15281  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What'd You Name Your Band? on: March 07, 2006, 08:09:13 PM
My first band in Guitar Hero was Canvas Colors.  The name for a 'band' I was very briefly in in high school back when I played a little keyboards...

Second Band was Limozeen (thanks SB!)

Third Band and current one for Medium difficulty featuring Jonny Napalm is: Burnin Urine.  That was always going to be my band and our first album was going to be Into the Cup.

Sadly I have no talent so GH is my only way to achieve rockstar glory.

What about them did you like?

I thought the fighting was the best part of JE, but that's not saying much.

It became far too formulaic and there wasn't enough variety...

Hopefully the Jade Empire  'elements' = real time fighting and not the suck butt rock paper scissors mechanic.

Oh and I loved the combat in KOTOR...TB fighting hearken's back to Pool of Radiance (the original) for me.
15284  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Questions: With New Questions! on: March 07, 2006, 02:52:29 PM
1. What is the deciding factor on the star rating for your performance: Is it the score or the note %age? I think it's the latter, but am not sure

2. This question may be redundant: but what do you focus on the most. Score or note %age?

AC DC is a must.  They should do a whole AC/DC game.

we'll see a further "five or six" titles by the middle of 2007.

Awesome.  Hopefully they won't be full priced.

He also confirmed that genre spin-offs including Country Rock for the US and a Metal edition are on the cards.

I'd by a Christian version, but I don't think they'd move enough units...

This is fabulous news.
15289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Questions: With New Questions! on: March 06, 2006, 02:53:37 PM
So out of the gate for my PS2- as my first PS2 game- I purchase Guitar Hero.  One of the most fun games ever.  Really and truly.

Questions though from the rythm impaired:

1.  What is the best way to hold the guitar so that you can hit all five frets?  I've just moved up to medium (4 frets) and am already having a bear getting my pinky to do what it needs to.  What about with 5?  Do you hold it so that your index does the red and the green and your fingers match up 1 to 1 with the others?

2. When's the best time to use star power (assuming you're not in trouble)? On long notes or on lots of single notes?

3.  Does the whammy bar get you more points on non- star power long notes?  Or at all?  I'll stop going to it so often if it doesn't.

4. Have sequel's been announced? Red Octane is sitting on a cash cow with this.  Imagine an alternative, Christian, Punk, acoustic or whatever else version of the game.  Now imagine they put out limited edition guitars.    Or came out with Drum hero.

5. Has this game been selling well enough to merit a sequel?

15290  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / One More PS2 Memory Question on: March 03, 2006, 09:30:39 PM
Is it acceptible to buy non Sony memory?

They have 8 mb at BB for 24.99 and a 16 mb MAX at bb for the same price.

Blue shirt said non-sony memory may not save all games.

Oh and Guitar Hero is waiting to be played!

15293  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Quick PS2 Sound Question on: March 02, 2006, 03:42:09 PM
Does the PS2 do surround sound like the xbox (it hasn't arrived yet).

Separately, but equally important, is there such thing as an optical cable splitter?  What I want to be able to do is plug multiple optical cables into one splitter and then the splitter into the tuner.

Do they make such a thing?

You Know, I became a console gamer so gradually...

Not me. I got an xbox on Christmas Day 2002 and haven't PC Gamed much at all since then.

The only game I've purchased since then is Disciples 2 gold with all the expansions (I had already beaten the original years ago).

I just recently loaded up Age of Wonders II and I still have Warcraft III staring at me...but I'm just not interested enough to relearn AOW or reload WCIII.

That said, I did just buy a PS2 smile.

Yeah that worked...but why did the checkbox disappear from the regular login link?  It happened to me too.
15297  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who are your favorite *fictional* characters? on: March 01, 2006, 03:47:11 PM
I dont' know what it is, but I really like Jason Bourne as he's presented in the movies (haven't read the book).

Maximus from Gladiator is also a favorite character of mine. Savage when necessary.  Compassionate and reasonable when necessary.

Dr. Zoidberg and Frye from Futurama.

But probably my all time favorite (without giving it much thought) would be Henry 'Indiana' Jones.

Got it new off ebay for 141 bones shipped (which if you account for tax saved me 20 dollars).

It will be here in a few days and though I pulled the trigger on it before I wanted to- I wanted to play through my xbox backlog first- I'm pretty pumped.

The raves that Shadow Heart's Covenant has gotten makes me want to get it, but as I'm a bit of a completist, I'd like to play the first one first.

It rates lower than the Covenatn on Gamespot, but the user reviews are high.

Should I play the first one first?  Anyone know where to get it cheap?

Oh...and don't think I'm not salivating for Guitar Hero.

Finally, I have the DragonQuest VIII demo (cause for whatever reason I signed up for it) and am looking forward to that too.  Similar question: I haven't played this series since Dragon Warrior III on the NES.  Can I pick up VIII and enjoy it or will I be totally lost?

Thanks...and for the first time since Genesis/NES ...I own TWO consoles.

15308  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How Much Memory for a PS2? on: February 19, 2006, 06:44:47 PM
Hi all-

I plan to finally invest in a PS2 in the coming months, but having always been an xbox kid, the idea of a memory card is foreign.

How much do I need?

I plan to play God of War, Shadow of Colossus in addition to DragonQuest VIII etc.

I don't need my saved games after I've finished the game, just during.

That said- when I'm pricing stuff out/looking for deals, what size memory card should I get?

15309  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / You are outbid! on: February 14, 2006, 09:07:16 PM
I got simpsons season seven for 24.74 shipped. Good deal IMO.

I've only ever bought 4 things on ebay and they're all pretty cheap.

I set a low bid and figure my cost with shipping.  Then I don't budge.

Some idiots pay more at ebay than they could get it elsewhere when shipping is factored in...

When I finally buy a a PS2, I'm definitely going to be filling in the collection with Ebay purchased PS2 games.
15310  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS on: February 11, 2006, 02:14:21 PM
Quick question though about the wifi: does the DS' wifi only work with other DS?

Or can I, having a wifi network at my house, play against someone else who has wifi at their house in separate parts of the world?

I guess my question is: does the wifi only work when it's in proximity to another DS?
15311  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS on: February 11, 2006, 02:12:34 PM
Looks like that's when I'll finally buy into the handheld market.  I've never had a handheld (other than 20 years ago with my little Burger Time game), but the near unified praise of the DS makes me antsy.

That said, I will be buying a PS2 first as there are now just too many games that I want to play on it...and most of them will be had on the cheap...Ahh the gains of SUPER LATE mover advantage! slywink
15312  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: Panzer Dragoon Orta on: February 11, 2006, 02:09:46 PM
Finished up the game last night.  It is definitely an A rated game in my book as I had fun the whole time I played it.

As mentioned before, it hearkens back to the days of Space Harrier and I had forgotten how much I love simple straight forward shooters.

I had a great time playing it, would recommend it whole heartedly.

I think the dragon change dynamic, once you get a handle of it, is a brilliant concept.  Now that I know what I'm doing, I may just play through it again to see if I can better my final ranking (General) or try it at a higher difficulty.

I RARELY replay games, but this game may fall into that category.

It's relatively short. I'd say I beat it in about 9 hrs (9 hrs being a good length for me), though the total in the game said 6 (don't know if it counts restarts).  And...I'm actually playing through some of the extra scenarios- which are just the icing on the cake.

Well done, Sega- even if this praise comes 3 years after you released it.

I'm playing on normal and so far it has been perfect. Sure, I've had to replay some of the bosses, but it has never gotten to a frustrating level.
15316  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Lost 2/8 on: February 09, 2006, 02:27:58 PM

A solid episode if a bit uneven.

I don't buy for one minute that Locke would trust Sawyer and this episode was a total breakdown in who John's character is.  He went from wizend sage to nitwit in one episode.

Although, that was the point, I don't think it was executed very well.

Oh and Charlie able to follow Locke without Locke detecting him?  Preposterous.

However, the background story on Sawyer was good if a bit shallow.  I'd like to see a bit more dynamics come through in his back story...he's too charismatic and sinister to be that one dimensional.

Overall, pretty good, but the whole Hurley Sayed piece seemed out of place and unimportant (though I'm sure it wll come back eventually).

Edit: I know people have been saying that the show is losing it, but I disagree. However, I feel that this episode more than any other so far has been more cobbled together and without the whole 'lost vibe'.

As I've progressed further through the game (I just completed episode 7 of 10) I continue to marvel at the wacky creativity.  The story is starting to come together for me and I'm loving it.

Are there any other games similar to this on the XBOX?

PDO is firmly in A territory right now.

15320  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: Panzer Dragoon Orta on: February 07, 2006, 02:07:08 PM
I bought this game in April of 2003 a mere four months after getting my xbox.  I played a little bit of the first level, liked what I saw, but never got back to it.

Well, 3 years later,  as I attempt to clean out my backlog before purchasing either a PS2 or DS, I fired it up.  This game is so good.  While I won't give it an A, yet, I'm enjoying it immensely.

I just finished the fourth stage, where you fly around a GIGANTIC mothership.  The sense of scale was incredible and the speed of the action was exciting.

The boss on the level (a combination of a giant statue and some elite wormriders) was wholly original, a bit of a puzzler, but not controller throwing complicated.

PDO hearkens back to me of the Golden Days of Space Harrier: A gozillion enemies on the screen and you gots to blast em (I spend like 15 bucks one day on completing Space Harrier back in the day).  Great fun and though an oldie, it's definitely still a great looking and fun game.

Though I  have no idea what's going on with the crazy story slywink, I would highly recommend it.
