If you can party up with randoms, I'm fine with 3-6 man raids.  I've always had good luck with randoms believe it or not in games that require cooperation...

We'll see. Really hoping this game is great.  If it is, I'll probably bump up to the one with the expansion pass...

ATB: To be honest, this will probably be an MMO that doesn't play as much like an MMO, but if the thing about MMOs that you hated was the loot grind, you should probably still avoid this.

From all that I'm hearing, the best way to see if you'll be interested in the gameplay over the long run is if you liked Borderlands 2's combat. It's almost the same style of shooter where you have positioning and movement, but the damage is heavily level dependent, to the point where if you're 2+ levels above or below a target, they soak up a lot of fire.

Thanks, Turtle.

I never played borderlands.

The most offputting thing to me about MMO's is that for 'raids' you  need to have a bunch of other people to do  successfully.  I can't be beholden to a time schedule and I do 90% of my gaming solo and I'm not interested in memorizing DPS charts or taking anything that seriously slywink.

I've intentionally avoided all information about this game so I don't get hyped.  I am looking forward to the beta and I am REALLY hoping I love it.  I was greatly disappointed that TitanFall did nothing for me and I stuck to my guns by not buying it and that ended up being the right decision. I hope Destiny steals my soul I love it so much.

I think the problem is that he's stuck with a do nothing congress and he's forced to do whatever he can through executive orders.  I believe his use of the latter is what's testing the bounds, but WTF else is he supposed to do?  I mean I don't agree with many of his policies but if we had a congress that actually did it's job...

Heard an interesting report on NPR about Obama's approval rating is in the toilet and one of the commentators said 'We are only 18 months into his second term, and he's already a lame duck and no one is expecting him to be able to do anything.'

Forgot to mention my favorite scene of the show.
Early season four:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Monk has just given 200.00 to the corner kids for school clothes so Marlo's name will ‘ring out’.
Mike refuses and starts walking off.
Marlo walks up to him ‘You too good for my money?”
Mike won’t make eye contact
Marlo:  or is you such a punk ass bitch you worried about where the money come from?
Mike immediately stiffens and starts eyeballing Marlo making it clear he won’t be punked.
Marlo looks back. Smirks, impressed, then chuckles and looks over at Chris.
Marlo: It's okay shortie...

I watched it like 12 times in a row.

Gives me chills.

59  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Wire: Where have you been all my life on: July 09, 2014, 02:07:31 PM
Just completed watching this again.

The first time I watched it on DVD about 6 years ago, season 2 rung out as my favorite.  The way the show moved from the streets to the ports was jarring and jarringly brilliant.

Now, I think season 4 is the greatest season of television I’ve ever seen.

Season five is absolutely the weakest of the series and this was confirmed by the fact that I remembered almost nothing about it.
The focus switch to the newspaper was very well executed and overall it did a good job of wrapping everything up.  I didn’t remember all the main characters turning out so well at the end but was pleased by it.

Every time a character died it was an event and it was almost always shocking- not necessarily that they died- but that they were people I had come to care about whether they were ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ EVERY character was SO well rounded and this, I think, is what the Wire has done better than any show ever written: it has made ever character human and flawed, but not unredeemable.

Upon rewatching, the death that haunted me most was that of

Spoiler for Hiden:
Brodie. I had forgotten he was killed and I thought for sure I remembered a scene of him still sitting on the corner at the end of the show…but apparently that was at the end of one of the other seasons.  It was a gut punch.

What really surprised me is that I found myself not liking Omar as much as I did the first time through.

Because I do these things, here’s how I rate the seasons:
4,3,2,1,5

Before it would have been 2,3,4,1,5.

Grateful for the experience.

Biggest shift for me occurred when I got the 360. Until that point I was entirely an SP gamer.  With GRAW2 and Gears of War I shifted irrevocably into the MP category and as a result play very little other than that.

The benefits are return on investment (I'm at over 260 hrs in BF4 for example) but the drawback is that I have become such a competition junkee that the goings on in SP games now are not frenetic or challenging enough for me to be bothered with. I like the hyper-awareness one enters into with competitive MP and that leads me to ask: why fight against the AI in an SP campaign when I can actually fight against real people?

That said, I'm dying for an amazing story driven game.  I've started the most recent Tomb Raider game and I see why it is got raves, but I'm not making a point to play it.  I would love another Fallout. Would love another Last of Us.  But they are the exception.

That article does not explain how the standards have resulted in the lunches tasting badly or did i just miss it?

is that kids don't like whole grain bread instead of white or is the new bread somehow inedible?

if it's the former, well, eating healthy takes some getting used to and the kids and parents just need to suck it up. If it's the latter it's a problem.

Article also doesn't tie the 'bad taste' to the drop in participation.

Have no idea what the proper story is vs. the non-proper story.

You probably mostly remember the adventures of the SDF-1 with Rick Hunter, Minmei, Admiral Gloval, etc.  Those episodes have nothing to do with the adventures of Rand and the other guys with motorcycles that turn into robots.  You probably have little to no memory of the adventures of Dana Sterling, but those were also hamfisted into the 'Robotech' umbrella despite having nothing to do with the above two series.

I watched all 3 series. Invid invasion was my favorite. macross was 2. Robotech Masters (Dana Sterling) was a distant 3rd.

And how did they not match up? Seemed to work pretty well?

Yes.  It's just that you don't see it as much because "White Man Confronted While Waiting In Line" naturally warrants less coverage than "All Black People Statistically Earn >20% Less Than White People" or "87% of All NYC Stop-and-Frisk Targets Are Black, Latino; 88% of All Searches Prove Fruitless."

-Autistic Angel

Hmm. white dude hits black kid. Stops to help. Gets mauled by black mob had almost no coverage. Neither the victim nor the mob were claimed by obama as what his son would look like.  But a 'white latino' (first time I'd ever heard of that ethnicity) kills a black kid and global headlines and obama says that's his son.

As for what you mention, The New Jim Crow is an excellent book about how we got into the situation and how we've all been manipulated to encourage the continuation of those exact situations.

Edit: Nice Red herring by the way. So racism is excusable if you're oppressed?

It's called Shooters Grill and it is located in Rifle, Colo., so naturally, the waitresses pack heat.

The burger joint, about 180 miles west of Denver, embraces the firearms theme with menu items like the "M16 burrito," "Smith & Wesson Grilled Cheese" and "Locked and Loaded Nachos." The salt and pepper shakers are made from shotgun shells. But the biggest Second Amendment statement is in the guns waitresses carry, including the Rueger Blackhawk .357 Ashlee Saenz sports.

Quote
Owner Lauren Boebert, 27, started the trend when she began carrying a pistol shortly after opening the restaurant a year ago.

"I started open-carrying maybe a month after we opened just because I am a woman in business and I was there early hours and late nights," Boebert said. "There was a man beaten to death in the alley behind my restaurant last year. It was very unfortunate."
