Obviously the guy didn't know how to fight.

Obviously not.  I'd have really enjoyed being chosen for that so I could beat Uwe till he felt as bad as I do after watching any of his movies.

So it would be one of those old tyme 100 round fights?  icon_wink

I don't remember the name of the mission, but the mission that stumped me for the longest time was the one where you get three teams of two CO's, each starting in a completely separate part of the map, and the middle of the map has the main capitol for the enemy.  There's also this major cannon at the top of the map pointing south with a huge area of effect.  If the enemy captures a single missile silo, it's game over for the good guys.

I had the hardest time putting a stop to the guys on the right portion of the map, they kept managing to get a missile silo off me and ending the mission.  Then, even when I got past that point, I had a tough time cracking into the enemy capitol area.  I don't remember if the mission was timed or not; I know there were one or two timed missions that gave me a little trouble.

The one you're talking about is during the campaign and yes that one gave me difficulty too.  Your memory is correct in that the first part of that mission is timed as you have to blow up the satellite within 50 minutes- the added caveat as you mentioned, is that if any one of the silos is captured the mission's over.  Once you blow the satellite though, the time requirement ends.  I wonder if there will be another Advance Wars...

Yeah this must be the weekend that everyone has a tough time.

Started with the Pampered Chef party friday night- SO delicious.

I've basically been eating poorly and in larger quantities than normal ever since.  Also, to nurse my shin and hamstring, I didn't do a long run this weekend.

Only ran 4 miles this morning as my lack of nutritional foods robbed me of my energy stores.

I'm sure I've gained at least 2...possibly 3 lbs.

With just over a month left before the marathon, it doesn't look good for me to get to about 180 prior to the race unless I redouble my discipline and avoid any more weekends (or single days) like this.

I probably won't weigh in until Wednesday as I try not to weigh myself on running days.

ATB, just curious but have you played any Zelda games before?

I played the original Zelda and still remember the exact moment when I beat Gannon.

I tried Adventures of Link, but hated the complete perspective change and overhaul of gameplay.

I pretty much abandoned consoles after the Genesis.

Tried to play Ocarina of Time in 2003, but as seems to be typical in the big mario/zelda games,  I got lost/stuck and couldn't figure out where to go and gave up after only a few hours (I know I should attempt this one again...).

I'm looking forward to Twilight Princess and definitely will be trying Phantom Hourglass when it hits DS.
13926  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (9/25) on: September 25, 2006, 01:47:02 PM
Mario vs Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis looks like fun, but I have to start saving up for Wii.  Oh and if I could stop buying games that take 100+ hrs to complete (DQVIII- I'm 1/3 of the way through it) have unlimited replay value (Advanced Wars DS) I might actually get to work on my backlog. Buying Okami last week added apparently another 30 hrs to it  Tongue.

Next game I'm likely to buy is Bully in October...Then GH II in Nov.  Gah.

Looking over that list a second time, I still only see 1 game I want to play.

I have this horrid vision of the Wii becoming like the DS, with legions of really really BAD games, and maybe 6-10 really good ones.  Droves of hits like "Cooking Super Mama" and "Sister puzzle cutefry" being shoved out left and right.

My whole mood on the Wii went from excitement to, ", that looks lame".   crybaby

I'm not sure you're grasping the concept of Wii or DS. Sounds like you're looking for the same ole same ole. The Wii is charting new territory as did the DS before it.  I think you might be more contented with a 360/PS3 as they are just upgrades of everything we've played before.

To echo KG, if the Wii has nearly the amount of quirky absolutely fun games the DS has, I'll be chuffed.

13928  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Weekend Recap: What'd You Play? 25/Sep/06 on: September 25, 2006, 01:40:10 PM
I spent most of the weekend on Advance Wars DS.

I also got some time with Okami and am pleased that it's starting to click with me.  I didn't get much time with it as it was a very busy weekend with house work, a pampered chef party and various other things.
13929  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami impressions on: September 25, 2006, 01:39:05 PM
Didn't get any play time in  yesterday, but after the first fight within the 1st dungeon (guys sitting around a campfire), I'd say there's a budding romance with me and this game.

Spent most of the day  working around the house and trying to beat the toughest scenario I've yet played in Advance Wars DS.
13930  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Advance Wars DS: The Toughest Scenario Ever on: September 25, 2006, 01:36:30 PM
Ring Islands: 2 COs.

You start out pretty much surrounded as you're on the middle island.  The other two COs are on the surrounding land and in between there are two other islands with some cities.  There are (I want to say) 8 shipyards, 10's of vehicle production buildings and a single airport in the upper left.

I have been working off and on on this scenario for weeks encompassing hours and HOURS and HOURS. Saving restarting. Retrying. Repeat.  Trying new COs. Saving. Retrying. Repeat. At night I would fall asleep trying to figure out what to do next. Finally, after 65 game days I was victorious just this morning.

This was the largest engagement I've ever played possibly in any game ever. There were hundreds of units produced on all sides, hundreds lost and in the ongoing war nearly every unit type came into play on all sides.  It was truly a mixed military effort: land, sea and air.

It felt like world war II. Gains. Losses. Gains losses. Gains.  I'd take a city. Lose it. And retake again.

I even reached the unit cap (which is 50) towards the end of the scenario when I had more than turned the tide and was mopping up. My final cash holdings at the end were over 300k.

My final grade was only a C, but I did it.

What a masterpiece.

A final note: This game is so perfectly balanced that there is no way to 'tank rush' in a scenario like this. The AI is geared at a perfect level, rarely makes mistakes and always attempts to effectively counter the units produced and how you use them.  This game is so good there should be a grade above A+...above 10...above 5 stars!

So, for those who have played, what's been the hardest scenario/level?

So how far are you now? Have you finished exploring Kamiki Village? Shinsu field is where things pick up and you start to see what the gameplay is all about.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I just had Susano split the rock (this is as far as I got the first time too).

I'm enjoying it more this time around as I was able to get this far in two sessions rather than five or six.

I'm looking forward to playing again (which is a good sign) later today.

13932  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami impressions on: September 24, 2006, 02:31:52 AM
I'm 1.5 hrs back into it after having started over and it's growing on me but i'm not in love yet.

I see chests that I want to get but have no idea how to get them...

Additionally, don't know if I'm running at all this weekend as my left shin and thigh are sore still from 2 days ago.

Pst. 25% is not very many people. Rising, yes. But over the course of what? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years?

Nintendo will roll out an upgraded/updated console with HD when the market research supports that that's what the target audience has.

Argh.  Played for another hr and I just cannot get into it.

I'm going to wipe my save data and start over as it appears the initial spurts I've played it in have been rather detrimential to my overall comprehension and enjoyment.  Perhaps tomorrow night I can get in a good couple of hours straight and things will come together.

....which is pathetic in this day and age.

Ack, that sucks.  I was seriously considering pre-ordering, but not if it doesn't support HD.  I don't think I could go back to playing games at 480p after seeing the glory of 720p and 1080i gaming on my LCD tv.

And here we are again...

I'm a little slow on the uptake regarding the Wii.  I didn't know it was only 480p.  I was actually planning on trading in my psp + games to preorder and hopefully payoff most of the balance.

No no... it wasn't anything like that. It's just there was a pretty heated thread re: not wanting a wii cause it wasn't in HD...

I'm hoping to get some major time with Okami tonight after our Pampered Chef party guests depart.  Haven't touched it since release day due to time constraints.

That and Advance Wars DS has me all wrapped up in it's War Room mode. I'm 3/4 of the way through the campaign, but I can't get enough of the 1 off battles. What a great game.

Anyone corroborate this?
13958  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Price Calculator on: September 21, 2006, 10:16:58 PM
$449.30

1 complete controller, 2 games and 2000.00 wii points + tax.

I hope to have about 200.00 in BB gift certs, so that'll bring it back down to retail price for the system.

Modify. Might pick up a 3rd game, but Wii'll see.
