Quote from: Purge on September 12, 2006, 02:51:44 AM

saywhat 1st gen Ps2 games were not even CLOSE to the quality that the 360 games are.

Irrelevant.  The point of the thread is that the PS2 Generation is 'dead' because of the shiny new graphics charged 360.  I countered saying that the releases for the PS2 in the next six months are at least is strong if not stronger than that of the 360.

Quote
The cross-platform games delivered to the PS2 are generally cut down. For instance, some of the Tom Clancy titles (R6 IIRC) couldn't have working doors with the size of it.

Again, irrelevent. Sure the technical capability of the PS2 and even the XBOX is well behind the 360, but I see lots of classic cars still on the road and they're no less marvelous because of the technology incorporated into modern ones.  And they're not 'OMG DEAD. KILLT!'

Quote
So in terms of quality, the PS2 is lagging behind the xbox1, which is behind the 360.

Quality of processor? Quality of workmanship? Quality of Games? No, just technologically.  I've not read nor heard about any game on the 360 comparing to any of the blockbuster classics on the PS2.  Not even a whisper. Sure 360 is in it's first year so there's no chance of that happening though progress will hopefully be made with some of the larger releases due within the next six months.  This fact should also preclude hyperbolic statements like the previous gen being dead from being made also.

Quote
There is a fluidity in the 360 implementation. The Live integration, achievement points and the marketplace all have wormed their way into the hearts of gamers. Having demos available for free (silver requires no cost) means that ANY 360 owner can reap the benefits of online gameplay.

And that's fine.  I definitely applaud MS' implementation of the online features for the 360. No doubt it's brilliant (with some flaws to still be worked out). However, there are still far more SP gamers than MP gamers (and don't ask me for a source cause I don't have one- I think it's indisputable though).  I would bet this is even true of those with a 360.

This is also good news.  Everyone is kicking butt. woohoo!

Good weekend, Arkon!

Thanks, although it was a bit of a shock to me.  My legs were pretty sore and so I took off from walking, although I ate a bit better than usual.  I will be happy when I hit 249 as I haven't been under 250 in about 4 years.

Definitely take the time to heal and recover. Don't over do it especially since you're kicking so much butt right now.

Funny, but I haven't really tracked release dates since my pc days. Unless a game that I'm dying to get is coming out I don't really pay attention. As that doesn't usually happen much anymore due to my Cheap Ass tendencies, I don't track release dates much at all. Last one I cared about was the DSL.

I'm sure I'm in the minority though.

I'm taking a hard look at HM DS but the recent previews have me taking a step back. The previews are bashing poor stylus control as their main complaint. Any news on this?

his PS2 just for that game.

Foolish mistake in my opinion. There are some blockbuster releases due out before the end of this year for the PS2.  The games for the 360 cannot be better from a perspective of story, pacing, gameplay and writing than these PS2 releases...so the people you're talking about must all be about the graphics.

Wombat on CAG has a great point in one of the Cagcasts. The games coming out for 360 wouldn't be getting hardly any of the pub or buzz if they were coming out for any other system. However, because 360 is the new kid there's a disproportionate raving about anything that's even half-way good on that system.

Well, if there's an HDMI input doesn't that mean that it should?

Also, your receiver only has two optical inputs, but does it have any digital coax inputs (usually color coded orange)?  If so, and your DVD player has the digital coax output, use that in place of the optical port, freeing up that second optical port for a console.  There isn't any difference in quality between optical and digital coax, so nothing lost.

I'ma have to check that out.  Have I told you that you're my favorite GTer?  icon_smile

Actually, now I'm trying to push the sound through the HDMI cable to the tv and from the tv to the tuner via optical...nothing's easy.

Is there a reason why you can not just have the optical go straight from the DVD player to the tuner?

Well, there's only 2 optical inputs on my tuner. So if I could route all sound (dvd and tv) through one opt from the cable to the tv, I'll be better off as right now I only get digital sound from the dvd player and whichever console is plugged in.

What Ralph said.  It seems like your TV can't decode the sound portion of an HDMi signal.

Make sure that the DVD player is set to output via optical and not from HDMI in the DVD player settings menu.  Hard to be more specific without seeing the DVD player manual.

Rented Inside Man with Denzel, Jodie and Clive last night (excellent btw) and one of the hostages has a PSP.

They show a game being played which looks like it would be GTA or something (never played it) where the kid shoots a guy in a drive by.  He hits him, the guy's wounded and this is what happens next:

The words "Kill the nigga." pop up on the screen.

The guy gets out of the car. Caps him a few times.

Then he pulls a grenade out and puts it into the dead guy's mouth.

He walks away and the head explodes all over the brick wall.

I LOL'd cause it was so ridiculous and assured my wife that anything with 'Kill the nigga.' would never make it through to production.

But then I thought: I've never played GTA or any of its many clones and this could have been real. Also, would Sony let a fake game be displayed on their hardware?  Hence, I'm here. Is that a real game?

I've never bought a screen protector, have used the DS extensively, and the screen looks brand new. Nintendo has a history of making extremely durable products and with the DS lite it's no exception. Of course I can't fault anyone for being protective, but you should know that it''s not a necessity.

This was the argument (not that you're arguing) against screen protectors at CAG too.  IMHO, I think it's well worth the 9 bones shipped to make sure that no scratches get on the screens.  It has actually brought me quite a bit of piece of mind.

I would recommend the hori's without hesitation- just take your time putting them on. I had to order two sets cause I'm an idiot and botched the first application.

This actually raises another question:

Right now I have audio going optical out of the DVD player into my tuner to ensure that I get DTS or 5.1 as appropriate.

With an HDMI hookup, does the HDMI cable also push the audio or just the picture?  If it includes the audio, should I just let the connection from the TV to the receiver be optical...will this still produce DTS/5.1?

Cross post with BC, but I know that the audience here at GT is very up to date on tech so here it is:

I've purchased an HDMI capable upscan dvd player.

I'm not using HDMI at present as I don't have a cable.

I have plugged it in precisely the same way my previous DVD player was plugged in.

Problem: There's a washed out gray color on the entire screen. Black is gray. White is grayish/white etc. I've adjusted some of the settings (contrast, brightness, etc) to no avail.

It was suggested that the picture quality might suffer because it's not going through HDMI and I thought of that as well...but that doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I'm not worried about the upscan, just the washed out picture...

Any suggestions?
