14521  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / And the Joker could be... on: August 01, 2006, 05:57:24 PM
If Dark Knight is half as good as BR, then I can't wait.

Heath Ledger is the perfect choice for the 'you can kinda see it kinda can't' person to fill the role...just like TM as mentioned.

I'm excited to see what he and the director do with it.

Correction. It's ATB's avatar unceremoniously stolen and butchered by TML.  Oh and it's not gay. It's hellah.

I love the strip but have never seen the show.  Is the show exactly like the strip?

Or is it dirty with swearing and naughty bits and stuff?

I suppose I could give Dragon Quest another go.  I got killed in the first dungeon and lost interest.

I'm playing this right now. I died several several times in the first dungeon.

After that, the game really opens up. I'm about 23 hrs into it...It's simply exquisite.
14525  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 20 gayest video game characters on: August 01, 2006, 01:09:14 PM
It's weird. I'm not familiar with hardly any of those characters.

Peddlers in Shadow Hearts: Cov. Sure. Haven't gotten to that other guy though.

Zangief- yes, have played with and against him, don't agree though.

Not far enough in MGS:3 to reach the gay major.

Vamp. Yep. Fa lay ming, as homer would say.

And that's it.

I have not heard of anyone else on that list.

Tingle?  What Zelda game(s) was he in? I started but never got far in Ocarina...

Spent the bulk of my time on DragonQuest VIII. It's really starting to click now and I'm enjoying it immensely. My characters are 21 and 20 levels...good times.

Put away Animal crossing. Can't get into it. Will try again later.

Played some Mario Kart too.
14527  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DQVIII: Morrie's Place on: July 31, 2006, 12:59:20 PM
You all know it, the game is a hoot.

A question about Morrie's Place (spoilers about MP and main quest points).

He's given me the memos, but I believe I've already defeated 2 of the 3 monsters.

Does this mean that I can't complete this side quest or do they not appear in the game until you get the memos?

I ask the question cause in my exploring I discovered the moon door location prior to it being 'unlocked'...so I'm hoping that the same is true of these monsters.

Thanks.
14528  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Why is the first Xbox still $180? on: July 31, 2006, 12:56:01 PM
I'm bitter at the way MS has abandoned the XBOX. Bitter.  It's a slap in the face, IMO.  I have a backlog of a bout 10 games still to be played on it and I will get to them, but between the DS and the PS2 it gets almost no attention now and it's partially because nothing is coming out for it.

As for the pricing, it's weird that they'd go up....stupid.  MS has given up on last gen while PS2 is still cranking.
14529  Gaming / Analog Gaming / No More E3?! on: July 31, 2006, 03:58:57 AM
From BC

Quoting from Gamespot

My xposted thoughts from BC:

well, i like e3 because all the fancy stuff is rolled out at the event and it's sort of a unifying event for all of video gaming.

however, I'm not shedding no tears and I hope that several smaller shows will provide more depth and impact both to the hobby overall and especially to mid to small devs.

I bought breakaway about a month ago.  It's a fabulous album from start to finish.

Fabulous!

Then I go and buy her debut- STINKBOMB.

But breakaway is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.

GEYSER!

Spoiler for Hiden:

In the desert where you have to have the geysers knock the dude over?

If so, this perfectly ties into one of my problems with the game.  The puzzle element- determining how to best whip the colossi- is too simple.  I mentioned in my write up of it some time ago that the game should allow you to turn off the hints if you like...or give you a system for earning hints.  The geyser colossus was one of the easier ones to figure out---though not necessarily execute...

One of the brilliant ones is where you have to figure out that the guy needs to slam down on that concrete plate to shatter its armor.  That was amazing.

Others, I was just on the cusp of figuring out what to do and the voice tells me. Gah! Not enough  sense of discovery in the battles, imo

I was gonna say that Nintendo is so clearly the winnar of everything, everyone else has submitted.

Nintendo is the hobbits at the end of Return of the King. Everyone is bowing down before them in reverence...even those once divided by all the conflict.

In the book Sarumon enslaves the Hobbit race. The movie glazed over that.

Yes, but only temporarily until the heroic return! Don't you know that Mario successfully returned the triforce to Mt. Doom?  He overcame the dark hordes of port of a ports and saved Middle Gaming with his fresh take on how fun should be had!  Then he returned and kicked Sir Trite and Master Been-there-done-that, out of the village.

After the credits demon baby (the protagonist in new form) makes an appearance and the girl takes him and the horse to the top of the temple to live happily ever after.

I tihnk the big deal about this one was that it was different... we get a lot of really good games, but we don't get very much different. I think the same goes for the Katamari games.

You know, that could be the reason why we all love this game. There's just nothing to compare it to.

I agree completely. It was magnificently different until the 4th Colossi or so.  Then it was the same thing from then on.

The first time I saw a Colossus I was -blown away-.  Second time,  yep!. 3rd. Still good. 4th ok. 5th...hmm 6th..ho hum 7th. meh 8th etc.

If there is a sequel or prequel or whatever and they flesh out a different variety of fights- not based on gimmicks, but on real variance- the game will be a surefire masterpiece.

A gross dissapointment based on the hype.

Said the guy who:

- Wasn't able to get into God of War.

- Loves KotOR.

- Put MGS3 "back on the shelf."

All good points that underly my excellent taste.   Let's go item by item:

- Wasn't able to get into God of War.:  Indeed.  Played through part of the first level and it didn't jive with me. However, it is one of the reasons I bought the PS2 to begin with. Time just wasn't right

- Loves KotOR.: No doubt. As does 95% of the rest of the world. Starshifter, disturbed by your lack of faith, has been dispatched to your house.

- Put MGS3 "back on the shelf.": Hot off the heals of MGS2 which is a masterpiece, I was not ready for the complete paradigm shift in gameplay and pacing.  I played through the first mission about a dozen times to get the hang of it and put it away- again temporarily.  Someone, in my thread,  said that the game doesn't pick up until after the first mission so my initial malaise was hardly misplaced.

Nice Avatar.
14558  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Please Explain Animal Crossing: Wild World to me on: July 25, 2006, 02:21:15 AM
I bought this today for 23.00 based largely on the Designer Threads podcast on Gamespot with Secret of Monkey Island Designer Ron Gilbert (it's a great interview, btw).  It has great reviews and I did peruse the Animal Crossing thread here but quickly got lost as I've never played an AC games. It's still sealed sitting in the bag.

Navarro's vid review on GS sort of left me feeling that it's kind a like a sims game in that you do some mundane tasks but somehow they turn out to be fun and addictive.

I can't seem to gather a real sense of this game from reviews (and sadly my favorite gaming related site again does not have a coveted DS review that I've wanted and this seems to be a bit of a trend...unless I don't know where to look-<why aren't DS reviews filterable?>).

So I'd very much like inputs couched, if you can, from the perspective of someone who has no idea what this game is about, has tried to grasp but can't do the math.

Or is this one of those you can't describe it, just play it, you'll love it games?
