're really going to pay until almost the day you pay for it.  How does that make sense? Everything you get prior to that is an "estimate" of fees.  And it's always less than they stick you for.
  • banks - how do these guys lose money? Charge to take your money, charge to loan it to someone else, charge to give you your money back, make up ridiculous concepts like "double cycle billing" where if I forget to pay off one month, I have to pay the interest on it for two months, even if it's paid off.  How does this make any sense?
  • phone companies - ever read your bill?  There's fees on top of fees.  I pay 13 bucks in theory for phone service, plus 20 for unlimited long distance and 7 bucks in taxes.  Somehow my bill runs to 60 dollars a month, so 1/3 of it is just tack on fees - for example, that "Federal Service Recovery Fee"  (no, I'm not talking about the true US gov't mandated universal service charge  - I'm talking about the made up one that they try to disguise as a US gov't fee).  Don't want to pay it?  Too bad.  Want to know what it's for? Too bad.  P.S. - pay us to turn on your phone, pay us to turn it off, oh and if our lines don't work - pay us to fix that too.

I could go on and on.  It just seems dishonest to me for a company to try and hide the real cost.  Look guys, I'm not an idiot. It's getting very difficult to compare apples to apples with just about anything that's not a retail good.  Why should ISPs be any different?

Edit: Dear god, I've become the Meal....   eek    slywink
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Metered Internet on: June 04, 2008, 03:27:34 AM
My problem with this is two-fold.

One is the large files that MMOs want you to DL from time to time, which they want you to share your bandwidth too.  So here's the deal - you pay them and then they use your bandwidth that is no longer unlimited?  Don't think so.

Second one is all the ads and crap that download.  If they're going to eat into my allotment, then I should have the ability to decide what I want to transfer, which I don't.  It's either all or nothing.  Norton used to block all that ad crap, until the latest version, which they mysteriously removed the capability to do it and I know Firefox has adblock, which you have to choose not to view it, so it still gets downloaded at least once.

If I'm going to pay extra for the junk, then I should get something out of it. or be able to chooses what I pull down.  Annoying!

It's only available on the east coast.  There aren't any distributers out west, and it definitely isn't available in Arizona.  I've never even see it farther west than Pittsburgh (once you cross into Ohio they think it's a "Japoneez import").  When I was in Disney World recently they had it all over the place but they have a distributer in Florida.

It's everywhere around here in Orlando. It's guaranteed to be on tap in almost any bar, and it is in every grocery store as well. I bought a case last night for $9.99. Tasty and cheap!

If you only have one bank to deal with, it's easier to go with the Bank's built-in software, like Ken says.  BUT, it won't do the tracking for you, at least in my experience.

Plus, if you have multiple accounts at different banks, for example, due to a 401k and credit cards and such, Quicken can help you tie everything together and keep track of it.

The trick is to be diligent about using the categories.  If you don't, might as well just use the bank's online system.

I have used both Money and Quicken and they're pretty much the same, although I can't speak for the automatic bill paying in Money, since it didn't have that feature back when I used it in the late '90s.  I have considered switching a few times, but in the end, for what I need, there really isn't any need to switch over.

How are RP rules enforced on RP servers? It seems like any asshat with an account could make an alt there, and try to disrupt things. Do you have to file a complaint with a GM against someone, and wait the typical 4 hours for a response?

Also, is there less retarded crap like bunny hopping, yell-spamming items for sale, etc?

just curious.

RP Rules enforcement - They aren't, from what I've seen. There's a lot of arguing about whether General is ok for anything, ok for not completely RP as long as it's game related, or RP or die! (even though many point out that it's spelled out in the rules, there's still lots of fights).  In short, I mostly ignore the general channel in places like Elwynn Forest.

Asshats harassing - You're right - they do.  I have yet to see someone get squished for it.

Get help from a GM and wait forever? Yes.  But, they are less than helpful and there's often not enough room to explain what the jerk is doing.  But you do get a nice canned email claiming that they were able to investigate and take "appropriate" action.  How they do this with incomplete information (even when you say - there's more, but no room to type), is beyond me.  Of course I know that they can't tell you what they did, if anything, but for crying out loud, follow up to get the full details of the complaint first, before claiming that the ticket is closed.

Less retarded crap - YES! (outside of the high population spots like Elwynn Forest, of course)  Despite my complaints about the non-RPers and lack of enforcement of the rules, it's definitely a far cry better than a run-of-the-mill server.

As bad as this is and it's clearly way out of hand, the term "terror" and the various versions of it are over-applied these days.

Case in point, our previous mayor got caught with her hand in the corporate cookie jar of backroom politics by the local paper.  She lashed out by calling it "journo-terrorism".

There was a day when it was called "threatening" (no terroristic) and that is definitely more accurate than terrorism.  Besides, what threat isn't designed to try and instill fear/terror in someone?

You complain and then out of the blue she accuses you of what is effectively slacking and being forgetful?  After the business manager passes on the email? Too coincidental - this is a subtle slam by the boss to I can make your life miserable.

I'd even go so far as to suggest that she deliberately didn't tell you when to be there so that she could call you on the carpet.  No email or paper trail, so it's he said/she said and she now has a "disgruntled employee" email to back herself up.  Yikes.

I agree with the others that you could have been a bit more graceful in the email - next time (if there is one), I suggest a phone call and state explicitly that it is confidential.  Either way, try and talk to her, but also, do what you thought about, which is find another home to go to.
