Actually, now I'm trying to push the sound through the HDMI cable to the tv and from the tv to the tuner via optical...nothing's easy.

Is there a reason why you can not just have the optical go straight from the DVD player to the tuner?

Well, there's only 2 optical inputs on my tuner. So if I could route all sound (dvd and tv) through one opt from the cable to the tv, I'll be better off as right now I only get digital sound from the dvd player and whichever console is plugged in.

What Ralph said.  It seems like your TV can't decode the sound portion of an HDMi signal.

Well, if there's an HDMI input doesn't that mean that it should?

Quote
did you flash the firmware?  I believe there was an issue with DTS sound that required the firmware upgrade.

This shall be my last resort.

However, whenever I turn a movie on, I get 'HDMI sound not supported' flashed across the screen and no sound whatsoever..

I've checked the settings and all appears to be set correctly.

Any ideas?

Make sure that the DVD player is set to output via optical and not from HDMI in the DVD player settings menu.  Hard to be more specific without seeing the DVD player manual.

14689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Game in 'Inside Man': Is it real? on: September 09, 2006, 05:34:26 PM
Rented Inside Man with Denzel, Jodie and Clive last night (excellent btw) and one of the hostages has a PSP.

They show a game being played which looks like it would be GTA or something (never played it) where the kid shoots a guy in a drive by.  He hits him, the guy's wounded and this is what happens next:

The words "Kill the nigga." pop up on the screen.

The guy gets out of the car. Caps him a few times.

Then he pulls a grenade out and puts it into the dead guy's mouth.

He walks away and the head explodes all over the brick wall.

I LOL'd cause it was so ridiculous and assured my wife that anything with 'Kill the nigga.' would never make it through to production.

But then I thought: I've never played GTA or any of its many clones and this could have been real. Also, would Sony let a fake game be displayed on their hardware?  Hence, I'm here. Is that a real game?

I've never bought a screen protector, have used the DS extensively, and the screen looks brand new. Nintendo has a history of making extremely durable products and with the DS lite it's no exception. Of course I can't fault anyone for being protective, but you should know that it''s not a necessity.

This was the argument (not that you're arguing) against screen protectors at CAG too.  IMHO, I think it's well worth the 9 bones shipped to make sure that no scratches get on the screens.  It has actually brought me quite a bit of piece of mind.

I would recommend the hori's without hesitation- just take your time putting them on. I had to order two sets cause I'm an idiot and botched the first application.

This actually raises another question:

Right now I have audio going optical out of the DVD player into my tuner to ensure that I get DTS or 5.1 as appropriate.

With an HDMI hookup, does the HDMI cable also push the audio or just the picture?  If it includes the audio, should I just let the connection from the TV to the receiver be optical...will this still produce DTS/5.1?

What type of connection are you using- component (red, blue, green), S-Video, or composite (yellow)?  Sounds to me like you might have a busted pin on an S-Video cable or something.

I'm using yellow.  Actually it's a white (aren't they the same?).  As I said above it's the exact same configuration I've used with the other DVD player with no problems.  Should I try an actual video cable (yellow)?

Cross post with BC, but I know that the audience here at GT is very up to date on tech so here it is:

I've purchased an HDMI capable upscan dvd player.

I'm not using HDMI at present as I don't have a cable.

I have plugged it in precisely the same way my previous DVD player was plugged in.

Problem: There's a washed out gray color on the entire screen. Black is gray. White is grayish/white etc. I've adjusted some of the settings (contrast, brightness, etc) to no avail.

It was suggested that the picture quality might suffer because it's not going through HDMI and I thought of that as well...but that doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I'm not worried about the upscan, just the washed out picture...

Any suggestions?

Turns out it works on the 2nd drive which means the first one- the one I really need the data from- is 100% SNAFU.

I simply can't envision any longevity in the Wii's lifespan.

This is a very interesting point that I hadn't thought of.  Again it depends all upon Nintendo's ability(and the software houses that develop for it) to remain innovative and use the new control scheme to its maximum impact.

Again citing Romero (designer threads is a really neat GS feature), he said that Sony development is prohibitive because of cost and also because Sony is such a closed and tightly maintained platform whereas the Will will provide folks the ability to innovate...

Hopefully that will keep it fresh.  Heck, if people have thought of new ways to innovate game play based upon the ancient technology that is the Dual Shock/S-Controller, I'm hopeful folks will do the same for the Wii.

Hmm. I'd be skeptical that it would work. I've played castles and while it is an immensely fun game in real life, I'm not sure how it would translate to DS. If it's a wholly online game I could see that being fun, but would they try to make it into a SP game?

Nothing says love like a .50AE Desert Eagle.

That is one expensive piece of handgun you have there.

I've wanted to fire one for years now, but I'm honestly afraid it'll just snap my hand right off my wrist or something smile

Oh I wish it was mine.  I'll be buying one eventually.  Once you've fired one you can't go back...

Sure you can. .50 cals are a joke.  The concussion from firing one of those things is absurd and I don't know how anyone can be accurate with them unless they have the greatest physical strength (which you apparently do, sir.)

My brother used to have one and you could feel the concussion from that gun standing 10 feet away. I fired it and found it to be far too heavy and the recoil far too strong to be of any use other than a 'HOLY S*!*, he's firing a .50 cal at us! Let's get out of here!' type weapon...well that and to shoot through brick walls to hit the target slywink For that type situation, I'd prefer a shotgun...

I much prefer my Sig .40 as it's compact (as semi-auto's go) and fits nicely in an inside the waistband holster.

That said, it has been years since it has been fired and years since my expanding gut could comfortably carry it concealed.  I've been thinking about heading back to the range, but the cost of time plus ammo turns me off.

What will make this even funnier is if the PS3 is the dominant console by the end of the generation.

What determines dominance? Install base?  I think I read somewhere or saw it referenced here that Wii is supposed to have 5,000,000 sold by the end of the year? Maybe I'm mixing up my numbers, but I don't know how Sony could come back from that or MS will catch that figure unless the Wii absolutely blows and word of mouth sinks it.

Either way, I've said all along that I don't think Sony will win this generation.  I just don't see it happening. But I'm hardly 'in the know'.

If they're only launching with 100k in Japan... I'd bet that the vast majority of new systems go to Japan for the following 3 months or so.  Maybe a trickle to the US.

The more I think about this the more it makes no sense. Playstation has been on top for SO many years in Japan that I cannot fathom why they are abusing their most loyal fanbase (maybe that answers the question).

They should ship the whole lot to Japan and make the US wait until next year to get it.

Looks like this will be round two of the failed global launch. Possibly round 3 if Nintendo muffs it...but their launch numbers seem really high, so maybe not.
