1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Online Service - more details on: October 13, 2006, 10:22:30 PM
The one thing people tend to forget when the free PS3 online vs. $50 Xbox 360 online component debate is brought up:  Sony will have the developers/publishers setting up and running the servers (and taking possible monthly fees to keep said servers up, MMO or not) that the game plays off of.  Microsoft sets up and runs the servers all the games run off of through Live.  If Sony were to take everything internally like Microsoft has with its online component, then the free vs. $50 debate can actually be fought.

I added that bold because it seems to get lost in the translation that the developer/publisher has every right to ask for a monthly fee to keep online going for a particular game on the PS3.  It probably won't happen with big publishers until it becomes obvious that the loss of money to continually run the servers far outweighs everything else.

For those that plan on pre-ordering the Wii tomorrow (or standing in line to get one on release), what games outside of Zelda will you be picking up for it?  What else that's enticing is out there?  Thanks much.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Got my PS3 reserved (a report from the lines) on: October 11, 2006, 10:47:36 PM
I guess I should have stated my "high number"...I'd put it in the 20-30% area, but it could be higher.  I'm not sure what percentage of 360s went on eBay.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Got my PS3 reserved (a report from the lines) on: October 11, 2006, 09:24:02 PM
I'd say it will be a good percentage of people selling PS3s on eBay.  I wouldn't put it as high as LE, but I think it will be a big number.  History will repeat itself and dummy accounts will win the auctions and not pay.  It's the chance you take I guess.  I mean look at Elmo, wasn't a winning bidder's name elmoisahomo?  Pretty obviously not going to pay for what they won...heh.

For how much the 360s went last year I expect more of a percentage of systems on eBay for the PS3 than was on there for the 360.  History is there and people see it as a profit making opportunity.
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii preorder = 10/13! on: October 11, 2006, 04:25:47 PM
There may be other things different, those are the ones I know of.  As far as I've read the graphics are the same, but of course the Wii version will show more in widescreen than the Cube version would in 4:3.  The big question in my case is whether I can actually stand 40+ hours of controlling the game with a remote or not.  I would think it would get tiring, but maybe that is just me.

The Wii sounds great, but it would be awesome if we could get some hands-on time with the system and the controller.  It is great in concept, but is it great once you actually use it?

I just read in the newest EGM that the Wii version of Zelda requires that you use the wii-mote for all the sword strikes (rather than having the option to use the GC controller). That's going to be a lot of thrusting. I think I might rather play the game on the GC.

This was known a while ago that the whole game would be Wiimote only.  Difference between two versions (as far as I know) are:

Wii

1. Wiimote only
2. Widescreen
3. Link holds sword in right hand (to account for the majority of people using the Wiimote being right-handed)
4. Nov. 19th release date with Wii

GameCube

1. Cube remote only (obviously)
2. no widescreen
3. Link holds sword in left hand (tradition)
4. Dec. 11th release

Man, this thread is getting nasty.  Only thing I can suggest is that we all get back to the topic and stop the racquetball arguments back and forth.  I personally think some people are just trying to rile up jblank and that's just not right because things will be said that really shouldn't be said on both sides.

I think the IPO analogy was very good, but let's take another retail analogy to this.  Recently, Tickle Me Elmo came out and people picked up multiples of them.  Are they going to keep all the Elmos that they bought?  Are they even going to keep 1?  Probably not...many of them picked these up solely to sell on eBay.  You want an Elmo for your kid by Christmas?  Cough up 2/3/4x the original price in order to get it.  Welcome to the eBay world, we live and breathe in it.

We shouldn't judge anyone that stood in line on short notice in order to pre-order a PS3, whether they're going to play it or sell it on eBay.  The precedence was shown last year with the Xbox 360, any normal person would have to be off their rocker not to believe it would happen again this year with the PS3 and possibly the Wii (although numbers are looking oversaturated in this case).

In my mind Gamestop/EB should never have opened pre-orders on the PS3.  There was word going around that they were debating this very thing.  They should have taken the way of Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys 'R Us, etc. and just do a first come/first serve on the day the system came out.  Even then I'd be willing to bet given how much the 360 sold for last year that many would be there to sell one on eBay.  Heck, many will probably bring a sibling or friend in order to get one for themselves and recoup the money with the second system on eBay.

Anyway, I have now gone down the path of the racquetball game, but I also don't want jblank to feel alone in what he is trying to justify.  Once again, we live in the eBay world where someone's shit can become someone's valued treasure for a lot of money.  Think of all the other crazy Christmas items from even before the Internet exploded (Cabbage Patch dolls, Hush Puppies, Furby, original Tickle Me Elmo, etc.)...people were having classified ads to sell them for more in order to get more money.  Then think again about chastising jblank on what he plans on doing.

I won't be getting a PS3 this year, but if I were, I would want to get the $500 model.  Did GS announce any sort of split on these?  Otherwise, I could see someone being like #4 in line or something but still missing out because the store only gets in one or two of the $500 SKUs.

I don't know about GS' splits, but before HDMI was confirmed on both SKUs Sony had said the 400k units would be 80/20 for the 60GB/20GB respectively.  So I can guess out of 8 units it would be 2 out of 8 as 20GB versions, for 16 units it would be 4 of them at 20GB.  Now remember this was before HDMI was confirmed on both SKUs, so Sony may have adapted the split since then.

Yeah, but Sony did hint that the breakdown could definitely change after the HDMI decision.  Personally, I think it's in their best interest to do so- the $500 option really is the best choice for gamers who don't need wireless and they would be doing themselves a favor to get the consumer in the mindset that it's a $500 system vice $600 system.

I agree with you on this.  The only things you lose in the $500 option is:

1. Wireless on-board
2. The multiple memory card slots
3. 40GB of hard drive space (but Sony has said you can add any 2.5" HD to the PS3, so HD size becomes moot)

Anything I missed?

Yeah, I drove by Gamestop not too long ago...line already set up.  I would think the huge stores (like in NY and LA) would get more than 16 systems, but who knows.  To me it sounds like they aren't sure of the numbers still, so the same problem last year could resurface.

Well, let me put it this way - I got the CE version of WoW when it first came out, and I still get the occasional tell whenever I pull out one of my exclusive pets (the Panda, Diablo, or Zergling). I feel that (and the artbook and music CD) made it well worth the extra $10.

Extra $10?  I thought the regular version was $49.99 when it came out and the CE was $79.99.  That would be a $30 difference.

Here's the e-mail

Quote
GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.

And I don't want to derail this thread, but yes, it has been a while...

Basically, it will be tomorrow at Gamestop/EB.  $100 down payment.  Some people on their e-mail list have gotten the information as well.

To be honest, what happened last night was probably going a little fast for this point in the relationship.  I can understand her apprehension with kissing given this is only the 2nd meeting and hopefully she'll warm up to it as you go along (chances are she will) and she gets better acquainted with you.  I would just continue on with the relationship for a while.  Chances are you'll be able to change her mind about sex if you let the stove cook long enough.

As for talking about the Catholic thing, I'll just ask you what your views of religion are.  Like I said, I'm not a Catholic, but I know a lot about it.

To be honest the screams of it not being ready are simply because people feel the bump from November to October was:

1. A fiscal move to not get into November
2. Not enough time given to even out stuff

I personally think it's hogwash and they were just faster than expectations.
22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [Cliché Girl Issues] Act 3/3: Loose Ends on: October 19, 2005, 06:39:41 PM
OK...I'll pipe in here since everyone is.

How old is this girl (or did you already say and I missed it)?  It's not unheard of to be a virgin even in your 20s.  You may not be, but there are many still out there that are.  The fact that she's frank as to why she's a virgin is, to me, a good sign to you.  She feels good enough about you to be open about that kind of thing and set the cards on the table.

I'm going to guess she is in her mid-20s.  Years ago I knew many girls who were raised in the Catholic faith.  I believe 100% of them had problems with sections of the Catholic faith in their 20s.  When you get to college, it's really the first time you are out on your own and need to find your own way in regards to religion and everything you've grown up to believe.

I'd say about 50% of the girls I knew and talked to about this years ago were sexually active even with the problems associated to that by the Catholic faith.  They all became active in college, usually freshman year.  The other 50% questioned whether virginity was the best thing or not and I'd say 50% of that group ended up having penetration sex and a quarter had oral sex with their partner(s) but never went for full penetration.  The other quarter (I think all my numbers add up) stayed a virgin until I left college.  Of note, I never went out with any of these girls...they just liked talking to me since me and my roomate were the only guys on a floor in the dorm.

I'm not Catholic, but I grew up studying the religion and somehow got into conversations in high school and college with girls that were Catholic.

Anyway, getting back onto topic, you are in an interesting position.  To be honest, given that she allowed you to some sexual things she may go as far as to do oral action or she may just go all the way.  If you're that interested in this girl and you guys go out a few more times and start to like each other more I would approach the sex angle again.  If she likes you enough she'll realize the time is right and she'll get over her fear...trust me.

I don't know what kind of relationship history she's had, but chances are if she has gone out with other guys she hasn't felt comfortable enough with them or felt like she could trust them.

One more piece of advice...if you're interested in a long-term relationship I would recommend actually going out on a date and not get stuck in a private setting where you want more than she does.  "Action" can be fun, but relationships based solely on that (and not going out and doing things and learning more about each other) are doomed to fail.

I'm with the others.  WW has parts that actually supercede those found in SOT, you just have to get through the first few hours before you see them.  However many cannot get past the way UbiSoft went over the top trying to make this game appeal to more people (ironically it did, WW sold much better than SOT).  I could do without the lame voiceovers, including the death girls that liked spouting sexual innuendos, and the hard rock beat though.

Having never played the previous game from this development team (I could go into a laundry list of reasons for not playing it ranging from delicately balancing two fields of journalism as a career to my dating and social life, but that's going to get in the way of why you're here, isn't it?), I can judge the team's newest title Shadow of the Colossus on its own merits rather than comparing it to any personal feelings or nostalgia I'd otherwise feel toward the other title.

I think it'd be pretty jacked up to hype something like this.

HEY!  LOOK!  THESE GAMES COST YOU MORE NOW!  Why aren't you excited?

LOL!! That would be very very messed up. I think he's saying it might be a universal 49.99 type announcement. Either way, I want launch titles!!

Yep, that is what I meant...it's just one of those rumors flying about since no one has said anything about price point for 3rd party stuff.  1st party stuff is $49.99 (except for the PDZ SE which is $59.99, but the regular version is $49.99), EB and Gamestop have just had the price point of $59.99 for 3rd party titles since they started putting games up for pre-sale.

Remember, rumor was that Xbox Live was going to be more expensive (also $59.99 per year) when EB and Gamestop put the pre-orders up, then Microsoft came out with the actual price which is the same as it is currently.
