•  Fable- November 04 (may play through KOTOR II again before embarking on another RPG, so it's gonna be a while before I play through this one)

Just my opinion, but Fable will not reach the love you have for KOTOR2.  In fact, the game is crap.  I know there are people out there who like it, but any RPG that you can conceivably beat in 8 hours (I did this) is not an RPG in my mind.  I had no wish to do any side quests because the game doesn't make you feel as immersed in the land as you probably should.  I personally would trade it in toward something that is better.  Remember, this is just my opinion though.

Personally, I think your enjoyment of Fable will depend solely on your expectations going in.  If you expect a deep, epic, revolutionary, engrossing game (as most people did) then you will be horribly dissapointed.  If you expect a lighthearted, fun, hack-n-slash (as I did) then you might enjoy it quite a bit.

Just don't read anything Moleneaux himself says about the game and you'll be just fine.  slywink

I have no expectations.  So I should be fine.  I never read any pre-hype about any game that's in development.  I don't read exhaustive previews unless they're in OXM, I don't read threads dedicated to it. I don't do any intel at all.

If I see a game that I think I'll  like I do a quick review check (never reading much for fear of spoilers), run out and trade for or buy it if it rates semi well and more often than not love it.

Using this 'system', of the 34 games I've played on XBOX, I've rated 16 of them A- or higher.  That's pretty aweseome in my book.

People who get wrapped around the axle for a new game are crazy. How is it possible that any game doesn't disappoint them (not a snipe at Agtfox but a pondering re: gamers in general)...

14884  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Star Wars Has Impressed Me (not KOTOR) on: February 02, 2005, 12:41:34 PM
Played the demo last night. Seems like there are some innovative touches and it has made its way onto my top five wants list.

Thing about demos for me though is I get frustrated because I don't really know how to do anything. I basically just hit buttons and see what happens.

The squad interaction seemed great and the weapon modding (instead of carrying a whole armory) was a great touch.

Voice work sounded good, but I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on.

Still, looking forward to getting it... some day (http://www.consolegold.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=53314#53314) slywink
14885  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Not Buying Another XBOX Game on: February 02, 2005, 12:34:11 PM
Until I play through my backlog slywink:

•  Jet Set Radio Future- 25/Dec/02 (The day I got my XBOX)
•  Panzer Dragoon Orta- Apr 03 (Gotta get in the mood for this)
•  Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds - 30/Nov/03 (First one was SO good)
•  Otogi: Myth of Demons- (supposed to be great)
•  Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge - Summer 04 (didn't grab me when I tried it out)
•  Metal Arms Glitch in the System- September 04 (can't wait to play it)
•  Fable- November 04 (may play through KOTOR II again before embarking on another RPG, so it's gonna be a while before I play through this one)
•  Prince of Persia II: Warrior Within- January 20 05 (SOT was a masterpiece)
•  Mercenaries- January 28 2005 (next on my hit list)

Right now I'm playing Psi Ops and replaying through NBA Street Vol 2.

This rash vow is tough considering my top five wants list:

1.  Jade Empire
2. Brothers in Arms
3.  Psychonauts
4.  Star Wars: Republic Commando
5.  NBA Street Vol. 3
14886  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Simple KOTOR 2 Question on: February 01, 2005, 07:59:19 PM
I had one corrupted game.

There were a couple of freezes that occurred but I don't know that that was a result of the game or the box itself.

I had no other issues.
14887  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Simple KOTOR 2 Question on: February 01, 2005, 04:37:42 PM
I loved it on the XBOX.  Dolby digital lighsabering is fabulous.
14888  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Psi Ops: Fun on: January 31, 2005, 02:42:59 PM
Got Psi-Ops from swapyourgames.com and so far it's pretty fun.

The psychic powers are pretty neat and well implemented although some of their end results can be a tad...sick.  The story is pretty interesting as well, but it seems to have some holes in it (that may be explained later).

There's a good sense of humor throughout and the characters are interesting if a bit shallow.

So far there's not that much weapon variety but the implementation of the powers and the environments is very well done.

There have been several 'ah ha' moments.

Minor Second level Spoiler/ ah ha moment:

You walk into a room and a bullet proof glass door closes behind you.  Poison starts to fill the room and a guard runs into the hallway you just left to watch your agonizing demise and splatter you with bullets should you get our.  What do you do?  WHAT DO YOUUU DO?

Naturally, you use telekenesis to grab the guard, and repeatedly ram him into the door smashing the door and killing him in the process..  Fabulous.

End spoiler.

If you're into 3rd person action games, I heartily recommend this game.  Good fun and a new and interesting take on the genre.

Agreed.  The ending was hackneyed.

SPOILERS FOR HEAT AND COLLATERAL AHEAD

Heat: Robert Dinero should have won. No doubt.

Ditto, Collateral:  TC should have blasted the cabbie and then smoked the girl.  The end shows him getting off the train and walking down the platform.  All in a day's work.

That would also open the door to a sequel for the continuing adventures of one of the baddest to the bone characters in any movie i can remember.

Whoever drew that up or approved it should be fired...immediately.

Given the fact that thousands of people are killed every year by suicide bombs, I can't even believe this commercial got made.  It shows a total lack of morals and decency.

I can't wait for the commercial based in Indonesia showing a vw driving over dead people and the end reading 'a comfortable ride no matter what.'

14900  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / KOTOR II: Changed for the Experience (spoilrs in l8r posts ) on: January 22, 2005, 11:28:59 PM
Where does one go after completing a masterpiece?  What possible next game experience will not be a let down unless one has the fortune to head directly into another sublime experience?

That is my quandary after completing KOTOR II.  The feelings are still fresh, but I am ready to tab this my number one XBOX game of all time…possibly my number one game of all time… but let’s not be hasty.  Having played Civ II, Disciples II and HOMM III back in my PC days, I have to be rational…and get some distance between the games end, the afterglow, and let history record the result.

KOTOR II has been an absolute obsession to me since cracking it open on Christmas Eve.  I started as a Jedi Master and was so captivated, that half way through, I began again as a Sith Lord.  My intent was to catch him up to where my original character was and resume the Jedi path- but my Sith Lord was just too powerful.  He is Lord of the Sith Lords.   How can I make such a claim?  I put a disproportionate  amount of attribute points into Wisdom, the foundation to the Force strength and affinity.  He was absolutely overwhelming to his foes...

The story in KOTOR II is not a tidy thing.  But are the stories of life nice and neat?  Who’s evil? Who’s not? Who is beyond redemption?  Who can be saved?  Who would choose the dark side and who would be corrupted by the charisma of the truest of all Sith Lords?

The pacing was flawless.  The character development the most complete of any game I can remember.  The writing, finer than most of the most highly acclaimed ‘cinematic events’ I’ve ever sat through.

But there’s something beyond-  I think the game may have…changed me.  In some small way, I’m wiser and more thoughtful as a result of playing it.  I found myself so enamored and so deeply held by the master craft of this story, that at times I forgot that it was a game- it seemed…almost spiritual.

Was it perfect? By no means.  Was it a seminal gaming experience?  Without question.

I remember being moved by the original KOTOR as well.  There’s something amazing about the mechanics of choosing to be good or evil in these games (far more compelling than Fable...or any other game with such avenues that I've played).  It spills over into real life; into our thought processes for nearly every action we take: After getting home from work do I clean the dirty dishes that my wife didn’t get to or do I get annoyed that the kitchen is not as clean as I *think* it should be?  Do I take the extra time and energy to shovel my neighbor’s walk or do I not and think to myself ‘if they slip and fall, things like that happen in life’?  Do I contribute to Tsunami relief to provide even the smallest measure of comfort or do I chalk it up to ‘***t happens?’

KOTOR II could be component  material for a philosophy course:

Instructor: You will be playing through Knights of the Old Republic II.  In this game you will have the opportunity to perform good and humane actions (light side) or those that cause harm and corruption (dark side).  The only rule for this assignment is be true to yourself…or to the self that you keep in chains-tucked away, unseen by anyone because it is too terrible.

What a game.

Now, I'm not saying that I haven't pondered on this level before regarding the choices one makes in one's life.  As one who struggles to seek after Christ, I ponder them often...KOTOR II was just another facet, a different perspective, a different retelling of some of the those struggles...

Loyalty schoyalty! says Portnoy over on OO.

Got me thinking.  I believe this has been discussed here before, but does your fanboyism translate into the moves you'll make with your nextgen console $$$?

I'm a huge XBOX fan and I'm hoping that Nextbox is a better a system than the other NextGen systems.  However, if it turns out that the PS3 or whatever is a better system, I'll go that way...but not for a long time.  (ATB don't pay no full price for consoles and prefers to come to the party late so the libraries are big and the kinks worked out).

I'm sure most would agree, but there are still people in this country who refuse to drive chevy's cause their papa's papa's papa's papa drove a ford and so will they.

Thoughts?

Time for the glory days of NES baseball to return.

We didn't have named characters.

We didn't have much pitch selection.

We didn't have accurate graphics or substitutions to make.

And you know what...the game was still a hoot.

Quadruple that when you talk about Bases Loaded, that had rosters of made up characters, but was still a great deal of fun to play.

I hope that cheap alternatives- minus the real rosters (isn't it more fun creating your own name sakes anyway) come out and take large market share...

14915  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Couple KoTor 2 Questions on: January 16, 2005, 04:56:15 PM
I'm working through the game as a Sith (haven't yet completed it as a Jedi), but I'm noting striking differences in the occurrences of events.

Minor  to medium  spoilers as noted:

1.  MINOR: Upon leaving telos as a Sith, the handmaiden has stowed away, but as a jedi, i'm all the way to onderon and don't have her.

2. MEDIUM to MAJOR- On Nar Shadaar, as  Sith, i slaughtered all elements of the Exchange that I could.  As a Jedi, I left the colony and the leader of the exchange is still alive (though I've freed the girl and killed some of his guards).  As a result (?) none of the sequences where I get kidnapped  by GOTO and my allies attempt to rescue me occured.  And finally, I've still not been able to find the Jedi on that planet.  However, with the Sith, i steamrolled through the yacht, found the Jedi and moved on.

End Spoilers

Also, as the sith, I at one point had Dark Mastery and as a result a bonus of 50 force points.  Unfortunately, I commited a decent act and that's moved me off of Dark Mastery.  Will I be able to get back to it if I continue to be a very naughty guy?

Unfortunately I am the same way.  The reason I say unfortunately is because while playing the Dark Side, I realize how much I miss the Heal power

Ooops. I actually did take heal for my Sith character. I figure, that someone truly evil would take advantage of every opportunity and power- especially if it means that they have a better shot at killing and corrupting-and the healing power falls into this category. My sith guy is consumate evil, but he's also into self preservation...and healing allows him to do that.

On the Jedi side, I don't think a jedi would touch the filth of the dark side powers.  It's sort of like a modern day good guy vs. bad guy story.  Good guys try to kill the enemies while perserving innocence. Evil kills everyone without caring...

Small Nar Shaddar Spoiler

Quick note: I'm now on Nar Shaddar and there's the one small quest to rescue the daughter who has been kidnapped by slavers.  Even though I'm evil...I had to rescue her.  So at least a bit of the light side still is in his heart....slywink.

End Spoiler

I wish I could play through the game again as a Sith.  I was light side Jedi in KOTOR 1 and couldn't play again as the bad guy.  It is just not in my nature to be nasty or power hungry.  I've tried to roleplay bad guys but I can't do it.  I see the "nasty" responses in the dialog tree and can't imagine ever replying like that.  I always want to help the underdog.

That's how I was until this game.  The 'is Kreia good or evil?' sort of mystery/ambiguity that runs through the game got me to rethink it though.  Also her advice that the repercussions of actions that we commit out of kindness may in fact be detrimental to others really caused me to think....

I was so intrigued that I had to do it all again as evil.  I still plan to finish the game as a Jedi first (there's something neat about seeing your character bathed in light looking magnificent and decent and heroic), but will definitely be going all the way to the end as a Sith too.  A Sith LORD no less   !

Minor spoiler:

As I have been playing through as the evil character, Kreia- and much of my crew- has expressed her concern about the path I'm choosing.  At one point I slaughtered a secretary and the game gave a quick dialogue cutscene with Kreia: "I grow tired of your needless brutality.' KREIA- INFLUENCE LOST.

I decided to reload and let the secretary go... smile I didn't want to lose the influence because it helps to reveal quite a bit later on

End minor spoiler.

Unless the ending is as bad as farley says it is, i'm ready to call this game my best XBOX experience ever.

You'll have the saber for a good long while once you get it so don't worry.

In fact, it seems that people start handing them out like candy after a while.

I haven't advanced my Jedi any further since starting my Sith character.

Let me say: Dark side offensive powers really kick a whole lot of butt.

I see why one would so wish to go to the dark side.  It IS power.

My dark side guy is following the same planetary route as my good character (I've just hit korribon- my first planet)  but he, I would guess, is quite a bit more powerful than my Jedi was at this point.

That said, playing through as Sith, the game feels COMPLETELY different.  Different things have happened in many different ways.

Totally awesome.

I am- literally- addicted to this game.
