14241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So I finally Pre-ordered a DS on: May 23, 2006, 11:53:03 AM
Quote from: "stiffler"
I wish the US was getting the sleek EU black one.

Or at least the blue one.

Sigh... white.  Maybe it will hide fingerprints better?

I was planning on waiting for  a color, but then I read on (CNET i think) that the black/blue ones really show scratches.  I didn't bother to search around for more corroboration, and went for it.

Besides, white things are easier to see so when it's in the bottom of my bag or whatever I can spot it no sweat.
14242  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Keeping Games Forever? on: May 22, 2006, 05:38:36 PM
A serious question, to you, my brothers:  Is there a point to keeping games forever?

I was tooling around on ebay and saw a collection of PS2 games for sale and it's fetching 200.00, which is no small chunk of change.

I have a lot of great XBOX games that I could bundle together and attempt to sell- though I know I would take an overall loss (but that's still more than I'd get with them sitting on my shelf)- chances are I'll never play them again and the extra dough would help offset future costs (Wii, DS, games, etc).

It's a very rare game that I rate as a permanent addition to my collection (though the ratio of xbox games is rather high) and I'm wondering if any game should rate that.

Games that I hold back are what I consider the best of the generation (Prince of Persia Trilogy, Halos, KOTOR, Ninja Gaiden, etc) and ones that I'd like to go back to eventually.  Thing is, I almost never do (Ninja Gaiden WILL be the exception).  So should I hang on to them as a part of nostalgia or possibly the chance to cash in on them many years from now on Antiques Roadshow or unload them now to fund future purchases.

I'm not a 'collector' per se nor am I particularly sentimental about gaming.  I have great memories and there are some games I still wish I would have kept (Mike Tyson's Punchout, LucasArts adventures etc), but I don't know that I would ever really play them again.

Thoughts?

Oh well. Signed up for EGM.
14244  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / EGM, OPM, and CGW - Free Again on: May 22, 2006, 03:53:44 PM
Is EGM a good general gaming mag?

I'd like to get the playstation one, but I figure it's one sided like OXM.

Don't care about cgw.

Thoughts?
14245  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Most anticipated games? on: May 22, 2006, 03:27:42 PM
Hmm. It seems to me that I'm more excited for the hardware than any game in particular.

Tops of the list is the Wii- but I've heard some good and bad about hands on experiences (which is fine since it's still pretty early).

As for specific games, Spore looks interesting, but Will Wright games have always bored me to tears so I probably won't get it.

Thus my answer is: NONE.
14246  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Super Mario Bros. on: May 22, 2006, 01:16:43 PM
I missed the 28.00 sale at CC. Where's the cheapest place to buy this?
14247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So I finally Pre-ordered a DS on: May 22, 2006, 01:10:29 PM
Using this Phat Deal.

I know it's overstock and a lot of people on the CAG forums are complaining about delays, but I'm not in a terrible hurry to get it.

This thread serves a few purposes:

1. I was going to ask for game recommendations (thoughI hate doing that) but there's quite a few threads on that so nevermind...with exception...see number 2:

2. I will need fellow gamers to wifi battle and have already ordered Mario Kart...what other games have good multiplayer/wifi support?

3. To raise the visibility of the pre-order deal and get CheapyD some $$$ cause he's suffering under the eb games/gamestop merger (if there's a GT affiliate code, by all means switch it out)

4. Say that I have been assimilated into the handheld club (first handheld since my little Burgertime game back in 1980)

5.  Let everyone know that I've blown the money I had saved up, so getting a Wii is gonna be tough and forum effect (read any and all game recommendations) must cease. Please oblige.

6. I love you. I love you all (except maybe LE who I like, but not LIKE like)

So when I get it in....July or so or whenever, i'll be posting again about needing fellow players.  I haven't played any Mario Kart in, oh, 11 years so I'll be easy prey...
14248  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / DS Lite Preorder at Overstock.com for $116ish on: May 22, 2006, 01:00:05 PM
From Cheap Ass Gamer:

You have to be registerd CAG to see it . If you're not already, I'd recommed signing up...they have all the fat deals and have saved me (and cost me, as in this deal) lots of $$$.

I could no longer hold out buying one...
14249  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you playing this weekend? 05/19/06 on: May 20, 2006, 01:21:55 AM

14250  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Halo 2 SP worth playing? on: May 19, 2006, 11:40:39 AM
It's definitely worth a play through. Having knowledge that it's an incomplete game (the ending) should take some of the sting out of that slap in the face.

The levels are hardly all that inspiring (except for the couple that happen on earth), but it's well worth a play through...

I'm sorry you have such terrible taste in games, ATB.

I mean, it's not news to me, but I'm still sorry nonetheless.

Of course, since you think every game sucks, I take this as a compliment.

Edit: And no one has yet explained the ending...

Finished it. Am I supposed to understand what in the heck that meant?  Does one have to have played ICO to get it?

Blech. It loses a half grade. Final mark: C

Game of this generation?  FAH!

Oh and
Spoiler for Hiden:
Of course the stupid horse lived. Final challenge should have been devil baby versus the horse. HOW STUPIDDD!

Does one have to have played ICO to get it?
14253  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SotC: SO Overrated on: May 18, 2006, 05:41:56 PM
I shall draw my fair share of hatred for this, but: Shadow of the Colossus is by far the most over rated game I've played since Chronicles of Riddick. I'm on the last Colossus and cannot wait for this game to be over.

Things I don't like:

The horse controls (so unresponsive, static and aggravating)
The horse
Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm glad it died. True the death was compelling and even moving, but man I hated that horse

The way the kid runs- what's that about?
They way there's no story to speak of (at least not yet, 15/16 into the game)
The way you spend more time looking for the colossi than you do fighting them
The camera (not a big problem but occaisionally quite frustrating)
The repetitiveness of the battles (some are brilliant, most are far too similar)
The lackluster AI, rather the lack of any AI.  The colossi behavior is entirely forumulaic:

Spoiler for Hiden:
You're telling me that when a little peanut sized dude is climbing on top of a colossus stabbing it in its most sensitive of areas, all it's gonna do is shake? Why no grabs with the hands?  Why not just fall down and crush it under its weight? This would make for interesting game play...you have to swing out of the way or jump off just in time....I mean even the giant in PoP: WW made grabs at you that you had to duck...edit. May have been PoP:TT...

The game is very short (which is saying something coming from me).  However, this is a good thing as it is an agony to me to play it. Well, maybe not an agony...

and most of all:

It's far too easy.  Once you have figured out the colossi behavior or easily ascertained the rudimentary environmentally based strategic advantages, the battles are almost always one two three done.  Also, the hints from the 'light being' are annoying too. Several times I was just on the cusp of figuring out what to do- perhaps off by my location a step or two or in the process of panning the camera to see where to go, and the hint comes in and spills it all.  How about this in the eventual sequel: You have to find special....rocks or flowers or something.  If you're in a battle and you have no idea how to kill the thing, you offer up one of the flowers in exchange for a hint...that way you only get as many hints as flower rocks you find and only WHEN YOU WANT THEM. I couldn't find a way to turn them off.

As it sits right now, I give SotC a C+. If there's an amazing ending it might get a B-.

The Colossi for the most part are incredibly well animated and the scale is done exceedingly well.  But man is it humdrum and I don't know why it has so taken everyone by storm.
14254  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Sam & Max Episodic trailer out on: May 18, 2006, 12:31:09 PM
Ok Ok. I never played S&M back in the day, but the trailer is crazy delicious.  I presume it was a joyful experience a la Full Throttle and that game that I love whose name I cannot think of for the life of me with Manny....dia de la muerte....

What's the scoop. By episodic they mean what? Is it exclusively from Gametap?

What the dilio?

Very awesome.  I think I would like it better if the tv wasnt in the corner though.  Just makes it look less subtle.  Good timing though!  Well played.

Yeah it would have been better if the tv was turned away or possibly off screen. Following the picture link though he stated he wanted a picture of Contra in the comic since it was the most famous use of the code.

And it would be a nice shirt but the Title would have to be changed somehow. Either a different font or remove and put something like 30 Lives beneath it.

And a picture of the spreader gun on the back.

I read an interview with William Daniels (the guy who did the voice of KITT in Knight Rider) just before that newer version of it came out (was it Knight Rider 2000?).  He said he had to spend a few weeks trying to sound just like he did while doing the series.

an interesting bit of trivia...did you know there's a voice connection between Knight Rider and Transformers?  there's an episode of Knight Rider where you meet KARR, the prototype to KITT, which turned out to be evil because it was not programmed to protect human life.  KARR was in two episodes of Knight Rider, and was voiced by peter cullen in the first...the same guy who did the voices of Optimus Prime and Ironhide in the Transformers Cool

I just read that on IMDB this morning!

How long until I can perhaps grasp someone's Wii on Ebay?

I talked to this kid online once who said he had a wii.  He said that even though he was only 11 years old, I could come over to his house and play with his wii.  But when I got there, Dateline NBC was waiting for me.  They were asking me all these questions like why I came to play with this 11 year old's wii, and I told them because I couldn't wait any longer, I had to have his wii.  I needed it so, so, so, so bad.

Yeah I'm sorry, this wii joke cannot be salvaged. frown

<sigh> I hate to encourage this, but the joke+pop culture reference (the unbelievably omnipresent dateline pedophile busting stories)+gamer's tilt= a solid B in the joke category.

Now you must never traverse this territory again.

14267  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Who finished Ninja Gaiden? on: May 16, 2006, 12:46:09 PM
Ahh...my number 3 XBOX title of all time.

This was the first and only XBOX title that I ever pre-ordered.  Then I got the demo on OXM and started sweating.  I didn't dig it.  I figured what the heck and kept the pre-order.

I replayed the first level several times to get the controls down and once I was able to beat the first level boss without great difficulty, I moved on.  And thus, a love was born.

NG's cutscenes are still perhaps the best I've ever seen and I'm not sure how Team Ninja coaxed such smooth cinematics out of the BOX (especially the boobs   <how ridiculous>).

There were some frustrating moments, sure, but the biggest complaint that I remember was that girl boss (whose name I can't remember) but it only took me a 1/2 dozen times to beat her.

I did beat the original on Normal and planned to get back to it-still do. However, I'll probably play it through on the normal again since it has been 2 years...

What a masterpiece.

So, admittedly, the first few times you see a colossus, it's impressive.  I've done away with 6...but it's now just repetition. Find the proper way to climb on, stab the weak spot, repeat.

I have a feeling there is a plot twist coming (NO SPOILERS PLEASE) and am trying to be patient.

Does the formula change at all?  Is there more story development? Character development?

I mean, he's killing these beautiful creatures to raise some chick from the dead.  Whatever, right now I'm siding with the colossi. frown smile

14272  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / KOTOR 3 News? on: May 14, 2006, 07:27:14 PM
KOTOR 2 was a masterpiece.  I didn't notice the lack of ending until people complained about it.  In retrospect, I can see how it tarnishes the game, but what's of paramount importance to me is that as I played through that game I was mesmerized.  It still ranks as my #1 XBOX game of all time.  KOTOR is #2.

I don't know that Pt 3 would be enough to make me get a 360, but I'd definitely like to play it and see Obsidian do the crafting.

I'm genuinely excited about something and I can't remember the last time I felt genuinely excited about something game related...

Actually, yes I can: the lead up to The first Medal of Honor- the demo was amazing.  I was sorely disappointed.  That was 2002.

14280  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS or Wii on: May 11, 2006, 01:40:11 PM
I'm not a rich man, but I have around 140.00 saved up for free spending and figure that between now and Wii release I can put together another 150.00.  So figure 290.00 to spend.

What should I do?

In my house, Wii intentionally have but one television.  So, as you may discern, when it is otherwise occupied during the television primetime season (which happens periodically) or when we have company (far more now than ever before) and they take in a show or two, my limited game time plummets as I have no access to my outlet.

PC gaming is out as I'm still not interested in revisiting any of my quite old unfinished games or buying any new ones, so a DS seems like a fine solution.

I don't travel much, but on the occaisional trip, it'd be handy.  There are probably between 6-12 games that I have interest in and of those dozen about 4 I'd REALLY like to play. I'd wait for non-white lite before I purchased so....

Then there's the Wii.  I'd love to have one out of the chute, thus making it my first launch console ever as I pretty much like everything I've read about them. However, the above problem isn't solved by adding a new console.

So figuring that I'd have the resources to do one but not the other around the time when Wii launches (I figure there will be colored DSes by then), what would you do or what do you recommend?
