14881  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chrono Trigger (formerly: Now You're Talking) on: April 06, 2006, 12:39:53 PM
Forgive me while I gush: I love love love love LOVE Chrono Trigger.

The characters are fabulous, the story quite absorbing and fun and the music...ohhhh the music.  It's simply brilliant.

True it's all MIDI (I think that's what they call it), but man does it evoke a reaction from this player.

What I call the 'victory music' (it's first played when Frog appears for the first time) is smile inducing simplicity.  I can't wait to hit the next area or achieve the next feat that make it play as I smile in spite of myself.

The battle combos are all clever and although wholly in 2D they are wonderful to behold.

Finally, since this is the PSX re-issue, the cutscenes have (or were) redone in Anime style.  Fabulous!

Friends, I am in love.  I am absolutely smitten by this game.

You can go home again.

I don't know if running it on a PS2 counts, but there are quite frequent loads (from the world to the character screens for example).  It's rather annoying but not huge.

I have FFX and only paid $2.40 for it.  I've heard that it's supposed to be a very good recent FF game....so....

As for III, VI IV or whatever, I don't know that I'll be going back to the early FF games as everyone says that one of them is considered the best FF game evar!  That's what happened with VII and I just couldn't get into it.

As for Chrono Cross, I actually ordered that one first when I read that CT was a Super NIN title.  Then I found out that CT was rereleased on PSX and had to get it as well (it came bundled with FF IV which I will not be playing).

Gamespot gives Chrono Cross a 10. That's what started my attempts to get into the series...can't wait to get to that one!
14888  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chrono Trigger (formerly: Now You're Talking) on: April 05, 2006, 02:54:26 AM
After my poor experience with FFVII  I feared that the other retro games I ordered would be poorly received by yours truly as well.  For me FFVII was wasted money.  Would it turn out to be true for my two other 'retro' purchases? Was the reason I couldn't get into FFVII because of the out of date graphics or something else.  Turns out it was...something else.

With trepidation I fired up Chrono Trigger.  Within 5 minutes I was hooked.  Within an hr it had become a game that I didn't want to turn off, but after I did I found myself anxiously waiting to play it again.

The only differences I can figure between the two are that the story for CT kicks in within 10 or so minutes, the music is amazing and I like the characters from the outset.  In FFVII none of those things was true for me.

I was worried that I had become someone who agreed with the statement that graphics are as important as story...that I'd become one of 'those' gamers.  The good news is I haven't smile biggrin  Cool .
14889  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution Preorders - When? on: April 04, 2006, 05:13:00 PM
So will there be a shortage for Revo along the lines as 360 or since Nintendo isn't doing a WW launch, will they be plentiful?
14890  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'm an Addict. on: April 04, 2006, 05:11:59 PM
Secret?  The passage of time.

I played and finished Panzer Dragoon Orta a few weeks back.  I got it in April 2003.

I played and finished Crimson Skies 1.5 years after buying it.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the Sytem 1 year and 2 months after trading for it.

Halo 5 months after getting it.

I'll eventually get to them all...it's just that I keep buying more and that's just not good strategy.

I know I'm getting good deals on nearly every game I buy (20.00 or less) but I know if I had waited until I was actually going to play it to buy it, I probably could have gotten them for even less. I have Otogi from December 2003 and got it for 10.00.  I can probably get it for 4 now.

I know I'll get to it some day.  Sigh. It's a sickness.
14891  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'm an Addict. on: April 04, 2006, 02:39:17 PM
However, I always make it a point to play all my games through to the end unless it's intolerable and sometimes in spite of it (jade empire).

The only time I've left anything on the shelf is when i shifted gaming 'genres'.

When I made the jump from PC to Console, I had about 10 AAA games waiting to be played.  They still haven't been.

Hopefully, the jump from Xbox to PS2 won't result in more game castaways...

Upon purchasing the PS2, my goal was to purchase only 1 game at a time until I worked through my XBOX backlog.  Then I heard about some incredible sequels to games I'd never played and that I *HAD* to play them in sequence. Then Kevin Grey sent me Shadow Hearts and got me hooked on a franchise I'd never heard of. I decided that I would allow myself one PS2 game for every one PS2 game and one XBOX game I completed.

Then I started reading reviews of old games I had missed and went to ebay..  Then I began to search CAG religiously (rather than periodically) for deals at the bricks and mortar stores (as well as online ones). Then I bought an EB Edge card.

One month to the day after getting my PS2, I have purchased the following games:

Guitar Hero
Shadow Hearts (free, thanks KG!) <completed>
Metal Gear Solid <completed>
Final Fantasy VII
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
God of War
Devil May Cry
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts (Trade)
Chrono Cross
Chrono Trigger
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4
Dragon Warrior VIII

Count them: 14 games PS2 games in less than a month.  There are only 2 more that I HAVE to have: MGS2 and MGS3.  When will I be able to play them all? I have no idea.

Oh and I got Indigo Prophecy for the XBOX.

I need Gamer's Anonymous.

Well the other game I played from 1998 (MGS) still holds up amazingly well.

Since I must complete nearly every game I play (and I actually paid quite a premium for this one due to it's glowing reviews and word of mouth), I'm not giving up on this one yet.  But to be so uninterested at this early of a stage is not good.

Developers are the first to complain that innovation can't happen because everyone wants to play the same thing over and over.

Hopefully the revolution will open their eyes and they'll say 'hey, someone is trying. I'm going to give it my all to support them'.

14902  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I now officially don't understand Fanboisim on: March 30, 2006, 01:24:29 PM
Ok.  I loved the XBOX for the nearly 4 years that I had it exclusively as my console.  I don't know that I ever bashed PS2 or GC during that time.  I would say simple stuff that the graphic capabilities of the XB are better and having the hard drive is really convenient...but I don't know that I ever slammed another system.

As I've said a gozillion times in the past month, I got  PS2 at the beginning of March and I love it.  True, I'm cherry picking the best titles released in the past 5 years (and beyond) so it does have a bit of an advantage in that I'm almost guaranteed not to get a dud, but having the PS2 has not caused me to dislike the xbox.

Additionally, having a PS2 and XB has not caused me to hate Nintendo.

So what's the deal?

Is most fanboisim a result of having one console and not having the other?

Or is it like having a favorite sports team?  You root like crazy for your team and hate like hell any rivals?
14903  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution Specs on IGN - Less Powerful than the Xbox 1 on: March 30, 2006, 01:11:00 PM
As I've stated before, the Revo is the only next gen console I'm even considering picking up and the only thing I really know about it is that it's made by nintendo.

The Revolution is going to be successful.  Nintendo knows what it's doing.

You can check by leaving your PSX lid open and then powering up, it will take you to the Memory Manager and you can see how many slots you have open.

i did that but it only appears to list it in KB not slots...unless there's a setting that I can't find...

That was before the MGS saves.

So to the original question: 15 files = 15 blocks?

I know it was tongue n cheek, but please no drama.

It has ruined OO.

KD has done an amazing job of immediately weeding out trouble posters (except that KOTOR giving away Starshifter frown slywink).

I'd rather it be quiet than SHAQ-FU'd with unnecessary crying, counter crying, accusations that one type of crying is okay while the other isn't, follow-ups that indeed the new type of crying comparing crying is not acceptible and then finally a crier not related at all to the problem being banned.

No thanks.

Also, while I would never try to talk anyone out of playing FF VII (my all-time favorite game), I would start on Shadow Hearts:  Covenant while the story and characters from the first game are fresh in your mind.  I played them back to back, and I think SH:  C would have lost much of the emotional impact if I had forgotten some of the first game's details.

This advice has been followed. I fired up SH:C tonight and FFVII is on deck.

14914  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: The Best Game from 1998 on: March 27, 2006, 06:32:42 PM
In 1998, I was a PC gamer.  It was probably my 8th year of PC gaming exclusivity  yet there would still be 4 more before I bought my Xbox.

In 1998, among other titles, I played Fallout- still one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had...but...had I only known what I had been missing I surely would have jumped to the consoles much much sooner.

While everyone is looking forward: XBOX360, PS3, DS Lite, Revolution, I am excited to be looking backwards.

My first game for the PS2, which I got just this month, was from 2001: Shadow Hearts. It's a masterpiece and rates an A+ from me.  Where to go from there?  Further backward, to 1998 and the sublime gaming experience and masterfully crafted story of Metal Gear Solid.

I just finished it over lunch and all I can say is Bravo.

The game holds up exquisitely and the story is on a par with any game I played prior 98 or have played since.  My only gripes are the imprecise controls and the lack of field of view (but after all, it is from 98 which legitimately is a different gaming era).

If you have never played MGS, do so now.  I got mine with a memory card used at EB for 9.00.

I never understood the need for backwards compatibilty, but now I do. If PS2 wasn't bwc, I could never have experienced it....nor could I experience my next adventure: FFVII.

I also find that I'll start and restart a game if it doesn't grab me right away.  An example of this is KUF: Crusaders.  I'm very interested in the game but just can't get the hang of it...so it's in my 'active' rotation, but I'm already forgetting how to play it so I'll probably start over.

Last night I fired up the original  Metal Gear Solid <psx> on my PS2 and I'm already hooked after just an hour into it.

I'm currently playing in addition:

POP:TTT (XBOX) 95% complete
GUN (XBOX) 10% complete

I was enjoying POP:TTT immensely until this happened and have been playing it in fits in spurts since.  It has also taken me forever because a new console arrived and it has monopolized my time.
