13881  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Game collecting, rare games and their value etc. on: October 18, 2006, 12:45:44 PM
I used to buy only new games as I wanted the whole 'experience.' I then used to keep all of my games- not necessarily for collecting reason, but just cause.  However, as a result of the trade lists on GG then CG, I really found hanging on to games that I'd never play again just was a waste of space and trade value.

I now only keep the games that have me at hello and that I know I will someday go back to.

anything dealing with messing with eyes makes me squirm.

I watched a video of my Mother getting her procedure done and almost threw up.

GOOD LUCK!

Ditto. I'm very squeamish about eyes.  I wouldn't watch the vid of my moms and I requested that they not tell me anything specific about the procedure.

I'm going to buy one for my son for Christmas...he's a bit young for it, but I can't wait for him to have it.

It was one of my favorite toys ever.  Anyone else?
13888  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 N00bz Journal- Updated 22/Oct/06 on: October 17, 2006, 12:48:50 PM
So the 360 arrived yesterday at the start of my work day.  Being the responsible employee (and father) I waited until the work day was done and the kids were in bed before I hooked it all up.

First off, removing the 360 premium box from the shipping box almost gave me a hernia.  I couldn't believe the heft.  Zounds.

I do like the packaging. I enjoyed that each component has a 'special' plastic bag labeled with what the item is for:  "Connect,""Power," Talk," etc.  Everything was neatly packed and in place and the smell of new electronics greeted my nostrils.  Ahhh.

I unpacked the items and set to reading the hook up instructs.  Seemed pretty clear so I set to my hookups.  The cabling is quality as far as I can tell and I was pleased that the network cable was a good length (thought thanks to Purge <my hero  bowdown>, I now have a network jack right behind the tv unit and didn't need too much length).  I plugged the component cables into the tv, then fed them down to my new 360.  I switched the selector to HDTV and hooked in my optical cable.  This leads to my first complaint.

The optical jack seems to be poorly 'machined' and the optical cable seems to pop out very easily.  I guess this won't be an issue with the unit in place but I wasn't used to things just popping out.  Is this how they all are?

Next up the power cord.  Good heavens is the power brick enormous and the connector that goes into the back of the console looks like it should be powering SHODAN.  Anyway, I set the power brick on the shelf below the console so that I don't have duelling heat sources.

Time to turn it on. Power button go.

RED RINGS OF DEATH.  Oh nos.  I've read the horror stories. Is mine dead out of the box? No. I just didn't push the AV connection in far enough to 'pop' into place.  Quick fix and away we go.

On comes the 360, not as loud as I thought it would be.  The boot up screen comes on. I don't find it as impressive as the Xbox's, but anyway.

After reconfiguring my hand to be used to the controller (I love the wireless!, but am so perfectly attuned to my Dual Shock 2 that it will take some getting used to), I set forth into the settings.

Cool. Controller is responsive and there's no cords to shift around my knees.  I tool around the dashboard and decide to light up my first game. Dead Rising.

Pop it in. NOW I UNDERSTAND WHAT THE NOISE COMMENTARY IS ABOUT.  When the disc is spinning it's pretty loud, but, I must say it's not orders of magnitude louder than the Xbox.

Opening of the game is fine, controls are reversed from what I like but that can be fixed.  I take a few snap shots, struggle through the tiny text (I'm on a 30 inch widescreen HD set...) investigate the rooftop a bit, hit the first save point, power down and fire up Killer 7 on my PS2.

So far so good, but I wasn't in the mood to work through the DR manual or deal with setting up the network connectivity.  I only had 15 minutes left before Antiques Roadshow and wanted to get some gaming in so returning to Killer 7 isn't an indictment of my lack of zeal, but rather how engrossing that game is and the time constraints I was under.

So far my impressions overall are good. The dashboard seems very intuitive and user friendly. The console isn't super loud by my estimation. I love the controller and the ability to power off using it.  I'm wary of it breaking given all the horror stories, but I guess I'm vested now and am going to have to roll with it.

I'm pondering the warranty, but am leary given the recent shipping cost thread.

More later and I hope to see folks online later today...though I'll probably stay at the Silver level for the forseeable future.

That's pretty cool.

I'm not sure I understood the rock under the block thing.

If teh block weighs 1600 lbs, how does he lift it on top of the stone?  Even with those handles, he's still got to muscle at least a significant portion of that weight vertically.

Also, can someone explain how he used that technique with that barn?
13892  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need to Research Digital Video Cameras: Advice Sought on: October 17, 2006, 12:14:03 PM
I'm hoping this will be the last dime I spend on anything technological for a long time...The family is in 'need' of a digital video camera and as I'm not a technofile, I know nothing about anything until the time comes to need to know.

So I'm calling on the GT techno-studs for another assist. Good non-Sony brands? Good sites for researching different features (besides CNet)...etc.

I'm hoping there's a good mid level digital camcorder in the $500-600 range

Thanks.

Me too, but if its a Wario-ware type game I think I will just pass on it.

It's an RPG from the makers of Killer 7.

Drawin' a blank on that one too.

What Kevin said.  I'm playing through Killer 7 right now and it is absolutely a love hate relationship.

While it is a brilliant game, I'm not sure why it's a brilliant game yet.  I love it, but I don't know why.  The story is intriguing but I don't know why.  The style just clicks pefectly with me but...I don't know why.

Watch Kasvan's video review of it on Gamespot.  It sold me on it. It might sell you on staying far away from it.

It's just one of those games.

It's pretty cheap at Costco, and you can return your eyes if they mess it up!!   thumbsup

Winnar!

I had mine done in February.  That thread is the saga leading up to and after.

I was on the high end of -9 and am now seeing 20/20 in my left and 20/25 in my right.

Side effects: halos at night (not terrible) and when the seasons change I need lubricating drops.

Cost: 2650 per eye for me.

WOuld have been worth it at double the cost. I now have movie star good looks. thumbsup

13908  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ideal Game Length For You? on: October 16, 2006, 10:10:37 AM
Might should be in general gaming, but...

What's your ideal game length?

Based on a comment by Kevin Grey in some thread somewhere and listening to an old 1up Yours podcast, the topic has been on my brain.

There are many variables to consider 10 hrs of genius is better than 30 hrs of crap. Additionally there's cost to time played ratio, but if you parse it down to what your schedule is, your RL commitments, etc,  overall what's your ideal length for a game.

I'll stick to what I replied to KG and go with 11-20 leaning toward the upper end of that range as a game of that length, unless I stay up late and neglect sleep, will last me weeks and weeks.  20 to 30 hr games also fit within the sweet spot.

Update:

Well, instead of waiting around on Amazon, I jumped on the 360+3 games for 459.00 shipped from outpost.

I'm planning on selling Saint's Row and Test Drive Unlimited on Ebay and making Dead Rising my first 'next gen' experience.

Hopefully, I'll find time to have it done by GoW's release date.

For me, it was a pretty good gaming weekend. I got about 3 hours of Killer 7 in.  I also watched the first cutscene that really truly bothered me.

This game is whacked, but unique and that's why I'll keep going.
