14841  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero question... on: March 14, 2006, 05:57:42 PM

If you play it without headphones you hear the click of the strum bar but with headphones that goes away and gives you more of a guitar like feeling.

Not if you turn it up really loud. Volume is the difference between rocking and ROCKING!

Absolutely.

Cranked up on the surround sound system there's no clicking....

14844  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero question... on: March 13, 2006, 08:56:52 PM
I was wondering the same thing...but from ther perspective of someone who can't play guitar.

I'd bet guitarists would find the game quite easy.

I'm betting the life boats aren't standard issue...
14847  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / General "can't find 360" grumbling on: March 13, 2006, 07:26:14 PM
There's a great system out there called The 'PlayStation 2'.  I know I know. Weird. I just got one and would totally recommend it.
14848  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Songs you heard for the first time in GH that you dig on: March 13, 2006, 07:23:36 PM

However, playing some of them in guitar hero has given me a new appreciation for the giutar work in them.

Ditto.  It's shocking- even with five buttons- to see how complicated these songs are...

I haven't purchased any of the unlockable songs...instead I blew 8 grand on the grim reaper. He's meh.
14849  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Songs you heard for the first time in GH that you dig on: March 13, 2006, 05:54:32 PM
I'm almost done with the Medium difficullty and have been very impressed by the song selection.

I pretty much stopped buying mainstream music after high school and when I became a Christian I pretty much focused my attention in the genre picking up a few secular artists (I love Avril Lavigne  ) here and there.

But prior to that I was a 'headbanger' and still make it a point to jam to something at least once a week. slywink

That said, a lot of the songs in GH are new to me.

I've heard of a lot of the bands, but not the songs.

There's the SUM41 song that is just awesome.

There's that Ace of Spades song that is really good too.

Infected by Bad Religion is another one I'd never heard but really like.

But I wonder, if I had heard the song on the radio (rather than 'playing' it, if I'd like it).

Any gems you've turned up that you really enjoy listening to/playing over and over?

The only real DOG that I've heard is 'Take it off' by the Donnas. Blech.

14851  Gaming / Analog Gaming / I now love Gamespot on: March 13, 2006, 10:52:12 AM
I love their Hotspot podcast and have taken a brief look at their live show On the Spot which looks good too.

Through the Pcasts I've gotten to know some of there personalities, and these folks really know their gaming.

It was fashionable years ago to be anti-gamespot, but I kinda really dig them now...

Chances are most of you have been hitting that site with more consistency than I have, what say you?
14852  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Controller Broken Angry on: March 10, 2006, 06:32:00 PM
For the first time in my life I have raged so hard at a game that in the process of slamming the contoller down, I broke it.

PoP:TTT: Dual boss battle: Guy with the Axe & Guy with the Sword.

I spent close to 3 hours trying to beat this at about the 2 hr mark I threw my controller down so hard that it tore away from the quick rip on the cord.

I plugged it back in and the rumble pack is on full time now.  Into the trash it goes.

I had no life upgrades- in fact I didn't know there were any in the game until I read in a gamefaq guide (searching for tips on how to beat them).

I can imagine that if I had the 4 (FOUR!) life upgrades that I missed throughout the game, I could have taken them in 5 or so tries.  So mad.

I finally beat them and have moved on.

ATBs top 5 Angry Gaming Moments this generation: (I don't think there are any spoilers)

1. POP:TTT Dual Boss
2. BtVS: Hell level (could not get past the jumping puzzle)
3. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I can't remember the specifics, but I kept dying at this one part and I remember being SUPER hot under the collar
4.Jade Empire: Final boss.  Didn't like the game to begin with but had to finish it to justify the $$$.  This frustration combined with his superattack or whatever it was made it just not worth it. Played the whole game with grand master on the fights...changed the final boss to easy.
5. Mercenaries: I took down the Ace of Spades, but clipping issues put him under the nuke pad so I couldn't retrieve him.  I tried the level 2 more times and then used GOD mode to get my rightfully earned (and pathetic) end cinematic.

14855  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone ever order used games at EBGames.com? on: March 09, 2006, 01:37:24 PM
I've had good and bad experiences- all the games I received worked, but a couple had scratches all over the place.

I handle my games with kid-gloves and make sure they never get damaged and was disappointed in the quality.

However, that said, they did work just fine for the most part.

If you want AMAZINGLY scratch free games that have perfect manuals and box contents try buying used from http://www.gamefly.com.  I was absolutely blown away.
14856  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Now I've read it...OXM is retarded... on: March 09, 2006, 01:33:41 PM
I find it a chore to read through OXM in the new format and thus have decided not to renew at the end of the year.

It seems that the mag has gone from a slightly skewed fanboi mag to one that's over the top in praising everything that xbox does.

I predicted that once Rob Smith took over it would go down the drain- far more ads far less content far fewer interesting articles.  True, he's probably made it a dozen times more profitable, but probably half as enjoyable as a reader.

Francesa has inherited a sinking ship as far as I'm concerned, content quality and impact wise.

If only Steve Bauman had taken over- true, spelling and proofing mistakes would be on the increase, but the magazine would turn into a gem of a periodical.

14858  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What'd You Name Your Band? on: March 07, 2006, 08:09:13 PM
My first band in Guitar Hero was Canvas Colors.  The name for a 'band' I was very briefly in in high school back when I played a little keyboards...

Second Band was Limozeen (thanks SB!)

Third Band and current one for Medium difficulty featuring Jonny Napalm is: Burnin Urine.  That was always going to be my band and our first album was going to be Into the Cup.

Sadly I have no talent so GH is my only way to achieve rockstar glory.

I thought the fighting was the best part of JE, but that's not saying much.

It became far too formulaic and there wasn't enough variety...

Hopefully the Jade Empire  'elements' = real time fighting and not the suck butt rock paper scissors mechanic.

Oh and I loved the combat in KOTOR...TB fighting hearken's back to Pool of Radiance (the original) for me.
14861  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Questions: With New Questions! on: March 07, 2006, 02:52:29 PM
1. What is the deciding factor on the star rating for your performance: Is it the score or the note %age? I think it's the latter, but am not sure

2. This question may be redundant: but what do you focus on the most. Score or note %age?

14866  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Questions: With New Questions! on: March 06, 2006, 02:53:37 PM
So out of the gate for my PS2- as my first PS2 game- I purchase Guitar Hero.  One of the most fun games ever.  Really and truly.

Questions though from the rythm impaired:

1.  What is the best way to hold the guitar so that you can hit all five frets?  I've just moved up to medium (4 frets) and am already having a bear getting my pinky to do what it needs to.  What about with 5?  Do you hold it so that your index does the red and the green and your fingers match up 1 to 1 with the others?

2. When's the best time to use star power (assuming you're not in trouble)? On long notes or on lots of single notes?

3.  Does the whammy bar get you more points on non- star power long notes?  Or at all?  I'll stop going to it so often if it doesn't.

4. Have sequel's been announced? Red Octane is sitting on a cash cow with this.  Imagine an alternative, Christian, Punk, acoustic or whatever else version of the game.  Now imagine they put out limited edition guitars.    Or came out with Drum hero.

5. Has this game been selling well enough to merit a sequel?

Thanks.
14867  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / One More PS2 Memory Question on: March 03, 2006, 09:30:39 PM
Is it acceptible to buy non Sony memory?

They have 8 mb at BB for 24.99 and a 16 mb MAX at bb for the same price.

Blue shirt said non-sony memory may not save all games.

Advice?

Oh and Guitar Hero is waiting to be played!

14870  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Quick PS2 Sound Question on: March 02, 2006, 03:42:09 PM
Does the PS2 do surround sound like the xbox (it hasn't arrived yet).

Separately, but equally important, is there such thing as an optical cable splitter?  What I want to be able to do is plug multiple optical cables into one splitter and then the splitter into the tuner.

Do they make such a thing?

Not me. I got an xbox on Christmas Day 2002 and haven't PC Gamed much at all since then.

The only game I've purchased since then is Disciples 2 gold with all the expansions (I had already beaten the original years ago).

I just recently loaded up Age of Wonders II and I still have Warcraft III staring at me...but I'm just not interested enough to relearn AOW or reload WCIII.

That said, I did just buy a PS2 smile.

14874  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who are your favorite *fictional* characters? on: March 01, 2006, 03:47:11 PM
I dont' know what it is, but I really like Jason Bourne as he's presented in the movies (haven't read the book).

Maximus from Gladiator is also a favorite character of mine. Savage when necessary.  Compassionate and reasonable when necessary.

Dr. Zoidberg and Frye from Futurama.

But probably my all time favorite (without giving it much thought) would be Henry 'Indiana' Jones.

Got it new off ebay for 141 bones shipped (which if you account for tax saved me 20 dollars).

It will be here in a few days and though I pulled the trigger on it before I wanted to- I wanted to play through my xbox backlog first- I'm pretty pumped.

The raves that Shadow Heart's Covenant has gotten makes me want to get it, but as I'm a bit of a completist, I'd like to play the first one first.

It rates lower than the Covenatn on Gamespot, but the user reviews are high.

Should I play the first one first?  Anyone know where to get it cheap?

Oh...and don't think I'm not salivating for Guitar Hero.

Finally, I have the DragonQuest VIII demo (cause for whatever reason I signed up for it) and am looking forward to that too.  Similar question: I haven't played this series since Dragon Warrior III on the NES.  Can I pick up VIII and enjoy it or will I be totally lost?

Thanks...and for the first time since Genesis/NES ...I own TWO consoles.

It wasn't a bug. It was a way to indicate pensive thought.
