14841  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HDTV for gaming.. on: July 20, 2006, 12:58:54 PM
I paid 850 for mine in January. They're now under 800 and I've seen them on sale for about 750.
14842  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Has Portable Gaming Changed Your Gaming Habits? on: July 20, 2006, 12:37:13 PM
As the dozens of you who have joined the ATB fanclub know from my recent newsletter, I'm still in love with the DS lite, having grabbed it on launch day.  It, has in fact, become one of those watershed purchases in my gaming history- the first since my acquisition of the XBOX in 2002 completely steered me away from more than a decade of PC only gaming.

Habits that have changed since the acquisition of my DS Lite:

1. I've significantly cut back on my console playing as the 'hassle' of powering up the tv, the console and the surround sound system is now too much effort whereas the DS gives me near instant gratification

2. I am currently engaged in Octo-simultaneous play whereas previously on the consoles and even back on the PC, I almost always played one game from start to finish before firing up another.  Currently on the DS I'm playing (in order of most time to least): Advanced Wars: DS, Brain Age, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright, New Super Mario Bros, Brain Age and  Trauma Center.  Zounds!

3. I play in places where I never thought I would play (public): I've broken the DS out at Doctor's offices, oil change companies, and other venues.  Gaming for me is coming out of the closet, as it were

4. I play in places where I NEVER thought I would play (private): <cough> in the bathroom.  I even, uh, bring it with me when I go to my work's HQ, drop the sound all the way down and play when I'm in the men's restroom at work.  Yah baby!

5. As a direct result of #4 the amount of time I spend reading has dropped significantly.  I'm hard pressed to read my two favorite magazines at all now: Wired and The Economist.  Also, my brief flirtation with the novel, rekindled by the masterpiece The Three Muskateers has been put on hiatus.

6. I no longer dread trips out of town.  I've done a bit of travel lately and the DS has come with me to every location.  It's a great go to when there's nothing to do or I need a quick fix before bed when in a strange land

7. Interrupted sleep patterns.  Specifically due to 6, when I'm on the road my schedule is already off and this is exacerbated by my staying up 30 mins to an hr longer than I intended to deal some damage to Black Hole.

8. I've started wearing gamer T-shirts.  Yes, my wife bought me the 'I have control issues' shirt with a an N64 controller on it, but since getting the DS and falling more and more in love with Nintendo, I've purchased several others...and wear them in public.

9. I have introduced gaming to my oldest child: 3.5.  While I don't want my kids to be as hooked on gaming as I am, I have let the oldest play whack a mole on NSMB as well as play a bit of Mario Kart.  Previously, as almost all my games for the console are M or T rated, I only played after they went to bed.  Still, I don't let it interfere with 'daddy' time, but it is becoming more mainstream

10.  I finally got teh wife to play something...briefly.  I thought she would enjoy brain age, but she didn't care for it telling her 'how stupid she is' when, upon her first try, her brain age was 81.  Despite my explanations that it would get easier as she acquired the familiarity with the device, the door has not only once again been slammed, but deadbolted.  My mother in law loved BA.  She lives 6 hrs away though.

Other consoles will gain ground on Sony, but the next generation will still belong to them.

I'll take that bet.
14844  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How much is your rent? on: July 19, 2006, 04:43:26 PM
Was paying 1330+ for a 1300 sq ft rambler with a basement  in Leesburg VA and had to refinance 3 times to keep it that low.

Moved to NC and now have a 3000sqft house for 1030 per month...of course with the proceeds from house A were able to buy down the mortgage a bit on house B.

$1100 for a studio  God bless suburban DC. At least all utilities and cable are included.

You're actually doing quite well ESPECIALLY if all the utils AND (?!) cable are included.  Zounds!
14845  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HDTV for gaming.. on: July 19, 2006, 02:16:58 AM
When we moved to NC, the room we wanted to place the tv in in the new house couldn't fit our GIGANTIC CRT Magnavox 32 inch so we left it behind.

We bought the 30 inch Samsung slimfit widescreen with built in HD tuner....couldn't be happier.  Although I won't pay for digital cable/satellite, I don't have to because our omni-directional antenna picks up HD signals fine and it was only 70.00 at radio shack.

I don't have any gaming rigs that play in Hi def, but might in the future...though the Wii is my first pick of next gen console.  Graphics just aren't that big of a seller for me.

Let me just say this: Advanced Wars on the DS is brilliant.

That is what I shall be playing.

Maybe a bit of DQ VIII....but maybe not.

Just watched the first Ortiz/Shamrock fight on youtube. Shamrock got killed.  Probably would have been the same result had this fight progressed.

Who were the combatants in that grueling fight KD was talking about? I wanna see if it's up.

Vids on youtube. Yeah, I know nothing about UFC, but it looked premature. Shamrock wasn't limp or anything he just hadn't gotten his arm back can tell by how quickly he got up that he wasn't out of it... Oh well.

I'd equate it to the old WWF days where two huge stars were gonna fight only to have someone run out frmo the dressring room to result in a DQ.. frown
14851  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you playing this weekend? 07/07/06 on: July 07, 2006, 05:05:34 PM
DQVIII on the PS2...pretty good but something about it bothers me. Overall good so far.

DS: Who knows?  Probably a bit of: Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright, Kirby: Canvas Curse, NSMB, Brain Age and i might even fire up Advanced Wars.
14852  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's that Time Again: GOTY So far? on: July 07, 2006, 12:45:28 PM
The year's MORE than half over. What's your GOTY so far?

Two categories:

GOTY for games released in 2006

GOTY for games played in 2006 regardless of year

GOTY 2006

I haven't played that many releases from 2006-

PS2: None played

DS: New Super Mario Bros: A nostalgic hoot.

XBOX: None Played

GOTY Played in 2006

PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Hands down one of the best devised stories I've ever played in a game. Brilliant from start to finish.

DS: Kirby: Canvas Curse. Though I haven't finished it yet, it's just an amazingly well executed implementation of the DS's touchscreen capabilities.

XBOX: Panzer Dragoon Orta- The oldest game in my collection not to be played was marvelous on an epic scale.

GOTY: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of liberty

Overall GOTY: [/b]

Wait and see.

And Bush doesn't need to pardon Osama.  There is nothing to forgive, he performed as expected.

Is anyone actually surprised that a family heading a war profiteer firm entered office preaching "war without end"?  Anyone supporting the Bushs and their cronies doesn't know (or want to know) much about them.

Anyone who opposed them politically "just hates Bush".
Anyone who breaks ranks and reveals the corruption "is just disgruntled and has an axe to grind".

You know things are bad when ex-Nixon people are saying GWB's administration is worse than Nixon.

Anyway, I'm going to stop, since this is just ranting.  If anyone wants some suggestions for info sources, you can start with "House of Bush, House of Saud", check out the Walsh report on Iran-Contra, then work your way out from there.

Phoenix Wright arrived on Friday and I have been having a blast with that.  I'm on what I guess is the final third of case 2.  Brilliant!

I've also started up DQ VIII on the PS2. So far so good.

Finally, I'm doing my brain training.  My brain age is my actual age so that show marked progress.  Don't know if I'm smart enough to get down to 20 though...

Meh. I always liked the bad guys, even if they were totally hopeless.

Cobra, The Decepticons, Shredder & Krang, and the list goes on.

They always had the cooler character designs and the better stuff.

So true. I always pulled for Cobra even though it was hopeless.  But for whatever reason- I think it's mostly due to Optimus Prime- I always rooted for the Autobots.

I loved the Dragons of Series. Its by far one of my favorite series of books. The development of the Chracters, I thought, was great. raistlin from that low level mage with no real purpose or power, and onward.

The rebirth of cleric within the world. The classic battle between good and evil. The connection that the characters make. Flint, Tanis, tass. the love story or lust story of Kit, and Tanis.

I think there is a lot here, that prolly gets over looked. tanis fight with his own people not liking him being a halfbreed, and the humans not liking him for being a half breed. So where does he fit?

You, sir, are making me pine for them again...stoppit!

I remember the movie ads. They counted down from like 5 days out.

Then after the movie came out the ad had this gem: 'So intense you have to see it twice to take it all in.'

My parents let me stay home from school to see it when it opened.

Well naturally in retrospect it's derivative of Tolkein. But so is D&D.  So is harry potter. So is just about anything set in that type of fantasy.

But to 13 year old kid who'd never heard of Tolkein it was gold. Pure gold.

As I said, I wouldn't pick it up again today (while I would love to invest the time in re-reading LOTR series) but I still have those books and probably always will.

I still read through them every couple years.  Sure, they're juvenille, but it's still a damn good story.

I was a lot more optimistic about this until I checked out the animation company's website..   Their style is much more Rugrats than Larry Elmore.  frown  I guess it could still be good, but I won't hold my breath.

If they did it in the old D&D cartoon animation style that would be hot....and of course they'd need to somehow work in a cameo of Venger!

First: I believe WheelJack created them.

Second: I always thought the dinobots were overrated, but still considered them helluva good.

Third: Grimlock had teh best line ever. To Megatron, quoth he: You stupid and you ugly too!

Fourth: That test is nice, but someone said there'd be an obligatory shot of a person being surprised by a car transforming and I'll be there it is!

Can't remember that Autobots name though.  Didn't care for him. He was too pretty.

<wakes up>

I got into the dragonlance books in 7th grade. Scott Harned was reading the first book and I read the back.  He moved onto the second and I began the first.  I read the first book in 7 days- i think it was 500 pages and then left Scott in the dust.  I blazed through a bunch more and IIRC, my favorite was the Legend of Huma.

Tried to pick them up again a few years ago, but the writing came off as so juvenile and uninspired. Still- I have the fondest memories of reading those series.

I've just completed the 2nd world and through the course of the adventure so far, there have been two medals behind 'switchblocks'.

However, I've scoured the levels for them and they are nowhere to be found.

For example in the first world, there is a switchblock prominently on a relatively open level. yet I CANNOT find a switch anywhere.

Are they hidden? do i have to touch a special place on the screen to make them appear?

The scene where he is tearing the suit off next to the giant bell should be right before the suit leaves him and becomes the Venom/Eddie character.  I would guess that scene is somewhere from the late middle to the end of the movie.  I think Venom will be Spidey #4, we will just get a small glimpse of him to fuel the next movie.

I don't think McGuire or Dunst have signed on for 4....I thought I read somewhere that they were pretty much done with it after 3.  I also thought Raimi said he would rather move on to other projects...

I hope there's a 4....

Now, speaking as someone who didn't particularly care for Spider-Man 2 (and yes, I know this makes me a marked man but that scene on the runaway subway train when his face is exposed and everyone's all, "We won't tell anyone Spider-Man" made me want to scream)

I actually thought that scene was very touching.

As did I.  One of my favorite touches in the film.

One of the best scenes in the series thus far.

The new trailer is awesome, but I too will voice concern about the batmanesque too many villains for one film.

Howver, Raimi has done an amazing job and 2 was significantly better than 1...hopefully he'll do it again.

This will be the first movie I see in the theater in a LONG time.
