Now that I'm in the groove I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit more.

Some of the save points are too far apart, but it's a worthy sequel.  It's no where near as good as SOT, but it's fun for me.

The level design is still awe inspiring.

Ep 1: Terrible
Ep 2: Quite good, IMO. Really.  Some of the dialogue is horrific, but overall I enjoyed. Picked it up for $10.00 on DVD.  Great purchase

Ep3:  I know NOTHING about where teh story goes now other than HC turning into DV and that's how I'm trying to keep it.

I am looking forward to this movie- I've seen the previous 2 in the theater- and hope to enjoy it.

I don't have mile high expectations as some do...I just hope it turns out as good as it looks.

PS. (If anyone chimes in with Beyond Good and Evil they should be kicked in the eyeball!)

It wasn't that BG&E's boss was so tough so much as it was like playing a different game.  For 99% of the game you use your brains to get around combat, then suddenly are forced into a combat situation.  That is what I found annoying.

Tough, because I'll mention it. Combat is fun in the game, but it's not the main focus, then out of left field you're thrown into a tough all-combat situation, then they invert the &*%&ing controls on you. Got mostly past him, then he'd hit me with cheap shots where I couldn't touch him. At that point I said screw it and haven't looked back.

It wasn't that tough of a boss...really! it wasn't!
14844  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I loath incredibly tough final bosses on: March 09, 2005, 03:47:59 PM
Clive Barker's Undying had a horribly hard end boss if I recall correctly.

So did MDK2.

Mike Tyson in MT's Punch Out was amongst the worst. Never did beat him...I got two knockdowns but could never get  the 3rd.

Inspired by Farley's thread...

I reckon there should be spoiler alerts...if you provide too much detail.

Original Legend of Zelda Spoiler:

Gannon in the original Legend of Zelda was a perfect end boss.  You had to figure out the right combo and then blast him with the silver arrow.  I remember beating him and calling up my friend to come over and see.

End LOZ spoiler

Actually all the bosses in LoZ were pretty remarkable.

Additionally, for whatever reason, I really enjoyed the last boss fight in Ninja Gaiden.

14849  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia: Warrior Within on: March 07, 2005, 05:43:45 PM
Finally playing this and I'm both pleased and not.

Much has been said about the Prince's darker edge.  I don't mind it as I can totally see myself getting all medieval if some creature of my nightmares was hunting me every day...

But, my biggest gripe is with the combat.  It is so complex and involved now, compared to the original.  I really enjoyed the combat in POP (though many did not) and think it has become a bit convoluted.  I speculate that they saw Ninja Gaiden's move list and tried to duplicate it.  However, I didn't have much trouble NG's moves.  The moves in POP:WW seem ineffective (especially in boss fights) as they're easily blockable.  I'm fighting that thong girl for the second time and i've died like 30 times (as I did the first time as well).

Anyhow, I think the level design and puzzles are great so far and still think this is one of the finest franchises out there.  Great fun.

Edit: The heavy metal sound track (even though I grew up a headbanger) doesn't match the game.  It stinks and thus I have it turned nearly all the way down.

Invisible mines, rampanther? Did you forget about your night vision goggles?

I used that Psi ability that allows you to see the mines, but for some reason I found them amazingly hard to bypass in certain areas. In one particular area I died about 10 times in a row despite creeping at a snail's pace.

Still a good game, however. I love using my powers to slam enemies into their friends and then quickly toss them over the side of the building

All I know is that I died more time on those mine levels than I ever have in any game ever.  It was one of the most frustrating sequences in a game I've ever played through in my entire life.  Still gave the game a solid B and would definitely go for a sequel.

I've only ever pre ordered one game: Ninja Gaiden.  It was a masterpiece.

Bioware is developing JE so if they borrow heavily from the KOTOR formula (which it seems they are) then this game is going to be a big fat hit and play like a dream.

That said, I rarely buy into ANY pre game hype, but bioware's track record and my experience with their previous products leads me to believe this is a safe bet.

I'm still searching for preorder deals as I think this will be only the 2nd game i've payed full price for in some 40 purchases...

I come here for console related game topics and to OO for the general stuff...but since the split general topics and p/r based discussions just don't interest me as much.

However, I post here much more frequently.

I have a .40 ppd at OO and a whopping .53 here...but keep in mind i didn't start posting here frequently until GG went down so I had a 3 month or so lead in with basically no posts while GG was up.

CG is the first forum I check and is 'home' now.

But, that said, I don't usually check the main page.  I'm not into previews or much gaming news...and the only time I look for a review is when I'm interested in purchasing a game...Even then I usually only look at the score so as not to get any unintentional spoilers....

And I thought the boom was awesome. Each to their own, I guess. I'm on the Diamonds and the new map and still loving it. The challenge is definitely going up, and I'm having to approach each card differently which is way cool. For example, I stumbled onto the 8 of hearts last night and he was surround by tanks. I did a precision strike on one of the tanks that set off a chain reaction. I found his body several feet from where he started, but then another couple of tanks came over the hill and killed me. I have no idea how I'm going to handle that one in the future as I turned it off then. smile

That's good to hear.  Basically all the club missions (with the exception of the ace) were straight up the middle run and gunners.  Glad to see all the toys that I didn't need to use in those missions will come in handy later.

yeah man you are gonna get harder missions starting right now with the diamonds but the game does not really get challenging untill the face cards for the hearts.  As for how you feel about the game, the whole thing will play out just like the clubs did, so if you really dont like it now there is nothing later in the game that is going to change your mind.  Now how you can come away with a meh feeling after bunkerbusting that huge tower in the ace of clubs mission, ill never know.

I was underwhelmed by the explosion....everyone said bunker busters are amazing...not much happened...

Forgive me if this has been covered in another thread, but I don't want to stumble upon any spoilers.

I closed out the Clubs deck last night and I have a decidedly 'eh' feeling about the game.

Does the gameplay change as you move forward?  I just seem to drive from place to place kill some NK, run a random faction mission and repeat.

Where's the intrigue?

Will the factions become more important as the game progresses? Will there be real choices I have to make- play one against the other with consequences?

Chinese Faction Spoiler-

I did the mafia hit, only because that was the only way to find the Queen and the 9.  Initially I refused because I didn't want to jepordize my access to Merchant of Menace...

I did the job and WAS detected (as Chinese, not as the merc) and there's been no fall out...that I can tell.

End Spoiler

Also, I'm playing through as the American and he's not doing it for me.  I had originally started with the Swede, but again, blah..  Is the girl any good?

Who's your favorite merc?

And does it get HARDER?

14868  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / KOTOR 2: Kreia is... [No Spoilers] on: February 09, 2005, 04:13:55 PM
Kreia is one character I took with me on all planets except where I wasn't allowed to.  She was just so mysterious and insightful.  An amazing character to be sure.

I'm not sure how it will play out, but I made every effort to keep my influence up with her as a Sith  Lord  (even to the point of reloading scenarios that caused a drop) because she is the lynchpin to the story and as far as I could tell, you wouldn't get the whole story unless you got it from her.

When I eventually finish my Jedi (or create a new one) it'll be interesting to see how much of the story is 'missed' because of conflicting ideologies.

I swear I just want to take my newly crafted, green-colored lightsaber and slice that hooded head off her!

Yeah that thought went through my mind on numerous occasions.

What a game indeed!

14874  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries: 'GTA-like' ? on: February 07, 2005, 02:50:45 PM
I've never played a GTA game as the subject matter is a turn off, nor have I really seen it in action.

I started up mercenaries this week and am enjoying it quite a bit so far.

I've seen in many write ups of Mercenaries that state that it is 'GTA-like'.  How so?  Is this now a generic term to mean open ended gameplay?

Or is M similar to GTA because there's a hierarchy of quests like M's deck of 52...

Anyone know of any games that are similar to Mercs?
14875  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: Psi-Ops on: February 06, 2005, 01:12:28 AM
Overall I'd rate the game a solid B.  If they make a sequel, I'll be on board.

The game is short (and for me to say that means that most gamers probably finished it in a day) but long enough to effectively showcase the awesome graphic effects and psychic powers.  I think the physics in this game may be the best I've ever seen.  Fabulous.

The cut scenes are pretty good as is the story, but with regard to the latter it seems that there were some holes.

Now for the gripes: Spoilers

1. Most of the boss battles require the same exact technique.  You TK until the thing is dead.  Would have liked to see a little variety

2. The levels with the psi mines were among the most frustrating I've ever played in any game.  People thought Ninja Gaiden was difficult?  I walked through that game without much effort but must have died 50 times on that psi mine level.  I was so HOT under the collar...

3. Why does every game these days have to have aliens of some sort in it?  I thought it was a cheap and annoying device.  I would have much preferred if they'd created another enemy trooper...  This peeve though extends to many games these days and I'd add it to Merrits things that annoy me about console gaming...though I don't think that it's just limited to consoles...

End gripey spoilers

Begin Ending discussion: Comparing PSi Ops  ending to Halo2.  Spoilers, natch.

For whatever reason I though the ending of this game was perfect.  The to be continued was effective and didn't make me feel cheated.  Why is that?  I dunno. It just seemed to fit...sort of like the ending of Spiderman 2.  It's a cheap gimic in many movies and games, but for Psi ops it worked.  With Halo2 I felt like the game shouldn't have ended yet.  I don't know what the difference is...

End End game spoilers.

If you like 3rd person action games, I'd heartily recommend it!

14878  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Five things that irritate me about console gaming on: February 04, 2005, 02:53:45 PM

1. Combo's for everything. Sure, I understand combs for fighters. In fact, remembering the pattern and timing of button combinations are the heart of fighter game play and I'm cool with that. Its one of the reasons why I don't play fighters but I'm not going to protest. However it seems EVERY game wants you to do combos these days. Its really dragging down my enjoyment of Xmen Legends.

Eh. I can see where you're coming from. But I think if combos are fluidly implemented (like Ninja Gaiden) they add to the enjoyment because it ups the skill factor.  Combo use in Gladius was implemented outstandingly well...though I guess that wasn't a 'true' combo system...

2. Dual analog sticks in third person games. I remember that third person action games didn't use to be so hard when we just used one analog stick or the dpad. Aiming is an extreme chore and drains the fun right out of games of the genre.

Agreed.  I much prefer the D-pad, but have gotten used to the 2nd analog stick.  I would love it if the dpad was the main control and the analog stick was the 2ndary menu/task instrument.

3. Forward - back - strafe? This sort of goes with number 2. In third person games, game developers almost always put strafing controls with the forward and backwards motion. I think having forward, back, and turn left or right controls as one stick makes far more sense. Its like steering then. Simple things like Doors get me very angry. I moving forward and then I slightly strafe and hit the wall and start sliding around.

I disagree.  Back in the PC days hitting a separate button to strafe sucked.

4. Save points on Xbox. Why? It has a hard drive, use it. So what if their big, I'm not using it for anything but saved games. I played one game in two years on my Xbox, Knights of the Old Republic and it allowed me to save were I want. Why is this such a problem?

I'm with ya.  Though I used so many save points in KOTOR2 (170+ each about 1600 blocks) that I almost ran out of HD space!

5. Bonuses if you finish the game. Why would I want extra costumes or characters if I finish a game. I already finished it, what good is it to me?

I love the bonuses.  It's like getting a dvd with extra content.  The added features are a reward of sorts and the more the better.  I haven't completed Ninja Gaiden the second time through, but it was pretty awesome to start over with a new sword.
