14841  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Lost 2/8 on: February 09, 2006, 02:27:58 PM
Spoilaz

A solid episode if a bit uneven.

I don't buy for one minute that Locke would trust Sawyer and this episode was a total breakdown in who John's character is.  He went from wizend sage to nitwit in one episode.

Although, that was the point, I don't think it was executed very well.

Oh and Charlie able to follow Locke without Locke detecting him?  Preposterous.

However, the background story on Sawyer was good if a bit shallow.  I'd like to see a bit more dynamics come through in his back story...he's too charismatic and sinister to be that one dimensional.

Overall, pretty good, but the whole Hurley Sayed piece seemed out of place and unimportant (though I'm sure it wll come back eventually).

Edit: I know people have been saying that the show is losing it, but I disagree. However, I feel that this episode more than any other so far has been more cobbled together and without the whole 'lost vibe'.

As I've progressed further through the game (I just completed episode 7 of 10) I continue to marvel at the wacky creativity.  The story is starting to come together for me and I'm loving it.

Are there any other games similar to this on the XBOX?

PDO is firmly in A territory right now.

I must have missed em.

And ever since the Betrayal at KOTOR (you traded both KOTORs away?!) how could I possibly....go on?

I have mad love for Panzer Dragoon Orta!

I bought this game in April of 2003 a mere four months after getting my xbox.  I played a little bit of the first level, liked what I saw, but never got back to it.

Well, 3 years later,  as I attempt to clean out my backlog before purchasing either a PS2 or DS, I fired it up.  This game is so good.  While I won't give it an A, yet, I'm enjoying it immensely.

I just finished the fourth stage, where you fly around a GIGANTIC mothership.  The sense of scale was incredible and the speed of the action was exciting.

The boss on the level (a combination of a giant statue and some elite wormriders) was wholly original, a bit of a puzzler, but not controller throwing complicated.

PDO hearkens back to me of the Golden Days of Space Harrier: A gozillion enemies on the screen and you gots to blast em (I spend like 15 bucks one day on completing Space Harrier back in the day).  Great fun and though an oldie, it's definitely still a great looking and fun game.

Though I  have no idea what's going on with the crazy story slywink, I would highly recommend it.
14846  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Treadmills - Which one would you choose on: February 07, 2006, 01:54:08 AM
The life fitness looks more heavy duty.

Buy the most expensive one  (read: quality) you can afford.  A treadmill has to take a lot of punishment.

Don't get wooed by too many doohickeys and doo dads.  Durability is the key.

14850  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: BIA: Hill 30 on: February 06, 2006, 01:41:55 PM
Finished the game yesterday (as I feel obligated to finish every game I buy (unless it's REALLY REALLY REALLY bad) to legitimize the investment).

The inflexibility of the levels is ultimately the downfall of the game.

The extras bump it up half a letter in my book as reading the actual after action reports and seeing the sites 60 years later was fascinating to me.

They tried to develop the characters, but didn't do it enough.  I didn't care about the men and knowing that they'd be back for the next mission, I didn't take any care with how I had them attack.

Oh and the AI flat out stinks.  I had two tanks in a pinscer move on a panzer and instead of firing with the main guns they opened with machine guns.  Gimme a break.

And since when won't a tank round take out a machine gun nest?

Some of the levels were quite exciting to play through (like Cole's charge, clearing towns etc), but the scale is all off.

I think a great premise for a WWII game would be focused on a single town and clearing. Perhaps two dozen missions just on one town.  From teh initial assault, to house to house to the final expulsion of the enemy.

Or make the whole game the D-Day invasion.  That's it.

Oh well.

I give BIA: Hill 30 A C+.

As someone who actually finished BiA, I can say it does get better, but this is always an issue: "narrow" levels which limit your movement / flanking options and force you down specific paths.

I liked BiA, but the restrictive level design sapped a lot of its tactical potential, making it a lot more puzzle-y, as others have said - kinda like the Commandos games, in a weird sort of way, actually.  BiA:EiB is better so far - somewhat larger, more open levels - but still problematic.

Exactly- There have been half a dozen times so far where the perfect flank would have been around a house....naturally I investigate only to find no way around.  I don't know that I'll be signing up for the sequel. We'll see though.

The fact that you have to beat the game on the hardest difficult to open them all is not my preference,

Yep. Definitely don't love the game enough to replay it after I finish it.  No chancerino.

Well I'm a little further in and although the game is not the greatest ever, I'm enjoying it more.

What hooked me in was the extras- reading about the exploits of the actual squad on which the game is based.  Really great stuff.

One minor thing that bugs me is that this isn't true.  The game is based on actual events but it wasn't a single unit that experienced them all.  Basically they "cherry-picked" interesting situations from the Normandy campaign as a whole.  It makes for a more interesting game but isn't a reflection of actual events.

Well the documentation in the extras is authentic i would guess: there's one story in particular about a sargent and private going door to door and wiping out over 30 germans.  Amazing stuff.

I know that a lot of people had issues with the camera, but for whatever reason I never did.  I didn't find the Alma boss fight maddeningly difficult as many did either.   You're right about her tells though....

I really need to go back and play this game...Curse my backlog!
14858  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Has There Ever Been a Better Trilogy than POP? on: January 31, 2006, 01:01:08 PM
I am in the midst of the masterpiece that is The Two Thrones and I got to wondering if there has ever been a better gaming trilogy- the games have delivered for each and every outing.

Lots of people had problems with POP:WW, but I didn't and I thought the game- and especially the boss battles- were a very good time.

SoT- was an all time classic as far as I'm concerned.
TTT- while I'm only about 4 hrs in, is right up there as well- some of the new 'innovations' like the dagger hang and the whole Dark Prince mechanic are wonderful.

ATB's Grades of the Series

PoP:SoT: A+ A sublime Title
PoP:WW A A great game, but not quite as good as SoT
PoP: TTT- Already and A+.

That said, I would chunk the KOTOR series in the greatest trilogies ever, if the third one is made and I play it and it rocks.  But that remains to be seen.

There was Wing Commander (if I recall the 3rd one was the last one before it got so bloated with FMV that it got to be too much).

Others?

Spoiler-

I've just completed the mission after Matt Baker's Tank driving friend is nixed.  The mission after it is to clear out a town- these are the kinds I like.  Enemies all around and you have to move from place to place hunting them down. Then BAM- there's a panzer that blows you to pieces!

Pretty cool.

Now that I think of it, that may be why I liked the episode and most other Lost fans didn't- it was all about having previously established stories advance in some way, it was not at all about introducing any NEW mysteries or questions. This is what I've been wanting the show to do for a long time now.

I'm fine with episodes that don't advance the plot- as long as it centers around character development in some way.  Obviously, given what i said previously, this sounds opposite to it.

But for whatever reason, this episode just didn't do it for me. Glad you liked it, but it wasn't for me.

My favorite episodes have been about Dan Dae Kim's character and I can't wait till they explore him and his marriage some more.

I'm nowhere near ready to abandon this show like so many seem to be. It's still my most anticipated show of the week (until survivor comes back on slywink.

This game was praised from up in the rafters.

True, I'm only about 3 missions in and have control of only one guy, but what's all the hub-ub bub? Does it get better?  I mean I can only flank and kill so many times before I think this is Full Spectrum Warrior redux.

Plus, I feel so hemmed in by the designers.  I see a perfect flanking opportunity, and it's blocked by a fence that I, as an elite 101st airborne paratrooper, cannot jump over.  Does it get better?
14864  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 01/18/06 - FIRST HOLY CRAP of 2006! on: January 27, 2006, 01:45:49 PM
I'm going the other way on this one.  I love Charlie's story, but I thought this was one of the worst episodes they've had.  Sure, saving the baby has great potential, but the whole baptism thing was way out of place and preposterous. (BTW- the show's baptism definition is all wrong....)

It seems to me they are begining to villify Locke a bit now.  Some of the camera angles made him look sinister.  Glad he gave charlie a beat down though...it was an appropriate response given the circurmstances.

Hi all.

I just got a new HD tv and have properly connected the xbox to it using the proper HD adapter and turned on the HD options in the xbox.

Now, how do I tell the difference between the appearance of the game in HD mode vs regular mode?

Is something supposed to be crisper? Sharper? Are there tell tale signs that it's HD vs regular picture?

Also, one game I checked, KOTOR 2 is VERY dark.  What's that about? The other games I've checked seem fine,  but KOTOR 2 is almost unplayable because it's so hard to see what's going on..  thoughts?

14878  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Playing XBOX on a Laptop? on: December 21, 2005, 01:20:02 PM
Hi all- As I prepare to move, I'll be needing an interim way to get my XBOX fix. Any way to play it through a laptop?

I have a an Angel TV tuner for my Dell 9300 laptop that plugs in via USB 2.0.

The tuner as an S vid input and two audio inputs.

Is it possible to use the SVID and audio inputs to send my XBOX signal into my laptop?

If so, how would I get xbox images to be 'associated' with a channel so that the laptop will recognize it as such?

Anyone tried this before?

It's only a temporary situation, obviously, but since I'm on the market for a TV and I research everything to the nth degree, it may be a while before I actually own one...

Thanks.
