14881  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Countdown to DS Lite: DEAD PIXEL? AUGH! PG 3 on: June 08, 2006, 11:59:20 AM
3 more days.  Is it coincidental that this has been a slow week?  As my GT bretheren seem not to be as stoked as I am about the release of the DS Lite, the week is taking even longer.

Random T-Minus 3 Day countdown questions:

1. It's fun to say 'Koopa Troopa' over an over <giggle>
2. Wouldn't Nintendo's Pro Wrestling be a great updated wrestling game for the DS?  I think so. Bring back all the classic characters. I think it's time for a new generation to behold the bad assness of King Slender, the subtle bad guyness of Kin Corn Karn and the absolute uselessness of Fighter Hayabusa.
3. I'm hankering to find my brother's old N64 and play Ocarina of Time.  I never made it through the whole thing...in fact I only made it about 3 hrs.  I always seem to lose my direction in Nintendo RPGs
4. I have a man crush on Mario.  How could you not?  I mean, every time I hear or say the words 'Ittsa me, Mario!' my heart lightens
5. I downloaded a trailer...yes a trailer. SSB Brawl.  It's still a great trailer. Who is MetaKnight?
6. I know already that because I'm grown with grown up responsiblities, the Nintendo rebirth into my life won't be exactly the jovial care free times that they were when I was a kid, but I'm hoping that some of the magic will be rekindled.
7. Who is Kirby and why does have his own games?

What part of AZ.

Back when I lived in Scottsdale (late 70's to mid 80s) we NEVER had anything like that.

AL GORE WAS RIIIIIIGHT!

Okay- thus far I'm enjoying but progress is super slow as I figure out the game.

Questions: Is it better just to kill the enemies?  I've been tranqing and choking them out, but not killing them.  When they wake up, do they immediately go on alert?  I was 90% camoed and rose to my knees with no guards around.

Suddenly I hear 'WE're under attack.' So i hit the deck and go to 90% stealth and am in 'Caution' mode. The search patrol comes around and says 'we're under enemy fire', the assualt team arrives, finds me and hi hit reset- now at this point I've fired exactly 2 tranq darts on this section of map. One at a guard who I hid well out of sight and the other at a snake.  There's no way my presense was known unless someone woke up and called hq. Tips?

What are those green frog toys that are scattered all over the map...if you shoot them they make a funny noise. Any ideas?

Is there any easy way to tell which trees you can climb?

Is there any way to tell the encumbrance value of an item when you carry it on your person?

How do you get more batteries?

So last night, to ring in T-Minus 4 days, I opened up my first DS game to be played: New Super Mario Bros.  MAN! That cartridge is small!

I inhaled deeply and smelled the glossy manual and was instantly transported back to the late 80's and early 90's.  Nintendo was back in my life after 15 +/- years.

I played some Mario Kart in college, but by and large was a PC gamer for all of the 90s through 2002.

Oh Mario, I embrace you as kin once again!

So I went ahead and bought New Super Mario Bros today.  It shall be my first DS game!

14889  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Countdown to DS Lite: DEAD PIXEL? AUGH! PG 3 on: June 06, 2006, 11:08:31 AM
For the 5 day celebration, I'm going to discuss which game I shall fire up first on my new DS Lite (after charging of course).

Right now I have Meteos (en route, purchased used), Mario Kart and Advance Wars and though I'm interested in playing each, I don't know that any one of them will be my first foray into handheld gaming.

I'm thinking I may buy New Super Mario Brothers, but I have a big problem paying full price for any game and I missed the circuit city sale on the game by mere seconds before it went out of stock online.

However, that game seems like it would be perfect for the beautiful bright screen and new handheld goodness.  Sadly, the cost is the biggest issue. What shall I do?

No, he probably just considers RR stupidly lame like the rest of us.

Now this event isn't funny, but whenever Crazy Jack Thompson is involved, he's bound to say something worth laughing at.  He gave a tip to police to look for videogames after he thought the murder resembled something from GTA.

Full story is here.

...and here's the quote from Thompson that's pure comedy gold :

"Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless your a hitman or a videogamer," Thompson told the paper.

What there's a lot of truth to that

You guys weren't kidding.  Man, it's a whole new ballgame.

I like the new innovations, but I hate that first person view is now mapped to the R1 instead of the L1.  Maybe that will make it easier.

Otherwise, I'd say that this indeed is a steep learning curve over the previous two (though I still hit the wrong buttons all the time in MGS2).

I'm 1.5 hrs in and have just encountered my first enemy troop (i listened to EVERYTHING anyone had to say) just in time to shut it off so my wife could watch apprentice. Tongue  Here's to tomorrow!

Let's chat about colors to ring in T-minus 6 days.

I usually like cool colors on my stuff- and more often than not, I like dark colors- black, navy blue, hunter green, blah blah blah...but as I've gotten older and more um, practical, I find that dark colored stuff is a pain in teh tuckus.

For example: I used to have an umbrella that was black.  If I was to ever do a quick visual search for it in my closet or on the floorboards of my car I could never see it.  Ditto my walkman or any other old electronic thing.

Now I have a nice yellow umbrella that sticks out against dark backgrounds and is easily visible. I have a fire engine red mp3 player that is easy to spot in the bottom of my computer bag....and that's why I will be getting the stark white DS.

If I get a black one or a blue one or a whatever one, I'll never be able to find it. With a bright white one, I shall be able to see it in my car, my bag, in drawers, in pockets, in my dog's belly, etc.

Vive Polar White!

Yep, there's another thread, but I just finished it and wanted a new one.

Masterful storytelling at its best.

Excelelnt character development

Amazing plot twists

Amazing plot twists

Well thought out storylines that converge magnificently.

Excellent drama

Amazing emotional manipulation of the player (I got chills at one point)

Fabulous.

MGS2 is a true masterpiece.

Good variety in the gameplay (sniper missions, sneaking, boss battles, sword fights, naked sneaking (!))

All around awesome.  I have three all set to go and may fire it up tomorrow.
14896  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Countdown to DS Lite: DEAD PIXEL? AUGH! PG 3 on: June 04, 2006, 09:11:44 PM
Actually less, but I'm not going to be tracking hours.  And some of you lucky schlubs already have it...but for the rest of us:

Whose jumping into the handheld market for the first time?

Whose upgrading from a DS/PSP to a DS Lite?

For those of you in the first category, what purchases have you made in preparation for your new toy?

I'll start!  biggrin

As mentioned somewhere, this will be my first handheld gaming system in 25 years.  I'm thrilled beyond all get out and it was pretty much New Super Mario Brothers that pushed me over the edge- that and needing an easy way to get a gaming fix when the TV is occupied of when I'm on a trip.

I have spent mucho dinero already on the DS:

The system  (116.00 at Overstock), a 10.00 case, 4 games (Meteos, Mario Kart, Advance Wars and Phoenix Wright (re-issue preorder <4 of em>).  Other things I might want to buy are screen protectors as it seems lots of people recommend them, Castlevania, New Super Mario Brothers (natch) and some of the other quirky games like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy and Kirby: Cursed Canvas).  All of it mostly financed by the selling of old games.

I'm most excited about the features of the DS including wifi- I'll need players to house me on MK in the coming days- as well as being back in touch with my Nintendo side for the first time since the NES.

I'm super excited and it's neat to be able to buy my second console in a year (PS2 in March) and feel like a gaming N00b with all of the requisite excitement that comes with it.  Now I've got to not go overboard and somehow save up some cash for the Wii.

Anyhew-  Can't wait!

14898  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Replaying KotOR II (paging Starshifter & ATB) on: June 03, 2006, 11:46:59 PM
I played through 3/4 of the game as a good character, started over and made an uber bad to the bone sith lord.  The Dark Side is much easier to play imo because the force powers are much more powerful.

Force Lightning is a must.  It kicks butt.

Max out on the lightsaber abilities too (throw for example) to balance out your lack of physical strength (as you'll be putting most of your points into wisdom).

There's another power that paralyzes people. It's  a must too as it gives you a total advantage.

Kill everything and everyone you can cause the further you get along on the dark side the better your casting ability (less force pts).

As for armor, i have no idea.  Once you get along on the dark side path, you're pretty much untouchable....at least my guy was.

Starshifter will be glad to know that I've recently sold both my KOTOR games as, well, there's no going back :p

I've had one for about 3 months and have had no troubles.

It has played every game- new, used, PS1 and PS2, with the regular or GH Guitar controller- flawlessly.

I've now got it jacked into my receiver the the limited use of DD sound is nice.

I haven't used it for online play so I cannot comment on that.

As for overheating, I don't notice that it get's all that hot.  I'll have to check...

Gonna disagree.  The game is great.  If by age  you mean the graphics, they're easy to get passed...unless graphics are your sole reason for playing a game.

The hardest part of MGS is that the controls were rather primitive and the views available weren't the best with regard to the camera....

It still rates an A+ AFAIC

I checked two targets and a walmart.

Both targets had them in stock but wouldn't break the street date.

At walmart I actually met a Nintendo employee changing out the display and she said that this walmart hadn't even received them.

She did let me handle her DS Lite though. It's pretty awesome.

Bah. Splinter Cell wishes it was MGS.

I played the first one just this year. Story was amazing and I LOVE cutscenes.

Just started up MGS 2 and the jump from 1 to 2 in terms of gameplay, graphics and innovation is pretty alarming- with regard to the better camera, new weapon types, story weaving, different views etc.

I'm about 2 hrs into it and loving it.

Solid Snake would kick Sam Fisher's butt.

So there!

But like I said, I love me a good cutscene. I can see why those who don't wouldn't like the game.

IIRC, it's triggered by drinking water and/or saving before you go through a portal.  Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to tell until just the very end of the game.

Greeeeeeat. That's what I've been doing before every one of those time portals. Is it a sure thing, or are the odds that you won't hit the bug pretty good?

Circuit City has this one on sale this week and I picked it up. 9.99.

I really loevd the first one and, rightfully, played it on PC. I've been a console gamer exclusively since 2002 and haven't updated my gaming rig since nov 2001, hence i never played HL2 on the pc.

Does the game work well on the brick or is it a toothless port?  Most of the reviews are solid, but Gamespot says that the frame rate is B-A-D bad.

Thoughts?

...sadly there was no review on GT...

I loved the series.

SoT is an all time great. No question

Warrior Within, because again I guess I'm not a super stickler about everything, was a fun a game and I still rate it as an A.

Two Thrones with the dark prince dynamic was a great capstone to the series and I enjoyed it quite a bit....though it did have my first controller breaking moment in history and I was a bit let down by the ending.

Anyhew, i thin it's well worth your time to play through both.  Skipping the middle one would be a mistake, IMO.

So far it has been a pretty good gaming weekend timewise.

I've put in a couple hours with Shadow Hearts: Covenant which still isn't grabbing me.

I started up Indigo Prophecy and man, it has been a long time since a game has set the mood so well.  Pretty cool so far, though I hear it gets weird.

I've also just begun Metal Gear Solid 2 and by begun I mean watched the opening cinematic. smile

Great!
