13961  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ideal Game Length For You? on: October 16, 2006, 10:10:37 AM
Might should be in general gaming, but...

What's your ideal game length?

Based on a comment by Kevin Grey in some thread somewhere and listening to an old 1up Yours podcast, the topic has been on my brain.

There are many variables to consider 10 hrs of genius is better than 30 hrs of crap. Additionally there's cost to time played ratio, but if you parse it down to what your schedule is, your RL commitments, etc,  overall what's your ideal length for a game.

I'll stick to what I replied to KG and go with 11-20 leaning toward the upper end of that range as a game of that length, unless I stay up late and neglect sleep, will last me weeks and weeks.  20 to 30 hr games also fit within the sweet spot.

Update:

Well, instead of waiting around on Amazon, I jumped on the 360+3 games for 459.00 shipped from outpost.

I'm planning on selling Saint's Row and Test Drive Unlimited on Ebay and making Dead Rising my first 'next gen' experience.

Hopefully, I'll find time to have it done by GoW's release date.
13963  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Weekend Recap 16/Oct/06 on: October 16, 2006, 09:52:07 AM
For me, it was a pretty good gaming weekend. I got about 3 hours of Killer 7 in.  I also watched the first cutscene that really truly bothered me.

This game is whacked, but unique and that's why I'll keep going.

All the industry up and leaving, there's nothing to do there but eat and drink and get fat dying.

MDK is pretty unusual.  What an underappreciated series that was.  I wish they'd make a third.

Hard Boiled is a great movie. The gunfight throughout the hallways of that one place (spoiler free!) is an epic example of action, special effects and camera work.

OMG!  Max Payne 1/2 are two of my favorite games.  This looks incredible. Hopefully, I'll have GoW done by then so I can buy it  icon_biggrin

I've also gotten the itch to dig up Metal Arms from my box of oldies and give it a try on the 360.

One of my favorite games this generation. If you haven't played it at all, you're in for a treat. The humor is awesome, the gameplay is nice and varied and the levels are a hoot.

Huzzah for you!

Certainly not as slick as the 360, but people need to keep in mind that the reason the buttons are so big is because you will be using the wiimote to navigate.

Why do the buttons need to be big, I thought the WiiMote was gonna be super sensitive?

Ease of use?

Clint Eastwood interviewed by USAToday. He says some pretty profound stuff and comes across as a wizened veteran of life.

It's a good read.

13987  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Inbox/Outbox/Botox Limits? on: October 13, 2006, 11:49:07 AM
With the old software there was a bar stating your box is x of y full.  When it hit 100 you were basically hosed.

Are there limits on the new ones? I have lotso messages but haven't seen a status yet saying I'm nearing critical message overloadzorz!

Halp?

Wombat on the Cagcast had enormous difficulties (not as bad as you) and he basically got to the point where he called in and said "I want free stuff.' and they gave him a choice of PGR3 or Kameo.

Time to make some noise Arkon.
13990  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Gamers with families, how do you manage playing time on: October 13, 2006, 10:47:20 AM
I'd say I probably play between 3-8 hrs a week.  Most of that time is on the DS during visits to the library, but I can usually sneak in an hour here and there on a consle after the kids have gone to bed.

I used to get almost all of my gaming time in on Friday and Saturday nights when I'd stay up until 1 AM or so (I know crazy late!). However, I'm not able to stay up late on the weekends and game right now due to marathon training (what was I thinking...again?!) but that ends at the end of the month.

We're not big tv people either- our totals this week are in the neighborhood of 6-7 hours so I don't lose much time to that.

My time is so limited and I have such a backlog, I don't know why I'm even getting a 360...
13991  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: What is an 'Action' Game? on: October 13, 2006, 10:42:36 AM

13992  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Weekend Playlist 13/Oct/06 on: October 13, 2006, 10:41:39 AM
I don't know about you, but this week flew by for me despite the fact that I haven't had one good night's sleep.

This weekend sees me finishing up the cabling job for the X360's pending arrival (super shout out to Purge for his help), my son's first birthday bash on saturday and then an evening with PR_GMR, Tareeq and possibly Ralph Wiggam and Captain Caveman.

As for gaming, I'll probably play just Battles of Prince of Persia. I'm on mission 17 of 24. While the story isn't super and the AI isn't perfect (like Advanced Wars DS), I must say again, I'm loving playing it.

Might also get some time in with Killer 7. Possibly Okami if the mood strikes.

Canasta?  Did you grow up as an old lady or something?  icon_wink

You wouldn't understand.  It's a Mars thing.

As for never tasting coffee: I've accidentally tasted it in ice cream. Blech. But as for the real thing it has two strikes against it:

1. I don't care for any hot drinks at all.  Same for cereal.  I like warm cider in the winter once or twice, but scalding hot stuff just doesn't do it for me
2. The smell: I like it some times but some times it is just so gross I don't know what to do.

Yeah - maybe it's nostalgia but every time one of those tracks from Appetite hit my stereo in random play it gets me stoked.  Some great stuff on there - not really the radio stuff, though.

Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, Rocket Queen, It's So Easy, Nightrain, Out Ta Get Me... all great tunes.

Still one of my favorite bands despite their antics and eventual implosion.  Along with Appetite, the two Use Your Illusions still get regular playing time on my CD player.

Use your illusion had some good songs but it seemed to me they were 'trying too hard' on it whereas AfD just seemed to flow out of them...

WEll, absent the Costco return it's still under warranty so I'm sure N would replace it no problems.

I think the PSP is relevant, but the conclusion I draw from that is different.

Is the DS beating the PSP? Yes.
But look at it this way:

What was Nintendo's percentage of handheld marketshare prior to introduction of the PSP?
What is their percentage since the introduction of the PSP?
I've got to think Sony has put a pretty decent dent in those numbers, and just because the PSP isn't the clear "winnah" doesn't mean that it isn't a success. ESPECIALLY given that the development for the device (PSP) has been kind of lackluster, with few titles that really seem like they were made from the ground up just for the PSP.

I guess that's a logical conclusion when N used to have 100% and they now have just 98.9%.

So indeed PSP has had...an impact.

Other than a few hours of Diablo II (in the past 3 months) I've not gamed on my PC at all since.
