15203  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Man, Beyond Good & Evil really is fantastic! on: August 17, 2005, 03:55:36 AM
Yep, great game. I loved it, but not enough to keep it in my collection.

Hmmm. what was the song they sing in the bar in the background? Very catchy but I can't remember what it was.

I loved it all the way to the end and quit when faced with a cheating bitch of an uber-boss that I can't fight worth a crap.

I never got all the complaining about the end boss- he's not even among the tougher of end bosses I've ever played against...  Beating him is simple:

Spoiler for Hiden:
His ray simply reverses the controller. Push the opposite direction you want to go until it wears off. DUH!
15204  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / This Just In: Jade Empire Sucks on: August 15, 2005, 12:45:32 PM
So I come off of a 13 week hiatus from gaming (due in large part, methinks, to this lackluster title which I started just before the break) and have a need to finish my backlog before buying my heart's desire (Pirates!)  so I fire up this game.

I quit after just arriving at the Imperial City because the lack of inspiration, boring story, lack of emotional connection to my character or any of the regular halmarks of a typical Bioware RPG.  So now I'm plowing through it just to finish it and get my 'money out of it'.

It's agony.

All the quests are 'fed exy', my party interaction is shallow and uninspired, the story meanders along without any real punch and even the combat has gotten boring.

Ugh.  This game has made any future releases from Bioware wait and sees (unless they do KoTor 3).

Progress Check, with spoiler:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I just arrived at the Emperor's Palace and he's found out I'm a Spirit Monk. A huge battle commences with an endless stream of enemies. How far until this chore is over? How many more hours of gaming are left?

Right now I rate the game a C-.

What's the deal?

Fuzz-

If I don't buy a class armor right away is there a penalty?  Meaning will I lose the chance to gain class levels: for example if I had bought class armor at level ten instead of level fifteen, would I have had 5 more class levels?

Right now I'm level 10 or so and I'm not sure what class I want to be at this point...Should I decide earlier rather than later?

Well, I made the mistake of clicking that link and now I'm into it.

however, the FAQ is woeful and you can't login to their message board until your account is 'old enough'.

Questions: My greatest frustration at this point is the lack of potions.

is it completely random that you get more?  how are you supposed to complete quests with only 1 potion?  I haven't been able to complete one quest.  I got one character to level 15 and could not beat the series of enemies.

So what do I do? battle one off monsters till I'm level 30 or what? FRUSTRATING!
15208  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden on: August 11, 2005, 04:40:32 PM
I didn't care for Ninja Garden.  The animation of the character's 'tomatoes' was completely preposterous and aimed squarely at the horny teenager market...pathetic.

Oh, and I don't know what to tell you about backlog guilt. It got so bad yesterday I had to shut down the game I was playing (Homeworld 2 for the second or third time) and tell myself "no more replaying games until you finish new ones"

Don't even make me post my list ATB!

15214  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Bad way to end a marriage on: August 09, 2005, 04:06:14 PM
Hmm.  I hope this doesn't come out the wrong way, but I'd probably just stick with the marriage....of course I've never had a sister.

However, if in 10 years I somehow stumbled upon knowledge that my wife was my sister, I don't know that I'd end the marriage.  Or would I?

I'm feeling confused and disturbed.
15215  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Overcoming Backlog Guilt: How to? on: August 09, 2005, 03:30:09 PM
My backlog (on XBOX) is not horrendous, but it is long (for me):

• Jet Set Radio Future (5/Dec/02)
• Panzer Dragoon Orta (Apr 03)
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds (30/Nov/03)
• Otogi: Myth of Demons (18/dec/03)
• Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (Summer 04)
• Metal Arms Glitch in the System: (September 04)
• Fable (November 04)
• Mercenaries (January 05)

I acquired quite a PC backlog (probably X2 the above) just before getting my XBOX. So many legendary titles left unplayed....

How do you justify buying new games when you've got some great titles just waiting for you to play them sitting on your shelf.
15216  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / WONDER WOMAN #219 on: August 09, 2005, 02:37:22 PM
Not a comic book reader, nor am I familiar with any of the characters, but I have a question about Rob's Spoiler:

Spoiler for Hiden:
How does superman ALMOST beat anyone to death? Wouldn't it basically be one punch and that's it?
15217  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's August: 2005 nearly 3/4 over: What's your GOTY? on: August 09, 2005, 02:17:21 PM
I love to ask the question, so I will:

So far this year, what's your GOTY?

Let's make it two categories (if you like):

GOTY1: Game released this year

GOTY2: Game you played this year regardless of release date:

GOTY:

Hmm. Unbelievably enough, I've only purchased one game that was released in 2005.  So I guess by default (though I haven't finished it and am not enthralled by it), mine is Jade Empire.  Edit: I guess Mercenaries was this year too.  JE stands.

GOTY2:

KOTOR2. My number 1 XBOX game of all time.
15218  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 to launch on November 4th at $299.99 per Wal-Mart on: August 09, 2005, 02:04:58 PM
Sorry, I didn't read through the whole thread, but:

Do you think that the 360 will follow the same pricing point decline as the Xbox?  By that I mean, since the system comes out Holiday 2005 that in 2007 it'll be 199.00?  That's my magic number if I get this console at all.

Or is it all relative to competition, success of sony/nintendo, etc.?

Additionaly, do you think there will be a price drop to take the steam out of the ps3 and nintendo releases?
15219  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The oldies are calling me back on: August 09, 2005, 11:58:58 AM
I haven't played a PC game since I got my XBOX in 2003 (Christmas), yet, the classics are calling me back.

I've got the urge to play some Disciples, some Civ. 2., finally finish Brood War and Warcraft III.

It's odd that after such a long time there's still that tug.  It remains to be seen whether I actually do though....

Any bouts of nostalgia going on with anyone else?
15220  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It was a long 13 weeks- what'd I miss? on: August 09, 2005, 11:53:49 AM
For whatever reason, as I begin to at least somewhat transition back into gamedom, I'm actually feeling a yearning to play some of my old PC games...and I haven't fired up my PC to game since Christmas Day (aka XBOX day) 2003 (more on this in the proper thread).

From a console perspective, I wonder what great XBOX releases I've missed in the past 3 months...tips? Suggestions? Recommendations? (I'll be checking CG reviews too...smile)
15221  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [Movie] Be Cool gets the big thumbs down on: August 09, 2005, 10:23:42 AM
My parents rented be cool and let me borrow it...though I knew it was supposed to be horrible.

So I rented get shorty (haven't seen it in years) to get the flavor of the characters again: GS is a fabulous film. Travolta is brilliant and charismatic.

In Be Cool it's as if he's a whole different person. The accent is wrong. The mannerisms...etc.

Chili Palmer of GS is SO much cooler than whomever that guy is supposed to be in BC.
15222  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Demo <broken> on: August 08, 2005, 07:42:26 PM
Again! Again! my demo disk doesn't work.

Why didn't this happen with Destory All Humans...a game I could not care less about.

NOOOO. One I want to play (and after a long hiatus) and it doesn't work.

In fact none of my 'playables' work.

I've boiled it and everything.

Not a thing.

Grrrr.  It's enough to make a guy take another 13 weeks off slywink.
15223  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It'll pass. You just need a really solid game to pull you in on: August 08, 2005, 12:39:45 PM
And the game that may have rekindled my desire is: Pirates.

I fired up the xbox demo disk and launched the Pirates demo which was the ship to ship combat mini game.  I played it for almost an hour.  It was great fun and the trailer seems like a hoot.

What's the word from my fellow (again!) CGers?!

I basically have music on all day long.  Only way to concentrate...

Bleh.

Just watched the full trailer.  No thanks.  Probably not even a rental.

Jack Black's narration just doesn't fit as I don't think he can be serious at all.  I kept hearing his character from School of Rock (great movie).

Dinosaurs?

The t-rex kong scene was pretty cool, but I'd rather see King Kong v. Godzilla... slywink.
