My thought is this.  If you can wait a year do.  There's nothing on xb1 that I can fully endorse as worth a purchase.  Its Christmas eve of the first year of release and I'm playing games on the 360.

To me it was a pretty lackluster year for games as many of the ones that I was looking forward to either got pushed to 2015 or came out and underwhelmed.

Favorite Game Played This Year: Battlefield 4.  Basically played it and nothing else for 9 months.  All the hate it got at launch was earned, but it has turned out to be one of the best multi-player games I've ever played

Least Favorite Game Played This Year: Call of Duty Advanced Warfare.  I gave it a fair shake.  I tried out the new abilities, guns, and perks. I tried the new killstreaks. I played all the maps over and over and came to the conclusion that it is just not a very good game.  Terrible in fact.

2014 Jekyll and Hide Award: Destiny.  The shooting, FPS controls, abilities, weapons, maps, ART are some of the best I've ever seen. The game is balanced perfectly and if you are killed in MP you died fairly.   But- the whole lack of content, grind grind grind, Bungie patching and ruining, and repetitive nature of just about everything prevents it from being my GOTY. I spent more time on this game than any other released in 2014, but upon DLC/Patch arrival, i simply walked away and right now I don't have any plans to go back (other than perhaps some PvP).  Game has potential out the wazoo, but right now it's not what it needs to be.

2014 Story of the Year: Gimme a Break.  So many huge releases put out in almost completely broken states.  I don't remember so many big titles being put out almost in succession and then simply not working or truly working poorly.  Fortunately, none of them were games that I was interested in so I missed the headaches...lots of folks, though, did not.

2014 GOTY: Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition  This game is fun. I'm talking old school, smiling ear to ear, proper level of difficulty, incredible (and simple) art style, great controls, great sense of discovery fun.  I had a blast. Loved it from start to (almost) finish. It's my GOTY.

Had a 17-2 match last night which is the highlight of this comeback so far... otherwise have been pretty much going 1.0 in each match.

Haven't been playing too much as I'm still getting re-acclimated to the roadie run camera shake puke.

Ran into a pretty nice guy who helped me remember how to do some things and he updated me on some changes like that ink grenades no longer stun (so there's basically no reason to use them anymore).

Still getting used to aiming (and aiming).

Maps are still way awesome.

Well, I thought Red Country was fine. I liked the returning character a lot, but overall the story was indeed a bit weak. The world in those books is so unfair though.

Yes. I was really excited upon the first hint of that character's return, but it just didn't come together the way that I was hoping.

My favorite part was:

Spoiler for Hiden:
The fight with Glama Golden.  He's only in the book for a short period of time, but it was enough to already begin relating to him- and that's what Abercrombie does best, write real characters. You get one perspective from one character and then when he switches the focus to the actual character the complexities and layers of who they really are come into view.  It was also neat to hear the voice of a character on the receiving end of the Bloody Nine

Second favorite part was:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Caul Shivers letting Lamb go.  He finally was able to be a better man.

Quote from: The Rocketman on December 18, 2014, 07:54:14 AM

It's cold, and muddy, and full of cheaters and killers, with just a few rays of light. This makes the books a bit exhausting to read sometimes, especially the Heroes.

Abercrombie has become one of my favorite authors for his ability write real characters and have them express real emotions, doubts, and fears.  There are no supermen in his books.  Also, the amazing ways he shifts the focus of the story onto background players yet still keeps it riveting and real.  So many potential characters to explore!

That's why I found the original trilogy the best: the added epicness and grandeur helps offset this bleak world.

I can see that, but there's so much Bayaz and I simply hate him. HATE him.

Return of the King Baby!  Burned out on Destiny so back to the greatest MP game of all time.

True it has been over 13 months since I played this game.

True the Roadie Run gives me motion sickness at this point in time.

True my skills have completely eroded and i don't even remember some of the basics

True I have no idea how to win a firefight or even hit the broadside of the barn.

True it will probably take me +/- 3 weeks to get back into playing shape.

But, MAN, do I already remember why I love this game so much.

Played 3 matches:

I have mixed feelings about the patch.  I hated farming, but I think resources are too easily attained now with the new patch.  At least make them a bit more costly. Also, apparently they've made it so you're not given ascendant materials for public events which m eans there's never going to be a reason to ever do those anymore.  Also, patrols are pretty pointless now too as if you don't need to farm, why do them?

Might have taken it too far the other way with the patch.

Well of course the Bills mathematically still have a chance to make the playoffs. Why wouldn't they? It's the absolute best way to keep a sliver of hope alive so that it hurts the most possible when they choke another game with everything on the line.

I have 5 days of time into destiny.  I love the game. I love the controls. I love the shooting. I love the MP maps. I love the art. I love a lot of planets and how they vary from one another.  I love leveling up my weapons (though I hate grinding for materials) and armor.

But I cannot disagree with anyone who hates the game or finds it their biggest disappointment.  It's bipolar for sure.

I thought he did a brilliant job of differentiating the different objects and capturing Auri's thought processes and writing in a new style, but like he says in the end, nothing actually happens.

There's something about his writing even in the kingkiller chronicles that I just absorb and enjoy, but there's about it and I still can't figure out what it is.

For COD to be so well reviewed, the impressions here surprise me a bit.  I stopped playing it after MW2 myself.

I'm one of the absolute stat whores, Proner is referring to. However, I have consistently been above average in every FPS game I've played (except for Halo).  I knew as soon as I played my first match of AW, I was not going to be able to compete as well as I'm used to. However, I felt the same way about Destiny and was correct in both circumstances.

There's a huge difference though: Destiny is nearly flawlessly executed, while AW is an absolute mess. If I am killed in Destiny it's because I was outmatched there's very few junk kills, bad spawns or other tomfoolery. If I'm killed in AW it'll be just as often lag or terrible hit detection. The movement feels good although not nearly as smooth as Destiny, but the weapons, maps, killstreaks and exo abilities (which are almost completely useless) feel bolted on.

The maps are largely generic and uninspired and are very much similar to one another with arbitrary points where you're 'out of bounds' without cause or explanation. It's impossible to set up a 'front line' and I guarantee you that you will constantly be getting shot in the back.

The hud is a disaster and could have been easily corrected by making the player's avatar a different color.

None of the weapons feels that great to me and this is a first for any COD game.  They did get melee right, I think, as they've shortened the range of it, but I've never been one who melee's much.

The killstreaks are the worst of any COD game and are only solid if you add additional abilities to each thus making them significantly more expensive to earn.  Not too bad, but this is the first COD game where I cannot string kills together. Even with hardline it's a struggle to get a UAV.  A lot of players feel the same way.

The exo abilities seem neat at first but they're all so easily countered, I found myself doing better when my kit had none equipped.

Add all this together and it just becomes a fury inducing game to play, imo.

I think I like Joe Abercrombie's work better.
