15201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Craziness] Visual Concepts to have (kind of) MLB exclusive? on: January 19, 2005, 01:59:23 PM
Time for the glory days of NES baseball to return.

We didn't have named characters.

We didn't have much pitch selection.

We didn't have accurate graphics or substitutions to make.

And you know what...the game was still a hoot.

Quadruple that when you talk about Bases Loaded, that had rosters of made up characters, but was still a great deal of fun to play.

I hope that cheap alternatives- minus the real rosters (isn't it more fun creating your own name sakes anyway) come out and take large market share...

Thanks all.

Turtle, you answered the question i was specifically wondering..since my jedi is female...I guess that makes all the difference.

As for clearing out the exchange in the ebon hawk...i've left the planet...never having the opportunity to clean them out...
15209  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Couple KoTor 2 Questions on: January 16, 2005, 04:56:15 PM
I'm working through the game as a Sith (haven't yet completed it as a Jedi), but I'm noting striking differences in the occurrences of events.

Minor  to medium  spoilers as noted:

1.  MINOR: Upon leaving telos as a Sith, the handmaiden has stowed away, but as a jedi, i'm all the way to onderon and don't have her.

2. MEDIUM to MAJOR- On Nar Shadaar, as  Sith, i slaughtered all elements of the Exchange that I could.  As a Jedi, I left the colony and the leader of the exchange is still alive (though I've freed the girl and killed some of his guards).  As a result (?) none of the sequences where I get kidnapped  by GOTO and my allies attempt to rescue me occured.  And finally, I've still not been able to find the Jedi on that planet.  However, with the Sith, i steamrolled through the yacht, found the Jedi and moved on.

End Spoilers

Also, as the sith, I at one point had Dark Mastery and as a result a bonus of 50 force points.  Unfortunately, I commited a decent act and that's moved me off of Dark Mastery.  Will I be able to get back to it if I continue to be a very naughty guy?
15210  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lightsaber in Kotor 2 on: January 14, 2005, 06:53:16 PM
Unfortunately I am the same way.  The reason I say unfortunately is because while playing the Dark Side, I realize how much I miss the Heal power

Ooops. I actually did take heal for my Sith character. I figure, that someone truly evil would take advantage of every opportunity and power- especially if it means that they have a better shot at killing and corrupting-and the healing power falls into this category. My sith guy is consumate evil, but he's also into self preservation...and healing allows him to do that.

On the Jedi side, I don't think a jedi would touch the filth of the dark side powers.  It's sort of like a modern day good guy vs. bad guy story.  Good guys try to kill the enemies while perserving innocence. Evil kills everyone without caring...

Small Nar Shaddar Spoiler

Quick note: I'm now on Nar Shaddar and there's the one small quest to rescue the daughter who has been kidnapped by slavers.  Even though I'm evil...I had to rescue her.  So at least a bit of the light side still is in his heart....slywink.

End Spoiler

15212  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lightsaber in Kotor 2 on: January 13, 2005, 07:14:54 PM
I don't like to mix my powers though. Good guys should only use good guy powers smile....but my jedi does have level 1 lightning.

With the soon to be SITH LORD, he can lightning for whole battles and not even use 1/4 of his force points.
15213  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lightsaber in Kotor 2 on: January 13, 2005, 06:42:18 PM

I wish I could play through the game again as a Sith.  I was light side Jedi in KOTOR 1 and couldn't play again as the bad guy.  It is just not in my nature to be nasty or power hungry.  I've tried to roleplay bad guys but I can't do it.  I see the "nasty" responses in the dialog tree and can't imagine ever replying like that.  I always want to help the underdog.

That's how I was until this game.  The 'is Kreia good or evil?' sort of mystery/ambiguity that runs through the game got me to rethink it though.  Also her advice that the repercussions of actions that we commit out of kindness may in fact be detrimental to others really caused me to think....

I was so intrigued that I had to do it all again as evil.  I still plan to finish the game as a Jedi first (there's something neat about seeing your character bathed in light looking magnificent and decent and heroic), but will definitely be going all the way to the end as a Sith too.  A Sith LORD no less   !

Minor spoiler:

As I have been playing through as the evil character, Kreia- and much of my crew- has expressed her concern about the path I'm choosing.  At one point I slaughtered a secretary and the game gave a quick dialogue cutscene with Kreia: "I grow tired of your needless brutality.' KREIA- INFLUENCE LOST.

I decided to reload and let the secretary go... smile I didn't want to lose the influence because it helps to reveal quite a bit later on

End minor spoiler.

Unless the ending is as bad as farley says it is, i'm ready to call this game my best XBOX experience ever.
15214  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lightsaber in Kotor 2 on: January 13, 2005, 03:32:44 PM
You'll have the saber for a good long while once you get it so don't worry.

In fact, it seems that people start handing them out like candy after a while.

I haven't advanced my Jedi any further since starting my Sith character.

Let me say: Dark side offensive powers really kick a whole lot of butt.

I see why one would so wish to go to the dark side.  It IS power.

My dark side guy is following the same planetary route as my good character (I've just hit korribon- my first planet)  but he, I would guess, is quite a bit more powerful than my Jedi was at this point.

That said, playing through as Sith, the game feels COMPLETELY different.  Different things have happened in many different ways.

Totally awesome.

I am- literally- addicted to this game.

Got it last night.  I'm now thankful that my wife has all of that exercise junk laying around (ball, step, hand weights) as they came in handy.  Some of the step exercises are downright fun.

I've only done one workout, natch, but I'm excited about the prospect of using its built in variety to help get my upper body into shape.

My wife is excited about it too.

It was so cute watching her try to figure out how to use the controller.

Today she's using yourself fitness, tomorrow I'll have her hooked on KOTOR!

How is it, relative to KOTOR, in terms of load times?  I don't remember being annoyed by load times in the original.

Agreed.  As far as I can tell they're about the same as KoToR.

15219  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's Official: KOTOR II is HALO 2's Daddee on: January 11, 2005, 02:12:41 PM
KOTOR II is so good I don't know what do with myself.  It has amazing character development, a WOW story and has had gaming moments that were, and are, amongst some of the very best I've ever had.

HALO2 was a good game, but other than a graphics upgrade (executed in a questionable manner <can you say pop-in?>) wasn't anything spectacular and had among the worst endings in my gaming experience.

Some have said that KOTOR II's ending is bad...but, at this stage, that seems inconceivable.  I'll find out when I get there...but that may be a while.

At 27 hrs in with a good character, I've started over with an evil character to catch up to where I am with the good one.

This is an unprecedented occurence for me, as I did not even do that with the original and replayability has never interested me in very few games.

HALO2 is pwned by KOTOR II

Congrats! I ran my first (and so far only) marathon in 2003.

It's interesting, ast it was around mile 16-17 that my knee started to go.  I lost a good 30 minutes because of the quite sharp pain- a feeling of bone rubbing bone.

What was your time?  I finished in 4:38.05.

I trained for my second one last year, but my knee couldn't handle it.  It's now stiff quite consistently.

I am beginning training for a shorter 10 mile run this week ...the race is in April.

We'll see how it goes...

My first bug?

<minor spoiler in Iziz>

The local folks decide to storm the gates as it were. I decide to step in and help our the lone 'cop'.  As i was ordered not to hurt them, i pull a force wind or whatever it's called and knock them all senseless.

the encounter ends and POOF! everyone disappears.  I don't hear another thing about it, get experience, etc.  The only whisp of it is the new terminal...

At this point, my character from Kotor would mop the floor with my character from Kotorii.  I don't remember her stats, but she was just a butt-kicker.

I was hoping for another sequel as well...KOTOR 3 sounds like a Nextbox Launch title ...which means I won't get to play it for 3 or 4 years slywink

KOTOR took me about 50 hrs to complete.

BTW-KOTOR 2 has now introduced some VERY interesting plot developments. Korriban was a very effective use of character development and there's interesting things afoot on the refugee place (who's name I can't remember)....can't wait to see what else develops!
15230  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lightsaber in Kotor 2 on: January 04, 2005, 03:56:36 PM
I've not noticed any crashes...but I have noticed that it frequently 'hangs' while waiting for the disk to spin up and deliver data.

Other than that, I've not noticed any bugs or glitches or framerate issues.

I wonder though why there are rooms with plasteel bins and baskets that can't be opened...I guess that's realism Tongue.

On Korribon, i rescued a trapped twilek in the military base, then got on the shuttle but didn't get any XP for it.  Thoughts? Was I supposed to lead him out of the base rather than go to the shuttle?  If so, he wouldn't leave the shuttle bay this a 'bug'!?

I don't know how it's possible ot have gone 22hrs where you are! Wow. You must be thorough.  Do you talk to every single person everywhere?

What's your technique!

As for load times, they're long...and frequent...and so far KOTOR2 doesn't have the magic that the original had, but I am enjoying it and am compelled to continue.

Really - if you played the first one or even if you haven't, give this a go.  I'm surprised by how much I've gotten into it.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. I'm playing it now too and it's decidedly mediocre in my estimation...

Another issue I have with Halo 2 was the same I had with the first game - the audio for Cortana. You have practically no direction (and the mission log under the Start menu is only as descriptive as "Get through Room X") on any mission, and whenever Cortana would pipe up and tell me what I needed to do or where I needed to go, I was usually going into a firefight or coming out of one. As such, I could never understand what she said because it was too low (even after messing with the audio) and I was never able to pay attention to her when I needed to. That's just stupid.

Agreed. It was the same in the first game.

I just finished it and felt gypped by the ending.  I would toss this up there with 1943's

The post credits cortana bit was a bit better, but it's just a cheap way to end the game. They could have at least closed some of the story arcs.  If we have to wait for Halo3 to see the continuation, I reckon I'll get to play it in...4 years or so when Nextbox is reasonably priced...

Also, the whole Little SHop of Horrors Plant tentacle overmind for the flood was so lame.  Every time I looked at it I thought 'FEED ME.'

I'd give the game a solid B+ overall though...Ninja Gaiden still whoops it.

My wife was copying photos to a cd last night, when the machine locked up (winxP).  She tried to do an end task with no luck, so she held the power button until the machine shutoff.

Now when the machine is rebooting, it gets to the windows load screen and hangs.  Nothing occurs other than that green bar going across and across and across.

Repeated attempts to reboot end in the same result or the 'safe mode' selection screen appearing.

Any ideas?
