Well it is 5 years old...so maybe they didn't have the budget to put in voice.

After a while I think the text works and it hasn't really impacted my enjoyment.

There are some cuscenes where I wish there wasn't voice acting, tho slywink.

However, if I get stuck, and once I get frustrated after trial and error has failed, I'll go to a faq and get on with things.

That's typically my method too. I usually find that I typically have the right idea about passing a boss or finding something, it's just that I'm not doing it in the exact precise spot or something really simple.  I'm very rarely stumped.
15283  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Use of Walthroughs & FAQs AKA: Just Completed Shadow Hea on: March 22, 2006, 04:15:12 PM
So I'm about to finish my first PS2 RPG: Shadow Hearts.  I've enjoyed the heck out of it, but near the end I acquired a power I didn't know how to use.  To the Internet and gamefaqs.com.

While searching for the answer I came across a BUNCH OF STUFF (powers, sidequests, items, etc) that I missed throughout the game.

So my question is: Is it prudent to play a game with the faq close by in order to 'maximize' a game (get everything and see all content) at the risk of getting spoiled or

Is it best to play it through, do the best you can, be surprised repeatedly, and not get all of the items or view all of the content?

I'm wondering now if my enjoyment is lessened because I haven't experienced the whole game...

15285  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / April 2006 Wired Magazine on: March 21, 2006, 10:20:01 PM
Wired is by far my favorite magazine and the only one I read cover to cover every month.

This month's issue is guest edited by Will Wright.  There's 40+ pages of coverage on gaming and if it is presented like the rest of Wired's excellent writing it should be a very good read.

Just an FYI.

Edit: It's funny. The last thought I had last night was 'Did I put 2004 in the heading of that post?'

Hetz can't be the only one starting Oblivion topics!

I'm curious as to what characters everyone is planning on creating.  I'm really struggling with this.  I have been reading the strategy guide over and over again on character creation.  This is a very important decision for me to enjoy a game.  If I don't like my character I will hate playing the game.

Right now I'm trying to decide on whether to lean towards a pure mage type or a combon melee/mage type, such as a spellsword.  I'm definitely going to customize as the stategy guide suggests.  I also need to come up with a background too.  It helps when playing the game.  I actually might play two games concurrently using two different characters; one game focusing on the main quest and one focusing on doing other things.  I do have this cool idea of playing a "good necromancer" type character who's main goal is to utilize the dearly departed in an attempt to convince existing necromancers to turn good.  With this character I would pretty much ignore the main quest and focus on gathering info on the undead and what can be done to unite them for the common good.  I wonder if this is feasible in the game?

So, what is everyone thinking about?  Race?  Type?  Character name?  What direction do you see you going with your character in the game?

Does that mean people are 'downloading' that much information from the site?

Or does that mean that you have that much information stored somewhere.

So where's the best place to buy older titles without having to pay jacked up prices?

FFVII is boucoup dollars and I don't know that i'll get it.

What about Metal Gear Solid 1? Will that set me back big $$$ too?
15295  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / MGS = SC? on: March 18, 2006, 06:47:42 PM
As I look at some of the venerable PS2 franchises, I've naturally come to Metal Gear Solid.

It's intriguing and I find lots of cutscenes a bonus, not a drawback.

Questions about MGS

1. Metal Gear Solid 2 is very highly rated on Gamespot.  Typical question: If I haven't played a MG game since MG2 on the NES, will I be lost if I pick up with Part 2?

2. MGS2 was redone for the Xbox and subtitled substance.  If I'm going to pick one up, which should I get?

3. Is MGS just a sneaking game like Splinter Cell?

Thanks again.

Ok. Ok. Ok. I'm late to PS2 so what.  Shut up about it .

My second game to play is Shadow Hearts as I've heard great things about the subsequent titles.

I'm about 3 hrs into it and TOTALLY HOOKED.

Sure the writing at times is just plain bad, but I'm riveted.

Questions about JRPGs.

1. What are the hallmarks?  Beyond the artwork
2. Do lots of japanese characters want to molest the heroines?  smile    It's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen in a game...Unusual and uncomfortable Tongue frown
3. Is the FF series considered JRPG?  If so, is it worth playing this late in the cycle? Will I dig it?

That's all for now.

15316  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Songs you heard for the first time in GH that you dig on: March 13, 2006, 05:54:32 PM
I'm almost done with the Medium difficullty and have been very impressed by the song selection.

I pretty much stopped buying mainstream music after high school and when I became a Christian I pretty much focused my attention in the genre picking up a few secular artists (I love Avril Lavigne  ) here and there.

But prior to that I was a 'headbanger' and still make it a point to jam to something at least once a week. slywink

That said, a lot of the songs in GH are new to me.

I've heard of a lot of the bands, but not the songs.

There's the SUM41 song that is just awesome.

There's that Ace of Spades song that is really good too.

Infected by Bad Religion is another one I'd never heard but really like.

But I wonder, if I had heard the song on the radio (rather than 'playing' it, if I'd like it).

Any gems you've turned up that you really enjoy listening to/playing over and over?

The only real DOG that I've heard is 'Take it off' by the Donnas. Blech.

15319  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Controller Broken Angry on: March 10, 2006, 06:32:00 PM
For the first time in my life I have raged so hard at a game that in the process of slamming the contoller down, I broke it.

PoP:TTT: Dual boss battle: Guy with the Axe & Guy with the Sword.

I spent close to 3 hours trying to beat this at about the 2 hr mark I threw my controller down so hard that it tore away from the quick rip on the cord.

I plugged it back in and the rumble pack is on full time now.  Into the trash it goes.

I had no life upgrades- in fact I didn't know there were any in the game until I read in a gamefaq guide (searching for tips on how to beat them).

I can imagine that if I had the 4 (FOUR!) life upgrades that I missed throughout the game, I could have taken them in 5 or so tries.  So mad.

I finally beat them and have moved on.

ATBs top 5 Angry Gaming Moments this generation: (I don't think there are any spoilers)

1. POP:TTT Dual Boss
2. BtVS: Hell level (could not get past the jumping puzzle)
3. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I can't remember the specifics, but I kept dying at this one part and I remember being SUPER hot under the collar
4.Jade Empire: Final boss.  Didn't like the game to begin with but had to finish it to justify the $$$.  This frustration combined with his superattack or whatever it was made it just not worth it. Played the whole game with grand master on the fights...changed the final boss to easy.
5. Mercenaries: I took down the Ace of Spades, but clipping issues put him under the nuke pad so I couldn't retrieve him.  I tried the level 2 more times and then used GOD mode to get my rightfully earned (and pathetic) end cinematic.
