641  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan - Early access is open! on: May 19, 2008, 11:49:50 PM
I've got to say the whole thing has been really smooth for me. No crashes. Performance is quite good. Sometimes my fps dips down to the mid-teens, but it doesn't seem as bad as it sounds. Doesn't affect combat or anything. So far all the quests seem to be working.

Just a couple of nitpicks-

A few times my screen just goes black (always during combat) and stays that way 4-5 seconds. It's happened about 4 times all weekend. It comes back normally by itself.

Another thing, sometimes npc's take ages to load. If I zone into Tortage (or into the tavern, now that I think of it), I'll sometimes have to stand around and wait for an npc to appear for up to 2 minutes. Sometimes their quest icon will be sitting on the ground, other times it won't appear until they do.

What are the yellow arcs that flash during combat? Is that the direction the attack is coming from? Is there anything I should do about those?

Can't wait for it to be back up. Maybe they'll have fixed the trader.

Yeah pure drops for gear hasn't been great for me yet.(lv.14)
Quest rewards, and merchant stuff is the way to go so far.

This saddens me as this sounds precisely how the loot system for LOTRO is.    Crafting and Quest rewards are where the good loot comes from.    For those of you that didn't have the misfortune of seeing the effects of this long-term in LOTRO, let me give you a peek of the future of a game that goes this loot-route:

In about 40 levels...you will look around and notice that everyone looks the same and has the same gear.    Very very boring.     A system that mixes random valuable rares in, you have a huge variety of people wearing a huge variety of things.    THis will not happen in a game that forms their loot system like what LOTRO or seemingly AOC does.

And for the record:   people claimed in the early life of LOTRO that the loot system probably wasn't finished.    Well... it was.   And it continued it's suckage to this very day.

frown   I'll pass.

LotRO kind of has a framework they must stay within. There wasn't a lot of bling in Middle Earth. Even so, there is a ton of variety in loot. I'm not sure why you never saw it. Higher level characters look a lot more distinctive than they do in WoW, where everyone grinds until they all have the same old tier X gear or crafted class set. No differentiation at all. I'm glad for games that are more than just lusting after the uber gear.

Is there any reason for negativity yet?  Is there ever?  If it turns out poorly, it would be time to own one's disappointment.

As a (former?) game developer myself (do pedagogical sofware now), I can assure you they are working as hard as they can to make it work.

There is a reason for negativity for people who went through the same shit with AO.  A company should be able to learn from it's mistakes and plan ahead properly the second time it does something.  Bringing the server down within 5 minutes of a scheduled launch is pretty obviously piss poor planning.

If and when this matches the debacle that was the AO launch, fine. Don't you think a 3 hour delay on an early access launch is a bit premature for the doomsaying? It's like some people are hoping for a mess so they'll feel vindicated.

Im IN closed beta..its what wont run. Heck the game was final a week ago and is at the shippers now ready to go out I bet. It wont be any better than what Im not getting to play now.

Considering they just released a 540 meg patch (that I'm guessing you never downloaded) I think it will be quite improved from the version on the disc.  I'll eat my hat if they don't release at least another patch before live.

Im up to date as of the time of the post you quoted. It was the latest big patch unless they released one today late sometime.

And I posted the problems Im having in their tech forum. Their bug report wouldn't even work for me. I even ran 2 of the check all files thing and compress archive thing or whatever..it finishes up, says there were 0 errors, then when I click ok it gives me a windows send / dont send error box.

SIGH.

Man, you sure have the worst luck with these things.

Man, that is f'ing creepy. I just lost a cat that was part of my life for 15 years. As much as I loved her and miss her, there is no way I'd want her lifeless body hanging around the house. It was hard enough seeing her lifeless for just the several minutes at the vet. I can't understand some of those comments where people think their pet will be with them forever, now. I did, however, have her cremated.

Ok ok... that's it.   I'm switching to PS3.

Sorry regular multiplayer gang.  I just don't trust my 360 launch unit to live up to the marathon sessions I'm going to put into this title.   It's due to go red rings, and I'm sure it will do so as soon as I bring this thing home.    frown    And yes Yellowking, maybe it's a little of me justifying my purchase of a PS3.   It's high time I got some use out of it other than Uncharted.

What is puzzling is that I called up to check if it was too late to do it, and the ebgames guy sounded like he worked for Microsoft.   He told me that the PS3 version frame rates are far worse than the 360 version.     It's almost like ebgames pushes 360 over PS3 nowadays because this isn't the first time I've run into this.     Wierd.

Geez. Man up and get them both, then do your own comparison.

What are the mods that require a fresh start? My wife is about to start, and I want to make sure we get any of those installed first. Also, I installed Fran's at about level 23, and I haven't really noticed any difference. Is there anyway to check that it is working properly?

I've noticed something that really makes the world seem unrealistic. When I've travelled through woods and up mountains, and feel like I'm really far out, I'll turn around and see the Imperial City and it looks so big and so close that it seems I haven't gone anywhere at all. Does that bother anyone else, and has anyone heard of a way to change it?

I participated in both the tech test and the general beta this afternoon, and the difference between the two was night and day.

Man, I hear you. I've only had my PS3 a few days and already can't stand the controller. My hands aren't abnormally large, but they sure get scrunched up trying to hold the 6A. Holding the trigger down for any length of time (Motorstorm) gets uncomfortable quickly.
