14841  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Countdown to DS Lite: DEAD PIXEL? AUGH! PG 3 on: June 04, 2006, 09:11:44 PM
Actually less, but I'm not going to be tracking hours.  And some of you lucky schlubs already have it...but for the rest of us:

Whose jumping into the handheld market for the first time?

Whose upgrading from a DS/PSP to a DS Lite?

For those of you in the first category, what purchases have you made in preparation for your new toy?

I'll start!  biggrin

As mentioned somewhere, this will be my first handheld gaming system in 25 years.  I'm thrilled beyond all get out and it was pretty much New Super Mario Brothers that pushed me over the edge- that and needing an easy way to get a gaming fix when the TV is occupied of when I'm on a trip.

I have spent mucho dinero already on the DS:

The system  (116.00 at Overstock), a 10.00 case, 4 games (Meteos, Mario Kart, Advance Wars and Phoenix Wright (re-issue preorder <4 of em>).  Other things I might want to buy are screen protectors as it seems lots of people recommend them, Castlevania, New Super Mario Brothers (natch) and some of the other quirky games like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy and Kirby: Cursed Canvas).  All of it mostly financed by the selling of old games.

I'm most excited about the features of the DS including wifi- I'll need players to house me on MK in the coming days- as well as being back in touch with my Nintendo side for the first time since the NES.

I'm super excited and it's neat to be able to buy my second console in a year (PS2 in March) and feel like a gaming N00b with all of the requisite excitement that comes with it.  Now I've got to not go overboard and somehow save up some cash for the Wii.

Anyhew-  Can't wait!

Well for me it has been 18 months since I finished it....the details are shady at this point...
14843  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Replaying KotOR II (paging Starshifter & ATB) on: June 03, 2006, 11:46:59 PM
I played through 3/4 of the game as a good character, started over and made an uber bad to the bone sith lord.  The Dark Side is much easier to play imo because the force powers are much more powerful.

Force Lightning is a must.  It kicks butt.

Max out on the lightsaber abilities too (throw for example) to balance out your lack of physical strength (as you'll be putting most of your points into wisdom).

There's another power that paralyzes people. It's  a must too as it gives you a total advantage.

Kill everything and everyone you can cause the further you get along on the dark side the better your casting ability (less force pts).

As for armor, i have no idea.  Once you get along on the dark side path, you're pretty much untouchable....at least my guy was.

Starshifter will be glad to know that I've recently sold both my KOTOR games as, well, there's no going back :p

14849  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PStwo on: May 31, 2006, 04:34:38 PM
I've had one for about 3 months and have had no troubles.

It has played every game- new, used, PS1 and PS2, with the regular or GH Guitar controller- flawlessly.

I've now got it jacked into my receiver the the limited use of DD sound is nice.

I haven't used it for online play so I cannot comment on that.

As for overheating, I don't notice that it get's all that hot.  I'll have to check...

if you do go back to MGS 1 first...make sure its the gamecube version..the twin snakes....as the ps1 version has aged terribly

Gonna disagree.  The game is great.  If by age  you mean the graphics, they're easy to get passed...unless graphics are your sole reason for playing a game.

The hardest part of MGS is that the controls were rather primitive and the views available weren't the best with regard to the camera....

It still rates an A+ AFAIC

I checked two targets and a walmart.

Both targets had them in stock but wouldn't break the street date.

At walmart I actually met a Nintendo employee changing out the display and she said that this walmart hadn't even received them.

She did let me handle her DS Lite though. It's pretty awesome.

From Cheapassgamer.

Even though I have mine preordered, I will be checking the local target to see if they're out...

Good luck if you launch off on a quest to find one.

Those suck.

Didn't they just do a G1 re-release not too long ago? I remember seeing the original decepticon jets at TRU for like 30.00 a piece.

Bah. Splinter Cell wishes it was MGS.

I played the first one just this year. Story was amazing and I LOVE cutscenes.

Just started up MGS 2 and the jump from 1 to 2 in terms of gameplay, graphics and innovation is pretty alarming- with regard to the better camera, new weapon types, story weaving, different views etc.

I'm about 2 hrs into it and loving it.

Solid Snake would kick Sam Fisher's butt.

So there!

But like I said, I love me a good cutscene. I can see why those who don't wouldn't like the game.

Yeah, I'm aware of the bug, and I'm terrified of it. Got any details about it, without spoiling things? Any way to know if you've sneaked past it or not? For what it's worth, I just grabbed the sword that works as a lever key

IIRC, it's triggered by drinking water and/or saving before you go through a portal.  Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to tell until just the very end of the game.

Greeeeeeat. That's what I've been doing before every one of those time portals. Is it a sure thing, or are the odds that you won't hit the bug pretty good?

I pretty much did that as well and never hit the bug...was the bug ps2 or xbox? i played on xbox.

14860  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half-Life 2 on XBOX (worth 10.00)? on: May 30, 2006, 04:45:14 PM
Circuit City has this one on sale this week and I picked it up. 9.99.

I really loevd the first one and, rightfully, played it on PC. I've been a console gamer exclusively since 2002 and haven't updated my gaming rig since nov 2001, hence i never played HL2 on the pc.

Does the game work well on the brick or is it a toothless port?  Most of the reviews are solid, but Gamespot says that the frame rate is B-A-D bad.

Thoughts?

...sadly there was no review on GT...

I loved the series.

SoT is an all time great. No question

Warrior Within, because again I guess I'm not a super stickler about everything, was a fun a game and I still rate it as an A.

Two Thrones with the dark prince dynamic was a great capstone to the series and I enjoyed it quite a bit....though it did have my first controller breaking moment in history and I was a bit let down by the ending.

Anyhew, i thin it's well worth your time to play through both.  Skipping the middle one would be a mistake, IMO.

Wow! I figured it was fubared since you turned it on BEFORE you tried rinsing with de-ionized water (and it sounds like you never even did that, right?). Amazing. And Ralph-Wiggum, Nintendo doesn't need to make their gadgets fragile to get people to replace them, we buy new things when they just release different colors.

If that aint the truth I don't know what is.

So far it has been a pretty good gaming weekend timewise.

I've put in a couple hours with Shadow Hearts: Covenant which still isn't grabbing me.

I started up Indigo Prophecy and man, it has been a long time since a game has set the mood so well.  Pretty cool so far, though I hear it gets weird.

I've also just begun Metal Gear Solid 2 and by begun I mean watched the opening cinematic. smile

Great!

Call me a yutz, but I like these comaradarie threads.  So--- what will you be playing this weekend?

I'm on an 8 day hiatus- as nothing is urging me to play it and I still have to shake off the letdown that was Colossus, but I may fire up Indigo Prophecy this weekend.

Or I may revisit Chrono Trigger as I think I'm just about to finish it.

Or I may play some Shadow Hearts: Covenant. I'm about 10 hrs in but it hasn't grabbed me like the first. Folks have said it gets better...

14869  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS Lite Launch Question on: May 25, 2006, 08:47:20 PM
Ok, so will this go down like all the other console releases?  Stores opening early or long lines forming prior to release?

If so, what's the best bet?  Should I actually (heaven forbid) camp out or should I just wait it out until the the supplies recoup.

The reason I ask is that there's speculation that the preorder deal on Overstock might be cancelled.

Just wonderin...

Thanks for the tip, without any games though? I remember selling my original DS (yes, this is my second and the Lite will be my third) on E-bay and had to include something like four games to even squeak out $150 for it.

Some folks on CAG were talking about how theirs sold for 100.00 just by itself. Take it for what's worth...give it ago.  The console plus 5 games for 100? Zounds.

If you're interested in selling some games, send me a PM.

I'm seriously considering cashing in my DS for a new DS Lite when they come out, anyone hear of any deals? You know, something like, trade-in your old DS and five games and get $100 towards a new DS Lite...

Also, are the game stores only offering ridiculous bundles for this system?

Dude. You can still sell your regular DS on ebay for 100.00.  Try that route...
14872  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS Game Box Questions on: May 25, 2006, 06:51:25 PM
So the games I ordered with my DS preorder came today and I have questions

I understand that DS has wifi capability:

1. On Mario Kart DS there's a sticker that says: 'Nintendo WiFi Connection'

2. On the back of that same game are two pictures with the following captions: 'Wireless DS Single-Card Download Play' and 'Wireless DS Multi-Card Play'

What do those mean?

3. On Advance Wars it has the same icons as #2 but now 'Nintendo WiFi Connection' on it.  Huh?
14873  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PS3] Sony points the gun at its own head yet again? on: May 24, 2006, 10:26:16 PM
I wonder how much the of EB/Gamestop's bottom line comes from pre played sales. I bet it's a large chunk.  I wonder what the impacts of this will be from that perspective.

If this goes into effect, this is a huge downer and if I should some day own a PS3 I will have to be helluva careful about any game I buy if I'm gonna own it forever.

However, Sony hasn't been shy about their over the top IP protection schemes.  Let's see if this backfires.  I bet jonny consumer won't care, however, now you have alienated both ends of the gaming spectrum:

Casual gamers with the price
Hobbyists with this copy protection.

I wonder who their audience is....?

Or at least the blue one.

Sigh... white.  Maybe it will hide fingerprints better?

I was planning on waiting for  a color, but then I read on (CNET i think) that the black/blue ones really show scratches.  I didn't bother to search around for more corroboration, and went for it.

Besides, white things are easier to see so when it's in the bottom of my bag or whatever I can spot it no sweat.
14877  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Keeping Games Forever? on: May 22, 2006, 05:38:36 PM
A serious question, to you, my brothers:  Is there a point to keeping games forever?

I was tooling around on ebay and saw a collection of PS2 games for sale and it's fetching 200.00, which is no small chunk of change.

I have a lot of great XBOX games that I could bundle together and attempt to sell- though I know I would take an overall loss (but that's still more than I'd get with them sitting on my shelf)- chances are I'll never play them again and the extra dough would help offset future costs (Wii, DS, games, etc).

It's a very rare game that I rate as a permanent addition to my collection (though the ratio of xbox games is rather high) and I'm wondering if any game should rate that.

Games that I hold back are what I consider the best of the generation (Prince of Persia Trilogy, Halos, KOTOR, Ninja Gaiden, etc) and ones that I'd like to go back to eventually.  Thing is, I almost never do (Ninja Gaiden WILL be the exception).  So should I hang on to them as a part of nostalgia or possibly the chance to cash in on them many years from now on Antiques Roadshow or unload them now to fund future purchases.

I'm not a 'collector' per se nor am I particularly sentimental about gaming.  I have great memories and there are some games I still wish I would have kept (Mike Tyson's Punchout, LucasArts adventures etc), but I don't know that I would ever really play them again.

Thoughts?

14880  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Most anticipated games? on: May 22, 2006, 03:27:42 PM
Hmm. It seems to me that I'm more excited for the hardware than any game in particular.

Tops of the list is the Wii- but I've heard some good and bad about hands on experiences (which is fine since it's still pretty early).

As for specific games, Spore looks interesting, but Will Wright games have always bored me to tears so I probably won't get it.

Thus my answer is: NONE.
