14681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FFVII: Ok. When's it get good? on: April 02, 2006, 01:40:48 PM
Well the other game I played from 1998 (MGS) still holds up amazingly well.

Since I must complete nearly every game I play (and I actually paid quite a premium for this one due to it's glowing reviews and word of mouth), I'm not giving up on this one yet.  But to be so uninterested at this early of a stage is not good.

The whole world has told me to play this game.  When's it get good?

I've blown the second reactor and am firmly in the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz with this one.

It's 3 discs...does it get better? Does the story kick in soon? Right now it's so meh, I can't see what the fuss is.

but I'm skeptical on how well developers will be able to implement its unique control scheme.

Developers are the first to complain that innovation can't happen because everyone wants to play the same thing over and over.

Hopefully the revolution will open their eyes and they'll say 'hey, someone is trying. I'm going to give it my all to support them'.

That's rose colored glasses possibly,  but that's what I'd like to see happen.

14686  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I now officially don't understand Fanboisim on: March 30, 2006, 01:24:29 PM
Ok.  I loved the XBOX for the nearly 4 years that I had it exclusively as my console.  I don't know that I ever bashed PS2 or GC during that time.  I would say simple stuff that the graphic capabilities of the XB are better and having the hard drive is really convenient...but I don't know that I ever slammed another system.

As I've said a gozillion times in the past month, I got  PS2 at the beginning of March and I love it.  True, I'm cherry picking the best titles released in the past 5 years (and beyond) so it does have a bit of an advantage in that I'm almost guaranteed not to get a dud, but having the PS2 has not caused me to dislike the xbox.

Additionally, having a PS2 and XB has not caused me to hate Nintendo.

So what's the deal?

Is most fanboisim a result of having one console and not having the other?

Or is it like having a favorite sports team?  You root like crazy for your team and hate like hell any rivals?
14687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution Specs on IGN - Less Powerful than the Xbox 1 on: March 30, 2006, 01:11:00 PM
As I've stated before, the Revo is the only next gen console I'm even considering picking up and the only thing I really know about it is that it's made by nintendo.

The Revolution is going to be successful.  Nintendo knows what it's doing.

You can check by leaving your PSX lid open and then powering up, it will take you to the Memory Manager and you can see how many slots you have open.

i did that but it only appears to list it in KB not slots...unless there's a setting that I can't find...

You had a MGS save on there?

Uh, that would explain the -1 block, wouldn't it?

That was before the MGS saves.

So to the original question: 15 files = 15 blocks?

I know it was tongue n cheek, but please no drama.

It has ruined OO.

KD has done an amazing job of immediately weeding out trouble posters (except that KOTOR giving away Starshifter frown slywink).

I'd rather it be quiet than SHAQ-FU'd with unnecessary crying, counter crying, accusations that one type of crying is okay while the other isn't, follow-ups that indeed the new type of crying comparing crying is not acceptible and then finally a crier not related at all to the problem being banned.

No thanks.

Also, while I would never try to talk anyone out of playing FF VII (my all-time favorite game), I would start on Shadow Hearts:  Covenant while the story and characters from the first game are fresh in your mind.  I played them back to back, and I think SH:  C would have lost much of the emotional impact if I had forgotten some of the first game's details.

This advice has been followed. I fired up SH:C tonight and FFVII is on deck.

14698  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: The Best Game from 1998 on: March 27, 2006, 06:32:42 PM
In 1998, I was a PC gamer.  It was probably my 8th year of PC gaming exclusivity  yet there would still be 4 more before I bought my Xbox.

In 1998, among other titles, I played Fallout- still one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had...but...had I only known what I had been missing I surely would have jumped to the consoles much much sooner.

While everyone is looking forward: XBOX360, PS3, DS Lite, Revolution, I am excited to be looking backwards.

My first game for the PS2, which I got just this month, was from 2001: Shadow Hearts. It's a masterpiece and rates an A+ from me.  Where to go from there?  Further backward, to 1998 and the sublime gaming experience and masterfully crafted story of Metal Gear Solid.

I just finished it over lunch and all I can say is Bravo.

The game holds up exquisitely and the story is on a par with any game I played prior 98 or have played since.  My only gripes are the imprecise controls and the lack of field of view (but after all, it is from 98 which legitimately is a different gaming era).

If you have never played MGS, do so now.  I got mine with a memory card used at EB for 9.00.

I never understood the need for backwards compatibilty, but now I do. If PS2 wasn't bwc, I could never have experienced it....nor could I experience my next adventure: FFVII.

I also find that I'll start and restart a game if it doesn't grab me right away.  An example of this is KUF: Crusaders.  I'm very interested in the game but just can't get the hang of it...so it's in my 'active' rotation, but I'm already forgetting how to play it so I'll probably start over.

Last night I fired up the original  Metal Gear Solid <psx> on my PS2 and I'm already hooked after just an hour into it.

I'm currently playing in addition:

POP:TTT (XBOX) 95% complete
GUN (XBOX) 10% complete

I was enjoying POP:TTT immensely until this happened and have been playing it in fits in spurts since.  It has also taken me forever because a new console arrived and it has monopolized my time.

As I feel I MUST complete nearly every game I buy, I typically play through one at a time.

However, if I'm not particularly enjoying a game but not hating it either, I'll have as many as 3 going at a time, usually of different genres.

But, if I love a game, it's all I'll play until I'm done with it.

That's typically my method too. I usually find that I typically have the right idea about passing a boss or finding something, it's just that I'm not doing it in the exact precise spot or something really simple.  I'm very rarely stumped.
14710  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Use of Walthroughs & FAQs AKA: Just Completed Shadow Hea on: March 22, 2006, 04:15:12 PM
So I'm about to finish my first PS2 RPG: Shadow Hearts.  I've enjoyed the heck out of it, but near the end I acquired a power I didn't know how to use.  To the Internet and gamefaqs.com.

While searching for the answer I came across a BUNCH OF STUFF (powers, sidequests, items, etc) that I missed throughout the game.

So my question is: Is it prudent to play a game with the faq close by in order to 'maximize' a game (get everything and see all content) at the risk of getting spoiled or

Is it best to play it through, do the best you can, be surprised repeatedly, and not get all of the items or view all of the content?

I'm wondering now if my enjoyment is lessened because I haven't experienced the whole game...

Just an FYI.

Hetz can't be the only one starting Oblivion topics!

I'm curious as to what characters everyone is planning on creating.  I'm really struggling with this.  I have been reading the strategy guide over and over again on character creation.  This is a very important decision for me to enjoy a game.  If I don't like my character I will hate playing the game.

Right now I'm trying to decide on whether to lean towards a pure mage type or a combon melee/mage type, such as a spellsword.  I'm definitely going to customize as the stategy guide suggests.  I also need to come up with a background too.  It helps when playing the game.  I actually might play two games concurrently using two different characters; one game focusing on the main quest and one focusing on doing other things.  I do have this cool idea of playing a "good necromancer" type character who's main goal is to utilize the dearly departed in an attempt to convince existing necromancers to turn good.  With this character I would pretty much ignore the main quest and focus on gathering info on the undead and what can be done to unite them for the common good.  I wonder if this is feasible in the game?

So, what is everyone thinking about?  Race?  Type?  Character name?  What direction do you see you going with your character in the game?
