Hmm. Given that the thread on the game is double digits in length, I expected a much more positive response.

Now I don't know what to do.

Now that is actually a very good point.  You're absolutely right. It did a great job of making you believe you were but a small piece to a giant world and it should get kudos for that. Definitely.

But, btw, did I mention that one of my complaints was you spend more time looking for the Colossi than you do battling them? slywink frown

I tihnk the big deal about this one was that it was different... we get a lot of really good games, but we don't get very much different. I think the same goes for the Katamari games.

You know, that could be the reason why we all love this game. There's just nothing to compare it to.

I agree completely. It was magnificently different until the 4th Colossi or so.  Then it was the same thing from then on.

The first time I saw a Colossus I was -blown away-.  Second time,  yep!. 3rd. Still good. 4th ok. 5th...hmm 6th..ho hum 7th. meh 8th etc.

If there is a sequel or prequel or whatever and they flesh out a different variety of fights- not based on gimmicks, but on real variance- the game will be a surefire masterpiece.

SO O-VER-RA-TED.

A gross dissapointment based on the hype.

Said the guy who:

- Wasn't able to get into God of War.

- Loves KotOR.

- Put MGS3 "back on the shelf."

All good points that underly my excellent taste.   Let's go item by item:

- Wasn't able to get into God of War.:  Indeed.  Played through part of the first level and it didn't jive with me. However, it is one of the reasons I bought the PS2 to begin with. Time just wasn't right

- Loves KotOR.: No doubt. As does 95% of the rest of the world. Starshifter, disturbed by your lack of faith, has been dispatched to your house.

- Put MGS3 "back on the shelf.": Hot off the heals of MGS2 which is a masterpiece, I was not ready for the complete paradigm shift in gameplay and pacing.  I played through the first mission about a dozen times to get the hang of it and put it away- again temporarily.  Someone, in my thread,  said that the game doesn't pick up until after the first mission so my initial malaise was hardly misplaced.

Nice Avatar.
14408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Please Explain Animal Crossing: Wild World to me on: July 25, 2006, 02:21:15 AM
I bought this today for 23.00 based largely on the Designer Threads podcast on Gamespot with Secret of Monkey Island Designer Ron Gilbert (it's a great interview, btw).  It has great reviews and I did peruse the Animal Crossing thread here but quickly got lost as I've never played an AC games. It's still sealed sitting in the bag.

Navarro's vid review on GS sort of left me feeling that it's kind a like a sims game in that you do some mundane tasks but somehow they turn out to be fun and addictive.

I can't seem to gather a real sense of this game from reviews (and sadly my favorite gaming related site again does not have a coveted DS review that I've wanted and this seems to be a bit of a trend...unless I don't know where to look-<why aren't DS reviews filterable?>).

So I'd very much like inputs couched, if you can, from the perspective of someone who has no idea what this game is about, has tried to grasp but can't do the math.

Or is this one of those you can't describe it, just play it, you'll love it games?

This clip is such a classic.  Wow. I love how the crowd goes bananas when Hogan slams Andre.  You can just tell how much people loved Hogan and the other major players back in the day.

Is it still this way or is it all cynical and jaded?  There was still an innocence about wrestling back then. Good guys vs bad guys and still speculation about 'the realness' of it all.

Just great.

14414  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / TV Purchase conundrum: on: July 24, 2006, 01:46:00 PM
Dad bought a tv at Bestbuy.  We had a 12% off coupon and it ended up being 3200 and some change after tax they had to order it from the wherehouse so he doesn't have it yet.

Same tv is available on line for 2900 shipped from http://www.shopsunshine.com/item.php?item_id=18512

They're lifetime reseller rating is 8.26 which is very good but their customer service/return rating  rating is 5.75 which is pretty low.

Dad is a fossil and is wary of online retailers in teh event something's wrong with the box..but He can save almost 400 buying online. How would you advise him?

14416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wii Release: Will it be like DS Lite or 360? on: July 24, 2006, 11:25:40 AM
Thanks to my pops buying a fat tv at bestbuy I'm going to be getting around 110.00 in reward certs that I'd like to parlay into a Wii purchase.

However, in your professional opinions, will the Wii release be:

A: Like the DS Lite.  Many stores sold through initial shipments, but they were replenished very quickly. Some stores even had plenty left over from original shipments

B: Like the 360 where there's 100 in all of America and there won't be many more on shelves until 4-6 months after launch.

Thoughts?

edit: The impact being of course the expiration dates on the certs and also whether I preorder from someplace...

I had NP back when it first started (even got ink with my super high CONTRA score), but haven't looked at it in oh...at lest 15 years.  Nestor still around?

By the way, how do you register more than 4 titles. No matter what I do I can only see 4 and when I reenter the codes it says they've already been entered. Do'h!
14425  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone ever quit their job with little or no notice? on: July 20, 2006, 01:03:34 PM
I may have missed it but how long did you work for that company?

I quit a place after 2 weeks because they were an immoral entitity bilking old people out of money with fraudulent or near fraudlent claims about the products it sold.

I would have stayed on just long enough to find a new job, but the boss basically said I had to make a decision of whether I was staying or going. I left that day.

Since it was only a 2 week stint...maybe 3, i just left it off my employment history.  Sounds like that may not be an option in your case.

Also note though: Bad reassignment is a legitimate option to quit, so you can still list it on your resume and when asked about it, say that it was time to move on because of commute or bad work environment or whatever...of course, i guess a jail is always going to be a bad work environment so I dunno....

14427  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Has Portable Gaming Changed Your Gaming Habits? on: July 20, 2006, 12:37:13 PM
As the dozens of you who have joined the ATB fanclub know from my recent newsletter, I'm still in love with the DS lite, having grabbed it on launch day.  It, has in fact, become one of those watershed purchases in my gaming history- the first since my acquisition of the XBOX in 2002 completely steered me away from more than a decade of PC only gaming.

Habits that have changed since the acquisition of my DS Lite:

1. I've significantly cut back on my console playing as the 'hassle' of powering up the tv, the console and the surround sound system is now too much effort whereas the DS gives me near instant gratification

2. I am currently engaged in Octo-simultaneous play whereas previously on the consoles and even back on the PC, I almost always played one game from start to finish before firing up another.  Currently on the DS I'm playing (in order of most time to least): Advanced Wars: DS, Brain Age, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright, New Super Mario Bros, Brain Age and  Trauma Center.  Zounds!

3. I play in places where I never thought I would play (public): I've broken the DS out at Doctor's offices, oil change companies, and other venues.  Gaming for me is coming out of the closet, as it were

4. I play in places where I NEVER thought I would play (private): <cough> in the bathroom.  I even, uh, bring it with me when I go to my work's HQ, drop the sound all the way down and play when I'm in the men's restroom at work.  Yah baby!

5. As a direct result of #4 the amount of time I spend reading has dropped significantly.  I'm hard pressed to read my two favorite magazines at all now: Wired and The Economist.  Also, my brief flirtation with the novel, rekindled by the masterpiece The Three Muskateers has been put on hiatus.

6. I no longer dread trips out of town.  I've done a bit of travel lately and the DS has come with me to every location.  It's a great go to when there's nothing to do or I need a quick fix before bed when in a strange land

7. Interrupted sleep patterns.  Specifically due to 6, when I'm on the road my schedule is already off and this is exacerbated by my staying up 30 mins to an hr longer than I intended to deal some damage to Black Hole.

8. I've started wearing gamer T-shirts.  Yes, my wife bought me the 'I have control issues' shirt with a an N64 controller on it, but since getting the DS and falling more and more in love with Nintendo, I've purchased several others...and wear them in public.

9. I have introduced gaming to my oldest child: 3.5.  While I don't want my kids to be as hooked on gaming as I am, I have let the oldest play whack a mole on NSMB as well as play a bit of Mario Kart.  Previously, as almost all my games for the console are M or T rated, I only played after they went to bed.  Still, I don't let it interfere with 'daddy' time, but it is becoming more mainstream

10.  I finally got teh wife to play something...briefly.  I thought she would enjoy brain age, but she didn't care for it telling her 'how stupid she is' when, upon her first try, her brain age was 81.  Despite my explanations that it would get easier as she acquired the familiarity with the device, the door has not only once again been slammed, but deadbolted.  My mother in law loved BA.  She lives 6 hrs away though.

Was paying 1330+ for a 1300 sq ft rambler with a basement  in Leesburg VA and had to refinance 3 times to keep it that low.

Moved to NC and now have a 3000sqft house for 1030 per month...of course with the proceeds from house A were able to buy down the mortgage a bit on house B.

14430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HDTV for gaming.. on: July 19, 2006, 02:16:58 AM
When we moved to NC, the room we wanted to place the tv in in the new house couldn't fit our GIGANTIC CRT Magnavox 32 inch so we left it behind.

We bought the 30 inch Samsung slimfit widescreen with built in HD tuner....couldn't be happier.  Although I won't pay for digital cable/satellite, I don't have to because our omni-directional antenna picks up HD signals fine and it was only 70.00 at radio shack.

I don't have any gaming rigs that play in Hi def, but might in the future...though the Wii is my first pick of next gen console.  Graphics just aren't that big of a seller for me.

Two categories:

GOTY for games released in 2006

GOTY for games played in 2006 regardless of year

GOTY 2006

I haven't played that many releases from 2006-

PS2: None played

DS: New Super Mario Bros: A nostalgic hoot.

XBOX: None Played

GOTY: NSMB

GOTY Played in 2006

PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Hands down one of the best devised stories I've ever played in a game. Brilliant from start to finish.

DS: Kirby: Canvas Curse. Though I haven't finished it yet, it's just an amazingly well executed implementation of the DS's touchscreen capabilities.

XBOX: Panzer Dragoon Orta- The oldest game in my collection not to be played was marvelous on an epic scale.

GOTY: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of liberty

Wait and see.

And Bush doesn't need to pardon Osama.  There is nothing to forgive, he performed as expected.

Is anyone actually surprised that a family heading a war profiteer firm entered office preaching "war without end"?  Anyone supporting the Bushs and their cronies doesn't know (or want to know) much about them.

Anyone who opposed them politically "just hates Bush".
Anyone who breaks ranks and reveals the corruption "is just disgruntled and has an axe to grind".

You know things are bad when ex-Nixon people are saying GWB's administration is worse than Nixon.

Anyway, I'm going to stop, since this is just ranting.  If anyone wants some suggestions for info sources, you can start with "House of Bush, House of Saud", check out the Walsh report on Iran-Contra, then work your way out from there.
