14841  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / DVDs to cost $1.50! on: April 24, 2006, 09:18:33 AM
Meh. I don't mind paying between 10-15.00 for a movie or between 25 and 35.00 for a television season.

if you hunt the sales it's not hard to find movies cheap.

i don't buy many at all anymore as most movies these days never seem to be 'perfect' from start to finish.

I focus on seasons: Futurama, Batman:TAS, and of course the Simpsons (season 8 being the last DVD purchase of any kind).

I'd rather rage about jacked up music prices, but I buy nearly all of my CDs from and at 5.99 a pop, I'm content...though if I want a new release I'll pay up to 12.00.  Still not atrociious, but well overpriced.
14842  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 and 16:9 on: April 24, 2006, 09:11:04 AM
I got DWVIII a few weks back and was finally testing it out. i set it to 16:9 on my widescreen and it did end up taking the whole screen.  Again no help, but that's my experience.
14843  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your number one gaming system right now? on: April 23, 2006, 09:28:57 PM
Which gaming system most monopolizes your precious gaming time...and why/what are you playing?

Anyone who reads any threads I start knows my answer.

I've been playing Devil May Cry, Chrono Trigger, Guitar Hero.

However, Indigo Prophecy on the XBOX is calling out to me.
14844  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Wow, I hated gamespot and EB before but now I really do... on: April 22, 2006, 10:24:54 PM
Due to the LaPorte effect, I never bought used nor traded for games.

Then I started- now if I can find used games in perfect condition, I'll buy them.  It's how I've filled out my PS2 collection.

Of the dozen or so games I have, I only bought a couple, including  Guitar Hero, new.
14845  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Wow, I hated gamespot and EB before but now I really do... on: April 22, 2006, 07:03:30 PM
I like shopping at the local EB despite the hard sell.  Olga (i believe she's latin) is a master seller.  I've seen her get people to buy the 1.00 disc guarantee and pre-order a game that they weren't ready to preorder.

I came up to the counter and she said the first two words of her pitch and I said no thanks.

She's just doing her job.

Everyone always says they're giving up on EB....
14846  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What will you be playing this weekend? on: April 21, 2006, 08:13:08 PM
Continue in Devil May Cry (PS2)

May finally finish Prince of Persia 2 (XBOX)

Perhaps a bit of Guitar Hero (PS2)

May begin Indigo Prophecy (XBOX)

May play a bit more Chrono Trigger (PSX via PS2)

I have the sneaking suspition though that I won't get much time to play this weekend.
14847  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Found this to be funny on: April 20, 2006, 08:48:05 PM

14848  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Devil May Cry Series on: April 20, 2006, 03:04:09 PM
Okay okay- I should stop gushing about my PS2 experience, but I won't. So there.

I'm playing some DMC to take a breake from the sublime Chrono Trigger, and I'm having a hoot- I'm not very far in (misison 4) but it's a fabulous game. You already know that.  So here's my question.

As I love to play game series all the way through (hence I started with Shadow Hearts in order to play what is supposed to be the even greater SH:C- SH btw is brilliant), I'm wondering if the generally awful reviews of DMC 2 should prevent me from playing it.

No spoilers please, but despite the fact that DMC2 is considered pale in comparison to I and III, should I play it to get the most Dante/DMC story?

Or is it safe to skip it and go to III?

Ditto! Though I won't be buying a 360 to play it.

Starshifter- would you (or do you have one already?)

I'd also like to know if there's any presence at all for current gen consoles.

It seems that XBOX releases have dropped off the map.  Is the same going to be true for PS2?

I find your advice contradictory.
14851  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grim Outlook for Square-Enix - Lower earning estimate on: April 19, 2006, 12:18:00 PM
I ask these question as someone who has a tentative grasp on financials/economic reports:

1. Is Square Enix cash rich? I mean they've been making blockbusters for decades now.  I'd think they have a pretty fat wad and could stave off a few bad quarters/years.

2. How does a bad year make for a grim outlook?  Has this been a problem for consecutive years or is this a blip?

3. I don't know for certain, but I would expect that SE is planning a huge game in support of PS3 launch. Is this true? If so, I'd presume they'd do ok as a result of that console's debut
14852  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero: Difficulty Hard = No more Fun on: April 18, 2006, 10:38:38 PM

The jump from easy to medium was fine.

But medium to hard is too much.

I can get five stars after MANY MANY MANY attempts on four of the first five songs, but man Infected is giving me coniptions- I can finish it, but it's not good enough.

Then I tried More than a Feeling...COME ON!

I find trying to hit hammer on's and pull offs VERY difficult and the fact that there is no way to practice them other than in the short advance tutorial quite frustrating.

Any tips out there?  I know someone finished bark at the moon on expert- I got 3 stars on medium and gave up.

Help! I want to be good but can't seem to get it. Tips Tips tips?

I'm about 20 hrs in and once again I've made the mistake of reading an FAQ during a portion where I got I'm certain I've missed a bunch of stuff and that frustrates me.  So I'm just taking a break.  An amicable separation.

It's still an A+ to me.

Edit: Oh and it's been 13 pretty much straight days of playing nothing else except guitar hero with my niece and nephew...

It's getting a little long for me so I'm taking a break and will be playing some Devil May Cry for a bit.

I think three seasons was it...rather, there are three collections and I thought that was the sum of it.

The wikipedia entry confuses me so I'm not sure if what I said is accurate.
14858  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Batman: The Animated Series on: April 15, 2006, 02:33:41 AM
It's just awesome.

I bought all three collections some time in early '05 and thus far have still only completed the first season.

First season was hit or miss with its episodes- mostly hit and some of the stories are movie quality.

I've begun season two and just finished the first part of Robin's something or other and I have to say that this season already surpasses season 1- very taught, very deep, very well done.

Just great stuff.

I remember catching them in original release when i was in high school and I'm glad I ponied up the dough to buy them.

Any other fans out there?

I'd like to do Lasik, but I have an astygmatism in both eyes, which makes it even more expensive.  The last time I checked, it was costing me $500 for each eye + another $250 for the astygmatism.  That made it a cool $1500 for both.

I had severe astigmatism in each eye.  For the #1 guy in Northern Virginia it cost me $2850 per eye.  They had a 600.00 promotion so final cost was $5100.00 total (for initial lazoring, and follow ups).  If you pay for it through flex spending it works to be about 30% less.

Totally worth it.

I'd do it again (and will for the final touch ups some time in the next few months).

I went from >2400 to 20/25 and am SO grateful.

My opinion means nothing re: MGS3 as I've only played MGS, but I love cutscenes.  I love a good story.

I never got the people who skip cutscenes as I find them to be a 'reward' for playing the game.

As for this:

Otacon: Snake, I need you to destroy Metal Gear.
Snake: Metal Gear?
Otacon: Yes, the secret super weapon!
Snake: Secret super weapon?
Otacon: Yes, Metal Gear!
Snake: Metal Gear?
Otacon: I need you to infiltrate the base and find Metal Gear!
Snake: Infiltrate the base and find Metal Gear?
Otacon: Take some pictures of Metal Gear!
Snake: Metal Gear?
Otacon: Yes, the secret super weapon!
Snake: Secret super weapon...?
Otacon: Correct, Metal Gear!
Snake: Metal Gear?
Otacon: Yes!
Snake: Es?

That's just funny.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but isn't that game supposed to suck?  According to Gamerankings, it's a 63...but to GT it's in the mid 80s... (OMG review inflation!? slywink).

Please Note: Tongue in cheek.
14864  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / OXM and their "10" on: April 12, 2006, 04:26:40 PM
Good post: As for Consumer Reports: I believe they buy all of the products they test.  Wiki agrees:

Consumer Reports is known for publishing reviews and comparisons of consumer products and services based on reporting and results from its in-house testing laboratory. Consumer Reports does not accept advertising nor permit the commercial use of its reviews for selling products. Further, all tested products are purchased at retail by Consumer Reports staff. No free samples are accepted from manufacturers. Consumer Reports' tests and ratings of appliances, foods, automobiles and other products/services are highly respected.

I personally have never suspected GT of any shenaninagans, but it's clear that OXM is overtly biased and positive spinny.

I know a lot people have an axe to grind with Gamespot, but of the major sources, I find them to be the most spot on.

14866  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / OXM and their "10" on: April 12, 2006, 03:21:27 PM
. This is YOUR opinion on the game. Its not universal fact come to by some sort of scientific reasoning.

This line of thinking is very bad.  You can use the subjectivity argument for everything and that dismisses the point of discourse at all.

It's clear that OXM ignored the fact that there are big issues with the game when they gave it a 10.  I've read shockingly bad commentary about how woeful the game is with regard to AI.

The 10 was definitely a ploy to get people to buy the mag. OMG a 10! What got a 10!

The fact that most review sites are in the B range should give us pause.

Sure an individual gamer can rank a game higher than the pack or lower, but a magazine that is supposed to know games in and out should at least be in the ball park.

Just an FYI: Got this response from my cancellation inquiry:

Your refund check is being processed and will arrive in the near future. This is a full refund for the unused portion of your subscription.

So I'd advise anyone who isn't happy and still has a sub (unless it was a gift) to cancel and get your phat stack back, jack.

14873  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Canceled OXM on: April 11, 2006, 02:25:13 AM
They should credit the balance of what teh value of your remaining issues is back to you.  That's how other cancelled mags have done it.

I've still got 7 more months on mine and I expect some $$$ back.
14874  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Canceled OXM on: April 10, 2006, 11:19:06 PM
Three primary factors:

1. PS2 now dominates my life
2. I've had enough of their increasingly unbalanced slants (putting a positive spin on the shortage?!)
3. MS is not really supporting XBOX1 much anymore and I have no plans to buy 360

I believe 2006 was to be my 3rd year with the mag.  Started out great: Then Rob Smith came on board and it became more PC Gamer.

Then he left and I was happy, because I appreciate FR's writing.'s just all a little too much schmooze now.

The PSX port is passable, but the MIDI tunes don't play quite right and the load times (mini-delays) drive me nuts.

yeah the 'mini loads' are my only real complaint, but they do nothing to tarnish the I wouldn't hold that has a reason to skip it...especially if you don't own a SNIN.slywink

The midi music works fine, than you very much! biggrin
